2PacStrictly For My Ni**az ... LP
Interscope, 1993. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $26.99 34.99
A masterful second album from 2Pac – and a breakout that helped lay the groundwork for his brief but ever rising repuation and legacy! Kicking off with the thumping "Holler If Ya Hear Me" with the frenetic, almost Bomb Squad level wall of sound production by Live Squad that's hammered home all the more with a Chuck D vocal sample in the mix, this record has a huge sound all the way through, much bigger sounding than the debut. Classic! "Keep Ya Head Up", "I Get Around", "Strictly 4 My NI**AZ", "Point The Finga", "Last Wordz", "Souljah's Revenge", "Peep Game", "Strugglin", "Guess Who's Back", "Representin' 93", "The Streetz Are Deathrow", "Papa'z Song" and "5 Deadly Venomz". Nick GarrieNightmare Of JB Stanislas (with bonus tracks) ... CD
AZ/Tapete (Germany), 1969. New Copy ... $16.99
Genius work by a singer-songwriter you've never heard of – a beautiful little album recorded in late 60s Paris, but done with English language lyrics! Nick Garrie's a hell of a great songwriter – one with the poetry of Leonard Cohen, the fragility of Tim Hardin, and the willingness to record with the larger arrangements that often brought out the best sounds from each of those singers! The set has Nick singing and playing guitar alongside full backings arranged by French producer Eddie Vartan – never too over the top, but spacious enough to set the album proudly next to the best early Columbia work by Cohen, or some of Hardin's sweetest sides for Verve. Titles include "Bungles Tours", "David's Prayer", "Ink Pot Eyes", "Little Bird", "Stephanie City", "Deeper Tones Of Blue", and "Can I Stay With You". Bonus tracks include "Queen Of Spades", "Close Your Eyes", and a number of rare demos too! CD

Shirley MurdockShirley Murdock (expanded edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Elektra/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1985. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
The breakout album from Shirley Murdock – a singer who first rose to fame working with Roger Troutman and Zapp – and who gets plenty of help here from that side of the soul spectrum too! Roger produced and plays on the record, and also wrote most of the songs too – and Larry Troutman and others provide most of the instrumentation – all with a groove that's as funky and punchy as Zapp at their best – which means that Shirley's got to be one hell of a singer to rise above the basslines, beats, and keyboards! Fortunately, Murdock's got a hell of a lot of power in her voice – which really gets unleashed here in a wonderful way, then spins down for a few great ballads too – all to make a very fully-formed set that's gone onto be one of the mainstream soul classics of the time. Titles include "As We Lay", "Truth Or Dare", "Tribute", "Be Free", "No More", "Go On Without You", "Danger Zone", "Teaser", and "The One I Need". 2CD version features 19 more bonus tracks - including "As We Lay (rmx)", "Go On Without You (ext mix)", "No More (rmx)", "Bee Free (sexy sax thang mix)", "Truth Or Dare (European mix)", "Tribute (ext mix)", "Az We Lay (horizontal mix)", "Be Free (bareback mix)", "As We Lay (midnight mix)" – plus regular and extended versions of "Computer Love" with Zapp, and "Girl Cut It Out" with Roger. VariousShe Came From Hungary – 60s Beat Girls From The Eastern Bloc (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Qualiton/Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $24.99 28.99
Great girl pop from a really unlikely source – not the better-known British and French female singles that rocked the European scene in the 60s – but a whole host of more obscure numbers from behind the Iron Curtain – all tracks recorded in Hungary, but hardly ever issued to the rest of the world at the time! Turns out, those Hungarians were very much in line with the kinds of sounds that were romping up London, Paris, and Rome at the time – beat-heavy, soul-influenced grooves that bring a new sort of brashness to the female singers in the lead – and give them a kind of universal appeal, even if you can't understand the lyrics at all! At some level, the instrumentation here is more than enough – loads of groovy organ lines, thumping bass, soaring horns, and all sorts of other groovy touches – but the unusual language of the vocals adds a very cool other aspect to the sound. All tracks are from the Qualiton catalog, and presented here with detailed notes and history in English – for titles tha tinclude "Ez Az Utolso Randevunk" by Eva Nagy, "Konyorogni Nem Fogok" by Zsuzsa Matray, "Keresek Egy Fiut" by Maria Wittek, "Mindig Tanul Az Ember" by Beata Karda, "Fekete Beat" by Sarolta Zalatnay, "Ha Csak Egy Fokkal Szebb Az Ordognel" by Gabi Fenyvesi, "Judas Vagy" by Kyri Ambrus, "Keresem A Szot" by Zsuzsa Koncz, and "Zsakutca" by Clementina Magay. ✨✧ Pete RockSoul Survivor II ... LP
BBE/Rapster (UK), 2004. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A very strong set from the great Pete Rock – a big improvement on the hit-and-miss SS album on Loud, and perhaps the best full length vocals album to bear the Pete Rock name since Mecca And The Soul Brother! There's really not a lot that we can say about the Pete Rock pedigree that you don't already know, so we won't try. Just rest assured that Soul Brother #1 brings the A-game, and the mostly underground and/or major label casualties on the rhymes bring the genuine flow. Pharoahe Monch, Little Brother, Skillz, Krumbsnatcha, RZA & GZA, Dead Prez, Talib Kweli and J Dilla make the spot – plus a couple appearances by CL Smooth! Ignore the middling reviews you may have read – Pete's raised the bar very high in the past, and the result is that a lot of writers expect pure gold to filter out of the speakers. Plus, there are these other writers that seem to have some kind of brain disorder that prevents them from appreciating real hip hop. Tracks include the great single "War Zone" with Dead Prez, "We Good" with Kardinall Official, "Give It To Ya" with Little Brother, "Beef" with Krumbsnatcha, "Head Rush" with RZA & GZA, "It's A Love Thing" with CL Smooth and Denosh, "Ni**az Know" with J-Dilla and lots more! Habibi Funk, 1973. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
Monstrous funk from Morocco – unreleased material recorded in 1973, with a sound that should have revolutionized North Africa at the time! The group works here in a really raw blend of heavy percussion and riffing guitar – produced with lots of edge and echo, and delivered with the spirited vibe you'd expect from the ensemble's appearance on the cover! There's plenty of criss-crossing between the lead and chorus vocals on the set – but the guitar gets plenty of space too, and has this really sharp quality that's clearly informed by psych, but funkier overall – and very different than any work of the sort from farther down the continent. Drums are super-heavy, and the basslines match as well – on titles that include "Albaki", "Taali", "Chamaa", "Aflana", "Kaddaba", "Moulate Salef", and "Al Hadaoui". CD

Jazzaggression, 2015. New Copy ... $19.99
A beautifully spiritual set of duets between bassist Teemu Akerblom and saxophonist Mike Zenger – playing together here without any other instrumentation at all! Akerblom sets things up in a modal mode on most numbers – but mellower, without any piano or drums – and Zenger then blows these long, soulful solos on alto sax and flute – the former with a tone that's often quite deep, with a great deal of feeling. Things get slightly more outside and improvised as the set moves on – a shift that gives the whole thing a bit of a loft jazz vibe – and titles include "Peaceful Mornings", "So One Has To Go", "Abstract Blues & The Truth", "Frozen Land", and "Aurajoen Rannoilla". Toshiko AkioshiToshiko & Modern Jazz (aka Toshiko Mariano & Her Big Band Recorded In Tokyo) ... LP
Columbia (Japan), 1964. Near Mint- ... $38.99
Killer rare jazz material from Japan! Toshiko Akioshi was one of Japan's greatest jazz musicians, and in the late 50s she came to the US, made her name, and married alto great Charlie Mariano. At some point in the early 60s, they moved back to Japan and had a rich influence on the jazz scene in Tokyo – as is ably demonstrated by this LP! The album's a fantastic set of large group arrangements by Toshiko and Charlie – and the soloists (besides the two of them) include some of Japan's greatest players, like Sleepy Matsumoto and Shigeo Suzuki. Just to make sure the whole thing swings, there's rhythm by an American duo of Paul Chambers & Jimmy Cobb, and believe us, they do everything they can to kick the group hard! We've loved this one for years. Nice titles include "The Shout", "Israel", "Land Of Peace", and "Kisarazu Jinku". Also issued in the US on Vee Jay. LP, Vinyl record album
(70s Japanese pressing, with insert! Cover has one slightly bumped corner, but is nice overall.)

Now Again, 1975. Near Mint- 2LP ... $24.99
Wonderfully fuzzy work from Amanaz – one of the trippiest, headiest groups of the Zamrock scene of the 70s! The guitars here are very full and present – not at a hit you over the head jamming label, but with this rich sonic element that has lots of bassy undercurrents – at a level that makes the album a head-nodding gem all the way through – poised perfectly between some of the more psyche styles of the African scene of the time, and some of the more thoughtful singer-songwriter material. The group have a quality that's surprisingly deep – very soulful, and with a subtle power that comes through strongly – thanks to a mostly-English batch of lyrics (although a few tunes here are in their native Bemba.) No cuts are all-out funky, but all have this great slow-funk sort of charm – and titles include "I Am Very Far", "Sunday Morning", "Khala My Friend", "Green Apple", "Africa", "Making The Scene", "Easy Street", "Big Enough" and "Kale". Bethlehem, 1955. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A very cool quartet with a very unusual sound – one that mixes up reeds, piano, and vibes with a very fresh approach – one that's partly west coast cool, and partly east coast modern! Key players in the group include Bryce Rhode on piano and Errol Buddle on bassoon – both musicians who'd make bigger waves in the 60s back home in Australian – and the set also features excellent vibes by John (Jack) Brokensha, who'd stay on these shores and make some groovy records for the US, and Dick Healy on flute. The group's joined by Jimmy Gannon on bass and Nick Stabulas on drums – and titles include "Saxophone Pads", "Tune For Jaimey", "Spring Is Here", "Nostalgia", and "Thou Swell". LP, Vinyl record album

Ethel AzamaCool Heat ... LP
Liberty, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $6.99
An album of straight jazz vocals from Hawaiian singer Ethel Azama – an artist who's perhaps better known for her more exotic Liberty album with Martin Denny, but who's working here in a much straighter mode with backings from the great Marty Paich! Paich is at the height of his powers here – using that warmly jazzy approach that could make just about any singer great – so when combined with the strength of Ethel's vocals, the record makes for a very nice sound all the way through! The "cool heat" in the title comes from the fact that some of the arrangements here have a nice 50s LA jazz component (complete with a few solos) – yet still swing with enough heat to groove! Titles include a great version of "You Smell So Good", plus "Daybreak", "All I Need Is You", "You're So Bad For Me", "Time After Time", "I'm Glad There Is You", and "Like Someone In Love". Far Out (Brazil), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99
A record with an unusual source, but a sound that puts it right up there with some of the most heavenly rare Brazilian albums of the 70s – served up here in a folksy, jazzy mix of acoustic and electric elements – all with help from heavyweights who include Victor Assis Brasil, Mauricio Einhorn, Durval Ferreira, and the Azymuth trio! The songs are based around creations by a Brazilian comedy duo, but they hardly sound anything like that at all – as they're easy-going, mellow-grooving, and have these vocals that flow beautifully amidst percussion, guitar, and keyboards! There are two monologue tracks in Portuguese – both with audience laughter – but all other tracks are sung, and delivered with some wonderful arrangements by Jose Roberto Bertrami and Jose Menezes. Titles include "Negra Brecho", "Ao Billilico", "Tema Do Azambuja", "A Turma", "Verde", "Maristela", and "O Poste Da Rua Jorge De Lima". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ AzymuthAguia Nao Come Mosca ... CD
Atlantic/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $10.99 11.98
An incredible little record – and the set where it really all comes together for this legendary funky jazz group! Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the US scene – effortlessly blending their tight jazz skills with a dose of samba soul, and turning out some wonderfully groovy music in the process! There's clearly an influence here from the best years of Earth Wind & Fire – but also more of the edge that you'd expect from the young trio – as the amazing Jose Roberto Bertrami blows us away with his wickedly sharp keyboard solos, as Alexandre Malheiros and Mamao create these beautiful rhythms that go way past anything you might have expected from a trio. The whole thing's wonderful – one of the most soulful Brazilian records of the 70s – and titles include the great cuts "Tarde", "Tamborim Cuica Ganza Berimbau", "Falcon Love Call", and "Aguia Nao Come Mosca". AzymuthDemos 1973 to 1975 – Vol 1 ... LP
Far Out (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $19.99
Amazing early work from Azymuth – rare demo recordings done at the home studio of keyboardist Jose Roberto Bertrami, in the short space before the group issued their legendary debut! The tracks here are as much jazz funk as they are the later modes that Azymuth would put forth – killer instrumentals that are really driven by great keyboard lines from Bertrami, who'd already been making music in other formats for years – and who works here on Fender Rhodes, Arp, Clavinet, Hammond, and a range of other keyboards too! The drums are fantastic, too – handled by a young Ivan Conti, who gets help on percussion from an early fourth member of the group, Ariovaldo Contesini – and as you might guess, the incredible basslines of Ivan Mamao Conti really help the whole thing groove. All material is very well-recorded – these aren't rough or unfinished tracks at all – and the whole thing should just be thought of as a first chapter for the group, right before they started putting out their famous records. Titles on this first volume include "Prefacio", "Castelo", "Melo Do Cuica", "Xingo", "Laranjeiras", "Eqiupe 68", and "Unknown Song For Mario Telles". LP, Vinyl record album

AzymuthLight As A Feather (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Milestone/Far Out (UK), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
One of Azymuth's best-remembered albums from their American years on Milestone – a really killer classic that beautifully blends Brazilian and American styles of fusion! There's a simple, elegant feel to these tunes that takes off nicely from the group's previous album for Atlantic in Brazil – a pushing forward of the soulful sides of their style, but with just the right blend of quirkier elements as well – one that still keeps the edge of the early years, yet helps the group reach out with a wonderfully warm sound! Most tracks are quite spare, and without any too-smooth polishing in production – and titles include the classic "Jazz Carnival", a funky fusion classic if there ever was one – plus "Light As A Feather", "Avenida Das Manguerias", "This Exists", "Partido Alto", "Dona Olimpia", "Amazonia", and "Young Embrace". Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $14.99 18.98
A cool collection of work from Bob Azzam – a unique talent on the French scene at the start of the 60s, and one who was responsible for some mighty nice grooves! Bob hails from Algeria, and works here in a mix of Latin rhythms and Mid-East inflections – blending the groovy and the exotic, in a style that's unlike anyone else we can really think of at the time! Unlike other hybrids from the US scene – particularly that in the bachelor pad orientalist scene – Bob really grooves right from the start, and keeps things up beat all the way through – mixing tight percussion, jazzy instrumentation, and vocals in a variety of languages – all with a cool, classy vibe that really fits the look of the cover. Titles include "Ven Aqui A Bailar", "Ismailia", "Mustapha", "C'Est Ecrit Dans Le Ciel", "Amen Twist", "Cha Cha Mambo", "Le Marsupilami", "Kili Watch", "Dracula Cha Cha Cha", "You Are My Destiny", "Fleur Du Diable", and "Habibi Rock". ✨✧ Baroque Jazz TrioBaroque Jazz Trio (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Saravah/Souffle Continu (France), 1970. New Copy ... About October 25, 2019
Beautiful stuff – and one of the most stunning jazz albums ever recorded – a blinding mix of harpsichord, cello, and Indian percussion – with a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of! The album was the brainchild of the cross-culturally fertile Saravah records at the end of the 60s – home to experimental work by Brigitte Fontaine, Barney Wilen, The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, and others. From the start, the group wanted to work in a boundary-less territory that really pushed the limits of jazz – drawing in inspiration from world music, and working in a style they called "baroque", to emphasize the bizarreness of their project. Given the heavy use of tabla on the set, the album's got a really driving rhythmic component – making for some funky numbers that have been sought-after jazz-dance tracks for years. And the role of the harpsichord is surprisingly strong – played in almost modal lines, but with a hesitating, lilting groove that's quite different to similar use of the piano at the time. Titles include "Delhi Daily", "Chandigardh", "Latin Baroque", "Zoma", and "Cesar Go Back Home". CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Largo" and "Orientasie". CD

Two fantastic tracks from this groundbreaking French group of the 70s – neither of which were on their famous album for the Saravah label! "Orientasie" has this slow-building mix of plucked cello and drums, then switches to bowing of the cello whole harpsichord grooves into the mix – often played with a slight bit of distortion, which really sounds incredible! "Largo" has all three elements working in a more swinging mode from the start, but the harpsichord really goes wild once things get going – and the cello hits a pretty great solo too! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Les BaxterAfrican Jazz ... LP
Capitol, Late 50s. Very Good ... $34.99
One of the coolest, grooviest records we've ever heard from the great Les Baxter – and a real standout set, even amidst his other exotica albums for Capitol! This one really delivers on the "jazz" promised in the title – thanks to strong tenor solos from Plas Johnson, who plays in this bold, lusty style that's right out front in the mix – over cool exotic rhythms that come through with more force than some of the other Baxter albums from the time! There's some nice vibes on the album, and plenty of percussion as well – and titles include "Congo Train", "Walkin Watusi", "Ostrich Hunt", "Balinese Bongos", and "Mombasa After Midnight". Fantastic stuff, and recorded with beautiful sound! LP, Vinyl record album

Les BaxterBrazil Now ... LP
GNP, Late 60s. Very Good ... $9.99
Fab bossa from Les Baxter – one of his few albums done in a Brazilian style, and a really wonderful record! The sound is a combination of Les exotica and chorus styles – forged into a bossa beat, and done with a sweetly swinging groove that's every bit as great as some of the bigger arrangers from Brazil in the late 60s. Jazzy bits come into contact with groovy bits – and the voices are always perfectly spaced as to allow for some strong instrumental interplay. The whole thing's a massively sweet delight – and we love it! Titles include "Who Will Buy", "A Man & A Woman", "Balan Samba", "Canta De Ossanha", "Tristeza", "Laia Ladaia", and "Somewhere In The Hills". LP, Vinyl record album

One of our favorite albums ever from the mighty Les Baxter – and one of the few from his Capitol years that really has a strong jazz component! The approach here is similar to Les' classic African Jazz set – with lots of rootsy percussion at the core, maybe more than usual for Baxter – mixed with larger instrumentation, plus a bit of vibes and other percussion – all topped with the soulful tenor of Plas Johnson, whose sound her really brings the whole thing together! The mix of jungle exotica and tenor is completely sublime – and titles include "Amazon Falls", "Coco", "Isle Of Cuba", "Jungla Brava", "Go Chango", and "Blue Jungle". Heinie BeauMoviesville Jazz ... LP
Coral, Mid 50s. Very Good ... $14.99
An obscure west coast session led by reedman Heinie Beau – a player who mostly recorded with film orchestras of the 50s, but who sounds great here in the company of better-known LA names like Howard Roberts, John Graas, Don Fagerquist, Buddy Collette, and Red Callender! The style here is a bit like some of Graas' albums of the time – especially for Decca – tightly arranged, with lots of bold colors and rhythms – but still plenty of space for breakout solo moments on flute, alto, trumpet, tenor, and other reeds. Beau's conception is really wonderful – filled with modern influences, but always strongly swinging – almost in the jazz soundtrack mode you might expect from the title! Tracks include "The Three Heads Of Adam", "In Your Private Eye", "Scotland Yardbird", "The Cool Tin Roof Story", "Moonset Boulevard", "Gullible Travels", and "The Gina Pastrami Cha Cha Cha". Blue Note, 1960. Very Good- ... $49.99
A crackling live set from Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers! The recording is one of a few that Blakey made at Birdland – and it may well be the best, as it features his killer 1960 lineup with Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, and Bobby Timmons all in the group. Tracks are longer than the group's studio sides – with an incredible mix of fire and lyricism, soul and energy, showing the group at their best in a setting like this! This first volume includes the tracks "The Opener", "What Know", "Round About Midnight", and "The Breeze and I". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono 63rd Street pressing with RVG stamp and ear, including the Blue Note inner sleeve. Cover has a split spine, splitting in the bottom seam, discoloration from age, and a large name in marker and some pen on back.)

Art BlakeyParis Jazz Concert – Olympia 13 May 1961 Part 1 ... CD
Malaco, 1961. Used ... $7.99
Excellent lost live work by Art Blakey – playing here with one of the best-ever versions of the Jazz Messengers! The frontline is held down by Wayne Shorter, Bobby Timmons, and Lee Morgan – the firey trio who put Blakey's group on the map as one of the best-ever hardbop ensembles of the 50s and 60s! The quintet is playing here before a very live audience, at the Olympia in Paris, during a time when the Jazz Messengers were having a very fruitful relationship with the city. This first volume features some excellent long tracks – including 12 minute versions of Timmons' "So Tired", Morgan's "Yama", and Shorter's "The Summit" – plus a version of "Close Your Eyes", which the group always did well! Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersChild's Dance ... LP
Prestige, 1972. Near Mint- ... $24.99
Seminal Art Blakey material from the early 70s – a real change from his 60s vibe on Blue Note, in a style that really opens up to a host of more spiritual touches! The album's a counterpart to the classic Buhania set, also issued on Prestige at the time – and like that record, this one features a very spiritual group of younger players, and some slight electric touches too – all with a sound that's almost at the level of work on the Strata East or Black Jazz labels! Players include Woody Shaw on trumpet, Ramon Morris on tenor and flute, George Cables on piano and Fender Rhodes, and Buddy Terry on soprano sax – and tracks are nice and long, often with a hip modal groove. Titles include "Child's Dance", "CC", and "Song For A Lonely Woman". LP, Vinyl record album

Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersDrum Suite ... LP
Columbia, 1956/1957. Very Good- ... $14.99
An incredible early experimental album from Art Blakey – one of the first to feature him in expanded percussion format! Side one of the album features the extended "Drum Suite" – a set of 3 tracks ("The Sacrifice", "Cubano Chant", and "Oscalypso") that has Blakey and Jo Jones on drums, joined by Sabu Martinez on bongos and Charles Wright on tympani and gong. Ray Bryant snakes some soulful piano through the set and Oscar Pettiford is on bass and cello – and the overall feeling of the side is similar to some of Blakey's work in the format for Blue Note – like the albums Afro-Drum Orgy or Holiday for Percussion. Side two has straight hard bop, played by Blakey's 1957 combo that included Jackie McLean and Bill Hardman – and the group grooves hard on a classic reading of "Nica's Tempo", plus the cuts "D's Dilemma" and "Just For Marty". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono 6 eye pressing with deep groove. Cover has a half split top seam and some aging.)

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers w/ Barney WilenLes Liaisons Dangereuses (with bonus track) ... CD
Fontana/Universal (Japan), 1959. Used ... $11.99
Art Blakey's soundtrack to this fantastic French film is one of his best non-Blue Note albums ever – and it's got the additional bonus of featuring performances by the great French tenor star Barney Wilen! The tunes here are way more than just short scene-setting soundtrack numbers – and are instead some incredibly memorable numbers from these great years of the Jazz Messengers – handled with all the fire of their Blue Note sides. The date was recorded in New York – with Wilen on tenor, Lee Morgan on trumpet, and Bobby Timmons on piano – and the tracks are a great mix of hardbop riffs and very catchy jazzy themes for the soundtrack. Titles include "No Problem", "Weehawken Mad Pad", "Valmontana", and "Miguel's Party". CD includes and alternative version of "No Hay Problema". CD

✨✧ Art Blakey & Thelonius MonkBlue Monk (aka Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers With Thelonious Monk) ... LP
Atlantic (Japan), 1957. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Angular Monk meets hard-driving Art Blakey – in a session that's quite unique, and which has gone onto become one of the best-remembered Atlantic jazz sessions of the late 50s! The album features Blakey in that key non-Blue Note year of 1957 – a time when he was working with a variety of players, at a variety of labels, and taking some real chances with his music before settling into his more established hit Jazz Messengers sound. The group here is Art's own – with Johnny Griffin on tenor, Bill Hardman on trumpet, and Spanky DeBrest on bass – augmented by the piano of Thelonious Monk – a match that might seem unlikely at first, but not so much so after you consider the great work that Monk and Griffin did together at Riverside during the late 50s. There's a nice match between Johnny's sharp-edged tenor and Monk's imaginative playing – and if anything, the record has Blakey, Hardman, and DeBrest moving dynamically to keep up with the flurry of modern ideas coming from Griffin and Monk! Tracks are almost all originals by Thelonious too – a fact that definitely helps keep up the "Monk-ish" sound of the record – titles that include "Evidence", "Blue Monk", "I Mean You", and "Rhythm A Ning" – alongside Griffin's "Purple Shades". LP, Vinyl record album
(Japanese Victor pressing with obi in a flip-back cover.)

Art Blakey/Modern Jazz QuartetArt Blakey's Jazz Messengers With Thelonious Monk/Blues At Carnegie Hall ... CD
Collectables, 1958/1967. Used ... $7.99
An unlikely pairing of albums, but another nice 2-fer of classic Atlantic sides. The Jazz Messengers album is a great one – and features the firey hardbop of Blakey's late 50's Messengers (with Johnny Griffin and Bill Hardman) meeting the modernist piano playing of Monk, who was really hitting his stride at this point on his own Riverside recordings. The session's an interesting one, and if it lacks the groove of the usual Blakey album, Monk more than makes up for any lack of soulfulness by throwing in some nice complicated piano lines. We still prefer Bobby Timmons to Monk with Blakey – but the album's worth having, and includes nice Monk tracks like "Evidence", "Blue Monk", "I Mean You", and "Purple Shades". The MJQ session's a live one, and features the usual tightly arranged chamber jazz approach. Tracks on that one include "Bag's Groove", "Blues Milanese", "Pyramid", and "The Cylinder". CD
