Soulful sounds from Black Pumas – a collaboration between singer Eric Burton and the great Adrian Quesada – the latter an instrumentalist and producer that you'll know from a variety of different funky projects over the years! This set might well be Adrian's ticket to the big time – as Burton's a singer with a very strong range, and great crossover potential – echoing Al Green one minute, hitting deeper vibes the next – and working alongside small combo backing that has plenty of laidback guitar lines and warm keyboards, all produced with the usual Quesada touch! Titles include "Oct 33", "Fire", "Colors", "Know You Better", "Stay Gold", "Old Man", "Confines", and "Touch The Sky". CD

International Anthem, 2015. New Copy ... $5.99 11.99
Mighty nice work from a really inventive duo – the team of Ryan Oslance on drums and Shane Parish on guitar – both musicians who work with a criss-crossing sound that's part jazz, flavored maybe partly by rock – in a blend that really continues the legacy of some important Chicago sounds of the final years of the 20th Century! There's a wide array of textures from the guitar – sometimes more pronounced leads, sometimes subtle sonic energy, and sometimes rhythmic blasts that really echo the work on drums – which also has a way of stepping between conventional and more unusual modes, as both musicians progress in styles that often have a relatively rhythmic core. Titles include "Power With", "Erosion", "Sundowning", "Rincon Pio Sound", "La Faena", and "Shelter In Place" – a tune that maybe resonates more differently now than when it was recorded! CD

Atomic ForestDisco Roar ... LP
Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 25.98
A really wild album from this Indian psych group of the 70s – a set that's a bit different than their better-known first and second albums, but which is pretty darn groovy overall! The set's definitely somewhere in the "disco" of the title – but not in a slick, commercial way – as the group are working mostly as a funky instrumental combo, with some weird keyboard touches and offbeat production that might be aimed at the dancefloor, but which would have sent folks running for the doors in an American club. Singers appear in a few spots, but the real appeal is the tight, fast, and super-funky instrumentation – honestly even funkier than on their previous albums, which really transforms any tune they try to touch. Titles include "Another Star", "2001", "Life is Anew", "Devil Woman", "I Wish", "Spectrum", and "Smackwater Jack". LP, Vinyl record album

Atomic ForestObsession ... CD
Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $9.99 19.98
The collected work of a mighty trippy group from the Indian scene – a psychedelic combo who worked in the 70s, but who had the same sort of edge you'd hear from the American and British scenes of the late 60s! In truth, there's a fair bit of Anglo influence going on in the music – not just in the English language lyrics, but also in the way the guitars come together with stretched-out, soaring brilliance – flying eight miles high to the sky in a heady brew of freak and fuzz – and turning this approach to some surprising soundtrack numbers too! Production is perfect for the band's vibe – often spacing things out in a really cool way – with some slightly primitive modes that also remind us of the South American psych scene of a few years before. Now Again did a brilliant job with the package – bringing together a host of the group's best tracks from the mid 70s, and a bonus 20 page booklet with full notes on the group, and some very cool photos and ephemera. The whole thing even features a few unreleased numbers – and titles include "Obsession 77", "Sunshine Day", "Butterfly Version 1", "Theme From The Godfather", "Theme From The Fox", "Windmills Of Your Mind", "Booboo Lullaby", "Man You're Not Number One", "Travel On", "Gesthemene", and "Foxy Lady". Chet BakerChet Baker In Europe – A Jazz Tour Of The Nato Countries ... LP
Pacific Jazz, 1956. Very Good- ... $79.99
One of the best-ever Chet Baker albums! The material is divided up into two sides – one featuring some of the last-ever work by pianist Richard Twardziak, one of Baker's best-ever accompanists, playing here in a tight little quartet with the great Jimmy Bond on bass and Peter Littman on drums. Bond returns on the second side, which features piano work by Gerard Gustin and drums by Bert Dahlander. Either side is excellent, though – and the record features some of the best no-nonsense blowing ever by Baker. Way more soulful than some of his other work, with a sound that moves past the early west coast years in a perfect way! Titles include "Rondette", "Piece Caprice", "Sad Walk", "Pomp", and "Summertime". Beautiful cover, too! LP, Vinyl record album

Gato BarbieriChapter Four – Alive In New York ... CD
Impulse, 1975. Used ... $14.99
Searing live work from Gato Barbieri – a brilliant little album that follows on the spirit of his other Latin America sessions for Impulse! The format here is similar to those studio outings – an organic blend of percussion, keyboards, and sax – all bubbling together in a highly rhythmic mode that easily shifts between electric and acoustic statements, all in a jazz-based pursuit of older Latin American rhythms and expressions! Eddie Martinez plays some great Fender Rhodes on the album – ringing out with warm tones that are strongly offset by Gato's sharp-edge tenor lines – and all tracks are nice and long, and flow with a sense of creative energy that almost surpasses the studio albums in the series! Titles include "Milonga Triste", "La China Leoncia", "Baihia", and "Lluvia Azul". CD

Chapter 2 of Gato's Latin American trilogy – and like the first, a set of tracks that features Gato's firey sax work engaging a complex series of Latin rhythms. Some of the tracks on the record feature Brazilian influences – from players like Helio Delmiro and Novelli – and one other track was recorded in Buenos Aires, like the tunes on the first LP. The sound is soulful and spiritual throughout – and the presence of the additional players really opens up Gato's style. Titles include "Para Nosotros", "Encontros", "Latino America", and "Marissea". Gato BarbieriLast Tango In Paris (180 gram pressing) ... LP
AMS (Italy), 1972. New Copy ... On June 5, 2020
One of the greatest moments ever from saxophonist Gato Barbieri – and that's saying a lot, given that by the time of this recording, he'd already had a great 60s run as an avant jazz musician, and started the 70s with a string of albums that criss-crossed jazz and South American musical styles! Yet Last Tango In Paris may well be Barbieri's crowning achievement – a sublime record that draws on all the richer, more emotive themes of his Latin America projects, but gives them new focus in the arrangements of Oliver Nelson – who ensures that the music is never too cheesy or overdone – quite a feat, given the sexy setting of the film! Gato draws a lot from Argentine tango, but often uses his own sax solos in place of a more familiar bandoneon – in a way that pushes the "new tango" mode of the time even farther – especially when set amidst Nelson's wonderful orchestrations. Titles include many versions of the "Last Tango" theme, plus the tracks "Girl In Black", "Jeanne", "Why Did She Choose You?", "It's Over", and "Fake Ophelia". LP, Vinyl record album

Sato's driving style on the keys really sets the pace for the session, and pushes Berger's vibes into very similar territory – all supported nicely by Allen Blairman on drums and Adelhard Roidinger on bass. Big Band KatowiceMusic For My Friends ... LP
Polskie Nagrania (Poland), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
Funky big band from Poland – a very groovy set that's right up there with the best large group 70s sessions on MPS! The group here is very heavy on the horns – lots of trumpets and saxes – underscored by some hipper rhythms that include a bit of guitar, electric bass, and keyboards – never too much to make the record an electric one, but enough to push an older jazz mode into some groovier territory for the 70s! There's a tight stepping feel to the best numbers, and a soaring, spacious sensibility to the rest – almost a soundtrack sort of approach, given the deep colors and tones in the set. The album features a great funky remake of "Madrox", with a nice cop show break at the start, plus the funky numbers "Hey Man", "Sorcery", and "Music For My Friends". LP, Vinyl record album

A set of rare tracks from the vaults of CBS Records in Kenya – tunes that really show a nicely complex approach to the groove! Black Fire kick things off with "Fire" – a tune that's got a reggae vibe, but a sound that's quite different than the style of Kingston! The cut's followed by "Got The Feelin" by S&D Majek, which bounces and bubbles along with a bassline that might have made Cymande proud – but with a very different vibe overall! Ovid handles the two tracks on the flipside – "Operator", which is more in the Kenyan reggae mode – and "Karibun", which has more of an upbeat clubby groove! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Nice work from Louis Cato – a singer with a style that warmly crackles along with his grooves – partly in a soul-based mode, but with more of the depth of the singer/songwriter world – as Louis is clearly an artist who doesn't care which genre he appeals to the most! That's not to say that Cato is very way-out, just very personal – in a wonderfully special head space that comes through both in the way he phrases his lyrics, and puts together the instrumental core of the tunes – which often have his own guitar alongside shifting percussion, bass, and other elements – almost all of which are handled by the singer himself. Bobby CharlesAlligators, Sprockets, & Bended Knees ... CD
Jasmine (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99 16.99
A huge collection of work from the great Bobby Charles – a sometimes-overlooked figure in late 50s music, but a key force in developing the sound of Louisiana at the time! Bobby hailed from the cajun part of the state, but also drank heavily from the R&B that was brewing up in New Orleans – and the records within are part of a fantastic genre-crossing legacy that's always gotten Charles equal interest from fans of older rock and soul! The package is very heavy on key material that Bobby recorded for Chess Records, including a number of tracks that were not issued at the time – and the set also features some later singles for Imperial, which continue the kind of Crescent City soulfulness that Bobby really helped forge with a few key contemporaries as the start of a much bigger legacy to come. The set features 48 tracks in all – with titles that include "Oh Yeah", "Since She's Gone", "Watch It Sprocket", "I'm A Fool To Care", "Mr Moon", "Ain't Got No Home", "Laura Lee", "Take It Easy Greasy", "One Eyed Jack", "No More", "You Can Suit Yourself", "On Bended Knee", "Hey Good Lookin", "Why Did You Leave", "Your Picture", "Good Lovin", "Those Eyes", and "What A Party". Also includes a few bonus tracks that show Bobby's influence on other artists – tracks by Fats Domino, Clarence Henry, John Fred, and Bill Haley. CD

Michael Cosmic/Phill Musra GroupPeace In The World/Creator Spaces (with bonus download) ... LP
Cosmic/Now Again, 1974. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $44.99 55.98
An amazing package – a pair of rare avant jazz albums, presented here together! The first album is Peace In The World – maybe the only album issued under the name of Michael Cosmic – but a set that's part of a key legacy with his brother, reedman Phill Musra! The set has Cosmic in very heady territory – sounds that come from his young tenure in the AACM, his brief time with Cecil Taylor, and his budding reputation on the 70s Boston scene – where the set was recorded, and almost stands as a precursor to the rich legacy of improvisational jazz that would emerge on the New England scene for decades to come! Tracks are long and very free, but have spiritual currents too – and Cosmic is mostly on piano, with Musra on soprano sax and tenor, Leonard Brown on soprano and tenor, John Jamyll Jones on bass, Huseyin Ertunc on drums, and Eric Jackson on percussion. Titles include "We Love You Malcolm X", "Peace In The World", "Sapce On Space", and "Arabia". Next is the related album Creator Spaces, by Phill Musra – recorded at the time when he was part of the very underground Boston avant scene – a world that had a slightly different vibe than music coming from Chicago, Detroit, or New York! The album's got a spiritual avant bent – soulful at the core, with lots of references to outer space as well – and an approach that feels a lot like a classic Saturn Records session by Sun Ra, both in sound and spirit! Musra plays reeds, chimes, and percussion – and the group features some incredible sax work by Michael Cosmic, who also plays a bit of organ, again in a tripped-out, Ra-type way. Huseyin Ertunc plays percussion – very free and loose, in ways that are a great balance to the more angular lines of the reeds – and tracks include "The Creator Is So Far Out", "The Creator Spaces", "Egypt", and "Arabia". ✨✧ Gal CostaEstratosferica ... CD
Sony (Brazil), 2015. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Gal Costa looks surpisingly youthful on the cover – and she's also sounding more youthful in her music than we've heard in many years – thanks to a key collaboration with Kassin and Moreno Veloso! Both of the younger musicians really find a fresh space for Gal to work with – a nice shift away from some of the more staid, mature modes of her other recent records – and a style that brings out all the creativity that made us fall in love with Costa so many years ago! This shift isn't a return to Tropicalia, but instead a move towards that playful, genre-stepping territory that you'll find in both Veloso and Kassin's music, especially the latter. One of Costa's best in years – and with titles that include "Amor Se Aclame", "Anuviar", "Espelho D'Agua", "Ecstasy", "Jabitaca", and "Sem Medo Nem Esperanca". CD

Polskie Nagrania/GAD (Poland), 1968. New Copy ... $16.99
A totally groovy little group from late 60s Poland – one who work here in a "beat mass" of their own creation – a totally rocking album that seeks to remake the Catholic mass in a flurry of fast drums, riffing guitars, and mod keyboards! The territory is nothing new – the Electric Prunes, David Axelrod, Mind Garage, and other acts tried the same thing over in the US – but this one's maybe a bit different, as it's coming more from a beat group sound – so has less of the too-heady energy of some of the rest, and instead explodes with a vibe that's more mod 60s London than you might be expecting! The organ gets in plenty of great moments, and the drums keep things moving strongly – on titles that include "Kyrie", "Gloria", "Graduale", "Credo", "Agnus Dei", "Sanctus", "Communio", and "Introitus" – plus Pastoralki selections "Historia O Boznymn Narodzeniu", "Przjaciele Moi", and "Chwalcie Imie Pana". One of the most playful albums we've ever heard from Hamilton De Holanda – a set that features the master instrumentalist on 10 string bandolim, in front of some larger orchestrations – but on tunes that are pulled from a variety of pop culture sources, including some surprising entries from cartoons and video games! Hamilton's command of his instrument is still fantastic – beautifully expressive, and always doing a heck of a lot with just a little – and the larger orchestrations are thoughtfully handled by Leandro Carvalho, in a way that never dims the presence of the lead instrument, but instead inflects its sound with just the right sense of color and space. Titles include "Sitio Do Pica Pau Amarelo", "A Pantera Cor De Rosa", "Super Mario Brothers", "Os Flinstones", "Vida Alegria E Esperanca", and "Dorme Com Os Anjos". CD

An organ bossa classic from the legendary Eumir Deodato – one of his strongest albums from his early years in Brazil! There's a very jazzy feel to the set all the way through – thanks to a tightly arranged group that not only features the organ and percussion you might expect from such a date, but which also features some great horn work as well! Trombone, tenor, and baritone sax all get in some nice licks – and Deodato's organ cooks wonderfully throughout, often with a quick-stepping bossa jazz sound that really keeps things lively. DeodatoPrelude ... LP
CTI, Early 70s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $9.99
A legendary album from the 70s funk scene – and one of the crowning achievements of keyboard maestro Eumir Deodato! Deodato got his start during the bossa years of the 60s – where his sophisticated charts were already enough to make his career a landmark – but in the following decade he picked up the Fender Rhodes, and really took off in a great new direction with classic records like this! The set's a wonderful blend of larger charts and jazzy soloing – with sublime Rhodes lines from the leader, plus a mix of acoustic and electric instrumentation in the best CTI mode – underscored by percussion from both Ray Barretto and Airto. The features Deodato's remake of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" into the funky "2001" – soaring with Fender Rhodes lines that set a new standard for the instrument, with a funky undercurrent that few would have expected for the tune. Other tracks are nice too – and include a great bossa-y version of "Baubles Bangles & Beads", plus "Spirit Of Summer", "September 13", and "Carly & Carole". LP, Vinyl record album

A rare Brazilian album from the legendary keyboardist Deodato – recorded right around the same time as his classic CTI albums Prelude and Deodato 2 – but much more obscure! This set's got a similar electric vibe, but is much more compact – with maybe more organ than Rhodes, on tunes that are short, groovy, and very much to the point – graced with the kind of arranging genius that Eumir showed during the bossa nova years, but with a lot more soul and funk elements in the mix! The whole thing's very unique – not like any other Deodato album – and it was partly recorded in New York, with help from Phil Bodner and Romeo Penque on saxes and flute, and trumpet from Marvin Stamm. Titles include "Arranha Ceu" – a remake of his "Skyscrapers" – plus "Puma Branco", "Extremo Norte", "Menina", "O Jogo", "Flap", "Atire A 1a Pedra", and "Carlota E Carolina". LP, Vinyl record album

ABC, Mid 60s. Sealed ... $4.99
A pretty sweet mid 60s disaster movie – filmed in Cinerama, and featuring an all-star cast that includes a great later Sal Mineo role! The music is lush and slightly sentimental – almost in a Rogers & Hammerstein mode, with South Pacific-y touches on the album's few vocal numbers. Barbara Werle sings the tunes "A Nice Old Fashioned Girl" and "Just Before Sunrise" – but the best number is the wonderful "East Of Java" title theme, sung by a male harmony group who's unfortunately unnamed on the cover! The set's from Donato's more recent years, but it's got the sparkle and soul of some of his earlier jazz-based projects – with rhythms that push past basic bossa, into the more complicated timings and phrasings of Donato's 70s years – with almost a Moacir Santos sense of arrangements to the small group instrumentation! Donato plays acoustic piano, and the group includes Luiz Alves on bass, Robertino Silva on drums, Ricardo Pontes on flute and alto, Leo Amuedo on guitar, and Jose Arimatea on flugelhorn. The sense of color here is brilliant – that mix of modernism and down-to-earth appeal that always made Donato one of the standouts of his generation – and titles include "Lua Dourada", "Uma Bencao", "Nao Tem Nada Nao", "Malandor", "Capricorn", "Rio Branca", "Uma Para O Duke", and a great version of the Clare Fischer tune "Morning". Cleveland Eaton & The Garden Of EatonKeep Love Alive ... LP
Ovation, 1979. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A mixture of funky jazz, soul, and disco – recorded with a host of studio players and a smooth jazzy finish. The record's trying to keep the groove going from Eaton's Instant Hip LP – which was quite a minor hit for him – and although we love the bassist as a jazz player, most of the album's dominated by vocal soul tracks and flashy club-oriented grooves. Includes the cool spacey track "Flying High", which has a compressed stepping groove and some cool voiceovers that talk about the dominant features of each Zodiac sign! Other cuts include "Keep Love Alive", "Burnin", "Get Off", "Free At Last", and "The Birmingham Train". LP, Vinyl record album

William EatonMusic By William Eaton ... LP
Morning Trip (Netherlands), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... About March 1, 2020 (delayed)
Beautifully mellow sounds from William Eaton – a 70s hippie-esque figure who wandered the desert in Arizona, and had a great talent for building his own stringed instruments! Here, William's working on an assortment of self-created guitars – one with 6 strings, one with 12, and one with a whopping 26 strings – dubbed an "elesion harmoniom", and sounding a lot more like a harp than anything else! The style of these tunes is spare and often spacey – played with sounds of nature in mind, often in ways that flow out in the breeze, and come back with a slight little echo. The home made ("private press", if you will) nature of the original album is expanded nicely here with additional notes and photos – and the CD features a total of 18 tracks in all. Duke EllingtonAnatomy Of A Murder ... CD
Sony, 1959. Used ... $5.99
A beautiful jazzy score by Duke Ellington – and a fitting companion to this classic Otto Preminger film! The record captures Ellington at a perfect moment – right during his Indigos period of increased sophistication, when his band was at an all-time level of perfection – and really shaking free of the too-familiar modes of the past. Ellington's music has a wonderful range of feeling here – even more so than usual, given the shifting scenes of the film – and the players are an all star lineup that includes Clark Terry on trumpet, Paul Gonsalves on tenor, Johnny Hodges on alto, and Jimmy Hamilton on clarinet. Titles include "Upper & Outest", "Almost Cried", "Sunswept Sunday", "Happy Anatomy", "Flirtibird", and "Low Key Lightly". CD

Renato GamaOlhos Negros Vivo (colored vinyl – with bonus 7 inch) ... LP
Tropical Diaspora (Germany), 2018. New Copy Gatefold ... $14.99
A contemporary set from Brazil, but one with a groove that feels like it was lifted right from the 70s – especially that period later in the decade when samba soul modes were coming into play with warmer boogie modes! The set's a live one, and features the strong lead vocals of Renato Gama with a very strong backing combo – great keyboards, funky rhythms, and a pair of female singers who really balance out the rougher edges of Renato's vocals nicely – making for a blend that almost reminds us of some of our favorite work by Emilio Santiago back in the day, especially some of his albums for Philips. Titles include "Jogo", "O Futuro", "Rita", "Vai Bem", "O Iludido", "Banzo", "O Saudoso Guardador De Reses", and "Comida De Comer Com A Mao". Also features a bonus 7" single – with older album tracks "Essa Preta E Treta" and "Engraxate", both by the group Nhocune Soul. LP, Vinyl record album

Steve GrossmanKatonah (180 gram pressing) ... LP
DIW/Tiger Bay (UK), 1986. New Copy (reissue)... $12.99
A bold little set from Steve Grossman – a record that's nicely poised between his frenetic work of the 70s and mellower moments of later years – done in quartet formation, but with plenty of focus on Steve's wonderful tenor, especially on the longer tracks! There's a very nice "bit" in Grossman's reed on most of the numbers here – a sound that's not as screeching as on his 70s dates, but which often hints at that direction, then swings back into a rounder, fuller tone on the horn. Backing is by Takehiro Honda on piano, Masahiro Yoshida on drums, and either Hideo Kawahara or Yasushi Yoneki on bass – on titles that include "Taurus People", "Soultrane", "Katonah", and "Afternoon In Paris". John HiattHangin Around The Observatory/Overcoats ... CD
Epic/BGO (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
Two Epic albums from John Hiatt – back to back on a single CD! First up is Hangin Around The Observatory – an early gem from the great John Hiatt – a singer/songwriter who seems to spring into the world with a sound and style that's already fully formed! Hiatt recorded the album at Columbia's Nashville studios – which might emphasize some of the country currents in his music – but as always with his albums, there's a special, specific sort of vibe going on – smart songwriting, and an approach that's post-folk, with vocals that sometimes have a Randy Newman or Tom Waits sort of bite – a quality that maybe kept John far from the charts, but high in the hearts of critics and fans over the 70s. Titles include "Maybe Baby Say You Do", "Whistles In My Ears", "Full Moon", "Ocean", "Little Blue Song For You", and "Hangin Around The Observatory". On Overcoats, John Hiatt really finds his own groove – a special singer/songwriter mode that would make him one of the most distinct talents of his time – and part of a unique 70s lineage of new male singers, which might include Tom Waits and John Prine! As with both of those artists, there's a lot of older roots in Hiatt's music – but taken apart, and reworked towards newer modes – with especially smart songwriting that kind of sneaks up on you, especially when delivered with the raspy charms of John's vocals. Titles include "One More Time", "I'm Tired Of Your Stuff", "I Want Your Love Inside Of Me", "The Lady Of The Night", "Motorboat To Heaven", and "Smiling In The Rain". CD

70s Polish fusion at its finest, served up by the always-tight Laboratorium – a group who know when to jam at the right points, but who can also lay back into a spacier groove as well! This album does a good job of mixing in plenty of keyboards – Fender Rhodes and Arp, juxtaposed nicely next to some acoustic piano which rounds out the sound and gives the record a bit more of an earthy feel underneath. The guitars are nice too – never over the top, and following the spacier lead of the keys to create some expansive electric soundscapes as the set rolls on. Titles are a mix of very short and very long numbers – with titles that include "The Journey", "I'm Sorry I'm Not Driver", "Lady Rolland", "Quasimodo", and "An Icon". LP, Vinyl record album

Arthur Lee left his group Love behind for this early 70s debut as a solo act – but the record also seems to have Lee returning to some of the heavier blues-inspired sounds of that group's early years too! Lee is a monster here in the spotlight – fantastic guitar lines effortlessly flying from his fingers, vocal power that's more varied and dynamic than some of his later Love performances, and a sense of occasional wit that's echoed by the cover. Arthur also wrote, produced, and arranged the whole thing – which was recorded in Hollywood with help from some of his friends – on titles that include "Hamburger Breath Stinkfinger", "He Knows A Lot of Good Women", "You Can Save Up To 50% But You're Still A Long Ways From Home", "He Said She Said", "Love Jumped Through My Window", "Everybody's Gotta Live", and "You Want Change For Your Rerun". A beautifully dynamic set from Mohamed Issa Haji – aka Matona – a musician from Zanzibar with a specialty in Taarab, which is an unusual hybrid of African, Arabic, and Indian musical styles! The group here features Matona on oud, vocals, and percussion – illuminated by very colorful elements from guitar, tenor, bass, drums, violin, and percussion – plus vocals from the rest of the group as well – and Gora Mohamed Gora plays the rich-voiced qanun on three of the album's ten tracks, which adds this depth to the record that's amazing! Instrumental passages dominate more than the vocals – and there's some really fantastic interplay between some of the Norwegian musicians in the group too – on titles that include "Aziza", "Sikitiko", "Alaminadura", "Zena", "Ashairejea", and "Ashiki Baya". Fernando Porto's very much at the top of her groove here – stepping out with the same sort of hip rhythms and electric elements that made us love her early work on Trama Records! Porto's way more than just another Brazilian female singer – as she definitely digs a wide variety of 21st Century soul from around the globe, and brings it into play in her music – a touch of London here, Tokyo there – all wrapped up beautifully with her own seductively soulful vocals, in ways that make the album bristle with fresh, new energy. This time around, Porto handles most of the rhythms and keyboards herself – and titles include "Na Bossa Ou No Samba", "Roda De Samba", "Tanto Tempo Faz", "Virou Cancao", "Conte-Me Tudo", "Perdi O Tom", "Vem Morar Comigo", "Auto-Retrato", and "Agora E Minha Vez". A complete run of music from the Revillos – a group who only gave the world two full studio albums in their initial run, then recorded live albums later in the 90s – all of which are here, along with a whole host of bonus material too! The Revillos always had a bit of a retro look to them – and although they grew up in the post-punk years of the UK, their style is a mad mash-up of new wave modes and 50s elements – maybe vaguely in the territory of the B52s, but with a style that's very much the group's own! This set brings together a massive 140 tracks in all – the full albums Rev Up and Attack Of The Revillos, the latter in two different versions – plus the sets Live & On Fire In Japan, and Totally Alive – and then two more live recordings from 1981, one British and one American – plus lots of bonus tracks from singles, some John Peel sessions, and other BBC material too – in a hefty box with a big booklet of notes. Finders Keepers (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... About May 30, 2020 (delayed)
One of the rarest albums ever from the mighty Masahiko Sato – a Japanese musician we love for his jazz, funk, and psychedelic sounds – all of which come into play on this unusual animated soundtrack! The music is plenty trippy right from the start – very offbeat, from the instrumentation to the production to the pacing – never in a mode that's too avant, but which is very much its own thing – as Sato weaves a way forward with cool spacey keyboards, slow-brooding basslines, and these dreamy vocals from singer Chinatsu Nakayama! Some moments feel like the best funky electric Italian sound library material of the time – but there's also a lot more going on, too – including some of that great style Sato would use on other albums, when he'd blend psychedelic inspiration with very groovy jazz. The great pianist Masahiko Satoh works here alongside the drums of Sabu Toyozumi – on two long tracks that really show both players at their sonic best! Satoh plays in a way that swings between structure and freedom – and his movements seem to be echoed by Toyozumi on the kit – sometimes progressing rhythmically with this slight sort of swing – other times as frenzied as Satoh on the keys, but always with this sensitive ear for just the right tone. Titles include "The Move For The Quiet" and "The Quiet For The Move". LP, Vinyl record album
