Giancarlo Bigazzi & Marco FalagianiMediterraneo (clear blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
AMS (Italy), 1991. New Copy ... $18.99
A really sweet little soundtrack to the 1991, WWII set film Mediterraneo – with warm instrumentation on Greek and Middle Eastern string, percussion and wind instruments – seamlessly blended with drums guitars and saxes! The soundtrack was composed by Giancarlo Bigazzi & Marco Falagiani – with nice, subtle and timelessly appealing moments – our favorite bits played on the ethnic instruments – including santouri, bouzouki, gavala and percussion. Titles include "L'Arrivo", "Il Tempo Passa", "Aziz Il Turco", "Ballo In Piazza", "Cornamuse", "Mediterraneo", "Lontani", "Il Pope", "L'incontro", "Lo Sbarco" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Guido & Maurizio De AngelisIl Cittadino Si Ribella (crystal vinyl pressing) ... LP
GDM/AMS (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99
A nice bit of funky crime work from Italy – a soundtrack to an obscure payback film from the 70s, done here with a nice mix of heavy beats, tight guitar, and some cool keyboards! The groove here is very much in the style of some of the best compilations of Italian cop soundtrack work we've stocked – and unlike some other thrillers of the time, the set's overflowing with funky tracks, so that you get way more than just a few funky numbers for your money! The blazing image on the cover is a great idea of what you'll hear inside – and titles include "Drivin All Around", "Goodbye My Friend", and "Il Cittadino Si Rebella". LP, Vinyl record album

Ennio MorriconeIl Mio Nome E Nessuno (My Name Is Nobody) ... LP
AMS (Italy), 1973. New Copy Gatefold ... $26.99
A wonderfully weird Ennio Morricone score – done for an equally weird western that starred the great Terence Hill in the lead! The movie mixes in a bit of comedy with straight action – and Morricone's music really fits that vibe – with a blend of more familiar classic Morricone western modes with more unusual sounds that really spice things up – with touches that include "squishy" electric keyboards, rolling vocal choruses, whistles, clock ticking, and other odd elements! There's an incredible amount of humor here, and the soundtrack stands as one of Morricone's more mad moments from a time when he was otherwise fairly subtle in his writing – served up with orchestrations conducted by Bruno Nicolai, and some voices from I Cantori Moderni. Titles include "Il Mio Nome E Nessuno", "Uno Strano Barbiere", "Piu Delle Valchirie", and "Con I Migliori Auguri". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ennio MorriconeGood, The Bad, And The Ugly – Original Soundtrack (crystal vinyl pressing) ... LP
AMS (Italy), 1966. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the first big moments of global fame for the legendary Ennio Morricone – and a record that still stands as one of his landmark albums all these many years later! The set's famous for its haunting theme – that "wah-wah-wah" melody that led to countless covers and samples over the years – but the whole thing's a lot more complex than just that tune – with lots of the same sense of space and brooding that Morricone brought to his music for Once Upon A Time In The West – with careful use of key instruments on a track by track basis, and these floating lines that almost signaled a whole new way of recording music for a film soundtrack. And yes, there's certainly key western elements like guitar or harmonica – but maybe more striking are all the points at which these obvious tropes disappear – to leave us with those really unique Morricone sounds that go way beyond music! Titles include "Insequimento", "Il Deserto", "Il Bandito Monco", "Fine Di Una Spia", "Marcetta", "Padre Ramirez", and "La Carrozza Dei Fantasmi". LP, Vinyl record album

CAM/AMS (Italy), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A set that's got a long date range in the title, but which really just features work that's mostly from the initial second chapter of material from the legendary Goblin – that great time when they'd turned their prog-trained talents on the world of film – and transformed a generation in the process! The set features tracks from some of their best-known sountracks – work for Patric, Tenebre, Phenomena, and others – and titles include the rare TV tune "Yell", plus "Funky Top", "Visioni", "Buio Omega", "Connexion", "St Helens Mountain", "La Chiesa (new edit)", "Sleepwalking", "Tenebre", and "Nocturne" – plus one track from 2001, "Nonhosonno/Killer On The Train/Arpeggio End Title". Two rare tracks from the Goblin score for George Romero's classic Dawn Of The Dead – both of them nice and dark! "L'Alba Dei Morti Viventi" is especially moody – almost a theme of hopelessness – presented here in a rare alternate take! "La Caccia" picks up the pace a bit, with these weird keyboard lines next to staccato rhythm bursts that are mighty nice! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Ennio MorriconeIl Gatto A Nove Code (with bonus tracks) ... LP
AMS/Cinevox (Italy), 1970. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A very spooky score for this film that's also known in America as "The Cat With Nine Tails" – the second collaboration between Ennio Morricone and noted horror director Dario Argento! The album's a bit different than some of Morricone's other work on horror films – and at times, it almost has qualities that sound more like a western – a spacious mix of light strings and more sparely focused instrumentation – sometimes a bassline, sometimes a bit of flute. Other numbers get a bit more dark and jagged – slightly atonal, with shimmering, shifting styles that create a tremendous amount of tension! Titles include "Paranoia Prima", "1970", "Sottintesi", "Ninna Nanna In Blu", "Placcaggio", and "Metafora Finale". Also fetaures three bonus tracks – "Passeggiata Notturna (single version)", "Placcaggio (alt)", and "Ninna Nanna In Blu (movie takes version)". LP, Vinyl record album

George AdamsSound Suggestions ... LP
ECM, 1979. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A beautifully soulful setting for the tenor saxophone of George Adams – a record that provides a nice balance to some of Adams' other European records of the same period, by unlocking a side of his talents that's almost more painterly and personal! Yet George's strong sense of a group is also firmly in place here – this is hardly a mellow, spacious ECM session – as Adams works tightly with the second tenor of the great Heinz Sauer, in a sextet that also includes Kenny Wheeler on trumpet and flugelhorn, Richard Beirach on piano, Dave Holland on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums. Wheeler's luminescent tone is a wonderful match for the two tenors – and the rhythm trio shifts effortlessly between swinging energy and looser moments. Titles include "Stay Informed", "Baba", "Imani's Dance", "A Spire", and "Got Something Good For You". LP, Vinyl record album

Pepper AdamsJulian (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Genius work from Pepper Adams – one of those players we sometimes forget about, then drop the needle on a record like this and fall in love with his music all over again! Adams blows baritone sax like nobody else – with a sensitivity that you'd normally hear on tenor, and a mix of modes that should have made him one of the most respected saxophonists of his generation – something that maybe didn't happen because of his unusual horn! Yet although big, there's nothing heavy about the way Pepper handles his horn – as you'll hear especially on the few ballads – and as usual for Adams, his choice of a group is great too – a sharp lineup with Walter Norris on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Makaya Ntshoko on drums. Titles include "Julian", "Ad Astra", "Jirge", "Spacemaker", and "Three & One". CD features two bonus tracks – "Time On My Hands" and "Lady Luck". CD

Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $13.99
Exactly the kind of session that really lets Pepper Adams show his stuff – full of long, live tracks that really have Adams stretching out on baritone – handling the instrument with soul, depth, and dexterity that might well be unmatched during this point in his career! The quartet here features Walter Norris on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Makaya Ntshoko on drums – and while all players are excellent, especially Mraz, it's really Pepper whose shining light guides the session – both on his original tunes "Bossa Nouveau" and "12th & Pingree" – and on nice takes on "Well You Needn't" and "A Child Is Born". A classic performance from the Axiom years of bassist Bill Laswell – done at a time when he was not only boldly stating his own musical vision, but also opening the door in these really collaborative ways! Here, the core group features Laswell on bass and electronics, and Tony Williams on drums – working at a level that still has some of the moodier Laswell production elements of the decade, but maybe more live energy too – a quality that's echoed by the great guest work from Pharoah Sanders on tenor, Graham Haynes on cornet, Byard Lancaster on alto and bass clarinet, and both Nicky Skopelitis and Buckethead on guitars. Titles include "Black Money", "Illuminator", "Wheeless On A Dark River", "The Earth Below", "Into The Circle", and "Returning". CD

Breakfast Dance & Barbecue? Our stomachs are growling already! The album's a great little live set from Basie – recorded at the Americana Hotel in Miami at 2 in the morning – and is one of the totally great, totally smoking live sessions that Basie recorded for Roulette – maybe some of his best work ever! The group's an all-star lineup – with Frank Foster and Frank Wess on tenor, Joe Newman and Thad Jones on trumpets, Freddie Green on guitar, and Sonny Payne on drums – plus Joe Williams vocalizing on a few of the tunes on the set. The tracks are a bit longer than usual – which is quite nice – and titles include "Let's Have A Taste", "Moten Swing", "Who Me", and "Counter Block". Includes 10 bonus tracks, not on the LP. CD

A pretty great book about folks who almost made it in the music business, but who never quite hit the stardom they were destined for – even though a few of these figures have become legendary over the years! The book looks at rock and soul artists from the 60s and 70s, almost all of them with pretty amazing stories – and continued moments of "almost" in their careers – points where their paths seemed about to hit the big time, but life turned the other way. These aren't one-hit wonders, or failures – but really interesting people whose stories are great, and often illuminated with really striking photos and images from their past. The book features chapters on Cherry Vanilla, Evie Sands, Brett Smiley, Betty Davis, Bobby Jameson, Gloria Jones, Chris Darrow, Jake Holmes, and others – hardcover, 159 pages, with images throughout. Anthony Braxton – Georg Grawe DuoAmsterdam 1991 ... CD
Okka Disk, 1991/1997. New Copy Gatefold ... $9.99 14.99
A really wonderful, very organic album from the duo of Anthony Braxton on reeds and Georg Grawe on piano – a set that's got a looser, freer vibe than some of Braxton's other music of the time – and which maybe takes us back to the spirit of some of earliest work on the Chicago scene! Grawe's got a nicely pointed style of playing – notes that are free, but clear and distinct – which seems to almost produced a grittier style from Braxton at times, as he blows a range of instruments that include soprano sax, clarinet, alto, and flute. The titles are free of the more academic codes that Braxton usually brings to play, and the music is too – on selections that are simply titled "Duet 1", "Duet 2", and "Duet 3". CD

Great rare material from Clifford Brown's legendary days at Emarcy – tracks recorded as part of the Dinah Jams vocal sessions, but done in a much more extended jam session mode! Washington sings a bit on 2 of the tracks, but the main focus here is on Brownie working with a jamming set of instrumentalists that really open up on extended solo work. The album features 2 groups – one with the great Walter Benton on tenor, Herb Geller and Joe Maini on altos, and Kenny Drew on piano – the other with Clark Terry on trumpet, Geller on alto, Harold Land on tenor, and Junior Mance on piano – great lineups on both sessions! Tracks are long, very much in the "jams" feeling of the title – and titles include "Coronado", "I'll Remember April", and "Crazy He Calls Me". CD

Dave Burrell & Motoharu YoshizawaDreams ... CD
Trio (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $13.99
If you've ever doubted the genius of pianist Dave Burrell, this may well be the record to push you over the top – as the album captures Burrell at the height of his power, at a time when he was very much in a long-form, incredibly dynamic mode of improvisation – equal maybe to the greatness of Cecil Taylor during the same time! Yet Burrell can also balance his moods and modes, too – so that one of the album's long numbers, he's completely on fire – whereas on the other he's got a much more spacious sense of improvisation – really waiting and sounding things out, with superb accompaniment from bassist Motoharu Yoshizawa on both selections. Yoshizawa has this incredible boldness on the fast, free tune "Red/Black" – then comes at his instrument in a completely different way on the moodier, more contemplative "Green/Day Dream". CD

There's definitely a feeling of friendship going on here – a spirit that echoes the image on the cover, as the many horns of Daniel Carter come into close collaboration with the acoustic guitar work of Jessica Ackerley! Ackerley has an open, often gentle style of playing – one that rings out with slow-moving cycles of sound – and Carter blows flute, alto, clarinet, soprano sax, and even a bit of trumpet – shading things in with this delightfully personal, intimate quality – in a way that's a bit different than many of his other recent records. The titles of the songs really get at the feeling of the recording – and they include "Converging", "Dream State", "Hidden Truths", "Awakening", "Welcome Our Friends", and "Lucid Dreamer". CD

Curtis Clark with Louis MoholoDreams Deferred ... CD
Nimbus, 1993. New Copy ... $9.99
2 great sessions from pianist Curtis Clark – a crucially overlooked player, and one with a style that bridges the modernist gap between Thelonious Monk and Cecil Taylor! The first 5 tracks on the set are all (coincidentally enough!) tunes by Monk – played with a trio that includes Wayne Dockery on bass and Louis Moholo on drums, in a style that really changes up the mood of the original compositions, yet still keeps all their angular charm. Titles include "Misterioso", "Monk's Mood", "Light Blue", and the great "Worry Later/San Francisco Holiday". The remaining 6 tracks on the CD feature the trio with Dockery and Moholo, expanded to a septet with players that include Tristan Honsiger on cello, Felicity Provan on trumpet, and Tobias Delius on tenor sax. These tunes are nearly all originals by Clark, and some of them are a fair bit straighter than his other work of the time – almost in a soulbop mode on the best numbers. Titles include "Sean", "Two Shadows In The Mist", "Nelson", and "Diaphane". CD

Dusko plays both trumpet and flugelhorn on the record, often with this spacious approach to soloing that's not unlike Art Farmer at his best – a really great way of shaping the notes carefully, then letting them hang in air – over gentle rhythms from Bob Degen on piano, Isla Eckinger on bass, and Jarrod Cagwin on drums. There's a lovely sort of balance to the record that makes it stand out from some of Dusko's other recent work – and titles include "Ballad For Belgrade", "All My Love", "One Morning In May", "Little Theo", "I Miss You So", and "In My Dreams". One of our favorite albums ever from guitarist Grant Green – an amazingly stretched-out session that's served up with a good deal of modal jazz in the rhythms – and a date that features killer work from Larry Young on organ and Bobby Hutcherson on vibes! The pair join Green in a quartet that also includes Elvin Jones on drums – who provides a loose, fluid approach to rhythm that really sets the tone for the date – a flowing vibe that folds together the organ, guitar, and vibes beautifully – with an incomparable floating vibe that's pure magic! All tracks are long and very open – and titles include "Street Of Dreams", "Somewhere In The Night", and "Lazy Afternoon". CD

Ramsey LewisDancing In The Street ... LP
Cadet, 1967. Very Good Gatefold ... $7.99
A late 60s groover from the second Ramsey Lewis trio – the one that features Cleveland Eaton on bass and Maurice White on drums, both doing a pretty great job of filling the spot vacated by Eldee Young and Red Holt! The album's a live one, cut in the successful mode of Ramsey's records with the Young/Holt group – mostly featuring familiar numbers transformed by the Lewis Trio's hard-grooving approach to their work! It's great to hear Maurice White in a pre-Earth Wind & Fire jazz setting – and the album's got a slightly more open sound than some of Ramsey's earlier live dates – especially on the Brazilian tinged numbers that include "Mood For Mendes", "Corcovado", and "Medley From Black Orpheus". Other tracks include "Struttin Lightly", "Dancing In The Street", "You Don't Know Me", and "What Now My Love". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ramsey LewisDon't It Feel Good ... LP
Columbia, 1975. Very Good+ ... $7.99
Massive keyboard work from the great Ramsey Lewis – easily one of his best records ever, thanks to some spaciously funky production by Charles Stepney! Stepney plays keyboards here along with Ramsey, and the twin-keys approach makes for a sound that's extra-special – one that sums up all the earlier soulful creativity of both artists in their late 60s Cadet Records years, and hones it down to an even sweeter groove for the 70s! A number of tracks have some sort of vocal component, but usually in a chorus mode that soon drops out when the keyboards hit home – and the record features a few great short "interlude" tracks that are almost as great as the longer numbers! Titles include the classic "Juaacklyn", a cover of Earth Wind & Fire's "That's The Way Of The World", and the tracks "I Dig You", "Fish Bite", "Don't It Feel Good", "Something About You", and "Can't Function". Ramsey LewisFunky Serenity/Golden Hits/Solar Wind/Sun Goddess ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
A quadruple-header from Ramsey Lewis – four albums from his great 70s electric period on Columbia Records! First up is Funky Serenity – sweet electric funk from Ramsey Lewis! The album's one of his best from the 70s – and it's got Ramsey on Fender Rhodes, electric harpsichord, and other keyboards, grooving away in an open-ended 70s mode that still retains all the heavy soul of his classic work for Chess. Morris Jennings adds in some very nice percussion with his drum work, and Cleveland Eaton's on funky bass, giving the set a strong bottom groove. Features the sublime sample cut "My Love For You", a great version of "Knights In White Satin" that's done with a weird spacey groove, plus the tracks "Kufany Mapenzi (Making Love)", "Serene Funk", "What It Is!", and "Dreams". Golden Hits isn't a "best of", but instead has Ramsey and his funky mid 70s trio with Morris Jennings and Cleveland Eaton revisiting some of his best loved material from the Cadet years, but with the groovy Rhodes and wah wah sound that we dig so much about his CBS recordings. Unlike some of the other records from this period, the group's nice and stripped down, just the electric piano, bass and drums, so the groove's nice and wide open, Ramsey and company popping along with the sanctified soulful vibe of his 60s work, but updating their sound with some nice electric touches. 9 numbers in all: "Hang On Sloopy", "Blues For The Night Owl", "Hi-Heel Sneakers", "Carmen", "Delilah", "Wade In The Water", "Slippin' Into Darkness", "Somethin' You Got", and "The In Crowd". Solar Wind was cut smack dab in the middle of Ramsey's glory days at Columbia Records – with great production help and work on bass from the mighty Cleveland Eaton! The style is nice and lean, with just some occasional fuller touches – and Ramsey plays plenty of Fender Rhodes, in addition to bits of Arp and moog too – in a setting that's mostly trio, with a few guest players stepping into the mix from track to track! There's a nice degree of fuzz at points, thanks to added help from Steve Cropper – and titles include a great funky version of "Summer Breeze", plus "Solar Wind", "Come Down In Time", "Love for A Day", "Hummingbird", "Jamaican Marketplace", and "Sweet & Tender You". Sun Goddess is one of our favorite Ramsey Lewis albums ever – and a perfect summation of the genius that was brewing on the Chicago scene in the late 60s and early 70s! The album has Ramsey working strongly with Earth Wind & Fire – no surprise, given his close ties to Maurice White, who was the drummer in Ramsey's trio before starting his own group – and the shared relationship both artists had with producer Charles Stepney! The three were all key parts of the late 60s sound at Chess Records – but here, they've brought the same soulful energy to Columbia – working in a wider, more mature groove for the 70s – one that has Lewis' wicked Fender Rhodes lines stretching out strongly over tight, compressed, funky lines from EWF! The centerpiece of the set is the massive 7 minute "Sun Goddess", but there's lots of other nice ones like "Living For The City", "Gemini Rising", and "Jungle Strut". Funky, electric, and sublimely wonderful all the way through! CD

Cadet, Mid 60s. Sealed Gatefold ... $13.99
Jazzy and classy – and one of the first of Ramsey's albums to feature him working with larger arrangements instead of the usual trio. In this case, the whole thing was arranged and conducted by Richard Evans – with a spacey hip sound that's not too far from some of Ramsey's later work for Cadet with Charles Stepney. Evans' arrangements are in that strident stepping Soulful Strings mode – and Ramsey's working the keys hard and soulfully over the top, bouncing around the piano in a hard mode that wipes away any schmaltz that you might have caught on the records otherwise. The whole thing grooves quite nicely in a mix of spacey jazz and easy soul – and titles include "The Pawnbroker", "Saturday Night After The Movies", "Girl Talk", "Matchmaker", "Return To Paradise", "Goin Hollywood", "From Russia With Love", and "The Gentle Rain". One of Ramsey Lewis' best albums of the 60s – a killer Cadet record that stands right up there with classics like Maiden Voyage and Mother Nature's Son! As on those records, arrangements here are mostly by Charles Stepney, who comes up with that righteous blend of soul, strings, and jazz that really takes Ramsey to the next level – and the great Chicago soul arranger Richard Evans handles a few tracks here too, bringing a slightly funky undercurrent to the record. Part of the record seems to take off from Stepney's sessions for Minnie Riperton – particularly the cuts "Distant Dreamer" and "Rainy Day In Centerville" – both done here as instrumentals – and a version of "Golden Slumbers" is clearly from the Beatles' sessions used for Mother Nature's Son. The album's essential listening through and through – Ramsey really taking things past the simple structure of the trio, yet never losing his soul in the process. Other titles include "You've Made Me Feel So Very Happy", "Time & Space", "Do I Love Her", "Close Your Eyes & Remember", "Whenever Wherever", and "The Love I Feel For You". CD

Cadet, 1967. Very Good ... $7.99
Although Ramsey first scored big with his spare trio recordings during the late 50s, by this point in his career, Cadet were wisely playing with his sound a lot, adding in new elements to keep things fresh and soulful. Such is the case with this album, which has Ramsey's second trio (with Cleveland Eaton and Maurice White) performing with very groovy arrangements by Richard Evans. The result is some totally cool material – very much in the best crossover mode of the Cadet Concept years. The highlight of the album is the Eastern-tinged funky number "Jade East", which has some nice sitar and chimes in the background. Mind Maintenance (Joshua Abrams & Chad Taylor)Mind Maintenance ... LP
Drag City, 2021. New Copy ... $25.99 32.99
Joshua Abrams and Chad Taylor are already fantastic musicians on their own key instruments – bass and drums, respectively – but here, they take up different instrumental modes – and with a result that's every bit as spiritually powerful as their work in other styles! Abrams plays guimbri, a bass-like instrument of Gnawan origin – but one that features just three strings, and a much smaller tonal range – which he uses here in ways that are nicely focused, and often rhythmic – these progressions that are balanced by Taylor's wonderful sounds on mbira – the instrument that most folks know as the African thumb piano! Taylor makes these beautifully melodic sounds, and Adams moves between plucking his instrument, and using it in percussive modes too – a really wonderful blend. Titles include "Glow & Glimmer", "Slack Water", "Complete Rain", "Mental Eyes", "Valence", "Snap Yr Teeth", "The Ladder", and "Entrainment". LP, Vinyl record album

There's really strong ensemble feel that almost takes us back to the glory days of the Japanese club jazz recordings from earlier in the century, or maybe some of the best British funky jazz moments from this label's earliest years – but Nimbus Sextet also bring a lot more jazz-based sophistication to bear, with really strong arrangements that push things way past the rhythms in search of a strong array of tones and colors! Players include Joe Nichols on keyboards, Martin Fell on saxes, and Euan Allardice on trumpet – and two tracks feature vocals from Anthony Thomasz. Ahmed Abdul-MalikJazz Sounds Of Africa (Music Of Ahmed Abdul-Malik/Sounds Of Africa) ... CD
New Jazz/Prestige, 1961/1962. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
Revolutionary work from one of the most important talents you never heard of – 2 jazz/world classics from the amazing Ahmed Abdul-Malik! The CD begins with The Music Of Ahmed Abdul Malik from 1961 – a record that has the bassist working in a very sophisticated cross-cultural mode – pulling together many different strands of jazz and Eastern music, forging them into a very unique sound. Unlike some of Malik's other records, which featured a style that was very heavy on Middle Eastern instrumentation, this one's got a very even blend of jazz – and features excellent work by Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, Calo Scott on cello, Eric Dixon on tenor, and Andrew Cyrille on drums. Malik himself plays bass and oud, and the record's got a snaking mix of jazz and exoticism that's roughly similar to Yusef Lateef's work on Savoy, or some of Sun Ra's work from the time. Titles include "Nights On Saturn", "La Ibkey", "The Hustlers", and "Oud Blues". Sounds Of Africa is one of Malik's greatest – a combination of both his modern and experimental sides, a mixture of off-key hardbop and odd instrumentation that includes cello, oud, and lots of extra percussion. The fantastic Tommy Turrentine plays trumpet on one cut, Richard Williams plays on all others – and the percussionists include Chief Bey, Montego Joe, and Andrew Cyrille! Titles include "The African Bossa Nova", "Wakida Hena", "Communication", "Suffering", and "Nadusilma". CD

Comet (France), 2004. Used ... $14.99
Smoking Afro Funk from the legendary Tony Allen – recording during an incredible world tour in 2004, in a lean, mean groove that stands as a nice counterpoint to his studio sessions of the past few years! Tony's working here with a stripped down quintet – led by himself on drums and vocals, and featuring lots of Fender Rhodes and other keyboards, plus trumpet, bass, and guitar. The sound here is really great – as all tunes on the set are nice and long – and taken in back-to-basic jams that get back to the core sound of Afro Funk that Tony first invented with Fela, while still retaining some of the more cosmic touches of some of Allen's recent work. There's no overly-clever electronics or studio tricks to get in the way of the grooves – and the tunes on the set jam with an intensity that shows why Tony's been selling out concerts around the world in recent years! Titles include "Don't Fight", "Yeshe", "No Accomodation", "Eparapo", "Asiko", and "Black Voices". CD

The record was cut in Chicago with a very hard rhythm section that includes John Houston on piano, Charles Williams on bass, and George Brown on drums – and it's way heavier than the usual Verve "meeting of the masters" session, and feels more like a record that should have been issued on Prestige or Argo. The first half has this swinging jazz festival vibe – Ernestine really reaching out to win over the crowd with her charms, and backing by a core trio with Hank Jones on piano, occasionally expanded into a bigger ensemble. The London tracks are a bit more intimate, and feature a trio with John Horler on piano – and some especially great phrasing from Anderson. Titles include "Stormy Monday", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "I Don't Get Around Much Anymore", "Love For Sale", and a long "Ellington Medley". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has split seams with tape remnants, light surface wear, and some aging.)

Jon AppletonFour Fantasies For Synclavier ... CD
Folkways, 1982. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
Great long-form work from electronics wizard Jon Appleton – performed in the early 80s on the synclavier, but with the same sort of sensitivity as his early electronics experiments! Most tunes here are relatively extended – and work together with a slightly poetic feel that lives up to the "fantasies" in the title – dark soundscapes with some occasionally lyrical moments, but played in a way that's definitely left of center! Titles include "Kapingamarangi", "Stet", "Sashasonjon", and "The Sweet Dreams Of Miss Pamela Beach". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

Art Ensemble Of ChicagoWe Are On The Edge – 50th Anniversary Celebration ... CD
PI Recordings, 2019. Used 2 CDs ... $13.99
A tremendous tribute to the legendary Art Ensemble Of Chicago – a group who work here with only two of their surviving members, but with help from a constellation of jazz musicians inspired by their music! The group here is large, and includes AACM members and other younger talents – a fantastic lineup that mixes the core work of Famadou Don Moye on drums and percussion, and Roscoe Mitchell on reeds with work from Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Hugh Ragin and Fred Berry on trumpets, Tomeka Reid on cello, Jaribu Shahid and Junius Paul on basses, Enoch Williams and Titos Sompa on percussion, and Christina Wheeler on voice and a range of unusual electronic instruments! There's a very ambitious feel to the music – like some of Roscoe Mitchell's larger form creations, but with more of a spiritual jazz current that comes from the whole ensemble – and from vocal contributions from Moore Mother and Rodolfo Cordova Lebron. The double-length set features a studio album and a live album by the expanded group – and titles include "Bell Song", "We Are On The Edge", "Chi Congo 50", "Fanfare & Bell", "Odwalla/The Theme", "Tutankhamun", "Mama Koko", "Saturday Morning", and "Villa Tiamo". Ash Ra TempelSchwingungen ... LP
Ohr/MG Art (Germany), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 About October 15, 2021
One of the best early albums from Ash Ra Tempel! Here they bring vocals into to the mix for the first time, though it's still a spacious blend of slow-building atmosphere and spare dynamics that evolve into more feverish and intense maelstroms. The vocals of John L are another instrument, really – with gruff screams and moodier howls that echo the instrumentation impressively. The drums and percussion and incredible, with sax, organ, guitar and electronics. Work that bridges earlier psych to later experimental rock pretty fearlessly! Includes the "Light And Darkness" suite of " A) Light: Look At Your Sun" and "B) Darkness: Flowers Must Die" (originally spanning a side), plus the Schwingungen side "A) Suche" and "B) Liebe". Ben AtkinsPatchouli (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Enterprise/Big Pink (South Korea), 1971. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 22.99
An unusual rock record issued by the Enterprise imprint of Stax Records – the same one that released the Isaac Hayes albums at the time, and maybe a good choice for Ben Atkins, given some of the soulful currents in his music! The ramshackle cottage on the front is maybe a good indication of the spirit here – a southern vibe that easily mixes soulful inspiration with more rock-based songwriting and instrumentation – recorded both at Muscle Shoals and at the Stax Studios, with work from Barry Beckett on keyboards, Roger Hawkins on drums, and Wayne Perkins on guitar. Ben's got a very distinct vocal approach – one that's all his own, and which nicely doesn't sound like he's trying to cop anyone else's game – and the set includes tunes by Bettye Crutcher, Dan Penn, and Bobby Manuel – the last of whom produced and arranged the set. Titles include "Good Times Are Coming", "Smokestack Lightnin/Brighter Side Of It All", "That Brings Me Down", "Solid Ground", "I Love This Song", "Shine On", "Holding On To Friends", and "A Long Way To Go". Kylie AuldistThis Is What Happiness Looks Like ... LP
Soul Bank, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99 20.99
Aussie singer Kylie Auldist first cut her teeth singing for deep funk groups – but on a set like this, it's clear that she's ready to step out and soar into a wide world of soulful modes! The record brings in more 80s styles than we've heard from Kylie before – some keyboards and beats that bubble and turn nicely with the catchy lyrics of the tunes – and, in a way, it might almost seem like the singer is even better suited to music like this than some of the harder funk that got her going in the first place! The record's got a lot of tasty crossover cuts that almost hit mid 80s Deniece Williams territory – and titles include "All Mine", "Lyb", "Just Show Me", "Fly", "I Get It", "Everythink", and "Stay In Front". ✨✧ David AxelrodSeriously Deep ... CD
Polygram/Dusty Groove, 1975. Used ... $9.99
An amazing slice of music from the legendary David Axelrod – quite different than his better-known sides for Capitol and Reprise Records – and plenty darn funky overall! Axelrod is at his studio best here – stepping off the funky jazz modes he produced for Cannonball Adderley, and taking a shot at that territory on his own! In a reversal of modes, Cannonball actually handles the production – with help from Jimmy Bowen – which leaves Axelrod alone to compose, arrange, and direct the group on the set. The album's got a fair bit of electricity in the mix – heavy keyboards from Joe Sample, and some really fuzzy guitars – plus lots of choppy reed work from Joe Sample and Ernie Watts, all wrapped up with some monstrously funky drums from Ndugu Chancler. There's a very bottom-heavy groove to the record – one that makes for a few completely amazing breaks, and a very funky sound overall – and Axelrod does an amazing job of controlling the players here – so that nobody jams too much, and the grooves are always right on the money! The whole thing's great – a sublime symphony of instrumental funk all the way through – and titles include "Reverie", "Miles Away", "Go For It", "Ken Russell", "1000 Rads", and "One". First time ever on CD – a seminal reissue from Dusty Groove! CD

Roy AyersFeeling Good ... CD
Polydor/PTG (Netherlands), 1982. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
Stellar sounds from the great Roy Ayers – an early 80s album for Polydor, but a set that's still got the wonderfully tight, wonderfully groovy feel of his late 70s albums for the label! Roy's really perfected his sense of balance by this time – and does a great job of balancing groovers with sweet mellow steppers – the kind of cool, compressed, jazzy numbers that we love so much! Ayers heads for the clubs one minute, the bedroom the next – and draws us in beautifully whichever direction he takes – thanks to some sublime vibes and electric piano – and great lead vocals from Roy, and other singers who include Terri Wells, Vivian Prince, John King, and Ricky Williams. Titles include "Ooh", "Let's Stay Together", "Feeling Good""Knock Knock", "Turn Me Loose", "Stairway To The Stars", and "Our Time Is Coming". CD

Albert AylerBerlin, Lorrach, Paris, & Stockholm Revisited (Berlin/Stockholm & Lorrach/Paris) ... CD
Hat Hut (Switzerland), 1966. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 19.99
A double-length package – one that brings together two previous Hat Art releases of live material – Berlin/Stockholm and Lorrach/Paris! The 2CD set features crucial European performances by Albert Ayler in the mid 60s – one that were issued until many years after the recording, but which has become one of the sharpest pictures of his genius at the time! The vibe is different than the Ayler albums for ESP – still very much in the same territory, but with this approach that's really reaching out with a deeply spiritual consciousness – an energy to embrace the whole history of jazz, both very old and very new – and re-form its entire ideology into a richly personal expression. Ayler's tremendous on tenor, but Don Ayler is often equally great on trumpet – and the unusual group features Michel Samson on violin, William Fowell on bass, and Beaver Harris on drums. The set features versions of "Truth Is Marching In", "Omega (Is The Alpha)", "Our Prayer – Bells" and "Infinite Spirit – Japan" from Stockholm, juxtaposed with differing performances of those titles in Berlin, plus the riveting closer "Ghosts – Bells", also from Berlin. The Lorrach/Paris recordings include really unique readings of "Bells", "Prophet", "Our Prayer/Spirits Rejoice", "Ghosts", "Truth Is Marching In", and "Spiritual Rebirth/Light In Darkness/Infinite Spirit". ✨✧ Angelo BadalamentiBlue Velvet (deluxe edition) (2021 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Varese, 1986. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... On November 26, 2021
❔
A wonderfully creepy soundtrack – and one that would provide an important preface to the huge musical legacy that Angelo Baldamenti would give David Lynch for Twin Peaks! This soundtrack features half of Baldamenti's eerie, airy sounds – and half of the kind of old school numbers that gave the narrative such an out of time sort of vibe – and which we're happy they were able to include. Baldamenti titles include "Night Streets/Sandy & Jeffrey", "Frank", "Jeffrey's Dark Sid", "Mysteries Of Love", "Going Down To Lincoln/Sound Effects Suite", and "Frank Returns". Other titles include the Julee Cruise vocal version of "Mysteries Of Love" – plus "Honky Tonk" by Bill Doggett, Love Letters" by Ketty Lester, and In Dreams" by Roy Orbison. (Note: This item is not for sale online until 7:00am on Saturday, November 27. Chet BakerChet – Ballads By Chet Baker (with bonus track) ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1959. Used ... $5.99
One of a handful of late 50s albums that Chet Baker recorded for Riverside – all of which are some of his last great 50s work in the studio, before a shift in the 60s to a wider-ranging approach to his music! The style here is definitely in the "classic" Baker mode set down for Pacific Jazz – but a bit more fleshed out by the other players in the set – who seem to push a bit more personality into the tunes, and not just let Chet's trumpet dominate. The sound is soft and gentle – as you'd expect from the title – and other players include Bill Evans, Pepper Adams, Kenny Burrell, Paul Chambers, Connie Kay and Philly Joe Jones – all bringing a bit of a New York undercurrent to the west coast Baker solo style. Titles include "How High the Moon", "It Never Entered My Mind", "If You Could See Me Now", "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", "Time On My Hands", and "You And The Night And Music". Also includes the bonus track "Early Morning Mood". CD

Chet BakerPeace (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1982. New Copy ... $13.99
A key album from a fantastic point in the career of trumpeter Chet Baker – his later years, a time when most of the world was ignoring Baker's talents, but Chet was still in a hugely creative mode, and turning out some of his freshest sounds in decades! There's a wonderful quality to the whole record – and vibist David Friedman is a key part of the sound, as he really matches the air inclinations of Chet, as the pair are backed by Buster Williams on bass and Joe Chambers on drums and percussion – a fantastic duo who only make things sound even better. 4 of the album's 6 tracks are Friedman originals – including "For Now", "Shadows", "Syzygies", and "Lament For Thelonious". CD features alternate takes of "Peace" and "Syzygies". CD

Chet BakerPlays The Best Of Lerner & Loewe (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Riverside, 1959. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 25.99
A record that hides a bit under its title and cover – looking like a songbook session, and without Chet Baker's dreamy face on the front – but one that stands every bit as strongly with Baker's other late 50s sessions for Riverside, and done with an equally nice set of New York elements in the mix! The lineup is nicely unusual for a Chet Baker date – Herbie Mann on flute and tenor, Zoot Sims on alto and tenor, Pepper Adams on baritone, and even some piano from Bill Evans – and even though the tunes are all familiar Lerner & Loewe standards, they really come alive in the handling of these top shelf artists. Titles include "Show Me", "I Talk To The Trees", "On The Street Where You Live", "The Heather On The Hill", "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face", and "Almost Like Being In Love".
