Nick GarrieNightmare Of JB Stanislas (with bonus tracks) ... LP
AZ/Tapete (Germany), 1969. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $34.99
Genius work by a singer-songwriter you've never heard of – a beautiful little album recorded in late 60s Paris, but done with English language lyrics! Nick Garrie's a hell of a great songwriter – one with the poetry of Leonard Cohen, the fragility of Tim Hardin, and the willingness to record with the larger arrangements that often brought out the best sounds from each of those singers! The set has Nick singing and playing guitar alongside full backings arranged by French producer Eddie Vartan – never too over the top, but spacious enough to set the album proudly next to the best early Columbia work by Cohen, or some of Hardin's sweetest sides for Verve. Titles include "Bungles Tours", "David's Prayer", "Ink Pot Eyes", "Little Bird", "Stephanie City", "Deeper Tones Of Blue", and "Can I Stay With You". Bonus tracks include "Queen Of Spades", "Close Your Eyes", and a number of rare demos too! LP, Vinyl record album

Brigitte BardotLa Belle Et Le Blues ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
Brigitte Bardot's best known on these shores as an actress, but during the 60s she cut some really fantastic work on the scene in Paris – including a fair bit of groovers that were done with help from the legendary Serge Gainsbourg! Bardot provided a fantastic new voice in the world of pop music – a singer who was unabashedly open about her desires, and very different than the more melancholy stars of a few years before – a quality that's further emphasized by the wonderfully groovy instrumentation used on most of these tracks! Production and arrangements are superb – and put this music in the best territory of the grooviest 60s French pop by artists like Serge Gainsbourg, France Gall, Jacques Dutronc, and a rare few others. This is the first-ever English-annotated collection of work from the period – and features a whopping 25 tracks from her recordings for Philips and Disc AZ – titles that include "Harley Davidson", "Contact", "Neu Au Soleil", "Je Danse Donc Je Suis", "La Madrague", "Les Hommes Endormis", "Je Voudrais Perdre La Memoire", "Mr Sun", "Le Diable Est Anglais", "Tu Es Venu Mon Amour", "John Et Michel", "Gang Gang", and duets with Serge Gainsbourg on "Bonnie & Clyde" and "Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus". Still impressive work from one of the most uncomprimising stars to breakout so big in the late 90s/early 00s. Includes "Ruff Ryder's Anthem", "Look Thru My Eyes", "Let Me Fly", "How's It Goin' Down", "Crime Story", "I Can Feel It", "Stop Being Greedy", "Ni**az Done Started Something", "For My Dogs" and more. 19 tracks including skits. ✨✧ AlkaholiksESP (Everyday Street Poets) Demos EP ... LP
Dope Folks, 1991. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A raw, funky EP of early Alkaholiks material – pre-Loud/RCA era material produced by E Swift – and it's a vital slice of dawn of the 90s LA hip hop! The title ESP refers to the trio's early moniker, Everyday Street Poets, and it's timeless stuff with a rawer vibe than the major label recordings to follow – but it's not raw as in "unfinished" sounding, it's gritty, but wholy worthy of their legacy and a real gem that any fan of timeless, golden age west coast hip hop oughta love. Includes "We Gets Funky", "Mr. Troublemaker", "Ni**az Ain't Laughing No More", "Wadadang", "L.A. Law" and "Welcome To The Grooveyard". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ ServicemenMeet The Servicemen – Classic Soul From Phoenix, Arizona (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Wind Hit, Mid 60s. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Classic styled and classic worthy R&B vocal group soul from The Servicemen – a group based at Luke Air Force Base near Phoenix, AZ – a mix of uptempo productions and sweet acapellas cut in '66 & '67! A few numbers have lit up the UK Northern Soul scene in the past decade or so, but for the most part this material has languished undiscovered, and it's well worth checking out. The rhythms are tight and sharp, and there's some nice production touches on some of it, including some vibes and solid horn arrangements, but the focus is on the group vocals, left to lead the way on the acapella versions. A mix of uptempo numbers and ballads, with titles including the main and acapella versions of "Are You Angry", "I Need A Helping Hand" and "My Turn", "I'll Stop Loving You", "Close Your Eyes", "Right Around The Corner", the acapellas "Come Back To Me" and "Why Can't You Be True". Antonio Adolfo, Brazil & BrazucaDestiny ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2007. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
The return of a legend – and a tremendously groovy little record! Brazilian keyboardist/composer Antonio Adolfo's been making records for years – but easily his greatest albums were those cut at the end of the 60s with his Brazuka group – a cool combination of funky rhythms, electric keyboards, spacious production, and female vocals – all wrapped up with that glorious Blue Brazil sound of the EMI/Odeon label. Here, Adolfo recaptures that sound beautifully – returning to modes he hasn't touched in decades – and getting tremendous treatment from the Far Out label, who really help him hit that classic sound right. The record's an instantly timeless set that rivals all of Antonio's wonderful work from many years back – recorded with Adolfo on keyboards, live jazzy rhythms, a bit of strings, and twin harmony vocals from daughters Carol Saboya and Luisa Saboia – soaring out beautifully with a really groovy sound. The whole thing's wonderful – even better than you might expect – and titles include "Bola Da Vez", "Papo Furado", "Luizao", "Eu E Voce", "Tudo E Brasil", "Domingo Azul", "Tao Iguais", "SOS Amazonas", "Sonho Estelar", and "Dono Do Mundo". Akerblom & ZengerAkerblom & Zenger – Live At Roma Jazz 2015 ... LP
Jazzaggression, 2015. New Copy ... $19.99
A beautifully spiritual set of duets between bassist Teemu Akerblom and saxophonist Mike Zenger – playing together here without any other instrumentation at all! Akerblom sets things up in a modal mode on most numbers – but mellower, without any piano or drums – and Zenger then blows these long, soulful solos on alto sax and flute – the former with a tone that's often quite deep, with a great deal of feeling. Things get slightly more outside and improvised as the set moves on – a shift that gives the whole thing a bit of a loft jazz vibe – and titles include "Peaceful Mornings", "So One Has To Go", "Abstract Blues & The Truth", "Frozen Land", and "Aurajoen Rannoilla". Great later work from Monty Alexander – a record from a time when he maybe didn't have some of the funk or gimmicks of his earlier albums, but which also shows this mature command of the keyboard that Alexander never had on the piano in his youth! The date is one of those well-recorded trio sessions by the Limetree label – an imprint that always seemed to bring out the best in pianists – and Monty's group here features Lynn Seaton on bass and Duffy Jackson on drums – players who step back at all the right points to allow Alexander to feel a majestic flow on the piano, then come in and swing with some help from percussionist Steve Grier as well. Titles include "Crying", "Caribbean Circle", "Look Up", "Renewal", "The River", and "Maybe September". CD

Beautiful work from pianist Geri Allen – a set that features the musician both with her trio, and with a larger nonet that was put together as part of her winning the 1996 Jazzpar prize – as well as a set that features some great late work from trumpeter Johnny Coles! The first half of the record features the trio – a wonderfully warm group that includes Palle Danielsson on bass and Lenny White on drums – really stretching out on the titles "Feed The Fire" and "A Beautiful Friendship". Then, Johnny Coles joins the trio – and gets a great solo space on a version of "Old Folks" – before the larger group comes in, still with Coles up front in the lead on flugelhorn. Those large group titles include "Smooth Attitudes", "Some Aspects Of Water", and "Skin". CD

AmanazAfrica ... CD
Now Again, 1975. New Copy 2 CDs ... $7.99 17.98
Wonderfully fuzzy work from Amanaz – one of the trippiest, headiest groups of the Zamrock scene of the 70s! The guitars here are very full and present – not at a hit you over the head jamming label, but with this rich sonic element that has lots of bassy undercurrents – at a level that makes the album a head-nodding gem all the way through – poised perfectly between some of the more psyche styles of the African scene of the time, and some of the more thoughtful singer-songwriter material. The group have a quality that's surprisingly deep – very soulful, and with a subtle power that comes through strongly – thanks to a mostly-English batch of lyrics (although a few tunes here are in their native Bemba.) No cuts are all-out funky, but all have this great slow-funk sort of charm – and titles include "I Am Very Far", "Sunday Morning", "Khala My Friend", "Green Apple", "Africa", "Making The Scene", "Easy Street", "Big Enough" and "Kale". 2CD package features a full bonus "reverb mix" of the album – even trippier! What could have come out as clinical or academic comes through with passion and affection, partly because Amram could get such incredible players on the record, but mostly because the multi-instrumentalist ring leader is genuinely celebrating the music rather than simply replicating it. Anteloper (Jaimie Branch & Jason Nazary)Tour Beats Vol 1 ... LP
International Anthem, 2020. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
Mindblowing sounds from Anteloper – a great side project from trumpeter Jaimie Branch, and one that lets her open up with lots of the more electronic sides of her spirit! The set's a collaboration with Jason Nazary – who adds in acoustic drums plus a host of electronics and effects – echoed by Branch, who blows her usual strong lead on trumpet upfront, but also works electronic magic too – so that the duo are creating in the best mix of live instrumentation, processing, and editing that have made the International Anthem label such a powerhouse in new waves of jazz in recent years. The work's not unlike some of the recent projects of trumpeter Rob Mazurek – who, not surprisingly, provides notes on the record – which includes the tracks "Bubble Under", "Isotope 420", "Soledad Sabateur", and "Radar Radio". A very cool quartet with a very unusual sound – one that mixes up reeds, piano, and vibes with a very fresh approach – one that's partly west coast cool, and partly east coast modern! Key players in the group include Bryce Rhode on piano and Errol Buddle on bassoon – both musicians who'd make bigger waves in the 60s back home in Australian – and the set also features excellent vibes by John (Jack) Brokensha, who'd stay on these shores and make some groovy records for the US, and Dick Healy on flute. The group's joined by Jimmy Gannon on bass and Nick Stabulas on drums – and titles include "Saxophone Pads", "Tune For Jaimey", "Spring Is Here", "Nostalgia", and "Thou Swell". LP, Vinyl record album

Far Out (Brazil), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99 19.99
A record with an unusual source, but a sound that puts it right up there with some of the most heavenly rare Brazilian albums of the 70s – served up here in a folksy, jazzy mix of acoustic and electric elements – all with help from heavyweights who include Victor Assis Brasil, Mauricio Einhorn, Durval Ferreira, and the Azymuth trio! The songs are based around creations by a Brazilian comedy duo, but they hardly sound anything like that at all – as they're easy-going, mellow-grooving, and have these vocals that flow beautifully amidst percussion, guitar, and keyboards! There are two monologue tracks in Portuguese – both with audience laughter – but all other tracks are sung, and delivered with some wonderful arrangements by Jose Roberto Bertrami and Jose Menezes. Titles include "Negra Brecho", "Ao Billilico", "Tema Do Azambuja", "A Turma", "Verde", "Maristela", and "O Poste Da Rua Jorge De Lima". LP, Vinyl record album

Dare 2, 2016. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A really unusual group, with a sound that's certainly the sum of its wonderful parts – but also different in ways you might not expect! The lineup is excellent – the legendary Dave Holland on bass, Lionel Loueke on guitar, Chris Potter on tenor and soprano sax, and Eric Harland on drums – all working together in these very groovy styles that seem to have Holland pulling a lot more bold basslines than usual – almost as if he's using an electric version of the instrument, although it appears to just be an acoustic with a pickup! There's a soulful vibe to the record that you might not expect – shades of color and tone that are maybe closest to Loueke's music, but also very different than his own records – and Potter's really great in this setting, and blows with these open lines that are still as angular and sharp as usual, but maybe a bit warmer too. An incredible little record – and the set where it really all comes together for this legendary funky jazz group! Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the US scene – effortlessly blending their tight jazz skills with a dose of samba soul, and turning out some wonderfully groovy music in the process! There's clearly an influence here from the best years of Earth Wind & Fire – but also more of the edge that you'd expect from the young trio – as the amazing Jose Roberto Bertrami blows us away with his wickedly sharp keyboard solos, as Alexandre Malheiros and Mamao create these beautiful rhythms that go way past anything you might have expected from a trio. AzymuthDemos 1973 to 1975 ... CD
Far Out (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $14.99
Amazing early work from Azymuth – rare demo recordings done at the home studio of keyboardist Jose Roberto Bertrami, in the short space before the group issued their legendary debut! The tracks here are as much jazz funk as they are the later modes that Azymuth would put forth – killer instrumentals that are really driven by great keyboard lines from Bertrami, who'd already been making music in other formats for years – and who works here on Fender Rhodes, Arp, Clavinet, Hammond, and a range of other keyboards too! The drums are fantastic, too – handled by a young Ivan Conti, who gets help on percussion from an early fourth member of the group, Ariovaldo Contesini – and as you might guess, the incredible basslines of Ivan Mamao Conti really help the whole thing groove. All material is very well-recorded – these aren't rough or unfinished tracks at all – and the whole thing should just be thought of as a first chapter for the group, right before they started putting out their famous records. Titles include "Prefacio", "Castelo", "Melo Do Cuica", "Xingo", "Laranjeiras", "Eqiupe 68", "Unknown Song For Mario Telles", "Manha", "Duro De Roer", "Quem Tem Medo", "Juntos Mais Uma Vez", and "Bateria Do Mamao". Two rare early tracks from Azymuth – both mighty nice! "As Curvas Da Estrada De Santos" is an instrumental take on a tune by the brothers Robert and Erasmo Carlos – but done as a slow-stepping funky instrumental, with loads of great organ work from Jose Roberto Bertrami! The flipside is a tune with more great keyboards from Bertrami – a duet with Josoa Americo Parana on guitar, but with this cool moody wordless vocal that drifts nicely through the cut and gives the whole thing a nicely spooky feel – almost a Brazilian "Rosemary's Baby" theme! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Milestone/Far Out (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $10.99 16.99
One of Azymuth's best-remembered albums from their American years on Milestone – a really killer classic that beautifully blends Brazilian and American styles of fusion! There's a simple, elegant feel to these tunes that takes off nicely from the group's previous album for Atlantic in Brazil – a pushing forward of the soulful sides of their style, but with just the right blend of quirkier elements as well – one that still keeps the edge of the early years, yet helps the group reach out with a wonderfully warm sound! Most tracks are quite spare, and without any too-smooth polishing in production – and titles include the classic "Jazz Carnival", a funky fusion classic if there ever was one – plus "Light As A Feather", "Avenida Das Manguerias", "This Exists", "Partido Alto", "Dona Olimpia", "Amazonia", and "Young Embrace". CD also features four bonus tracks – "Jazz Carnival (full original mix)", "Avenida Das Manguerias (SS translation by Theo Parrish)", "Jazz Carnival (Yambee rework by Ashley Beedle & Yam Who)", and "Codsall Juniors" by Mark E. CD

Pretty groovy tracks recorded by this enigmatic jazz guitarist in France during the early 60s. Baroque Jazz TrioBaroque Jazz Trio (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Saravah/Souffle Continu (France), 1970. New Copy ... $13.99
Beautiful stuff – and one of the most stunning jazz albums ever recorded – a blinding mix of harpsichord, cello, and Indian percussion – with a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of! The album was the brainchild of the cross-culturally fertile Saravah records at the end of the 60s – home to experimental work by Brigitte Fontaine, Barney Wilen, The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, and others. From the start, the group wanted to work in a boundary-less territory that really pushed the limits of jazz – drawing in inspiration from world music, and working in a style they called "baroque", to emphasize the bizarreness of their project. Given the heavy use of tabla on the set, the album's got a really driving rhythmic component – making for some funky numbers that have been sought-after jazz-dance tracks for years. And the role of the harpsichord is surprisingly strong – played in almost modal lines, but with a hesitating, lilting groove that's quite different to similar use of the piano at the time. Titles include "Delhi Daily", "Chandigardh", "Latin Baroque", "Zoma", and "Cesar Go Back Home". CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Largo" and "Orientasie". CD

Very groovy vocal jazz from Poland – very much in the style of the best work by the Novi Singers! The group's led by the lovely Ewa Bem, but features harmonizing male voices behind her on many titles – set alongside lightly electric instrumentation that has lots of sweet breezy touches! There's a very playful feel to the tunes that's clearly inspired by the bossa vocals of Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 – but which also has some great electric Polish jazz 70s touches as well. Includes the great funky track "Kolorwe Lato", plus the tracks "Jajecznica", "Zawsze Mamy Siebie", "Podaruj Mi Troche Slonca", and "Nie Bojmy Sie Wiosny". CD

Lovely work from Maria Bethania – a set that's often quite spare and understated, with less of the drama than her classic years – but in really great way! Maria's got a warmth here that we really like – not that too-smooth style that some older Brazilian artists get in a commercial setting – but almost a more back-to-basics approach – earthier than Bethania ever was at her start. Arrangements are by Jaime Alem, Cristovao Bastos, and Mauricio Carrilho – and instrumentation is usually handled by a small group, which keeps things lean, and almost adds a folkloric touch behind the vocals. Titles include "Encantaria", "Coroa Do Mar", "Feita Na Bahia", "Sete Trovas", "E Senhora/Batatinha Roxa", "Estrela", and "Minha Rede". CD

We love this group – and with each new record, they give us reason to love them even more – and realize that their totality is even greater than the sum of their many all-star parts! The lineup alone is enough – Wayne Escoffery on tenor, Jeremy Pelt on trombone, James Burton III on trombone, Victor Gould on piano, Rashaan Carter on bass, and Mark Whitfield on drums – but together, they sound even more amazing – kind of crackling and bristling with energy, as if the players are keenly engaged in each other's company – not in a competitive way, but with a collaborative energy that even tops most other groups comprised of leaders in a single combo! Soaring colors are balanced by beautiful depths – and titles include "Iron Man", "For The Kids", "No Words Needed", "Twin Towers", "Involuntary Servitude", "Mr Willis", and "Ascension". CD

During the late 50s – after an initial burst of recordings with Blue Note, and before a later successful run for the label – Art Blakey recorded on a number of labels with a lesser-known version of The Jazz Messengers. This album's from that stretch – and like others from the period it's a darn nice batch of tracks, and while it lacks some of the polished tightness of the later Blue Notes it crackles with the energy that's been the Jazz Messengers trademark from day one. The group features Bill Hardman on trumpet, Jackie McLean on alto, and Sam Dockery on piano – and the set's a loose batch of hardbop numbers like "Casino", "Ugh!", "Mirage", "The Biddie Griddies", "Potpourri" and "Reflections Of Buhania". A classic early set featuring the Jazz Messengers back when the group still included Horace Silver, Hank Mobley, and Kenny Dorham – one of the earliest and purest versions of Blakey's hardbop vision, touched with the slightly exotic lyricism of Silver, which gives the tracks a wonderful edge. The playing is excellent throughout – and the album's the kind of live stormer that shows why the group were such a huge draw right out of the box, and why they performed as well (if not better) in a live setting than they did ain a studio one! A nice collection of overlooked work from Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers – not the oft-reissued material from the group's years at Blue Note, but instead some slightly more obscure sides recorded for Columbia and RCA! The work here also represents a time when Blakey was experimenting a bit more with the group – a stretch right before he settled into some of the more-recorded groups with Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, and Bobby Timmons – but still had a great ear for important younger talent! Players here include Bill Hardman, Donald Byrd, and Lee Morgan on trumpets; Jackie McLean on alto; Johnny Griffin, Hank Mobley, and Benny Golson on tenor; and Horace Silver and Sam Dockery on piano! The set includes material from the albums Hard Bop, Drum Suite, Jazz Messengers, Night In Tunisia, and some of the French-only live recordings that Blakey did for RCA in the late 50s – and the set features 16 tracks that include "Nica's Dream", "Evidence", "Blues March For Europe No 1", "Along Came Manon", "Lester Left Town", "Night In Tunisia (live)", "Moanin With Hazel", "Night In Tunisia (take 3)", "Ecaroh", "Cubano Chant", "Almost Like Being In Love", "The Sacrifie", and "Couldn't It Be You (take 4)". A great Art Blakey lineup here, as usual – filled with fire from younger musicians who are really finding their voice in the Jazz Messengers – a group that includes Terence Blanchard on trumpet, Donald Harrison on alto, Jean Toussaint on tenor, and Mulgrew Miller on piano! Miller's work is a great match for Blakey's vibe – a bit like that time when Cedar Walton brought both lyricism and swing to the Messengers – and we love Toussaint at this point in his career, as he plays with this raspy tone that always gets us, and holds onto us long after his solos are done! Blanchard and Harrison are as great as you'd expect – and titles include "Blue Night", "Two Of A Kind", "Blue Minor", and "Mr Combinated". CD

An amazing album that has Art Blakey completely reinventing himself for the 70s! Blakey shifts from straight hardbop to kind of a modal soul jazz groove, touched with some of the electric playing of the younger jazz generation, but not enough to qualify as fusion or funk. Instead, he's working with some great younger players – like Carter Jefferson, Woody Shaw, and Michael Howell – hitting a groove that reminds us of some of the best underground soul jazz on labels like Muse or Strata East. Includes the amazing long groovers "Mission Eternal" and "Chant For Bu", a famous Tribe Called Quest sample – plus new electric piano versions of "Moanin" and "Along Came Betty", both of which feature vocals by Jon Hendricks. Art Blakey/Modern Jazz QuartetArt Blakey's Jazz Messengers With Thelonious Monk/Blues At Carnegie Hall ... CD
Collectables, 1958/1967. Used ... $6.99
An unlikely pairing of albums, but another nice 2-fer of classic Atlantic sides. The Jazz Messengers album is a great one – and features the firey hardbop of Blakey's late 50's Messengers (with Johnny Griffin and Bill Hardman) meeting the modernist piano playing of Monk, who was really hitting his stride at this point on his own Riverside recordings. The session's an interesting one, and if it lacks the groove of the usual Blakey album, Monk more than makes up for any lack of soulfulness by throwing in some nice complicated piano lines. We still prefer Bobby Timmons to Monk with Blakey – but the album's worth having, and includes nice Monk tracks like "Evidence", "Blue Monk", "I Mean You", and "Purple Shades". The MJQ session's a live one, and features the usual tightly arranged chamber jazz approach. Tracks on that one include "Bag's Groove", "Blues Milanese", "Pyramid", and "The Cylinder". CD

We really love the writing of Federico Bonifazi – as he often has a way of making a tune sound a lot richer than the sum of its parts – which is definitely the case here in a quartet lineup that includes Bonifazi on piano, Tolga Bilgin on trumpet, Furio DiCastri on bass, and Roberto Batto on drums! Federico plays in that richness of sound that first seemed to flow from the Italian scene as the 70s moved into the 80s – a mode that learned all the lessons of modern jazz, but used them to increase a sense of humanity and color in the music – which is definitely the case here – as each tune seems to bubble over with new energy and life. A sweet mix of Brazilian grooves and New York attitude – an overlooked session from the end of the 90s – recorded in the US by Brazilian saxman Leo Gandelman, with soulful help from a variety of American players – including Reuben Wilson on organ and both Charlie Hunter and Grant Green Jr on guitar! There's a rich sort of 70s vibe to the record – a tight, funky blend of jazzy riffing and Brazilian percussion, all put together at a level that almost reminds us of Kudu Records at its best – lean, soulful, and surprisingly focused throughout – a great step forward for Gandelman, and for percussionist Juliano Zanoni, who co-arranged the set with Leo, and also wrote most of the tunes. Supposedly, the record never saw the light of day when it was recorded – making this sweet Far Out package its first-ever release! A sweet set of contemporary bossa gems – all older numbers made famous by Joao Gilberto in his early days – spun out with a very fresh finish here by the Brazilian Love Affair combo! The group work in a mostly live jazz mode, with just a bit of programming on the rhythms – and the album's especially heavy on Fender Rhodes, which updates an older bossa sound nicely – amidst older-styled instrumentation on acoustic guitar, Hammond, trombone, and flute. The vocals are great – with the same raspy charm of Joao's early recordings – that very human, very honest quality that made his singing so different from other vocalists of his generation – and titles include "Rosa Morena", "Desafinado", "Voce E Eu", "O Barquinho", "Saudade Fez Um Samba", "Ho Ba La La", and "Chega De Saudade". Bruno E sounds fantastic here, and very different than the broken beat maestro we loved on his records from the early part of this century – as Bruno's moved into a much warmer jazz-based environment, and plays acoustic bass here with a very hip little combo! Most of the tracks are instrumental, and the group has trumpet, tenor, and trombone – all used with the rhythms in a way that's rooted in soul jazz, but which moves to sparkle with some of the more contemporary tones of club jazz groups from the Italian, Japanese, and Scandinavian scene – although the focus here isn't entirely on grooves, but on the richer feel of the music. Bruno also sings on a few cuts too – in English, which is great – with these mature, poetic lyrics that are unlike anything else he's ever given us – just one more great aspect of this really wonderful record! Robinsongs (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3 CDs ... $24.99
An amazing tribute to some of the greatest jazz funk of the 70s – the groundbreaking work of trumpeter Donald Byrd, both as a solo act on his own, and as the inspiration for the mighty Blackbyrds group – both of whom are featured on this set! Byrd first broke into new territory in the early 70s with a string of amazing records on Blue Note – all done with help from genius producer Larry Mizell, who helped Byrd's trumpet find a way to groove in an electric space, but at a level that was very different (and a lot more soulful) than any sort of Miles Davis electric modes! This work quickly inspired a young group at Howard University, who chose the name Blackbyrds as a nod to Donald – who quickly became their mentor and producer, and helped them forge a great blend of jazz and funk before they took off on their own. This set features 39 tracks from both artists, illustrating a fantastic partnership and shared musical inspiration – with work from Byrd's Blue Note and Wea albums, and all the great Blackbyrds records for Fantasy in the 70s. Titles include Donald Byrd tracks "Dominoes", "Black Byrd", "Lansana's Priestess", "Wind Parade", "Flying High", "Thank You For Funking Up My Life", "Onward Til Morning", "Dance Band", "Science Funktion", "Dominoes", "Flight Time", "Witch Hunt", "Stepping Into Tomorrow", "Sexy Dancer (12" mix)", "Star Trippin (12" mix)", "Pretty Baby", "Giving It Up", and "Dancing In The Street". Aaltonen/Kullhammar/Heikinheimo/Meaas SvendsenFather, Sons, & The Junnu ... CD
Moserobie (Sweden), 2020. New Copy ... $18.99
We're not sure who the Junnu is here – but the legendary reedman Juhani Aaltonen is definitely the follower, supported here with work by three younger musicians who might qualify as his musical sons! Aaltonen is amazing – every bit as compelling as on his famous Finnish sides of the 70s – blowing tenor and flute, and matched in spirit and soul by the great Jonas Kullhammar – who's also on tenor, and some baritone – really matching Juhani's approach, and reminding us once again that Kullhammar is not only one of the greatest saxophonists of his generation, he's also one of the most generous, and able to shift into the modes of his collaborators. The rest of the quartet features Christian Meaas Svensen on bass and Ilmarki Heikinheimo on drums and percussion – and the whole thing might be one of the most beautiful, soul-drenched records we've ever heard on the Moserobie label. Titles include "Sorrow Wave", "Refletions", "Il Ju Jo Christ", "The Sun", and "Kiirohige". CD

Aaly/DKV Double TrioDouble Or Nothing ... CD
Okka Disk, 2002. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
Two important improvising trios come together head to head in the transatlantic brilliance of Okka Disk Records in the 90s – recorded in a very unusual way that lets you clearly hear all the contributions of the members of the group! In the left channel stands AALY – a searing lineup of Mats Gustafsson on alto and tenor, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass, and Kjell Nordeson on drums – and in the right channel stands DKV, with Ken Vandermark on tenor and bass clarinet, Kent Kessler on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums – a mighty meeting of musicians who are really at the top of their improvising game! Rather than come on head-to-head, it's amazing to hear the way that these well-matched trios open up to each other – especially the bassists and drummers, who are maybe less familiar in this setting than Vandermark and Gustafsson, who were an instantly amazing musical pair. The set begins with the original "Left To Right", then the group makes real magic over the course of 51 minutes, in a piece that offers variations on Albert Ayler's "Angels" and Don Cherry's "Awake Nu". Joshua AbramsCloud Script ... CD
Rogue Art (France), 2020. New Copy ... About January 15, 2021 (delayed)
Tremendous work from Joshua Abrams – a set that's very different than some of his other work in recent years, but every bit as great! The set's got a lean group – Abrams on bass, Jeff Parker on guitar, Gerald Cleaver on drums, and the great Ari Brown on tenor – of Awakening fame – a group that delivers a more stripped-down version of some of Josh's more spiritual ideals – but in ways that also touch base with more conventional jazz expression! Make no mistake, there's nothing conventional about this set – the approach is very unique, and very striking – and the presence of the younger musicians really sets Ari Brown on fire, and reminds us of what a great soloist he can be when he's pushed to his limits. Titles include "Collapsing Novelty", "Duke Hill", "Echo Tracer", "In Place Of Memory", and "Coniunctio". CD

Joshua AbramsNatural Information ... LP
Eremite/Aguirre (Belgium), 2010. New Copy ... About February 18, 2021
Some of the most meditative, spiritual sounds we've ever heard from the great Josh Abrams – a record that goes way past his more familiar work on bass – even though that's pretty darn great! For this set, Abrams reaches out to a host of different instruments – including the harmonium, dulcimer, and guimbiri – as well as additional percussion, and acoustic bass as well – all instruments he uses in this really rich, textured way – layring the organic sounds with contributions from Jason Adasiewicz on vibes, Emmett Kelly on guitar, and Frank Rosaly on drums. The record also features a few more really compelling instruments – a bit of Arp from Jim Baker, harmonium from Lisa Alvarado, and autoharp from Ben Boye – instruments that come in towards the end of the record, to make things even more hypnotic and mesmerizing. Titles include "Dolphin Cave Dazzling", "Mysterious Delirious Fluke Of The Beyond", "Abide In Sunset", "A Lucky Stone", and "Soul Talisman". LP, Vinyl record album

Joshua AbramsRepresencing ... LP
Eremite/Aguirre (Belgium), 2012. New Copy (reissue)... About February 18, 2021
Brilliant work from composer/arranger/creator Joshua Abrams – one of the most creative figures to come out of the Chicago scene in the past couple decades – no hyperbole necessary! On Represencing Josh is largely working with the guimbri – the North African traditional string instrument – plus a bit of organ, harps, and bells – used sparely alongside the core instrument. The guimbri gives the record an earthy, traditional base – as Abrams reaches out to inspire a lager ensemble that includes Chad Taylor on drums and gong, Nicole Mitchell on flute, Michael Zerang on tambourine, Jeff Parker and Emmett Kelly on guitars, Tomeka Reid on cello, David Boykin on tenor sax, and Jason Stein on bass clarinet – all familiar players, with whom Abrams has worked often – coming together here with a very spiritual vibe. Titles include "San Anto", "Represencing", "Moon Hunger", "Sound Talisman", "Sungazer", "The BA", "Enter Mountain Amulet", and "Cloud Walking". LP, Vinyl record album

Joshua Abrams & Natural Information SocietyMandatory Reality ... CD
Eremite, 2019. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99
A really fantastic album from bassist Joshua Abrams – a set that may well be his greatest to date – and that's saying a lot, given all the other work he's given us in recent years! The double-length set has Abrams working with this lineup of improvising jazz talents, but in a way that's very rhythmic, and very organic – slow-building songs that almost seem to mix jazz with inspiration from gamelan music, but with very spiritual currents overall – music that builds slowly and flows to the cosmos – almost in a way that reminds us of the seminal "On The Beach" by Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble! Yet Abrams is very much in his own territory here – working with a lineup that features the leader on guimbri, Lisa Alvarado on harmonium and gongs, Mikel Avery on tam-tam and gongs, Ben Boye on electric autoharp and piano, Hamid Drake on tabla and tar, Ben Lamar Gay on cornet, Nick Mazzarella on alto saxophone, and Jason Stein on bass clarinet – with every member of the ensemble also performing on flutes. The sound is incredible – music to build a bridge to the heavens – and titles include "In Memory's Prism", "Finite", "Shadow Conductor", and "Agree". CD

Buddy Ace & Al TNT BraggsBuddy Ace Meets Al TNT Braggs ... CD
Duke/Jasmine (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A double-header of a set – one that brings together rare work from two great 50s singers on the Duke/Peacock label – both of whom get a fair bit of space in the collection! Buddy Ace was actually named James Land at the start, but was dubbed Buddy Ace after the death of Johnny Ace – one of the first big Duke records stars, and a key force in the early years of rock and roll. Buddy's style is maybe a bit warmer at times than Johnny, but he also gets all the fantastic Duke Records production that made Bobby Blue Bland so great at the start – core blues augmented with larger arrangements, and jazz currents that can make the music a lot more sophisticated than on other labels! There's definitely plenty of blues in the mix, including strong guitar leads on some tunes – and titles include "Screaming Please", "This Little Love Of Mine", "From These Roots", "It Can't Be True", What Can I Do", "Back Home", and "Won't You Reconsider". The set then moves onto a great batch of work from Al TNT Braggs – a singer who definitely earns the explosive part of his name – especially on the upbeat numbers that are equal parts R&B and early rock and roll! Al's got a very distinct, dexterous approach to the music – one that's also really pointing the way towards 60s soul – on titles that include "Chase Em Tom Cat", "A Little Bit Closer", "We Belong Together", "Easy Rock", "You're Something Else", and "Cigarettes & Coffee". ✨✧ Idris Ackamoor & The PyramidsAngel Fell ... LP
Strut (UK), 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 28.99
Saxophonist Idris Ackamoor is a living jazz legend – but not the kind that's stale and stuffy, and instead a continuously vibrant player who's given us mindblowing music since his initial recordings with his Pyramids group in the 70s! This version of the Pyramids is different than that one, but they represent a continuing evolution of Ackamoor's rich spirit – his way of fusing spiritual jazz currents with global rhythmic inspirations – but all without every sounding as hokey as so many others who try for that space, and just fall flat! There's a sense of power and inspiration to Ackamoor's music that still moves us tremendously – and which, today, seems more urgent than ever – especially as Idris has seemed to set a new fire under his talents in the past decade or so, obviously more motivated by the need for social change than in his projects of more recent decades. The album's a mix of vocals and instrumentals – but the vocals are often more chant-like, or handled by the ensemble – at a level that further deepens the spirit of the sound. Titles include "Land Of Ra", "Papyrus", "Soliloquy For Michael Brown", "Message To My People", "An Angel Fell", "Tinoge", and "Warrior Dance". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Arthur AdamsI Love Love Love Love Love Love Love My Lady ... LP
A&M, 1979. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Art's sure making sure his lady gets her due on this one! But apart from an unweildy title, the album's a great set of smooth mellow soul numbers – very much in the vein you'd expect from having "love" repeated so many times in the title. Backing is tighter than on Arthur's earlier albums – and the record's got lots of nice jazzy touches in a California fusion soul kind of way. Titles include "You Give Me Such A Good Feelin", "I Like It Funky", "It's Just A Groove", "Sugar Cane", "Special Kinda Lady", "Cruisin", "Never Get Enough Of Your Love", and "Let's Dance". George Adams, Martin Hannibal Peterson & FriendsMore Sightings ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1984. New Copy ... $16.99
An unusual date from tenorist George Adams – recorded right around the same time as his legendary records with Don Pullen, but instead a more unusual partnership with the great trumpeter Hannibal Marvin Peterson! The pairing is great – and both hornmen soar out and really get plenty of room to do their thing – in a mixture of hardbop energy and more spiritual currents, with help from John Scofield on guitar, Ron Burton on piano, Walter Schmocker on bass, and Allen Nelson on drums. The energy is maybe a bit more like some of Peterson's late 70s records than some of the Adams/Pullen material – and that quality makes the live date a nice standout in the catalog of both players. Titles include "Soul Brothers", "Do We Know Where We Are Going", "Melanie", "More Sightings", and "Don't Take Your Love From Me". CD

George Adams/Don PullenDon't Lose Control ... LP
Soul Note (Italy), 1979. Very Good+ ... $11.99
A trashy cover, but a great little record – one that's filled with wonderfully sensitive sounds from the team of George Adams and Don Pullen – working here in some really relaxed, soulful territory! The album's got a laidback feel that's a nice change from some of the more cerebral modes of both players – almost a bit more spontaneous than some of their other recordings together, with a different sort of spirit on each track, and a style that slides easily between different modes of jazz. Adams plays tenor and flute, and sings on one track – Pullen's on acoustic piano, and other players include Cameron Brown on bass and Dannie Richmond on drums. Titles include "Double Arc Jake", "Autumn Song", "Don't Lose Control", "Remember", and "Places & Faces". LP, Vinyl record album

George Adams/Don Pullen QuartetLive At Montmartre ... CD
Timeless/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1985. New Copy ... $13.99
Solidly soaring work from tenorist George Adams – recording live here with pianist Don Pullen, one of his best musical partners during the 80s! The album's got a bit more of a bite than some of the pair's studio sessions – a bit straighter overall, but recorded with a nice degree of energy, and some long tracks that really let both players open up nicely – in a combo that also features John Scofield on guitar, Cameron Brown on bass, and Dannie Richmond on drums. The inclusion of Scofield's guitar changes up the group's sound in a nice way – adding in some more chromatic elements that really stand out – and titles include "IJ", "Flame Games", "Song Everlasting", and "Forever Lovers".
