✨✧ Peggy LeeOle Ala Lee – Great Favorites Styled In Spectacular Latin Fashion ... LP
Capitol, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
One of Peggy Lee's excellent Latin-tinged sides for Capitol Records – and an album that gives her already-great style of jazz vocals a nice added bounce in the backings! Arrangements are by Joe Harnell – not the most authentic of Latin talents, but an artist who's well-suited to fitting Peggy's pop jazz style of the 60s with some playfully rhythmic arrangements. Titles include "Come Dance With Me", "By Myself", "Fantastic", "Together Wherever We Go", "I Can't Resist You", and "Ole". LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sweet and slightly Latinized album from Peggy – one that features backings based around a variety of acoustic and electric guitars, with arrangements by Dave Grusin, Dick Hazard, Bob Bain, and Billy May. The album's got more varied moods than you'd expect for such a project – and overall, there's some really wonderful songs that show Peggy at her maturing best! Titles include "Goodbye My Love", "Think Beautiful", "An Empty Glass", "Good Times", "Touch The Earth", and "Beautiful Beautiful World". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ WunmiALA ... CD
Documented (UK), 2007. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The long-awaited debut of Wunmi – a vocalist who's worked with Bugz In The Attic, Louie Vega, and many others over the years – but who finally steps out here in her own full album! The record's been well worth the wait, as Wunmi's got an incredible sound here – a very unique style that we never would have guessed back when she was just dropping lyrics onto other folks' tunes – and a fresh blend of African roots, contemporary club, and influences from American soul. Most numbers have a relatively chunky groove – not really the broken beat of the London scene who've supported Wunmi, but an earthier set of rhythms that carry echoes of 70s Fela, but have a much more contemporary, complex feel overall. Lyrics have a positive, progressive feel throughout – and titles include "Greedy Body", "Illegal Alien", "ALA", "Talk Talk Talk", "Sweet Lullaby", "Message In A Bottle", "Woman Child", "Good Foot Charlie", and "Left 2 Right". Watts ProphetsThings Gonna Get Greater – The Watts Prophets 1969-1971 (Rappin Black In A White World/Black Voices On The Streets In Watts) ... CD
ALA/Water, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $7.99 17.98
A rare bit of hardcore poetry by the Watts Prophets – the legendary LA group who were kind of a west coast answer to the Last Poets! The group have a sound that's as striking as the best early work by The Last Poets – a hard-hitting blend of poetry, rhythms, and righteous energy – all recorded in a style that's stripped down, proud, angry, and in stark contrast to the rest of the work coming out in the soul music industry at the time. Their work was not only some of the most radical and striking of the early 70s, but it's also gone onto become a key blueprint for hip hop of later years – especially the rough-edged style of the west coast that began to emerge at the end of the 80s. CD brings together all the tracks from the group's 2 albums – a total of 41 short tunes that pack the punch of a hand grenade! Titles include "Pain", "A Pimp", "Take It", "Amerikkka", "The Prostitute", "F*cked", "Black In A White World", "Funny How Things Can Change", "Pimping Leaning & Feaning", "Keep You Doing Things", "The Meek Ain't Gonna", "Saint America", "They Shot Him", and "Response To A Bourgeois Nigger". CD
(Note: As a bonus, the CD includes 2 tracks that were left off of previous CD reissues – making their CD debut here!)

California PlayboysTrying To Become A Millionaire ... CD
Loadstone/Manufactured, 1976. New Copy ... $11.99
Stunning funky soul by California Playboys – a heck of a record that should have made the Playboys a huge combo at the time! It's a shame the group didn't become millionaires – but the obscurity of the record is maybe also one of its charms – the kind of small label set that never fully got its due at the time, but which is ripe for rediscovery all these many years later! The California Playboys were together for a number of years – forming as a backing band for singer Lester Young (not the sax player), doing session work for others, and otherwise developing their skills for years – all of which really comes through here in their sharp-edged instrumentation, which sounds even sharper in the 70s indie-level production for the album. The killer title tune sounds like it could (and should!) be the namesake tune of a funky mid 70s soundtrack – as it's really got a perfect cinematic soul vibe, ala Bobby Womack and Marvin Gaye – though in a tighter, smaller combo setting. Most tunes start with vocals and end with long instrumental riffing – and titles include"Double Love", "She's A Real Sweet Woman", "Just Say A Four Letter Word", "I've Got To Find Myself Another Girl", and "Turned On For Good". Extra Smooth/P-Vine (Japan), 2020. New Copy ... $26.99
A great little group – and one with a wonderful talent for bringing together soulful styles in a really catchy way – using bits of funk, ala the Brand New Heavies – but also not afraid to go for a tighter hook, too – in a way that reminds of some of our favorite Japanese-only recordings by Swing Out Sister or Workshy! As with both of those groups, there's a great female singer in the lead – the lovely Maria Enrica Lotesoriere, who also wrote all the lyrics – and arrangements are handled by keyboardist Pippo Lombardo, whose sweet keys really hold together the whole thing nicely. Titles include "Colorado Sky", "Another Smile", "One More Chance", "In The City", "What I Deserve", and "Existence". CD

Something Weird/Modern Harmonic, 1960. New Copy ... $18.99 24.99
A great little soundtrack from trash maestro Nicholas Carras – not one of the bigger names in mainstream cinema scoring at the start of the 60s – but in a way that really lets him take off and get creative with a record like this! The album's got a leadoff rock tune, some jazzier charts – ala Elmer Bernstein – and a mix of dramatic orchestrations with moodier, mellower passages – almost currents of exotica at times, all put together to create more than enough drama away from the images on the screen! Titles include "Teen Bleus", "Vegas Express", "Jazz Chase", "Fight", "7D", "Lover's Reunion", "High Spot", "Bluesy Mysterio", and "Gang Stalks Rick". LP, Vinyl record album

A much-loved album by The Charlatans – or Charlatans UK, if you live in the US like us – a set that's filled with the sorts of well-crafted, catchy tunes they do so well – kicked up with occasional beats, ala the UK scene at the time! These guys handled the blend better than most, and the album ages better than most of the time – kind of a post-4AD, post-Factory vibe finding its way into the mainstream – on titles that include "Weirdo", "Can't Even Be Bothered", "Tremelo Song", "Page One", "Ignition", "I Don't Want To See The Lights", "Not Even The Rain", and "Subtitle". Expanded package features a bonus live show, recorded in Chicago in 1991 – with titles that include "Imperial 109", "Opportunity", "10th & 11th", "White Shirt", "Indian Rope", "Flower", and "Happen To Die". Atco/Wounded Bird, 1973. New Copy ... $6.99 11.99
A great little group, and one that we only know from this one early 70s album on Atlantic – an unusual set that's kind of a mix of rootsy modes with more baroque elements – often with strongly harmonized vocals, ala America – but a very different sound overall! The production is great – full and rich, but never commercial or slick – just the right balance of vocals, guitars, and all the subtle elements that shift in and out of the mix – all with a quality that makes us wonder why these guys never went on to much bigger fame, and a longer string of records. Titles include "Just A Thought", "Cross Country", "A Ball Song", "Tastes So Good To Me", "Extended Wings", "Things With Wings", and "Today". CD

The breakout album for The Cryan Shames – a wonderfully groovy harmony pop combo from the 60s – one with a sound that's very much the best Sunshine Pop of LA, even though these guys hail from our hometown of Chicago! The vocals come together with a really magical feel – sometimes mellow and drifty, ala The Association – sometimes vibrant and soaring, in a really catchy way! The whole album's great – with just a touch of Brit invasion guitar jangle behind the vocals at times – and titles include "Heat Wave", "We'll Meet Again", "If I Needed Someone", "Hey Joe", "Sugar & Spice", "July", "I Wanna Meet You", and "Ben Franklin's Almanac". Ray Davies & The Button Down BrassThemes From The Exorcist, The French Connection, The Sting, & Other Great Films/Flashpoint ... CD
Pye/Vocalion (UK), 1974/1975. New Copy ... $19.99
Two great albums from Ray "funky trumpet" Davies – not the lead singer of The Kinks, but a heck of a groovy British bandleader from the 70s! First up is an album of Themes From The Exorcist and other films – all familiar movie themes from the early 70s, penned by artists like Michel Legrand and Lalo Schifrin – but served up here by Ray's Button Down Brass in a very cool style – compressed funk, ala the best crime/cop modes of the time – but with lots of individual touches that make the songs very different than the original versions! Titles include "Point Blank", "Enter The Dragon", "Klute", "French Connection", "Tubular Bells", "Cops & Robbers", and "Beyond Tomorrow". Flashpoint continues with some great film themes again served up in the magic Ray Davies mode – a funky big band approach that makes the record every bit as compelling as the American Cop Shows album from Henry Mancini – but maybe groovier, too. Titles include "Kojak", "Big Boss", "Man With The Golden Gun", "Mr Majestyk", "Magnum Force", "Fist Of Fury", and "Airport 1975". CD

Joy's been making waves in the soul scene of her native Germany for years, but Born & Raised is our first exposure – and it's a very nice set that's with a vibe that recalls the best modern soul with hip hop underpinnings, ala Mary J Blige – but Joy also looks back to Aretha on some excellent slower tunes. Titles include "Change" featuring Lupe Fiasco, "Be Real", "Heaven Or Hell" feat Raekwon, "One In A Million", "7 Year Itch", "Caught Up", Stranger In This Land", "Start Over", "Born & Raised", "Soweto '76-'06", "Sometimes Love" and more. Ze (France), 1984. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $11.99 23.98
Quite possibly the hippest album ever recorded by Lizzy Mercier Descloux – a session done in South Africa, and featuring a variety of unusual rhythms! The sound here isn't conventional African pop, and like other gems from the Ze Records catalog, this set blends together a number of styles into its own unique groove – some of the Ze dancefloor modes from earlier records, bright guitars ala high life recordings, and even some tropical touches that seem to be borrowed a bit from reggae. The resulting sound is great, and provides a deeper foil than before for Lizzy's English and French lyrics. Titles include "Aybssinia", "Mais Ou Sont Passees Lee Gazelles", "Dolby Sisters Saliva Brothers", "Queen Of Overdub Kisses", "I'm Liquor", "Momo On My Mind", and "Sun Jive". LP, Vinyl record album

Bob DylanSlow Train Coming ... CD
Columbia, 1979. Used ... $4.99
The first album in Dylan's so-called "Christian Period", but it's not really the uber-dramatic departure from the "old" Dylan that it was treated as at the time – gospel soul backing vocals and testifying lyricism for sure, but it sounds more like gospel has come to Dylan than it sounds like Dylan has "gone gospel". Slow Train Coming has a focused approach, ala Blood On The Tracks, even if this train doesn't come close to crossing over onto those particular tracks – and the return to a leaner, more focused vibe is welcome one. It's got stellar studio players in the mix, and producer Jerry Wexler's production touches on a soul sound, but smartly hews to Dylan's vocal style and lyrical focus. Dylan's high bar for a masterpiece given his trailblazing past didn't give this record or the following couple much a chance to succeed on their own merits back in the day, but all these years later...wow, this is really good, passionate stuff. Includes "Gotta Serve Somebody", "Precious Angel", "I Believe In You", "Slow Trait", "Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking", "Do Right To Me Baby (Do Unto Others)", "When You Gonna Wake Up", "Man Gave Name To All The Animals", "When He Returns". Proof that the US Army had plenty going on during the 70s – as you'll hear from this killer set of military-produced grooves from East Of Underground! The set goes way past the previous East Of Underground reissue – to feature work by the groups Soap, Black Seeds, and Sound Trek – all wrapped up in a beautiful package that's as visually pleasing as the music is funky! The cuts here were all recorded by US Army servicemen during the height of the Vietnam war – as Army-issued albums designed to encourage recruitment (as if a few funky grooves could help offset the bad press the war was getting on TV!) But despite that odd origin, the music here is all pretty great – mostly covers of familiar tunes from the time, but recorded with a nicely gritty quality that's mighty nice – and which makes the overall feel of the records like digging into some lost small studio tapes – ala Numero! Now Again have done a great job of putting together the whole package, too – contributing a wealth of notes and photos, and really digging deep into the scene in which these unique records were created. Not only that, but the packaging also replicates the style of the original odd releases too! The set features a CD each of music by East Of Underground and Soap – plus another CD that brings together an unusual double LP by the groups Black Seeds and Sound Trek. Greg Foat GroupGreg Foat Group – Live At The Playboy Club, London (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Jazzman (UK), 2014. Used ... $9.99
The coolest record so far from this totally great combo – a live recording done on the home turf of the Greg Foat Group – the Playboy Club in London! The retro venue really fits the slinky, sexy vibe of the group's music – and although we already loved these guys before, this album has a really special sort of feel – with loads of wonderful keyboard lines from Greg on Hohner Electra piano, Elka Rhapsody, Hammond L 100, and Mutron Phaser – almost always distorted with a nice degree of fuzz, but still a straight ahead approach, and some great undercurrents of fuzz too! The group also features tenor and trumpet – which sometimes sound distorted, ala Varitone modes – and the overall sound feels like some lost jazzy club combo from the late 60s, really tripping out in a very comfortable space. We'd easily stack this one next to our favorite funky Fender Rhodes records from back in the day – and titles include "By The Grace Of God I Am", "Ingen Reklam", "Funky Fanfare", "Madrid", and "Mr Minor". Most of the tracks are funk cuts created by mixing – ala the early years of the Melting Pot label – but there's also maybe more of a vintage vibe going on, and something of a Wu-Tang-inspired love of offbeat sounds and musical elements. Tim's in fine, effortlessly soulful voice here on material that could have found him going over the top, ala Joe Cocker, but he's tastefully restrained throughout. An underrated gem! We really love the way that Kirk Knuffke shapes the sounds that come from his horn – blowing cornet with this earthy, mouthy style that's extremely personal – and which takes on an even more unique quality in the setting of this album! The record's got Kirk in an unusual trio – Kenny Wollesen on drums and percussion, and Bob Stewart on tuba – using the instrument often in a bass-like way, ala the years of jazz before the string bass became the dominant instrument for its role – but also making a space to match the rhythm of the drums and the phrasing of Knuffke's horn! There's an obvious connection to brass band modes, but that's hardly part of the sound at all – as the record is more in the creative legacy that Stewart's been giving us on his instrument for many years – particularly those key contributions in the 80s, when he really exploded the potentials of his instrument. Ah, so French! Quite different than most of Michel Legrand's usual work – this one is much more of a tongue in cheek effort, featuring tunes that have a jaunty French-like sound – sort of served up for the American audience – with narration by Charles Boyer, in a Maurice Chevalier-type style. Percussive underscores, but for the now generation – specifically the one that wants a bit more electronics in their percussion – as most of the set seems to focus more on electric drum styles than the acoustic instruments on the cover! That's hardly a problem, though – as the set's a great one from the time when sound library styles were getting a lot more lean – and the instrumentals here would fit nicely amidst an early 80s dancefloor, especially one that was borrowing some of the funky currents from global regions, and moving them into a more mainstream clubby vibe – ala 99 Records or Ze. Baobab/Soul Jazz (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A gem of a record from flute player Lloyd McNeil – an artist who flourished strongly during the spiritual jazz scene of the 70s, but who also seemed to always have his own sort of groove as well! Lloyd blows with the complexity and far-reaching sounds of contemporaries in the loft jazz scene, but he also opens up with more of a modal groove on most of these tracks too – a great pulse from a hip rhythm section that features Dom Salvador on piano, Cecil McBee on drums, Brian Brake on drums – and both Portinho and Ray Armando on percussion – players who add sensitive, subtle elements to the music to really resonate with the flute! Lloyd's sound is wonderful throughout – sometimes with the soulful focus of Roland Kirk, sometimes more open and cosmic, ala Prince Lasha – all depending on the special rhythms of the tunes. Titles include "Griot", "Salvation Army", "You Don't Know What Love Is", and "As A Matter Of Fact". CD

MiquelaI A De Sars ... LP
Ventadorn/Finders Keepers (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
An album from the mid 70s, but one that's got an almost timeless sort of vibe – given that it was recorded in the ancient language of Occitan, and set to instrumentation with lots of lightly folksy touches, and a fair bit of jazz-styled phrasing too! The mix almost gives the set the feel of some of the best Saravah Records material of the decade – and the instrumentation, arrangements, and even presentation of language follow that sort of spirit too – as Miguela has a very poetic approach to her music, and the language, while not totally familiar, does echo a fair bit of the French of her homeland – but sometimes with a spooky blend of past and present, ala Wicker Man. Titles include "De Bon Matin", "Les Colonies", "Palunaia", "La Targa", "Lo Barranguet", "I A De Sers", and "Tu E Ieu". Also features two bonus tracks from a 45 – "Retorn" and "Magali". Johnny NashVery Best Of Johnny Nash 1956 to 1962 ... CD
Jasmine (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $13.99
A big overview of the early work of Johnny Nash – a singer that most folks know for a huge crossover radio hit in the early 70s, but who got his start much earlier, through years of recording for ABC Records! The label really saw the young Nash as a singer to challenge Nat King Cole or Johnny Mathis – and he definitely does a great job in the territory of both here, but also really finds his own space too – eventually ending up more as a precursor to the sorts of 60s male singers who were adept at more heartbreaking material, ala Jerry Butler or Chuck Jackson. Arrangements are large and rich, often with a bit of vocals behind the lead of Nash – on 31 tracks that include "Moment Of Weakness", "Love's Young Dream", "Too Much Love", "World Of Tears", "Kisses", "The End Of The World", "Almost In Your Arms", "Roots Of Heaven", "The Wish", "Too Proud", and "Take A Giant Step" – plus the unusual "Teen Commandments", done with Paul Anka and George Hamilton IV! Very groovy work from Chico – still very Latin at the core, but with lots of light 60s touches on top, ala the work of Gary McFarland, or some of the other groove-conscious arrangers for Verve and Impulse! Players on the set include Art Farmer, Clark Terry, JJ Johnson, Seldon Powell, and Pat Rebillot – and there's a nice choppy approach to the tracks that keeps the whole thing fresh! Titles include "Live Oak", "Patcham", "Panache", "Green Moss", and "The Lady From Nine Flags". Very groovy cover, too – with images of ladies from around the world, illustrating the Nine Flags concept! LP, Vinyl record album

Piero PiccioniIl Boom ... LP
CAM (Italy), 1963. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Beautiful soundtrack work from Piero Piccioni – an early score, but filled with the kind of weird, offbeat sounds that have always made him a genius! There's a bit of a link here – between earlier Italian scoring, ala Nino Rota, and some of the later, modder sounds of Piccioni's late 60s generation – a really cool blend that comes through in the way the horns play with the rhythms, and the organ has a strange, almost outer-space sort of quality! One number has a cool batucada feel, and the whole thing's got a brilliant Italian cinematic quality – a true under-discovered gem from the great Piccioni. Royal JestersEnglish Oldies ... CD
Numero, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $7.99 18.98
Really wonderful work from the Texas scene of the 60s – not the heady psych or garage usually associated with the state, nor the more Latin-inflected modes from the border – but instead a unique batch of music that feels more like work from either coast, and which comes across with a surprisingly soulful sound! The 60s scene in East LA is well-known as a hotbed of early Chicano soul – and plenty of Spanish Harlem groups also dug doo wop at the time too – and the Royal Jesters fit perfectly right into that spot – working like a garage band, but with a stunning approach to vocal harmonies that really rivals the underground soul acts of the time. Most of the best cuts are relatively mellow and laidback – ala Joe Bataan's sweet soul work – and a few other nice numbers bring in a romping party vibe to balance things out, with some of the festive qualities you'd expect from the crowd scene on the cover. Yet it's the soul tunes we love the most, and the album's filled with them – a heady collection of 28 tracks that includes "I've Got Soul", "I'm So Sorry", "Afro-lypso", "My Life", "Spanish Grease", "Back To You", "Just A Friend", "Theme For A Lonely Girl", and "Meet Me Down In Soulsville". The record's got a quality that's quite unique – a bit Iceman soul, ala Jerry Butler or Chuck Jackson – a bit of the polish of crossover acts like Ray Charles or Gene McDaniels – yet always done at a level that has Scott's deep, rich voice right upfront in the mix – full of power but never overdone! The tunes are from a variety of sources, but really get remade by Freddie – and titles include his hit versions of "Hey Girl" and "I Got A Woman", plus "What Do I See In The Girl", "Where Is The Girl", and "Where Does Love Go". A late 80s electro gem from Ben Tankard – a real multi-instrumentalist here, making best use of the digital technology of the time to serve up a smooth blend of jazzy fusion, funk, and soul! Ben plays most of the instruments here – midi keyboards, wind controllers, guitar synth, drum programs, and more – but uses them all with the warmth of a fusion record from a decade before, which is quite a feat – as much of the instrumentation could be a bit cold in the wrong hands. A few numbers have strong keyboard solos out front – ala Rodney Franklin or Bobby Lyle at the time – and titles include "All Keyed Up", "Melodic Heaven", and "Eden Celebration" – plus "All Keyed Up (Time Capsule seaside mix)". Strut (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $19.99 29.99
A really riveting collection of music from a scene that we've hardly heard much from before – upbeat grooves from the island nation of Madagascar, all recorded at the end of the 70s and start of the 80s – but with a vibe that sounds much older overall! The one thing that really stands out in a number of these tracks is the strong use of organ and keyboards – often in this full, swirling sort of style – infusing the grooves next to the more familiar percussion and guitar lines you might hear in other African music from the generation – although even those elements are used in ways that are pretty darn unique! The tracks often have this raw intensity that comes from both the instrumentation and the way things are put together – and the whole package is a really refreshing change from other oft-tread musical territory on the continent. A heady dip into the world of the Hammond B3 organ – that instrument made famous by jazz recordings by Jimmy Smith and Jimmy McGriff, heard here in a much wider variety of settings! Sure, there's plenty of jazz cuts on the set, but there's also some great soul combos too – both of the vocal mode and the soul instrumental side – ala Booker T & The MGs, but presented here in a range of raw cuts from the farther reaches of the funky 45 underground! We love organ jazz, and the Hammond organ is one of the things that first got us digging for records back in the day – but even then, we never came up with cuts this cool – a fantastic track list that includes "Count Down" by Timmy Sims, "Take The Last Train Home" by The Blue Knights, "Spooky" by Steve Fisher & Mark Hittner, "The Hawk" by George & The Hi-Liters, "Teach Me How To Bump" by Bill Cole, "Tall Temble" by Ross Carnegie Orchestra, "The Bird" by Bob Bassett, "The Other Side" by The New Imperials, and "Philly Dog" by Charles Ables Trio. ✨✧ Art BlakeyArt Blakey & The Jazz Messengers (Impulse) ... CD
Impulse, 1961. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Killer stuff by Art Blakey – one of his few non-Blue Note sessions from the time, and a hard-wailing set that features the Jazz Messengers as a sextet! The format is one that flourished briefly in these early 60s years – and in this case, the already great lineup of Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor, and Bobby Timmons on piano is joined by Curtis Fuller on trombone – a frontline that makes for some really amazing music, and which starts to bring in a lyrical energy to the group that's really amazing! The force of Fuller on the ensemble cannot be denied – and the group shift from straight hardbop with a soulful bent into an even more inspired mode – as you'll hear on the album's classic reading of Fuller's "Ala Mode" – nestled in alongside Jazz Messenger takes on standards like "Invitation", "I Hear A Rhapsody", and "You Don't Know What Love Is". Impulse, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Quite possibly our favorite record ever from reedman Marion Brown – and very different than both his seminal 60s recordings, and his European sides from later years! There's a really earthy feel to this record – one that really lives up to the title, and which comes from the use of lots of percussion, played by just about every group member, ala AACM – but handled in a style that's warmly spiritual, and very organic too – right in line with the best Impulse Records vibe of the time, yet completely its own thing too! Brown plays alto and soprano sax, and is working with players who include Leo Smith on trumpet, William Malone on mbira and autoharp, James Jefferson on bass, and Steve McCall, Jumma Santos, Bill Hasson, and A Kobena Adzenyah on percussion – in addition to percussion plays by other group members too. Two tracks are spare, beautiful solos – almost a Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre vibe – and titles include "Buttermilk Bottom", "Once Upon A Time", "Tokalokaloka", and "Karintha". LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 1959. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Easily the crowning moment of genius for the legendary Dave Brubeck Quartet – the moment when all things came together magically, and the group somehow elevated themselves to a whole new level in jazz! At the time of the set, Brubeck, Paul Desmond, and the rest had already been making plenty of waves with their creative yet swinging approaches to modern jazz – heard on a number of successful albums for Fantasy and Columbia in the 50s. But with this record, they really knocked one out of the park – blending Desmond's cool alto, Brubeck's unusual piano phrasing, Joe Morello's melodic drum work, and Eugene Wright's pulsating bass into a waltzing, almost modal groove that crossed over to many camps at the time! The classics "Take Five" and "Blue Rondo Ala Turk" were both hits on their own – but all titles are great, and include "Kathy's Waltz", "Strange Medow Lark", "Everybody's Jumpin", and "Pick Up Sticks". Philadelphia International, 1973. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pivotal album from The O'Jays – and an undeniable Philly classic! The record was the third the group cut for the Philadelphia International label – but it was really the first one that pushed their strong righteous soul agenda, sort of a mix of message-oriented lyrics and heavy soul (ala The Temptations), fused with the warmer more sophisticated styles of the Philly sound! The blend is perfect – and has a way of getting the message from the underground right into the living room – and a bit onto the charts as well! From the image on the cover – which features the group in a slave ship setting – to politics of tracks like "Don't Call Me Brother", "For The Love Of Money", "Put Your Hands Together", and "This Air That I Breathe", the record's an extremely unified effort – kind of to the O'Jays what What's Going On was to Marvin Gaye. A fantastic jazz group from the contemporary South African scene – one who've got a very righteous vibe, and a sound that's maybe even more far-reaching than any jazz we've heard from that scene back in the 60s or 70s! The group's led by Shabaka Hutchings on tenor, but is a very collaborative ensemble – with these tremendous upfront vocals from Siyabonga Mthembu, a singer with a very unique approach, and a spiritual current that we'd rank right up there with work by Leon Thomas, Dwight Trible, or Joe Lee Wilson, even though Mthembu's very much his own man. The group's also got two other great horn players – Mthunzi Mvubu on alto and Mandla Mlangeni on trumpet – plus Fender Rhodes and piano from Nduduzo Makhathini, and a wonderfully early array of bass, percussion, and drums – which lay down a fantastic groundwork for each tune. The music starts somewhere in the spiritual territory of the post-Coltrane scene – but really takes off immediately with its own individual spirit – ala Kamasai Washington – and the performance is live and unadorned, without some of the studio efforts that show up on other Brownswood label releases. Beautiful work throughout – an instant classic that we'd rank right up there with the best material by folks like Nat Birchall or Matthew Hallsall, but very different too. Amazing! Although this album's a soundtrack to some goofy California surfer film, it's actually a killer batch of off-kilter jazz tracks composed by Bud Shank, and with a sound that's unlike anything we've ever heard from him! The frontline of the session is Shank, Bob Cooper, and Carmell Jones – but forget any conceptions you may have about West Coast Cool for a set like this, because Jones' off-kilter hardbop approach is in full-tilt, and the set grooves with an amazing modernist edge. Part of this may be due to the presence of Gary Peacock and Dennis Budimer in the album's sextet grouping – but we actually think the real genius lies with Shank, who scored the whole fershlugger thing, and who plays with a sinister tone that just cuts us to the quick. One of our favorite west coast albums of all time – honest! Titles include "Jungle Cruise", "Ala Moana", and "How Hight The Makaha". LP, Vinyl record album

Three-dimensional magic from the great Jimmy Castor – an artist who'd already conquered the worlds of sweet soul, heavy funk, and Latin by the time of this release! There's a vibe to the record that almost reminds us of some of the creative productions that Harvey Fuqua was doing for RCA at the same time – with New Birth and The Nite-Liters – and Jimmy's maestro seems to be Gerald Thomas, who knows how to spin just the right mood for each different track. An amazing lost trove of work by electronic music Raymond Scott – sounds that were never issued commercially, and which may well represent the last corner of his genius yet to be explored! The music here was all created in Scott's home studio on Long Island – and is a fantastic blend of playful modes and more exploratory sounds – very much in the spirit of Bruce Haack or Perry & Kingsley at the time, and maybe a bit like the electronic work of Piero Umiliani – but with a weirder, wilder vibe overall! There's definitely a few noisy moments – ala Soothing Sounds For Baby – but many of the tracks are short experiments, and also include some jingles or commercial music too – which makes for a fantastically large array of analogue elements throughout. The package also features detailed notes, and a look at this obscure chapter of Scott's career – a time when he was maybe at his most experimental, with amazing results. Titles include "Ohio Bell Mystery", "Idea 35", "Nice Sound 3", "Cindy Alternate", "The Toy Trumpet (demo 1)", "Rhythm Sample", "Tone Stepper", "Super Cheer", "Baltimore Gas & Electric Test", "Nice Set Up 7", "Cyclic Bit 3", "Sparrows (part 1)", "Ripples (fugue)", and "Auto Lite Wheels (effects)". ✨✧ Marcos ValleBraziliance! ... CD
Warner/Mr Bongo (UK), 1967. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most important early albums by Marcos Valle – a set of instrumental tracks recorded with lots of acoustic guitar! Even though Valle was well known as a singer and composer of bossa nova tunes, the set instead focuses on his instrumental work – recording his guitar ala Jobim or Bonfa at the time – with some larger arrangements from Deodato, who really brings a great feel to the set! The sound is tremendous – as sweeping strings soar over tight rhythms from drummer Wilson Das Neves – and Valle and Deodato set some magical moods on tunes that include "Deus Brasileiro", "Vamos Pranchar", "Tanto Andei", "Seu Encanto", "Batucada Surgiu", "Dorme Profundo", and "Os Grilos" – the first ever recording of "Crickets Sing For Anamaria"! ✨✧ Eugene ChadbourneLost Eddie Chatterbox Sessions ... CD
No Prestige/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Magnificent early work from Eugene Chadbourne – a set that was recorded on Christmas Day, 1977 – and only issued a decade later on cassette – but sounds that are every bit as mindblowing as the material on Chadbourne's first few albums! The music here is heavy on compositions from Thelonious Monk – and the set also features Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, and Ornette Coleman tunes too – all reworked by Chadbourne with this incredible acoustic guitar style – very freewheeling, but still tied to the roots of jazz through a sense of melody – in ways that are maybe even more illustrative of his role in the scene than some of his other work. At one level, there's an acoustic guitar craft here that stretches back to the early blues recordings, but through a strong sense of avant freedom – ala Captain Beefheart – but Eugene's care with the tunes, mixed with his expressive phrasing, also put him in a space that's somewhere between the world of Derek Bailey and Fred Frith, and that of jazzman Barney Kessel, whose name he's holding in the poster on the cover. Titles include "5th Of Beethoven", "Reflections", "Off Minor", "San Francisco", "Hackensack", "Dewey Square", "Central Park West", "Brilliant Corners", and "Light Blue". Also includes a number of Chadbourne originals – and unissued tracks as well! CD

✨✧ Nancy DupreeGhetto Reality ... CD
Asch/Folkways, 1970. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Kind of silly – but also pretty darn hip! Nancy Dupree was one of the most righteous music teachers you could ever have – and here, she's working with some young kids from the rough side of Rochester, in an album of simple tunes that have a surprisingly soulful edge to them. Nancy plays piano, and the kids sing either solo or in ensemble format. The record's got a starkness that's extremely compelling, and it's a lot stronger than we expected, even if it's not like some of the funky stuff on the Folkways label. Includes a song called "James Brown" that has all the kids making grunts and groans ala 60s James, then singing about his shift from a process to an afro! Other titles include "I Want", "What Do I Have?", "Bag Snatchin", and "Docta King". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

✨✧ Ariel KalmaNuits Blanches Au Studio 116 ... LP
Transversales Disques (France), Late 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Beautifully minimalist work from Ariel Kalma – work that seems to move effortlessly between acoustic and electronic sources, often in ways that feel like the latter is manipulating the former! One piece here feels as if soprano sax lines were folded back on themselves – maybe in a looser style of the Steve Reich or Terry Riley phase progressions – while other moments are more abstract and atmospheric, in keeping with the GRM studios in which all the work was recorded! One long track has surprisingly beautiful acoustic piano – forging a loose, probably improvised line – ala Keith Jarrett, but more open – and although there's a bit of voice at one point, most of the record is instrumental. Titles include "Japanese Dream", "Ballad Sur Le Lac", "Paris Flight", "Voyage Au Centre De La Tete", and "Le Soleil Au Couchant". LP, Vinyl record album

Jasmine (UK), Late 40s/1950s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great range of work from Rose Murphy – one of the most unique talents of her generation, and an artist with a style that's really unlike anyone else we can think of! At one level, Murphy's a great pianist – ala Hadda Brooks – but she's also got a high range of singing, with vocals that are more in the light upper reaches hit by Blossom Dearie – which makes for quite a contrast to her work on the keys! Then there's also her very rhythmic way of singing, which often has some playful inflections – most notably the use of the "chee chee" or "chi chi" phrase, which comes through on a fair bit of the tunes here. The package is the first strong career overview we've ever seen of Murphy's music – and includes tracks recorded for the RCA, Majestic, Mercury, Verve, and Decca labels – with 28 tracks that include "By The Waters Of Minnetonka", "You Were Meant For Me", "Time On My Hands", "Ceceila", "When I Grow Too Old To Dream", "Rose Of The Rio Grande", "Mm Mm Good", "Busy Line", "A Little Bird Told Me", and "The Little Red Monkey". The Alan Bown group was unique in that they were led by a trumpet player– Bown also plays flugelhorn and maracas on the set – with blue-eyed-soulful vocals by a young Robert Palmer! Really nice stuff that bridges more 60s soul & r&b influenced sounds with a grittier rock edge. AntibalasFu Chronicles (with download) ... LP
Daptone, 2020. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
Antibalas take a page from the Wu-Tang book, and add a little kung fu action to their music – with results that maybe make this set one of their freshest in years! All the core energy of the group is very firmly in place – that razor-sharp instrumentation that's made these guys one of the best funky groups on the planet for over 20 years, and which also still makes Antibalas head and shoulders above some of the groups that sprung up in their wake – and this time around, the lyrical themes are nicely expanded, so that the vocals have as much dynamic energy as the horns and Afro Funk percussion – almost with this narrative approach that furthers the message in the music. Titles include "Lai Lai", "Fight Am Finish", "Koto", "Amenawon", and "Mttt (parts 1 & 2)". LP, Vinyl record album

Anti, 2007. Used ... $6.99
An incredible leap forward for Antibalas – a record filled with bolder sounds and deeper grooves than ever before – and one that even tops the already-great sound of their previous albums! The mix of modes here is really amazing – some of the group's familiar Afro-Funk at the core, but also a much wider range of influences too – bits of dub, choppy Latin guitar, Sun Ra-like organ lines, and gamelon-styled metal bits – all wrapped together in a groove that has some particularly hypnotic undertones! The set was produced by John McIntire, who's no doubt a big influence on the sound here – and the record really shatters any expectations you might have from the group – proof that they're way more than just another Afro Funk combo. Titles include "Beaten Metal", "Filibuster X", "Sanctuary", "Hilo", "War Hero", "ICE", and "Age". CD

Pietro Vincenti (Italy), 2018. New Copy ... $8.99
Beautiful work from Blue Mandala Project – an Italian group led by pianist Pietro Vincenti, an artist we really loved for his older Brazilian-styled sounds in the group Quintetto X! The vibe here has some of the sound of the older group, but there's also maybe more funk and soul elements at play – given that Pietro sometimes plays sweet electric keyboards, and that the album features soulful lead vocals from Mimma Pisto – a female singer who provides English vocals for most of the tracks! The core approach is still jazz, but the vocals really give the whole thing a very personal vibe – and all songs are written by Pietro, both music and lyrics – with titles that include "Cold Blue", "The Human Journey", "Lonely Girl", "The Trip", "Breve Amore", "Murcia", "Kali", "South Shout", and "Summer Afternoon". David BowieAladdin Sane (45th anniversary silver vinyl pressing) ... LP
Virgin, 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $21.99
One of our favorite David Bowie albums ever! Aladdin Sane was a real turning point for Bowie – recorded on the heels of the tremendously popular Ziggy Stardust album, but really pushing the boundaries past the more straight-ahead rock and glam of that record. Instead of just sitting on his laurels, Bowie tripped out into a wilder, weirder world with this one – mixing together elements of some of the baroque arrangements of early records, with the meaner leaner sound of the 70s – populating the songs with freaks, weirdos, and odd characters that gave the whole thing a really creepy edge. The whole thing's an oft-overlooked gem that, to us, is truly one of Bowie's most magical moments – and titles include "Drive In Saturday", "Panic In Detroit", "Aladdin Sane", "Watch That Man", "The Jean Genie", "The Prettiest Star", "Time", and "Lady Grinning Soul". A long-overdue second album from Alan Braufman – maybe not the most familiar name in jazz, but a reed player who gave the world one fantastic album on India Navigation back in the 70s – and who now finally returns as a leader for this equally great second set! Braufman plays alto and flute – and the whole thing has this bold, soaring sort of energy – maybe even more spiritually forceful than Alan's classic album, thanks in part to an excellent group who bristle with dynamic vibes throughout – always on the edge of going farther out, but also nicely together too. Other players include Cooper Moore on piano, James Brandon Lewis on tenor, Ken Filiano on bass, and Andrew Drury on drums – with a bit of percussion at times from Michael Wimberly. A rare chapter in the career of Peter Brotzmann – and a very smoking set cut on the Finnish scene of the early 70s!
