Abba GargandoAbba Gargando – Low-Fi Tuareg Guitar From Renowned Timbouctou Musician ... LP
Sahel Sounds, 2014. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
The title certainly gets the "low-fi" right – given that most of these tracks were originally recorded on cellphones – but the sound of the performance more than breaks through any sonic barriers the method might impose! In fact, there's a compressed quality to the recordings that seems to almost emphasize the guitar skills of Abba Garbando even more – as his deft fingers create these amazing patterns of sound, at a level that has some familiar Tuareg elements, but which is maybe even more powerful and personal in this setting. The sound is surprisingly rich throughout – and titles include "Talimest", "Inor In Tadalat", "Tarha Lamon Ines", "Majrad Iyan", "Amidinin", and "Zinizjimogh Dim". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited to 500 copies, please note that the LP jacket has a slight creased corner, nothing major.)

✨✧ Captain BeefheartSafe As Milk ... LP
Buddah, 1967. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Mindblowing music from Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band – a record that's got plenty of garagey grit at the core, but which also has a heady freak rock vibe overall! The 1967 album really captures this perfect moment – one when so many artists like Don Van Vliet had their feet in older rockish modes, but were really tripping out with new ideas – able to get nice and freaky in the course of a short tune, yet still never lose a groove that really helped send the music home! In other words, there's nothing too hippieish about the record, and nothing that's ever too self-indulgent – yet the blend of organ, guitar, and drums is completely mindblowing – and as revolutionary today as it was back then. Titles include "Abba Zabba", "Dropout Boogie", "Zig Zag Wanderer", "Electricity", "Yellow Brick Road", "Grown So Ugly", and "Autumn's Child". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousSun Shines At Night – Giorgio Moroder In Finnish 1972 to 1989 ... LP
Svart (Finland), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The title's a bit misleading, as Giorgio Moroder didn't actually spend time on the Finnish scene – but the German superproducer had a huge influence on that nation's grooves during the 70s and early 80s – as you'll hear on this wonderfully weird and well-collected set! These are all cuts we never would have discovered otherwise, and they come together beautifully – starting out with a mix of compressed mid 70s pop with lots of sweet electric touches – then moving into some clubbier material that shows just how strong the Moroder influence was on the dancefloor scene! Given the change of language, and the catchiness of the tunes, there's also maybe a bit of an Abba vibe going on at points – and we mean that only in the best, most complimentary way possible. Most numbers are remakes of Moroder penned or produced hits, with vocals in Finnish – and titles include "Mika Fillis" by Mona Carita, "Lady Lady Lady" by Markku Aro, "Pista Valot Pois" by Eini, "Muuttukoon Maailma Taa" by Danny, "On Siita Aikaa" by Koivistolaiset, "Ohari" by Virve Rosti", "Luotan Rakkauteen" by Seija Simola, "Kay Mun Vierellain" by Tauski Peltonen & Meiju Suvas, and "Soita Mulle" by Mona Carita. Nems, 1976. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
A killer collection of the early greatness of prime era Sabbath – great tracks from the first handful of albums of the Ozzy years! If there's a problem with We Sold Our Souls For Rock & Roll, it's that there was too much greatness on the early albums for them to put compilation out that could make everyone happy – but you get "Paranoid", "War Pigs", "Iron Man", "Fairies Wear Boots", "Sweet Leaf", "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath", "Snow Blind", "NIB". "The Wizard" and more. 17 tracks on 2LPs. LP, Vinyl record album

Grapefruit/CBS (UK), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. New Copy 6CD ... $42.99 49.99
Really heady work from Black Widow – the legendary UK prog group, and not the countless other artists who've also recorded under the same name! Black Widow were one of a handful of groups who took the horror rock modes of the early 60s and pushed them into territory that was much more terrifying – using hard rock impulses and wiggier instrumental modes to underscore the satanic and supernatural themes in their music! It's maybe no surprised that the group were managed by the same team who handled Black Sabbath – but you'll find music here that's much more sonically complex, especially over the huge range of records included in the package – a box that features their initial incarnation as Pesky Gee on the album Exclamation Mark, an early demo album, and the studio records Sacrifice, Black Widow, and Black Widow III – plus the Black Widow IV album, which was never issued back in the 70s. There's also rare tracks, demos, and even live material – making for a 68 track set that's also got a 40 page booklet of notes. CD

Jazz SabbathJazz Sabbath – The 1968 Tapes ... CD
Blacklake (Netherlands), 2024. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
The last album in the trilogy of Jazz Sabbath records – albums that are all put together with a bit of a gimmick, but which stand more than strongly enough on their own! As with the other two, this set purports to be lost material from the late 60s – jazz covers of Black Sabbath tunes – but as a whole, they're really just great jazz numbers – performed by a trio led by keyboardist Milton Keanes on piano, moog, and Fender Rhodes – with additional work on trumpet, tenor, guitar, and Hammond, depending on the tracks. There's a groovy vibe to the set, more than enough to evoke the sound of the UK in the late 60s – although the production and presentation are definitely more contemporary – and titles include "War Pigs", "Supernaut", "Warning", "The Wizard", "Into The Void", "Electric Funeral", and "Spiral Architect". Warner/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 6 CDs ... $34.99 39.99
A massive package of funky music – and maybe one that no home should be without – as the set includes all the classic Josie Records and Warner Brothers albums by legendary New Orleans funk group The Meters – plus a fair bit of bonus tracks too! The Josie albums are incredible – a lean, powerful blend of funky drums, bass, guitar, and organ – almost the New Orleans answer to Booker T & The MGs, but with a sound that's far funkier overall – and which continues to bring new ears to the magic of The Meters as the years go by! Their Warner work is a bit fuller – as the group were part of a big wave of Nola talent to get the nod from LA – which means that The Meters were able to add in vocals, experiment with arrangements, use additional instrumentation – yet all without ever losing that core groove that made them so great! This package is the first time all the records have been brought together, and many are presented here in the "expanded edition" versions with bonus tracks – which makes for a whopping 116 titles on 6CDs – bonus tracks, plus the full albums The Meters, Look Ka Py Py, Struttin, Cabbage Alley, Rejuvenation, Fire On The Bayou, Trick Bag, and New Directions – plus some singles too! Two fairly extreme pieces by Nono which both mix voices and electronics. "Como Una" features a soprano and piano, and has a fairly heavy clunky sound. We're partial to "Yentonces Comprendio", which mixes multiple sopranos and tape, to create a haunting wispy sound with the feel of a lost David Lynch soundtrack. LP, Vinyl record album

Warner, 1970. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Huge, dark, and heavy – an album of mythical proportions, and that's a lot to say for a mainstream album – especially one that crossed over as big as this one! It would be hard to imagine the modern rock landscape without this album or group, who provided the template for so much music to follow – and the soundtrack to many bong-fueled excursions to the dark side – a huge legacy in sound, but one that may well still be best begun on this landmark self-titled album! Timeless metal from Black Sabbath and their first album with Ronnie James Dio out front – and we'd honestly put it up there with the best work of all their careers! No disrespect to Ozzy or the early, definitive era of Black Sabbath – those first few album are among the most influential rock & roll albums of all time and Heaven & Hell doesn't reinvent the wheel – but this new phase with another veteran front man is a masterclass heavy riffs, soaring vocals and hasn't aged a day. ✨✧ Black SabbathNever Say Die ... LP
Warner, 1978. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked gem from the initial run of Black Sabbath – the last album to feature Ozzy Osborne on vocals, and a set that really hones the group's power of the previous years! You might expect a more commercial outing from the cover – or maybe think that these guys were trying on some newer waves at the end of the 70s – but honestly, the guitars are as sharp as ever, Ozzy's vocals are nice and fierce, and there's a cool, compressed vibe that really shows these guys influencing a new generation with their music. The bass is maybe not as heavy as before, but that seems to be the only point of power missing from the pentagram – on titles that include "Never Say Die", "Junior's Eyes", "Johnny Blade", "Shock Wave", "Air Dance", "Swinging The Chain", and "Breakout". A pivotal album for Black Sabbath – a set that further expanded the instrumental palette of their previous work, but all without losing an edge at all – for a record that forever helped cement their role in both the classic and hard rock canons of the 70s! Ozzy is great throughout, and both he and Tony Iommi bring in a bit of keyboard work, but in just the right way – almost adding a more sinister edge to the guitars – echoed by some especially nice acoustic piano at times, particularly on the instrumental cut "Fluff". Titles include the seminal title track "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" – plus "A National Acrobat", "Sabbra Cadabra", "Spiral Architect", "Looking For Today", and "Killing Yourself To Live". LP, Vinyl record album

The album's got quite a different feel than the rest of the duo's work – as their standard Brit pop style is augmented by lots of extra strings and woodwinds, super-baroque in a beautiful post-Pet Sounds sort of way. The songs are wonderful, too – with themes on the rise and fall of modern life, very much in a Kinks sort of style – with titles like "Busman's Holiday", "Rest In Peace", "Family Way", "Can I See You", and the extended "Progress Suite". Geodesic, 1981. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Rare sounds from the Detroit underground – a previously-unissued 1981 performance by a trio that features Douglas Ewart on reeds, Spencer Barefield on guitars, and Tani Tabbal on percussion – plus all artists on a host of other instruments as well! The tracks are very long and open-ended – very much in an AACM tradition of creative exploration between the players – not entirely without structure, but very free overall – which makes for some wonderful spontaneity that really keeps things on edge! Ewart plays alto sax, bass clarinet, flute, and a range of other global instruments – including "bass transverse flute", didjeridoo, and shakuhachi – and Barefield plays his familiar electric guitar, but also handles bowed guitar, 12 string, and even African harp! The blend of instruments and sounds is amazing – quite warm overall, even when pushing the boundaries – and titles include "Dreams Of Shamans Shango Flies", "Mirror World Suite", "Red Hills", and "Trio For Bassoon, Guitar, & Percussion". Titles include "Black Sabbath", "The Wizard", "Behind The Wall Of Sleep", "NIB", "Wicked World", and "Warning". CD

The fourth nearly flawless album of heavy genius from Black Sabbath – featuring some of the mightiest rock riffs ever! The fuzz is definitely turned up to 11, the rhythms move at a breakneck speed, and Ozzy's vocals have all the mean, sinister sounds that set a generation on fire – plenty of energy to fill up long tracks that include "Megalomania", "Hole In The Sky", "Symptom Of The Universe", "Supertzar", "Am I Going Insane", and "The Writ". Blacklake (Netherlands), 2024. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A very cool sitar album – one that's sometimes funky, in the territory of work by Ananda Shankhar, but which also has a vibe that's very much its own too – almost as if Abbass Mehrpouya decided to give a nod back to the psychedelic 60s generation that was already being strongly influenced by work from India! Abbass hails from Iran, not India, though – and that difference perhaps accounts for the really special spirit of the record – as the whole thing is a larger palette of sounds and colors – still with plenty of sitar work, but other instrumentation too – and even some vocal passages that are extremely haunting. A really cool cooker from The Meters – recorded during their post-Josie run for Warner Brothers, but with this tight vibe that still holds all their funky New Orleans roots intact! The sound is a bit more expanded here – not in a commercial way, but just in a style that has the group trying out more things – some interesting rhythms, offbeat guitar passages, and maybe even more of a vocal presence – although it's clearly the drums and basslines that are still driving the whole thing along! Production is by Allen Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn – again in that great style they were hitting at Warner – and titles include "Soul Island", "Flower Song", "Gettin Funkier All the Time", "Do the Dirt", "Cabbage Alley", and "Stay Away" – plus a version of Neil Young's "Birds"! Grooves unlike anything else you've ever heard in your life – an assortment of mid 70s tunes from Mahmoud Ahmed, the second grooviest Ethiopian artist, next to Mulatu! Ahmed's sound is a lot more out there than Mulatu's – less funky and jazz-based, and more in the mode of snakey rhythms, complicated guitar parts, and vocals that have a melancholy quality that's simply amazing. Barefoot JerryWatchin TV/You Can't Get Off With Your Shoes On ... CD
Monument/Floating World (UK), 1974/1975. New Copy ... $10.99 16.99
A pair of excellent records from the sometimes-overlooked Barefoot Jerry – back to back on a single CD! First up is Watchin TV With The Radio On – funky southern rock from Barefoot Jerry – a group who've got all the same guitar chops as some of their contemporaries, but who also really know how to kick things up on the drums – which really gives the music a great groove! There's a nice mix of acoustic, electric, and steel guitar work on the album – plus a bit of keyboards and some nicely kicking basslines that also emphasize the funkier currents on the record, especially on some of the instrumentals – all in ways that definitely make Barefoot Jerry one of the most unique groups on their scene! Titles include "Funny Lookin Eyes", "Pig Snoots & Nehi Red", "Hay Queen", "Two Mile Pike", "There Must Be A Better Way", and "Mother Nature's Way Of Saying High". Next up is You Can't Get Off With Your Shoes On – another gem from the group! Barefoot Jerry are one of the great overlooked southern rock groups of the 70s – not as brash and ballsy as some of the arena-filling acts of the period, but equally sharp in terms of their instrumentation – which not only includes great electric guitar lines, but also sweet keyboards, steel guitar, dobro, and even a bit of harmonica! The group know how to groove in a way that sometimes makes them feel like Area Code 615 – and at other times they focus more on tuneful lyrics – trading modes back and forth in ways that make for a mighty rich record overall! Titles include "Ali Babba", "West Side Of Mississippi", "Slowin Down", "Hero Frodo", "Sinkin In The Sea", "Cades Coves", and "The Measure Of Your Worth". CD

Trad Vibe (France), 1975. New Copy ... $30.99 32.99
A legendary bit of funky fusion from the French scene of the 70s – the standout set from Cortex, a combo who's very heavy on the keyboards! The tunes have a feel that's quite different than American electric work of the time – funky, but also a bit breezy too – with a strong Brazilian influence in some of the rhythms, and hip use of female vocals alongside the Fender Rhodes – which makes for a double layer of sound that's totally great! There's a bit of alto sax in the instrumentation, but most of the sound comes from the interplay between keyboards, voice, bass, and drums – rolling along in a sound that's stunningly soulful, and which makes the record one of the hippest European dates from the decade. Tremendous all the way through – with tracks that include "Automne", "L'Enfant Samba", "La Rue", "Go Round", "Madbass", "Sabbat", "Mary Et Jeff", and "Chanson D'Un Jour D'Hiver". Mercury, Early 70s. Very Good Gatefold ... $49.99
An insane record – and one of the strangest moments in pop music during the early 70s! Coven are best known to most folks for cutting the message-oriented, sweet folk tune "One Tin Soldier" – but here, they change course completely – and offer up a whole album dedicated to the dark arts and satanic pursuits – with a sonic quality that actually beats just about anything ever recorded by Anton La Vey! The record is ostensibly an "anti-witchcraft" album – but it actually comes off as being totally sincere – in a really great way. Some tunes are song-based – like "Coven In Charing Cross", "Black Sabbath", and "Choke Thirst Die" – but the album also has this really long "Satanic Mass", which even features the Lord's Prayer spoken backwards – completely creepy, in a Kenneth Anger magick sort of way! King, 1950s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Early King Records material by Champion Jack Dupree – a hell of a pianist, and a heck of a great singer too – working almost as a raconteur on some of the best songs on this collection! The music has deep roots in New Orleans, where Jack must have really honed his piano skills – but there's also a more northern, more urban presentation of the music on these cuts – a strong current of wit that comes in the way that Jack puts over a tune, and a great mix of jazzy phrasing in both his piano and the electric guitar that sometimes provides strong accompaniment. Jack's vocals are almost more commentary than traditional lyrics – often with an undercurrent of raunch – and titles include "That's My Pa", "Failing Health Blues", "Big Leg Emma's", "Two Below Zero", "Camille", "Me & My Mule", "She Cooks Me Cabbage", and "Silent Partner". Hard riffing from Scotland's Iron Claw – a group who owe plenty to the best early work of Black Sabbath, but also take off nicely in their own direction as well! The guitar work is frenetic, the bass nice and fuzzy, and there's a sense of darkness that really comes through in the vocals too – a sinister groove that was years ahead of its time, and never got full exposure back in the 70s. ECM (Germany), 2017. Used 2 CDs ... $17.99
A fantastic program of live recordings – all captured at the Museum Of Contemporary Art in Chicago – as part of their 50th Anniversary tribute to the AACM! Roscoe Mitchell works here in a very unusual format – with four different trios, each heard separately – then grouped together in different ways on larger recordings that feature all members in varied formation! The trios feature James Fei on reeds and electronics with William Winant on percussion and vibes; Hugh Ragin on trumpet withTyshawn Sorey on trombone, piano, and percussion; Craig Taborn on piano, organ, and electronics with Kikanju Baku on drums and percussion; and Jribu Shahid on bass and percussion with Tani Tabball on drums and percussion. Mitchell plays a range of reeds and percussion – and some of the percussion used is from the collection of various Art Ensemble Members, being exhibited by the museum. The performances are great – and not only is Mitchell still at the height of his improvisational powers, but he's also got the other musicians working in a spirit that really lives up to the tradition of the AACM! Black Saint (Italy), 1981. Used ... $9.99
A key session as a leader from Roscoe Mitchell – one of his greatest moments on record from this period, and a set that shows a different side of his talents than heard with the Art Ensemble! At one level, the group here are very much concerned with the sound textures and shapes that Mitchell first explored in his early years – and continued to present on solo works. But at another level, there's a more rhythmic feel to some of these numbers as well – that unifying of roots that showed up strongly in the second generation work of the AACM – almost a pan-historic sense of reference, knitted alongside a more spacious approach to improvisation. The group here includes Spencer Barefield on guitar, Jaribu Shahid on bass, Tani Tabbal on percussion, and Hugh Ragin on trumpet – and tittles include "Cut Outs For Quintet", "Jo Jar", and "Variations On A Folk Song Written In the 60s". A really wonderful album by Roscoe Mitchell and his semi-electric "sound ensemble" – a group that's as devoted to the exploration of sonic space as they are the expression of improvised jazz. The work's got a wonderfully fragile quality – like some of the best Mitchell work of the type – and the album shifts between very spare and floating tracks, and other numbers that have a more full-on jazz-based sound. Rogue Art (France), 2005. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Really dark work from the later years of Roscoe Mitchell – a session that has Mitchell's reeds set up beautifully with a few players from a younger generation in jazz! At some points, the record has the personal, introspective qualities you might hear in Mitchell's solo work – almost brooding with its own quiet fire – but at other points, the record pushes off more strongly with the united energy of the group – using horn formations that are complicated, yet still always with a sense of swing – a lot more personal than some of Mitchell's too-serious work in the compositional realm. Players include Corey Wilkes on trumpet and flugelhorn, Craig Taborn on piano, Jaribu Shahid on bass, and Tani Tabbal on drums and percussion – and titles include "Quintet One", "For Cynthia", "March 2004", "In Six", "Turn", "Take One", "After", "That's Finished", and "Horner Mac". Capitol, 1967. Very Good ... $16.99
Peter & Gordon get a lot groovier for this sweet 60s set for Capitol – not just in the style of the music, which shows more influences from psych production – but also in the lyrics as well – many of which are penned by one or the other of the pair! The new material is great – a nice change from before, and filled with lots of sing-songy elements that mix perfectly with the pop psych touches in the arrangements – which are aided greatly by some work from Mike Vickers. The shift is a lot like the one made by Chad & Jeremy when they wanted to trip out a bit more in their Cabbages & Kings period – although maybe not as heady overall. Roctober, 2023. New Copy ... $6.99
A very cool double-sized issue of Roctober – long-overdue, as we haven't heard from them in a bit – but well worth the wait, as the range of features and mix of material continues to be stunning – a great reminder that, decades back, this magazine was exploring this territory long before newer publications like Maggot Brain and some of its contemporaries! There's way too much to mention in great detail – but we can tell you you'll find interviews with Mavis Staples, Mike Love, Air Supply, Wanda Jackson, Sarah Dash, and Prince – and that's just in the first few pages. Other features include articles on Yoko Ono, Muzak, Kid Stuff Records, Mick Clintrock, obscure Weird Al songs, rare Maison Soul singles, the secret Sex History Of The Cabbage Patch Kids, Roky Erikson, Question Mark, and a host of reviews, obits, and lots lots more! ZiorZior (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Philips/Big Pink (South Korea), 1971. New Copy ... $18.99 24.99
The self-titled classic by a wonderfully spooky band – a group who work in the most sinister side of the hard rock mode at the start of the 70s, all with a very heady sound that have made them legends over the years – even though this debut never got much circulation at the time! In a way, these guys could easily go head to head with early Black Sabbath at most points – but they also have a way of changing things up, varying the mood in really great ways that make the most of the lead vocals of Keith Bonsor – a singer whose sensitivity is underscored by great work on organ and flute at points too – which temper the fiercer guitar work of John Truba and create a lot of depth in the record. Titles include "New Land", "Now I'm Sad", "Quabala", "I Was Fooling", "Love's Desire", "Give Me Love", "Rolling Thunder", and "Before My Eyes Go Blind". CD features lots of bonus tracks – 8 more tunes that include "Every Inch A Man", "Entrance Of The Devil", "Cat's Eyes", "Dudi Judy", "Evolution", and "Angel Of The Highway". CD
