Gato BarbieriLast Tango In Paris (180 gram pressing) ... LP
AMS (Italy), 1972. New Copy ... $28.99 29.99
One of the greatest moments ever from saxophonist Gato Barbieri – and that's saying a lot, given that by the time of this recording, he'd already had a great 60s run as an avant jazz musician, and started the 70s with a string of albums that criss-crossed jazz and South American musical styles! Yet Last Tango In Paris may well be Barbieri's crowning achievement – a sublime record that draws on all the richer, more emotive themes of his Latin America projects, but gives them new focus in the arrangements of Oliver Nelson – who ensures that the music is never too cheesy or overdone – quite a feat, given the sexy setting of the film! Gato draws a lot from Argentine tango, but often uses his own sax solos in place of a more familiar bandoneon – in a way that pushes the "new tango" mode of the time even farther – especially when set amidst Nelson's wonderful orchestrations. Titles include many versions of the "Last Tango" theme, plus the tracks "Girl In Black", "Jeanne", "Why Did She Choose You?", "It's Over", and "Fake Ophelia". LP, Vinyl record album

Giancarlo Bigazzi & Marco FalagianiMediterraneo (clear blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
AMS (Italy), 1991. New Copy ... $18.99
A really sweet little soundtrack to the 1991, WWII set film Mediterraneo – with warm instrumentation on Greek and Middle Eastern string, percussion and wind instruments – seamlessly blended with drums guitars and saxes! The soundtrack was composed by Giancarlo Bigazzi & Marco Falagiani – with nice, subtle and timelessly appealing moments – our favorite bits played on the ethnic instruments – including santouri, bouzouki, gavala and percussion. Titles include "L'Arrivo", "Il Tempo Passa", "Aziz Il Turco", "Ballo In Piazza", "Cornamuse", "Mediterraneo", "Lontani", "Il Pope", "L'incontro", "Lo Sbarco" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Calibro 35High Tension Vol 35 – Calibro 35 Plays Lesiman ... LP
AMS (Italy), 2019. New Copy ... $32.99
Maybe one of the coolest records we've ever heard from Calibro 35 – and certainly one of the funkiest – thanks in part to a selection of tracks that are pulled from the catalog of Italian sound library genius Lesiman! The music is very hip – unusual sonic touches alongside tight basslines, great drums, and riffing guitar – all recorded with a mode that seems more open, airy, and inventive than any other Calibro 35 record too! And oddly, even though the group are reaching for a more direct reference to a sound and style they've already been exploring, the whole thing is maybe their most individual album overall – and the group's greatest calling card to date. Titles include "Milano 7", "Play Car", "Players/Bagliori", "Moto Centripeto", "Macchine Nello Spazio", "Schegge", and "Ricognizione Sulle Macerie". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Magnetic System (Vince Tempera, Franco Bixio & Fabio Frizzi)Godzilla/Escape ... 7-inch
AMS (Italy), Late 70s. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... Out Of Stock
A tremendous trio from the Italian soundtrack scene of the 70s – Franco Bixio, Fabio Frizzi, and Vince Tempera – all great talents on their own, but a real powerhouse of grooves when they got together on work like this! The Bixio-Fizzi-Tempera name always meant something extra-groovy on a record – either an extra-funky soundtrack with lots of weird touches, or the kind of cool Italian single that might be somewhere between sound library funk and more progressive material – a really rich array of sounds that came from the trio during their years working together in the mid 70s! This special 7" single features two of the grooviest tracks from their one album together – "Godzilla" and "Escape". 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Special Record Store Day 2020 release – now bumped into regular rotation!)

✨✧ Luis BacalovDjango (limited edition colored vinyl) ... LP
GDM/AMS (Italy), 1966. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A dark little western soundtrack from Luis Bacalov – one that's quite brooding overall, despite a rather catchy vocal tune on the title! There's some very odd instrumentation here – watery piano lines, floating bits of guitar, off-tuned strings – all used at different intervals, and in different ways – without as strongly of a unified feel as other albums of this nature. But it's those shifting sounds that make the record great – always creating an unsettling sort of mood, and one that's almost always in the darker, starker side of the spectrum. Bruno Nicolai handled orchestrations, and titles include "Blue Dark Waltz", "Django (Waiting)", "Django (Love Moment", "La Corsa (2nd Version)", "Vamonos Muchachos", "Duello Nel Fango", "Town Of Silence", "Epera Y Ataque", "Fruscii Notturni", "Django (Rage)" and more. CAM/AMS (Italy), Late 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A very cool collection of work from Goblin – the prog rock group whose horror soundtracks really helped transform the sound of Italian cinema in the 70s! Goblin's earlier music was more jamming – but here, they really revel in space as much as they do sound – leaving plenty of room for keyboard lines, guitar bits, and the kind of slightly-funky elements that make their music so great – in a package that pulls together some of their best cuts from the films Profondo Rosso, Roller, Chi, La Via Della Drogsa, Zombi, and Suspiria. Titles include "La Via Della Droga", "Chi (parts 1 & 2)", "Death Dies", "Trumpet's Flight", "E Suono Rock", "Zaratozom", "Zombi", "Suspiria", and "Roller". Includes liner notes and memorabilia by Fabio Capuzzo! LP, Vinyl record album

AMS/Quartet (Spain), 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Dark genius from Italian composer Riz Ortolani – very spooky sounds written for a film whose English language translation is "Don't Torture A Duckling"! Non Si Sevizia Un Paperino has these amazing string passages that really creep us out – played with razor-sharpness and echoey quality on the best cuts, in an almost Psycho-like style that's really wonderful! Mellower cuts on the soundtrack have a nicely contrasting sweeter approach, with a few warm 70s-styled melodies – and the score is represented by 12 titles from the original album, including "Quei Giorni Insieme A Te", which features vocals by Omella Vanoni. ✨✧ Piero UmilianiLe Isole Dell'Amore (180 gram blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Cinevox/AMS (Italy), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A sweet little island-based soundtrack from Piero Umiliani – one that's served up in just the right blend of exotica and jazz! Some elements here resonate with Umiliani's more familiar Italian scores of the time – some sweet keyboards that trip out nicely at a level that's a few notches down from funk, with maybe a bit of bossa in the mix – while others add in a bit more percussion or strings, to flesh things out with some sunnier, more tropical elements that are a nice contrast to some of the other moments. There's a bit of vocals in the mix, but most tunes are instrumental – and titles include "Le Isolle Dell'Amore", "Tamoure Titoli", "Papete Aru", "Vele Al Vento", "Comunita' Hippy", "La Danza Del Turista", "Corale Isole Dal Tema", "Palme E Cocchi", and "Nuku". Eremite/Aguirre (Belgium), 2010. New Copy ... About December 18, 2020
Some of the most meditative, spiritual sounds we've ever heard from the great Josh Abrams – a record that goes way past his more familiar work on bass – even though that's pretty darn great! For this set, Abrams reaches out to a host of different instruments – including the harmonium, dulcimer, and guimbiri – as well as additional percussion, and acoustic bass as well – all instruments he uses in this really rich, textured way – layring the organic sounds with contributions from Jason Adasiewicz on vibes, Emmett Kelly on guitar, and Frank Rosaly on drums. The record also features a few more really compelling instruments – a bit of Arp from Jim Baker, harmonium from Lisa Alvarado, and autoharp from Ben Boye – instruments that come in towards the end of the record, to make things even more hypnotic and mesmerizing. Titles include "Dolphin Cave Dazzling", "Mysterious Delirious Fluke Of The Beyond", "Abide In Sunset", "A Lucky Stone", and "Soul Talisman". LP, Vinyl record album

Joshua AbramsRepresencing ... LP
Eremite/Aguirre (Belgium), 2012. New Copy (reissue)... About December 18, 2020
Brilliant work from composer/arranger/creator Joshua Abrams – one of the most creative figures to come out of the Chicago scene in the past couple decades – no hyperbole necessary! On Represencing Josh is largely working with the guimbri – the North African traditional string instrument – plus a bit of organ, harps, and bells – used sparely alongside the core instrument. The guimbri gives the record an earthy, traditional base – as Abrams reaches out to inspire a lager ensemble that includes Chad Taylor on drums and gong, Nicole Mitchell on flute, Michael Zerang on tambourine, Jeff Parker and Emmett Kelly on guitars, Tomeka Reid on cello, David Boykin on tenor sax, and Jason Stein on bass clarinet – all familiar players, with whom Abrams has worked often – coming together here with a very spiritual vibe. Titles include "San Anto", "Represencing", "Moon Hunger", "Sound Talisman", "Sungazer", "The BA", "Enter Mountain Amulet", and "Cloud Walking". LP, Vinyl record album

A limited vinyl collection of work from the legendary Chicago pianist Muhal Richard Abrams – one of the founding members of the AACM, a hell of an improviser, and a musician who's also featured here with a focus on both his larger compositional vision, and some of his rare electronic performances! Side one features the classic "The Bird Song" from the late 60s – a long piece that features Anthony Braxton on alto, Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre on tenor, Leroy Jenkins on violin, Thurman Barker on drums, and Abrams on piano and clarinet – plus some vocals from David Moore. Next are two shorter electronic pieces from 1989 and 1995 – "Conversations With The Three Of Me" and "Think All Focus One". The set finishes with the title track of Abrams' great album "Spihumonesty" – with Muhal on piano and electronics, Amina Claudine Myers on electric piano and organ, Roscoe Mitchell on alto and flute, Yousef Yancey on theremin, and George Lewis on trombone and electronics. George Adams, Martin Hannibal Peterson & FriendsMore Sightings ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1984. New Copy ... $16.99
An unusual date from tenorist George Adams – recorded right around the same time as his legendary records with Don Pullen, but instead a more unusual partnership with the great trumpeter Hannibal Marvin Peterson! The pairing is great – and both hornmen soar out and really get plenty of room to do their thing – in a mixture of hardbop energy and more spiritual currents, with help from John Scofield on guitar, Ron Burton on piano, Walter Schmocker on bass, and Allen Nelson on drums. The energy is maybe a bit more like some of Peterson's late 70s records than some of the Adams/Pullen material – and that quality makes the live date a nice standout in the catalog of both players. Titles include "Soul Brothers", "Do We Know Where We Are Going", "Melanie", "More Sightings", and "Don't Take Your Love From Me". CD

Soul Note (Italy), 1979. Very Good+ ... $11.99
A trashy cover, but a great little record – one that's filled with wonderfully sensitive sounds from the team of George Adams and Don Pullen – working here in some really relaxed, soulful territory! The album's got a laidback feel that's a nice change from some of the more cerebral modes of both players – almost a bit more spontaneous than some of their other recordings together, with a different sort of spirit on each track, and a style that slides easily between different modes of jazz. Adams plays tenor and flute, and sings on one track – Pullen's on acoustic piano, and other players include Cameron Brown on bass and Dannie Richmond on drums. Titles include "Double Arc Jake", "Autumn Song", "Don't Lose Control", "Remember", and "Places & Faces". LP, Vinyl record album

Solidly soaring work from tenorist George Adams – recording live here with pianist Don Pullen, one of his best musical partners during the 80s! The album's got a bit more of a bite than some of the pair's studio sessions – a bit straighter overall, but recorded with a nice degree of energy, and some long tracks that really let both players open up nicely – in a combo that also features John Scofield on guitar, Cameron Brown on bass, and Dannie Richmond on drums. The inclusion of Scofield's guitar changes up the group's sound in a nice way – adding in some more chromatic elements that really stand out – and titles include "IJ", "Flame Games", "Song Everlasting", and "Forever Lovers". Johnny AdamsI Won't Cry – The Complete Ric & Ron Singles 1959 to 1964 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
The best work ever from the great Johnny Adams – a Crescent City soul singer with a hell of a lot of power, brought into wonderfully strong focus here on these early recordings for the Ric & Ron label! Johnny recorded later in Nashville and Jackson, but he's never sounded better than on these early sides – which have a depth of feeling and timeless power that we'd rank right up there with some of the most important names during the early years of soul. The material is nicely free of overdone New Orleans styles – and instead has this care and class that really reaches out from the roots of the material, to showcase Johnny as a singer with a great deal of care and class, but one who's still able to let loose in the best deep soul modes too. Adams hardly ever got the chart coverage he should have deserved – but this 24 track set will more than support his strong legacy – with detailed notes, and a stunning array of tracks that include "Closer To You", "Teach Me To Forget", "Who You Are", "Showdown", "A Losing Battle", "Life Is Just A Struggle", "Cold Cold Heart", "Coming Around The Mountain", and "Nowhere To Go". Afro 7 (Finland), 1987. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Fantastic grooves from Amabano – an obscure group from Burundi, on a record that was initially only issued in the Soviet Union! That strange lack of exposure is no reflection on the music at all, though – as these guys are wickedly funky, and play with the sharpness and rawness of some of the best West African funk combos from the mid 70s, and not the smoother, more well-produced elements of the world music scene of the late 80s! Percussion is quite strong on most numbers, as are the ringing tones of the guitar – and while a few tracks have female vocals in the lead, others have an especially strong instrumental groove. Our two favorites are "Ilunga Diamond's Touch" and "Amsterdam Ticket" – both of which we'd put up next to better known Nigerian funk classics – and other tracks include "Munzanire", "Ewe Burundi", and "Nter'amajane". A really wonderful, very organic album from the duo of Anthony Braxton on reeds and Georg Grawe on piano – a set that's got a looser, freer vibe than some of Braxton's other music of the time – and which maybe takes us back to the spirit of some of earliest work on the Chicago scene! Grawe's got a nicely pointed style of playing – notes that are free, but clear and distinct – which seems to almost produced a grittier style from Braxton at times, as he blows a range of instruments that include soprano sax, clarinet, alto, and flute. The titles are free of the more academic codes that Braxton usually brings to play, and the music is too – on selections that are simply titled "Duet 1", "Duet 2", and "Duet 3". CD

Brooklyn Dreams recorded in Munich and LA, but the album's got a surprisingly soulful club feel that almost matches its New York reference! Teutonic disco maestro Thor Baldursson handled the arrangements on the record, and we were a bit suspicious about it at first – but apart from a few colder electric keyboard parts, the main groove here focuses on the vocals of the male trio – and they trade leads and harmonize in a way that's clearly inspired by lots of east coast groups from earlier years. Glen CampbellGlen Travis Campbell/I Knew Jesus/I Remember Hank Williams ... CD
Capitol/BGO (UK), 1972/1973. New Copy 2CD ... $10.99 16.99
A trio of early 70s albums from Glen Campbell – all of them a lot more obscure than his hits! Glen Travis Campbell has a cover proclaiming that the set is "a new musical path" – and producer Jimmy Bowen works with bigger backings from Larry Muhuberac to use soaring strings next to the acoustic core, in ways that push Glen into some of the more soulful expressions he had to offer. The approach is a bit hard to describe, but it's different both from country roots, and from Jimmy Webb territory – that majestic Glen Campbell sound rising up nicely – on tunes that include "One Last Time", "I Will Never Pass This Way Again", "Sweet Fantasy", "Running Scared", "Just For What I Am", and "The Last Thing On My Mind". I Knew Jesus is a record that continues the further exploration of Glen Campbell's vocal range – with some mellow fluid moments that are awash in deeper trills, mixed with more upfront tunes that do a great job of unlocking more of the country currents in Glen's talents – a great shift, and one that would come on even more strongly in his mid 70s return to fame. The set includes a great version of the Kinky Friedman song "Sold American" – one we maybe like even better than Kinky's – plus "I Take It On Home", "I Want To Be With You Always", "Give Me Back That Old Familiar Feeling", "You're The One", and "On This Road". On the final album, Glen Campbell takes on the music of Hank Williams – but in a way that often has the sort of dreamy haze that goes with the "I Remember" in the title! The songs are all Hank's, but the presentation isn't gritty honky tonk – and instead uses fuller backings with Glen's lead vocals, almost as if the whole thing were done in the mid 60s by Chet Atkins at RCA! Jimmy Bowen's at the helm, but there's backup singers and fuller strings than before – which really changes up the Campbell takes on tunes that include "Cold Cold Heart", "Half As Much", "Your Cheatin Heart", "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry", and "You Win Again". Doug CarnAdams Apple ... LP
Black Jazz, 1974. Very Good ... $11.99
The last album in a legendary run of music from keyboardist Doug Carn – his final album for the Black Jazz label, and a set that pushes even farther than his previous efforts! Jean Carn isn't in the group this time around, but the set does feature a totally great twin-vocal approach – with singing by Joyce Green and John Conner, blending their voices together in a style that's right up there with the most righteous 70s jazz experiments by Horace Silver or Billy Gault! This vocal balance really brings a new sort of power to Carn's music – furthering the righteous spirit of earlier years with a hell of a lot of energy – also aided by great instrumental work from Ronnie Laws on tenor and soprano sax, Thurman Green on trombone, Calvin Keys and Nathan Page on guitars, and Big Black on percussion. Titles include the classic "Higher Ground" – plus "Adam's Apple", "Western Sunrise", "Chant", "Sanctuary", "The Messenger", and "Mighty Mighty". LP, Vinyl record album

Al Casey/Billy Butler/Jackie WilliamsGuitar Odyssey ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1974. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
A really fantastic album of jazz guitar – one that features two masters from an earlier era, both recorded in the 70s in a really stripped-down setting! The group just features the drums of Jackie Williams with the guitars of Al Casey and Billy Butler – both players who have a highly rhythmic style in their music, which they draw from strongly throughout – as one guitarist will solo while the other will provide more of a rhythmic pulse – and Butler does an especially nice job of changing up his guitar "voice" from track to track. Most tunes are standards, but the setting really transforms them – and titles include "Ghost Of A Chance", "Tea For Two", "Mack The Knife", "Who", "Al & Billy Fast Blues", "Indian Summer", "Three Little Words", and "Al & Billy Blues". ✨✧ Curtis Clark with Louis MoholoDreams Deferred ... CD
Nimbus, 1993. New Copy ... $9.99
2 great sessions from pianist Curtis Clark – a crucially overlooked player, and one with a style that bridges the modernist gap between Thelonious Monk and Cecil Taylor! The first 5 tracks on the set are all (coincidentally enough!) tunes by Monk – played with a trio that includes Wayne Dockery on bass and Louis Moholo on drums, in a style that really changes up the mood of the original compositions, yet still keeps all their angular charm. Titles include "Misterioso", "Monk's Mood", "Light Blue", and the great "Worry Later/San Francisco Holiday". The remaining 6 tracks on the CD feature the trio with Dockery and Moholo, expanded to a septet with players that include Tristan Honsiger on cello, Felicity Provan on trumpet, and Tobias Delius on tenor sax. These tunes are nearly all originals by Clark, and some of them are a fair bit straighter than his other work of the time – almost in a soulbop mode on the best numbers. Titles include "Sean", "Two Shadows In The Mist", "Nelson", and "Diaphane". CD

Rupert Clemendore/John Buddy WilliamsLe Jazz Primitif From Trinidad ... CD
Cook, 1961. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
Nothing primitif about this jazz, because the music has a really haunting feel – one that's filled with sophisticated changes and compelling instrumentation – served up in ways that are unlike anything else we can think of! Side one of the record features the combo of percussionist Rupert Clemendore, who also plays vibes on the record – with Bert Innis on piano, Frankie Francis on sax, and Les Sargeant on guitar – all in a set of tunes that skittishly groove on angular rhythms, yet also have a sense of warmth as well. Titles include "Bongo Mood", "We Mambo", "Princess Charming", and "The Fly". Side two features equally amazing music from the group of bassist John Buddy Williams – a combo with lots of heavy percussion and a definite Latin bent in the rhythms, plus "doublers" who play either sax or clarinet at the same time – making for a really wide, spread-apart sound as they snake through the melodies! These tracks were all recorded live, with a really festive feel – and titles include "Alma Llanera", "She Pon Top", "Shoemaker Shop", "Man In Dey", and "Last Night The Landlord Nearly Killed Me". CD

Sackville (Canada), 1978. Near Mint- ... $11.99
One of the most deeply spiritual albums ever recorded by pianist Anthony Davis – a classic 70s set for Sackville, done with a quartet that includes Leroy Jenkins on violin, Abdul Wadud on cello, and Pheeroan Ak Laff on drums! The use of violin and cello next to Davis' piano is extremely evocative – and gives the record a feel that's unlike other improvised sets of the time – some darker, yet more sensitive sound textures – really rich in feeling, and building out strongly from a solo passage that begins the album. Titles include "Of Blues & Dreams", "Estraven", and the extended "Suite For Another World". LP, Vinyl record album

Folkways, 1978. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
The first album from obscure folk singer Guy Davis – a set that's got a much earthier feel than you'd expect from its late 70s release! Most tracks just feature Davis on vocals and acoustic guitar – singing in a style that's slightly blues-inflected in the vocals, but with playful themes that are definitely in the more confident territory of American folk – clearly influenced by some of the folk/soul experiments by others in the early 70s. Titles include "Nappy Hair", "Try To Catch The Colors", "Never Fart In Front Of Company", "Friendly Feet", and "When I'm Gone". CD

A few tracks also feature vocals by Beate – and the overall style of the set is somewhere between funky ECM and early 80s New York bass-driven avant jazz funk, such as the work of Melvin Gibbs. The more modern touches of the Jazzland style make the record sound fresher than that description might imply – and titles include "Pushing The Beat", "Victim Of Own Desires", "Everlasting Star", "Dreams That Went Astray", "Clandestined Band", and "You Passed Me Like A Wind". Great soundtrack work from Brian Eno – a record that's maybe more stark than some of his other work of the past few decades – but in a way that's no surprise, given that the music is for a film about the brilliant minimalist designer Dieter Rams! There are sounds here that recall some of Eno's late 70s collaborations with Cluster, while others have more of the organic, acoustic qualities of his own ambient work – and the pairing of two thoughtful geniuses for one project is a perfect match. Garner grooves nicely here – finding an almost renewed energy for the 60s, but still hitting all those highly-rhythmic modes we love so much in his early work! The recording quality is great – lots of bold echo from the piano, and even a bit of Erroll's grunting vocalizations somewhere in the mix – kind of an extra added emphasis that sounds great next to the bass of Eddie Calhoun and drums of Kelly Martin. Pretty great stuff – even though Wendall Harrison has strayed far from the Tribe Records sound of his earlier years! The record takes the spiritual post-Coltrane jazz of Harrison's earlier days, and infuses it with a smooth fusion approach that's clearly an attempt to reach a wider audience with a soulful message – giving the whole thing a blend of soul and spiritual jazz that comes off surprisingly well overall! There's some nice dark edges to the record that really keep things interesting – maybe imagine Larry Mizell producing some of the more off-beat albums on Strata East – and there's a bit of vocals on the set, which also features work from Phil Ranelin on trombone. Tracks include "Where Am I", "Sea Minor Blues", "Take Time Out", and "Dreams Of A Love Supreme". CD features bonus tracks – "No Turnin Back", "Rocket Love", and the unreleased "Patrina's Dance". CD

Ramsey LewisFunky Serenity/Golden Hits/Solar Wind/Sun Goddess ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99
A quadruple-header from Ramsey Lewis – four albums from his great 70s electric period on Columbia Records! First up is Funky Serenity – sweet electric funk from Ramsey Lewis! The album's one of his best from the 70s – and it's got Ramsey on Fender Rhodes, electric harpsichord, and other keyboards, grooving away in an open-ended 70s mode that still retains all the heavy soul of his classic work for Chess. Morris Jennings adds in some very nice percussion with his drum work, and Cleveland Eaton's on funky bass, giving the set a strong bottom groove. Features the sublime sample cut "My Love For You", a great version of "Knights In White Satin" that's done with a weird spacey groove, plus the tracks "Kufany Mapenzi (Making Love)", "Serene Funk", "What It Is!", and "Dreams". Golden Hits isn't a "best of", but instead has Ramsey and his funky mid 70s trio with Morris Jennings and Cleveland Eaton revisiting some of his best loved material from the Cadet years, but with the groovy Rhodes and wah wah sound that we dig so much about his CBS recordings. Unlike some of the other records from this period, the group's nice and stripped down, just the electric piano, bass and drums, so the groove's nice and wide open, Ramsey and company popping along with the sanctified soulful vibe of his 60s work, but updating their sound with some nice electric touches. 9 numbers in all: "Hang On Sloopy", "Blues For The Night Owl", "Hi-Heel Sneakers", "Carmen", "Delilah", "Wade In The Water", "Slippin' Into Darkness", "Somethin' You Got", and "The In Crowd". Solar Wind was cut smack dab in the middle of Ramsey's glory days at Columbia Records – with great production help and work on bass from the mighty Cleveland Eaton! The style is nice and lean, with just some occasional fuller touches – and Ramsey plays plenty of Fender Rhodes, in addition to bits of Arp and moog too – in a setting that's mostly trio, with a few guest players stepping into the mix from track to track! There's a nice degree of fuzz at points, thanks to added help from Steve Cropper – and titles include a great funky version of "Summer Breeze", plus "Solar Wind", "Come Down In Time", "Love for A Day", "Hummingbird", "Jamaican Marketplace", and "Sweet & Tender You". Sun Goddess is one of our favorite Ramsey Lewis albums ever – and a perfect summation of the genius that was brewing on the Chicago scene in the late 60s and early 70s! The album has Ramsey working strongly with Earth Wind & Fire – no surprise, given his close ties to Maurice White, who was the drummer in Ramsey's trio before starting his own group – and the shared relationship both artists had with producer Charles Stepney! The three were all key parts of the late 60s sound at Chess Records – but here, they've brought the same soulful energy to Columbia – working in a wider, more mature groove for the 70s – one that has Lewis' wicked Fender Rhodes lines stretching out strongly over tight, compressed, funky lines from EWF! The centerpiece of the set is the massive 7 minute "Sun Goddess", but there's lots of other nice ones like "Living For The City", "Gemini Rising", and "Jungle Strut". Funky, electric, and sublimely wonderful all the way through! CD

Cadet, 1966. Good ... $0.99
Goin Latin, and goin groovy too – thanks to some wonderful arrangements from Chicago soul legend Richard Evans – who really helps Ramsey Lewis open up his sound on the set! The format's less straight Latin than you might expect from the title – and Evans brings in a bouncing, bassy bottom that's still got a strongly American flavor – not really Latin Soul, but something of a blend of Latin and bossa elements with some of Evans' more soul-styled modes of the time! The mix of styles is really great – Ramsey's Chicago groove taken a bit south of the border – and tracks include the heavy smoker "Hey Mrs Jones", plus "Summer Samba", "Free Again", "Blue Bongo", "Function At The Junction", "One Two Three", "I'll Wait For You", and "Spanish Grease". Ramsey Lewis had such great success with his first album of Christmas instrumentals for Chess Records, he soon hopped back in the studio for a second record – but one with a very distinct difference! This time around, the trio's a bit unusual – in that it features regular bassist Eldee Young, but also the great Steve McCall on drums – a percussionist who'd later really flourish in the 70s, and gain great fame for his work in the group Air! The presence of McCall is no surprise, though – Malachi Favors and Muhal Richard Abrams also make appearances on early 60s Chess jazz albums – but it does give the record a nicely special sort of sound, as does the added instrumentation on some tracks too. About half the set features the trio, and the rest features a bigger group that's arranged by King Fleming and Will Jackson – jazz trio with a bit of strings, including some nice harp, and a touch of trombone from John Avant. About half the set features the trio, and the rest features a bigger group that's arranged by King Fleming and Will Jackson – jazz trio with a bit of strings, including some nice harp, and a touch of trombone from John Avant. Titles include "We Three Kings", "Snowfall", "Plum Puddin", "Little Drummer Boy", "Snowbound", "Egg Nog", and "Jingle Bells". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label stereo Cadet pressing with deep groove. Cover and labels have a drillhole through the center. Cover has light surface wear and some aging.)

✨✧ John McLaughlinElectric Dreams ... LP
Columbia, 1978. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A definite electric dream for guitarist John McLaughlin – especially given that he's got Carlos Santana working here on the set! The album's very much in the best spirit of McLaughlin's late 70s work – still fusion, and still fairly electric – but also a nice change from his more jamming roots, thanks to the inclusion of some key acoustic elements from time to time. There's a nice sense of spaciousness here that shows lessons learned from McLaughlin's more meditative years – elements that clearly set the record apart from some of the too-slick or overdone fusion of the time. Titles include "New York On My Mind", "Friendship", "Phenomenon Compulsion", "My Foolish Heart", and "Do You Hear The Voice You Left Behind". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has light wear and some aging.)
