Black SabbathTechnical Ecstasy ... CD
Warner, 1976. Used ... $4.99
The cover here looks a bit slicker than some of the other Black Sabbath albums of the 70s – but the sound is anything but, and still flies the flag of all the greatness the group had to offer! The set was recorded at the famous Criteria Studios in Miami – home to some great soul sessions in the early part of the decade – and Tommy Iommi gives the band a sharp edge in the studio, bringing the guitars up and Ozzy's vocals into a nice sort of focus – reminding the world that Sabbath can still kick the ass of newcomers like AC/DC when needed. And like late 70s material by Led Zeppelin, which some purists of the time tend to dismiss – from the backward perspective of 40 years, the album sounds pretty darn great to our ears! Titles include "She's Gone", "Dirty Women", "It's Alright", "Gypsy", "Back Street Kids", "You Won't Change Me", and "All Moving Parts". CD

Billy CobhamMagic ... LP
Columbia, 1977. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $4.99
A real jammer of a record from Billy Cobham – almost a summation of all the work he'd done in earlier years, smoothed out with a sweet funky late 70s fusion groove! The sound on the set is really tight – still plenty hard on the instrumentation, but also with a focus that we really appreciate – one that's aimed as much at the soul-based jazz crowd as it is the headphone groovers who'd dug some of Cobham's trippier records in years past. Players on the set include Mark Soskin and Joachim Kuhn – both of whom add in some mighty nice keyboards – as well as guitarist Pete Maunu, whose jamming riffs make the best tunes crackle with electricity! Titles include "AC/DC", "Leaward Winds", "Puffnstuff", "Antares The Star", "Magic", and "On A Magic Carpet Ride". CD also adds in 2 bonus tracks – "Indigo" and "Guernica". LP, Vinyl record album

BGO (UK), 1977/1978. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Two 70s albums from drummer Billy Cobham – back to back in a single set! First up is Magic – a real jammer of a record from Billy Cobham – almost a summation of all the work he'd done in earlier years, smoothed out with a sweet funky late 70s fusion groove! Alivemutherforya features Billy Cobham live – very alive, in fact – and jamming like the "muther" promised in the title! The set's filled with heavy drums from Cobham, set in a group that also features fusion heavyweights Alphonso Johnson on bass, Steve Khan on guitar, Tom Scott on tenor and soprano sax, and Mark Soskin on keyboards – all working in ways that are more strongly in the funky jazz side of the fusion spectrum than some of Cobham's more rockish sets – with lots of lean, angular grooves that sound especially nice on the saxes and keyboards! Titles include "Anteres The Star", "Shadows", "Bahama Mama", "Some Punk Funk", "On A Magic Carpet Ride", and "Spindrift". CD

Fraternity/Pyramid Disco, 1979. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... $10.99
New mixes of two classic club tracks from DC LaRue – but mostly done in ways that completely change up the groove! "Face Of Love" is handled in versions by Johnny Juice, DJ Spinna, and Mell Starr – and Mell and Spinna keep the more classic vibe, but work out some very different elements – while Johnny Juice makes the whole thing almost feel like a hip house number! The approach is a bit similar on the flip – as the Juice mix of "Indiscreet" has a fair bit of hip hop elements – while Spinna chooses to focus on the massive bassline of the cut, and Mell makes the whole thing feel like a party! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Lots of forgettable radio fodder here, but there is the early Mykill Myers track "Hardcore 4 Eva", Pete Rock & CL Smooth's "In The House" off the Main Ingredient and a posse cut, "Let's Get It On", with Heavy D, Grand Puba, Spunk Bigga plus Biggie & 2Pac when they were still getting along. Zack O'Malley Greenburg3 Kings – Diddy, Dr Dre, Jay Z, & Hip Hop's Multibillion Dollar Rise (hardcover) ... Book
Little Brown, 2018. New Copy ... $3.99 28.00
A detailed look at the moment when hip hop went from a sideline to a mainstream force in the music business – a time when producers became executives, major labels allowed smaller boutique imprints, and everybody started making a lot more money on the music! As you'd guess from the title, the book follows the rise of Dr Dre, Jay Z, and Diddy – three of the biggest forces to go from the streets to the boardrooms – but the author also paints a much wider, more vibrant picture too – never too entranced by the stardom of the trio, and instead able to place their success in a longer narrative of hip hop recording, one in which many others never got a piece of the pie. 307 pages, hardcover, with some black and white images. A fantastic book on a unique slice of soundtrack culture – the rise of the sci-fi soundtrack in the 60s and 70s, which also matched a real rise in new musical styles too! The book is filled with color images of vintage records, but is also way more than just an artwork book – as the authors have interviews with some key composers – including Stu Phillips and Laurence Rosenthal – and really provide a history of the genre through the 80s, which might have been its biggest decade on vinyl! These guys gave us a great book on horror soundtracks – Blood On Black Wax – and this book may well even top that one. 270 pages, full color, hardcover. Book

Modern Harmonic, 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $25.99
A really cool side of work from the enigmatic Raymond Scott – the legendary midcentury figure who did a wealth of creative work in jazz, soundtrack, and electronic music fields! Turns out, Scott also recorded a heck of a lot of commercials in his studio – all in ways that embrace all the many modes that Raymond did so well – a good number of which also feature lead vocals from his wife Dorothy Collins – a great recording star in her own right! The songs here are all pretty darn short – usually just a minute or less – but the set features a whopping 82 numbers in all, and is a fantastic representation of this lost side of the Raymond Scott legacy – all packaged beautifully with plenty of notes, and sound quality strong enough to move this material way past the demo archive status. Includes ads and jingles for a wide variety of products – from Hamm's Beer, to RCA TV, Gold Medal Flower, Teryton Cigarettes, Krystal Hamburgers, Sprite soda, Revlon Hair Spray, and other big products for the 50s homemaker! Also includes a few rare jingles sung by Mel Torme, too. CD

Soul Jazz (UK), Mid 90s. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
Amazing sounds from a time when the London scene really took off – when it left behind some of its slavish love of American sounds in previous decades, and exploded with blinding dancefloor energy of its own! The music here represents a true UK hybrid – crafted after years of American house hitting the UK shores, transforming into the happier grooves of the early e-driven years, all while Thatcher's Britain kept stepping further into the dark. Enter the sounds of the city – a new wave of electric energy that was instantly urban and cosmic at the same time – beats that were as bold as hip hop, but even faster than house music – balanced by heavy-stepping, bass-bottom cuts that represented a far evolution beyond more familiar dub! The mix of modes set a fire that was heard around the world – leading to rhythmic changes for decades to come – and this great little package samples some of the best from the underground at the time, a scene that was already getting plenty of its own inspiration from the young Soul Jazz label. Titles include "Durban Poison" by Babylon Timewarp, "The Smokers Rhythm" by Rhythm For Reasons, "Snowball Remix" by Trip One, "Time & Age" by The Freaky, "Tings A Go On" by DJ Dubplate, "RK1" by The Terrorist, "Way Of Life" by New Vision, "Chill Out" by Hi Fi Power, "House Sensation" by Nu Jacks, and "Burial" by Leviticus. Parlophone, 2020. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A record that's a bit of an anomaly, given that it was created in the time of Covid – as the Gorillaz work here with a whole host of guest stars – in the kind of musical party that most local authorities would shut down! Yet given the virtual nature of the group – the core of Damon Albarn and Remi Kabaka – the approach is a great one for the very unusual year of 2020 – as they open the creative door to contributions from Beck, Schoolboy Q, Robert Smith, Elton John, Peter Hook, Fatoumata Diawara, St Vincent, Slowthai, Leee John, and others. The record is accompanied by the kind of graphics that have helped cement the mixed imaginary image of the band – and titles include "Strange Timez", "The Valley Of The Pagans", "The Lost Chord", "Momentary Bliss", "Dead Butterflies", "Friday 13th", and "Chalk Tablet Towers". Kenney tells his tale with a decidedly biased approach, but without any rancor towards his bigger bandmates – just a real love of the music, and the sense of boundless energy and adventure that especially graced his earlier years in rock and roll! Da Capo, 2016. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An insanely detailed book on the role of drugs in American music – written by a guy who's already written a fair bit about drugs and culture! This time around, Martin Torgoff turns his eye towards the postwar years – looking at the interwoven landscapes of jazz, underground culture, and drugs from the late 40s through the 60s – with chapters that look at both famous figures and lesser-known personas – in a list that includes Billie Holiday, Lester Young, William S Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Charlie Parker, and many more. The book's filled with short chapters that almost each read like a story themselves – never too exploitative, and often never with any sort of judgement at all – just surprising detail about the relation between drugs and performance, writing, or other artistic creation. These short chapters work well to weave together a world behind the scenes – subtle forces that later shaped more famous creations – and the book is a hefty 412 pages, with some black and white images. The second half of the book features Lacy's own writings, again over the pace of decades – on his own music, and topics like FMP Records, Albert Alyer, Thelonious Monk, and jazz overseas – all topics that Lacy can easily speak on from experience. Chicago Review Press, 2012. New Copy ... $4.99 29.95
A stunning look at the great Mary Wells – one of Motown's first female acts of the 60s, and one of the decade's most important early soul figures as well! Mary's work on record is very well-known, but the story behind the music is completely different, and surprisingly dark at times – a tale of a talented artist often caught between larger corporate forces, and personal antagonists as well – not to mention her own personal demons. Peter Benjaminson does a great job of getting at all these details without being overly sensational – and he works in lots of wonderful personal recollections from friends and colleagues who really help illuminate the more private moments. Billy BraggRoots Radicals & Rockers – How Skiffle Changed The World (hardcover) ... Book
Faber & Faber (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $8.99 29.95
You'll know Billy Bragg as a singer/songwriter, but he's also a surprisingly strong historian and author here – giving us a vivid look at the rise of skiffle bands on the UK scene at the end of the 50s! Skiffle was something that never played as strongly on our shores, but was inspired by American blues and folk – influences that younger UK artists used to create raw acoustic music that was heavy on rhythm, and a great contrast to the overproduced pop of England's post-war years! Long before the Beatles and the Stones, skiffle bands were the hippest things going in the British underground – and Billy Bragg does a great job of tracing the movement and showing its impact – something that's long overdue in the annals of music writing that's often too America-centric on the influences of British rockers in the 60s. 431 pages, hardcover, with some black and white images. Errol Brown & The RevolutionariesCulture Dub/Medley Dub (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Doctor Bird (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
Two classic albums of dub from Erroll Brown – both maybe a bit more obscure than his classics of the time, but which also show the real depths of his talents! Culture Dub is a batch of instrumental dubs of songs from Culture – who were then riding high after their Two Sevens Clash album – taken here by Brown into very moody, very abstract territory – a stretched-out, spacey sound that has all sorts of cool guitar and keyboard elements bubbling amidst the murky basslines and drums. Titles include "Everyday Love Dub", "Skillful Dub", "Iron Sharp Dub", "Freedom Jam", "Deep Root Dub", and "Harder Than The Rest Dub". Medley Dub is a very different record overall – one that reworks older recordings from Sonia Pottinger's catalog of the late 60s and early 70s – rocksteady modes taken into dub territory, with really amazing results! You'll hear momentary echoes of the old amidst the soundclash of the new – and titles include "Revelation Of Dub", "Trinity Of Dub", "Tip Top Affair", "Engineer's Special", "Natty Dutty Dub", and "Swing & Dub". 2CD set features 24 more bonus tracks – Culture-related tracks that include "Work On dub", "Dog A Nyam Dub", "Freedom Rock", "Natty Dub", and "Jah Rastafari (version)" – and 15 other Brown dubs from the late 70s – including "Merry Go Round Version", "In The Park Version", "Lick Version", "Blue Bird Dub", "Revolutionary Version", "Stormy Dub", and "Road Hog". ChangeTurn On Your Radio (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic/Big Break (UK), 1985. Used ... $14.99
A great later album from Change – not nearly as well-known as their first few hits, but still in that all-solid approach to the groove that was the Change trademark during the early 80s! The sound is a bit more stripped down than before – tight beats and keyboards, mostly in a mellow to midtempo mode – all topped with vocals from male and female members of the group! Change still have a great way with a hook here – an approach to soul that's tight and professional, yet not nearly as cloying as some of the chart-climbing acts of their generation. And as before, the keyboards are almost as great as the vocals – with slight jazzy inflections that warm up the tunes nicely! A hefty book on the short-lived New Barbarians – a rock and roll supergroup founded by guitarist Ron Wood – with members that include bassist Stanley Clarke, drummer Joseph Modeliste of The Meters, saxophonist Bobby Keys, and the legendary Keith Richards! The book is filled with photos from the group's years of touring in 1979 and 1980 – mostly bold action shots on stage, paired with shorter bits of text that almost serve like diary entries on the music. Daniel Clowes/Alvin BuenavaenturaArt Of Daniel Clowes – Modern Cartoonist (hardcover) ... Book
Abrams Comic Arts, 2012. New Copy ... $12.99 40.00
We've been living with the comics of Daniel Clowes for so many years, we sometimes forget how great he is – so fortunately, we've got this wonderful book to remind us of his genius all over again! Clowes is incredible – a comic stylist who's not only drunk deep of the best modes of the postwar giants, but also found a way to turn their aesthetic into a voice that's completely his own – never derivative at all, and always with a freshness that keeps things interesting over the decades! Most folks know him for Ghost World or some of his graphic novels – but this book goes way way back, and looks at his earliest work, his earlier Lloyd Lewellyn and Eightball magazines, and a wealth of other projects – with images from so many different strands of his creative life. The book also features an interview with Clowes, essays by Chris Ware and Chip Kidd, and lots more too – all presented as an oversized art book – full color throughout, hardcover, and 224 pages. Don CunninghamSomething For Everyone (2020 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Luv N' Haight, 1965. New Copy (reissue)... On November 27, 2020
A strange little record – but one with some very groovy moments! The album is a rare relic from the St Louis scene of the early 60s – cut by the combo of Don Cunningham, the house act at that city's Playboy club at the time! Don borrows heavily from the styles of Martin Denny, Bobby Montez, Earl Grant, and Nat King Cole – but he also puts the work together with a jazzier edge than you'd expect, one that makes for more than a few really great moments that have made the album a treasure for groove hounds for years! The album sports a mad reading of "Quiet Village", one that has the band getting really crazy with percussion and birdcalls, hardly "quiet" at all! The real standout, though, is the group's cover of "Tabu" – done with a great percussion break on the intro, and a chugging Latin groove that's sure to burn up any dancefloor! Also great is the album's two Brazilian-tinged numbers – jazzy remakes of "Manha De Carnival" and "Samba De Orpheus" – both of which feature some great percussion! (Note: This item is not for sale online until noon on Friday, November 27. Bang/Wounded Bird, 1970. New Copy ... $6.99 11.99
A little bit of Paul Davis is a mighty nice thing – a surprisingly strong dose of blue-eyed soul, of the sort that's got perfect placement on the Bang Records label of Bert Berns! A few years earlier, and Davis would have been a real chart-crosser – the kind of singer who's unabashedly at home with soul-drenched arrangements, handled here by Chips Moman and Jeff Barry – and who's also never trying to hard too act cool, or fool the world into thinking that he's some hardcore dude – a balance that's totally great, and which keeps things groovy, soulful, and swinging throughout! Titles include "If I Wuz A Magician", "Sally's Sayin Somethin", "Supernatural Power", "I Just Wanna Keep It Together", "Rainy Sunday Mornin", "A Little Bit Of Soap", and "Who's Gonna Love Me Tomorrow". There's a man standing on the cover, but you might have to look close to see him – and that's part of the style of Liu Bolin – a Chinese artist who paints himself to blend in with his surroundings! The approach is pretty darn amazing – sometimes more successful than others, and always a fantastic commentary on the role of the individual – especially in the urban setting from which Bolin sprang. Each oversize page features a large full color image – and there's as many photographs done in Europe as there are anywhere else – further illustrating Liu's ability to blend into his surroundings! 223 pages, hardcover, oversize, and full color. World Circuit/Nonesuch, 2003. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
The second album recorded by Cuban vocal legend Ibrahim Ferrer in the wake of the Buena Vista Social Club phenomenon – and maybe the best! Ferrer's vocals are superb throughout – and the production is relatively stripped down, and never too intrusive – even when producer Ry Cooder is getting some time on the tracks on guitar. To our ears, the best musical element may be the bassist Cachaito – whose rock-solid lines ground everything perfectly – on titles that include "No Tiene Telarana", "Naufragio", "Fuiste Cruel", "Boquinene", "Boliviana", and "Hay Que Entrarle A Palos A Ese". This new version features fresh mastering by Ry Cooder, a shifted song order, and unreleased tracks that include "Ojos Malvados", "Me Voy Pa Sibanicu", "Mujer", and "Ven Conmigo Guajira". CD

Justin GiffordStreet Poison – The Biography Of Iceberg Slim (hardcover) ... Book
Doubleday, 2015. New Copy ... $4.99 26.95
The legendary Iceberg Slim has given us plenty of his own story over the years – but this book is the first to look at the man behind the man – writer Robert Beck, who started as a pimp and became a surprisingly successful author – as well as an underground figure who inspired a later generation of hip hop artists as well! If you've ever read any of Slim's books, you'll know the world that he came from – but author Justin Gifford gets past the hype of the character, and looks at Beck's background and upbringing, his sometimes less-than-successful career as a hustler, and his move to convey the spirit of the streets on paper. Gifford's an academic, but presents the book in a nicely lively style – and the whole thing is hardcover, 265 pages, with some black and white images. Book

Stuart L GoosmanGroup Harmony – The Black Urban Roots Of Rhythm & Blues ... Book
University Of Pennsylvania, 2005. New Copy ... $4.99 24.95
Group soul harmony gets some great treatment here – in a well-done book that follows the music from the street corner to the airwaves – all with a thoughtful mixture of oral history and the larger issues of the time! Author Stuart Goosman focuses especially on harmony groups on the Baltimore and Washington DC scenes of the postwar years – with a lot of detail on The Orioles, one of the first great groups in the tradition – and some of the smaller acts of the period as well – and the book begins with the initial postwar rise in the format, then looks at the huge wave of group harmony during the doo wop years. Although an academic book, the tone is never dry – and the oral history material really illuminates the music a great deal. 291 pages, softcover, with some black and white images. Book

Now Again, Early 70s. New Copy ... $7.99 17.98
Raw, rumbling outsider psych from Stephen David Heitkotter – a wild and raucous stream of rambling genius from the early 70s! There's a loose, bluesy approach at the core – with long songs and a disquieting, yet engrossing mood that makes the set one of the most compelling lost rock records of the early 70s. This amazing set of Cali bedroom psych (literally – it was recorded in a bedroom) has built up a deservedly lofty legacy in collectors circles, but it's also something of a mystery – which is what makes this Now Again issue such a treasure. The whole package has been very well researched, and long unanswered questions about Heitkotter and the recording(s) are answered at long last – in a solid booklet of of notes by Eothen Alapatt with rare photos, and an even rawer batch of bonus material. Kent/Dolemite, Early 70s. New Copy ... $5.99 12.98
Rudy Ray Moore cut some mighty raunchy records in his time – but this one may well the be the raunchiest, and maybe the funkiest too! The album's an instruction of "the proper way to make love to a lady" – but done in true Rudy Ray style, with very down-to-earth language that really takes off from the first few sentences – serving up an array of explicit descriptions and references to body parts that make the most hardcore hip hoppers seem like they're singing nursery rhymes! The music is wonderful, too – very funky congas and drums, pounding away behind the vocals, with some funky guitar touches too – all at a level that really makes the raw lyrics move. Parental Guidance is highly recommended – but that's also part of the pleasure of the record, too! CD

Iggy Pop's mid-to-late 70s era working David Bowie as a co-writer, producer and incredible creative foil – in a 7CD box set! It includes Iggy's first 2 and to this day all-time great solo albums The Idiot and Lust For Life, neither of which seem to have aged a day since 1977, a full CD of alternate mixes and out-takes, the original classic live album TV Eye – 1977 that compiled soundboard recordings from the '77 tour – and perhaps this box set's deepest dug treasure trove – 3CDs of complete sets from that same 1977 tour at London's Rainbow Theatre, The Agora in Cleveland, and at Mantra Studios in Chicago! While the Idiot and Lust Of Life showed Iggy to be a lot more versatile of a front man and songwriter to anyone who might not have seen past the manic firebrand howling out front for The Stooges, his live material from that era is pretty amazing too, embracing the Stooges catalog with some of the more innovative style of his early solo albums –bigger arrangements, woozy keyboards and soulful back up singers among them without sacrificing any of the...well, we gotta say it...any of the raw power. Nearly as ferocious as ever but with a real sense of style and craft – and there's a wealth of it collected here for the first time ever. Also includes a 40-page hardback book! CD

ReplacementsLet It Be ... CD
Restless/Ryko, 1984. Used ... $3.99
The masterpiece by one of the greatest genuine rock bands of all time – finally remastered! Let It Be veers all over the place, or at least as much as jangly rock music can, in the best way possible. Includes the pseudo twangy opener "I Will Dare", with the distinctly midwestern hardcore of the group's earlier years showing up on "We're Coming Out" and "Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out", and Westerberg's great heart-on-sleeve, ragged balladry appearing for the closers. Like the Meat Puppets and X, the 'Mats really found themselves after they shed the rigid rules of punk rock, and developed into something every bit as genuine. They followed the rock songbook just enough to keep their work warm and familiar, but with way too huge and hard-pounding heart to ever seem even the least bit derivative. Hell, they even make Kiss's "Black Diamond" sound sincere! Other tracks include "Favorite Thing", "Androgynous", "Unsatisfied", "Seen Your Video", "Gary's Got A Boner", "Sixteen Blue" and "Answering Machine". CD

Philip Wilson Publishers (UK), 2009. New Copy ... $3.99 53.00
A really special selection of work from British artist David Harrison – a large volume that focuses mostly on his paintings of the early 21st Century – a time in his career when Harrison was creating these amazing paintings that were both representational and fantastic at the same time! The images are incredible – figures in landscapes, often in action, but usually with some sort of dream-like quality – but painted in a way that at once feels as if the work has been aged, which is very different than the modes of the surrealists in the 20th Century. And although the images are surreal, they're also maybe more evocative of older folklore than dreams – or maybe a secret world that can only be discovered when in the right mindset. The book is hardcover, 191 pages, and filled with full color reproductions throughout. Book

Hard to go wrong with a Stones classic like this one – a record that really has the group hitting their late 60s stride, and coming across with a depth and power that really goes beyond their earlier releases! There's a sinister quality to the record right from the start – thanks to the brooding, haunting power of "Gimmie Shelter" – and the sublime "Monkey Man", which may well be one of our favorite Rolling Stones songs ever! But the whole thing's great – and other tracks include "Love In Vain", "Let It Bleed", "Live With Me", "Midnight Rambler", "Country Honk", and the classic "You Can't Always Get What You Want". GEC/P-Vine (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $20.99
A rare funky gem from the Chicago scene in the pre-house years – but a set that also might be a crucial bridge between the city's 70s soul and the underground clubs that would soon give the world a new groove! The group have plenty of funk elements in the mix – kind of a tightened-up version of P-Funk at times, with lots of bass in the mix – and all these cool moogy keyboard touches – topped by vocals from the group – who often have a call to action sort of vibe, really urging on the groove! The record's definitely too hardcore to have gotten much national radio play – sharper and more wicked than the major label funk of the time – and the use of female vocals in the mix also have a very different vibe than in disco, too – a quality that's hard to describe, but which really stands out. The set features some arrangements by Floyd Morris and Tom Tom 84 – two mighty legends in the Chicago soul scene – and titles include "Doin' It To Def", which has sort of a "We Will Rock You" intro, plus "Hot Spot", "Grab Your Sexy Baby", and "Funk Power". A very unusual sort of diary from writer David Sedaris – but maybe that's what we'd expect, given that Sedaris has always been something of an unusual figure himself! The book does feature diary entries, often from moments when Sedaris was visiting a certain place – but there's also a very strong visual component – as most pages feature more images than text – illustrations done by David, mixed with found elements and items from the location – almost with the feel of a shadow box illustrating a moment in time! There's some pages that are very unique – in that they even feature extra layers of inserts on top of the images – and there's a section at the end that also shows the outsides of the diaries, which are often as visually stunning as their contents. Rare Afro Rock from Nigeria's Semi-Colon group – and it's an astonishingly strong record! It's got fuzzy guitar grooves and spacey electic piano that are indebted to the global psych soul and rock scenes of the late 60s and early 70s – but the rhythmic sensibility, percussion and vocals are prime 70s Nigeria. John SzwedBillie Holiday – The Musician & The Myth (hardcover) ... Book
Viking, 2015. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
John Szwed has given us pivotal books on Miles Davis and Sun Ra – and this time around, he's turning his eye to the life and music of Billie Holiday – offering up a very fresh vision of the oft-told tale of the singer and her career! As the title might imply, Szwed gets past the myth that so often surrounds Holiday's tragic life, and really looks at the singer and her groundbreaking approach to her music – almost looking at things from a technical perspective instead of a personal one – but while also addressing some of the overwrought cliches that have crept into a mainstream understanding of her recordings. There's still plenty of jazz history and biography in the mix – but Szwed almost chooses to start anew with the story, and in doing so, present us with one of the most compelling accounts of Billie and her music to date. 230 pages, hardcover. Pat ThomasDid It – From Yippie To Yuppie – Jerry Rubin An American Revolutionary (hardcover) ... Book
Fantagraphics, 2017. New Copy ... $8.99 49.99
A surprisingly beautiful book on the famous 60s radical Jerry Rubin – one that's not only the first-ever look at the man's life, politics, and influence – but one that's also presented in a lavishly visual style that really conveys the crossroads of art and ideas of which Rubin was a key part! The book is even better than Pat Thomas' previous book, Listen Whitey – and has the same heavily visual feel as that one – as words from Rubin and his contemporaries are mixed with larger historical information, an incredible amount of cultural sidebars – and hundreds of fantastic images from the 60s onwards. Rubin's known as one of the founding fathers of the yippies – the Youth International Party, which gave political focus to the freedoms of hippies, and was a key part of the protests in Chicago in 1968. But the man's also had a much larger, even more colorful life – and this book really gets at all of that, and then some – one of those rare cases where you pick up a book on someone, and actually find yourself far more illuminated than before – both in terms of the subject, and their larger cultural role. 253 very vivid pages, hardcover, and done in the best Fantagraphics style. ALA/Water, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $7.99 17.98
A rare bit of hardcore poetry by the Watts Prophets – the legendary LA group who were kind of a west coast answer to the Last Poets! The group have a sound that's as striking as the best early work by The Last Poets – a hard-hitting blend of poetry, rhythms, and righteous energy – all recorded in a style that's stripped down, proud, angry, and in stark contrast to the rest of the work coming out in the soul music industry at the time. Their work was not only some of the most radical and striking of the early 70s, but it's also gone onto become a key blueprint for hip hop of later years – especially the rough-edged style of the west coast that began to emerge at the end of the 80s. CD brings together all the tracks from the group's 2 albums – a total of 41 short tunes that pack the punch of a hand grenade! ✨✧ Wells FargoWatch Out (CD & hardcover book) ... CD
Now Again, Late 70s. New Copy ... $8.99 19.98
Funky-strutting genius from Wells Fargo – one of the coolest, heaviest acts to come out of the Zimbabwe scene of the 70s – a moment when hard rock and soulful basslines came together brilliantly, to power the raw edge of a handful of groups like this! The music is maybe more late 60s than you'd guess from the date – that heady Zamrock return to the rawer corners of the American underground, at a time when so many of the bigger groups overseas were hitting AOR status – yet an approach that also mixes in plenty of lessons learned from early 70s funk and soul, especially in the massive basslines at the core of the tunes. This is the first time the group's music has ever been reissued outside of Zimbabwe – and the package brings together 11 of their rare singles – with titles that include "Bump Bump Babe", "Bwanawe", "Carrying On", "Too Long Away", "Shades Of Wells Fargo", "Love Is The In Thing", "Watch Out", and "Coming Home". CD
(Very cool package – a complete 72 page, hardcover book – with loads of notes on the band, and a huge amount of vintage images too!)

XUnder The Big Black Sun (expanded & remastered) ... CD
Elektra/Rhino, 1982. Used ... $5.99
A key part of the initial tremendous legacy of X – one of the greatest run of records that any group could ever hope for! This third set has the group honing and refining their sound even more – losing none of their roots in the LA hardcore scene, but also inflecting their sound with a complexity that none of their previous scenemates could match – a sense of musicianship that was never too polished, but always razor sharp – at a level that brought even more righteous power to their lyrics and completely unique songplay. The quartet are one of the greatest ever in rock and roll – and this album's a classic that transcends time and style – essential listening on a shortlist of the best guitar-based sounds of the late 20th century. Titles include "The Hungry Wolf", "Riding With Mary", "Under The Big Black Sun", "Blue Spark", "Because I Do", and "Motel Room In My Bed". 5 bonus tracks including "Breathless (single mix)", "Riding With Mary (single version)", "X Rewrites El Paso (rehearsha)/Because I Do (TV mix/inst)", "Universal Corner (live)" and "How I (Learned My Lesson) (live)", for a total of 16 songs in all CD

Kourosh YaghmaeiBack From The Brink – Pre-Revolution Psychedelic Rock From Iran – 1973 to 1979 ... CD
Now Again, 1970s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $9.99 19.98
Melodic psychedelia from 70s Iran – an incredible full scale anthology of recordings by guitarist and vocalist Kourosh Yaghmaei from the pre-revolution years – and an absolute treasure! Kouroush often recorded with his brothers – Kourosh singing lead and playing guitars or bass – with Kamran Yaghmaei on guitars and backing vocals and Kambiz Yaghmaei on keys and backing vocals. Other players contribute drums, bass and occasional additional elements – harmonica or horns on few tracks. The sound is a really wonderful amalgam of western garage, psych and strains of funk with native Iranian modes and tempos. The songs here sink in on an emotional level without us knowing a word of the language – the passionate vocals work wonderfully in that regard – but musically, it's innovative stuff that's nicely tripped out and heavily rhythmic, without compromising the melodic sensibility. The 2CD version features 30 tracks in all – bound in a thick, hardcover book style package – featuring extensive notes and photos, with Kourosh's story told in autobiographical detail. Like other recent Now Again packages, it's really beautifully done! Titles include "Gol E Yakh", "Dar Enteha", "Paiz", "Leila", "Del Dareh Pir Misheh", "Shirin Joon", "Ghazal", "Mosafere Shahre Baran", "Saghe", "Niyayesh", "Saraabe Toe", "Baroona", "Khaar", Bachehaye Khoobe Koocheh" and more. Strut (UK), Late 70s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
A great look at one of our favorite record labels of all time – a company that was one of the first we ever worked together with, back when we started Dusty Groove – and whose music has been a huge inspiration to us for decades! Black Fire is a really special record label from the DC area – not just a jazz imprint, but more of an artistic collective – maybe similar to what Tribe Records was to the Detroit scene of the 70s, but also more open to more soulful sounds too – which is what really makes so many of these tracks so great – as they have a perfect balance between jazz, funk, and soul – kind of that through-line that the Chicago scene had as things moved from Sun Ra, to Phil Cohran, on to the Pharoahs and Earth Wind & Fire! That trajectory is key here – as many of the players were rooted in more avant jazz styles, but were also eager to communicate their message in ways that were more universal – which is why the music here has such lasting appeal over the years – as it's filled with messages of love and peace, life and pride – with an intensity that maybe makes these tracks every bit as important now as when they were first recorded. The best-known group on the set is Oneness Of Juju, but there's work from the whole spectrum of Black Fire artists – tracks that include "Look At The People" by Wayne Davis, "Doin The Carvin For Thabo" by Lon Moshe, "African Rhythms (live 1975)" by Oneness Of Juju, "Children Of Tomorrow's Dreams" by Theatre West, "People" by Experience Unlimited, "Follow Me" by Okyerema Asante, "Third House" by Southern Energy Ensemble, and "Drummers From Ibadan" by Byard Lancaster. Faber & Faber (UK), 2015. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredibly dense book on the psychedelic scene of the 60s – a huge volume that not only looks at an impressive array of music, but also the wider trippy culture, too – but all with a level of text that goes far beyond most of the thinner volumes on the period! Many of the chapter titles refer to key musical texts, but then quickly extrapolate from those moments – soaring out from "I Am The Blackgold Of The Sun", "The Greta Garbo Home For Wayward Boys & Girls", and "Painting With Light" – and looking at psychedelia on both sides of the Atlantic in the 60s, with lots of surprising insights along the way. Despite a very vivid cover, the book itself is all text, no images – a hefty 638 pages, hardcover, and a very deep read! Book

One of the great lost groups of the UK scene of the 60s – not lost to UK audiences, or to hipsters over the generations – but still an act that never made the impact on these shores that they should! The Creation are step in step right up there with early material by The Who or Small Faces – and share a similar groundbreaking re-fusion of American roots into a new London groove – all with searing guitars, clever wordplay, and a cutting-edge spirit that may well have kept them off our charts – but which makes them so great to discover all these many years later. You might have caught a few of their songs over the years – thanks to soundtrack placement from directors like Wes Anderson, or covers by many of their bigger fans. This 2CD set features 46 tracks in all, with remastering overseen by original producer Shel Talmy – and the set includes early sides by The Mark Four, some alternate takes, and even new mixes – plus an 80 page hardcover book with scores of photos, other images, session and discographical details, and a new essay too. One of the greatest writers on singers presents his essential collection of albums from the 20th century – all served up with the kind of loving detail that's always made the prose of Will Friedwald so great! Will's written the book on Frank Sinatra – literally – and on Tony Bennett, and a number of other singers too – and you've no doubt stumbled across his words in liner notes for reissues over the years. This time, Friedwald expands that later genre – and offers up full chapters that go in depth to some key vocal jazz classics – including Something Cool by June Christy, My Gentleman Friend by Blossom Dearie, Ella In Berlin by Ella Fitzgerald, John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman, Rain Or Shine by Dick Haymes, Lady In Satin by Billie Holiday, Black Coffee by Peggy Lee, and even Belly Of The Sun by Cassandra Wilson! There's a few dozen more titles covered in the book – which has 51 chapters in all – and the heavy book also features an album cover reproduction for each title, and a discography as well. 402 pages, hardcover. Cinevox (Italy), 1969. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sublime work from Piero Piccioni – a really Morricone-like soundtrack, and one that's filled with hauntingly beautiful melodies! There's a lightly gliding feel to the record that's really wonderful – light lines on organ, topped with wordless vocals from Edda Dell'Orso and I Cantori Moderni, alternating to suit the mood of the film, and really bringing out some of the most lovely qualities in Piccioni's music. The tunes unfold gently, like the petals of a flower in soft summer rains – and there's also an undercurrent of darkness at a few points, but one that hardly gets in the way of the breathy, bossa-styled tunes. Titles include "La Torre", "Da Soli In Vacanza", "Capriccio", "The Redcoat", "I Cavalli", and "Nero Piu Bianco". Writer John Corbett has given us words on a huge variety of musical styles over the years – a fair bit of them left field and avant – but this time around, he's tackling the full range of 70s rock, pop, and soul music – in a huge book that's unlike anything he's ever written before! First off, the large volume is very personal – part listening autobiography, part paean to the musical giants who shaped the decade, and part hindsight record review of all the amazing sounds that were created during the 70s! The book follows the decade with year-by-year chapters – yet it's hardly a history at all – as Corbett picks key songs and albums as touchstones for each year – partly because of their impact, but more because of the power they had for him as a listener. The albums run the gamut – from Nursery Cryme by Genesis, to Les Stances A Sophie by The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, to Pink Moon by Nick Drake – and songs include "Sex Machine" by James Brown, "School's Out" by Alice Cooper, and "Long Time" by Boston. 496 pages, hardcover. The book is a very hefty 724 pages – as hefty as the first – and is hardcover, with a fair bit of images in sections in the middle. Book

✨✧ Lee HazlewoodLee Hazlewoodism – Its Cause & Cure (with bonus tracks) ... CD
MGM/Light In The Attic, 1966. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We love Lee Hazlewood – and this album is one of his best! The record's a stunning batch of Lee's original compositions – all wonderful examples of the way that Lee could take a postwar fascination with Western themes and images, and turn it on itself to reveal the anxieties and frustrations of the 60s generation – all with a smooth presentation and near-perfect backings from the legendary Billy Strange! If you ever needed proof of why Lee Hazlewood's so great, this album may well be it – a record we'd gladly trade for a dozen by other 60s singer/songwriters. Titles include "The Girls In Paris", "After Six", "In Our Time", "Jose", "The Old Man & His Guitar", "Dark In My Heart", and "The Nights". Fantastic stuff! Great reissue features three bonus tracks from Lee Hazlewood's Woodchucks – "Frenesi", "Muchacho", and "Batman". CD

✨✧ Juju/Oneness Of Juju/Experience UnlimitedBlack Fire Set (Live At The East/Chapter Two/African Rhythms/Space Jungle Luv/Free Yourself) (5LP set) ... LP
Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy 5LP ... Out Of Stock
Five full albums from the legendary Black Fire label – a DC-based imprint that was home to a heck of a lot of knowledge and power back in the 70s! First up is Live At The East – a never-issued performance by the legendary spiritual jazz group Juju – the genre-crossing combo who'd later expand to the full Oneness Of Juju ensemble! This set captures the group in more avant formation than their later funky records – more clearly tied to a late Coltrane inspiration, but with some of the energy of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago and other creative improvisational groups – especially in the way the members of the lineup seem to effortlessly shift instruments over the course of the long tunes on the set! The vibe is very similar to the Juju albums on Strata East – and this set might be thought of as a chapter three to those two records – with a lineup that features the mighty Plunky Nakabinde on tenor, soprano, flute, and percussion – plus Al Hammel Rasul on piano, Lon Moshe on vibes and percussion, Ken Shabala on bass, and Babatunde and Jalango on percussion and vocals too. Titles include "Black Experience", "Struggle Home", "At Least We Have A Horizon Now", and "Soledad Brothers". Next is Chapter Two – the rare second album from Juju – the avant jazz collective who'd later morph into funk band Oneness Of Juju, but who still sound pretty revolutionary here! There's a bit more focus than before – still energy that's a lot like the best righteous jazz groups coming out of Chicago or St Louis at the same time, but maybe a bit more direct, too – and really showing some of the stronger spiritual tones that would only blossom more strongly in later years! Reedman Plunky Nakabinde is firmly at the helm of the group – on tenor, flute, and soprano sax – but the set also features great work from Lon Moshe on vibes and percussion, Babatunde on congas and drums, Phil Branch on bass, and Al-Hammond Raul on piano and percussion. The sounds are a bit less Afro-styled than on the Oneness records, but still have all the great spiritual currents – and titles include an excellent version of Pharoah Sanders' "Black Unity", plus the original tunes "Contradiction","Nia", "Black Experience", and "The End Of The Butterfly King". On the next record, the group shifts into the new name Oneness Of Juju, and delivers African Rhythms – a landmark of 70s Afro-styled jazz – and the first album by this famous underground collective! Oneness of Juju were a Washington DC-based group that grew out of the ashes of the Juju avant jazz ensemble – formed in the culturally rich African-American community of DC in the 70s, with spiritual and political aspirations that stretched far beyond the average funky combo. This first album is a masterful blend of percussion, jazz, and a slight bit of funk – alternating vocal tracks with harder-hitting jazz instrumentals, all held together under the leadership of sax player Plunky Nakabinde – a reedman whose work here alone is worth the price of admission – laid out nicely alongside some great percussion, Fender Rhodes, and wonderfully worm vocals on a few tracks. The album's one of the greatest independent soul jazz albums of the 70s – and it's filled with great tracks, such as the breakbeat classic "African Rhythms" and "Liberation Dues" – plus "Kazi", "Funky Wood", "Don't Give Up", "Poo Too", and "Incognito". The group returns on Space Jungle Luv – a fantastic record from one of the greatest underground jazz groups of the 70s! Oneness of Juju are perhaps best known for the heavy funk of their first album, African Rhythms – but we're actually partial to this second album – a warmly spiritual batch of soul jazz tracks, and a set that's filled with life, emotion, and wonderful instrumentation throughout! The group are a bit more relaxed overall – easing into things, but in a way that really builds up as the album moves on – as they layer together heavy percussion, sweet keyboards, and lots of great sax solos from Plunky Nakabinde – plus wonderfully warm vocals that add a soulful edge the group never had before, but which still is very jazzy – and not like the funky club of later years. The whole thing's wonderfully cohesive, and a treasure throughout – and titles include the warm vocal number "River Luvrite", to the harder hitting "Space Jungle Funk", and other gems like "Soul Love Now", "Follow Me", "The Connection", and "Love's Messenger". Lastly, Experience Unlimited serve up a wonderfully spiritual album – and one that's maybe a bit of a surprise, given the later fame of the group! The group here is billed by their full name – Experience Unlimited – but where later known to most of the world as EU, the DC funk outfit that went onto become pretty big in the GoGo scene, and who scored big with the 80s party cut "Da Butt". Yet as a classic album on the Black Fire label, this record is nothing like their 80s material at all – and instead catches the group when they were part of a more spiritual scene, the same DC one that gave the world Oneness Of Juju and the larger family of Black Fire artists! This album has the group very much in a mid 70s Earth Wind & Fire mode – jamming hard and free, with plenty of electric guitar riffing, funky keyboards, horns, and lots of percussion. Some tracks have vocals, and some are instrumentals – but the whole thing's an extremely unified album with a great overall vibe – and a message to match the title and the cover. Titles include "Functus", "Free Yourself", "Hey You", "It's All Imagination", and "Funk Consciousness". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Numero Group/Sory SanleBobo Yeye – Belle Epoque In Upper Volta (hardcover) ... Book
Numero, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful book from the Numero Group – one that was part of a larger LP package, but which more than stands alone on itself here! The hefty volume features dozens of pages of photographs at the core – all taken by photographer Sory Sanle during the early years of independence in Upper Volta – and a mix of studio portraits and outside shots, including a fair bit of music material. The portraits are especially amazing – with backdrops chosen for the subjects in many of the images, and clothing that's beautifully stylized, in a mix of more familiar 70s fashions with West African touches. The outside shots include dancers and concerts – and resonate with the contents of the end of the book – notes on some of the key groups in the Upper Volta scene, plus pages of images of rare vintage records too. Hardcover, with black and white photos on 12" square glossy pages, followed by color images in the last section. Book

✨✧ Robert Harshorn Shimshak (ed)Bill Owens – Working (hardcover) ... Book
Fotofolio, 2008. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Amazing photographs from the 70s – all part of a "work" project by photographer Bill Owens, who shot most of these images in the Central Valley of California! Owens showed up while folks were working, snapped a portrait of them at their job – and also took down a brief statement from each individual on the job – so that the book presents these beautiful images along with a snippet from the subject on the role of their work. Jobs include a nude model, sandblaster, exterminator, baker, sports car driver, and even a maker of prosthetic eyeballs – all captured in various striking ways, most in black and white, a few in color. A great document of everyday life in the 70s – hardcover, 120 pages, and very nicely done. Book

✨✧ Elvis CostelloUnfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink (hardcover) ... Book
Penguin Books, 2015. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderfully-written autobiography from Elvis Costello – a book that's not only completely illuminating for any fan of his music, but which stands quite strongly on his own, even if you're not a longtime fan of the man himself! The volume almost sets a new standard for musician autobiographies – as Costello approaches the project with the sort of zeal he's brought to his new "second role" in popular culture over the past few decades – that of being as much of a raconteur as a singer, as much as a spotlight on other genius as he is a genius himself – always handled with the sense of pointed prose and honesty you'd find in his music. The book is huge – and filled with black and white photos too. A heavy 672 pages, and hardcover. Book

✨✧ Robin Jaffee FrankConey Island – Visions Of An American Dreamland 1861 to 2008 (hardcover) ... Book
Yale University Press, 2015. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Coney Island is a hell of a place – a refuge for New Yorkers for over 100 years, and still pretty amazing today – with a surprisingly strong legacy that also includes the park's influence on more serious artists over the decades, a legacy that's presented beautifully in this oversize book! The volume's not a glossy presentation of the tourist mecca – but instead a very well-done, well-researched art book – featuring paintings, photographs, film stills, and other images that show the way that Coney Island figured in the larger high art community in and around New York – representations by folks as diverse as Weegee, Woody Allen, Robert Mapplethorpe, Bruce Davidson, Reginald Marsh, and dozens of others. The large book is a monograph for a museum exhibit, but clearly goes far beyond the event – and also features text by Charles Musser, Robin Jaffee Frank, Josh Glick, and others. 286 heavy hardcover pages – with color and black and white images throughout!
