✨✧ Little BrotherMinstrel Show (Amended Album) ... LP
Atlantic/ABB, 2005. Near Mint- 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Little Brother transitions to the majors with their soulful underground sound intact – and deliver an effort that in the best moments improve upon the already classic Listening LP! It looks like this just isn't going to go over with the TRL crowd, despite the Atlantic logo. The soul sample vibe in general has seeped back onto the pop charts thanks to Kanye, but the prolific 9th Wonder's brand is of a much grittier stock, providing a rock solid, emotional soul foil for the rhymes of Phonte and Big Pooh. Honestly, as ubiquitous as 9th's production presence continues to be, there's still really no one else out there like Little Brother – which is another reason to celebrate. Like the golden era work by the prime movers of the Native Tongues, the Wu, and Organized Noize collectives, LB's sound is an instantly identifiable, singular signature that you just can't bite. Don't expect to hear a better full length hip hop album on a major label in '05. Tracks include an intro & outro feat Yahzarah, "Beautiful Morning", "The Becoming", "Not Enough", "Slow It Down" and "All For You" feat Darien Brockington, "Cheatin'", "Lovin It" feat Joe Scudda, "Watch Me", "Sincerely Yours", "Still Lives Through", "We Got Now" feat Chaundon and more! ✨✧ Peven EverettStudio Confessions ... CD
ABB/Studio Confession, 2002. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first full and official album from Peven Everett – a professional release that pulls together the strands from his underground, self-released albums of the past few years! After knocking around as a young up and comer on the east coast scene, Peven went underground in Chicago a while back, and only issued titles in handmade format, on CD-R releases with little or no artwork. This album's the first one that he's issued with professional packaging, formatting, and recording quality – and it's the culmination of a number of years of woodshedding in the studio. The set's great – and builds off of tracks that Peven recorded for his previous self-issued Speed Of Light CD, plus new tracks – all produced and presented to perfection, in a setting that's sure to rise Peven's star as much as we've been hoping. The whole thing's wonderful – smooth, soulful, and classic – in a mode that we haven't heard since D'Angelo or Omar first came onto the scene. Titles include "World Love", "Everyday Girl", "They So Cold", "I Can Give It", "Sankofa", "Say It Back", and "I Wanna Make Love". CD

Ashbury Stabbins Duo (Roy Ashbury/Larry Stabbins)Fire Without Bricks ... CD
Bead/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1977. New Copy ... $12.99 15.00
An overlooked gem from the British free jazz scene of the 70s – a set issued on the Bead Records label, and one that got very little circulation at the time – but which is equally as mindblowing as work from the period on labels like Ictus and Ogun! The duo here features Roy Ashbury on drums and percussion, and Larry Stabbins on soprano and tenor – working in this free, open space, but on tracks that are often shorter than album-length improvisations – which allows the players to stop a minute, take a breath, and move into these nicely varied moments of spontaneous creation! You might know Stabbins from later 80s work on more groove-oriented records – but here, he's a tremendousimproviser, with a sense for creative reedwork that might well rival his contemporary Evan Parker. Titles include "Puff", "Formants Of The Deep", "Wych Elm", "Fire Without Bricks", "Rough Cut", and "Maldoror". CD

Black Monk (Austria), 1982. New Copy ... $18.99
Two players we don't really know at all, but coming together here in a sublime set of reed-based creations – Alaeddin Adlernest on bassoon and Haru Ghulam Barrabas on alto sax – four long tunes that each have some sort of structure, but also balance things nicely with a sense of freedom – a bit like some of the looser that Jimmy Giuffre or Lee Konitz were making during the 60s and 70s! Given the use of bassoon, there's almost some echoes of the Arkestra here – or the sparer moments that the Arkestra might feature on a solo – and Barabbas has some very unusual phrasing on alto sax, too – which comes across wonderfully here next to the less-conventional horn. Really beautiful throughout – with titles that include "Einstein", "Smile", "Al Bab", and "Music Navigation". CD

Pure brilliance from start to finish – especially the second side of the record, which has a continuous run of tunes that's very unique – and still completely sublime all these many years later! The album shows the fracturing ideas of the group, but crafted together with a unity you won't find on The White Album or Let It Be – still a way of making it all gel together beautifully, as the fab four stretch their wings to find new ways of being. Added instrumentation is used wonderfully – never overdone, but with orchestral passages that can really hammer home the best musical moments – and titles include "I Want You", "Because", "You Never Give Me Your Money", "Golden Slumbers", "The End", "Her Majesty", "Polythene Pam", and "Sun King". George BensonOther Side Of Abbey Road ... LP
CTI/Friday Music, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $34.99 35.99
A wonderfully wicked album – one that sold so many copies that it's sometimes hard to remember how great it is! George takes on all of Abbey Road – or just about all of it – as he runs through some of the most beautiful tracks The Beatles ever wrote, like "Golden Slumbers", "I Want You (She's So Heavy)", "The End", "Because", and "You Never Give Me Your Money". The whole thing's set to some great baroque jazzy arrangements by Don Sebesky, and George digs the whole thing so much that he even sings a bit – vocalizing in a cool chromatic way that really works well with his guitar playing, and which would soon transform into a very popular style on his records of the 70s. Keyboards are by Bob James and Herbie Hancock – and there's plenty of other great jazz players in the mix! LP, Vinyl record album

One of the moodiest sessions on CTI from the early days – and a landmark album that took George Benson from the funky jazz scene into the upper reaches of 70s jazz. ICP OrchestraBospaadje Konijnehol I (Forest Path Rabbithole I) ... CD
ICP (Netherlands), 1992. New Copy ... $19.99 24.99
There's a beautiful assemblage of players here – all working under that special Instant Composers banner that seems to create a special sort of magic – shifting sounds as the different players come together under the leadership of pianist Misha Mengelberg, who also structured most of the loose compositions that are used as the basis for free improvisation, or "instant composing" as the group states with their name! Players include Han Bennink on percussion, Ab Baars and Michael Moore on reeds, George Lewis and Wolter Wierbos on trombones, Erns Clerum on bass, Evert Hekkema on trumpet, Ernst Reijseger on cello, Maartje Ten Hoorn on violin, and Maurice Horsthuis on viola – all working together in all these wonderful ways, as inventive as any of the best music you'd hear from Mengelberg or Bennink in other settings. The set features two long, loosely-structured suites – Mengelberg's "De Purperen Sofa", and "Ellington Mix" – which features extrapolations of Ellington themes greatly changed up by Misha. CD

Cinedelic (Italy), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $38.99
A beautiful set of free-flowing work from Italian pianist Enrico Intra – a set that takes up the space of the entire record, yet maintains a sense of structure and mission throughout! There are freer passages in the work, but the set isn't completely free jazz overall – as Intra has a way of pacing things out and using some more spacious piano lines to bring everyone else into periods of regrouping – masterfully directing a quintet that includes Sergio Fanni on trumpet, Giancarlo Barigozzi on tenor and flute, Carlo Milano on bass, and Carlo Sola on drums! The scope of the work is wonderful, and the whole thing may well be one of the most striking albums we've ever heard from Intra – and that's saying a lot, given his other work. LP, Vinyl record album

Jazz SabbathJazz Sabbath ... LP
Black Lake (Netherlands), 2020. New Copy ... $28.99
A really great record, and one that's even better than its gimmick – even though that gimmick is pretty darn great! The group pretends to be a British jazz combo from 1970, and works their way through a host of Black Sabbath tunes from the time – but rather than a straighter reworking of the music, like the recent Brown Sabbath record, this set truly takes off in the best sort of jazz-based sensibility – only using the tunes in a loose way, and bringing us some fantastic jazz performances in the process! The group's led by pianist Milton Keanes, who also produced the record – and the core trio features Jacque T'Fono on bass and Juan Take on drums – wonderful musicians who have a great fluid sensibility together, and who completely transform the music – so much so, you'll find yourself not really caring about the source of the songs, and actually waiting eagerly for the group to start writing their own material. There's guitar guests on a few tracks, plus a bit of guest Hammond and tenor too – on titles that include "Iron Man", "Children Of The Grave", "Changes", "Hand Of Doom", "Rat Salad", "Evil Woman", and "Fairies Wear Boots". A short-lived group, but a great one too – a quartet that features post-Free work from guitarist Paul Kossof and drummer Simon Kirke – each of whom sing a bit too! But the real strength of the album comes from the wicked keyboard work of John Rabbit Bundrick – who also sings a bit of lead, but really cooks strongly on Hammond, Fender Rhodes, and mellotron too – all with the right sort of riffs to match the guitar. Riverside, 1959. Very Good+ ... $24.99
Key early work by Abbey – no so much the "blue" album you'd guess from the title, but a session that's filled with the kind of anger and emotion that makes us love her so much when she's this good! The group here is very hip – an ensemble brought to the date by her then-partner Max Roach – with Max on drums, Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, Stanley Turrentine on tenor, and Julian Preister on trombone – all working with Abbey in a mode that's quite similar to her best appearances on Roach records from the same stretch! Titles include her amazing early version of "Afro Blue", plus "Lonely House", "Come Sunday", "Let Up", and a great version of Oscar Brown, Jr's "Brother Where Are You?" LP, Vinyl record album

Warner/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 6 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
A massive package of funky music – and maybe one that no home should be without – as the set includes all the classic Josie Records and Warner Brothers albums by legendary New Orleans funk group The Meters – plus a fair bit of bonus tracks too! The Josie albums are incredible – a lean, powerful blend of funky drums, bass, guitar, and organ – almost the New Orleans answer to Booker T & The MGs, but with a sound that's far funkier overall – and which continues to bring new ears to the magic of The Meters as the years go by! Their Warner work is a bit fuller – as the group were part of a big wave of Nola talent to get the nod from LA – which means that The Meters were able to add in vocals, experiment with arrangements, use additional instrumentation – yet all without ever losing that core groove that made them so great! This package is the first time all the records have been brought together, and many are presented here in the "expanded edition" versions with bonus tracks – which makes for a whopping 116 titles on 6CDs – bonus tracks, plus the full albums The Meters, Look Ka Py Py, Struttin, Cabbage Alley, Rejuvenation, Fire On The Bayou, Trick Bag, and New Directions – plus some singles too! After years of bumping around on a variety of labels, and in a variety of styles, the group really exploded with this wonderful set – an album that has them soaring along in the righteous Philly groove of the early 70s – a sound that turned out to be a perfect foil for the trio's sublime, yet earthy harmonies. Arrangements are by some fo the best of the core Philly scene – Thom Bell, Norman Harris, Ronnie Baker, and Bobby Martin – and the album's overflowing with great tunes that completely redefine the sound of group soul in the 70s! One of the funkiest Mexican groups at the end of the 60s – a hard-hitting combo who could almost go head to head with any American ensemble of the funky 45 generation! Rabbits & Carrots work in a mostly-instrumental mode here – a style that has just a slight element of Latin in the rhythms, but which is much more influenced by American soul, funk, and rock of the late 60s – carried off with instrumentation that includes gritty guitars, bubbling organs, and stabbing horns – all ultra-sharp, and recorded with enough of an edge to cut into a brick! The package is a tremendous musical discovery to our ears – and is a long-overdue exposure of this great group to the rest of the world at large. Tintern AbbeyBeeside – The Complete Recordings ... CD
Decca/Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
A much-needed collection of work from Tintern Abbey – a group who recorded one famous psych single for the Deram label in 1967 – then seemingly disappeared from the scene before giving the world any sort of a full album! This set corrects that mistake, and then some – as it brings together a total of 36 tracks recorded by the group, including material designed for a follow-up, and lots of other gems that appear here for the first time ever – a really magnificent batch of music that may well have you putting Tintern Abbey right up there next to some of your favorite late 60s London psychedelic acts! They're not entirely Pink Floyd, but they've got more than enough chops to match the rest of the best of that heady late 60s moment – freaky fuzzy guitar when needed, a great sense of presentation and production, and a really dark sensibility with both the lyrics, and the way they are phrased – which makes even some of the demo tracks come across beautifully. Titles include the single "Beeside" and "Vacuum Cleaner" – plus cuts that include "My Zoo", "Magic Horseman", "Naked Song", "Snowman", "Strange Dame", "Let The Wind Blow", "Stickleback", "Life Goes By", "My Prayer", "Tanya", "Black Jack", and "Bodmin Blow". ✨✧ George BensonWhite Rabbit (2nd cover) ... LP
CTI, 1971. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the moodiest sessions on CTI from the early days – and a landmark album that took George Benson from the funky jazz scene into the upper reaches of 70s jazz. The record was put together by Don Sebesky, and it's a lot more high concept than some of George's earlier work – and proof that he was a totally great player who just needed a push in the right direction to find his own vibe. Other players include Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, and Airto – and titles include "California Dreaming", "El Mar", "White Rabbit", and "Little Train". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Black SabbathNever Say Die ... LP
Warner, 1978. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An overlooked gem from the initial run of Black Sabbath – the last album to feature Ozzy Osborne on vocals, and a set that really hones the group's power of the previous years! You might expect a more commercial outing from the cover – or maybe think that these guys were trying on some newer waves at the end of the 70s – but honestly, the guitars are as sharp as ever, Ozzy's vocals are nice and fierce, and there's a cool, compressed vibe that really shows these guys influencing a new generation with their music. The bass is maybe not as heavy as before, but that seems to be the only point of power missing from the pentagram – on titles that include "Never Say Die", "Junior's Eyes", "Johnny Blade", "Shock Wave", "Air Dance", "Swinging The Chain", and "Breakout". Warner, 1973. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The grandest scale and most elaborately furnished Black Sabbath album to this point – but they still bring the heavy! The title track is one of the most influential metal songs ever, with the foreboding lyrics, trudging stomp of a rhythmic pace and those bridges that are almost pretty – and the most of the rest of the album is great, too – more carefully produced than the previous few without compromising the menace. Titles include "A National Acrobat", "Fluff", "Sabbra Cadabra", "Spiral Architect", "Looking For Today", and "Who Are You". LP, Vinyl record album

Black Sabbath going strong – very much in their own space by this point in their career, setting a sound that countless others would try to follow – but never match for fierceness like this! The fuzz is definitely turned up to 11, the rhythms move at a breakneck speed, and Ozzy's vocals have all the mean, sinister sounds that set a generation on fire – plenty of energy to fill up long tracks that include "Megalomania", "Hole In The Sky", "Symptom Of The Universe", "Supertzar", "Am I Going Insane", and "The Writ". Warner, 1971. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Quite possibly the greatest moment of genius ever from Black Sabbath – and a genre-changing record that influenced generations! The group are at their lean, raw best here – free from any cliches at all, and working in an incredibly heady brew of fuzzy guitar, romping bass, and dark drums – all topped by the instantly recognizable screech of the young Ozzy Osborne! Guitarist Tony Iommi virtually redefines rock use of the guitar with this record alone – and the Oz follows suit with some of the creepiest vocals set to record ever. Titles include the classics "Paranoid" and "Iron Man", plus "War Pigs", "Planet Caravan", "Electric Funeral", "Hand Of Doom", and "Rat Salad". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Brownout Presents – Brown SabbathBrown Sabbath 2 ... LP
Ubiquity, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A sweet return to Brown Sabbath territory – that wicked blend of deep funk rhythms and fuzzy guitar, served up by the Brownout collective! The groove has some of the Latin elements that you'd know from Adrian Quesada's other work – but the rising guitar lines dominate a lot more – as do the horns, which crest nicely above the music, to ensure that there's a bit more soul here than on the original Black Sabbath versions of the songs! Yet the vocals by Alex Marrero are also sometimes right in Ozzy territory – which brings things back to base a bit – making for one of the most unusual takes on the music of Black Sabbath you'll ever hope to hear. Titles include "Fairies Wear Boots", "Snowblind", "Supernaut", "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath", "Sweet Leaf", "Electric Funeral", and "Children Of The Grave". LP, Vinyl record album

Verve/Gitanes (Netherlands), 1991. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic pairing of the vocals of Abbey Lincoln and the tenor sax of Stan Getz – one that's captured here for the very first time on record, at a point that's just a few months shy of Stan's too-early death! Both players had really grown a lot during the 80s – and the match here is wonderful – the maturing tones of Stan's tenor, and Abbey's way of doing more with less than ever before – a special sort of magic that works equally well on familiar and unfamiliar tunes! The rest of the group here is equally great – Hank Jones on piano, Charlie Haden on bass, Mark Johnson on drums, and Maxine Roach guesting on viola on two tracks too. Arrangements are by Abbey – and titles include "When I'm Called Home", "And How I Hoped For Your Love", "Time For Love", "Summer Wishes Winter Dreams", "You Made Me Funny", and "Bird Alone". ✨✧ Yabby YouConquering Lion ... LP
Micron/Pressure Sounds (UK), 1976. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A roots reggae classic from the 70s – a much more obscure set than the giants of the generation by Bob Marley and Black Uhuru, but a set that's got a similar sort of righteous power – maybe even more so, given that Yabby You has the freedom of an indie label setting to get his message across! The set actually took years to put together, which you can hear in the mix of approaches that are used from track to track – material recorded at Black Ark, Dynamic, Channel One, and Harry J – which has creates a sense of variety that you'd not as likely to hear on a record of this nature at the time – although the sound is completely unified, thanks to the spirit of Yabby You's message. King Tubby handled the mixing, and creates a deep sound to match the lyrics – on titles that include "Covetous Men", "Anti Christ", "Carnal Mind", "Love Thy Neighbour", "Run Come Rally", "Jah Vengeance", and "The Man Who Does The Work". The LP edition features 10 bonus tracks – all the dubs from the album! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Abbey LincolnAbbey Sings Billie – Live At The UJC Vol 2 ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1987. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Abbey Lincoln takes on the legacy of Billie Holiday – in a strong live set recorded with a small group at the end of the 80s! The setting's a bit more relaxed here than on some of Abbey's other albums of the period – a bit looser and sometimes more languid, but only in the best sort of ways to get at the moodiness of Billie Holiday's approach to the tunes. A few numbers seem to bristle with a bit more of that Abbey Lincoln sense of pride – that righteous legacy that runs straight from Billie's classic "Strange Fruit" – but overall, the spirit of Holiday's more traditional approach definitely guides the performance. The group's a quartet – with Harold Vick on tenor – and titles on this second volume include "For All We Know", "No More", "Gimme A Pigfoot", "God Bless The Child", "For Heaven's Sake", and "Don't Explain". A stunner from the Afro Funk scene of the 70s – and the kind of record that makes us realize just how much greatness there is to discover! Years back, we thought we'd heard all the good cuts from the sub-Saharan continent – but a record like this really makes us sit up and take new notice – grabbed by the core funky rhythms of the combo, which feel like some lost east coast funky 45 on the harder moments, and which get some cool production and keyboard touches on other tracks – all to perfectly underscore the group's amazingly catchy vocals! The organ lines burn right on top of the basslines, creating these waves of soul that grab us right away – and titles include "Funky Girl", "Feel Alone", "Orule", "Be Yourself", "I Don't Want No-Body", and "Laila". Joey AlexanderJoey – Monk – Live ... CD
Motema, 2017. Used ... $7.99
The best sort of Thelonious Monk set in our opinion – the kind of record that draws heavily from the legacy of the master, but also delivers something completely new and fresh! Let's face it, Monk would wince at the idea of folks just copying his style and ideas – and Joey Alexander hardly does that at all here, by really transforming familiar Monk numbers with this modern approach that's both fluid and chunky at the same time! Alexander's hands on the keys are amazing – and almost feel like he's grabbing chunks of sound out of the air, to sculpt these sonic shapes based on the ideas of the tunes. The structure of the tunes is subtly but greatly enhanced by the work of Scott Colley on bass and Willie Jones III on drums – and titles include "Ugly Beauty", "Rhythm A Ning", "Straight No Chaser", "Pannonica", and "Evidence". Herb AlpertBeyond ... LP
A&M, 1980. Sealed ... $9.99
An incredible later record from Herb Alpert – working in a soulful funky fusion mode that really is well beyond the style that made him famous in the 60s! We love the easy breezy 60s sound of Herb & The Tijuana Brass too, but he really stepped up his game in exciting ways on records like Rise, and he takes some even further, previously unexplored creative steps on Beyond, this aptly titled set! Plenty of smoothed out funky fusion grooves, especially on the first half of the record, but by the midway point he's also dabbling in Spanish guitar inflected melodies, bringing in some spacey electronics and sequencing, and other daring twists – but never compromises on the consistently groovy feel overall. Includes "Kamali", "The Continental", "Reach For The Stars", "Red Hot", "Beyond", "Keep It Goin'", "The Factory" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Tremendous work by a jazz group we've not seen on any other records – working here in a set of live improvisations recorded in Austria in 1978! A millennial classic from Erykah Badu – a record that came along right as the current century was starting up, to show a soulful path that would keep things strong for many years to come! The album grabbed a bigger audience than Erykah's first, but still kept things strong – really focusing in on that amazing vocal style that made the singer such a unique talent – and which always had edges that were sharper, and runs that were deeper, than some of her contemporaries who might be able to trick a phrase with a bit of spirit, but never deliver the whole thing in the way that Badu can! Themes are both personal and hinting at her political turns to come – and titles include "Kiss Me On My Neck", "Didn't Cha Know", "My Life", "AD 2000", "Bag Lady", "In Love With You", and "Booty". This isn't the first time that pianist Kenny Barron and bassist Dave Holland have played together – but there's definitely something special about the record that really grabs our ears – and it's not just the excellent work on drums by Johnathan Blake! Barron's at his roundest, most soulful sort of tone – really grabbing the notes out of the air in this wonderful way – and Holland really follows suit too, with this very personal, organic approach that's such a change from some of his more experimental work of years back – and which makes him a stunning part of the group, especially at all those many moments when he and Barron dance around each other's sound with this beautifully resonant vibe. An excellent collection of work from Pia Beck – a Dutch pianist who first burned things up with some stunning instrumental tracks in the postwar years, then developed into a great singer too! As you might guess from the title, Pia began with a boogie woogie approach – blinding work on the piano that rivaled some of the American greats of the time – and as the years went on, she moved into jump blues and bebop too – handled with a great sense of charm, and chops that make her way more than a European player just dabbling in styles. There's never been a good collection of Beck's work from the time before – and this CD brings together 27 singles recorded for Philips, including work with Cor Steyn – a mixture of vocal and instrumental tunes, with cuts that include "I Didn't Slip I Wasn't Pushed I Fell", "Beck's Boogie", "Bop Kiss", "Botch A Me", "Haven't Got A Worry", "Lullaby Of Birdland", "I'm Feeling Blue At The Blue Note", and "Chickery Chick". Arista/Expansion (UK), 1982. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
A jazz funk masterpiece, and THE record by the legendary Don Blackman – the only one issued under his own name for many many years, and a famous little set that's been sampled endlessly over the years, and for good reason! The vibe here is one that's barely been matched again – a blend of 70s fusion, bassy funk, and even tighter riffing – all put together with a greater depth and sense of soul than most other records of its type. Blackman's a GRP contemporary of Bernard Wright, Tom Browne, and Weldon Irvine – and there's bits of all their sound in the work here, but somehow Don does it even better – hitting these grooves, notes, and lines that seem to fall from the heavens – and which still stand as some of the hippest music of his generation. A record to file proudly next to your copies of Ramp and James Mason – and like those gems, the kind of record that only happens once in an artists career! Jaw-dropping work from Charles Bradley – a stunning album that's maybe his best so far – and that's saying a hell of a lot, given the quality of his previous work! There's a focus and power here that really puts Charles on top – from the bold statement at the start of the record, to the range of expressive, emotive lyrics all the way through – given superb support in a range of deep soul and funky currents from the likes of Budos Band, Menehan Street Band, Gospel Queens, Saun & Starr, and Sha La Das! Yet none of these guests ever feel like they're sharing the spotlight with Charles – because, like the James Brown Show of the late 60s, all these super-strong talents are working in constellation around Bradley's majesty – a bold soul vision that's never burned this brightly before. Never-issued work from this legendary fusion group – a 1971 live performance recorded in Rotterdam, and a set of tracks that's a perfect complement to the legendary Nucleus albums issued by Vertigo at the time! Leader Ian Carr is upfront on trumpet – but as with the best Nucleus recordings, this is definitely an all-out group affair – driven by very strong work from John Marshall on drums and Roy Babbington on bass – and filled with work from two different simultaneous electric pianos, handled by both Hywel Thomas and Karl Jenkins, the latter of whom also blows a bit of oboe. Other reeds are from Brian Smith on tenor, soprano sax, and flute – and all tracks are nice and long, and often quite funky – with titles that include "Snakehips Dream", "We'll Talk About It Later", "Song For The Bearded Lady", "Exit Interlude 1", "Persephone's Jive", "Exit Interlude 2", and "Oasis". Edsel (UK), 1980s. New Copy 7CD ... $64.99 69.99
A huge batch of work from Change – all the group's classic albums from the 80s, plus some great work from later years too – all with bonus tracks added to most of the records! First up is Glow Of Love – the classic debut from Change – and the start of an amazing run of groovers in the early 80s! The set's got a tight, jazzy feel throughout – a stripped-down approach to disco modes, with the same focus on the basslines that you'd find in work by Chic – but a style that's almost even more instrumentally focused overall, given the great range of studio players who worked on the set. Yet there's also some key vocal moments, too – work by Luther Vandross that really helps make some of the best tracks sparkle, and which went onto catapult Vandross into a rich solo career on his own. Next is Miracles – a brilliant second set from Change – working here without Luther Vandross on lead vocals, but hardly missing a beat at all! As before, the basslines are at the core of the set – a sweet stripped-down approach that brings even more focus onto the bottom of the groove for early 80s dancefloors – with loads of numbers that step along in a really groovy mode – one quite far from the cliches of disco, and inflected by loads of jazzy elements that keep things fresh over the years! Vocals are by James Robinson – previously with Lonnie Liston Smith – Diva Gray, and Jocelyn Shaw. Sharing Your Love is sweet modern soul from this great group – one of the brightest points in major label soul during the early 80s! Change, ironically, is a group that went through a number of line-up changes, even in their prime – with the tight, clubby, yet genuinely soulful production a constant. This record is made all the better for the beautifully soulful dual lead vocals of James Robinson and Deborah Cooper. The tracks have deeply layered live instrumentation – keyboards, guitar, percussion, horns and strings – blended seamlessly with early 80s production touches. This Is Your Love is an overlooked set from Change – a record that possibly wasn't as hit-worthy as some of their previous efforts – yet one that still had the group very much at the top of their game! By this point, Change had really evolved past being just a studio project, into a rock-solid soul group with a definite ear for a groove – particularly the tight, lean sort of rhythms that percolated in the post-Chic era – making a perfect fit for the slightly jazzy production of the record. Bassbits and beats drive most of the rhythms, but there's still a nice degree of warmth – and vocals are handled by Deborah Cooper, James Robinson, Rick Brennan, and Timmy Allen – who each seem to get their moment in the spotlight, furthering the well-rounded sound of the record. Next is Change Of Heart – a game-changing album from Change – a real breakthrough for the early 80s international soul combo! Change Of Heart has some great production by Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis – and on top of that, it's perhaps the best set of songs the group had recorded to to date. Jam/Lewis wrote half the tunes and produced most of the album, which is front-loaded with some of the best of them. Turn On Your Radio is not nearly as well-known as their first few hits, but still in that all-solid approach to the groove that was the Change trademark during the early 80s! The sound is a bit more stripped down than before – tight beats and keyboards, mostly in a mellow to midtempo mode – all topped with vocals from male and female members of the group! Change still have a great way with a hook here – an approach to soul that's tight and professional, yet not nearly as cloying as some of the chart-climbing acts of their generation. And as before, the keyboards are almost as great as the vocals – with slight jazzy inflections that warm up the tunes nicely! Last up is Love 4 Love – a 2018 comeback for Change – still sounding great all these many years later, but in a slightly different way! The balance between all elements here is fantastic – as the music has all the best parts of the group's earlier music, but also updates the sound a bit – in the way that a combo like Incognito or Brand New Heavies were updating older soul music back in the 90s, by grabbing all the strongest parts of the past, and fusing them into a fresh lean groove. The songs are upbeat, positive, and full of the kind of catchy hooks that Change always did so well! Box set features 78 tracks in all – with bonus tracks added to most albums! CD

ClashGive Em Enough Rope ... LP
Epic, 1978. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
The second album from The Clash – ferocious, melodic and masterful bits of barbed greatness from the group – the greatest flaw of which is that it's not the first album. They're still completely great, playing in peak form even with the less shambling, slightly more polished production of Sandy Pearlman. This one stands out beautifully to us nowadays, since most of the songs aren't as overplayed as the more zeitgeiest-y earlier ones or the Mtv hits that came later on. Essential!! Titles include "Julie's In The Drug Squad", "All The Young Punks", "Last Gang In Town", "Guns On The Roof", "Cheap-Skate", "Drug-Stabbing Time", and "Safe European Home". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label Epic pressing. Cover has a very tiny seam split on bottom and is really great overall.)

Clear Blue SkyClear Blue Sky ... CD
Vertigo/Universal (Japan), 1970. New Copy ... $13.99
An insanely ripping little record – one that comes on with all the raw power of the heaviest work by Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin at the time – even though these guys never hit that sort of fame! The group's a trio with an incredibly deft touch – able to make the simple combination of guitar, bass, and drums explode in wonderfully fresh ways – with some quick-changes that really leave us breathless, and really show off their amazing talents – but never in a way that's overdone at all – as these guys have more of the bottom-end, blues-inspired appeal of Zeppelin during their early years. Vocals are by guitarist John Simms, who's also got a wild way of singing – and titles include "The Rocket Ride", "I'm Comin Home", "Birdcatcher", "My Heaven", "You Mystify", and "Tool Of My Trade". Trad Vibe (France), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 34.99
A legendary bit of funky fusion from the French scene of the 70s – the standout set from Cortex, a combo who's very heavy on the keyboards! The tunes have a feel that's quite different than American electric work of the time – funky, but also a bit breezy too – with a strong Brazilian influence in some of the rhythms, and hip use of female vocals alongside the Fender Rhodes – which makes for a double layer of sound that's totally great! There's a bit of alto sax in the instrumentation, but most of the sound comes from the interplay between keyboards, voice, bass, and drums – rolling along in a sound that's stunningly soulful, and which makes the record one of the hippest European dates from the decade. Tremendous all the way through – with tracks that include "Automne", "L'Enfant Samba", "La Rue", "Go Round", "Madbass", "Sabbat", "Mary Et Jeff", and "Chanson D'Un Jour D'Hiver". Cleveland Crochet & The Sugar BeesHillbilly Ramblers & Sugar Bees ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $18.99 20.99
The complete history of an overlooked hero of cajun music – and a musician who's also quite a rocker as well – fiddler Cleveland Crochet, who cut some fantastic work for a handful of small Louisiana labels in the late 50s and early 60s – often with a great swampy blend of cajun fiddle and more rocking elements in the rhythm! Cleveland had one minor hit – the "Sugar Bee" mentioned in the title – but all the work here is equally great, pulled from a variety of small label recordings for companies that include Folk-Star, Khoury's, Goldband, Lyric and Swallow. In addition to tracks made under Cleveland's name, there's also work cut with Vorris "Shorty" LeBlanc and Jay Stutes – a total of 38 tracks in all, with titles that include "Sugar Bee", "Waltz Of A Broken Heart", "Rambler's Lonely Dream", "Good Morning Blues", "Telephone Port Arthur", "Sweet Thing", "Hound Dog Baby", "Drunkard's Dream", "Sha Meon Waltz", "Hey Boss Man", "Sweet Lick", and "My Little Cabbage". Wide Hive, 2021. New Copy ... About December 1, 2021 (delayed)
A record with a really special story, and maybe one of the best sessions we've heard from the gang at Wide Hive in many years! The setting is the legendary Studio A at Fantasy Records – where this unique group recorded the album days before the closing of that storied recording spot – working with a sense of soulful imagination that seems to channel all the greatness of the 70s jazz captured in the spot, with a lean, laidback mode that's completely wonderful all the way through! The group features key work from the mighty Roger Glenn on vibes – an artist who did some of his own great work at Fantasy in the 70s with Larry Mizell – and there's also really wonderful work on tenor and alto from Kasey Knudsen, alongside sounds from Mike Blankenship on Rhodes, and Wide Hive stalwarts Gregory Howe on Hammond B3 and Erik Jekabson on trumpet. All tunes were penned by Howe and Jekabson, and arranged by the latter – and titles include "Journey Down Parker", "Last Days Of Studio A", "Steak Out", "Heroine's Portrait", "Conducting Poppies", and "Rabbit Trap". DioHoly Diver (picture disc) (2021 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Warner, 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
One of the best heavy metal albums of all time! Ronnie James Dio had long been hailed for having some of the finest vocal chords in hard rock before this first Dio album arrived – having led the the obscure but beloved Elf, Rainbow and Black Sabbath in the 70s and earlier 80s – but it's Holy Diver that cements his legend. These days, it's kind of stunning how much he transcends metal cliche, as opposed to wallowing in it. Holy Diver has killer songs, Ronnie's unrivaled vocals and melodies, and the band focuses on crunching riffs instead of silly guitar solos and other elements that overwrought and badly dated so many other metal bands of the era. Includes "Stand Up & Shout", the eternal classics "Holy Diver" and "Rainbow In The Dark", "Gypsy", "Caught In The Middle", "Don't Talk To Strangers", "Straight Through The Heart", "Invisible" and "Shame On The Night". East Of UndergroundHell Below (East Of Underground/Soap/Black Seeds/Sound Trek) (3CD set) ... CD
US Army/Now Again, 1971/1972. New Copy 3CD ... $12.99 24.98
Proof that the US Army had plenty going on during the 70s – as you'll hear from this killer set of military-produced grooves from East Of Underground! The set goes way past the previous East Of Underground reissue – to feature work by the groups Soap, Black Seeds, and Sound Trek – all wrapped up in a beautiful package that's as visually pleasing as the music is funky! The cuts here were all recorded by US Army servicemen during the height of the Vietnam war – as Army-issued albums designed to encourage recruitment (as if a few funky grooves could help offset the bad press the war was getting on TV!) But despite that odd origin, the music here is all pretty great – mostly covers of familiar tunes from the time, but recorded with a nicely gritty quality that's mighty nice – and which makes the overall feel of the records like digging into some lost small studio tapes – ala Numero! Now Again have done a great job of putting together the whole package, too – contributing a wealth of notes and photos, and really digging deep into the scene in which these unique records were created. Not only that, but the packaging also replicates the style of the original odd releases too! The set features a CD each of music by East Of Underground and Soap – plus another CD that brings together an unusual double LP by the groups Black Seeds and Sound Trek. Titles include "I Just Want To Celebrate", "Kool & The Gang", "Walking In The Rain", "Backstabbers", "I Love Everything About You", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Go Outside In The Rain", "Black Magic Woman", "Hell Below", "Higher", "Popcorn/Santana", "Walk On By", "Java Girl", and "Get Together". Knitting Factory, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.99
A great batch of rare tracks from the legendary Fela Kuti – unreleased for many years after their recording – which was done in London in 1971, when EMI sent Fela to the UK for a special session at their Abbey Road studios! The set benefits from the great production values of that historic place – and the band grooves tightly in tracks that are a little bit shorter than usual, but which still burn with all the intensity of the later African recordings – almost a more focused approach that draws a bit more link between American funk before some of the freewheeling jams of the side-long Afro Funk tracks! Titles include "J'ehin J'ehin", "Egbe Mi O", "Who're You", "Buy Africa", and "Fight To Finish". LP, Vinyl record album

Flow Trio with Joe McPheeWinter Garden ... CD
ESP, 2021. New Copy ... $12.99
The legendary Joe McPhee makes a great appearance here – pushing the Flow Trio to a level of intensity that makes the album rival some of the mid 60s greats from the early years of the ESP label! The sound is wonderfully full and free – McPhee just blowing tenor, with a fantastic tone – alongside the tenor and soprano of Louie Belogenis, the bass of Joe Morris, and drums of Charles Downs – three players who definitely know and understand each others' energy, and work together seamlessly at level that just makes the contributions of McPhee more icing on the cake. The whole album is freely improvised, and with a nice sense of variety – on selections that include "Harbinger", "Recombinant", "Rabble Rouser", "Glistening", "Accretion", and "Winter Garden". CD

A double-disc set that documents the live efforts of the Free Music Ensemble – a power trio featuring Ken Vandermark on reeds, Nat McBride on bass, and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums! The style here is very much in the legacy of Vandermark's trio work of years past, especially in association with Scandinavian players – a mix of searingly intense numbers and other more introspective ones – often performances that are focused strongly around sound textures. One CD here features a 2005 Boston show, and the other includes a concert the next day, recorded up in Montreal (some travel schedule there!). Titles include "Exit The Republic", "Drift", "But Only Almost", "False Rabbit", "On A Wire", "Looking At Dutch Stairs", "New Reference", "Ottica", and "Montage". CD

Mike GibbsRevisiting Tanglewood 63 – The Early Tapes ... CD
Jazz In Britain (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $18.99 22.98
A great precursor to the legendary album Tanglewood 63 – one of the touchstones of British jazz at the start of the 70s, and a masterpiece from trombonist/arranger Mike Gibbs! The tracks here are live studio takes on some of the tunes that appeared on the set, plus other material too – all crafted with Gibbs' stunning sense of color and tone, as he brings together free-thinking acoustic jazz musicians with a few slight electric touches from Chris Spedding on guitar, Mick Pyne on organ, and Roy Babbington on organ – players who really help state the fact that the music is new and different, but never in a more familiar jazz-rock way! The horn players are excellent too – and in addition to Gibbs on trombone, the set features work from Henry Lowther and Harry Beckett on trumpets, Chris Pyne and Malcolm Griffiths on trombones, and Alan Skidmore, Stan Sulzman, Tony Roberts, and Jim Phillip on reeds. Drums are by John Marshall on most tracks, and Frank Ricotti adds in a lot of cool percussion – including some mighty nice vibes – on titles that include "Canticle", "Country Roads", "Sojurn", "Five For England", "Fanfare", "June The 15th 1967", and "Tanglewood 63". Griot GalaxyKins ... LP
Black & White/Third Man, 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
An overlooked gem from the Detroit scene of the early 80s – played by a group who came after the generation of Tribe and Strata Records, but who went on to have some really slow-burning influence in their own sort of way! The music definitely has echoes of the loft and spiritual jazz scenes of the 70s – but the quintet also really open things up with some of the more flexible rhythms that were coming out of New York during the same period, and working with a slight touch of more ambitious structures – of the sort you might have heard on overseas labels recording American jazz musicians during the 80s. Reeds are at the core of the set – playec by the trio of Faruq Z Bey on tenor and alto, Anthony Holland on alto and soprano, and David McMurray on tenor, alto, soprano, and flute – given very creative energy by Tani Tabbal on drums, and Jaribu Shahid on both acoustic and electric bass. Titles include "Xy-Moch", "Zycron", "Zenelog Aintro", "Androgeny", "Kins", and "Xy Moch". LP, Vinyl record album

Justin Heathcliff (Osamu Kitajima)Justin Heathcliff ... CD
Everland (Netherlands), 1971. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
A weird little album from early 70s Japan – an obscure project from Osamu Kitajima – who'd later be known for his jazz and fusion work! This set's completely different from those recordings – and is an Anglo rock project with lyrics in English, and a very groovy sound throughout! The music's got some of the softer musings of Donovan – and the vocals do too – but the guitars are often a bit more forceful, and have a bit of early Bowie intensity at times, especially when they're mixed with some fuller arrangements. If the set had come out of the Abbey Road late 60s scene, we'd hardly be surprised – but we like it even more for it's even weirder origins in Japan. Titles include "Sea", "You Know What I Mean", "A Tiny Island", "Good Bye", "Life", "To Live In Peace", "Love Makes The World Complete", and "Let's All Sing Along". CD
