AnimalsAnimal Tracks (180 gram pressing) ... LP
MGM/Abkco, 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
Seminal work from The Animals – an album whose US pressing carried the cover note "their 3rd and biggest set yet" – and which definitely follows up that promise with a sound that's even more powerful and on the money than before! Part of the record's charm comes from the organ work of Alan Price – really taking off here, with this moody power that's perfect for the vocals of Eric Burdon – heard to famous effect on the album's killer hits "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" – both tracks that really move past the straighter blues of the group's roots, and have them stepping out with a proud sound for a new generation! The whole record's great, though – and other titles include "The Story Of Bo Diddley", "Bury My Body", "Club A Go Go", "I Can't Believe It", "For Miss Caulker", "Roberta", and "Bring It On Home To Me". AnimalsAnimalization (180 gram pressing) ... LP
MGM/Abkco, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
A record that has The Animals at the crossroads – working without the piano and organ of Alan Price, but with an even more rising sense of power from Eric Burdon – who's really coming into his own as a singer, and turning out to be a surprisingly great songwriter too! The group still bring in tunes that are from some of their blues and R&B inspirations – but Burdon's phrasing is very personal, and really transforms the material and makes it work wonderfully with the original tunes – on titles that include "Cheating", "She'll Return It", "See See Rider", "Inside Looking Out", "Gin House Blues", "What Am I Living For", "I Put A Spell On You", "Don't Bring Me Down", and "One Monkey Won't Stop The Show". MGM/Abkco, 1964. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.99
The seminal first album from The Animals – a set that came out at a time when the whole UK scene was smitten with blues and soul influences from the US – yet a record that still managed to really stand out from the pack! Part of that's because of the fantastic lead vocals from Eric Burdon – still just a kid at the time of recording, but able to work with this searing intensity that seems to put most of his contemporaries to shame – belting out lyrics with a quality that really transforms the tunes, and has them finding a way into the rock canon without sounding like shameless ripoffs at all. Titles include their classic "House Of The Rising Sun" – plus "I'm Mad Again", "Baby Let Me Take You Home", "Right Time", "Gonna Send You Back To Walker", "The Girl Can't Help It", "Blue Feeling", and "Talkin Bout You". MGM/Abkco, 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
Not a live recording from the mighty Animals, but a set that was issued during a year when the group were taking the American stages by storm – put together from extra material that was only issued on their UK debut album, plus UK Animal Tracks material, and a few singles too! The set's hardly a hodge podge, though – as it was a crucial second full length for the US, and a collection of cuts that really cemented the group's reputation at the time – thanks to the strength of cuts that include "Mess Around", "I Believe To My Soul", "Ain't Got You", "Dimples", "She Said Yeah", "I'm Crying", "Boom Boom", "How You've Changed", and "Let The Good Times Roll". Sam CookeAin't That Good News (180 gram pressing) ... LP
RCA/Abkco, 1964. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
Good news galore from the great Sam Cooke – maybe THE album in which he fully shows off his unique contribution to soul music in the 60s – that mix of raw and sweet, easygoing and progressive – a mode that had a huge impact at the time, and went onto become a strong influence for years to come! Key proof of this approach is the landmark track "A Change is Gonna Come" – a slyly righteous track that became a huge Civil Rights anthem and has continued to have social power for many years. And even the more mundane titles have a fresh approach too – like the hit "Another Saturday Night", and a host of other gems that include "Home", "No Second Time", "The Riddle Song", "Good Times", "Meet Me At Mary's Place", and "Rome Wasn't Built In A Day". Sam CookeSam Cooke At The Copa ... CD
Abkco, 1964. Used ... $4.99
A classic live album – one of the first in soul music, and a beautiful set of smooth soul tunes from Sam Cooke! Sam's singing at the high-end nitespot The Copacabana – and like many live sets performed there, this one's tailored a bit to the classy crowd at the show – but that doesn't stop him from using his voice to perfection, sweetly crafting beautiful lines on a batch of standards given the soul treatment, plus a few of Sam's own hits. And sure, it's easy to criticize this album after the release of the Live At The Harlem Square album in the mid 80s – which was recorded a year earlier, but rejected by RCA in favor of this album's crossover potential – but keep in mind that for most folks who didn't grow up with the hindsight of reissues, this album was all they had, and it still had quite an impact in the soul market. Titles include "The Best Things In Life Are Free", "Try A Little Tenderness", "If I Had A Hammer", "Twistin The Night Away", "You Send Me", and "This Little Light Of Mine". CD

Question Mark & The MysteriansAction ... LP
Cameo/Abkco, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 25.99
The second album from Question Mark & The Mysterians – even more obscure than the first, and harder and heavier too! There's an energy and brashness here that's undeniable – like the group have really gotten their isht together – and found a way to push past the simple melodic groove of their debut! All the best elements from that set are still in place – the cool organ, Question Mark's almost-conversational vocals – and the garagey production that makes the guitars sound great. But there's also a focus that comes through strongly – like the combo were really finding the right way to interact – no doubt after a string of club performances on the strength of their singles! Titles include a long take on "Shout", plus "Do You Feel It", "Smokes", "Hangin On A String", "Got To", "I'll Be Back", and "Girl". LP, Vinyl record album

Rolling Stones & OthersRolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus ... CD
Abkco, 1968. Used ... $4.99
A great audio documentary of a really mindblowing film – one that captures the Rolling Stones at that key late 60s point when they were stepping into really sinister territory – playing in a very vivid setting, along with some of their key up-and-coming contemporaries on the scene! The whole thing builds up with the energy of a circus – the Stones are last, and there's a growing mix of performers introduced by various members of the band – really presented in a carnivalesque array, before the lead act comes in and knocks it out of the park. The set features a killer early version of "A Quick One While He's Away" by The Who – maybe one of the high points of the set – plus "Song For Jeffrey" by Jethro Tull, Whole Lotta Yoko" by Yoko Ono & The Dirty Mac (John Lennon), "Ain't That A Lot Of Love" by Taj Mahal, and "Something Better" by Marianne Faithfull. The Rolling Stones round things out with performances of "Sympathy For The Devil", "Parachute Woman", "Jumpin Jack Flash", "Salt Of The Earth", "No Expectations", and "You Can't Always Get What You Want". ✨✧ Alexandre Desplat & OthersFrench Dispatch ... LP
Abkco, 2021. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A completely charming soundtrack for an equally charming film – a set that mixes together the instrumental music created by Alexandre Desplat for the Wes Anderson film The French Dispatch, and a number of the full songs that were used as snippets during the movie! Desplat's compositions are great – able to shift in mode and tone for the different stories featured in the narrative, but all cohesive enough to support the whimsy and wit of Anderson's direction. And these cuts are balanced out by a number of French songs and other soundtrack themes from earlier generations – woven together in the best Wes Anderson way. These cuts include "Tu M'As Trop Menti" by Chantal Goya, "Inseguimento Al Taxi" by Mario Nascimbene, "I've Seen That Face Before Me" by Grace Jones, "Fiasco" by Gus Viseur, "J'En Deduis Que Je T'Aime" by Charles Aznavour, "L'Ultima Volta" by Ennio Morricone, "Adagio" by Georges Delerue, "Aline" by Jarvis Cocker, and "Fugue No 2" by The Swingle Singers. Tunefully, the record is one of his best in years – with some wonderful mellow soul groovers that never fail to delight – all produced with a warm California sound, and featuring some great backing vocals by The Waters and a host of other Womacks. Jarvis often whispers as much as he sings – taking a page from the book of Serge Gainsbourg – but the album's also not just a slavish rehash of French modes from the past, as some of the arrangements are a bit more contemporary – and offer up a a nice way to transform songs originally associated with Serge Gainsbourg, Dalida, Francoise Hardy, and other French singers from years past.
