✨✧ Charlie ChristianElectric Charlie Christian ... CD
Uptown, 1939/1940. Used ... $16.99
A heady helping of rare work from Charlie Christian – exactly the kind of set that will show you the genius he introduced to the jazz guitar! Although plenty of cats were playing acoustic swing on the instrument in the 30s, Charlie really picked up the sound with an electrified vibe – setting the stage for Wes Montgomery, Barney Kessel, Grant Green, and countless others to come! These rare sides from 1939 and 1940 offer up beautiful work from Christian – sharp-edged and soulful, swinging but almost with a hint of early bop – pulled from rare tapes, but cleaned up very nicely for the reissue. The first batch of tracks feature Christian on guitar in a quartet with Jerry Jerome on tenor, Frankie Hines, and Oscar Pettiford on bass recorded at the Harlem Breakfast Club in 1939. Next are some 1939 and 1940 broadcasts with a sextet led by Benny Goodman, also featuring Lionel Hampton on vibes, either Johnny Guarnieri or Fletcher Henderson on piano, Art Bernstein on bass, and Nick Fatool on drums. CD features 17 tracks in all – including "Tea For Two", "Stardust", "Flying Home", "AC DC Current", "Dinah", "Sheik Of Araby", "Six Appeal", and "Seven Come Elven". CD

Billy CobhamAyajala Live ... CD
Hi Hat, 1978. Used ... $16.99
A really sweet late 70s live set from drummer Billy Cobham – recorded live in Chicago, and done with a groove that's right up there with his best Atlantic Records albums from the mid 70s! Billy's on fire throughout, but is also much more in his funky style than his rockish mode – working here with a great lineup that includes deft keyboards from Mark Soskin, guitars from Ray Mouton and Charles Singleton – who also plays a bit of reeds as well. Randy Jackson provides some mighty heavy bass, and Alvin Batiste adds some surprisingly nice clarinet lines to the mix – on titles that include "On A Magic Carpet Ride", "AC/DC", and "Ayajala", and a "Drum Solo" too! ✨✧ Chris MarkerStaring Back (hardcover) ... Book
MIT Press, 2007. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A career-spanning retrospective of the photographic side of Chris Marker – an artist who's probably better-known for his work in film, such as the seminal La Jetee – a movie that is really just a set of photographs too! The title gives away part of the approach here – as a good number of the images in the book have the photographic subject staring back at the camera – yet these are also mixed with other images from around the globe, over the space of decades – presented here in beautiful black and white images that are as striking as the one on the cover. The book also features a bit of writing by Marker on his work, and some essays from others as well – in a hardcover edition, 157 pages, with black and white images throughout. Book

A fantastic book for any fan of rare Italian soundtracks – particularly the work of the great Ennio Morricone – whose genius here is portrayed in the style of an album cover art book, with full color reproductions of cover of hundreds of rare and classic albums! The whole thing is beautiful – like finding a stash of rare soundtrack albums, with information added to each – and the heavy, oversized book is 362 pages in length, and full color throughout. Book

A really great look at these crucial 60s years of Jamaican music – a really transformative time that's presented here in a mix of history, personal recollections, label detail, and a whole bunch of label scans and photos too! The book looks and feels like a discography – including its heavy hardcover package, and well-bound pages – which really let you know that you're in for an unconventional look at the music! The project comes from the Jamaican Recordings label, who've done some great reissues over the years – and as such, the book almost has a way of looking at the music through the lens of vinyl, which makes for a really wonderful approach. Hanif AbdurraqibA Little Devil In America – Notes In Praise Of Black Performance (hardcover) ... Book
Random House, 2021. New Copy ... $8.99 27.99
Hanif Abdurraqib gave us a great book on Tribe Called Quest a few years back – and here, he turns his fantastic prose to a range of other artists, singers, and musicians – all presented with a fantastic balance of personal reflection mixed with a deep understanding of their work! The subjects range from Aretha Franklin to Don Shirley, Josephine Baker, Whitney Houston, Wu-Tang, and many others – presented by Abdurraqib in ways that are really different than usual, and often cast in the larger setting of the black experience in America – echoing some of Hanif's other writings too. Abdurraqib is easily one of the most compelling essayists on music and culture to emerge in the past few decades – and this well-done volume runs for 300 pages in length in this hardcover edition. Robert DardenNothing But Love In God's Water – Black Sacred Music From Sit-Ins to Resurrection City (hardcover) ... Book

Things really heat up in this second volume of Robert Darden's look at the rise of gospel in America – as he traces the music's journey from the pulpit to the public, from praise to protest – and really illuminates the power that gospel and its inspiration brought to black identity from the 60s onward! This volume is even bigger than the first, and really overflows with research and information – a hugely documented project that features pages of notes at the end, and black and white images throughout the larger first section – as Darden does a fantastic job of mixing music, politics, and cultural progression. Hardcover edition is 334 pages. Book

MFA, 2017. New Copy ... $12.99 45.99
A fascinating look at a little-explored form of wartime propaganda – not the posters or flyers that are normally associated with such efforts, but the smaller postcard format – one that had a surprisingly strong role in the early part of the 20th Century! The book looks not just at wartime postcards from WWI and WWII, but also materials from between and before the wars too – the latter of which circulated as efforts to stimulate support for the struggles ahead. And there's a great scope of material too – hundreds of postcards, all in full color – from England, Germany, France, the Soviet Union, and other nations wrapped up in the global conflicts of the time. The authors provide text to frame the images – and this hardcover edition is 272 pages, in color throughout. Book

Juan OrtizLost In Space – The Art Of Juan Ortiz (hardcover) ... Book
Titan (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $9.99 39.99
A huge book of oversized posters from artist Juan Ortiz – all based on specific episodes of the 60s sci fi classic Lost In Space – and presented here in a dizzying array of styles! As you can see by the image on the front, Ortiz has a strong eye for retro modes – and throughout the book, he creates all these cool color images that follow the show, season by season, episode by episode – creating a picture for each, in ways that are sometimes like movie posters, other times like book jackets, subway ads, and other older styles. The images are very cool, even if you don't know the show (but we do – and love it) – and there's a white margin on the side of each image, so you could cut out the very large pages, and have yourself a whole room full of posters – or just enjoy the book as it is. Book is hardcover, 120 pages, and a very large 10.5" x 14.5". Book

Cannongate (UK), 2021. New Copy ... $10.99 25.99
The great Tracey Thorn was always a pretty great songwriter – as you'll know from her solo work, and her classic contributions to Everything But The Girl – and it turns out, she's also a pretty great author too – one who has a way of looking at life that's every bit as pointed as the lyrics of her songs! This book's not Tracey's first, but it continues the great run of memoir material she's given us in recent years – first the tale of her longtime friendship with drummer Lindy Morrison, originally of the Go-Betweens – and second, a musing on the role of women in popular music, with both triumphs and challenges given equal space on the page. Hardcover, 247 pages. Book

✨✧ Horace TapscottSongs Of The Unsung – The Musical & Social Journey Of Horace Tapscott (hardcover) ... Book
Duke University Press, 2001. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A long-overdue moment of exposure for pianist Horace Tapscott – one of the greatest creative forces in west coast jazz in the 60s, 70s, and 80s – but an artist whose genius was often kept away from the limelight! That hardly seemed to matter to Tapscott, though – as his legacy is tremendous, finally given full exposure by this autobiography, which then paved the way for new presentations of his music in years to come – a surprisingly large legacy of reissues that we wish Horace could have seen in his too-short life! Yet despite that, it's clear that the man himself took a lot of price in his music – as you'll read in this live story, which documents Tapscott's move to LA as a young child, his creation of the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, and all his many other projects – which were often tied to cultural and political developments in south LA. MIT Press, 2018. New Copy Book ... Out Of Stock
One of the smartest books we've ever seen on album cover art – a lavish full color volume that not only presents loads of classic images, but also has plenty to say about them as well! The book is a bit smaller than LP format – maybe 8" square overall – but it's filled with loads of full page reproductions of classic hi fi, bachelor pad, and mood music album covers – most with a facing page of test that really examines the images, and also offers up other historical details too! The authors really follow a direction that's inspirational – treating these album covers not as kitsch, but as a rich document of midcentury America at the crossroads – full of deeper meaning if you know how to read things the right way. The book features chapters that include "Let's Have a Dinner Party", "Music For Hi Fi Living", "Cuba", "Airlines", "Adventures In Sound", "Sound Tour", and "Capitol Of The World" – and the hardcover volume is 420 pages, full color, with great notes at the end! Yet the book is way more than just another poster book – as the images here come with plenty of text – thoughtful writings on trends, styles, and key figures in black film – amidst words and images that pull no punches on treatment of race and social issues. Part one of a massive two volume set that looks at the growth and change in African American sacred music from the Civil War onwards – shifts that occurred for years before the music became to be known as gospel, but with an ear towards all those elements that would really come to the forefront in the postwar years! Writer Robert Darden has roots both in the field of gospel journalism, and academia – and he blends both together in ways that follow a well-researched body of evidence, but also presents things in a very down to earth way at points. Steidl (Germany), 2015. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful black and white photographs of contemporary Cuba – most shot at a level that really gets at the timeless quality of life in the nation after the US and west have left it behind! The images are from both urban and rural locations, and do a great job of getting past some of the overdone shots we always see from Havana – in part because the black and white is a nice change from the oversaturated color that's usually used to portray Cuba, and also because the mix of non-Havana locations really opens the book up with a good sense of variety. The handsome art book is hardcover, with dozens of fantastic photographs, and a small bit of text. Book

CommonResurrection (2LP blue swirl vinyl pressing – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Relativity/Get On Down, 1994. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $30.99 34.99
In 1994 when everyone seemed to be turning hardcore, Common Sense wasn't having it – and gave the world this superb second album that formed a key part of his soon-to-be huge legacy! The album's very near and dear to our Chicago-born hearts – and is filled with introspective tales of growing up and living on the South Side, given perfect support by the production of No ID – a real overlooked hero of this generation! The album was made with little regard to trends of the time, and that's given it a timeless quality that really holds on over the years – maybe even more so than some of Common's later, bigger records. The set features two guest appearances by Y-Not aka Twilight Tone – and titles include "I Used To Love HER", "Book Of Life", "Chapter 13", "Nuthin' To Do", "In My Own World (Check The Method)", "Maintaining", "Communism", "Watermelon", "Thisisme", and "Sum Sh*t I Wrote". (And bonus trivia – Chicago station WHPK, a breeding ground for Dusty Groove, even gets a mention on the set!). This excellent 2LP deluxe vinyl reissue includes a side featuring 3 bonus tracks – "Resurrection 95", "Resurrection (Large Professor mix)", and "Resurrection (Extra P rmx)". LP, Vinyl record album

Kant (Czech Republic), 2012. New Copy ... $6.99 45.00
New York drinking spots – all photographed in a really timeless way by Czech photographer Jiri Erml – a guy who clearly knows his way around a tavern! The images here are all from the early 90s, but they're also all black and white – and taken in a way that feels much older than that – partly because Erml really seems drawn to the older drinking establishments in the city – and also because he loves to capture the aging, overlooked parts of the spaces! These aren't nightclubs or big hotspots from the time – but instead the taverns are mostly local, each with their own character and spirit – reflected in shots that include its patrons and bartenders, and often just the interior landscape of the bar itself. 117 pages, hardcover, black and white. Warner, 1974. New Copy 2LP ... $36.99 39.99
A very different live set than some of the more familiar Fleetwood Mac performances of the 70s – as the setting here is nicely intimate, recorded "live in studio" at the legendary Record Plant – in a set that was originally designed for radio broadcast at the time! There's both an intimacy and spontaneity here that's wonderful – the group without all of the studio sharpness, and just getting into the tunes on their own – and also without some of the larger fanfare and stage posture of an arena set – all of which makes for really wonderful presentation of the songs! Both Bob Welch and Christine McVie have a nicely human quality on their vocals – and titles include "Future Games", "Sentimental Lady", "The Green Manalishi", "Angel", "Why", "Believe Me", "Rattlesnake Shake", "Hypnotized", "Black Magic Woman/Oh Well", and "Bermuda Triangle". Ben GreenmanDig If You Will The Picture – Funk, Sex, & God In The Music Of Prince (hardcover) ... Book
Henry Holt & Company, 2017. New Copy ... $6.99 28.00
A nice change from the usual book on the music and life of Prince – as author Ben Greenman brings in a fair bit of analysis as he moves through the career of the legendary soul singer – all in ways that are strongly hinted at by the title! Greenman divides the book up into four sections that showcase his approach – Man Music, Meaning, Method Madness, and Memory – the last of which deals with the too-soon passing of Prince, and the huge impact he had on music in the past few decades. There's still plenty of biography in the book, but the author also analyses things along the way and puts them into a nice sense of perspective – maybe one that's easier to do after the artist's passing, which was the case with this project. Questlove provides the introduction – and the book is hardcover, and 286 pages. Book

Johnny HallydayFlagrant Delit (3CD set – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Philips/Universal (France), 1971. New Copy 3CD ... $14.99 35.99
French rocker Johnny Hallyday hits the 70s, with a sound and style that's a bit funky, and a bit touched by some of the crossover American trends coming out of the LA rock scene. This one's arranged mostly by Mickey Jones and Tommy Brown, who'd done some excellent work with Hallyday on earlier records – and the music is kind of a post-Muscle Shoals/Memphis sound, with lots of honky tonk piano, bubbling organ riffs, and backings that are generally more in the soul/rock camp than in Hallyday's earlier pop rock style. Titles include "La Joi", "L'Autre Motif", "Flagrant Delit", "Fils De Personne", and "Fille De La Nuit". This 3CD package is very cool – and comes in a 10" hardcover book, with a full bonus CD of unissued material from the original sessions – lots of alternate takes, and the unissued tunes "Waterloo" and "Reste". Also features a 3rd CD, with a full Paris live show from September of 1971 – a chance to hear Hallyday really let loose in front of a crowd! CD
(In a very cool hardcover package – with bonus notes as well!)

Glenn HeadChicago – A Comix Memoir By Glenn Head (hardcover) ... Book
Fantagraphics, 2015. New Copy ... $6.99 24.99
A pretty great memoir from comic artist Glenn Head – done in a style that reminds us of some of the first and best early underground work of this nature – but with a lot more cohesion and depth overall! The book-length piece tells the tale of Glenn's escape from New Jersey, and arrival in the seedier side of Chicago back in the day – served up here in surprisingly gritty detail! The book pulls no punches – and in addition to being a very frank, and sometimes chilling memoir of these years of Head's life – it also re-creates the less-squeaky clean world that first allowed underground comix to emerge, and give their important voice to shaping culture in the 70s. The book is hardcover, black and white, and 160 pages in all. Book

✨✧ Buck HillCapital Hill (with bonus track) ... CD
Muse, 1989. Used ... $5.99
A cooker from DC tenorist Buck Hill – one of those great local players who never got their due strongly until late in life! Buck's got a tremendous sound on his horn – full and rich in feeling, with occasional raspy edges that really grab us, and a warm command of his instrument that really belies his many decades in music. Yet Buck's also not just blowing familiar notes, either – and, like Von Freeman out of Chicago, he's a dedicatedly creative player who keeps things on edge throughout the set, even in familiar territory. The approach is a bit like that of Ben Webster late in life, but sharper overall – and the group on the date includes Barry Harris on piano, Ray Drummond on bass, and Freddie Waits on drums. Titles include "Jazz Ballad", "Tenor Madness", "On The Trail", "Hail To The Redskins",a nd "Chelsea Bridge". CD also features the bonus track "Vierd Blues". CD

A beautiful look at a legendary English magazine – one that helped define the style and politics of the British scene in the late 60s and early 70s – often with an audacious approach that was years ahead of its time! The images within are wonderful – really incredible cover art, inside photographs, and all sorts of graphics that present a changing British culture at its most striking – laid out on these large, oversize pages that allow for juxtaposition of different features and articles, often at a level that still allows you to read the text alongside the tremendous images. The book begins with a section that features the complete covers of the decade-long run of the magazine – the moves into chronological sections of inside contents, which show a wonderfully vibrant and ever-changing aesthetic. Hardcover edition is 232 pages, oversize, and filled with images in both color and black and white. Book

Willis JacksonSmoking With Willis ... LP
Cadet, 1965. Very Good ... $14.99 18.99
A great album from Willis Jackson – a real sleeper, and with a very groovy feel! Willis smokes with an organ combo that has Butch Cornell at the keys, and which also features Vince Corrao on guitar and Franklyn Robinson on trumpet. The tracks are a mix of originals and Beatles covers (believe it or not!), and Willis is in that playful mid-60s mode, where he's working with so much profiency on the tenor that he can take some groovy chances on the solos. The rhythm's got a great Cadet soul jazz vibe to it – and the album fits nicely with some of Jack McDuff's work on the same label. Titles include "Yesterday", "Hard Day's Night", "Goose Pimples", and "Doin' The Mudcat". LP, Vinyl record album

Great early work from jazz singer Al Jarreau – live tracks recorded in Washington, DC – and done with a laidback style that's a nice change from some of his studio work on Warner Brothers! The group is small – just a trio, with Fender Rhodes from Tom Canning – and Al's got plenty of room to slide around and show off his amazing talent for unusual phrasings, in that special territory that was always somewhere between soul music and more standard jazz vocals – with some scatting, non-vocal passages that are really incredible! Delmonico, 2018. New Copy ... $7.99 50.00
A haunting mix of photographs from California artist Steve Kahn – material shot in the 70s with both a very unusual style, and a really unique mix of subject matter! The title's a reference to the rooms that Kahn rented out for the project – mostly shot in very stark black and white, with a high sense of contrast that seems to push out some of the detail, and almost abstract the images – which include series of windows, mirrors, corners, and even "bound doors" – which involve doors tied with rope! There's also some nudes in the book too – sometimes posed as part of the landscape, sometimes a bit more human – and the hardcover book also features essays on Kahn's work. Shiloh/Americana Anthropology, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 26.99
The only studio album ever recorded by this important acoustic group – a west coast bluegrass combo whose contributions to the scene were a key influence on the birth of country rock in Los Angeles! The group here are definitely hardcore – a lineup that features work from Clarence White on guitar, Roland White on mandolin, and Erick White on bass – and vocals from all three – served up at a level that's even leaner and grittier than 60s recordings by bigger names in the field, like Jimmy Martin or Bill Monroe – yet also maybe free of any "too folk" approaches as well, given that these guys really dive into the music without any sort of pose or artifice at all. Titles include a great version of Merle Haggard's "Fugitive" – plus "One Tear", "Take Off Your Cheaters", "Earl's Breakdown", "I Might Take You Back Again", and "Soldier's Joy". This reissue adds some great unissued bonus material – including "Head Over Heels In Love With You", "I'll Go Steppin Too", "Flint Hill Special", "Shuckin The Corn", and "Shady Grave". Envelope (Netherlands), 2021. Near Mint- ... $4.99 6.99
A really fantastic record, and one that's very different than you might expect from a record with "improvised" in the title! There's certainly improvisation on the record, but in a standard jazz way – the set's not free jazz, but a wonderful batch of modern jazz ideas, with a crackle that reminds us of the hippest UK sets of the mid 60s, some of the groundbreaking Chicago work of the late 50s, and maybe even the way that Charles Mingus could allow free play within a group that was also moving forward strongly together! The lineup features Knimes on drums, Jose Cervera on alto and flute, Yiannis Marinos on trombone, and Ignacio Santoro on bass – a piano-less quartet that does a fantastic job with the leader's original compositions. Titles include "A Journey Through Sound & Colors", "DC", "Clean", "The Haunt", "Be A Vampire", and "Waltz For Gloria". LP, Vinyl record album

A huge moment for Ministry – and the record that strongly brought forward all the underground styles that Al Jourgenson was bringing to the Chicago scene! The vocals and overall sound are a lot rawer than ever before – especially the earliest Ministry music, which was more in a Brit pop mode – and the record is honestly more of a Wax Trax release, as it shows Al's strong links to the industrial underground that had grown up around that Chicago label – as well as a surprising interest in hardcore too. Recorded in both Chicago and London – and titles that include "Deity", "The Missing", "Destruction", "Golden Dawn", "Stigmata", "Land Of Rape & Honey", and "Flashback". 2LP edition features bonus tracks – including "Stigmata (rmx)" and "Tonight We Murder". Norvo may have cut some sleepy recordings in his day, but his early sides are usually all pretty great – especially this material, recorded with Tal Farlow on guitar and Charles Mingus on bass! The drum-less combination of vibes, guitar, and bass makes for an almost-exotic approach – one that rings out with some new moods and tones on tracks that are old standards – in a manner that really helps us understand why folks from the old days think Norvo's so great! The package features four CDs worth of solo performances by Parker on both soprano and tenor – much of which showcases his amazing sense of continued flow, with a breath technique that's even more mindblowing when you consider his advanced years – when many of his contemporaries might just get winded walking up the stairs. A famous broadcast performance by this legendary bassist – but one that's presented here in a version that features 40 minutes of music that never aired on the original program! This well-recorded set captures Jaco Pastorius at his height – after a huge step forward in sound and style in the 70s – to a time when he was exploring so many new ideas, and new ways of expressing himself on the electric bass – an instrument that he completely transformed for generations to come! The group's a large one – Jaco's Word Of Mouth ensemble – with Bob Mintzer on tenor and soprano sax, Randy Brecker on trumpet, Peter Erskine on drums, and Don Alias on percussion – plus Othello Molineaux on some mighty cool steel drums. There's a larger horn section, too – and Toots Theielmans plays a bit of guest harmonica – and most tracks are nice and long. A fantastic collection of images from Times Square, pulled from the years before Disney took over – at a time when the action moved 24 hours a day, and at a non-stop pace! Bill Butterworth was right on the streets during the early 80s – and presents stunning full color shots of a range of figures from the Deuce – strippers, short order cooks, merchants, hustlers, b boys, Guardian Angels, and others – often in posed portraits in their environs, but occasionally captured in more candid ways too. The look and feel of the photographs is great – similar to some of the Powerhouse books on old school hip hop culture – and the whole thing is hardcover, and overflowing with great shots. Book

Gil Scott-HeronNew Black Poet – Small Talk At 125th & Lenox ... CD
Flying Dutchman/BGP, 1971. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
The first-ever album from Gil Scott-Heron – and a perfect bridge between the world of his writing and the years to come of musical transformations that would forever change the American scene! The set's not the warm, jazzy soul of some of Gil's later records – and instead, there's a really raw vibe, mostly with Gil speaking instead of singing – often with just heavy percussion at the core, and these really righteous words served out over the top! All the work is his own, and the album's a showcase for his brilliant protest poetry – the most famous example of which is included in "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", which leads off the album with an especially righteous groove! The set's a key link in the African American musical tradition of the 20th century – and proof that the underground, while not always afforded a good place in the broadcast markets of the US, could always burst forth in the "narrowcast" medium of recorded music. A landmark album – one we like even better than the early work by the Last Poets – and great all the way through! Tracks include "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", "Whitey On The Moon", "Who'll Pay Reparations On My Soul?", "The Subject Was Faggots", and "Brother". CD

Sire/Rhino, 1977. New Copy 4CD ... $90.99 99.99
The mindblowing first album by The Talking Heads – a bold statement by a very young band who'd go on to shape the sounds of the left field for generations to come! The sound is spare and very focused – maybe the first layer that David Byrne would then build up when adding more percussion, horns, electronics, and some of those elements from funk and global music that were such a continuing influence. Here, the group's fresh out of school, filled with imagination, and able to do so much with just a little – all led by Byrne's fantastic sense of songwriting and presentation – in a mode that's completely his own. The record's not punk, not new wave, and still continues to be in its own space of inventiveness, imagination, and forthright lyricism. Every song's a classic – and titles include "Uh-Oh Love Comes To Town", "New Feeling", "Tentative Decisions", "Happy Day", "Who Is It", "No Compassion", "The Book I Read", "Don't Worry About The Government", "First Week/Last Week Carefree", "Psycho Killer", and "Pulled Up". 3CD version features the full album remastered on CD1. Work by a contemporary group, but one that exposes a lost moment in the long career of modern jazz genius Kenny Wheeler – a point when the composer/trumpeter was writing music for film and TV scores – mostly just for broadcast on the BBC, and not recorded on any of Kenny's own albums of the time! The vibe of these tracks takes off beautifully from his groundbreaking Windmill Tilter project with John Dankworth – large, beautiful arrangements that still feature key solo passages throughout – often with a fair bit of brass solos, handled in the way that Wheeler might have – with solos Brian Lynch, James Copus, Nick Smart, and Etienne Charles on flugelhorn – as well as Ingrid Jensen and John Daversa on trumpets – plus Chris Potter on tenor, Evan Parker on soprano and tenor, and Shelly Berg on piano. There's some great Fender Rhodes on many of the titles, and the great Norma Winstone contributes her amazing voice to two tracks – "Sweet Yakity Waltz" and "Some Days Are Better" – and other titles include "Some Doors Are Better Open", "Everybody Knows It", "DGS","Song For Someone", and "Who's Standing In My Corner". Entropy Stereo, 1977/2003. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great late 70s performance from Bobby Bradford and his Extet – a group that wasn't nearly as well documented as his combo with John Carter, but one that's almost equally great! The material here is from a 1977 radio broadcast, and is very well recorded – quite open and unrestrained, with lots of space for the group to open up in a range of new ideas! Bradford's in the lead on cornet, and other members include James Newton on flute, Richard Rehwald on bass, and John Goldsmith on drums – the latter two of whom we don't know at all, but both players who really hold their own in the company of these horn heavyweights. Newton's flute has a nice degree of bite, and matches the fire in Bradford's horn nicely – and like other records of the time from Bobby, there's a nice sense of soul and structure – a bit more tightness than work of the period from the east coast, and a somewhat spiritual undercurrent, even when things get a bit free. Titles include "Improvisation #12", "Blue Monk", "She", and "Comin On" – and the CD also features the bonus track "She", recorded in 2003 as a duet between Bradford and Vinny Golia. CD

Writer John Corbett has given us words on a huge variety of musical styles over the years – a fair bit of them left field and avant – but this time around, he's tackling the full range of 70s rock, pop, and soul music – in a huge book that's unlike anything he's ever written before! First off, the large volume is very personal – part listening autobiography, part paean to the musical giants who shaped the decade, and part hindsight record review of all the amazing sounds that were created during the 70s! The book follows the decade with year-by-year chapters – yet it's hardly a history at all – as Corbett picks key songs and albums as touchstones for each year – partly because of their impact, but more because of the power they had for him as a listener. The albums run the gamut – from Nursery Cryme by Genesis, to Les Stances A Sophie by The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, to Pink Moon by Nick Drake – and songs include "Sex Machine" by James Brown, "School's Out" by Alice Cooper, and "Long Time" by Boston. 496 pages, hardcover. ✨✧ DickiesDawn Of The Dickies (with bonus tracks) ... CD
A&M/Captain Oi (UK), 1979. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Really great work from The Dickies – a group who are sometimes dismissed for their sense of humor, but who have a way of serving up a blistering set of hardcore to match some of their best contemporaries on the Posh Boy label! The tunes are short, sharp, and witty – almost power pop in the way they hang on hooks and tight wordplay, but definitely delivered with the energy that marks the group's roots in the Cali scene. Titles include their wonderful high-speed reworking of "Nights In White Satin" – plus "Where Did His Eye Go", "Fan Mail", "I'm A Chollo", "She Loves me Not", "I've Got A Splitting Hedachi", and "Attack Of The Mole Men". CD features the bonus tracks "Gigantor" and "Bowling With Bedrock Barney". CD

✨✧ Quincy JonesComplete Quincy Jones – My Journeys & Passions – Photos, Letters, Memories & More From Q's Personal Collection (hardcover) ... Book
Insight, 2008. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very cool book – not just a biography on Quincy Jones, but one that's filled with photos, letters, and other things from his personal collection – plus some very cool "artifacts" as well! The volume's put together like a mini-museum of Q's life – and features pull-out treasures from different periods of his life – little surprises that are hidden in envelopes and jackets, to be discovered as you turn the page – making the reading of the book almost like an archeological dig into Jones' rich career! The artifacts are reproduced wonderfully – record covers, letters, and lots more – all in full color, in this oversized book that's every bit as visually enjoyable as an old Quincy Jones record! 140 pages, hardcover – but with lots more inside to expand the page count too. ✨✧ AH LawrenceDuke Ellington & His World – A Biography (hardcover) ... Book
Routledge (UK), 2001. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An unusual biography on the life and music of Duke Ellington – unusual in that it's penned by a fellow musician, trombonist AH Lawrence, who worked in bands from the 40s onwards – which seems to give him a very special rapport with the friends and musicians he interviewed for the project! Lawrence started working on the biography years before he actually penned it – contacting Ellington associates, and capturing their stories – which he weaves beautifully into the larger tale of the Duke. The book is very heavy on the early years of Ellington's career – and after the over 400 pages of biography, it also includes many appendices and indexes on the music and band members as well. Hardcover edition is 492 pages, with some black and white images. Book

✨✧ Tim LawrenceHold On to Your Dreams – Arthur Russell & The Downtown New York Music Scene 1973 to 1992 (hardcover) ... Book
Duke University Press, 2009. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really fantastic look at the late genius Arthur Russell – handled by dancefloor historian Tim Lawrence, who does a really great job of mixing Russell's more serious music inclinations with his surprising success in the clubs on the New York scene! The scope of the book is nicely wide – both in terms of history, and in culture – and Tim really gets at the way Russell was a unique force who was able to bridge worlds – maybe not as much of a surprise, given how open the scene was in the late 70s and 80s, when the world of New York was a great place to mix up styles and genres, and take things way past conventional expectations. Because of his previous work, Lawrence also has knowledge of so man other contemporaries of Russell – and does a great job of drawing lines and tracing relations, both personal and musical – all leading up to the tragic years when Arthur was taken from us all too soon. Book is 414 pages, very densely written, and has black and white images throughout. Book

✨✧ Sonny SharrockBlack Woman ... CD
Vortex/Atlantic (Japan), 1969. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the best ever (or perhaps the best) Sonny Sharrock albums, and probably the toughest to find. Recorded in New York, with Dave Burrell on piano, Milford Graves on drums, and wife Linda on voice. The tracks are nice and moody, without the craziness that sometimes bogs down his later work. Linda doesn't get in the way too much, either, and her voice is a perfect accompaniment to the dark sound of the session. Side one features the tracks "Black Woman" and "Peanut", and side two has the band joined by Teddy Daniel on trumpet, and playing the tracks "Bialero", "Blind Willy", and "Portrait Of Linda In Three Colors, All Black". ✨✧ Peter WattsAltered States – The Library Of Julio Santo Domingo (hardcover) ... Book
Anthology, 2017. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A deep dive into a really amazing collection – tens of thousands of books, a heck of a lot of records, plus posters, video tapes, and even some amazing Rolling Stones ephemera! All these pages feature objects and images from the huge collection of Julio Santo Domingo – the kinds of cool things that it would take most folks many lifetimes to track down – underground paperback books, drug texts, protest propaganda, mystical texts, and much much more – all laid out here in different chapters on different subjects – erotica, cocaine, LSD, Rolling Stones, heroin, and others – some of which are featured here in rare original documents from authors and artists, some from the farther reaches of the print underground. And even though this heavy, hardcover, full color volume is almost 500 oversized pages in length – it's just the tip of the iceberg of this amazing collection! Book

✨✧ CarsCandy-O (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Elektra/Rhino, 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
Not The Cars' first album, but the one that definitely catapulted them from Boston underground to mainstream fame – quite a surprise, given the style that most of the bigger acts were laying down at the time! And of course, we say that from the more mainstream bent of our American market – where punk had yet to penetrate the radio and other outlets – which made the new wave sounds of The Cars a surprisingly strong tilt in a more contemporary direction for both major labels and broadcast radio. All these many years later, the group's elevated to classic rock status, but that's only because of the strength of the songs – a classic lineup that includes "Let's Go", "Candy O", "Night Spots", "You Can't Hold On Too Long", "Got A Lot On My Head", "It's All I Can Do", and "Since I Held You". A great meeting of tenor sax talents old and young – as the up-and-coming John Coltrane plays alongside Paul "Vice Pres" Quinichette – in a classic Prestige session of well-blown saxophone work! The rhythm section on the album features Mal Waldron on piano, Julian Euell on bass, and Ed Thigpen on drums – but the real focus here is on the tenor giants in the title – working together in warm spirit that's surprisingly well matched! Titles include "Sunday", "Cattin", "Anatomy", and "Vodka". CD

Jazzy disco grooves from Henryk Debich and his long-running broadcast orchestra – a group who were well-schooled in jazz modes from years past, and were very able to soar with upbeat rhythms in the latter half of the 70s! The tunes here echo some of the best sound library modes of Western European labels of the time – core instrumentation on keyboards, saxes, and trumpets – augmented by larger arrangements that help the grooves come on with a nicely sweeping sort of vibe! Titles include a great take on the Komeda tune "Dwaj Ludzie Z Safa", with mighty nice Fender Rhodes – plus "Tylko Trzy Dni", "Nibeezpieczny Rajd" "Kama", "Wymarzona", and "Feeria". ✨✧ Brian DohertyDirty Pictures – How An Underground Network Of Nerds, Feminists, Misfits, Geniuses, Bikers, Potheads, Printers, Intellectuals & Art School Rebels Revolutionized Art & Invented Comix (hardcover) ... Book
Abrams, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the best books we've ever read on any sort of creative scene and cultural moment – a superbly-penned account of the rise of underground comix in the 60s, and the growth and changes of the movement in the decades that followed! Author Brian Doherty makes the scene come alive in ways that are even more powerful than most music books that try to do the same – tracing the disparate roots of key figures like Robert Crumb, Gilbert Shelton, Trina Robbins, and others – as they end up converging in San Francisco in the late 60s, finding a way to express themselves through new styles and new means of production and distribution – then spread out as the 70s move in, and underground comix provide the building blocks for the graphic novel generation to come. The book is insanely well-researched, but also written with a lively style that really gets at both the creative talents and individual personalities of each of the folks involved – all at a level that makes for a hell of a read that goes way past the usual book on comics, music, or any other sort of cultural creative scene! Powerhouse Books, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful black and white images from the East Harlem scene of the postwar years – material shot by New York photographer Leo Goldstein to partly document the new wave of Puerto Rican immigrants in the neighborhood, as maybe one of the first efforts to establish a Nuyorican sense of identity! The images are mostly portraits, with a few candids shot in the street – and given that the book is on Powerhouse, there's a nice resonance with some of that publisher's later volumes on early hip hop and other New York street photography. All images are in black and white, and the book is hardcover, and 158 pages. Book

BBE (UK), 2017. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Osunlade's always had a sound that's deep, but this time around his entire approach seems even deeper than ever – maybe because this lavish package is as much a visual treat as it is an audio one! The set's as much of a book as it is a record – a heavy, hardcover package that has beautiful images on each page, writings too – all in tribute to the Orishas who've become a continuing inspiration for Osunlade – and helped move his music away from just simple dancefloor fare! And yet the tracks groove nicely, too – all in that deepest of house modes that the man's been giving us for many years – woven from strands of different cultural inspiration, and given a contemporary soulful spin – mostly from Osunlade himself on live drums, moog, Fender Rhodes, theremin, and other instrumentation – as well as vocals, and some guest help from Gabriele Poso, Oveous Maximus, Chateau Flight, and Tanya Blount. Titles include "No Way", "Pheramones", "Ser Al Santismo", "A Day Without", "Yeku Yeku", "Man O Wirdz", "Trinity Ov Me", "Idiosyncracy", and "Walkin In Paris". LP, Vinyl record album

Resonance, 1981. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Okonkole Y Trompa", "Three Views Of A Secret", "Invitation", "Soul Intro/The Chicken", "Twins", "Bass & Drum Improvisation", "Reza/Giant Steps", and "Mr Fonebone". CD

✨✧ Gil Scott-HeronNew Black Poet – Small Talk At 125th & Lenox ... CD
Flying Dutchman/BGP, 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
CD

✨✧ Sonny StittLegends Of Acid Jazz – Turn It On/Black Vibrations ... CD
Prestige, 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 classic Stitt albums back to back – Turn It On and Black Vibrations, both recorded during his early 70s funk years at Prestige! Turn It On is very firmly the funky Prestige sound of the early 70s – complete with Idris Muhammad on drums, organ by Leon Spencer, guitar by Melvin Sparks, and trumpet by Virgil Jones. After years of noodling around on the Varitone, never quite hitting his right moment, Stitt breaks out nicely in the company of these hot young funky players. The record's got a few mellow moments that point towards his older ballad style, but the funky numbers are the best. Titles include "Turn It On", "The BBQ Man", and "Miss Riverside". On Black Vibrations, Sonny Stitt joins up with a tight group of prime Prestige funky players – like Idris Muhammad, Leon Spencer, Melvin Sparks, and Virgil Jones – for a sound that's much funkier than some of his other records for the label. The set's got a good set of modern funk tracks, with all the quality moments you'd expect from these top-notch players. Titles include "Goin' To DC", "Calling Card", "Them Funky Changes", and "Black Vibrations". CD

Here's a book that will blow your mind – and your ears as well – a richly detailed look at the way that sound has been used as a weapon – both as a direct force of sonic power, and as a more subtle means of disturbing space and human activity! The writer is as direct as the title, which is great – because the book is a no-punches-pulled look at the way that sound can really be used to screw things up – with a look at certain frequencies, tones, and modes of employment – some done in secret, others more overt – by those who seek to turn one of our key senses against us. The book is a well-crafted blend of history, science, and theory – with notes on the contents – and this hardcover version is 197 pages in length. Book

Elektra/Rhino, 1982. Used ... Out Of Stock
A key part of the initial tremendous legacy of X – one of the greatest run of records that any group could ever hope for! This third set has the group honing and refining their sound even more – losing none of their roots in the LA hardcore scene, but also inflecting their sound with a complexity that none of their previous scenemates could match – a sense of musicianship that was never too polished, but always razor sharp – at a level that brought even more righteous power to their lyrics and completely unique songplay. The quartet are one of the greatest ever in rock and roll – and this album's a classic that transcends time and style – essential listening on a shortlist of the best guitar-based sounds of the late 20th century. Titles include "The Hungry Wolf", "Riding With Mary", "Under The Big Black Sun", "Blue Spark", "Because I Do", and "Motel Room In My Bed". 5 bonus tracks including "Breathless (single mix)", "Riding With Mary (single version)", "X Rewrites El Paso (rehearsha)/Because I Do (TV mix/inst)", "Universal Corner (live)" and "How I (Learned My Lesson) (live)", for a total of 16 songs in all CD
