✨✧ Angelo Noce SantoroFor You ... CD
ANS/Pharaway Sounds (Spain), 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful Latin-styled jazz – not really New York or Cuban, but also not Brazilian either – and instead this really wonderful hybrid of sounds that's cooked up by guitarist Angelo Noce Santoro – a player with roots in psych and prog! This album's not any of that, though – and instead has this beautiful breezy vibe that reminds us of some of the best Brazilian fusion projects coming from German or Scandinavia in the 70s – or maybe like some of the best albums of artists like Jayme Marques or Agustin Pereyra Lucena! Santoro's definitely an artist at a level that unique – and his own guitar and bass blend wonderfully with a second acoustic guitar, drums, percussion, and some great jazzy flute – on titles that include "Arroz Cubano", "For You", "Theme From", "Raindance (part 1)", and "Tapajos". ✨✧ Tom RappStardancer ... LP
Blue Thumb, 1972. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautiful music from singer Tom Rapp – probably best known as the lead voice behind Pearls Before Swine, but a hell of a solo act on his own! The work here follows in the same moody, melancholic territory as the best ESP sides from Pearls Before Swine – but there's also a bit tighter feel too – not one that's commercial, but just very well put-together – with a vibe that's a bit like some of the best early Leonard Cohen material for Columbia. Rapp's got an extremely unique sound in his vocals – which makes the tunes come across with an eerie quality that goes well beyond their simple lyrical content – and the backing mixes familiar folk elements with undercurrents of percussion and bits of jazzy phrasing – a bit like you might find on some mellower late 60s moments from Donovan. Titles include "Stardancer", "Marshall", "Les Ans", "The Baptist", "Tiny Song", "Summer Of 55", and "For The Dead In Space". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has light wear and a cut corner.)

✨✧ Francis LaiA Man & A Woman: 20 Years Later ... LP
Finnadar, 1986. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
A pretty great soundtrack from Francis Lai – despite the time of the recording! The score is Lai's update of his classic soundtrack to A Man & A Woman, done for Claude Lelouch's 1986 film – A Man & A Woman, 20 Years Later. The whole concept – of both the film and the soundtrack – is a bit hokey, but it really hooks us, and still stands nicely with the best of Lai's soundtrack work. The music is steeped in themes borrowed from the first score, and features vocals on one track by Pierre Barouh, plus others by Richard Berry and Liliane Davis. A few numbers are a bit tinny, but overall there's less 80s production than you might think. Titles include "20 Ans Deja", "Un Homme Et Une Femme", "Aujourd'hui C'Est Toi", "A L'Ombre De Nous", and "Cent Ans Eja". LP, Vinyl record album

Mose AllisonTransfiguration Of Hiram Brown ... LP
Columbia, 1960. Very Good+ ... $9.99
One of Mose Allison's most sophisticated album, and one that has him going way past his usual "folksy jazzy" style, into a realm that touches on Monk-like modernism! The whole first side is Allison's extended "Hiram Brown" suite, which mixes vocal and instrumental passages in an extremely haunting way. The flipside features shorter versions of standards – some vocal, some instrumental – but all with more of a moderist sound than his earlier Prestige recordings – a great step forward for one of the most unique talents in jazz! LP, Vinyl record album

Jim BakerMore Questions Than Answers ... CD
Delmark, 2005. New Copy ... $1.99 13.99
A really beautiful solo debut from Jim Baker – a pianist who, by the time of this set, had already worked with some of the key avant talents on the Chicago jazz scene, and also had leant his talents to other musical projects too! And while Baker's maybe best known for his work in Ken Vandermark's Territory Band, he sounds completely different here – playing solo piano and a bit of analogue electronics, in a way that's surprisingly sensitive, but also angular and very modern overall – a really careful balance of modes that unlocks all these subtle feelings in Baker's work which might have been missed in another context. The piano work is especially wonderful – and almost puts Jim in a legacy of sensitive modernists that would include Steve Kuhn, Keith Jarrett, and Denny Zeitlin. Titles include "Hobbsian's Choice", "Grey Comedy", "Tolled Deadpan", "Tocsin Du Jour", and "Watching The Interstate". CD

A set of New Orleans-styled jazz, recorded in the wake of Hurricane Katrina as a benefit performance – but one that's also performed by a relatively international trio, recording up in Toronto! Australian trad jazz legend Bob Barnard is on cornet – blowing in a lean, open setting that features the piano of John Sheridan and drums of Don Vickery – no other instrumentation, which means plenty of room for solos throughout! Titles include "That's My Home", "Mobile Bay", "King Of The Zulus", "Darkness On The Delta", "Milenberg Joys", "Louisiana Daybreak", and "Winin Boy Blues". CD

Pastor TL Barrett & Youth For Christ ChoirI Shall Wear A Crown (Like A Ship/Do Not Pass Me By Vols 1 & 2/I Found The Answer/Singles & Sermons) (5CD box set) ... CD
Numero, Early 70s. New Copy 5CD ... $35.99 41.99
A tremendous package of work from this overlooked soul and gospel legend – four classic albums, plus other rare material too – all packaged with detailed notes in the wonderful Numero Group style! First up is Like A Ship Without A Sail – a gospel album from Pastor TL Barrett, but one that's gone on to legendary status among funk and soul collectors over the years! Barrett works here with his Youth For Christ Choir – a south side ensemble that's filled with genuine spirit and passion, aimed towards lofty ideals – but set up with some deep secular soul production touches and instrumentation that keep things razor sharp throughout! The album was supervised by Chess Records sax player and arranger Gene Barge – with other Chess players Richard Evans and Phil Upchurch on the sessions too – and the music is filled with raw drums, heavy bass, and lots of great organ lines! Next is Do Not Pass Me By Vol 1 – an album that's got a nice balance between intimate soul numbers and larger tracks that have the whole Mount Zion Baptist Church along for support! The set's definitely got the strongly soulful vibe of Barrett's Like A Ship album – a strong ear for the best secular elements of the time, which are used liberally in the instrumental backing – to really send home the message in the music! Most tunes really soft-pedal the religion, and instead go for an overall feel that really crosses over to regular soul music. Next is the great second volume of Do Not Pass Me By – like the first, the product of a wonderfully spiritual setting on Chicago's south side – music created in the church, but with all the same vibe as the hippest secular soul coming from the Windy City in the early 70s! The set does a great job of alternating strong lead singers with the rest of the group – a bit like Voices Of East Harlem, but with more of a larger ensemble feel – and there's some really wonderful moments on the record throughout – even a bit of funk amidst the more righteous soul-styled tunes. I Found The Answer is one of the biggest-circulating albums from this fantastic figure in Chicago gospel – a unique set done for the Gospel Truth subsidiary of Stax Records, but a set served up in the same blend of soul-based inspirations as some of TL Barrett's indie label releases back home in the Windy City! Plus, the package features a full album of Singles & Sermons – rare non-LP material by this seminal figure in both soul and spiritual music. CD

Count BasieCount Basie & The Kansas City Seven (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1962. Used ... $18.99
Stripped-down Count Basie from the start of the 60s – a great little set that has the Count working with some of the best players from his larger group, in a session of even more intimate small combo material! The sounds here echo the Basie groove of the earlier years, but the overall presentation is a fair bit more modern – nicely syncopated with that sense of space discovered by Basie in the 50s – and perfectly interpreted by players who include Thad Jones on trumpet, Frank Wess on flute, Frank Foster on tenor, Freddie Green on guitar, Eric Dixon on flute, and Basie himself on both piano and organ – the latter of which is quite a treat! Titles include "Secrets", "Count's Place", "I Want A Little Girl", "Tally Ho Mr Basie", "Senator Whitehead", "Whatcha Talkin", and "Shoe Shine Boy". CD

Bob B Soxx & The Blue JeansZip A Dee Doo Dah ... CD
South Bay (Japan), 1963. Used ... $11.99 14.99
One of the first great projects from genius producer Phil Spector – a soul trio that features one guy and two gals, all working in a style that's a virtual blueprint for countless pop to come! The album updates the older doo wop mode to a sweeter 60s style – focusing mostly on the girls in the lead, and using Bob's vocals mostly to underpin, and create a nice bottom in the harmonies. But while the vocals are great, the overall production is maybe even better – all-star handling at the Gold Star studios, with Phil on production, Jack Nitzsche on arrangements, and sharp backing from the Wrecking Crew at their prime. Boogie Down ProductionsBy All Means Necessary (180 gram orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
Jive/Vinyl Me Please, 1988. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 39.99
The major label debut of Boogie Down Productions – a record that's got quite a striking cover for the time – one that's drenched in political power, and is hardly the sort of fake gangster image that so many other rappers would use to grace the covers of their albums! Here, KRS-One really hones his craft – delivering a rock-solid album that's already a step ahead of his classic debut Criminal Minded – full of songs whose themes still resonate strongly today – not that KRS failed to change the world with his music, but just that his concerns were years ahead of their time! Production is turned up a few notches than before too – all the best uses of the Jive Records money, while not watering down the songs or going for a crossover hit – and titles include "My Philosophy", "Ya Slippin'", "Jimmy", "Illegal Business", "Stop The Violence", "Nervous", "I'm Still #1", "Part Time Suckers", "T'Cha - T'Cha", and "Necessary". A brilliant soul album! That's right, we said SOUL album! Bowie was at the height of his Ziggy Stardust fame when this one was recorded – a drastic left-turn in styles, forged during a point in his American tour when he could take a break, head to Philly, plug in at the Sigma Sound Studios, and come up with some fantastic little soul tunes, thanks to help from Luther Vandross! The album sparkles with the best sound of Luther's early work – and you'll hear more than a bit of Luther's work on his own, and his tunes with Gregg Diamond on the set. Features the sublime tracks "Win", "Fascination", "Right", "Somebody Up There Likes Me", and "Can You Hear Me" – as well as the hits "Young Americans" and "Fame". LP, Vinyl record album

"Stone Fox" is the real winner here – an instrumental tune with some all-out bluesy guitar, riffing and rasping over a fast vamp by the band, sounding more like a Chicago Chess number than James' usual mid 60s bag! "Kansas City" is, of course, a version of the famous Lieber/Stoller hit – done here by James in a nice deep soul style that makes us like the cut more than we might! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Ebos/Numero, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 24.99
"Now you can experience transcendental consciousness without spending 10 years in a Tibetan monastery" – or so the liner notes proclaim – a pretty great description of what's bound to happen after making your way through this very trippy album from the early 70s! The set's essentially a set of long electric guitar solos – played by Wilburn Burchette on his self-created "impro guitar" – recorded with lots and lots of echo, and maybe a bit of distortion too – so that the long, cyclic lines ring out beautifully – with every bit of the hypnotic feel you might expect! The whole thing's almost like an electric version of some of John Fahey's longform solo work – and titles include "Dawn Of Awakening", "Regeneration", "Transformation", "Introversion", and "Piercing The Psychic Heart". ✨✧ ChansonChanson ... LP
Ariola, 1978. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A sweet little set from Chanson – a duo formed by a funky bassist and guitarist – who both bring a really strong focus to the rhythms on this set! The pair also get lots of great studio help from top-shelf talents on the instrumentation – key jazzy session players, as well as a number of members of Earth Wind & Fire – who seem to support the same soulful balance between funk and club of that classic group, taken to slightly more of a disco space by Chanson! The instrumentation is key – very well-crafted, and clearly the first element of the tunes before the vocals – although those are great too, and really serve as icing on the cake! Titles include "Don't Hold Back", "Why", "Did You Ever", "All The Time You Need", "I Love You More", and "I Can Tell". LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige/Swingville, 1960/1961. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $4.99
A 2-fer set from the 70s – with 2 great older albums from Buck & Buddy! First up is the self-titled Buck & Buddy – beautiful blowing from Buck Clayton and Buddy Tate – captured here in the relaxed, easy-going setting of the Swingville label! The album's got a lot more charm than some of Clayton's sides for Columbia – a bit more mellow, with the kind of after hours feel that lets players like these show their strongest suits on their instruments. Clayton plays trumpet, Tate tenor – and rhythm is from the trio of Sir Charles Thompson on piano, Gene Ramey on bass, and Mousie Alexander on drums. Titles include "High Life", "Birdland Betty", "Can't We Be Friends", and "Kansas City Nights". Next Is Buck & Buddy Blow The Blues – a romping little session from Buck Clayton and Buddy Tate – served up in a looser, more relaxed setting than the former's albums for Columbia, and a slightly more swing-based mode than the latter's dates for Chess! Both horn players get plenty of room to solo in the open-ended Swingville mode – Buck on trumpet and Buddy on both tenor and clarinet – and the group's a nice one too, since Sir Charles Thompson's playing piano, Gene Ramey's on bass, and Gus Johnson's on drums. Titles include "Blue Creek", "Blue Breeze", "Blue Ebony", "Rompin At Red Bank", and "Dallas Delight". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Chick CoreaInner Space (Tones For Joans Bones plus bonus tracks) ... LP
Atlantic, Late 60s/1973. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99
An expanded version of Chick Corea's amazing Tones For Joan's Bones album from the late 60s – presented here with some key bonus tracks as well! The core album is amazing stuff – quite different than Chick Corea's 70s work, and a set that's filled with heavy soul jazz and Latin influences! Chick's coming off of years of work in Latin bands, and in smaller soul jazz combos, and his writing here is a mix of the freer style that would later become too free, with the rootsier elements of his background. The players on the record include Woody Shaw on trumpet, Joe Farrell on tenor and flute, Steve Swallow on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums – and all tracks are long, with a sweeping, searching, soulful sound. Titles include a beautiful rendition of Chick's "Litha", which he also recorded with Stan Getz on Sweet Rain, plus two other nice originals – "Tones For Joan's Bones" and "Straight Up And Down". This set also includes two numbers left off the original release, "Inner Space" and "Guijira" – recorded at the same time, and a wonderful expansion of the already-great set. Added to the record are two more Chick-centered tracks from the Hubert Laws album Laws' Cause – "Windows" and "Trio For Flute, Bassoon & Piano" – arranged by Corea, and featuring him on piano and Hubert Laws on flute. Quite an unusual date for vocalist Jimmy Witherspoon – one that has him singing with the group of Wilbur De Paris, in a mode that's a lot more trad than any of Jimmy's other records from the time! Turns out, that amazing voice is perfect for the setting – and Witherspoon really sounds wonderful here – ringing out with a full, rich style that most other trad male singers would never attempt – recorded beautifully for the session with top-shelf Atlantic fidelity, too – and more than a few echoes of their R&B approach in the studio! The group features Wilbur De Paris on trombone, Sidney De Paris on cornet, Omer Simeon on clarinet, and Sonny White on piano – and titles include "Careless Love", "Trouble In Mind", "Lotus Blossom", "Big Fine Girl", "Good Rollin Blues", and "When The Sun Goes Down". ✨✧ Iancu DumitrescuAnsamblul Hyperion ... CD
Electrecord/Edition Modern, 1981. New Copy ... $11.99 14.99
Pure genius from Hungarian composer Iancu Dumitrescu – an artist who steps forward from the French electroacoustic experiments of previous decades, and some of the Italian work of the mid 70s – into territory that's full of rich sonic exploration that's very much his own! Dumitrescu works with his Ansamblul Hyperion – a lineup of mostly acoustic players who are blended with electronics at points – a mix of very cool percussion elements, plus flute, clarinet, bassoon, viola, cello, and bass – plus piano at one point too. The music has an organic sensibility that somehow makes each moment feel "right", and never forced – even as the players move into very experimental territory over the course of the longer pieces. The album features four works in all – "Sincronie", "Rota", "Combinatii In Cercuri", and "Movemur Et Sumus". CD

Bill EvansAnother Time – The Hilversum Concert ... CD
Resonance, 1968. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Amazing work from one of the most inventive trios ever led by pianist Bill Evans – a fantastic group that features the young Eddie Gomez on bass and the mighty Jack DeJohnette on drums! Both players would develop into strong leaders of their own in later years – but here, on this unreleased material from 1968, it's amazing to hear them already shaping sounds with a new sense of freedom – that mixture of complexity and lyricism that Bill brought to his groups from the end of the 50s onwards – delivered here in the hands of musicians who'd both take that spirit, and run with it even more strongly in years to come. Gomez is no stranger to Evans, and had already recorded often with his piano – one of the most sublime pairings of the 60s – but DeJohnette really brings something special to the group – maybe more of a special sonic range at times that allows him to stand out, yet never distract. As with other Resonance releases of this nature, the material is issued for the first time ever – beautifully produced by Dutch radio in June of 1968, and presented here as an extended set with tracks that include "Very Early", "You're Gonna Hear From Me", "Five", "Turn Out The Stars", "Nardis", "Emily", "Who Can I Turn To", and "Alfie". Riverside, 1961. Used ... $3.99
One of Bill Evans' landmark sessions with the young bassist Scott LaFaro – a player who made key contributions on every record he touched, then left this earth far too soon in his career! The live session's a perfect demonstration of the way that the Evans trio format not only re-worked the use of the piano in jazz, but also the bass and drums as well – as LaFaro's deeply evocative playing is paired with the equally fresh drum work of Paul Motian – heard here at his youthful early best, before some of his contributions to jazz had become cliche in the hands of other players. Pulled from the afternoon and evening sessions caught live at the Village Vanguard on June 25, 1961 – and titles include longish takes on "Solar", "Jade Visions", and "Gloria's Step". CD

Columbia, 1971. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A pretty sublime album from Bill Evans – one that has him playing both Fender Rhodes and Steinway, overdubbed together, for an effect that's laidback and completely wonderful! The Fender Rhodes was a natural choice for Evans – given his fluid lyrical style, and on this set (and on his equally great record for MGM) Bill opens up with an approach that really suits him well. Each track features him shifting back and forth between electric and acoustic modes, dancing from one to the other in a way that makes the instruments come together beautifully – supported by some incredibly soulful bass work by Eddie Gomez, and drums by Marty Morrell. Titles include "Sugar Plum", "Funkallero", "Waltz for Debby", "TTT", "Re: Person I Knew", and "Comrade Conrad". LP, Vinyl record album

Elemental, 1970. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
Bill Evans is sporting a mustache on the cover, which wasn't always the greatest look for him – but the record's about listening, not looking – and it's a hell of a listen throughout! The set features Bill's wonderful trio with Eddie Gomez on bass and Marty Morell on drums – the latter a wonderfully gentle player, who gives the former just the right sort of space to wrap around Evans' fluidly gentle work on the piano, but never in a way that's similar to more mainstream bassists! It's almost as if Gomez was born to accompany Bill – or at least it feels that way on this set – as the trio work their way through wonderful readings of "34 Skiddoo", "Turn Out The Stars", "Autumn Leaves", "Nardis", "Emily", "Gloria's Step", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "So What", and "Quiet Now". First-ever release of this material! CD

Timeless (Germany), 1980. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
A well-titled late album from Bill Evans – live material, recorded at the Keystone Korner, with wonderfully sensitive accompaniment from Marc Johnson on bass and Joe LaBarbera on drums! There's a slightly different vibe to the record than some of Evans' other material from the period – a quality that seems to come from the piano, which is more resonant and "woody" than usual – clearly a different instrument, recorded differently – and in a way that actually seems to have Bill's left hand doing maybe slightly more than usual too. As always with a live Bill Evans recording, the whole thing is revelatory – and titles include "Morning Glory", "Laurie", "Letter To Evan", "Gary's Theme", "Up With The Lark", "Bill's Hit Tune", and "Knit For Mary F". Riverside/OJC, 1961. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The Bill Evans trio with Scott LaFaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums – a near-perfect lineup that forever raised the bar for jazz piano expression! The title here is certainly apt – because even though many of the tunes are shortish, Evans has a sense of exploration in the way he's approaching the keys – one that still retains some of the lyrically rhythmic traces of his first few records – but which also glides forth into territory that was virtually untapped on record for the time. The revolution here is so subtle, it's easy to miss from the perspective of our generation – but give it a few listens, and the record will open up beautifully! Riverside/Milestone, 1958/1959/1962. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
Nice Milestone 2-fer collected and remastered in 1975, of the Riverside LP Everybody Digs Bill Evans, an unreleased trio side and one outtake from the Interplay sessions. The first set finds Bill in his typical piano trio setting, joined by Sam Jones and Philly Joe Jones, but has several of his moody piano solos, the other format that he really shined in: "Lucky To Be Me", "Peace Piece" and Epilogue". The rest of the set bounces along nicely, with the light feel we dig so much about his trios, as does the later half of the LP, which is with Paul Chamber and Phily Joe. The last piece, "Loose Bloose", is a different take than the one included onteh Interplay 2-fer Milestone issued around this time, with Zoot Sims and Jim Hall in a not-often-heard quintet setting, that works surprisingly well. Also includes "Oleo", "Young & Foolish", "You And The Night And Music" and "Green Dolphin Street". LP, Vinyl record album

An amazing convergence of talents – one that took place in 1959, for Verve Records, and which featured work by some of the greatest modernists of the late 50s! The CD features work from 2 different Verve albums – Lee Konitz Meets Jimmy Giuffre and You & Lee – both of which features arrangements from Giuffre, then making big waves with his pianoless trio format for the label (and Atlantic) – but who's working here in a larger setting that still showcases his marvelously fluid conception of sound. The first set features twin altos by Konitz and Hal McKusic, alongside tenors by Warne Marsh and Ted Brown, with baritone sax by Jimmy, and incredibly subtle piano work by Bill Evans. The next session features Giuffre taking an even stronger hand in arrangements, but letting Konitz step out even more as the lead soloist – working within a larger horn group that features work by Billy Byers, Eddie Bert, and Ernie Royal. Bill Evans only plays on 4 of these tunes, with Jim Hall sliding in on guitar for the remainder – but that shift is ok with us, as it only further displays the Giuffre magic at the time! 17 tracks in all – with titles that include "Palo Alto", "Cork N Bib", "Uncharted", "Sompn Outa Nothin", "Darn That Dream", "I Didn't Know About You", "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You", and "You Are Too Beautiful". Fantastic early work from Gil Evans – emerging here in this early session as an already far-thinking modernist. Gil plays Jimi? Sounds like a gimmick, but it comes off pretty darn great – and it helps you forgive him for trying to convince the kids that he's not as old as his grey hair might make you think! As always with Evans, the key to the album is a beautiful balance between the strength of the players and vision of the arrangements – a hip mix of musicians who include Billy Harper on tenor and flute, Marvin Hannibal Peterson on trumpet, and both Ryo Kawasaki and John Abercrombie on guitars! Arrangements are great too – handled by Tom Malone, Warren Smith, and Howard Johnson – all of whom make the album way more than just an instrumental reading of Jimi Hendrix tunes – and instead a great platform for improvisation that uses tunes that include "Up From The Skies", "Foxy Lady", "Gypsy Eyes", "Voodoo Chile", "Angel", "Crosstown Traffic", and "Castles Made of Sand". Gil EvansLive At The Public Theater New York 1980 Vol 1 ... CD
Trio/Solid (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $11.99 14.99
A really fantastic late life performance from the great Gil Evans – a well-circulated live performance that has all those great electric touches that Evans had explored during the 70s, after an ill-fated project that was planned with Jimi Hendrix! There's a nice balance in the music here too – those older large group ideas that made Gil so great as a leader, especially on his important 60s recordings – with some of the evolutions made in fields of jazz folks might not have expected Evans to pay attention to in the 70s, but which turned him on in a surprising way! Gil plays an electric grand piano and is joined by a rather large set of musicians who include Masabumi Kikuchi on a variety of synthesizers, Billy Cobham on drums, Hammiet Bluiett and Arthur Blythe on saxes, Hannibal Marvin Peterson and Jon Faddis on trumpet, and George Lewis on trombone – a wide range of underground talents that show that Evans was still working with the best of the left field, even late in his career. Tracks include some Evans originals – "Anita's Dance", "Jelly Rolls", "Alyrio", and "Variations On The Misery", plus a version of Jimi Hendrix's "Up From The Skies". CD

Gil EvansOut Of The Cool ... LP
Impulse, 1961. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $43.99 79.99
A pivotal session for Gil Evans – one that brought his genius to the American public strongly and successfully, without the help of Miles Davis! Sure, Gil had recorded albums as a leader before this one – but the sparkling quality of this set is right up there with the charts he handled for Miles, and the quality of the players in the group make the performance every bit as great. Gil's band includes trumpeter Johnny Coles, plus Ron Carter on bass, Elvin Jones on drums, Budd Johnson on tenor, and Ray Crawford on guitar – all players who open up the sound with a magnificent array of colors that sparkle from the sublime Evans arranging touch. Titles include "Stratusphunk", "Sunken Treasure", "La Nevada", and a great reading of Kurt Weil's "Bilbao Song". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gil EvansPacific Standard Time ... LP
Blue Note, Late 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $11.99
Blue Note 2-fer that brings together some of Gil Evans' great modernist jazz pieces for the World Pacific label. The material was all recorded in New York in 1958 and 1959, and the groups include crack jazz players like Steve Lacy, Art Blakey, Cannonball Adderley, Johnn Coles, Elvin Jones, and Evans himself. The tracks are mostly standards, but they're given super-sharp arrangements by Evans, in the style that he was using for some of his work with Miles Davis. They also feature prominent soloists, also as with the Miles work, and titles include "Chant Of The Weed", "Lester Leaps In", "Round Midnight", "Manteca", and "Sruttin With Some Barbeque". 2 LPs, with a good essay on Evans' work. Gil Evans OrchestraInto The Hot ... LP
Impulse, 1961. Very Good+ ... $84.99
The harder of the two Gil Evans albums on Impulse to find, and the best – really far-reaching material that has Evans coming into contact with some of the hippest jazz players of his generation! The record's got three incredible tracks written by Cecil Taylor – a very bold move for Evans, given Taylor's strongly out reputation even at this point in his career – and possibly even more bold, given that Taylor's on the tracks playing piano, alongside players who include Archie Shepp, Jimmy Lyons, Sonny Murray, and Henry Grimes. The material's fantastic, and is a key part of Taylor's work at the time, and shows a very different setting for his piano – a bit of tension with the larger Evans group, in a way that's almost more compelling than his own early dates as a leader! Taylor titles include "Pots", "Bulbs", and "Mixed". The other tracks on the album were written by John Carisi, who wrote the classic "Israel" for Miles Davis' nine piece group in the late 40s – but who here contributes "Moon Taj", "Angkor Wat", and "Barry's Tune". Carisi's tracks are a bit more subdued, but no less wonderful – and arrangements are by Taylor and Carisi, of their own music, presented with the Evans modern touch. If you ever needed a record to convince you that Gil Evans was a genius, this is it! LP, Vinyl record album

Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1997. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
A great old-school vocal jazz album – not torchy 40s, but the kind of upbeat swinging style that you might find on a 60s record on labels like Prestige or Roulette – as singer Jenny Evans works with great small combo backing that keeps things nice and lean throughout, and balances her work on the lyrics with some nice instrumental solos too! Key among the musicians is trumpeter Dusko Gokyovich, who also handles some of the arrangements too – and other players include the great Gianni Basso on tenor and David Gazarov on piano. Titles include "Good Old Days", "That's What Zoot Said", "Caravan", "Alright Ok You Win", "All Of Me", "The Song Of Autumn", and "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise". CD

Trumpeter Peter Evans is in very cool territory here – working in an electro-acoustic environment that also includes keyboards from bassist Petter Eldh and electronics from drummer Jim Black! There's a pulsating vibe to a number of tracks here – almost the more jagged edges of electronic waveshapes – but the core energy of the set is from live, spontaneous performance – definitely that of Evans, who is fantastic on both piccolo trumpet and flugelhorn – as is Black, whose way of approaching the kit somehow feels both rhythmic and random at the same time! The album bristles with fresh sounds, in a way that really lives up to Evans' other sets – and titles include "Boom", "Nova", "In See", "Movement 56", "Fully Born", and "The Lighthouse". CD

Philips, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $7.99
The record is a composition "For African tapes, choir, soprano, shouter, African drummer, rock drummer, percussion, guitar, bass, piano, and organ" – and it takes tapes that Fanshawe recorded in the field during the late 60s, and mixes them with larger arrangements featuring all the elements listed above. At its best moments, the album has a nice groove – kind of a manufactured showy sort of African groove, almost as if Galt MacDermot had done an African version of Hair. Titles include "Crucifixus", "African Sanctus", "Kyrie", and "Et In Spiritum Sanctum". LP, Vinyl record album
