✨✧ Luis BacalovDjango (limited edition colored vinyl) ... LP
GDM/AMS (Italy), 1966. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $16.99 35.98
A dark little western soundtrack from Luis Bacalov – one that's quite brooding overall, despite a rather catchy vocal tune on the title! There's some very odd instrumentation here – watery piano lines, floating bits of guitar, off-tuned strings – all used at different intervals, and in different ways – without as strongly of a unified feel as other albums of this nature. But it's those shifting sounds that make the record great – always creating an unsettling sort of mood, and one that's almost always in the darker, starker side of the spectrum. Bruno Nicolai handled orchestrations, and titles include "Blue Dark Waltz", "Django (Waiting)", "Django (Love Moment", "La Corsa (2nd Version)", "Vamonos Muchachos", "Duello Nel Fango", "Town Of Silence", "Epera Y Ataque", "Fruscii Notturni", "Django (Rage)" and more. Gato BarbieriLast Tango In Paris (180 gram pressing) ... LP
AMS (Italy), 1972. New Copy ... $28.99 29.99
One of the greatest moments ever from saxophonist Gato Barbieri – and that's saying a lot, given that by the time of this recording, he'd already had a great 60s run as an avant jazz musician, and started the 70s with a string of albums that criss-crossed jazz and South American musical styles! Yet Last Tango In Paris may well be Barbieri's crowning achievement – a sublime record that draws on all the richer, more emotive themes of his Latin America projects, but gives them new focus in the arrangements of Oliver Nelson – who ensures that the music is never too cheesy or overdone – quite a feat, given the sexy setting of the film! Gato draws a lot from Argentine tango, but often uses his own sax solos in place of a more familiar bandoneon – in a way that pushes the "new tango" mode of the time even farther – especially when set amidst Nelson's wonderful orchestrations. Titles include many versions of the "Last Tango" theme, plus the tracks "Girl In Black", "Jeanne", "Why Did She Choose You?", "It's Over", and "Fake Ophelia". LP, Vinyl record album

Giancarlo Bigazzi & Marco FalagianiMediterraneo (clear blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
AMS (Italy), 1991. New Copy ... $18.99
A really sweet little soundtrack to the 1991, WWII set film Mediterraneo – with warm instrumentation on Greek and Middle Eastern string, percussion and wind instruments – seamlessly blended with drums guitars and saxes! The soundtrack was composed by Giancarlo Bigazzi & Marco Falagiani – with nice, subtle and timelessly appealing moments – our favorite bits played on the ethnic instruments – including santouri, bouzouki, gavala and percussion. Titles include "L'Arrivo", "Il Tempo Passa", "Aziz Il Turco", "Ballo In Piazza", "Cornamuse", "Mediterraneo", "Lontani", "Il Pope", "L'incontro", "Lo Sbarco" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Calibro 35High Tension Vol 35 – Calibro 35 Plays Lesiman ... LP
AMS (Italy), 2019. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Maybe one of the coolest records we've ever heard from Calibro 35 – and certainly one of the funkiest – thanks in part to a selection of tracks that are pulled from the catalog of Italian sound library genius Lesiman! The music is very hip – unusual sonic touches alongside tight basslines, great drums, and riffing guitar – all recorded with a mode that seems more open, airy, and inventive than any other Calibro 35 record too! And oddly, even though the group are reaching for a more direct reference to a sound and style they've already been exploring, the whole thing is maybe their most individual album overall – and the group's greatest calling card to date. Titles include "Milano 7", "Play Car", "Players/Bagliori", "Moto Centripeto", "Macchine Nello Spazio", "Schegge", and "Ricognizione Sulle Macerie". LP, Vinyl record album

Magnetic System (Vince Tempera, Franco Bixio & Fabio Frizzi)Godzilla/Escape ... 7-inch
AMS (Italy), Late 70s. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... $18.99
A tremendous trio from the Italian soundtrack scene of the 70s – Franco Bixio, Fabio Frizzi, and Vince Tempera – all great talents on their own, but a real powerhouse of grooves when they got together on work like this! The Bixio-Fizzi-Tempera name always meant something extra-groovy on a record – either an extra-funky soundtrack with lots of weird touches, or the kind of cool Italian single that might be somewhere between sound library funk and more progressive material – a really rich array of sounds that came from the trio during their years working together in the mid 70s! This special 7" single features two of the grooviest tracks from their one album together – "Godzilla" and "Escape". 7-inch, Vinyl record

Riz OrtolaniNon Si Sevizia Un Paperino (180 gram red vinyl pressing) ... LP
AMS/Quartet (Spain), 1972. New Copy ... $34.99
Dark genius from Italian composer Riz Ortolani – very spooky sounds written for a film whose English language translation is "Don't Torture A Duckling"! Non Si Sevizia Un Paperino has these amazing string passages that really creep us out – played with razor-sharpness and echoey quality on the best cuts, in an almost Psycho-like style that's really wonderful! Mellower cuts on the soundtrack have a nicely contrasting sweeter approach, with a few warm 70s-styled melodies – and the score is represented by 12 titles from the original album, including "Quei Giorni Insieme A Te", which features vocals by Omella Vanoni. ✨✧ Piero UmilianiLe Isole Dell'Amore (180 gram blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Cinevox/AMS (Italy), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99
A sweet little island-based soundtrack from Piero Umiliani – one that's served up in just the right blend of exotica and jazz! Some elements here resonate with Umiliani's more familiar Italian scores of the time – some sweet keyboards that trip out nicely at a level that's a few notches down from funk, with maybe a bit of bossa in the mix – while others add in a bit more percussion or strings, to flesh things out with some sunnier, more tropical elements that are a nice contrast to some of the other moments. There's a bit of vocals in the mix, but most tunes are instrumental – and titles include "Le Isolle Dell'Amore", "Tamoure Titoli", "Papete Aru", "Vele Al Vento", "Comunita' Hippy", "La Danza Del Turista", "Corale Isole Dal Tema", "Palme E Cocchi", and "Nuku". CAM/AMS (Italy), Late 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A very cool collection of work from Goblin – the prog rock group whose horror soundtracks really helped transform the sound of Italian cinema in the 70s! Goblin's earlier music was more jamming – but here, they really revel in space as much as they do sound – leaving plenty of room for keyboard lines, guitar bits, and the kind of slightly-funky elements that make their music so great – in a package that pulls together some of their best cuts from the films Profondo Rosso, Roller, Chi, La Via Della Drogsa, Zombi, and Suspiria. Titles include "La Via Della Droga", "Chi (parts 1 & 2)", "Death Dies", "Trumpet's Flight", "E Suono Rock", "Zaratozom", "Zombi", "Suspiria", and "Roller". Includes liner notes and memorabilia by Fabio Capuzzo! LP, Vinyl record album

Carosello/AMS (Italy), 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really spooky soundtrack from Pino Donaggio – even if the instrumentation is somewhat standard! The music is for the great Nicolas Roeg film Don't Look Now – set in a slowly rotting Venice, and filled with moody mystery and hints of horror – but all elements that never fully get exposed or explained in the narrative! Donaggio's music is a bit like that – outwardly familiar, but always a bit unsettling – but in ways that are very different from the more direct approach of standard Italian horror work of the 70s. Karen AbbottSin In The Second City – Madams, Ministers, Playboys & The Battle For American's Soul ... Book
Random House, 2007. New Copy ... $4.99 17.00
Our fair city of Chicago has always been a pretty sleazy place – but back at the start of the 20th century, there was a higher kind of sex trade going on – one that featured high class houses of ill-reputed, and well-educated hookers – which led to a lot more crossing over between the brothels and the boardrooms! This well-done book looks at a very specific time in the city's history – a point when Chicago was really coming into its own – both as a city of industry and a city of sin – a place where reformers rubbed shoulders with gangsters, as part of the new urban experiment. The book does a great job of tracing this larger narrative, in a way that's hardly as salacious as you might expect – a different sort of snapshot than the Devil In The White City. 364 pages, softcover. Karl (UK), 1968/1980/1989/1995. New Copy ... $22.99
A limited vinyl collection of work from the legendary Chicago pianist Muhal Richard Abrams – one of the founding members of the AACM, a hell of an improviser, and a musician who's also featured here with a focus on both his larger compositional vision, and some of his rare electronic performances! Side one features the classic "The Bird Song" from the late 60s – a long piece that features Anthony Braxton on alto, Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre on tenor, Leroy Jenkins on violin, Thurman Barker on drums, and Abrams on piano and clarinet – plus some vocals from David Moore. Next are two shorter electronic pieces from 1989 and 1995 – "Conversations With The Three Of Me" and "Think All Focus One". The set finishes with the title track of Abrams' great album "Spihumonesty" – with Muhal on piano and electronics, Amina Claudine Myers on electric piano and organ, Roscoe Mitchell on alto and flute, Yousef Yancey on theremin, and George Lewis on trombone and electronics. Muhal Richard AbramsHearinga Suite ... CD
Black Saint (Italy), 1989. Used ... $8.99
A beautiful suite of tracks from Muhal Richard Abrams – filled with those amazing colors and tones that really developed in his music during the 80s! The ensemble here is a bit larger than most of the other large groups Abrams was using during the decade – a great assemblage of horn players on both brass and reeds, mixed with percussion, vibes, and a bit of cello. There's a surprising amount of space in the compositions – and we almost get the feeling that some group members are trading off with one another, sitting out to avoid overcrowding on horns – although we can't say for sure, since we're only hearing and not witnessing the performance. Players include Jack Walrath, Frank Gordon, and Cecil Bridgewater on trumpets; Clifrton Anderson and Dick Griffin on trombone; Marty Erlich, Patience Higgins, Charles Davis, and John Purcell on a variety of reeds; Diedre Murray on cello, Fred Hopkins on bass, Warren Smith on vibes, Andrew Cyrille on drums, and Abrams himself on piano and synth. The music is dedicated to Steve McCall and Raphael Don Garrett – both late of the AACM – and titles include "Hearinga", "Seesall", "Aura Of Thought Things", "Oldfotalk", "Finditnow", and "Bermix". CD

✨✧ George AdamsParadise Space Shuttle ... LP
Timeless, 1978. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A tremendous moment for the great George Adams as a leader – a record that won the reedman widespread attention after some key work in the bigger groups of Gil Evans and Charles Mingus! Adams is a searing, soulful player right from the start – stepping out strongly on tenor at the kickoff of the record, but also blowing some flute with this moodier, more spiritual tone that really deepens our appreciation of his talents as a musician. The rest of the group is filled with similar spiritual energy – and includes Ron Burton on piano, Don Pate on bass, Al Foster on drums, and Azzedin Weston on percussion. The style is nicely different than some of George's later work with Don Pullen – maybe a bit more straightforward, but in a great way that really unlocks his voice as a leader – and titles include "Funk A Roonie Peacock", "Metamorphosis for Mingus", "Paradise Space Shuttle", and "Intentions". George AdamsSuite For Swingers ... LP
Horo (Italy), 1976. Near Mint- ... $49.99
A slightly confused album, but not without some nice moments! The set is one of a few that Adams recorded for the Horo label in Italy – and it features a quintet with Don Pullen on piano and keyboards, David Friesen on bass, Dannie Richmond on drums, and Afonso Vieira on percussion. The title track is kind of a messed-up avant number that really doesn't go anywhere, and which takes up all of side one. "Blues By The River" is an unfortunate blues tune that doesn't deliver either. BUT the album is capped off by one great number – the 15 minute "Melodic Rhapsody", a really wonderful mellow tune that mixes electric piano and tenor work, in a cool but soulfully spiritual style, similar to the best later Marion Brown work on Impulse. This track is great, and totally worth the album for us! LP, Vinyl record album

Solidly soaring work from tenorist George Adams – recording live here with pianist Don Pullen, one of his best musical partners during the 80s! The album's got a bit more of a bite than some of the pair's studio sessions – a bit straighter overall, but recorded with a nice degree of energy, and some long tracks that really let both players open up nicely – in a combo that also features John Scofield on guitar, Cameron Brown on bass, and Dannie Richmond on drums. The inclusion of Scofield's guitar changes up the group's sound in a nice way – adding in some more chromatic elements that really stand out – and titles include "IJ", "Flame Games", "Song Everlasting", and "Forever Lovers". Johnny AdamsI Won't Cry – The Complete Ric & Ron Singles 1959 to 1964 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
The best work ever from the great Johnny Adams – a Crescent City soul singer with a hell of a lot of power, brought into wonderfully strong focus here on these early recordings for the Ric & Ron label! Johnny recorded later in Nashville and Jackson, but he's never sounded better than on these early sides – which have a depth of feeling and timeless power that we'd rank right up there with some of the most important names during the early years of soul. The material is nicely free of overdone New Orleans styles – and instead has this care and class that really reaches out from the roots of the material, to showcase Johnny as a singer with a great deal of care and class, but one who's still able to let loose in the best deep soul modes too. Adams hardly ever got the chart coverage he should have deserved – but this 24 track set will more than support his strong legacy – with detailed notes, and a stunning array of tracks that include "Closer To You", "Teach Me To Forget", "Who You Are", "Showdown", "A Losing Battle", "Life Is Just A Struggle", "Cold Cold Heart", "Coming Around The Mountain", and "Nowhere To Go". Warm audio therapy from Nathan Adams – an artist who works here in a sublime blend of club and soul – with a style that maybe recalls the best of the Naked Music generation – or maybe the tightest work of Peven Everett too! There's a warm glow to most of the album – but not in a way that's too smooth or slick – just seductively poised to groove along with Adams' great lyrics! Most tunes have a positive feel that fits the upbeat sound of the music – and titles include "Melody", "Don't Break My Heart", "Fade Away", "Chasing Love", "Stay Away", and "Afraid Of The Dark". CD

Pepper AdamsCool Sound Of Pepper Adams ... CD
Savoy, 1957. Used ... $11.99
A fantastic album from Pepper Adams – one of his best, and an incredibly swinging session that will make you forget that he's playing a heavy baritone! At some level, the session shouldn't work so well – as it's got a rhythm group that's not particularly hard-hitting – with Hank Jones on piano, George Duvivier on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – and Adams' baritone is matched with the euphonium of Bernard McKinney, which should weigh the session down into even deeper depths. But for some reason, there was magic in the air when the album was recorded – and the group gels together perfectly, slinkily sliding through the tunes with all the coolness implied in the title, yet with a deep deep dose of Detroit soul from Adams and McKinney. Tracks are all nice and long, and titles include "Bloos Blooze Blues", "Skippy", and "Like What Is This?" CD

World Pacific/Mighty Quinn, 1957. Used ... $9.99
A real lost treasure from Pacific Jazz – a rare late 50s west coast session from Pepper Adams, featuring the amazing baritonist in a group with Lee Katzman on trumpet, Jimmy Rowles on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums! The sound is incredible – on a par with that rare few of Adams' other magnificent albums as a leader – modern, yet soulful, and with a fluid feel that makes it hard to believe that Pepper's working with a baritone sax. Adams' work is always top-shelf, but this album's an even further cut above – and its proof that Pepper was one of the strongest talents burning in jazz in the late 50s! Tracks are all longish, and feature some nice unusual numbers that include "Minor Mishap", "Blackout Blues", "High Step", "5021", and "Zec". CD also features the bonus track "Four Funky People". CD

Impro (France), 1977. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A really great setting for Pepper Adams – a rare European live date that has his baritone sax matched with the mighty talents of the George Arvanitas trio! Arvanitas' piano is always great, but we especially love the rhythm work here by bassist Jacky Samson and drummer Charles Saudrais – two amazing players who help Pepper find a groove on the record that's quite different than usual. The set begins with the 11 minute "Bossa Noveau" – a Brazilian-styled groover that reminds us a lot of the Samson/Saudrais work with Marco Di Marco and Chris Woods – and the same sort of vibe follows on the 17 minute "Min & Maj Blues" too. "Ephemera" and "Body & Soul" are a bit straighter, but totally great. LP, Vinyl record album

Afro 7 (Finland), 1987. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Fantastic grooves from Amabano – an obscure group from Burundi, on a record that was initially only issued in the Soviet Union! That strange lack of exposure is no reflection on the music at all, though – as these guys are wickedly funky, and play with the sharpness and rawness of some of the best West African funk combos from the mid 70s, and not the smoother, more well-produced elements of the world music scene of the late 80s! Percussion is quite strong on most numbers, as are the ringing tones of the guitar – and while a few tracks have female vocals in the lead, others have an especially strong instrumental groove. Our two favorites are "Ilunga Diamond's Touch" and "Amsterdam Ticket" – both of which we'd put up next to better known Nigerian funk classics – and other tracks include "Munzanire", "Ewe Burundi", and "Nter'amajane". Despite the colonialist overtones of the project – sort of the African equivalent to Porgy & Bess, at least in terms of authenticity – this groundbreaking musical was actually a crucial moment in the development of South African jazz. ✨✧ Anthony Braxton – Georg Grawe DuoAmsterdam 1991 ... CD
Okka Disk, 1991/1997. New Copy Gatefold ... $9.99 13.99
A really wonderful, very organic album from the duo of Anthony Braxton on reeds and Georg Grawe on piano – a set that's got a looser, freer vibe than some of Braxton's other music of the time – and which maybe takes us back to the spirit of some of earliest work on the Chicago scene! Grawe's got a nicely pointed style of playing – notes that are free, but clear and distinct – which seems to almost produced a grittier style from Braxton at times, as he blows a range of instruments that include soprano sax, clarinet, alto, and flute. The titles are free of the more academic codes that Braxton usually brings to play, and the music is too – on selections that are simply titled "Duet 1", "Duet 2", and "Duet 3". CD

Anthony Braxton with Muhal Richard AbramsDuets 1976 ... LP
Arista, 1976. Near Mint- ... $11.99
The rich tones of Muhal's piano provide a perfect foil for Braxton, and one that gets him playing a wide range of styles on sopranino, clarinet, bass clarinet, and alto. The whole album resonates with a soulfulness that's not always apparent in Braxton's other work from the time – and the melding of these two giant talents from the AACM is a rare treat. Titles include "Nickie", Dolphy's "Miss Ann", and a few of those squiggle Braxton titles! LP, Vinyl record album

Dave Burrell & Motoharu YoshizawaDreams ... CD
Trio (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $22.99
If you've ever doubted the genius of pianist Dave Burrell, this may well be the record to push you over the top – as the album captures Burrell at the height of his power, at a time when he was very much in a long-form, incredibly dynamic mode of improvisation – equal maybe to the greatness of Cecil Taylor during the same time! Yet Burrell can also balance his moods and modes, too – so that one of the album's long numbers, he's completely on fire – whereas on the other he's got a much more spacious sense of improvisation – really waiting and sounding things out, with superb accompaniment from bassist Motoharu Yoshizawa on both selections. Yoshizawa has this incredible boldness on the fast, free tune "Red/Black" – then comes at his instrument in a completely different way on the moodier, more contemplative "Green/Day Dream". CD

Gary Burton with Pat MethenyDreams So Real ... LP
ECM, 1976. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Gary Burton takes on the music of Carla Bley – in a wonderfully sensitive set that opens up rich new colors in her music! The group here is a particularly well-chosen one for the effort – a quintet with Burton on vibes, Mick Goodrick on guitar, Steve Swallow on bass, and Bob Moses on drums – plus a young Pat Metheny on guitar, really shading in the tunes with his evocative tones. Burton's vibes are angular one minute, spare and spacious the next – and in a way, his treatment if Bley's tunes is some of the most sensitive we've ever heard. Titles include "Ictus/Syndrome", "Dreams So Real", "Intermission Music", "Doctor", and "Vox Humana". LP, Vinyl record album

Donald Byrd & Pepper AdamsOut Of This World ... LP
Warwick, 1961. Very Good ... $99.99
Some of the best recordings that Donald Byrd and Pepper Adams ever did together! The material here was recorded for the short-lived Warwick label in the early 60s – with a tight tight rhythm section that includes Jimmy Cobb on drums, Laymon Jackson on bass, and a very young Herbie Hancock on piano. Herbie kicks ass on his solos – and Byrd and Adams are very tight, with none of the clunkiness that sometimes mars their other work. The set includes a killer version of "Mr LuckyTheme", plus the tracks "Out Of This World", "Bird House", "It's A Beautiful Evening", and "Curro's". LP, Vinyl record album

Glen CampbellGlen Travis Campbell/I Knew Jesus/I Remember Hank Williams ... CD
Capitol/BGO (UK), 1972/1973. New Copy 2CD ... $10.99 16.99
A trio of early 70s albums from Glen Campbell – all of them a lot more obscure than his hits! Glen Travis Campbell has a cover proclaiming that the set is "a new musical path" – and producer Jimmy Bowen works with bigger backings from Larry Muhuberac to use soaring strings next to the acoustic core, in ways that push Glen into some of the more soulful expressions he had to offer. The approach is a bit hard to describe, but it's different both from country roots, and from Jimmy Webb territory – that majestic Glen Campbell sound rising up nicely – on tunes that include "One Last Time", "I Will Never Pass This Way Again", "Sweet Fantasy", "Running Scared", "Just For What I Am", and "The Last Thing On My Mind". I Knew Jesus is a record that continues the further exploration of Glen Campbell's vocal range – with some mellow fluid moments that are awash in deeper trills, mixed with more upfront tunes that do a great job of unlocking more of the country currents in Glen's talents – a great shift, and one that would come on even more strongly in his mid 70s return to fame. The set includes a great version of the Kinky Friedman song "Sold American" – one we maybe like even better than Kinky's – plus "I Take It On Home", "I Want To Be With You Always", "Give Me Back That Old Familiar Feeling", "You're The One", and "On This Road". On the final album, Glen Campbell takes on the music of Hank Williams – but in a way that often has the sort of dreamy haze that goes with the "I Remember" in the title! The songs are all Hank's, but the presentation isn't gritty honky tonk – and instead uses fuller backings with Glen's lead vocals, almost as if the whole thing were done in the mid 60s by Chet Atkins at RCA! Jimmy Bowen's at the helm, but there's backup singers and fuller strings than before – which really changes up the Campbell takes on tunes that include "Cold Cold Heart", "Half As Much", "Your Cheatin Heart", "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry", and "You Win Again". Captain BeefheartBluejeans & Moonbeams ... LP
Mercury, 1974. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A bit of a notorious record in the good Captain's career, cut in the transition between the original Magic Band and the fine later lineup that was responsible for the excellent LPs on Virgin. The sound is pretty spare, and without the mindbending twists and turns that Beefheart had made his trademark up to this point, and as such, is more of a straight blues and rock record. Van Vliet still sounds great, croaking his idiosyncratic lyrics in his own bad to the bone manner. 9 tracks in all, including "Party Of Special Things", "Same Old Blues", "Observatory Crest", "Pompadour Swamp", "Captains Holiday", "Rock N Roll's Evil Doll", "Further Than We've Gone", "Twist Ah Luck" and "Bluejeans & Moonbeams". Al Casey/Billy Butler/Jackie WilliamsGuitar Odyssey ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1974. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
A really fantastic album of jazz guitar – one that features two masters from an earlier era, both recorded in the 70s in a really stripped-down setting! The group just features the drums of Jackie Williams with the guitars of Al Casey and Billy Butler – both players who have a highly rhythmic style in their music, which they draw from strongly throughout – as one guitarist will solo while the other will provide more of a rhythmic pulse – and Butler does an especially nice job of changing up his guitar "voice" from track to track. Most tunes are standards, but the setting really transforms them – and titles include "Ghost Of A Chance", "Tea For Two", "Mack The Knife", "Who", "Al & Billy Fast Blues", "Indian Summer", "Three Little Words", and "Al & Billy Blues". Curtis Clark with Louis MoholoDreams Deferred ... CD
Nimbus, 1993. New Copy ... $9.99
2 great sessions from pianist Curtis Clark – a crucially overlooked player, and one with a style that bridges the modernist gap between Thelonious Monk and Cecil Taylor! The first 5 tracks on the set are all (coincidentally enough!) tunes by Monk – played with a trio that includes Wayne Dockery on bass and Louis Moholo on drums, in a style that really changes up the mood of the original compositions, yet still keeps all their angular charm. Titles include "Misterioso", "Monk's Mood", "Light Blue", and the great "Worry Later/San Francisco Holiday". The remaining 6 tracks on the CD feature the trio with Dockery and Moholo, expanded to a septet with players that include Tristan Honsiger on cello, Felicity Provan on trumpet, and Tobias Delius on tenor sax. These tunes are nearly all originals by Clark, and some of them are a fair bit straighter than his other work of the time – almost in a soulbop mode on the best numbers. Titles include "Sean", "Two Shadows In The Mist", "Nelson", and "Diaphane". CD

DreamsImagine My Surprise ... LP
Columbia, 1972. Near Mint- ... $13.99
A funky fusion classic – the second Columbia set from this killer group of all-star players! The style's like the first Dreams album – a bit rock-influenced at times, but filled with jazzy instrumentation by players who include Randy Brecker on trumpet, Michael Brecker on saxes, Don Grolnick on keyboards, and Billy Cobham on drums! Edward Vernon sings on most numbers, with a soulful style that's a bit of a change from usual work of this type – and the set's got a feel that's definitely in keeping with the odd Gahan Wilson cartoon on the front cover – familiar grooves, but a bit offbeat too, and very much in its own sort of space. Titles include "Here She Comes Now", "Imagine My Surprise", "Medicated Goo", "Don't Cry My Lady", "Just Be Ourselves", "Why Can't I Find A Home", and "Calico Baby". LP, Vinyl record album

The rare second album from Gift Of Dreams – and that's saying a lot, because their debut was already pretty darn rare! This set follows strongly in the mode of that classic – tight boogie soul with a great 80s vibe – lots of basslines, plenty of keyboards, and beats that crackle with a sweet electro vibe – one that really fits all the wikki-wikki lines from the keys, and the general upbeat, partyful style of the music! Bettye Jo Miller sings lead vocals – despite the Mandroid title – and tracks include "Moonwalk", "Sunrise", "Sneeky", "Fantasy", "Video Sensation", and "Mandroid". LP, Vinyl record album

Wenha/Octave (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $22.99
Pretty great stuff – even though Wendall Harrison has strayed far from the Tribe Records sound of his earlier years! The record takes the spiritual post-Coltrane jazz of Harrison's earlier days, and infuses it with a smooth fusion approach that's clearly an attempt to reach a wider audience with a soulful message – giving the whole thing a blend of soul and spiritual jazz that comes off surprisingly well overall! There's some nice dark edges to the record that really keep things interesting – maybe imagine Larry Mizell producing some of the more off-beat albums on Strata East – and there's a bit of vocals on the set, which also features work from Phil Ranelin on trombone. Tracks include "Where Am I", "Sea Minor Blues", "Take Time Out", and "Dreams Of A Love Supreme". CD features bonus tracks – "No Turnin Back", "Rocket Love", and the unreleased "Patrina's Dance". CD

Gordon JenkinsSeven Dreams ... LP
Decca, 1953. Very Good- ... $1.99
A bizarre postwar effort from composer Gordon Jenkins – and one of the first full concept albums ever recorded! The record tells the tale of "seven dreams" experienced by narrator Bill Lee – set to lush orchestrations by Jenkins, and delivered with lots of lively vocalizations by members of the entire musical cast. Despite the very trippy cover, the dreams themselves aren't as surreal as you might expect – although the overall presentation of the material in recorded music format definitely is revolutionary for the time – kind of a mini-movie in sound, balanced oddly between it's own high concept and some more familiar vocal modes used to deliver the tunes. Dreams include "The Professor", "The Conductor", "The Nightmare", "The Girl On The Rock", "The Cocktail Party", and "The Pink Houseboat". LP, Vinyl record album

Black Saint (Italy), 1977. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
We always love Muhal Richard Abrams in a duet setting – and this album's no exception, as it features the pianist playing in very spare formation with violinist Leroy Jenkins – improvising freely in a concert performance from 1977! Abrams tone is often very dark and earthy, which seems to bring out similar qualities in Jenkins' instrument – almost a tautness, or tenseness, that's slightly unusual – ready for action in response to Muhal's music – sometimes a bit cowed by it, but rising strongly to state its own identity too. Thad Jones/Pepper Adams QuintetMean What You Say ... LP
Milestone, 1966. Very Good ... $19.99
A really unique little small group effort from the team of Thad Jones and Pepper Adams – one that predates Jones' bigger band work with Mel Lewis (also part of the group here), and offers one of the few chances to hear him in a small group in the late 60s! The record's got a care and charm that reminds us both of Adams' excellent late 50s sides as a leader, and of some of Thad's few records for Blue Note – an approach to jazz that's soulful, but always slightly thoughtful – yet never too pensive to swing, nor too overly complex. Jones and Adams both get in plenty of long solos, and the record also features some wonderful piano by Duke Pearson, as well as bass by Ron Carter and drums from Mel Lewis. A really special little record, and one we totally love – with titles that include "Mean What You Say", "H & T Blues", "Bossa Nova Ova", "No Refill", and "Chant". LP, Vinyl record album

The styles here are a bit more wider-ranging than the usual 70s soundtrack of this type – a bit of ballad soul, mellow numbers, and more – arranged by Dominic Frontiere and Michael Masser in styles that are a bit like some of Knight's own albums of the time. Sweet, funky, and outtasite – one of Ramsey Lewis' greatest albums of the 60s – cut under the supervision of Chicago soul maestro Charles Stepney! Highlights include a bit of kalimba from drummer Maurice White, some great guitar from Phil Upchurch, and plenty of tasty electric keys from Ramsey himself – really laying back in a righteous kind of groove – hitting new heights on tunes that include "Bold and Black", "If You've Got it, Flaunt It", "Do What You Wanna", "Cecile", "Wanderin Rose", and "Opus #5".
