Barbara GeorgeI Know (You Don't Love Me No More) ... LP
AFO, 1962. Very Good+ ... $43.99
Although she's best remembered for the title track to this one – a solid hit if there ever was one – Barbara's also a pretty darn good interpreter of original and standard material, with a style that shows roots that stretch back deeper than some of her other 60s soul contemporaries. This hard to find record features some great backing, and production by Juggy Murray – and it includes the title hit, plus "Whip O Will", "Without Love", "Love", "Hurted", and "Honest I Do". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing – orange label with deep groove! Side 2 has an unusual lock groove before the music starts, but plays fine once you get past it. Cover has some very light wear, mostly on the edge.)

✨✧ Ricardo ValvardeXire De Vibrafone ... CD
Think (Japan), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really beautiful record – one that takes the usual sound of vibes in jazz, and moves them into slightly rootsier territory – mixing the lead instrument of Ricardo Valverde with bass, drums, and a trio of percussionists who really shape the sound! The approach is very unique, and even the guest appearance of other instruments along the way – trombone, trumpet, guitar, and flute – never seems to change the vibe too much, and instead really preserves the wonderfully inherent beauty of the whole recording! Valverde's touch on the vibes creates these gentle explosions of color that are really beautiful – almost blossoming along the pathways created by the percussion – on titles that include "Ogun", "Mensageiro", "Xango", "Oxalufan", "Seu Arariboia", "Tema Para Odoya", "Nana", and "Oxum". Adama BarryLembi ... CD
OK World (Norway), 2018. New Copy ... $9.99
Spare sounds get taken to the next dimension – as the music of Adama Barry is presented in both its original creation, and in a set of remixes by Henrik Schwarz, Bugge Wesseltoft, Prins Thomas, Mental Overdrive, and others! The album's got an unusual approach – as two-thirds of the tracks just feature Burkina Faso musician Barry – who sings, and plays a range of regional instruments, with help from Solo Diarra on djembe and balafon – all on these very spare tracks that are beautiful and haunting. Then, on six of the album's fifteen tracks, the remixers step in and electrify things – often adding beats, keyboard lines, and reworking the acoustic elements in a variety of ways. Titles include "Lembi", "Maama", "Soukalen", "Serendou", "Bissa", and "Mballa". CD

Beat Bronco Organ TrioRoad Trip (with bonus download) ... LP
Rocafort (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $22.99
The Beat Bronco Organ Trio are more than great enough at the core, but they also offer up some great surprises over the course of this fantastic full length album – including slight use of clavinet and mini-moog by Gabri Casanova, who mostly handles the Hammond in the lead – and guest work at a few spots from Chip Wickham on flute and electric piano! There's a few other players who drop in along the way – but the core groove here is from the trio, who not only replicate a 60s soul jazz vibe, but also move things through a deep funk legacy – maybe more in the mode of the Sugarman Three than a Don Patterson or Jack McDuff combo on Prestige – as there are rhythms and elements that pick up bits of 70s funk. Drums are by Antonio Pax Alvarez and guitar is by Lucas De Mulder – and titles include "Hard Play", "Crispy Time", "Easy Baby", "Hey Hey", "Squirtly", "Under Pressure", "Road Trip", and "Electro Pi". Bitter Funeral Beer Band with Don CherryLive In Frankfurt 82 ... LP
Country & Eastern/Black Sweat (Italy), 1982. New Copy ... $24.99
Don Cherry made some of his most globally-conscious music in the northern reaches of the European scene – and this set is no exception, as the legendary trumpeter works on this great live set in Frankfurt, Germany – with instrumentation that includes a very freewheeling blend of percussion, stringed instruments, and reeds! Unlike some of Cherry's 70s recordings, which incorporate instruments with African and Eastern origins, this set relies heavily on more familiar tenor, alto, trumpet, cello, bass, violin, and guitar – but all used in these very openly-flowing ways that seem to embrace the whole globe at once! The sarod of K Sridhar is the only non-Western instrument in the mix – and is only used on two of the album's tracks – while Cherry blows pocket trumpet throughout – coming together with an especially great ensemble on the extended "Funeral Dance" at the end of the performance. Other titles include "Chetu", "Darafo", and "Bitter Funeral Beer". LP, Vinyl record album

George DanquahHot & Jumpy ... LP
QuaMi, 1978. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A world of rhythmic, danceable sounds from George Danquah – the legendary Ghanaian guitarist, composer and bandleader who had earlier played and/or toured with Benya Beats, Blue Monks and Uhuru Dance Band and other brilliant groups – and this rare mid 70s set is the only album billed to Danquah that we've ever been lucky enough to hear! It's amazing stuff and covers broad stylistic terrain while holding together strongly. There's some fairly straight up, yet uniquely arranged Afro Funk & soul, some reggae inspired rhythms, percussion driven gems and strains of highlife. Danquah plays guitar and handles the conducting and arranging, backed by a core of trumpet, tenor sax, organ, bass, drums and conga – with some vocals, wah wah guitar and flute. Includes "Mbesiafo (Part One)", "African Reggae", "Just For A Moment", "Araba Soso Wo Ndzema", "Chain Of Love", "Why Worry – Let's Do 'Highlife'", "Mbesiafo (Part Two – Vocal)", "Mese Medo No" and "Onyame Sane". EmanativeEarth ... CD
Jazzman (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $8.99
Maybe the best music so far from Emanative – a group who've been kicking around the London scene for the past decade or so, but who really seem to hit a new level with this album on Jazzman! The group's led by percussionist Nick Woodmansey, who often steps back to let all the other spiritual elements flow through the sound in a wonderful way – including excellent piano and organ from the great Jessica Lauren, plus reeds from Tamar Osborn and Ben Hadwen – both players who have a very cosmic approach – and haunting percussion from additional players, in addition to Nick's own work on drums, balafon, and other instruments. There's a very strong bassist in the lineup, too – Suman Joshi – and he directs the proceedings with great strength when everyone comes together – but also knows enough to step back when things are exploring different planes of global consciousness at a more personal level. Titles include "Spice Route Suite", "Egosystem", "New Day", "Heaven's Mirror", "Iyaami", "Raga Requiem", and "Minutes To Midnight For This Planet". CD

Fire Orchestra (Mats Gustafsson)Actions ... LP
Rune Grammafon (Germany), 2020. New Copy ... $26.99
An expanded take on the original "Actions" composition – originally recorded by Don Cherry, with composer Krzystof Penderecki – and extended here by original material from reedman Mats Gustafsson! The original recording was a key juncture between two different avant worlds on the European scene – and this updated set is equally powerful – as it features an all-star group of younger improvisers – with Gustafsson on baritone and leading the group – in a lineup that includes Per Texas Johansson on tenor and flute, Christer Bothen on bass clarinet, Anna Hogberg on alto, Marial Berthel on trombone, Reine Fiske on guitar, Alex Zethson on Hammond organ, Torbjorn Zetterberg on electric bass, and Goran Kajfes, Niklas Barno, and Susansa Santos Silva on trumpets! The strong use of trumpets really echoes Cherry's legacy, but there's also a very different vibe to this take on Penderecki's mix of composition and improvisation – one that's maybe more careful, spacious, and thoughtful than the original - a great tribute not just to Gustafsson's legacy, but also the evolution of improvisation over the decades. Fire Orchestra (Mats Gustafsson)Arrival ... CD
Rune Grammafon (Germany), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99
A different sound than usual from the Fire Orchestra of Mats Gustafsson, Johan Berthling, and Andreas Werliin – a set that still features the large spontaneous composition style of the group, but which also has them working with singer Mariam Wallentin – whose vocals really add a lot to the whole process! Wallentin's a singer with a very powerful presence – and a style that's more innately tuneful than usual for the Fire ensemble – which makes for a very unusual, very creative mix with instrumentation that includes Mats Gustafsson on baritone sax, Per Texas Johansson on bass clarinet and oboe, Isak Hedtjarn on b sharp clarinet and alto, Susana Santos Silva on trumpet, Johan Berthling on bass, and Andreas Werliin on drums. The set also features keyboards from Tomas Hallonsten, which changes things up a bit too – as does the slight use of violin and viola – all of which makes for a record that has the group going way beyond jazz, and opening up a new audience for their sound. Titles include "At Last I Am Free", "I Am A Horizon", "Weekends The Soil Is Calling", "Blue Crystal Fire", "Silver Trees", and "Dressed In Smoke Blown Away". CD

Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1979. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
We love Sonny Fortune – because he always plays so great! Sonny started as more of an acoustic soul jazz player – but by the time of this session, he's working with a lot of electric backing, in a fusiony mode that should dampen his enthusiasm, but which only seems to spur him onto new heights! The group's got some killer keyboards from Larry Willis, tight guitar from Ray Gomez, and lots of Latin percussion touches that really make the grooves dance – but the real highlight is Sonny, whose tone and placement are impeccable, almost in the vein of Gary Bartz during his years with Larry Mizell, but perhaps a bit more soaring and searching. Titles include "Afortunado", "Georgiana", "Igbob's Shuffle", "Francisco" and "Come In Out Of The Rain". CD

Frank & His SistersFrank & His Sisters ... LP
Mississippi, Mid 50s. New Copy ... $15.99
Beautiful sounds from Tanzanian guitarist Frank Humplick – who plays here alongside vocal harmonies from his two sisters – in a mode that's almost like a East African cross between The Carter Family and Andy & The Bey Sisters! The vibe is different, of course – as the raw guitar lines dominate the sound more strongly, and are offset by the warmer harmonies of the sisters – while Frank sometimes delivers a lead vocal with a style that's a bit more rough around the edges, but no less charming! The package is a great overview of these vintage sounds, in the best Mississippi style – and titles include "Shida", "Tuwe Sawa", "Beba Jive", "Nakusalimu", "Kafo Mshiki", "Mwanangu Lala", and "Sharu Shechisia". Biscoito Fino (Brazil), 2018. New Copy ... $24.99
A really great record from Gilberto Gil – a Brazilian legend who maybe strayed from his genius a bit in later years, but who's really been back on track of late! Gilberto's wonderful here – very up-close and personal, but also sharply witty too – returning to that energy that made his 70s material so important, with both a sense of the man and his larger ideas coming through in a really great way! There's some acoustic elements in the music at times, a few jazzy touches, and none of those sometimes-obtuse modes that Gilberto might have used 20 years back – just a clean, clear focus on the ever-flowing talents that make a record like this every bit as great as late life material from Caetano Veloso. Titles include "Uma Coisa Bonitinha", "Sereno", "Na Real", "Ok Ok Ok", "Yamandu", "Tartarugue", and "Sol De Maria". CD features bonus tracks "Pela Internet 2", "Kalil", and "Afogamento". CD

Salsoul/Octave (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... $22.99
Maybe the third great Philly studio group of the 70s – after MFSB and Salsoul Orchestra – a killer combo who provided backing grooves to plenty of great club tracks over the years – and who step out strongly here on their own debut album! Bunny Sigler helps give the album a sharp focus – with his own production and songwriting in play – in modes that are very much like his own best club tracks of the time – but the group is more than great enough on their own – with a funky edge that definitely lives up to their name, and a groove that's even sharper than the two aforementioned contemporary combos. Lead vocals are by James Carmichael, who's totally great – and titles include "Don't You Wanna Party", "Never Let It Go Away", "I Got My Mind Made Up", "Dark Vader", "Wide World Of Sports", and "You Say You Want Me To Stay". CD features 5 bonus tracks – "I Got My Mind Made Up (orig single)", "I Got My Mind Made Up (Larry Levan 12" mix)", "Crying (Larry Levan 12" mix)", "Crying (Bobby Guttadoro 12" mix)", and "Dark Vader (Pat Stapley 12" mix)". Krokofant with Stale Storlokken & Ingebrigt Haker FlatenQ (with bonus CD) ... LP
Rune Grammafon (Germany), 2019. New Copy ... $26.99
A modern bit of progressive avant jazz from Krokofant – a trio who take us back to some of the European power combos of the 70s, particularly those that could blend together electric styles and outside sounds in the Eastern Bloc scene! The core lineup features tremendous drums from Axel Skalstad, who also plays a bit of vibe – plus guitars from Tom Hasslan and saxes from Jorgen Mathisen – all used in a forward-thinking style that crests beautifully from the united energy of the trio! This time around, they've also got key help from Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass and Stale Storlokken on keyboards – both players who help churn up the sound even more! The keyboards have a way of locating the guitar and saxophones nicely – and we're not sure we've ever heard Ingebrigt's bass in just such a setting, but it really rises to the occasion. The album features one long piece – divided up into four parts. LP, Vinyl record album

The music here is every bit as political and socially conscious as earlier recordings of the genre – but you can also hear some of the cool 60s changes taking place on the Caribbean scene – including great use of horns to inflect most of the tunes with a great sort of edge – in the way Jamaican jazz and mento styles were shifting gears into rocksteady and ska! Caetano, Moreno, Tom, & Zeca VelosoOfertorio Ao Vivo (Brazilian version) ... CD
Universal (Brazil), 2018. New Copy ... $19.99
A fantastic family outing from Caetano Veloso – one that has the legendary Brazilian singer working with his sons Tom, Zeca, and Moreno Veloso! Moreno's probably the one who's best known to American audiences – thanks to his fantastic legacy of sounds with Domenico and Kassin in the +2 trio – but the approach here is quite different than those records, and maybe has the warm intimacy of Caetano in some of his best stripped-down modes! All members of the family play guitar and sing, and all had a hand in directing the music – but the lineup also shifts a bit from track to track – sometimes with vocals from all four, sometimes just Caetano in duet with one of the sons, sometimes just Caetano himself. If you love Veloso when he sings with just acoustic guitar and a bit of light backing, you'll find plenty to love here – on titles that include "Oracao Ao Tempo", "Boas Vindas", "Todo Homem", "O Seu Amor", "Genipapo Absoluto", "Reconvexo", "Um Canto De Afoxe Para O Bloco Do Ile", "Forca Estranha", and "Um Passo A Frente". The tunes are midtempo and laidback – most have both voices singing together, in this male/female blend that's really great and which maybe sounds even more compelling, given that the group hails from Ghana, which makes for a difference in language on the songs. BBE (UK), 2010s. New Copy ... $7.99 14.99
A killer collection of contemporary Afro Funk work – but all served up from quite a surprising source! The music here is all from Brazil, but also continues that nation's long tradition of sharing roots and culture with the continent across the Atlantic – a legacy that's sometimes been subtle, especially as sounds get localized – but which bursts out here with a renewed sense of pride and power! The style on many cuts is nicely different than some of the too-slavish Afro combos from up north – as these musicians aren't afraid to make their own shifts in sound, and leave their own mark on the music – so that much of the cuts feel more like a fusion between rootsier traditions from both sides of the ocean, often given a funky and jazzy spin. Ace (UK), 1970s/1980s/1990s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.98
A wonderful tribute to the songwriting genius of Leonard Cohen – one that begins with some of his key contemporaries taking on his important songs – then stretches out over the space of decades, to show just how important Cohen's material has been to more contemporary performers! In fact, given that Leonard never really cracked the charts during his early run for Columbia Records, he's actually maybe been one of those artists who are more "musicians' musicians", or "singers' singers" – because his talents have been a huge inspiration to so many other creators – a bit like the statement once made about the Velvet Underground, that they never sold many records – but every one of those records seemed to find a place in the hands of people who were then inspired by them. The package features the usual great Ace Records attention to detail, which includes copious notes on the material, and lots of the history behind the songs – for titles that include "Tower Of Song" by Marianne Faithfull, "Sisters Of Mercy" by Dion, "Lover Lover Lover" by David Blue, "Hey That's No Way To Say Goodbye" by Judy Collins, "Everybody Knows" by Barb Jungr, "Heart With No Companion" by Ron Sexsmith, "True Love Leaves No Traces" by Tom Northcott, "First We Take Manhattan" by Joe Cocker, "Avalanche" by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, "Chelsea Hotel No 2" by Rufus Wainwright, "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley, "Famous Blue Raincoat" by Marissa Nadler, "Suzanne" by Nina Simone, "Come Spend The Morning" by Lee Hazlewood, and "God Is Alive Magic Is Afoot" by Buffy Sainte Marie. Som Livre/Polysom (Brazil), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the coolest work we've ever heard from Moraes Moreira – a really unique hybrid of styles that includes samba soul, jazzy funk, and other Brazilian modes from the 70s – all wrapped up into a beautifully fresh and personal approach! There's elements here that would please any fan of Jorge Ben from the time, while other cuts have a more offbeat quality that echoes some of the very hip soundtrack material that was coming out at the time – especially on some of the records by some of Moraes' contemporaries on the Som Livre label. The whole thing is great – a really wonderful musical discovery – and titles include "Do Som", "Desabafo E Desafio", "Guitarra Baiana", "Sempre Cantando", "Violao Vagabundo", and "Se Voce Pensa". ✨✧ Marcos ValleGarra (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Odeon/Elemental (Spain), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Marcos Valle's most strangely beautiful albums – a set that really his him stepping off strongly from his bossa nova years – really moving into mindblowing music with a range of styles that's simply incredible! There's definitely a bit of bossa at the core, but the larger orchestrations are much more complex, and plenty darn groovy – bringing in some complicated jazz changes, a bit of soul, and even a touch of funk – making the first time that Valle ever worked in such a mode. The overall sound's nearly impossible to describe, but that's what makes the record so great – possibly the best place to start if you've ever wondered why Valle's gotten so much attention from the worldwide groove scene over the years! Titles include "Ao Amigo Tom", "O Cafona", "Minha Voz Vira Do Sol Da America", "Paz E Futebol", "Com Mais De 30", "Garra", "Wanda Vidal", and "Black is Beautiful". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bilal AbdurahmanEchoes Of Timbuktu & Beyond In Congo Square ... CD
Folkways, 1979. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A beautifully poetic take on the transplantation of African sounds in the US scene – played on a variety of different instruments by Bilal Abdurahman! The tracks are mostly short, percussive ones – with the strongest focus on instrumentation, but with occasional vocal refrains from Bilal – usually in wordless or chanted form, although there's a few nice spoken bits too! Instrumentation is quite diverse – and includes balafon, xalam, and even Ugandan harp – on titles that include "Spirits Of Congo Square", "Ancestral Ode", "Fusion", "Congo Square Procession", "Lament", "Blues Is Born", and "Gogi Solo". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

✨✧ Nat BirchallLive In Larissa – Divine Harmony In Duende Jazz Bar ... LP
Sound Soul & Spirit/Parafono (UK), 2013. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Sublime live sounds from the great Nat Birchall – one of the most spiritual jazzmen currently working today! The set has Nat and his quintet really stretching out – playing his own great compositions, plus some Impulse and Strata East classics too – all at an open, searching, constantly creative level that really lives up to their inspiration from the Coltrane generation! Nat himself plays tenor and soprano sax – and the group features piano, vibes, bass, and drums – plus a bit of bells as well. The whole thing's very spiritual – like some lost Strata set from the 70s – and titles include remakes of Clifford Jordan's "John Coltrane" and Alice Coltrane's "Journey In Satchidananda" – plus the tracks "Sacred Dimension", "The Black Ark", "Return To Ithaca", and "Divine Harmony". ✨✧ Mats Gustafsson & Jason AdasiewiczTimeless ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2018. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Two of our favorite living improvisers – vibist Jason Adasiewicz and saxophonist Mats Gustafsson – each completely tremendous on their own, and even more amazing here together! We're not sure the musicians have ever recorded together before – and the sound of this album is way more than we might even have expected – a beautiful collaboration that brings out very sensitive sides of both artists, but at a level that's also true to greatest depths of their creative powers! Mats works these fantastic textures on alto, tenor, and baritone sax – alongside mostly vibes from Jason, who adds in a bit of balafon too – on selections that are often quite tuneful, and maybe even evoke a more soulful side of both musicians. Things are never too intense, but still push the boundaries too – and titles include "See Them Cold But See Them Last", "Time Is Less", "Valerie", "Memory Is A Voice", "A Fall They Call It", and "Dagger". ✨✧ Caetano, Moreno, Tom, & Zeca VelosoOfertorio Ao Vivo ... CD
Universal, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Peter Brotzmann Chicago Tentet + 2Short Visit To Nowhere ... CD
Okka Disk, 2002. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A set that's a bit of a companion to the Brotzmann Chicago Tentet album Broken English – as it was recorded with the same lineup, on the same days – but a record that's also got a very different vibe of its own, thanks to the never-ending imagination of all the members of the group! As on the afore-mentioned record, the group here is expanded by two key guests – bassist William Parker and trumpeter Roy Campbell – east coast heavyweights brought in to an already great lineup that features reeds from Peter Brotzmann, Mars Williams, Mats Gustafsson, and Ken Vandermark – plus Joe McPhee on trumpet and valve trombone, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Kent Kessler on bass, Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello and violin, and both Michael Zerang and Hamid Drake on drums. Yet even with the two guests musicians, the Tentet manages to really feel the space around each individual musician in the lineup – working with amazing sensitivity, instead of overdone bombastic energy – creating sounds of chance and change on titles that include "Lightbox", "Short Visit To Nowhere", "Ellington", and "Hold That Thought". ✨✧ Krokofant with Stale Storlokken & Ingebrigt Haker FlatenQ ... CD
Rune Grammafon (Germany), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
CD

✨✧ Oneness Of JujuAfrican Rhythms (UK pressing – expanded) ... CD
Black Fire/Strut (UK), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A landmark of Afro-centric jazz in the 70s – and the first album by this famous underground collective! Oneness of Juju were a Washington DC-based group that grew out of the ashes of the Juju avant jazz ensemble – formed in the culturally rich African-American community of DC in the 70s, with spiritual and political aspirations that stretched far beyond the average funky combo. This first album is a masterful blend of percussion, jazz, and a slight bit of funk – alternating vocal tracks with harder-hitting jazz instrumentals, all held together under the leadership of sax player Plunky Nakabinde. The album's one of the greatest independent soul jazz albums of the 70s – and it's filled with great tracks, such as the breakbeat classic "African Rhythms" and "Liberation Dues". Other titles include "Kazi", "Funky Wood", "Don't Give Up", "Poo Too", and "Incognito". Expanded UK version also includes 2 bonus tracks – "African Rhythms (45 mix – parts 1 & 2)" and the previously-unreleased "Aforbeat". CD

✨✧ Sahib ShihabCompanionship – Jazz Joint Vol 2 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Vogue/Rearward (Italy), Late 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Double-length brilliance from the mighty Sahib Shihab – a set that collects a number of killer 60s sessions with members of the Clarke Boland Big Band – all of them great! The small combo work here is amazing – hard-hitting modal jazz that matches, if not tops the best MPS/Saba sounds of the time – all produced to perfection with a really sharp edge, and a cutting approach to jazz that's gone onto inspired countless others in the current scene – including artists on Schema and Ricky-Tick Records, as well as most Japanese club jazz combos! But long before any of those cats started copping his groove, Sahib Shihab had it all totally together – a great ear for his own amazing solos on baritone and flute, and a way of hooking up with players like Francy Boland on piano, Fats Sadi on vibes, Benny Bailey on trumpet, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums. All players here were Shihab's partners in the Clarke Boland Big Band, and they use these small combo sessions to explore some great new ideas – stripped-down groovers that are heavy on rhythm, and really allow full expression from all the players involved. Titles include "Companionship", "Om Mani Padme Hum", "Bohemia After Dark", "Serenata", "Yah Yah Blues", "Balafon", "Talk Some Yak-ee Dak", "The Turk's Bolero", "CT + CB", "Jay Jay", "Stoned Ghosts", "Just Give Me Time", and "Dijdar". ✨✧ Sonny VincentDiamond Distance & Liquid Fury – Sonny Vincent Primitive 1969-1976 (with download) ... LP
HoZac, Late 60s-Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A seriously strong batch of late 60s and early 70s recordings from earlier bands led by Sonny Vincent – later of relatively unsung NYC punk heroes The Testors (and featuring an unreleased Testors track) – here with early bands Distance, Fury and Liquid Diamonds and bridging the fuzzed out oozing rawness of proto punk like the Stooges and the MC5 at the time to, dare we say it, the kind of spontaneous guitar heroics of Hendrix without ever losing the pre-punk connective tissue. Vincent is a figure whose pedigree and influence reaches far and wide, having gone on from the punk era to play with Moe Tucker of the Velvet underground for years, and for being directly influential to later un-pigeonhole-able bands like Rocket From The Crypt, this is pretty great look at some of earliest stuff. Includes "She's Like Hiroshima", "Indecision", "Flying", "Aw Maw, "Scary" (the aforementioned Testors tune) and more – even a crazy old radio ad for a local NYC show that sounds like a drive-in movie clip! ✨✧ VariousEsterno Notte Jazz – Late Night Jazz & Cool Breaks From Untapped Italy Film Music Archives 1962 to 1969 (180 gram pressing – with bonus CD) ... LP
Four Flies (Italy), 1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Modern jazz from the Italian scene of the 60s – all of it recorded for film and soundtrack use, and almost none of is released before! The music here shows not just the fantastic advances in film scoring in the 60s, but also the overlooked growth of jazz in Italy at the same time too – shifts in sounds and styles that continue to amaze us – even if most of the commercial recordings never got much global circulation at the time! And these sounds are even more unusual and special than those – recorded by names that you'd recognize as both musicians and composers – and mostly presented in small combo modes that resonate strongly with rare Italian jazz records of the period. Titles include "Tempo Di Charlston" by Enrico Simonetti, "I Nostri Mariti" by Armando Trovajoli, "Amarsi Male" by Silvano Spadaccino, "Un'Ora Per Vivere" by Nino Tassone, "Desideri D'Estate" by Gino Peguri, "La Curruzione" by Giovanni Fusco, "La Donna E Una Cosa Meravigliosa" by Perio Piccioni, "La Ragazzola" by Romano Mussolini, and "Una Jena In Cassaforte" by Gianfranco E Gian Piero Reverberi. ✨✧ VariousLand Of 1000 Dances – The Complete Rampart Recordings (4CD box set) ... CD
Rampart/Minky, 1960s/1970s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic overview of the legendary Rampart Records – one of the strongest soul labels on the LA scene of the 60s, and a company that did some surprisingly compelling work in the 70s too! Rampart's biggest-ever act was Cannibal & The Headhunters – and the set is titled after their classic giant hit – but the company also really had a strong ear to the ground on the scene in East LA – which meant that they worked in a really great blend of modes that included vocal group soul, Latin-styled sounds, and plenty of funk and straighter soul too – before resurfacing in the late 70s with a more eclectic blend of music. This package is the first to really do justice to the complete Rampart legacy – and brings together every single issued by the imprint, who hardly ever put out full albums – a total of 79 tracks that's pretty darn heavy on the 60s, and which includes both the a-sides and b-sides of the singles. There's also a massive book, too – filled with notes on the story of the label, the details of all the songs, and a huge amount of photos – including a section on Rampart artists on the road in the 60s. A fantastic set, and a huge bargain for the price – with work by The Village Callers, Hummingbird 4, The Four Tempos, The Majestics, East Bay Soul Brass, Cannibal & The Headhunters, Phil & Del, Randy Thomas, Sammy Lee & The Summits, The Mixtures, Skylite, Eastside Connection, Graciela Palafox, and Raven. One of the most popular of the early collaborative LPs of Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood – the soundtrack album to the legendary Movin' With Nancy TV special from 1967 – featuring the eerie masterpiece "Some Velvet Morning" and more! The aforementioned tune is as incredible a track as either Nancy or Lee ever produced, but the album features other duet gems including "Jackson" with Lee, "Things" with Dino, and "Younger Than Springtime" with Frank – plus Nancy's sweet solo tunes "I Gotta Get Out Of This Town", "Wait Till You See Him", "Friday's Child", "This Town", and "What I Say".
