Black PumasBlack Pumas ... CD
ATO, 2019. New Copy ... $7.99 11.98
Soulful sounds from Black Pumas – a collaboration between singer Eric Burton and the great Adrian Quesada – the latter an instrumentalist and producer that you'll know from a variety of different funky projects over the years! This set might well be Adrian's ticket to the big time – as Burton's a singer with a very strong range, and great crossover potential – echoing Al Green one minute, hitting deeper vibes the next – and working alongside small combo backing that has plenty of laidback guitar lines and warm keyboards, all produced with the usual Quesada touch! Titles include "Oct 33", "Fire", "Colors", "Know You Better", "Stay Gold", "Old Man", "Confines", and "Touch The Sky". CD

✨✧ Black PumasCapitol Cuts – Live At Studio A (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
ATO, 2021. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A hell of a record from The Black Pumas – one that maybe stands as a great answer to anyone who might think they're just a flash in the pan! The set was recorded in late 2020, after the group had faced a season of cancelled shows, and life in isolation – which left them heading to the Capitol Studios in Hollywood, and bursting forth with a really back to basics vibe – a mix of soulful vocals and funky instrumentation that really goes back to the sound that inspired the group in the first place! The whole thing was recorded live, with no overdubs or anything else – and there's a classic/contemporary blend that's great – on titles that include "Colors", "Know You Better", "Old Man", "I'm Ready", "Black Moon Rising", "Stay Gold", and "Red Rover". Tom ZeEstudando O Pagode – Na Opereta Segregamulher E Amor ... CD
Luaka Bop, 2005. Used ... $3.99
A mighty new effort from the amazing Tom Ze – a wild, heaving stylistic sprawl that's as dense and wonderful as his other recent efforts for Trama – but far more ambitious than anything he's done in many years! If you know anything about Tom Ze, you know that the man's aural art is quite difficult to describe, from the post-Tropicalia heyday to today! This set is a 16 song operatic suite that seems to be a stylistic sibling to his great (and quite rare) Estudando O Samba album from the mid 70s. Tom is taking on Greek mythology and age-old issues of gender oppression here – on an album produced with a sly, sinister groove by Jair Olivera. Incredible stuff – with all of the jerky, pulsating avant funk and leftfield grooves of Tom Ze at his recent best! The tracks are divided into 3 sections (Primero Ato, Segundo Ato and Terciero Ato) and include "Ave Dor Maria", "Estupido Rapaz", "O Amor E Um Rock", "Elaeu", "Para La Do Para", "Prazer Carnal", "Teatro (Dom Quixote)", "A Volta Do Trem Das Onze" and more! Satoshi AshikawaStill Way (Wave Notation 2) ... LP
WRWTFWW (Switzerland), 1982. New Copy ... $26.99
A beautiful example of the really special sort of instrumental record that was coming out of Japan in the early 80s – music that's spare and minimal, but quite different than any sort of similar projects from other parts of the globe! Satoshi Ashikawa creates sounds in ways that resonate both with the ancient and contemporary, organic and urban, at a level that's very slow-building and striking in its careful use of sound and space – served up here on instrumentation that includes vibes from Midori Takada, piano from Tomoko Sono, and harp from Yuko Utsumi – always tuneful, but in ways that are more like a natural progression of sound than conventional music. Titles include "Prelude", "Still Park", "Still Sky", "Wrinkle", and "Image Under The Tree". LP, Vinyl record album

Okka Disk, 2008. New Copy 2CD Gatefold ... $10.99 19.99
An explosive meeting between Atomic and Ken Vandermark's School Days combo – proof that the Chicago/Scandinavia connection is stronger than ever! The double-length performance was recorded at Chicago's Green Mill nightclub, and it features an impressive lineup with Ken Vandermark on baritone sax and bass clarinet, Havard Wiik on piano, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Magnus Broo on trumpet, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass, Fredrik Ljungkvist on tenor, Kjell Nordeson on vibes, and Paal Nilssen-Love – all working on very long, open tracks that almost have the feel of some of the best improvising orchestra work from years back. The vibes add a nicely chromatic quality to the work amidst some of the fiercer horn passages – and titles include "Deadline", "Irrational Ceremony", "Visitors", "Andersonville", "Dark Easter", "Fort Funston", "Bunuel At The Cocktail Party", and "Closing Stages". A brilliant pairing of free jazz forces – the Chicago-based School Days group of Ken Vandermark, and the groundbreaking Atomic combo from the Nordic jazz underground! The players here are all very like-minded, and fold together beautifully – in an octet lineup that features reeds from Ken Vandermark and Frekerik Ljungkvist, trumpet from Magnus Broo, trombone from Jeb Bishop, piano from Havard Wiik, vibes from Kjell Nordeson, bass from Ingebrigt Haker Flaten, and drums from Paal-Nilssen Love! Both Flaten and Love would become frequent collaborators in Chicago over the years – but this set captures the meeting of the groups in a very fresh way – a double-length set that's all original material – with titles that include "W Meets A", "Transparent Taylor", "Ink Worm", "Kerosene", "Conjugations" and "Dog Days". Atomic ForestObsession ... CD
Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $9.99 19.98
The collected work of a mighty trippy group from the Indian scene – a psychedelic combo who worked in the 70s, but who had the same sort of edge you'd hear from the American and British scenes of the late 60s! In truth, there's a fair bit of Anglo influence going on in the music – not just in the English language lyrics, but also in the way the guitars come together with stretched-out, soaring brilliance – flying eight miles high to the sky in a heady brew of freak and fuzz – and turning this approach to some surprising soundtrack numbers too! Production is perfect for the band's vibe – often spacing things out in a really cool way – with some slightly primitive modes that also remind us of the South American psych scene of a few years before. Now Again did a brilliant job with the package – bringing together a host of the group's best tracks from the mid 70s, and a bonus 20 page booklet with full notes on the group, and some very cool photos and ephemera. The whole thing even features a few unreleased numbers – and titles include "Obsession 77", "Sunshine Day", "Butterfly Version 1", "Theme From The Godfather", "Theme From The Fox", "Windmills Of Your Mind", "Booboo Lullaby", "Man You're Not Number One", "Travel On", "Gesthemene", and "Foxy Lady". Gato BarbieriChapter Four – Alive In New York ... CD
Impulse, 1975. Used ... $11.99
Searing live work from Gato Barbieri – a brilliant little album that follows on the spirit of his other Latin America sessions for Impulse! The format here is similar to those studio outings – an organic blend of percussion, keyboards, and sax – all bubbling together in a highly rhythmic mode that easily shifts between electric and acoustic statements, all in a jazz-based pursuit of older Latin American rhythms and expressions! Eddie Martinez plays some great Fender Rhodes on the album – ringing out with warm tones that are strongly offset by Gato's sharp-edge tenor lines – and all tracks are nice and long, and flow with a sense of creative energy that almost surpasses the studio albums in the series! Titles include "Milonga Triste", "La China Leoncia", "Baihia", and "Lluvia Azul". CD

Gato BarbieriGato Barbieri – Bahia ... LP
Fania, 1982. Very Good ... $19.99
A lesser-known indie session by the great Gato Barbieri – a set recorded for Fania after Gato's dates for bigger labels in the 70s, but one that's done with a really full, professional sound overall! There's a fair bit of electric instrumentation in the mix – guitars from Joe Beck, David Spinozza, and Ryo Kawasaki, plus some Fender Rhodes as well – but the sound is never too slick or commercial, thanks to a production approach that largely keeps the players at a warm, spontaneous level. Teo Macero helped on production – which is possibly part of the album's success – and titles include "Alma", "Mowgli", "Playtime", "Memories", and "Retorno". LP, Vinyl record album

Gato BarbieriIn Search Of The Mystery ... LP
ESP, 1967. Very Good+ ... $39.99
One of the first albums ever cut as a leader by reedman Gato Barbieri – and a very sharp-edged session that's quite different than his better-known work in the 70s! Barbieri's tenor here has an incredible tone – as deeply soulful as Pharoah Sanders or late John Coltrane, and blown with a great sense of freedom – really stretching out on the album's long tracks. Gato never lets himself get too unfocused, though – and the album's an illustration of a side of his talents that was perhaps only shown this well on his recordings with Don Cherry. Players include Calo Scott on cello, Sirone on bass, and Bobby Kapp on drums – and the album's got a vibe that easily matches other ESP sets from the time by Charles Tyler or Sonny Simmons. Titles include "In Search Of The Mystery", "Obsession No 2", "Michelle", and "Cinematheque". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black & white label pressing. Cover has some light wear, light splitting on the spine, and a small bit of pen – but is nice overall.)

Freedom/Muzak (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... $24.99
Two jazz giants of the 70s come together on this rare Italian recording from the late 60s – South African pianist Dollar Brand (Abdulla Ibrahim) and Argentine tenorist Gato Barbieri – both working here in spare duo formation, with edges that are a fair bit sharper than most of their later work! The format is incredibly spare – just tenor and piano, plus some occasional cello work by Brand – dark and angular, but also filled with small flowers of hope, flowering in the spontaneous presence of these two great minds – a tremendous spirit that makes the record very different than freer jazz outings, and which maybe points the way towards some of the classic European tenor/piano recordings to come. Tracks are long, with a free flowing quality that's infused with soul and spirit – and titles include "Hamba Khale", "The Aloe & The Wildrose", and "To Elsa". CD

Vinyl Magic (Italy), 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... $29.99
One of the most bizarre early works by Italian composer Franco Battiato – a record whose original cover featured a fetus on the cover, an inside image of his paper-mache mother, with a walk-in birth canal, and a subtitle that reads "return to the new world"! The musical style mixes Battiato's mid 70s electronic minimalism with an approach that still retains elements of experimental rock – in that the songs have straighter vocal passages than some of his more abstract work, with lyrics in Italian in a fairly conventional format, layered over strange textures on keyboards, sound effects, and electronics. Titles include "Una Cellula", "Energia", "Fenomenologia", "Anafase", and "Mutazione". LP, Vinyl record album

There's nothing silent here – as the album's one of the most biting 70s albums we've heard from vibist Karl Berger – an album that's relatively free overall, and which features some fantastic work by Masahiko Sato on piano! Sato really seems to bring out the darker tones in Berger's vibes, and his sometimes use of marimbas – really wonderful hues that are especially compelling when the whole group takes off for a long free run of improvisation! Other players include Allen Blairman on drums and Adelhard Roidinger on bass – and titles include "From Now On", "With Silence", "Get Up", and "The Only One Of Its Kind In My Garden". CD

Musicians are the cream of the crop of the international avant scene at the time – and include Roswell Rudd on trombone, Gato Barbieri on tenor, Perry Robinson on clarinet, Carla Bley on organ, Don Preston on moog, Michael Mantler on ring modulated piano, Paul Motian on drums, Charlie Haden on bass, John McLaughlin on guitar, and many others – too numerous to mention here! Dollar BrandAnatomy Of A South African Village (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Freedom/Muzak (Japan), 1965. New Copy ... $24.99
Tremendous early work from South African pianist Dollar Brand (aka Abdullah Ibrahim) – exactly the kind of sounds that set him apart from so many other musicians at the time, and which brought him great attention on the European scene of the 60s! The tunes are long and open – strongly characterized by that rhythmic pulse that Brand borrows from his roots, but inflected with all these dark modern tones on piano – territory that Randy Weston was attempting a few years before, but which Dollar Brand really knocks out of the park with a recording like this! The rest of the group features Johnny Gertze on bass and Makaya Ntshoko on drums – both players who are really well-tuned to the groove – and the set features Brand's originals "Anatomy Of A South African Village", "Tintiyana" and "Honey, plus versions of the Monk tunes, "Round Midnight" and "Light Blue". CD features four bonus tracks – "The Dream", "Mamma", "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", and a 20 minute medley titled "Boulevard East/Sunset In Blue/Easter Joy". CD

Michael Cosmic/Phill Musra Group/World's Experience OrchestraPeace In The World/Creator Spaces/The Prayer (3CD set) ... CD
Cosmic/Now Again, 1974. New Copy 3CD ... $9.99 20.98
An amazing package – a pair of rare avant jazz albums, presented here together! The first album is Peace In The World – maybe the only album issued under the name of Michael Cosmic – but a set that's part of a key legacy with his brother, reedman Phill Musra! The set has Cosmic in very heady territory – sounds that come from his young tenure in the AACM, his brief time with Cecil Taylor, and his budding reputation on the 70s Boston scene – where the set was recorded, and almost stands as a precursor to the rich legacy of improvisational jazz that would emerge on the New England scene for decades to come! Tracks are long and very free, but have spiritual currents too – and Cosmic is mostly on piano, with Musra on soprano sax and tenor, Leonard Brown on soprano and tenor, John Jamyll Jones on bass, Huseyin Ertunc on drums, and Eric Jackson on percussion. Titles include "We Love You Malcolm X", "Peace In The World", "Sapce On Space", and "Arabia". Next is the related album Creator Spaces, by Phill Musra – recorded at the time when he was part of the very underground Boston avant scene – a world that had a slightly different vibe than music coming from Chicago, Detroit, or New York! The album's got a spiritual avant bent – soulful at the core, with lots of references to outer space as well – and an approach that feels a lot like a classic Saturn Records session by Sun Ra, both in sound and spirit! Musra plays reeds, chimes, and percussion – and the group features some incredible sax work by Michael Cosmic, who also plays a bit of organ, again in a tripped-out, Ra-type way. Huseyin Ertunc plays percussion – very free and loose, in ways that are a great balance to the more angular lines of the reeds – and tracks include "The Creator Is So Far Out", "The Creator Spaces", "Egypt", and "Arabia". Also features unreleased tracks "The Creator Is So Far Out (unreleased version)" and "Phyllis". Added to the set is a really special bonus third CD – an unreleased long live performance of "The Prayer" by Worlds Experience Orchestra – a group from the same scene at the time – with Shaddu Jones on piano, Stan Strickland on tenor and soprano, Frank Peterson on alto, John Jamyll Jones on bass, Robert Ruff on cello, Larry Lerner on drums, and John Klein on amplified violin. Gal CostaEstratosferica ... CD
Sony (Brazil), 2015. Used ... $9.99
Gal Costa looks surpisingly youthful on the cover – and she's also sounding more youthful in her music than we've heard in many years – thanks to a key collaboration with Kassin and Moreno Veloso! Both of the younger musicians really find a fresh space for Gal to work with – a nice shift away from some of the more staid, mature modes of her other recent records – and a style that brings out all the creativity that made us fall in love with Costa so many years ago! This shift isn't a return to Tropicalia, but instead a move towards that playful, genre-stepping territory that you'll find in both Veloso and Kassin's music, especially the latter. One of Costa's best in years – and with titles that include "Amor Se Aclame", "Anuviar", "Espelho D'Agua", "Ecstasy", "Jabitaca", and "Sem Medo Nem Esperanca". CD

CTI, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $24.99
Funky keyboards galore – and one of the greatest records ever from this legendary Brazilian jazz talent! The album follows nicely off Deodato's Prelude classic for CTI – and like that one, this set's built on long-flowing tunes that rise and fall with a wonderful sense of rhythm – a sublime electric piano groove that's quite different than anything Deodato recorded before – and possibly never realized this perfectly again after his CTI years. Other players include Stanley Clarke on bass, Billy Cobham on drums, and Hubert Laws on flute – and titles include the massive Latin funk track "Super Strut", plus the tunes "Pavane For A Dead Princess", "Skyscrapers", and a great version of "Nights In White Satin". ✨✧ DeodatoNight Cruiser/Happy Hour (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Warner/Robinsongs (UK), 1980/1982. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A pair of early 80s gems from this Brazilian keyboard legend – back to back on a single CD! Night Cruiser is a key record in Deodato's move from funky jazz in the 70s to modern soul in the 80s – and one that showcases the best of his talents in both genres! The approach here is more tightly arranged and produced than that of his earlier CTI sides – but in a mode that's still plenty nice to our ears – as Deodato's uncanny sense of rhythm and timing is still very firmly in place, making the set way way more than just a smooth jazz album – and pushing it strongly into the realm of soulful spacey fusion! There's some really great tracks on the set – like the amazing "Skatin", a sweet keyboard number that's a perfect roller skating jam (in case you couldn't guess from the title) – plus "Love Magic", "Uncle Funk", "East Side Strut", and "Night Cruiser". Happy Hour is a classic from Deodato's soul-based years with a nice little R&B-inspired groove! Happy Hour was done at a time when Deodato was really getting into a lot of modern soul production and arranging work with other groups – and here, he tries his hand wonderfully at the style himself – transforming his 70s jazz funk groove into a tightly snapping 80s soul approach! Most tracks on the set feature vocals – by singers who include Kelly Barretto, Eban Kelly, and Candi Staton – but the instrumentation behind them is still plenty jazzy too, thanks to some nice work by Deodato on Fender Rhodes, mini moog, Arp, and other keyboards. Titles include "I Never Get Enough", "Keep On Movin", "Happy Hour", "Just This One Night", "Tears Of A Clown", "Sweet Magic", and "Keep It In The Family". CD features two bonus tracks – "Uncle Funk (7" mix)" and "Keep On Movin (7" mix)". CD

An organ bossa classic from the legendary Eumir Deodato – one of his strongest albums from his early years in Brazil! There's a very jazzy feel to the set all the way through – thanks to a tightly arranged group that not only features the organ and percussion you might expect from such a date, but which also features some great horn work as well! Trombone, tenor, and baritone sax all get in some nice licks – and Deodato's organ cooks wonderfully throughout, often with a quick-stepping bossa jazz sound that really keeps things lively. Titles include "O Sol Nascera", "Samba Do Dom Natural", "Terra De Ninguem", "E Bom Parar", and "Ataque". CD

DeodatoPrelude ... LP
CTI, Early 70s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $16.99
A legendary album from the 70s funk scene – and one of the crowning achievements of keyboard maestro Eumir Deodato! Deodato got his start during the bossa years of the 60s – where his sophisticated charts were already enough to make his career a landmark – but in the following decade he picked up the Fender Rhodes, and really took off in a great new direction with classic records like this! The set's a wonderful blend of larger charts and jazzy soloing – with sublime Rhodes lines from the leader, plus a mix of acoustic and electric instrumentation in the best CTI mode – underscored by percussion from both Ray Barretto and Airto. The features Deodato's remake of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" into the funky "2001" – soaring with Fender Rhodes lines that set a new standard for the instrument, with a funky undercurrent that few would have expected for the tune. Other tracks are nice too – and include a great bossa-y version of "Baubles Bangles & Beads", plus "Spirit Of Summer", "September 13", and "Carly & Carole". LP, Vinyl record album

Equipe/Far Out (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 29.99
A rare Brazilian album from the legendary keyboardist Deodato – recorded right around the same time as his classic CTI albums Prelude and Deodato 2 – but much more obscure! This set's got a similar electric vibe, but is much more compact – with maybe more organ than Rhodes, on tunes that are short, groovy, and very much to the point – graced with the kind of arranging genius that Eumir showed during the bossa nova years, but with a lot more soul and funk elements in the mix! The whole thing's very unique – not like any other Deodato album – and it was partly recorded in New York, with help from Phil Bodner and Romeo Penque on saxes and flute, and trumpet from Marvin Stamm. Titles include "Arranha Ceu" – a remake of his "Skyscrapers" – plus "Puma Branco", "Extremo Norte", "Menina", "O Jogo", "Flap", "Atire A 1a Pedra", and "Carlota E Carolina". LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 25.99
Excellent funky work from Lou Donaldson – and a groundbreaking record that was the first to feature him playing on Blue Note with drummer Idris Muhammad – who is listed on the session under his birth name, Leo Morris! Muhammad gives the album that crackling funky bottom sound that instantly defined Lou's later years at Blue Note – a hard and heavy approach to soul jazz that's had incredible repercussions in the world of hip hop, as well as soul and funk. The rest of the group features soul jazz burners Lonnie Smith on organ, Melvin Lastie on trumpet, and George Benson on guitar – and the album includes the highly successful "Alligator Boogaloo", plus hard groovers "The Thang", "Aw Shucks!", and "One Cylinder". Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad with Joao DonatoJoao Donato – Jazz Is Dead 7 ... CD
Jazz Is Dead, 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A really great entry in this excellent series – one that not only features lots of great Fender Rhodes from Brazilian jazz legend Joao Donato, but also vocals from Loren Oden on almost every track – which makes the whole thing feel like a fantastic hybrid of Joao's genius with a righteous approach to spacey soul! Oden sounds maybe even better here than ever before – singing jazzily, and drifting in and out of the instrumentation – which often has a more dynamic lead in the mix, with lots of work on a variety of instruments from Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad – upbeat, but just a few shades short of funk, which works perfectly for the way that Donato slides his Rhodes in and out of the tunes. Titles include "Forever More", "Sua Beleza E Beleza", "Desejo De Amor", "Aquarius", "Nao Negue Seu Coracao", "Liaisons", and "Adrian Ali & Gregory". CD

Philips/Universal (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $13.99
A sweet electric 70s session from the mighty Joao Donato – very different than his earlier bossa work of the 60s – and with the same funky appeal as the best work on his classic Quem E Quem album! This set's got a tighter feel overall – very much in a samba soul style, with lots of great Brazilian bits mixed up with funk and jazz touches – including a range of great keyboards handled by Donato himself! Drums are by the mighty Wilson Das Neves – who brings in some breaks at a few points – and the whole thing's supremely soulful too – with titles that include the funky classic "Bananeira", plus "Patumbalacunde", "Lugar Comum", "Tudo Tem", and "Naturalmente". A gem of a record – one we wouldn't part with for anything! Joao Donato's best known as one of the founding fathers of bossa nova – better known for his 60s work over the years, than he was for 70s electric work like this. Fortunately, international groove hounds picked up on the record years back, and it's been firmly brought back into the limelight as the classic it truly is! The set's an incredible reworking of Donato's sound – the gentle jazzy phrasing of the bossa years turned towards mellow groovers that feature a heck of a lot of electric piano. The album's got a few classic funky tracks, and some even more wonderful tracks that feature Joao working sparely on Fender Rhodes – accompanying himself on raspy vocals on most of the cuts! The whole thing's great – and titles include "Nana Das Aquas", "A Ra", "Amazonas", "Mentiras", "Cala Boca Menino", "Cade Jodel", "Me Deixa", and "Ate Quem Sabe". CD

Some of the earliest work ever recorded by Joao Donato – pre-bossa tunes with a jazzy dancing groove! The style here mixes together swinging jazz with other elements of Brazilian rhythms – percussion grooving with piano, accordion, and some very nice work on clarinet – jazzy and swinging, but with some earthier touches in the rhythms too. The style is at once rootsy and modern, in that unique blend of styles that Brazilian groups seemed to virtually invent! A great look at Donato's pre-bossa career – with titles that include "Baiao", "Peguei Um Ita No Norte", "Baiao Da Garoa", and "Comigo E Assim". CD

Cleveland EatonPlenty Good Eaton ... CD
Black Jazz/Real Gone, 1974. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
One of the most electric albums on the legendary Black Jazz label – a hip set of funky fusion tracks from bassist Cleveland Eaton, with a vibe that's similar to his album for the Gamble label, and his funky 45 work with The Kats! The record's a good extension of Eaton's roots in the Cadet studio scene working with Ramsey Lewis – and as proof of those roots, the record contains work by loads of key Chicago players – including Ari Brown on tenor, Odell Brown on keyboards and Hammond, Duke Payne on tenor and flute, and Morris Jennings on percussion! There's a wicked groove on most cuts, and the set was also recorded at the Chess studios – which furthers the Chicago vibe – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Chi-town Theme", "Keena", "Moe Let's Have A Party", "Kaiser 405", "All Your Lover, All Day, All Night", and "Hamburg 302". Sally EatonFarewell American Tour ... CD
Paramount/Early Dawn (Germany), 1970. New Copy ... $8.99
A really unusual album from singer Sally Eaton – not really her farewell tour of America, although the title also matches the subtle drama of the cover image and the way that Sally puts together the lyrics! The tunes are very unique, explained a bit by Eaton in the notes – which also include her horoscope chart, in case you want to figure her out – just the sort of touch that makes the whole thing a wonderfully distinct album, even during a period when American music was already overflowing with distinction! Arrangements are by Harold Wheeler and George Brackman – and if you know Wheeler's work, especially for the stage, you'll get a great idea of the vibe here – although Sally's mix of fragility and intelligence in her vocal approach is something that needs to be heard to be understood. Titles include "This Time Next Autumn", "Flowers In The Air", "Once Before You Go", "I Don't Want To Need You Anymore", "Reader & Advisor", and "Long Time Lover". CD

Morning Trip (Netherlands), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99
Beautifully mellow sounds from William Eaton – a 70s hippie-esque figure who wandered the desert in Arizona, and had a great talent for building his own stringed instruments! Here, William's working on an assortment of self-created guitars – one with 6 strings, one with 12, and one with a whopping 26 strings – dubbed an "elesion harmoniom", and sounding a lot more like a harp than anything else! The style of these tunes is spare and often spacey – played with sounds of nature in mind, often in ways that flow out in the breeze, and come back with a slight little echo – completely sublime, and in a territory that's all his own! Columbia, 1959. Used ... $6.99
A beautiful jazzy score by Duke Ellington – and a fitting companion to this classic Otto Preminger film! The record captures Ellington at a perfect moment – right during his Indigos period of increased sophistication, when his band was at an all-time level of perfection – and really shaking free of the too-familiar modes of the past. Ellington's music has a wonderful range of feeling here – even more so than usual, given the shifting scenes of the film – and the players are an all star lineup that includes Clark Terry on trumpet, Paul Gonsalves on tenor, Johnny Hodges on alto, and Jimmy Hamilton on clarinet. Titles include "Upper & Outest", "Almost Cried", "Sunswept Sunday", "Happy Anatomy", "Flirtibird", and "Low Key Lightly". Plus, the CD features a huuuuge amount of bonus tracks – including other tunes from the movie, outtakes, and even the original single version of the theme! 26 cuts in all! CD

Pianist Satoko Fujii has a really unique touch on the piano here – free lines that are very much in a Cecil Taylor side of the spectrum, but also often handled with a much lighter approach – so that there's these fleeting, scattered sounds that keep exploding from the instrument – matched with all these equally light touches from Mark Dresser on bass and Jim Black on drums! There's definitely a lot of improvisation taking place, but you can also get the sense of a larger structure in Fujii's approach – one that's often painterly, even when abstract – a bit hard to put in words, but very striking throughout. Pianist Satoko Fujii is at the helm of a larger group here, but one that still follows some of the freer, looser sense of her smaller group recordings! There's a nicely resonant sense of sound going on – almost a clash between instruments at times, mixed with more harmonious moments at others – line a lineup that features Curtiss Hasselbring and Joey Sellers on trombones, Oscar Noriega and Briggan Krauss on alto saxes, Ellery Eskelin and Tony Malaby on tenors, and Herb Robertson, Laurie Frink, Natsuki Tamura, and Steven Bernstein on trumpets. Fujii's piano rings out boldly in the more explosive moments, but also has a way of quietly guiding the procedures too – on long titles that include "Pakonya", "Tatsu Take", "Incompleted", and "The Future Of The Past/Straw Dance". A fantastic entry into the improvising orchestra genre – a set that's similar to classics by ICP and London Jazz Composers Orchestra – and which also features a bit of crossover in members with both groups! The lineup here features the cream of the crop of the European avant scene of the late 70s – all brought together with that special care that always makes Horo Records albums so wonderful! There's a beautiful balance between group sounds and individual solo voices – very important, given that the strong lineup features musicians who includes Roswell Rudd and Danilo Terenzi on trombone, Kenny Wheeler and Enrico Rava on trumpets, Steve Potts on alto and soprano, Evan Parker on tenor and soprano, Steve Lacy on soprano, Massimo Urbani on alto, Frederik Rzewski and Martin Joseph on pianos, Tristan Honsinger and Irene Aebi on cellos, Kent Carter and Roberto Bellatalla on bass, Paul Lytton on drums and percussion, and Noel McGhee and Roberto Gatto on drums. Phew – that's a long list, and if you know the names at all, you'll know the tremendous sense of creativity that goes into the record – on long improvised tracks that include "Tromblues", "La Quercia", "Vortex Waltz", "The Message From The Maine", and "Dialogando". Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... $13.99
Definite spontaneous sounds from the great Albert Mangelsdorff – a set that has the trombonist working alongside the up-and-coming Japanese pianist Masahiko Sato, who also plays some ring modulator on the album! Sato's almost the driving force here – although that role might also go to drummer Allen Blairman, a player we don't know much at all, but who really pushes the group strongly forward from the bottom – as Sato serves up some of his most angular, inventive lines to date – and bassist Peter Warren shifts from bow to plucking, depending on the sonic needs of the moment. Mangelsdorff is great, as always – and as always, really knows how to step back when needed, then jump into the fray in just the right way. Os GatosAquele Som Dos Gatos ... CD
Philips/Universal (Japan), 1966. New Copy ... $13.99
One of the most legendary groups from the bossa era in Brazil – a combo of incredible players, working with sublime arrangements by Eumir Deodato – all in a sound that hardly been matched again! The group only ever recorded two albums, but they've had a lasting impact on the sound of bossa for years to come – thanks to an expansive vision that brings together spare rhythms, jazz soloing, and larger strings – all with a quality that's lighter than air – almost a sum that's far less than the total of its elements – but in a really great way! The sense of spareness and poise here is really amazing – years ahead of Deodato's better-known US arrangements in the late 60s, and somehow even more impressive here. Players include Paulo Moura on alto sax, Neco on guitar, Meirelles on flute, Wilson Das Neves on drums, and Mauricio Einhorn on harmonica – and some tracks also feature a bit of light vocals floating along gently, almost as instruments themselves. Titles include "Aqua De Beber", "Clichet", "Feitinha Pro Poeta", "E Nada Mais", "Blue Set", and "Silk Stop". CD

A classic debut from The Radiators From Space – a group who were contemporaries to the first wave of British punk, but who found a special raw sound that was all their own! In a way, the sound here is almost the earlier pub rock generation spun through the noisier modes allowed by punk – especially in the way the guitars are right up front in the mix, and the vocals seem to go out of their way to show off the group's accents and attitudes. At the time, folks would have drawn a firm line between this and work by the Clash or Pistols – but all these many years later, the record stands as a wonderful document of the time – and a much-needed piece of the larger punk rock puzzle. Drummer Tom Rainey is the leader, but he's a nicely subtle talent here – really letting the group finds its sound and shape as a whole – which makes for some beautiful interplay between the trumpet of Ralph Alessi, saxes of Ingrid Laubrock, piano of Jacob Sacks, and bass of Drew Gress! All five elements of the group have an immediate resonance together – one that almost makes you feel as if the set was conceived as a drum-less session at the start, letting the other four sounds come together – although that would hardly be the case, with Tom's name up front! Alessi and Laubrock sound especially nice in each others' company, and Gress has a way of hanging low, and really filling out the sound – on titles that include "I Fall In Love Too Easily", "Just In Time/In Your Own Sweet Way", "What's New/There Is No Greater Love", "Stella By Starlight", and "If I Should Lose You". Masahiko SatoBridge Over Troubled Water (2021 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Sony (Japan), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $54.99
A sweet little set from Japanese keyboardist Masahiko Sato – one that has him playing both acoustic and electric piano, amidst a set of larger backings from Jiro Inagaki and his Big Soul Media group! The sound here is really unique – a bit like some of the fuller American jazz sides at the end of the 70s, but cast out with colors, tones, and changes that are a fair bit different too. There's certainly funky and groovy elements to the album, but also a sound that's a bit more sophisticated too – not nearly as modern or out as some of Sato's other records, but with enough echoes of them to keep things interesting. Other players include Ryo Kawasaki on guitar and Shunzo Ohno on trumpet – and tracks include "Sniper's Snooze", "Serenity", "Guru", "Love & Peace", and "Somethin Goin On". LP, Vinyl record album

Masahiko Sato, Peter Warren, & Pierre FavreTrinity ... CD
Enja/Solid (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... $13.99
Japanese pianist Masahiko Sato is in a great trinity here – working with European players Peter Warren on bass and Pierre Favre on drums – on two side-long tracks that bristle with imagination! The music was recorded live at Studio 70 in Munich, and has the flow of some of the best free improvisation of the time – these boundless lines on piano from Sato, who's almost in a Cecil Taylor mode, but takes these nice pauses of introspection – while Favre does a great job of holding back, then kicking forth with energy – often in bursts that are nicely unified with Warren's bass. Titles include "Trinity" and "Far Trip". CD

✨✧ Somei SatohMandala Trilogy + 1 ... LP
WRWTFWW (Switzerland), Mid 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $38.99
A trio of works created by Japanese composer Somei Satoh in the mid 80s – all very much with the meditative qualities you might guess from the title! The songs here all build slowly – with a strongly resonant sonic space that seems to emerge slowly from a keyboard – some of the fascination with building things up in aural air that we loved in his earlier "Echoes", but taken here into more spiritual territory as deep electronic elements are mixed with occasional vocalizations, but all with a very rich, abstract texture – and more than enough organic elements to really set the work apart from clunkier efforts of the time. There's a moodiness here that's almost as if Popol Vuh were recording for 4AD – but with a quality that's better than those references might imply – and titles include "Mandala", "Mantra", and "Tantra". Also features the later piece "Mai", commissioned by the harpist Ayako Shinozaki! LP, Vinyl record album

Singers & Players/Creation Rebel/New Age SteppersDread Operator – From The On U Sound Archives (Leaps & Bounds/Threat To Creation/Lows & Highs/Wild Paarty Sounds Vol 1) (4CD set) ... CD
On-U Sound/Hot Milk (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 4CD ... $26.99 30.99
A fantastic package of work from the legendary On-U Sound label – four of the most important early albums on the label – from a time when the imprint was completely revolutionizing the influence of Jamaican music on the British scene! All of the albums were produced by Adrian Sherwood – who'd drank heavily of the sounds of Kingston in the 70s, but also grew up at a time when the more unique electronics and production styles of the post-punk years were holding sway – modes that he brought into play with the reggae sounds on the records, for one of the most unusual blends you can imagine! While The Clash and other UK artists just took on Jamaican music directly, Sherwood attempted to re-channel and shape it – at a level that not only offered respect and new showcases to reggae performers, but also then went back to have an influence i Jamaica too. The set features four full albums, all in tiny LP-styled covers – Leaps & Bounds by Singers & Players, Threat To Creation by Creation Rebel with New Age Steppers, Lows & Highs by Creation Rebel, and the classic compilation album Wild Paarty Sounds Vol 1 – one of the earliest, and most mindblowing On-U sound albums of all time! Jozef SkrzekViator (with bonus tracks) ... CD
GAD (Poland), Late 90s. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
The cover's almost got a 4AD sort of look to it – and that might be a good way to approach the music of Jozef Skrzek here – as it hits on the more meditative side of that British label in the second half of the 80s – as Jozef creates all these spare, keyboard-heavy instrumentals that have a nice current of darkness! In a more mainstream setting, the work might have gotten too polished and sentimental – but there's a nicely personal touch here, as of Skrzek is working post-cold wave, warming things up slightly, but never losing too much of that individual quality that would make things stand out. The CD features 20 tracks from the original recording – plus three bonus tracks too! CD

Candi StatonCandi Staton – The Fame Years ... CD
Fame/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
Excellent early work from Candi Staton – recorded for Rick Hall's famous Fame studios in Muscle Shoals! The tracks here are quite different than some of Candi's later, more famous work – very much in the best deep soul tradition of singers like Ann Sexton, Betty Harris, or Ann Peebles – really drenched in emotion and feeling, and recorded with rootsy backings that really bring out the best in her vocals. And sure, lots of folks love Candi for her later disco work – but honestly, this is the stuff that really moves us, and we're really happy to finally have some of it on CD! Plus, this set is the first time most of this work has been legitimately reissued – a fact that makes us even happier – and the CD features 26 tracks in all, with titles that include "Love Chain", "The Best Thing You Ever Had", "Evidence", "I'm Gonna Hold On", "The Thanks I Get For Loving You", "Freedom Is Beyond The Door", "In The Ghetto", "Sure As Sin", "How Can I Put Out The Flame", "Too Hurt To Cry", "Do Your Duty", and "What Would Become Of Me". Tony AllenThere Is No End ... CD
Blue Note, 2021. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
A very different album than some of the more recent efforts from the legendary drummer Tony Allen – and a set that shows that, as the title proclaims, there is no end to the creative talents of the mighty musician – even after he departed our planet! This set has Allen working with a variety of singers and MCs – serving up tunes that mix Afro Funk elements with a heavy dose of hip hop – thanks to contributions from a shifting lineup of guests that includes Sampa The Great, Tsunami, Nah Eeto, Zelooperz, Koreatown Oddity, Danny Brown, Marlowe, and others! Co-production and other instrumentation are from Vincent Taeger and Vincent Taurelle – working here strongly alongside core contributions from Allen, and clearly helping shape the creative sound of the record – on titles that include "Mau Mau", "Coonta Kinte", "Rich Black", "Gang On Holiday", "Stumbling Down", "Tres Magnifique", "Cosmosis", and "My Own". Luther AllisonLuther's Blues ... LP
Gordy, 1974. Near Mint- ... $24.99
One of the only blues records you'll ever find on Motown – and a mostly straight blues affair with a hard electric sound to it. The album's mostly in the early Alligator Records camp – but there's a few nice funky cuts, like "Now You Got It" and "Into My Life", which both have strong rhythm backing, and a smoother groove that kind of cuts the blues quotient a bit. That's a good thing for us, in case you couldn't tell! LP, Vinyl record album
