✨✧ Sam CookeAin't That Good News (180 gram pressing) ... LP
RCA/Abkco, 1964. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Good news galore from the great Sam Cooke – maybe THE album in which he fully shows off his unique contribution to soul music in the 60s – that mix of raw and sweet, easygoing and progressive – a mode that had a huge impact at the time, and went onto become a strong influence for years to come! Key proof of this approach is the landmark track "A Change is Gonna Come" – a slyly righteous track that became a huge Civil Rights anthem and has continued to have social power for many years. And even the more mundane titles have a fresh approach too – like the hit "Another Saturday Night", and a host of other gems that include "Home", "No Second Time", "The Riddle Song", "Good Times", "Meet Me At Mary's Place", and "Rome Wasn't Built In A Day". ✨✧ Rolling Stones12 x 5 (Japanese SACD pressing) ... CD
Abkco/Universal (Japan), Mid 60s. Used ... $29.99
Essentially early Stones! 12 X 5 is The Rolling Stones at a very early, hard grooving peak, way back in '64. It's ground breaking stuff, in they they truly pave the way for so much of the soul, blues and R&B loving Anglos to come out of the Brit and US scenes in the months and years to come. It's a covers-heavy set, given that they were just beginning to do doing original material at this early point – and the tracks include the Jagger/Richards penned "Good Times, Bad Times", "Congradulations" and "Grown Up Wrong" – plus "Time Is On My Side", "Around And Around", "2120 South Michigan Avenue", "Susie Q" and more. CD
(Out of print, 2002 hybrid SACD pressing with Japanese insert and oversized obi.)

Rolling StonesMetamorphosis (UK version – green vinyl pressing) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Abkco, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99
A 70s album from The Stones, but one with a 60s-looking cover – and for good reason too, as the set features a whole host of unissued gems from their first decade in the studio! The package is a great reminder of how strong the group were at the start – so much so that the set ended up standing quite strongly next to other 70s giants from Mick and Keith. This package features the UK version of the record, which had even more tracks – and titles include "We're Wasting Time", "Sleepy City", "Out Of Time", "Don't Lie To Me", "I Don't Know Why", "Jiving Sister Fanny", "Downtown Suzie", "Family", "Memo From Turner", "I'm Going Down", "I'd Much Rather Be With The Boys", "Each & Every Day Of The Year", and "Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind". Rolling Stones & OthersRolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus ... CD
Abkco, 1968. Used ... $7.99
A great audio documentary of a really mindblowing film – one that captures the Rolling Stones at that key late 60s point when they were stepping into really sinister territory – playing in a very vivid setting, along with some of their key up-and-coming contemporaries on the scene! The whole thing builds up with the energy of a circus – the Stones are last, and there's a growing mix of performers introduced by various members of the band – really presented in a carnivalesque array, before the lead act comes in and knocks it out of the park. The set features a killer early version of "A Quick One While He's Away" by The Who – maybe one of the high points of the set – plus "Song For Jeffrey" by Jethro Tull, Whole Lotta Yoko" by Yoko Ono & The Dirty Mac (John Lennon), "Ain't That A Lot Of Love" by Taj Mahal, and "Something Better" by Marianne Faithfull. The Rolling Stones round things out with performances of "Sympathy For The Devil", "Parachute Woman", "Jumpin Jack Flash", "Salt Of The Earth", "No Expectations", and "You Can't Always Get What You Want". CD

Bobby WomackPoet (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Abkco, 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
The first of Bobby's highly successful Poet albums from the early 80s – wonderfully done albums that showed the world that he was still very much on top of his game at the time! The sound here is great – still with that older Womack rasp and warmth, but also done in a slightly smoother mode that grooves things up with some modern soul touches, yet never loses Bobby's charm! Tunefully, the record is one of his best in years – with some wonderful mellow soul groovers that never fail to delight – all produced with a warm California sound, and featuring some great backing vocals by The Waters and a host of other Womacks. Titles include "So Many Sides Of You", "Lay Your Lovin On Me", "Secrets", "Just My Imagination", "Games", "If You Think You're Lonely Now", and "Where Do We Go From Here". LP, Vinyl record album

There's a new sort of sophistication to Bobby's music – never too smooth, especially on his vocals, which retain their original raspy charm – but a different vibe than the 70s, but one that's still very different than most mainstream soul of the time! VariousYou Can't Sit Down – Cameo/Parkway Dance Crazes 1958 to 1964 (180 gram yellow vinyl pressing) (2021 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Cameo/Abkco, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... On July 17, 2021
A great set of groovers from the Cameo/Parkway label – a company that gave the world the biggest twist record of the 60s, but which also was perfectly poised to deliver all sorts of other upbeat tracks as well! The label was in Philly – a huge dance town in the early days of soul and rock – and the set list here is filled with the kind of cuts that were Philadelphia's answer to the rising sound of Motown – the roots of the Northern Soul sound that would be followed by soul collectors for decades! These aren't novelty hits, but upbeat cuts that groove plenty – most by soul artists, a few by pop singers – but all given the kind of tight instrumentation and strong studio handling that made the Philly scene such a standout. 22 tracks in all – including "Shimmy Shimmy" and "The Wah Watusi" by The Orlons, "Bristol Stomp" and "You Can't Sit Down" by the Dovells, "Mashed Potato Time" and "Do The Bird" by Dee Dee Sharp, "The 81" by Candy & The Kisses, "The Mash" by Tony Young & The Hippies, "Mexican Hat Rock" by The Applejacks, "Baby Do The Frog" by The Dardenelles, "The Swim (part 1)" by The Marlins, "Slow Twistin" by Chubby Checker & Dee Dee Sharp, "The Third House" by Bobby Rydell, "When You Dance" by The Turbans, "Everybody South Street" by The Taffys, "The Popeye Waddle" by Don Covay, and yes, "The Twist" by Chubby Checker. Cameo/Abkco, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
Rare soul gems from a legendary Philly family of labels – the Cameo/Parkway imprints, and the related Fairmount as well! Cameo and Parkway were home to plenty of pop hits at the start of the 60s – but they always put their money back into the scene, and were close to the ground digging up the best and brightest new Philly acts – something that maybe made them one of the first and most important to unleash the strong legacy of Philadelphia soul! Given the hits on Cameo, the company always had a great hear for upbeat groovers – which also makes for plenty of Northern Soul magic here – a legacy almost to rival early Motown, collected here in a long-overdue official look at this side of the label. Titles include "Because Of My Heart" by Frankie Beverly & The Butlers, "I Love Him So" by Nikki Blu, "Village Of Tears" by Ben Zane, "Night Owl" by Bobby Paris, "Country Girl" by Vickie Baines, "Envy In My Eyes" by The Orlons, "You Got The Power" by The Four Exceptions, "You Didn't Say A Word" by Yovnne Baker, "Who Do You Think You Are" by Soul City, "The Grass" by Lonnie Youngblood, "Shake & Shingaling (part 1)" by Gene Waiters, "SOS" by Christine Cooper, "Pass Me By" by Hattie Winston, "Picture Me Gone" by Evie Sands, and "Eddie's My Name" by Eddie Holman. RCA/Abkco, 1964. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A classic live album – one of the first in soul music, and a beautiful set of smooth soul tunes from Sam Cooke! Sam's singing at the high-end nitespot The Copacabana – and like many live sets performed there, this one's tailored a bit to the classy crowd at the show – but that doesn't stop him from using his voice to perfection, sweetly crafting beautiful lines on a batch of standards given the soul treatment, plus a few of Sam's own hits. And sure, it's easy to criticize this album after the release of the Live At The Harlem Square album in the mid 80s – which was recorded a year earlier, but rejected by RCA in favor of this album's crossover potential – but keep in mind that for most folks who didn't grow up with the hindsight of reissues, this album was all they had, and it still had quite an impact in the soul market. Titles include "The Best Things In Life Are Free", "Try A Little Tenderness", "If I Had A Hammer", "Twistin The Night Away", "You Send Me", and "This Little Light Of Mine". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousYou Can't Sit Down – Cameo/Parkway Dance Crazes 1958 to 1964 ... CD
Cameo/Abkco, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
