Sam CookeAin't That Good News (180 gram pressing) ... LP
RCA/Abkco, 1964. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 23.99
Good news galore from the great Sam Cooke – maybe THE album in which he fully shows off his unique contribution to soul music in the 60s – that mix of raw and sweet, easygoing and progressive – a mode that had a huge impact at the time, and went onto become a strong influence for years to come! Key proof of this approach is the landmark track "A Change is Gonna Come" – a slyly righteous track that became a huge Civil Rights anthem and has continued to have social power for many years. And even the more mundane titles have a fresh approach too – like the hit "Another Saturday Night", and a host of other gems that include "Home", "No Second Time", "The Riddle Song", "Good Times", "Meet Me At Mary's Place", and "Rome Wasn't Built In A Day". Sam CookeKeep Movin' On (180 gram pressing) ... LP
RCA/Abkco, Early 60s. New Copy 2LP ... $36.99 38.99
A brilliant overview of Sam Cooke's best secular soul from the 60s – a well-done collection that contains tracks from Sam's early sessions for RCA, and which presents the material with a full set of notes by Peter Guaralnick, and complete details on all the sessions! Some of the tunes on here were hits, but there's a lot more here that are less familiar, including a few unreleased numbers – such that hearing the CD together is like finding that great, lost, no-nonsense Sam Cooke album that never really came out at the time! Titles include "Shake", "Yeah Man", "Good Times", "Falling In Love", "Meet Me At Mary's Place", "Rome (Wasn't Built In A Day)", "The Riddle Song", "A Change Is Gonna Come", "I'm Just A Country Boy", "Keep Movin On", and "There'll Be No Second Time". 23 tracks in all. LP, Vinyl record album

Sam CookeNight Beat ... CD
RCA/Abkco, 1963. Used ... $2.99
Wonderful mellow work from Sam Cooke – and a set that's recorded with a sound that's very much in keeping with the "night beat" that you might expect from the title! In fact, there's not so much a "beat" as a simple easy groove – a gentle sort of "night" feeling, with some piano in the lead on many tracks, and backing by a larger group conducted by Rene Hall – a great setting that lets Cooke hit some of his most soulful moments on record from the time! The album includes many lesser-known Cooke performances – including "Trouble Blues", "You Gotta Move", "Fool's Paradise", "Lost & Lookin", and "Mean Old World". CD
(1995 jewel case pressing.)

✨✧ Sam CookeSam Cooke At The Copa ... CD
Abkco, 1964. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A classic live album – one of the first in soul music, and a beautiful set of smooth soul tunes from Sam Cooke! Sam's singing at the high-end nitespot The Copacabana – and like many live sets performed there, this one's tailored a bit to the classy crowd at the show – but that doesn't stop him from using his voice to perfection, sweetly crafting beautiful lines on a batch of standards given the soul treatment, plus a few of Sam's own hits. And sure, it's easy to criticize this album after the release of the Live At The Harlem Square album in the mid 80s – which was recorded a year earlier, but rejected by RCA in favor of this album's crossover potential – but keep in mind that for most folks who didn't grow up with the hindsight of reissues, this album was all they had, and it still had quite an impact in the soul market. Titles include "The Best Things In Life Are Free", "Try A Little Tenderness", "If I Had A Hammer", "Twistin The Night Away", "You Send Me", and "This Little Light Of Mine". CD

Abkco, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99
A 70s album from The Stones, but one with a 60s-looking cover – and for good reason too, as the set features a whole host of unissued gems from their first decade in the studio! The package is a great reminder of how strong the group were at the start – so much so that the set ended up standing quite strongly next to other 70s giants from Mick and Keith. This package features the UK version of the record, which had even more tracks – and titles include "We're Wasting Time", "Sleepy City", "Out Of Time", "Don't Lie To Me", "I Don't Know Why", "Jiving Sister Fanny", "Downtown Suzie", "Family", "Memo From Turner", "I'm Going Down", "I'd Much Rather Be With The Boys", "Each & Every Day Of The Year", and "Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind". An unusual blend of classic country and original music – served up here in support of the Netflix film of the same name! We really dig the classic cuts – work that includes "Young Love" by Sonny James, "Hillbilly Boogie" by The Delmore Brothers, "The Three Bells" by The Browns, "Honeycomb" by Jimmie Rogers, "Wings Of A Dove" by Ferlin Husky, "Wishful Thinking" by Wynn Stewart, "He Says The Same Things To Me" by Skeeter Davis, and "Funny How Time Slips Away" by Billy Walker – plus a live version of "Little Bessie" by The Stanley Brothers. But the quality of the older music is matched in the new cuts "Washed In The Blood" and "Banks Of The Ohio" by Pokey LaFarge, then balanced by mellower soundtrack instrumentals from Saunder Jurrians and Danny Bensi. VariousYou Can't Sit Down – Cameo/Parkway Dance Crazes 1958 to 1964 ... CD
Cameo/Abkco, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
A great set of groovers from the Cameo/Parkway label – a company that gave the world the biggest twist record of the 60s, but which also was perfectly poised to deliver all sorts of other upbeat tracks as well! The label was in Philly – a huge dance town in the early days of soul and rock – and the set list here is filled with the kind of cuts that were Philadelphia's answer to the rising sound of Motown – the roots of the Northern Soul sound that would be followed by soul collectors for decades! These aren't novelty hits, but upbeat cuts that groove plenty – most by soul artists, a few by pop singers – but all given the kind of tight instrumentation and strong studio handling that made the Philly scene such a standout. 22 tracks in all – including "Shimmy Shimmy" and "The Wah Watusi" by The Orlons, "Bristol Stomp" and "You Can't Sit Down" by the Dovells, "Mashed Potato Time" and "Do The Bird" by Dee Dee Sharp, "The 81" by Candy & The Kisses, "The Mash" by Tony Young & The Hippies, "Mexican Hat Rock" by The Applejacks, "Baby Do The Frog" by The Dardenelles, "The Swim (part 1)" by The Marlins, "Slow Twistin" by Chubby Checker & Dee Dee Sharp, "The Third House" by Bobby Rydell, "When You Dance" by The Turbans, "Everybody South Street" by The Taffys, "The Popeye Waddle" by Don Covay, and yes, "The Twist" by Chubby Checker. VariousYou Got The Power – Cameo/Parkway Northern Soul 1964 to 1967 ... CD
Cameo/Abkco, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
Rare soul gems from a legendary Philly family of labels – the Cameo/Parkway imprints, and the related Fairmount as well! Cameo and Parkway were home to plenty of pop hits at the start of the 60s – but they always put their money back into the scene, and were close to the ground digging up the best and brightest new Philly acts – something that maybe made them one of the first and most important to unleash the strong legacy of Philadelphia soul! Given the hits on Cameo, the company always had a great hear for upbeat groovers – which also makes for plenty of Northern Soul magic here – a legacy almost to rival early Motown, collected here in a long-overdue official look at this side of the label. Titles include "Because Of My Heart" by Frankie Beverly & The Butlers, "I Love Him So" by Nikki Blu, "Village Of Tears" by Ben Zane, "Night Owl" by Bobby Paris, "Country Girl" by Vickie Baines, "Envy In My Eyes" by The Orlons, "You Got The Power" by The Four Exceptions, "You Didn't Say A Word" by Yovnne Baker, "Who Do You Think You Are" by Soul City, "The Grass" by Lonnie Youngblood, "Shake & Shingaling (part 1)" by Gene Waiters, "SOS" by Christine Cooper, "Pass Me By" by Hattie Winston, "Picture Me Gone" by Evie Sands, and "Eddie's My Name" by Eddie Holman. ✨✧ Bobby WomackPoet/Poet II ... CD
Beverly Glen/Abkco, 1982/1984. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Bobby's 2 groovy and highly successful Poet albums from the 80s – back to back on CD! The original Poet album showed the world that he was still very much on top of his game at the time. The sound here is great – still with that older Womack rasp and warmth, but also done in a slightly smoother mode that grooves things up with some modern soul touches, yet never loses Bobby's charm! Tunefully, the record is one of his best in years – with some wonderful mellow soul groovers that never fail to delight – all produced with a warm California sound, and featuring some great backing vocals by The Waters and a host of other Womacks. Titles include "So Many Sides Of You", "Lay Your Lovin On Me", "Secrets", "Just My Imagination", "Games", "If You Think You're Lonely Now", and "Where Do We Go From Here". Poet II is another smooth soulful set that features some nice guest work from the likes of George Benson, Patti Labelle, and Wilton Felder. Bobby's voice is always a treasure, with a soulful edge that never goes away, no matter how smooth the production! Titles include "Tryin To Get Over You", "Through The Eyes Of A Child", "Love Has Finally Come At Last", "Who's Foolin Who", and "I Wish I Had Someone To Go Home To". CD

Decca/Abkco, Late 60s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A wealth of wonderful work from Marianne Faithfull, all pulled from those key early years when she was part of the musical world of Andrew Loog Oldham and the Rolling Stones! Yet right from the start, despite the fact that she sang a few Stones songs on her own (and wrote a few for the group, too) – Marianne was always very much her own singer, and had a way with a song that was quite different than most of the other UK girl pop artists of the time too! Faithfull sometimes has a trill, and always has a sense of darkness on these singles – almost in the territory of the young Nico, but more tuneful and less moody – and superbly set up in just the right sort of arrangements by Mike Leander, David Whitaker, and even the great Jack Nitzsche. 2LP set features all the a and b-sides of these early singles – 22 tracks that include "Morning Sun", "Sister Morphine", "As Tears Go By", "Summer Nights", "The Sha La La Song", "Something Better", "I'd Like To Dial Your Number", "Counting", "That's Right Baby", "Tomorrow's Calling", "This Little Bird", "What Have I Done Wrong", and "Go Away From My World".
