AnimalsAnimals No 2 (10 inch LP) ... LP
EMI/Abkco, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A very cool early 10" album from The Animals – the group's second in this format, and never originally issued in the US! The group are at their young, gritty best here – with lots of bluesy currents in the music, thanks to Alan Price on Hammond – topped with soulful vocals from the mighty Eric Burdon, who never fails to blow us away. Titles include the great "I'm Mad Again", plus "Bury My Body", "She Said Yeah", and "I'm In Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Recent reissue, still in the shrink.)

✨✧ Sam CookeKeep Movin' On ... CD
Abkco/RCA, Early 60s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A brilliant overview of Sam's best secular soul from the 60s – a well-done collection that contains tracks from Sam's early sessions for RCA, and which presents the material with a full set of notes by Peter Guaralnick, and complete details on all the sessions! Some of the tunes on here were hits, but there's a lot more here that are less familiar, including a few unreleased numbers – such that hearing the CD together is like finding that great, lost, no-nonsense Sam Cooke album that never really came out at the time! Titles include "Shake", "Yeah Man", "Good Times", "Falling In Love", "Meet Me At Mary's Place", "Rome (Wasn't Built In A Day)", "The Riddle Song", "A Change Is Gonna Come", "I'm Just A Country Boy", "Keep Movin On", and "There'll Be No Second Time". 23 tracks in all. Marianne FaithfullCome & Stay With Me – The UK 45s 1964 to 1969 ... LP
Decca/Abkco, Late 60s. New Copy 2LP ... $36.99 38.99
A wealth of wonderful work from Marianne Faithfull, all pulled from those key early years when she was part of the musical world of Andrew Loog Oldham and the Rolling Stones! Yet right from the start, despite the fact that she sang a few Stones songs on her own (and wrote a few for the group, too) – Marianne was always very much her own singer, and had a way with a song that was quite different than most of the other UK girl pop artists of the time too! Faithfull sometimes has a trill, and always has a sense of darkness on these singles – almost in the territory of the young Nico, but more tuneful and less moody – and superbly set up in just the right sort of arrangements by Mike Leander, David Whitaker, and even the great Jack Nitzsche. 2LP set features all the a and b-sides of these early singles – 22 tracks that include "Morning Sun", "Sister Morphine", "As Tears Go By", "Summer Nights", "The Sha La La Song", "Something Better", "I'd Like To Dial Your Number", "Counting", "That's Right Baby", "Tomorrow's Calling", "This Little Bird", "What Have I Done Wrong", and "Go Away From My World". ✨✧ Rolling StonesLet It Bleed ... CD
Abkco, 1969. Used ... $5.99
Hard to go wrong with a Stones classic like this one – a record that really has the group hitting their late 60s stride, and coming across with a depth and power that really goes beyond their earlier releases! There's a sinister quality to the record right from the start – thanks to the brooding, haunting power of "Gimmie Shelter" – and the sublime "Monkey Man", which may well be one of our favorite Rolling Stones songs ever! But the whole thing's great – and other tracks include "Love In Vain", "Let It Bleed", "Live With Me", "Midnight Rambler", "Country Honk", and the classic "You Can't Always Get What You Want". CD

✨✧ Rolling StonesTheir Satanic Majesties Request ... CD
London/Abkco, 1967. Used ... $5.99
A record that was initially thought by some as a cheap cash-in on the Sgt Peppers concept – but an album that, to us, really helped set The Rolling Stones free to express themselves in so many new and amazing ways! There's definitely a bit of the hippie vibe to the set at times – such as sitar that might have been unimaginable on a Stones track a few years before – but there's also an explosively creative approach to the album's arrangements and production, creating a kaleidoscope of sounds that only further seems to illuminate the Jagger and Richards genius! Titles include the classic "She's A Rainbow" – plus "Citadel", "2000 Man", "On With The Show", "Sing All This Together", "In Another Land", "The Lantern", and "Gomper". CD

Rolling Stones & OthersRolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus (3LP 180 gram expanded edition) ... LP
Abkco, 1968. New Copy 3LP (reissue)... $58.99 64.98
A great audio documentary of a really mindblowing film – one that captures the Rolling Stones at that key late 60s point when they were stepping into really sinister territory – playing in a very vivid setting, along with some of their key up-and-coming contemporaries on the scene! The whole thing builds up with the energy of a circus – the Stones are last, and there's a growing mix of performers introduced by various members of the band – really presented in a carnivalesque array, before the lead act comes in and knocks it out of the park. The set features a killer early version of "A Quick One While He's Away" by The Who – maybe one of the high points of the set – plus "Song For Jeffrey" by Jethro Tull, "Whole Lotta Yoko" by Yoko Ono & The Dirty Mac (John Lennon), "Ain't That A Lot Of Love" by Taj Mahal, and "Something Better" by Marianne Faithfull. The Rolling Stones round things out with performances of "Sympathy For The Devil", "Parachute Woman", "Jumpin Jack Flash", "Salt Of The Earth", "No Expectations", and "You Can't Always Get What You Want". Plus, this double-length version has unreleased tracks "Warmup Jam" and "Revolution (rehearsal)" by The Dirty Mac, "Leaving Trunk" and "Corinna" by Taj Mahal, and the odd symphonic works "Ritual Fire Dance" and Mozart's "Sonata In C Major" by Julius Katchen. Bob Seger & The Last HeardHeavy Music – The Complete Cameo Recordings 1966/1967 ... LP
Cameo/Abkco, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $18.99 21.99
A fantastic early side of work from 70s superstar Bob Seger – and one that comes as quite a surprise, compared to his hits! This early material is really raw, gritty, and definitely shows Bob's roots in the same Detroit scene that was changing the worlds of both soul and rock in the late 60s – often with groups that had an equal emphasis on both sides of the spectrum! In fact, there's a surprisingly strong current of soul that runs through many of these cuts – a romping energy that really matches the freakier, fuzzier touches of the instrumentation – all with results that will have you maybe thinking about Bob in a whole new way. Some of the modes recall the best early Mitch Ryder material, but often with a trippier sort of vibe – and although the tracks came out as singles on the Cameo label in the mid 60s, this is the first full album ever issued of the material. Titles include "Sock It To Me Santa", "Heavy Music (parts 1 & 2)", "Chain Smokin", "Persecution Smith", "Vagrant Winter", "East Side Story", "Very Few", and "Florida Time". LP, Vinyl record album
