Nick GarrieNightmare Of JB Stanislas (with bonus tracks) ... LP
AZ/Tapete (Germany), 1969. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $34.99
Genius work by a singer-songwriter you've never heard of – a beautiful little album recorded in late 60s Paris, but done with English language lyrics! Nick Garrie's a hell of a great songwriter – one with the poetry of Leonard Cohen, the fragility of Tim Hardin, and the willingness to record with the larger arrangements that often brought out the best sounds from each of those singers! The set has Nick singing and playing guitar alongside full backings arranged by French producer Eddie Vartan – never too over the top, but spacious enough to set the album proudly next to the best early Columbia work by Cohen, or some of Hardin's sweetest sides for Verve. Titles include "Bungles Tours", "David's Prayer", "Ink Pot Eyes", "Little Bird", "Stephanie City", "Deeper Tones Of Blue", and "Can I Stay With You". Bonus tracks include "Queen Of Spades", "Close Your Eyes", and a number of rare demos too! LP, Vinyl record album

Fantastic! These are 2 of the best soundtracks of all time, and they've been smartly brought together on one CD for a nicely priced set of 20 tracks that will have you falling in love with the work of Francis Lai all over again. The sound quality is great, and the CD includes all of the classic theme from both scores, like "Man & A Woman", "Today It's You", "Samba Saravah", "Zoom", "Theme To Catherine", and more! Lots of cool organ, hauting trumpet, and very groovy French vocals by the likes of Nicole Croisille, Pierre Barouh, and Baden Powell! An essential release for any soundtrack or Now Sound fan, and a CD that we can't recommend highly enough! Plus, this cool French version has even better packaging than the American one! CD

Brigitte BardotLa Belle Et Le Blues ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
Brigitte Bardot's best known on these shores as an actress, but during the 60s she cut some really fantastic work on the scene in Paris – including a fair bit of groovers that were done with help from the legendary Serge Gainsbourg! Bardot provided a fantastic new voice in the world of pop music – a singer who was unabashedly open about her desires, and very different than the more melancholy stars of a few years before – a quality that's further emphasized by the wonderfully groovy instrumentation used on most of these tracks! Production and arrangements are superb – and put this music in the best territory of the grooviest 60s French pop by artists like Serge Gainsbourg, France Gall, Jacques Dutronc, and a rare few others. This is the first-ever English-annotated collection of work from the period – and features a whopping 25 tracks from her recordings for Philips and Disc AZ – titles that include "Harley Davidson", "Contact", "Neu Au Soleil", "Je Danse Donc Je Suis", "La Madrague", "Les Hommes Endormis", "Je Voudrais Perdre La Memoire", "Mr Sun", "Le Diable Est Anglais", "Tu Es Venu Mon Amour", "John Et Michel", "Gang Gang", and duets with Serge Gainsbourg on "Bonnie & Clyde" and "Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus". Ghostface Killah36 Seasons ... CD
Salvation, 2014. Used ... $4.99
A really stunning set from Ghostface Killah – a record that has the Wu-Tang legend teaming up with soul group The Revelations – who produce the set, participate, and bring in a really wonderful old school vibe! The album's still hip hop at the core – with guest appearances from Pharoahe Monch, Nems, Kool G Rap, AZ, and others – but The Revelations also sing a bit too, bringing in a killer harmony approach that's often echoes by the instrumentation, which includes guitar from Wes Mingus and keyboards from Angela Johnson, who also sings a bit of backup as well. The whole thing's a stunning meeting of minds – almost 70s New Jersey soul filtered through 90s New York hip hop – and even the booklet is a collective effort, with comics from David Lapham and others. Titles include "Here I Go Again", "Dogs Of War", "The Battlefield", "Call My Name", "Pieces To The Puzzle", and a sweet cover of "Thin Line Between Love & Hate". CD

ServicemenMeet The Servicemen – Classic Soul From Phoenix, Arizona (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Wind Hit, Mid 60s. New Copy Gatefold ... $7.99 16.98
Classic styled and classic worthy R&B vocal group soul from The Servicemen – a group based at Luke Air Force Base near Phoenix, AZ – a mix of uptempo productions and sweet acapellas cut in '66 & '67! A few numbers have lit up the UK Northern Soul scene in the past decade or so, but for the most part this material has languished undiscovered, and it's well worth checking out. The rhythms are tight and sharp, and there's some nice production touches on some of it, including some vibes and solid horn arrangements, but the focus is on the group vocals, left to lead the way on the acapella versions. A mix of uptempo numbers and ballads, with titles including the main and acapella versions of "Are You Angry", "I Need A Helping Hand" and "My Turn", "I'll Stop Loving You", "Close Your Eyes", "Right Around The Corner", the acapellas "Come Back To Me" and "Why Can't You Be True". Rough, raw and hardcore lyrical imagery, and top notch Ruff Ryder production from Swizz Beats and PK, plus Dame Grease on a number of cuts. Still impressive work from one of the most uncomprimising stars to breakout so big in the late 90s/early 00s. Includes "Ruff Ryder's Anthem", "Look Thru My Eyes", "Let Me Fly", "How's It Goin' Down", "Crime Story", "I Can Feel It", "Stop Being Greedy", "Ni**az Done Started Something", "For My Dogs" and more. 19 tracks including skits. Also, it has some nice guest appearances from Method Man, Raekwon, Nas, Big Noyd. Includes the hilarious "Drop A Gem On 'Em", "Hell On Earth", "Extortion", "More Trife Life", "Still Shinin'", "G.O.D. ✨✧ VariousShe Came From Hungary – 60s Beat Girls From The Eastern Bloc (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Qualiton/Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Great girl pop from a really unlikely source – not the better-known British and French female singles that rocked the European scene in the 60s – but a whole host of more obscure numbers from behind the Iron Curtain – all tracks recorded in Hungary, but hardly ever issued to the rest of the world at the time! Turns out, those Hungarians were very much in line with the kinds of sounds that were romping up London, Paris, and Rome at the time – beat-heavy, soul-influenced grooves that bring a new sort of brashness to the female singers in the lead – and give them a kind of universal appeal, even if you can't understand the lyrics at all! At some level, the instrumentation here is more than enough – loads of groovy organ lines, thumping bass, soaring horns, and all sorts of other groovy touches – but the unusual language of the vocals adds a very cool other aspect to the sound. All tracks are from the Qualiton catalog, and presented here with detailed notes and history in English – for titles tha tinclude "Ez Az Utolso Randevunk" by Eva Nagy, "Konyorogni Nem Fogok" by Zsuzsa Matray, "Keresek Egy Fiut" by Maria Wittek, "Mindig Tanul Az Ember" by Beata Karda, "Fekete Beat" by Sarolta Zalatnay, "Ha Csak Egy Fokkal Szebb Az Ordognel" by Gabi Fenyvesi, "Judas Vagy" by Kyri Ambrus, "Keresem A Szot" by Zsuzsa Koncz, and "Zsakutca" by Clementina Magay. Adventure Music, 2007. Used ... $8.99
Jazz versions of classics by Antonio Carlos Jobim – all done by a group arranged and directed by guitarist Mario Adnet, and featuring guest work from Joyce, Helio Delmiro, Romero Lumbambo, and others! The sound here is really fresh – not merely just a reworking of Jobim's original ideals, but a recasting of them in lightly arranged modes that often take on the shapes, colors, and textures of work by Moacir Santos – styles that are warm, but often have some sharper edges underneath, thanks to great interplay between the instruments. Bits of horns, guitar, piano, and percussion all come together with a tremendous sense of grace – and titles include "Tema Jazz", "Sue Ann", "Domingo Sincopado", "So Danco Samba", "Paulo Voo Livre", "Polo Pony", and "Bate Boca". Akerblom & ZengerAkerblom & Zenger – Live At Roma Jazz 2015 ... LP
Jazzaggression, 2015. New Copy ... $19.99
A beautifully spiritual set of duets between bassist Teemu Akerblom and saxophonist Mike Zenger – playing together here without any other instrumentation at all! Akerblom sets things up in a modal mode on most numbers – but mellower, without any piano or drums – and Zenger then blows these long, soulful solos on alto sax and flute – the former with a tone that's often quite deep, with a great deal of feeling. Things get slightly more outside and improvised as the set moves on – a shift that gives the whole thing a bit of a loft jazz vibe – and titles include "Peaceful Mornings", "So One Has To Go", "Abstract Blues & The Truth", "Frozen Land", and "Aurajoen Rannoilla". Shoji AketagawaYamazaki Blues ... CD
Aketa's Disk/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1983. New Copy ... $18.99
A slightly different album than usual from pianist Shoji Aketagawa, but one that still follows strongly in the best tradition of his offbeat gems for the Aketa's Disk label! This set has Shoji co-credited on piano and vocals – the latter of which aren't really sung lyrics, but maybe more sub-verbal expressions done alongside his bold work on the piano – almost an expansion of the kind of grunts you'd hear on older recordings by Erroll Garner, but taken into an even more pronounced position – so that they're often strong enough to become part of the melodic makeup of the tune! The group also features bass from Koichi Yamazaki, and drums from Takashi Miyasaka and Kenichi Kameyama – on titles that include "African Dream", "Footprints", "Yamazaki Blues", "Kameyama Blues", and "Dear Old Stockholm". Manny AlbamJazz Greats Of Our Time Vol 1 ... LP
Coral, 1957. Very Good- ... $1.99
A great large group project from arranger Manny Albam – one that teams him up with "jazz greats" of the east coast scene, in a really hard-swinging set of tracks that showcase some wonderful solo work! Manny's working here with a set of players who are well-chosen for their ability to work strongly in an ensemble, yet also break out with strong solo work when the moment comes – and the lineup includes Gerry Mulligan, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Phil Woods, Bob Brookmeyer, and Art Farmer – with rhythm by the trio of Hank Jones, Milt Hinton, and Osie Johnson. The tracks are long, with more room for soloing than usual on this sort of album – and nearly all of them are originals by Manny. Titles include "Minor Matters", "Blues From Neither Coast", and "Latined Fracture". LP, Vinyl record album

Luglio/Wah Wah (Spain), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A really experimental set from the Italian scene of the 70s – an album that might easily fit in the great legacy of albums on the Cramps label, even though it was issued by the artist himself! The approach is very unique – as the record mostly features organ and keyboard lines from Giacomo Mino Di Martino – a musician with roots in prog, but who'd also discovered much more avant, creative territory over the years – partly in collaboration with his wife, actress Terra Di Benedetto, who provides some unusual vocalizations on the set! The whole thing is very different than anything we can think of – at times, almost like some of the better melodic moments of the UK industrial underground of the mid 80s, but also with some of the starker qualities that mark the Italian avant scene of the time the album was issued. Redwood/Celeste (Japan), 1981. Used ... $11.99
The second album by this excellent all-female San Francisco jazz combo – a live date that's even more cooking than their debut! As before, there's a sweetly breezy style to the record – that hip SF sound of the 70s – with echoes of Braziliana and soul amidst the group's jazzier leanings – all wrapped together with a sound that's tight, but never uptight! The female vocals give the music a feel that's like Janet Lawson, Sheila Landis, or some of the hipper European singers of the 70s – and instrumentation is mostly acoustic, save for a bit of Fender Rhodes. Titles include a version of Gil Scott-Heron's "Willing", plus "Greeting Song", "Call It Jazz", "Too Bad", "Golden River/Golden Dream", and "Heaven Is In Your Mind". CD

Beautiful work from pianist Geri Allen – a set that features the musician both with her trio, and with a larger nonet that was put together as part of her winning the 1996 Jazzpar prize – as well as a set that features some great late work from trumpeter Johnny Coles! The first half of the record features the trio – a wonderfully warm group that includes Palle Danielsson on bass and Lenny White on drums – really stretching out on the titles "Feed The Fire" and "A Beautiful Friendship". Then, Johnny Coles joins the trio – and gets a great solo space on a version of "Old Folks" – before the larger group comes in, still with Coles up front in the lead on flugelhorn. Those large group titles include "Smooth Attitudes", "Some Aspects Of Water", and "Skin". CD

Now Again, 1975. New Copy 2 CDs ... $7.99 17.98
Wonderfully fuzzy work from Amanaz – one of the trippiest, headiest groups of the Zamrock scene of the 70s! The guitars here are very full and present – not at a hit you over the head jamming label, but with this rich sonic element that has lots of bassy undercurrents – at a level that makes the album a head-nodding gem all the way through – poised perfectly between some of the more psyche styles of the African scene of the time, and some of the more thoughtful singer-songwriter material. The group have a quality that's surprisingly deep – very soulful, and with a subtle power that comes through strongly – thanks to a mostly-English batch of lyrics (although a few tunes here are in their native Bemba.) No cuts are all-out funky, but all have this great slow-funk sort of charm – and titles include "I Am Very Far", "Sunday Morning", "Khala My Friend", "Green Apple", "Africa", "Making The Scene", "Easy Street", "Big Enough" and "Kale". 2CD package features a full bonus "reverb mix" of the album – even trippier! Jazz harpist Dorothy Ashby has always had one of the most unusual sounds around – and even though it might sound a bit crazy at first, her mix of harp playing with tight jazzy backing is always a winning combination. This early album has Ms Ashby playing with a groovy little combo that includes Frank Wess on flute, Ed Thigpen on drums, and Wendell Marshall on bass. Even at this early age, Dorothy shows her writing skills well with the originals "Aeolian Groove, "Lamentation", and "Spicy" – and she does a nice job with the other standards she chooses to cover. AzanyahOne ... CD
Jazzman (UK), 1987. New Copy ... $8.99
One of the hippest records we've ever heard from the Atlanta scene of the 80s – a spiritual jazz set that feels like something that could have been recorded over a decade before – given the warm acoustic instrumentation, and righteous overall vibe! In fact, it may well have been the late 80s issue of this album that's kept it so lost over the years – a bit late in the game for any audiences digging this type of music, and with an odd date that's possibly gotten it missed by diggers mostly looking for 70s spiritual jazz sessions. Yet whatever the case, the album's a gem through and through – with these long, open tracks that build with a great blend of sax, flute, guitar, piano, and plenty of percussion – as well as the warm, solid basslines of Mamaniji Azanyah, the group's leader. There's a bit of vocals, but overall the album's instrumental – with a vibe that feels like some of the best mid 70s sounds on the Black Fire label. Titles include "The One", "In The Beauty Of Holiness", "Praise", "Guiding Light", and "I Will Surely Come Again". CD

Atlantic/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $10.99 11.98
An incredible little record – and the set where it really all comes together for this legendary funky jazz group! Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the US scene – effortlessly blending their tight jazz skills with a dose of samba soul, and turning out some wonderfully groovy music in the process! There's clearly an influence here from the best years of Earth Wind & Fire – but also more of the edge that you'd expect from the young trio – as the amazing Jose Roberto Bertrami blows us away with his wickedly sharp keyboard solos, as Alexandre Malheiros and Mamao create these beautiful rhythms that go way past anything you might have expected from a trio. The whole thing's wonderful – one of the most soulful Brazilian records of the 70s – and titles include the great cuts "Tarde", "Tamborim Cuica Ganza Berimbau", "Falcon Love Call", and "Aguia Nao Come Mosca". AzymuthAzimuth (Linha Do Horizonte) (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Som Livre/Far Out (UK), 1975. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of the sweetest electric records to come from 70s Brazil – the fabulous first effort from the Azymuth trio, and work that's hardly been matched again! Although the group here have plenty of the warm keyboard touches of their more famous later work, they're also moving in territory that's a bit more abstract as well – using some noisier electronics amidst the smoother ones, to create a style that's somewhere between fusion, electric funk, and some of the more soaring Brazilian rhythms of the post-bossa years! The keyboards of Jose Roberto Bertrami are worth the price of admission alone – and include Fender Rhodes, Arp, and clavinet – plus bits of Hammond organ too! There's more than a few great breaks and samples on the set – and titles include "Brazil", "Caca De Conta", "Melo Dos Dois Bicudos", "Manha", "Periscopio", and "Montreal City". AzymuthButterfly ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2008. Used ... $11.99
Always-great work from Azymuth – one of the few combos who never get stale, no matter how long they keep on grooving! The album's titled after the Herbie Hancock classic "Butterfly" – and it's put together with a sublime quality that really stretches back to the best styles of the 70s fusion generation – both for Herbie and the group! The core trio is still wonderfully in place after all these years – Jose Roberto Bertrami on Fender Rhodes and Hammond, Ivan Conti on drums and percussion, and Alex Malheiros on bass and guitar – and although there's a tiny bit of vocals on the set, they're more instrument-like, and fit in beautifully with the keyboard-driven grooves. Arthur Verocai makes a great appearance on the set on guitar, and also handles arrangements on two cuts – and Robertinho Silva plays some added percussion on the record as well. The group do a wonderful job with Herbie's "Butterfly" – then move onto some of their own great material that includes "Caititu", "Os Cara La", "Morning", "Next Summer In Rio", "New Dawn", and "Avenida Rio Branca". 10 tracks on the CD. Far Out (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $14.99
Amazing early work from Azymuth – rare demo recordings done at the home studio of keyboardist Jose Roberto Bertrami, in the short space before the group issued their legendary debut! The tracks here are as much jazz funk as they are the later modes that Azymuth would put forth – killer instrumentals that are really driven by great keyboard lines from Bertrami, who'd already been making music in other formats for years – and who works here on Fender Rhodes, Arp, Clavinet, Hammond, and a range of other keyboards too! The drums are fantastic, too – handled by a young Ivan Conti, who gets help on percussion from an early fourth member of the group, Ariovaldo Contesini – and as you might guess, the incredible basslines of Ivan Mamao Conti really help the whole thing groove. All material is very well-recorded – these aren't rough or unfinished tracks at all – and the whole thing should just be thought of as a first chapter for the group, right before they started putting out their famous records. Titles include "Prefacio", "Castelo", "Melo Do Cuica", "Xingo", "Laranjeiras", "Eqiupe 68", "Unknown Song For Mario Telles", "Manha", "Duro De Roer", "Quem Tem Medo", "Juntos Mais Uma Vez", and "Bateria Do Mamao". AzymuthOutubro (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Milestone/Far Out (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
Wicked early work from Azymuth – one of the albums that the group recorded when they were really starting to take off on the global scene – burning strong with a soulful fusion vibe, lots of Brazilian rhythm currents, and always hitting all the right notes in their music! The sound here is still relatively spare, and sublimely reliant on the keyboards of Jose Roberto Bertrami – who plays Fender Rhodes, organ, and percussion on the set. Ivan Conti handles the main percussion, though – a great mix of tight work on the drum kit and rootsier, Airto-like elements that are totally great – and the whole thing's driven along nicely by bass and guitar from Alex Malheiros – a perfectly fused lineup that really hits their own groove on the set. Guests include Aleuda on percussion and vocals, Gordinho on surdo, and Doto on repinique – and titles include "Papasong", "Outubro", "Maracana", "Un Amigo", "Carta Pro Airto", and "Dear Limmertz". Warm, wonderful, and incredibly far-reaching in scope – possibly the most ambitious record cut by Azymuth in recent years – a perfect blend of jazzy fusion, Brazilian rhythms, and some of the London broken beat culture that the group have come into contact with through their label, Far Out. The sound is clean and spare – a dance between percussion and keyboards that reminds us how great Azymuth can sound when they keep things simple. A few cuts have vocals, but the overall approach is instrumental – and the record features production and programming by Roc Hunter, and was recorded by Kirk Degiorgio. Titles include "Tempo Classico", "Em Marica", "Partido Novo", "Sudade Do Doutor", "Nome Dele E Joan", "Algoado Doce", and "Rede De Espera". CD has 12 tracks in all. CD

Excellent American release from the brilliant Brazilian fusion outfit Azymuth. While occasionally they managed to get a bit complicated in their arrangements, the songs and groove never suffered for it, and the crisp modern production complements their tight sound nicely, with warm key washes and percolating rhythms throughout. The ten minute "Last Summer In Rio" is a huge stepper's number here in Chicago, with it's sly Rhodes hook, and we've been waiting for forward looking numbers like "The House I Lived In", "What Price Samba" or "May I Have This Dance" to show up on a Gilles Peterson mix CD for years. A cool collection of work from Bob Azzam – a unique talent on the French scene at the start of the 60s, and one who was responsible for some mighty nice grooves! Bob hails from Algeria, and works here in a mix of Latin rhythms and Mid-East inflections – blending the groovy and the exotic, in a style that's unlike anyone else we can really think of at the time! Unlike other hybrids from the US scene – particularly that in the bachelor pad orientalist scene – Bob really grooves right from the start, and keeps things up beat all the way through – mixing tight percussion, jazzy instrumentation, and vocals in a variety of languages – all with a cool, classy vibe that really fits the look of the cover. Talking House, 2008. Used ... $8.99
A great return to form for drummer Donald Bailey – a player who's probably best known for his work in the classic Jimmy Smith Trio of the late 50s/early 60s – but who sounds especially amazing here in a recent, righteous recording! Bailey's working with some very tight talent – the mighty Odeon Pope on tenor sax, Charles Tolliver on trumpet, George Burton on piano, and Tyrone Brown on bass – all players with a lot of depth in their music, and a brooding intensity that makes the record burn a lot more fiercely than anything Bailey ever recorded back in the day. The horns are especially nice – and although Tolliver's only on two of the album's nine tracks, Pope more than holds his own on the others – blowing that heady tenor sound that always grabs attention right from the get-go. A far reaching blend of styles and smoothed out sounds from the Italian scene and the Barrio Jazz Gang – Latin jazz influences and a lean and easy going groove a standout characteristic – but the bring in very eclectic touches from across the board! TCB (Switzerland), 1981/1982. Used ... $9.99
Two European tenor giants – both featured here in a set of live recordings! The first half of the set features the great Gianni Basso on tenor – blowing on long, open-ended tracks with a real old school tenor vibe – almost more soulful than usual for Gianni, with a definite nod to the American sound of the 50s and early 60s. Players include Klaus Koenig on piano, Peter Frei on bass, and Peter Schmidlin on drums – and titles include "Lush Life", "Easy Living", "Groovin High", and "La Valle Dell'Amore". The second half of the record features the great Guy Lafitte – the French scene's biggest tenor tone of the 50s and 60s, blowing in a similarly laidback way – almost moreso than most of Guy's studio albums. Tracks are long, and the rhythm section is similar to the first – except for Pierre Favre on drums. Titles include "Tinto Time", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "Cherokee", and "Climb Every Mountain". CD

✨✧ Bembeya Jazz NationalSyliphone Years ... CD
Sterns (UK), 1960s/1970s. Used 2 CDs ... $19.99
An awe-inspiring mother lode of classic Guinean grooves from one of Africa's greatest bands! Senegal's Orchestra Baobab have become the media favorite of Africa's golden era, but it only takes one spin of this fabulous anthology to realize that Bembeya Jazz National were as good as any band the continent ever produced. As the title says, this material is culled from the recordings the band made for the great state-owned Syliphone label, and it reflects an era of dazzling creative potency – sensual Afro-Cuban tropes are blended into a powerful mix of Mande melodies, sashaying grooves, and jaw-dropping solos. Most of this collection features lead vocals by the sweet and soulful Aboubacar Demba Camara, who died in a tragic car accident in 1973, while the prodigiously talented Sekou "Diamond Fingers" Diabate unspools one astonishing lead after another. A still-powerful version of the group reunited in 2001, but nothing can match these recordings. Truly essential stuff! Tracks include "Dembaty Galant", "Waraba", "Super Tentemba", "Fatoumata", and "Sina Mousso". CD

Arision (UK), 2006. Used ... $3.99
The record we've been waiting for Big Bang to make for years – a full-length set that lives up to all the great promise of recent singles and remixes, served up in a jazz-based style that's even deeper than before! There's a fair bit of acoustic piano nestled in here next to the electric keys – alongside instrumentation that includes plenty of percussion and bits of horns (including saxes from Nathan Haines) – on tunes that are done in rhythms that are much more modal than the broken-styled London work from which Big Bang first started getting notice. The vibe here is rich and classic – even more so on the vocal numbers, which feature performances from Xan Blacq, Rasiyah, and Alexander – and the record is one of the best we've heard from London in awhile – one that sets a whole new level not just for Big Bang, but for the whole scene as well! Titles include "Dancin Nights", "My Favorite Things", "Summer Fields", "The Smile In Your Eyes", "Spiral Waltz", "Batucada Mondiale", "Spinning 6 Turning 8", "To The Full Every Minute", "Sweet Y Sour", and "Yo Yo Jazz". A record that's got to be one of the coolest recorded in Calgary during the early 80s – as it offers up a really unusual blend of modes that definitely lives up to its title, and which also borrows a bit from Indian music as well! We love this group – and with each new record, they give us reason to love them even more – and realize that their totality is even greater than the sum of their many all-star parts! The lineup alone is enough – Wayne Escoffery on tenor, Jeremy Pelt on trombone, James Burton III on trombone, Victor Gould on piano, Rashaan Carter on bass, and Mark Whitfield on drums – but together, they sound even more amazing – kind of crackling and bristling with energy, as if the players are keenly engaged in each other's company – not in a competitive way, but with a collaborative energy that even tops most other groups comprised of leaders in a single combo! Soaring colors are balanced by beautiful depths – and titles include "Iron Man", "For The Kids", "No Words Needed", "Twin Towers", "Involuntary Servitude", "Mr Willis", and "Ascension". CD

One of the most unusual recordings we've ever heard from legendary drummer Art Blakey – not a Jazz Messengers session, but a rare Parisian performance by a quintet billed as the New Jazz Men! The lineup is fantastic – Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Nathan Davis on tenor, Jaki Byard on piano, and Reggie Workman on bass – players who express more modern intentions at times than some of Blakey's usual lineups – and who definitely earn the "new jazz" of their name – as they stretch out here on three long tracks that are superbly recorded by French radio ORTF! Hubbard is tremendous – really finding himself at this point in his career, and full of new phrasing and amazing sounds that really blow us away – and Davis is a real treat in this setting, which is every bit as great as his key overseas recordings of the period. Titles include a side-long version of "Crisis" – plus long readings of "The Hub" and "Blue Moon" – all wonderful! LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition pressing – in a very cool flipback cover, like a 60s release!)

✨✧ Art BlakeyJazz Messengers '70 (Japanese pressing) ... LP
Victor (Japan), 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
An excellent modern soul jazz set from Art Blakey – recorded in Japan in 1970, with a group that included the excellent tenor player Carlos Garnett, who had just filled the chair in the band that was vacated by Billy Harper! Garnett's playing very nicely, but perhaps with a bit more restraint than on his later albums for Muse – and the tracks are all nice and rolling, with a mix of modal soul jazz and straighter hard bop. Titles include "What The World Needs Now Is Peace & Love", "Politely", "Night In Tunisia", and "Blues March". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original Japanese gatefold pressing! Cover has some light wear, especially on the spine.)

Art BlakeyMeet You At The Jazz Corner Of The World Vol 1 ... LP
Blue Note, 1960. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, recording in the very familiar territory of the Birdland nightclub – in a format that was handled previously by the Blue Note label, but maybe never with a lineup this great! The performance features the sublime frontline trio of Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor, and Bobby Timmons on piano – all players that are their youthful best, and completely on fire with creative imagination under Blakey's leadership – the start of a great run for all of them as solo stars too. The tracks are long, and even if the tunes are sometimes familiar, the performances are spectacular – that special Jazz Messengers energy that makes records like this so great. This first volume includes the tracks "The Opener", "What Know", "Round About Midnight", and "The Breeze and I". LP, Vinyl record album

Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersAt The Cafe Bohemia Vol 1 ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1955. Used ... $14.99
A classic early set featuring the Jazz Messengers back when the group still included Horace Silver, Hank Mobley, and Kenny Dorham – one of the earliest and purest versions of Blakey's hardbop vision, touched with the slightly exotic lyricism of Silver, which gives the tracks a wonderful edge. The playing is excellent throughout – and the album's the kind of live stormer that shows why the group were such a huge draw right out of the box, and why they performed as well (if not better) in a live setting than they did ain a studio one! Tracks include "Minor's Holiday", "The Theme", "Prince Albert", and "Deciphering The Message" – and the CD features 3 bonus tracks, all long, plus great remastering! CD
(SHMCD pressing, includes obi.)
