VariousATA Records – The Library Archive Vol 1 ... CD
ATA (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99
Not a standard sound library record, but one that's every bit as funky – thanks to a great ear for the right sort of 70s grooves from the folks at ATA Records! The music is contemporary, from the label that's been giving us some great funky 45s over the years – but the package has all the look and feel of a rare UK sound library record from decades back – and a sound that definitely matches that vibe too! These aren't fake funk tunes, or simple remix numbers that try to sound retro – they're just the sort of instrumental grooves you'd hear from Alan Hawkshaw, John Cameron, or other UK sound library giants – served up here by a nameless array of musicians, on great tracks that include "The Needle Nose", "Whack Slap & Blow", "Kaye Okay", "Wiretap", "Siren Sea", "Planet Nine", "Midnight Heist", "Nuclear Wind 1", and "Wigged Out". Der PlanDie Peitsche Des Lebens ... CD
Ata Tak/Bureau B (Germany), 1991. New Copy ... $16.99
The last album in the cool classic run of German gems from Der Plan – a group that few folks paid attention to at the time, but who really gave the world some wonderful electronic music in the post-punk years! These guys really distill all the best sides of the German electronic experiments of the 70s – serving things up in shorter tunes that are filled with unusual twists and turns, and which also have plenty of offbeat vocals and a nice sense of humor too – almost like little audio cartoons, with a quality that's far more long-lasting than some of their contemporaries! Despite the 1991 date of the record, the style here is every bit as great as the group's earliest music – and like most of their music, there's hardly any connection to a real epoch in sound – as the whole thing's so darn unique. Titles include "El Cigarro", "Kleiner Junge", "Wir Babies", "Vive Le Vie", "Alter Mann", "Es Werde Licht", and "Spiel 77". CD

Der PlanEs Ist Eine Fremde Und Seltsame Welt ... CD
Ata Tak/Bureau B (Germany), 1987. New Copy ... $16.99
The title translates to "it's a strange and peculiar world" – and there's maybe no better introduction to the mad electronic music of this wonderful German trio from the 80s! Der Plan were part of that special small slice of the German new wave – groups who didn't rely on darkness or angst to get their message across – but instead mixed together whimsical elements with musical experimentation – often in ways that were years ahead of their time! Imagine Kraftwerk scoring the music for cartoons, and you'd get part of the idea here – but that's hardly the start of the sonic delights within – as the album features short tracks in many different varieties – exploding with innovation at each twist and turn. Titles include "1 Mann 1 Ball", "Bleib Gold", "Kennen Sie Koln", "Frisch Verliebt", "Komm Zurick", "Get Out", and "Ich Hab Den Jordan Gesehn". CD

SorcerersIn Search Of The Lost City Of The Monkey God ... CD
ATA (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99
The Sorcerers return, and with a sound that's even deeper than before – a fantastic blend of funk and Ethiopian elements – but with a tightness that also resonates with some of the hipper European sound library work of the 70s! In fact, there's a mode here that's like those few special records where a funky sound library session might take on some more exotic currents – which is definitely what the Sorcerers do with a wicked blend of percussion and unusual woodwinds, which includes some work from Chip Wickham – who we also love from his own records too. Titles include "Overgrown Icons", "Downriver", "The People Of The Forest", "Crossing The Rope Bridge", "Summoning The Monkey God", "Who Is The Hunter Who Is The Prey", and "Escape From The Catacombs". ✨✧ Abstract OrchestraDilla ... LP
ATA (UK), 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
There's nothing abstract here – as the set's a fantastically-focused tribute to the late Jay Dee – put together in a style that's mostly jazz, but which also has some great vocal touches too! The music's roots are in hip hop, but the presentation here is awash in strong work on saxes, trumpet, and trombone – used over rhythms that are played live, and which have this warm glow that's like 70s jazz funk, filtered through the hop hop generation! Emphasis is on horn solos, but the set also features twin female singers – who provide some chorus vocals, and a warm link between the instrumental modes in a really great way. So maybe consider this both a soul and a jazz remake of the world of Dilla – and a great one too. Titles include "Welcome To Detroit/The Diary", "Dilla Mix 1", "Official/Fall In Love", "Love", "Angel"," King", "Two Can Win", "Raw Sh*t", "Workinonit", and "Stop". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ SorcerersSorcerers ... LP
ATA (UK), 2015. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A contemporary record, but one we'd rank right up there with the moodiest, most exotic African funk albums of the 70s – especially the gems we've discovered through the Ethiopiques series! These guys play in a style that certainly references Ethiopian reeds and keyboard work of the 70s, but with a groove that's even funkier too – an understanding of the possibilities of a deep funk combo, but expressed through a much richer, more organic vibe – so that nothing's ever forced or faked at all, and the music is wonderfully captivating throughout. Production is perfect for this sort of set – and titles include "Pinch Of The Death Nerve", "Viking Of 5th Avenue", "Cave Of Brahma", "Night Of The Sorcerer", and "Suur Toll". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Work Money DeathSpace in Which the Uncontrollable Unknown Resides – Can Be the Place from Which Creation Arises ... CD
ATA (UK), 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two wonderfully long-flowing tracks from this hip British group – very spiritual and slow-building, with energy that's very much in the best Alice Coltrane mode of the Impulse Records years! Tony Burkill is on tenor, and has this great mellow-burning approach – perfect for the slow-stepping modal groove that's delivered on piano, guitar, bass, and drums! Added horns, voice, harmonium, and other touches come in from time to time – but they never get in the way of the gentle majesty of the instrumentation at the core – the kind of music you'd want playing as you were going to meet the dawn at the start of a very righteous day. Titles include "Dawn" and "Dusk" – but both are very dawn-worthy! CD

ATA (UK), Mid 2010s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really great little collection – one that's maybe not as "early" as you'd guess from the title, given that most of these tracks are less than a decade old – but a set that really shows the great ear for a classic style that we love from the ATA label! Most of these tracks have a rock-solid deep funk mode – more 70s in their approach, and with a range that moves between cinematic funk, Ethio-influenced numbers, and a number of down-to-earth grooves – of the sort you might find on a vintage funky 45! Titles include "Cave Of Brahma" and "Elephant" by The Sorcerers, "The Flip" by Cleveland Freckleton, "Cookie Jar" by The Reverend Barrington Stanley, "Thought Forms" by Ivan Von Engelberger's Asteroid, "Sucker Punch" by The Mandatory Eight, "What Are We Made Of" by The Cadets, and "London Station" by The Lamplighters. ApplesApples Present – Kings ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2010. Used ... $4.99
The Apples present a pair of Kings – a nice little project the finds the nine piece collective in collaboration with masters of their styles – funk pioneer Fred Wesley on a quartet of tracks and Israeli percussion titan Schlomo Bar on 4 others! The Apples are such a stylistically sprawling, capable combo that the overall feel is quite cohesive and always funky – with Mr Wesley's trombone prominent and the classic funk styled "Howling With Fred", "In The Air", "Alright" and "Kings" – and Middle Eastern funk on featuring Schlomo Bar and the addition of oud player "Ilan Ban-Ami" on remaining tracks "Batash (Alwoojdi)", "Ani, Ata Wehoo", "Walking To The Palace" and "Banana Jam" (the latter sans oud). ✨✧ Antonio AdolfoViralata ... LP
Artezanal/Far Out (UK), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 29.98
Fantastic stuff – and one of the greatest records ever by Brazilian keyboardist Antonio Adolfo! The album was recorded at the end of the 70s, and has a sound that's a lot like the best fusion work by Azymuth – a great mix of jazz and funk, plus more dynamic Brazilian elements – all wrapped together in a way that a rare few hybrids do this well! There's great keyboards right up front in the mix – and the backing has some tight percussion that crackles along and gives the album a heavy bottom and a great groove. The album was originally only issued on the tiny Artezanal label – but it feels like a lost gem from the classic funk years at Fantasy Records – internationally funky, far past just a Brazilian music gem. Titles include the massive break cut "Cascavel", plus other nice tracks like "Viralata", "A Marcha", "Assanhada", "Vermelhinho", and "Brincadeira Em Mi Bemol". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the classic early Tommy Boy twelves – with the great Gwen McCrae sample from "Funky Sensation", and an excellent performance by Bam and the Jazzy 5. Curtis AmyKatanga (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Pacific Jazz/Blue Note, 1963. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 34.99 On June 4, 2021
A stellar set from one of the most underrated reed players of all time – a brilliant bit of searching soul jazz, cut at a time when Curtis Amy was leaving behind his Texas roots for the new sounds of the Coltrane generation! The album's quite different than the organ and tenor dates that Amy had previously cut with Paul Bryant – and instead, is put together with a nascent spiritualism that's really wonderful – a sound that definitely lives up to the bold title and cover image, with lots of modal moments in the rhythms! The group features some equally under-acknowledged geniuses – including trumpeter Dupree Bolton, pianist Jack Wilson, and guitarist Ray Crawford – all coming together perfectly with Amy's work on tenor and soprano sax. The best tunes here are originals by the group members – including "Lonely Woman" (not by Ornette), "Katanga", "Native Land", and "Amyable". LP, Vinyl record album

Joe BataanAfrofilipino (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Salsoul/Octave (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $24.99
An amazing crossover moment of the 70s Latin scene! During the 60s Joe Bataan had been experimenting with the many different mode of Latin Soul – crossing over styles in a way that not only reflected his complicated roots, but which also tried to break Latin music out of the small uptown market it was getting locked into. On the album before this one, Joe coined the term Salsoul, which he used to describe his unique mix of salsa and soul – which on this record also gets a bit of an infusion of disco, which was a brilliant move by Joe, and broke the album out of the ghetto, onto dancefloors around the world. The centerpiece of the record is Joe's funky cover of Gil Scott-Heron's classic "The Bottle" – but just about every track is great, and there's loads of excellent titles like "Chico & The Man", "Women Don't Want To Love Me", "X-Rated Symphony", "When You're Down (Funky Mambo)", and remakes of older Latin Soul tunes "What Good Is A Castle" and "Ordinary Guy". CD features bonus tracks – "What Good Is A Castle (parts 1 & 2)", "Ordinary Guy", and "Women Don't Want To Love Me". CD

The format here is very up-close and personal – specially-selected songs that Burrell plays beautifully – almost always with that single-line style that bristles with great tones and color – backed by a mellow quintet that includes Justo Almario on tenor and flute, Tom Ranier on piano, Tony Dumas on bass, and Clayton Cameron on drums. Kenny introduces many of the cuts on the set – and titles include versions of "Killer Joe", "Little Sunflower", "Make Someone Happy", "Sunset & The Mockingbird", "The Summer Knows", "Lament", and "Chitlins Con Carne". A much-loved album by The Charlatans – or Charlatans UK, if you live in the US like us – a set that's filled with the sorts of well-crafted, catchy tunes they do so well – kicked up with occasional beats, ala the UK scene at the time! These guys handled the blend better than most, and the album ages better than most of the time – kind of a post-4AD, post-Factory vibe finding its way into the mainstream – on titles that include "Weirdo", "Can't Even Be Bothered", "Tremelo Song", "Page One", "Ignition", "I Don't Want To See The Lights", "Not Even The Rain", and "Subtitle". Da Lata & OthersRemixes ... CD
Palm (UK), 2002. Used ... $4.99
A collection of remixes from one of the greatest groups going! Da Lata have one of the strongest sounds going – a mixture of Brazilian rhythms and modern production, steeped in classic jazz influences, and the rich sense of history brought to the group by DJ Patrick Forge. And when they remix a track, they completely transform it – unabashedly bringing their sound into play, in the manner of work by Jazzanova, 4 Hero, or some of the other rare remixers who really open a track up. This set features 14 remixes by the group – mostly pulled from import and out of print singles, brought together to form a full album that's as important a picture of the group as any full album they might record. Titles include "Sound Of The Samba" by Victor Davies, "Life" by Luciano, "Berimbal/Capoeira" by Grupo Batuque, "Pode Ficar" by Arto Lindsay, "Starlight In Daden" by Ekova, "August Day Song" by Bebel Gilberto, "Softcore Surge" by Sly & Robbie, "Male Debale" by Virginia Rodrigues, "Beng Beng Beng" by Femi Kuti, and "Pondeiro Deiro" by Carlinhos Brown – plus "Golden" and "Ponteio" by Da Lata themselves! Vanessa Da MataBicicletas Bolos E Outras Alegrias ... CD

Always-lovely work from Vanessa Da Mata – a contemporary Brazilian vocalist, and one who sings with plenty of soul! The album features some great work from Kassin – who produced, plays bass, and clearly had a hand in shaping the sound of the set – giving the whole thing lots of those hip twists and turns you'll find in music issued under his own name – or with Domenico and Moreno Veloso! There's a cool undercurrent to many of the songs – hard to describe accurately, but almost a bubbling darkness next to sweeter sounds on the top – nicely off-balance, in a way that really keeps things interesting. Titles include "Fiu Fiu", "Te Amo", "Va", "Moro Longe", "Meu Aniversario", "Ve Se Fica Bem", and "A Masoquista E O Fugitivo". CD

An organ bossa classic from the legendary Eumir Deodato – one of his strongest albums from his early years in Brazil! There's a very jazzy feel to the set all the way through – thanks to a tightly arranged group that not only features the organ and percussion you might expect from such a date, but which also features some great horn work as well! Trombone, tenor, and baritone sax all get in some nice licks – and Deodato's organ cooks wonderfully throughout, often with a quick-stepping bossa jazz sound that really keeps things lively. Fabio Fabor (Fabio Borgazzi)Pape Satan (180 gram colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Hard/Beatball (Korea), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 34.98
A really dark little sound library album – but maybe that's what you would have guessed from a record that has satan in the title! The music here is almost a stripped-down, compressed approach to some of the territory that Goblin were bringing to their early soundtracks – lots of keyboards, guitar, and other electric elements – used in styles that move between spare and moody, to more compressed and intense – the latter especially on songs that pick up the rhythms a bit, but in a way that's far from the more familiar post-disco grooves of the Italian slasher scene. Fabio Fabor wrote and performed the entire set – with instrumentation that includes Fender Rhodes, Arp, and vocoder – on titles that include "Dies Irae", "Stige", "Trillo De Diavolo", "Dalle Sirene", "Diabolic Love", "Caronte", "Segno Di Fuoco" "Ad Inferos", and "Acheron". Freddie Gibbs & MadlibPinata ... LP
Madlib Invazion, 2014. New Copy 2LP ... $19.99 21.98
Streetwise raps from Freddie Gibbs, backed by inventive production from Madlib – here on one of the best records yet on 'Lib's own Madlib Invazion imprint! If you'll forgive us a little bit of repetition – because we KNOW we've written this before – there's just something extra riveting about Madlib's production work for straight shooting, street lingo slinging, no nonsense MCs. The freewheeling inspiration and bottomless depth of unpredictable sample funk is there, as always. It's leaner, tighter and with a thicker backdrop of beats. Gibbs is sharply on point throughout here, and if it seems like an oddball pairing at first glance, rest assured, these guys work GREAT together. Guests include Danny Brown – who drops some top shelf wordplay of his own on "High" – plus the Wu legend Raekwon on "Bomb", Domo Genius & Earl Sweatshirt on "Robes", Domo Genius, G-Whiz, Mac Miller and more on the title cut, and more. Other titles include "Supplier", "Scarface", "Deeper", "Harold's", "Thuggin'", "Real" and "Uno". LP, Vinyl record album

Veritano (Japan), 1972. Used ... $24.99
The return of Lee Van Cleef's Sabata – presented here in a soundtrack that's even groovier than the music from the first film! The title tune is especially wonderful – a killer soundtrack groove with a mix of English lyrics and scatting vocals from I Cantori Moderni – easily one of the grooviest tunes the group ever recorded! Other tunes have a groovy undercurrent too – romping basslines and piano bits, and weird strings and sounds folded together beautifully – making for music that's as compelling as the movie, even when heard far away from the images on the screen. This reissue includes a few previously unreleased bonus tracks – making for 18 tracks in all! CD

A dreamy little record, and one that's every bit as warm and sunny as its cover – served up here in a mix of 70s Japanese fusion and soundtrack modes, with a relatively straight vibe overall! There's some of the whimsy of the artists' other work, but nicely filtered into modes that showcase their growing participation in the city pop years – but always with a kind of understated quality that makes the whole thing so great! There's a nicely laidback vibe to the whole thing, which breaks a bit when a jazzier moment comes into the mix – and titles are all in Japanese, or we'd tell you more about the record. Fumio ItabashiLife & Live – Watarase ... DVD
Ultra Vybe (Japan), 2011. New Copy ... $4.99
A really unusual performance from Japanese pianist Fumio Itabashi – who returns here to Watarase, a site that inspired his most famous album in the 70s! Itabashi plays here outdoors – a really amazing setting for a grand piano – yet his work on the instrument is ever bit as bold and powerful as when it's captured in the closeness of the studio – although maybe taking off with even more inspiration from nature, which is always something that Fumio brings to his unique combination of lyrical lines and magical flow! The performance runs for approximately 63 minutes, and all other notes are in Japanese, or else we'd tell you more. DVD

A really fresh take on the music of John Coltrane – not just because Mayuko Katakura is a pianist, not a saxophonist – but also because she's got a really fresh, original approach to the tunes! You'll certainly recognize most of the numbers, but they're taken in different ways – sometimes really opened up in different directions, with inventive rhythms from Takumi Awaya on bass and Noritaka Tanaka on drums – musicians who sometimes swing, sometimes step back and let the piano direct the proceedings! Titles include versions of "Resolution", "Naima", "Equinox", "Up Gainst The Wall", "Love", "Bessie's Blues", and "Wise One". CD

No Business (Lithuania), 2021. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
We're not entirely sure if the set was recorded underground, but there's definitely a sense of resonance that comes through in the performance – this echoey space that just seems to further intertwine the improvisations of the members of the group! Katarsis4 is an all-horn group – with Arminas Bizys on alto and baritone, Kazimieras Jusinskas on soprano and alto, Algridas Janonis on alto and hornpipe, and Danielus Pancerovas on baritone and alto – a blend of horns that makes for an amazing array of sounds and tones throughout the one long improvised performance on the set – sometimes all tied together, almost harmonizing – other times confronting each other in the open space of the performance – really beautiful, and in ways that are quite different than standard saxophone quartet material! There's an equal ear her for sonic possibilities as there is for music – and that makes for a hauntingly beautiful record throughout. CD

A wonderfully groovy set from the early 80s Japanese scene – a record that's maybe got a lot more cultural strands criss-crossing than some of its contemporaries! The cover looks a bit psychedelic, and the sound is maybe a bit too – but with the sorts of early 80s keyboards and electronics that you'd expect from the date – all produced by the group, but recorded by Seigen Ono with a really wonderful balance of elements! Julie Powell sings on five of the album's tracks – which further helps set the work apart from the rest, especially as many of the lyrics are Armenian! Titles include "Sokokara", "Shisen", "Shonen", "Sora Ni Mau Maboroshi", and "Shinzo No Tobira". LP, Vinyl record album

MatadorsMatadors (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Supraphon/Sony (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... $32.99
Czech rock from the end of the 60s – played by a groovy group with strong beat-heavy tendencies! Although they hail from behind the iron curtain, The Matadors sing in English – working with instrumentation that's heavy on the Hammond, and clearly influenced by mod work from the UK a few years before – especially given that there's a bit of a subcurrent of 60s soul than runs through some of these tunes! There's a near-perfect British sound going on here – but one that has some slightly odd twists and turns too – like seeing the Brit beat group years through a strange sort of prism, one that further abstracts their own interpretation of American musical influences. Titles include "Bad Bad Bird"," My Girl", "Get Down From The Tree", "Shotgun", "You'll Be Mine", "I Just Hope", and "Hate Everything Except Of Hatter". CD features four more bonus tracks too! CD

Franco MicalizziGenova A Mano Armata ... CD
Digitmovies (Italy), 1976. New Copy ... $19.99
Classic cop soundtrack work from the Italian scene of the 70s – a funky nugget that rivals our own American police scores of the time, but one that also has some darker elements too! The upbeat tunes here often feature lots of keyboards, funky bass, and guitar – quick-tempo grooves that move with lots of fast action – offset by some mellower numbers that mix in spookier strings and some creepier orchestrations, of the sort you might hear in an Ennio Morricone soundtrack. Micalizzi's always been one of the best Italian composers for crime/cop work like this – and the score is right up there with his best work – beautifully presented in this package that features 17 cuts from the film! Beat (Italy), 1976. New Copy ... $19.99 28.98
A driving Italian soundtrack from the height of the cop/crime years – done with really full arrangements by Franco Micalizzi, in a way that easily rivals some of the best American work of the genre in the 70s! Most of the orchestrations are quite bold – upbeat rhythms with basslines punching up the bottom, and horns overflowing on the top – all in a brashly brassy style that really fits the high level of action in the film! Other numbers get a bit more mellow, but not in a spooky, atonal way – more in a slightly sweet quality that almost has slight 70s erotic undertones. A few other tracks almost get clubby at points – mixing guitar, keyboards, and snapping rhythms into some great instrumental grooves that might have been right at home on the dancefloor in New York. Reissue features 24 tracks in all – including "Too Much Nosy", "Hard Falling", "The Child & The Sister", "A Dirty Trick", "The Criminal Gang", "Detecting The Boss", "Tiny Armed Suite", and "Damned Bricks". Charles MingusJazz In Detroit – Strata Concert Gallery (5CD set) ... CD
Strata/BBE (UK), 1973. New Copy 5 CDs ... $39.99
A fantastic live performance from Charles Mingus – recorded in Detroit, with a slightly unusual group – and done with the more open, freewheeling quality that grace his live recordings of the early 60s! The set was recorded at the Strata Gallery – and has some of the deeper spiritual currents of the work on Detroit's Strata label – as the quintet burns beautifully with contributions from Don Pullen on piano, John Stubblefield on tenor, Joe Gardner on trumpet, and the great Roy Brooks on drums! It's interesting both to hear Mingus without Dannie Richmond on drums – and Brooks at a time when he was at his most righteous – and the pairing really seems to bring a lot of the best energy out of the other players too. The super-expanded set features material from a few nights of performance, with a few alternate takes – and titles include "The Man Who Never Sleeps", "Pithecanthropus Erectus", "Peggy's Blue Skylight", "Orange Was The Color Of Her Dress Then Blue Silk", "Dizzy Profile", and "C Jam Blues". Italy meets Australia – in a lovely set of grooves written by Piero Piccioni for this little-seen Alberto Sordi film from 1971! The sound is as sunny as you'd expect – with the Piccioni bossa groove used to set the scene for postwar Australia – sometimes coming across with lighter, livelier tones, sometimes getting a bit lusher in the more serious parts – but always coming across with a great Italian soundtrack sparkle! There's some wonderful Italian bossa bits on the set – skipping out with some snapping snare bits, topped off by warm horn passages and some great use of electric keys! Constellation (Canada), 2019. New Copy ... $12.99 14.98
The fantastic fourth installment in the Coin Coin project by Matana Roberts – issued quite a few years after the third, but well worth the wait! Matana recently described herself as an "arts adventurer" – and that's a pretty great term for her role on the record, which is far more than jazz – because Roberts uses the format as a springboard to explore layers of culture and identity, both historical and personal – as she mixes spoken and sung passages with searing solos on alto and clarinet! The core group also features some really bold guitar work from both Sam Shalabi and Hanna Marcus – the latter of whom also adds in some fiddle and accordion – alongside bass from Nicolas Caloia, and a mixture of drums, vibes, and other percussion from Ryan Sawyer. The record's got a very special sound – in the same "beyond jazz" territory of recent gems from the International Anthem label – and the group also features guest work from Steve Swell on trombone and Ryan White on vibes. Titles include "Wild Fire Bare", "Piddling", "Shoes Of Gold", "Fit To Be Tied", "As Far As The Eye Can See", "Trail Of The Smiling Sphinx", and "How Bright They Shine". CD

Trova/Altercat (Germany), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... About May 25, 2021
One of the coolest records we've ever heard from this legendary Argentine pianist – a set that has Jorge Lopez Ruiz playing lots of Fender Rhodes, and mixing it in with both rootsy Latin percussion and a number of other keyboards too! The set's almost a South American version of some of Herbie Hancock's work with the Headhunters – with more traditional percussion passages in the mix, but blended with sounds that include Arp and mini-moog too – which gives the whole thing a criss-crossing vibe that alternates from the surface of the planet to the deeper ranges of the cosmos! Ruiz is wonderful throughout – often very spacious, in a thoughtful way that only makes each note have more power – and titles include "La Hora De La Sed Maldita", "Eterna Prescencia", "Mira Tu", "El Viaje De Dumpty", "Balewada", and "Para Nostros Solamente". A dramatic soundtrack for L'Armata Bracaleone – a mid 60s Italian fantasy action film that starred Vittorio Gassman in a strange setting that was sort of a twisted version of the Middle Ages! The tunes on the set are often orchestral and mood-setting – but a few of the more standout numbers have a driving, chanting approach – to suit the more action-based scenes of the film. There's clearly a comedic current to the movie at times, but this doesn't always come through in the music, which is maybe at its best when most dramatic! ✨✧ Ryuichi Sakamoto & Kazumi WatanabeTokyo Joe ... LP
Columbia/Better Days (Japan), 1982. New Copy ... $29.99 39.99
An unusual collection of tracks from Japanese pop genius Ryuichi Sakamoto – all material that features fusion wizard Kazumi Watanabe on guitar – himself sounding very different than on his straighter jazz albums! The sound here is maybe a bit more dynamic and driving than some of Sakamoto's other work – and we're not sure, but the album appears to collect tracks from other sessions, and add in new material too – particularly the very cool title track, which is a version of a tune by Bryan Ferry! Akiko Yano helped write some of the material too – and titles include "The End Of Asia", "Tokyo Joe", "I'll Be There", "E Day Project", "Akasaka Moon", and "The River Must Flow". LP, Vinyl record album
(Great Japanese pressing – with obi!)
