Pazy & The Black HippiesWa Ho Ha ... LP
Secret Stash, 1978. Near Mint- ... $34.99
A weird little record from the Nigerian scene of the 70s – much more laidback than you might expect, and a set with a definite Jamaican influence too! At times, some of these tracks are almost more reggae than Afro Funk – although at other points, there's definitely the fierce energy of some more familiar Nigerian music of the period – making for a really cool blend that sets this album strongly apart from most of its contemporaries! Production is great – not really dubby, but kind of spread-out – in ways that make the Afro-styled numbers really sparkle strongly – and which trips out some of the more Jamaican sounding grooves. Titles include "Papa's Black Dog", "Lahila", "Elizabeth", "Come Back Again", "My Home", and "Jahojah Comfort Me". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Stelvio CiprianiQualcuno Ha Visto Uccidere ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The only thing greater than a Stelvio Cipriani soundtrack is a Stelvio Cipriani soundtrack from the early 70s – because that was the time when the maestro was really at the top of his game, and doing a wonderful job of blending electric and acoustic instrumentation! The music here is a perfect example of his genius at work – as warm moments balance with funkier ones, all using these notes that are gently crafted, but delivering a surprising amount of power – balanced out in very different ways than Morricone or some of his contemporaries. Cipriani's not afraid to go for a love theme when needed, but can also get nice and groovy too – which he does superbly on the 20 tracks on the set! CD

✨✧ Raul SeixasKrig-Ha Bandolo (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Philips/Polysom (Brazil), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An incredible album from Brazilian rock legend Raul Seixas – easily one of the most important artists to emerge after the Tropicalia generation – and a singer with a sound that's as striking as his image on the cover! The album's got an explosive blend of styles – everything from psychedelic samba to country rock to easy rock tunes – all bound together by the strong sense of presence that helped Seixas elevate to become one of Brazili's most controversial rock stars of the time, all with the kind of legacy you might expect from the cover image! The sound is great – very different than what American and Anglo groups were doing at the time, although with sly nods to their modes from time to time – and titles include the English track "How Could I Know", plus "As Minas Do Rei Salomao", "Mosca Na Sopa", "Cachorro", "Al Capone", and the strange electronic "Introducao". Gal CostaPele Do Futuro – Ao Vivo ... CD
Biscoito Fino (Brazil), 2019. New Copy ... $32.99
Gal Costa somehow looks younger than usual on the cover, and she sounds younger than usual on the set too – a fantastic live album recorded with backing from a tight rock-based combo – in a way that seems to intensify Gal, and bring her back to the gripping sounds of her work in the Tropicalia generation! The instrumentation is lean, and heavy on electric guitar – and Costa's vocals come across with a great sense of power and majesty in the setting – a quality that's perhaps also inspired by the crowd at the concert, who are clearly in love with the lady, and seem to roar with thunderous approval at the start of each new song. Titles include "Lagrimas Negras", "De Um Role", "Azul", "Sublime", "Chuva De Prata", "Motor", "Mae De Todas As Vozes", "Mamae Coragem", "Vaca Profana", "O Que E Que Ha", and "Sua Estupidez". CD

Danny Guglielmi/DenaAdventure In Sound ... LP
Tops, Mid 50s. Very Good ... $14.99
A compelling little set from Danny Guglielmi – a mix of weird instrumental numbers and some straighter vocal ones that feature singing by the lovely Dena! The album's somewhere between offbeat jazz and bachelor pad territory – and the album features early tape experiments that have Danny playing bass, guitar, piano, and violin – overdubbing each of them in ways that sometimes used odd effects to create some really weird sounds! The album's never totally over the top, but still pretty cool overall – and Dena's vocals are nicely light and sing-song. Titles include "Mosquito Festival", "Na Wa Da Ha", "Jealous", "AEIOU", "It's So Peaceful In The Country", "Hot Schottish", "Firelight Reverie", and "Bullfrog". LP, Vinyl record album

Guts bills this set as "an Afro-Tropical experiment" – but to us, the album's just a further expansion of his wonderful talents as a producer – which have really come a long way in just a few years! Guts maybe got his start in hip hop, but he's able to embrace a globe's worth of sound, especially in a project like this – which we might liken to some of the more globally-conscious records by Quantic – although Guts is working here on the Parisian scene, and maybe has even closer access to cross-cultural channels! Later Curtom work from The Impressions – but still plenty darn nice, with a super-dope vocal group approach on the best tracks! The title cut is worth the price of admission alone – as it's a slow-stepping harmony tune that really burns with a sweet mellow feel – sung to perfection by a quartet lineup that includes younger singers Ralph Johnson and Reggie Torian working with older Impressions Fred Cash and Sam Gooden. Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancy had a good hand in much of the record – bringing it into the warm, sophisti-soul style they were using at the time – and arrangements include some great work by Richard Evans and Rich Tufo. Lebron BrothersLlegamos/We're Here ... LP
Cotique, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $12.99
Soaring salsa from the mighty Lebron Brothers – a group who first burst on the Latin scene with a strong run of Latin Soul recordings, but who are taking a more straightforward approach here! Yet that change hardly makes any difference, as the Lebrons still have that bold, youthful energy that made their records such a great change from some of the too-big bands of the previous generation in Latin music – and their shift from boogaloo to salsa is a great example of the way the key younger acts were helping make the waves that so many other artists would follow! Pablo Lebron sings lead vocals, and Angel and Jose Lebron co-lead the mighty tight grooves – which include alto from Gabe Gill and tenor from Herman Saldana – both players who keep a soulful sound to the set. Titles include "Mi Fracaso", "Si Ti", "Todo Lo Hechaste Ha Perder", "Orgullo, Riqueza Y Lujo", and "Tus Recuerdos". LP, Vinyl record album

Miriam MakebaPata Pata – The Hit Sound Of Miriam Makeba ... LP
Reprise, Late 60s. Sealed ... $14.99
A huge breakthrough moment for Miriam Makeba – a South African singer who'd been bringing her music to the American scene for a number of years, but really took off in new soulful directions with this album! Previously, Makeba was maybe more confined to the world of folk – mostly recording with acoustic styles in a stripped-down mode – but this record has her soaring on arrangements from American studio talents Jimmy Wisner and Jerry Ragovoy, the latter of whom produced the record too – and mixes in some very hip New York soul modes, and even some larger charts that really expand the sound. The huge hit on the set is "Pata Pata" – a tune that firmly put Makeba in the memory of American music – but the whole album is great overall, and other titles include "Click Song Number 1", "A Piece Of Ground", "West Wind", "Ha Po Zamani", and "Jol'inkomo". Makoto Tarashita & Harold LandTopology (2 x 45rpm pressing) ... LP
Aketa's Disk/BBE (UK), 1984. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $26.99 29.99
A really fantastic album from tenorist Harold Land – a very rare Japanese set that may well blow away even his best albums of the 70s! The record features pianist Makoto Tarashita in the lead – a strongly spiritual player with a nicely modal sensibility – spun out over long tracks that have wonderful energy, and which seem to set Land loose on these solos that are full of life and imagination, and a sense of soul that he doesn't always bring to the studio! The rest of the group features Yasushi Yoneki on bass, Mike Reznikoff on drums, and Takayuki Koizumi on percussion – and the percussion really adds a lot to the songs, picking up the rhythmic core, while also giving them a nicely organic vibe too. Titles include "Dragon Dance", "Takeuma", "Crossing", "World Peace", "Dear Friends", and "I Ha To Bo". LP, Vinyl record album

Sarolta ZalatnaySarolta Zalatnay ... CD
B- Music/Finders Keepers, 1970s. Used ... $13.99
Fuzzy, funky, and freaky – some really incredible work from Hungarian rocker Sarolta Zalatnay – an artist with a groove that's a lot easier to get than her name! The work here was recorded in collaboration with 70s groups Locomitiv GT, Metro, Omega, and Skorpio – all of whom are pretty darn funky at times – with an approach that mixes heavy drums, rumbling bass, and lots of fuzzy guitars – making for a fair bit of break-heavy tracks on the set. Topped with Sarolta's vocals, the sound is somewhere between Betty Davis on her classic Just Sunshine albums and Gal Costa at the end of the 60s – but also a fair bit more exotic too, given the Hungarian language, and the use of Eastern phrasing on some of the tunes. And if you're scratching your head because you've never heard of Zalatnay before, don't worry – because the package features some great notes on her sordid career from the 70s onward – even though the music alone here should be more than enough to win you over! Titles include "Ne Hidd El", "Itt A Nyar", "Egyser", "Rogos Uton", "Zold Borostyan", "Munanyag Almok", "The Freak", "Move Over", "Oh Ha Milliomos Lennek", and "Fekete Beat". CD

Bemol/Discobertas (Brazil), 1968. New Copy ... $18.99
A cool collection of late 60s rock and pop from Brazil – and a set that stands as a nice contrast to some of the "song festival" albums from the time on Philips and Odeon! Like those sets, this one presents up-and-coming artists working through a variety of material – but rather than showcasing new styles, the modes here are maybe more in the jovem guarda style of the mid 60s – a bit more slavishly tied to American and European styles, although a few of the tunes here are of Brazilian origin too. There's a bit more complexity and sophistication to the music than the chart pop of a few years before – kind of in the way that west coast pop rock acts were letting their hair down a bit by the late 60s – and titles include "Como E Grande O Meu Amor Por Voce" by Os Intrusus, "O Que Ha De Mal Em Mim" by Bitons, "You Only Live Twice" by Os Agitadores, "When Summer Is Gone" by Analfabitles, "Voce Nao Serve Pra Mim" by Amir Francisco, and "Travessia" by Edinho. VariousShe Came From Hungary – 60s Beat Girls From The Eastern Bloc (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Qualiton/Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $24.99 28.99
Great girl pop from a really unlikely source – not the better-known British and French female singles that rocked the European scene in the 60s – but a whole host of more obscure numbers from behind the Iron Curtain – all tracks recorded in Hungary, but hardly ever issued to the rest of the world at the time! Turns out, those Hungarians were very much in line with the kinds of sounds that were romping up London, Paris, and Rome at the time – beat-heavy, soul-influenced grooves that bring a new sort of brashness to the female singers in the lead – and give them a kind of universal appeal, even if you can't understand the lyrics at all! At some level, the instrumentation here is more than enough – loads of groovy organ lines, thumping bass, soaring horns, and all sorts of other groovy touches – but the unusual language of the vocals adds a very cool other aspect to the sound. All tracks are from the Qualiton catalog, and presented here with detailed notes and history in English – for titles tha tinclude "Ez Az Utolso Randevunk" by Eva Nagy, "Konyorogni Nem Fogok" by Zsuzsa Matray, "Keresek Egy Fiut" by Maria Wittek, "Mindig Tanul Az Ember" by Beata Karda, "Fekete Beat" by Sarolta Zalatnay, "Ha Csak Egy Fokkal Szebb Az Ordognel" by Gabi Fenyvesi, "Judas Vagy" by Kyri Ambrus, "Keresem A Szot" by Zsuzsa Koncz, and "Zsakutca" by Clementina Magay. Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/1980s/Early 90s. Near Mint- 2LP ... $24.99
A musical document of an amazing moment in the New York scene – the late 80s/early 90s wave of vogue balls – which were almost a collision of club culture with high fashion! There was a particularly rich gender-bending element to the vogue scene – and the music that accompanied it was a key part of that activity – tracks that had already risen to fame in crossover clubs from previous years, taken to new heights by DJs who provided music along with the voguing activity – in a great array of grooves from the disco years through early house music, brought together in ways that made 80s musical evolution make a heck of a lot of sense! The compilation album is a companion to the excellent book of the same name – also by Soul Jazz – and this 2LP part 1 version features tracks that include "Moment Of My Life" by Inner Life, "The Ha Dance (Ken/Lou mixx)" by Masters At Work, "Just Like A Queen (share the throne mix)" by Ellis D, "Is It All Over My Face" by Loose Joints, "Body Drill" by 2 Body's, "Love Hangover" by Diana Ross, "The Witch Doctor (dark ages mix)" by Armand Van Helden, and "Break 4 Love (Spanish fly mix)" by Raze. It's a strange thing to see Hugh Masekela sitting on a horse, out in a field – and the cover hardly gets at the energy that's going on inside – since the album features a full, funky live performance from the famous trumpeter – at a time when his group included piano and keyboards from the great Don Blackman! Barbes, Late 60s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A cool little compilation that's as groovy as you might guess from the title – and one that finally brings to light the lesser-known genre of chica – an odd fusion of cumbia rhythms with more psychedelic-styled instrumentation on farfisa, organ, and guitar! The core grooves remind us a bit of familiar cumbia, but the overall presentation is often a bit more rough-edged and almost garagey at times – a youthful interpretation of the genre that's pretty free with its approach to the music – and which often uses cool electronic touches and weird production techniques to create some really great sounds! Many tracks feature vocals, but the emphasis here seems mostly on the instrumentation – and titles include "Sonido Amazonico" by Los Mirlos, "Carinito" by Los Hijos Del Sol, "A Patricia" by Los Destellos, "Ya Se Ha Muerto Mi Abuelo" by Juaneco Y Su Combo, "La Danza De Los Mirlos" by Los Mirlos, ", "Linda Munequita" by Los Hijos Del Sol, and "Linda Nena" by Juaneco Y Su Combo. Continental/Groovie/Lion, 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $13.99
Massively heavy sounds from A Bolha – a Brazilian group who were previously known as The Bubbles, and backed up Gal Costa during the Tropicalia years – but who work here in a fuzzy, bassy groove that's totally great – definitely an heir to the headier sounds of the UK scene at the start of the 70s! The guitars are definitely in full force here, but the basslines drive things along strongly too – echoing some of the Peruvian sounds of the time, but with a bit more Brazilian sophistication – and definitely a musical echo of lessons learned during Tropicalia, even though the set's a fully instrumental one. Organ also figures in the mix too – and titles include "Bye My Friend", "Razao De Existir", "Um Passo A Frente", "A Esfera", and "Neste Rock Forever". Bonus tracks include "Sem Nada" and "18:30 Parte 1". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ A Certain RatioTo Each ... LP
Factory, Early 80s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $34.99
The first full album recorded by A Certain Ratio – and a mad mix of styles that's immediately compelling! The group are a key link here in so many traditions – British punk, 70s funk, dub, and late prog – all coming together under the godlike production talents of Martin Hannett to make the album one of the gleaming jewels in the crown of the young Factory Records label. There's never been a record of such scattered, skittish darkness – and even though short songs like "The Fox", "Forced Laugh", "Felch", "My Spirit", and "Loss" are arresting, the whole thing's magnificently capped off by the extended percussion jam "Winter Hill" – a tune that sounds like a batucada group trying to drum their way across a post-apocalyptic landscape! Arista, 1977. Very Good ... $7.99
Sweet modern soul with a sound that would get picked up on years later by the LA G-Funk scene. The album's produced by War's Far Out production team – and it's got a smooth sound that's mixed with moogy keyboards and compressed instrumentation on the best cuts. Some tracks are a bit too funky, but the mellow ones are very tasty. Includes the excellent track "Summer Love", plus "Cream City", "Magic Night", "Lonely Princess", and "Jungle Desire". Damon AaronHighlands ... CD
Ubiquity, 2008. Used ... $2.99
One of the most captivating albums we've heard on Ubiquity in a long time – and one of the most gentle, too! Damon Aaron's a wonderfully skilled singer/songwriter – one with a pensive, quiet sort of feel – but never in ways that are sleepy or noodly. Instead, he brings a bit of soul to his music – stretching the tunes out with slight cosmic touches on synth or keys, always used sparely, but in the best sort of ways to hearken back to some of the best folk funk moments of the 70s. Aaron's vocals are especially nice – soulful, but without ever trying too hard – and his natural warmth really shines through in the tunes. Beautiful stuff throughout – with a balance that few others could master – almost as if Nick Drake had been listening to Marvin Gaye, then was produced by Conny Plank instead of Joe Boyd! Aaron's previously worked with Breakestra, Build An Ark, and others – but he really sounds great here on his own. Titles include "Fire", "Matinee", "Fall", "Clouds", "Rainy Day", "Better", "First Love", "Giving", "Where Are You Now", and "It Reveals". CD

✨✧ Karen AbbottSin In The Second City – Madams, Ministers, Playboys & The Battle For American's Soul ... Book
Random House, 2007. New Copy ... $4.99 17.00
Our fair city of Chicago has always been a pretty sleazy place – but back at the start of the 20th century, there was a higher kind of sex trade going on – one that featured high class houses of ill-reputed, and well-educated hookers – which led to a lot more crossing over between the brothels and the boardrooms! This well-done book looks at a very specific time in the city's history – a point when Chicago was really coming into its own – both as a city of industry and a city of sin – a place where reformers rubbed shoulders with gangsters, as part of the new urban experiment. The book does a great job of tracing this larger narrative, in a way that's hardly as salacious as you might expect – a different sort of snapshot than the Devil In The White City. 364 pages, softcover. Salum Abdallah & Cuban Marimba BandNgoma Tanzania ... LP
Domino Sound, Early 60s. New Copy ... $16.99
Beautiful sounds from the short-lived musical legacy of Salum Abdallah and his Cuban Marimba Band – a group from Tanzania, but one who play with lots of influence from Latin Music – as you might guess from their name! And yet, unlike some of the larger, fuller Latin-influenced groups that were springing up on the West African scene of the 60s, this combo has a sound that's pretty stripped-down – often just heavy percussion and work on guitar – which appears to be a unique hybrid of the Cuban style of the instrument, which gets plucked and inflected in great ways next to the vocals! The well-done set might be the best we've seen so far from the Domino Sound label – and features tracks that include "Njoo Haraka", "Naumiya", "Cuba Cha Cha", "Kutenda Maovu", "Ngoma Iko Huku", "Macho Laini", "Masikitiko", and "Asiye Bahati Duniani". EMI/Dig This Way (Italy), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
The cover looks a bit cheesy – like some sort of Star Search graphic – but the album's a rock-solid gem from the second decade of Nigerian funk – recorded in Lagos with a great boogie vibe, and a groove that's as heavy on keyboards as it is on riffing guitar and percussion! Peter Abdul's got this falsetto style of singing that's quite unusual for the Nigerian scene – one that echoes American sweet soul of the 70s, but set to a groovier style – and backing vocalists often help push over the top to new heights – as he stretches his range over the top of the longer grooves in the set! Titles include "Just Start To Understand You", "Don't You Know", "Baby I Love You", "Get Down With Me", "Let's Do It", and "Sisi". LP, Vinyl record album

About Time, 1979. New Copy ... $7.99 11.99
A crowning moment of achievement for trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah – a record that draws on his rich experience working with Sun Ra, but focuses the energy into a warmer, more spiritual jazz setting overall! The album's a lost treasure from the US scene of the late 70s – a perfect melding of jazz modes of the time, and one of those dates that somehow has all the players sounding even better than usual – really hitting a unique space together – one that's rhythmic, yet searching – free, yet structured – and always open to new ideas throughout! In addition to trumpet from Abdullah, the group also features vibes from Jay Hoggard, French horn from Vincent Chaney, cello from Muneer Abdul Fatah, bass from Jerome Hunter, and drums from Rashied Sinan. Hunter's bass is an especially moving force in the session – giving the album a warm, soulful current that really holds things together – and titles include "Song of Tenderness", "Eternal Spiraling Spirit", "Long Time Black", and "Life's Force". Folkways, 1979. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
A beautifully poetic take on the transplantation of African sounds in the US scene – played on a variety of different instruments by Bilal Abdurahman! The tracks are mostly short, percussive ones – with the strongest focus on instrumentation, but with occasional vocal refrains from Bilal – usually in wordless or chanted form, although there's a few nice spoken bits too! Instrumentation is quite diverse – and includes balafon, xalam, and even Ugandan harp – on titles that include "Spirits Of Congo Square", "Ancestral Ode", "Fusion", "Congo Square Procession", "Lament", "Blues Is Born", and "Gogi Solo". A beautiful record – and one that definitely lives up to the "innovative" name in the title! The set's a bit more complex, and more jazz-based than some of the other Folkways albums from Bilal Abdurahman – still very much in the spare modes of his other records, but also with more of an emphasis on soprano sax and flute, played with these wonderfully lyrical styles – and mixed in with rhythms on woodblock, drums, and even various body parts! There's a kalimba on one number that sounds especially nice – and titles include "Witty Ditty", "Soprano Saxophone Interlude", "Tone Poem Mysterioso", "Counting Rhythms", "Imaginary African Rain Forest", "Shake It Loose", and "Stepping To School So Cool". Kaoru Abe & Sabu ToyozumiMannyoka ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), 1978. New Copy ... $14.99
Fiercely improvised work from the duo of Kaoru Abe on soprano and sopranino saxophone – and Sabu Toyozumi on drums and percussion! On "Song For Mithue Totozumi", the pair jump right into the fray – with Abe spinning out these incredible lines with effortless ease – taking his horn into the kind of territory we're used to hearing from European saxophonists, with superb support from Toyozumi! Toyozumi is wonderful on "Song For Sakamoto Kikuyo", in three parts – a piece that builds up with this organic, almost abstract energy from the percussion – very spacious in parts, but woven together beautifully by these snaking, yet angular lines from Abe's reeds – which gain intensity as the performance moves on, building to a real sense of ferocity by the end! ECM (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $19.99
A record full of rich tones and cascadingly lyrical lines – and a set that features the wonderful pairing of John Abercrombie's guitar and the piano of Richie Beirach! Beirach seems to ground Abercrombie even more than usual – still letting John have those atmospheric qualities in his notes, but with a sense of flow and focus that we really appreciate – energy that might also come from the work of George Mraz on bass, and Peter Donald on drums. Tunes are simple and elegant, but say a hell of a lot with a little – and the album's maybe as perfect a summation of the ECM approach to guitar at its best as some of the early Pat Metheny albums. Delmark, 1972. Used ... $6.99
A tremendous step forward for the young Muhal Richard Abrams – a set that still shows his early roots in the AACM, but which also blossoms with some of his more serious compositional efforts to come! There's a sensitivity here that really stands out – even among Abrams' contemporaries – a striving for a wider range of expression – some as bold as before, some much more deeply personal and intimate. The tracks feature a shifting array of players – working alongside Abrams piano, and building up the sound in a number of different ways. Players include Wallace McMillan on flute and sax, Edwin Daugherty on sax, Richard Brown on sax, Emanuel Cranshaw on vibes, Rufus Reid on bass, and Steve McCall and Wilbur Campbell on drums. Ella Jackson provides vocals on "How Are You?" – and other titles include "Ballad For New Souls", "Things To Come From Those Now Gone", "In Retrospect", "Ballad For Old Souls", "1 & 4 Plus 2 & 7", and "March Of The Transients". Duke, Early 50s. Very Good+ ... $4.99
The only full album from Johnny Ace – a key figure in the Memphis scene of the 50s, and one of the first great casualties of rock and roll! Johnny was one of the first singers to record for the legendary Duke label, and worked in a mode that helped transform the smoother style of the west coast postwar R&B singers into a rougher, rawer mode that would pave the way for Memphis soul in years to come. And although Johnny died a tragic early death (and partially because of it), the impact of his work was tremendous, even in the few short years for which he recorded for Duke – leading to countless posthumous collections, mostly illegitimate, which often presented Johnny's work in less-than-superior conditions. This set is still the best – and features 12 tracks that Ace recorded for the Duke label. A long-overdue full length album from Ace Of Cups – a really unusual female group from the Bay Area scene of the late 60s – but one who never hit the heights of their bigger San Francisco contemporaries! The girls have this really great look on the back – kind of flower power, but with a bit more charm – a quality that comes through in the music, with is often more garagey than trippy – but which also has a way of putting forth female vocals and honest ideas that might not flourish this strongly for similar groups until the post-punk years. That approach makes the whole thing a truly timeless collection of tracks – of the sort that maybe resonate more strongly today than they did back in the 60s. A tremendous debut from Ace Spectrum – a harmony quartet who never cracked the charts as much as some of their east coast contemporaries, but who were every bit as great as the bigger names on the east coast scene! The album's got a soaring sound that's strongly influenced by Philly, but recorded in New York – a warmly compressed style that's professional and focused, and beautifully put together with arrangements from Bert DeCoteaux and production by the team of Tony Silvester and Ed Zant. We love the group the best on the mellower cuts – which have a quality that's deeply personal amidst the smoothness – but even the more upbeat tracks are plenty darn great too! Vocals are amazing – right at the height of the east coast generation that also included The Moments, Delfonics, and Stylistics – and the backings are equally wonderful, and make the album one of our favorite 70s releases from Atlantic Records. Brunswick, 1969. Very Good ... $29.99
An excellent second album by Barbara Acklin – and a perfect demonstration of her really unique Chicago soul talents! Acklin's really at the cusp of two generations here – at one level still with some of the sweetness of the earlier style of 60s girl soul, but at another full of the power and pride that was really flowing into other artists of the 70s – a balance that's a great summation of the unique way that Chicago artists could play both ends of the spectrum, and come up with something really unique in the process! The album includes the great cut "Am I The Same Girl", a loping soul groover that was all set to be a big single for Barbara – but for some reason, Brunswick held the tape back, stripped off the vocals, put on some piano, and released it as the instrumental "Soulful Strut" by Young-Holt Unlimited at the same time! Yet we still dig Barbara's version better, though – nestled here alongside other great cuts that include "Seven Days of Night", "A Raggedy Ride", "Go With Love", "Mr Sunshine", "Until You Return", and "Where Would I Go". Act One (Act 1)Act One ... LP
Spring, 1974. Sealed ... $14.99
An obscure soul group, but a great one – equally at home with a fragile harmony tune as they were with more uptempo groovers for the dancefloor! This one and only album from Act One is a perfect illustration of the best two sides of the east coast indie soul scene of the early 70s – because some tunes are spare, simple, and heartbreaking – really building off the best qualities of 60s harmony soul, but with a lot more sophistication – while others are bolder, more upbeat, and positive – really using the new studio modes of the time to send a few tunes really over the top! The mix is quite similar to Black Ivory at their best – although the album's more under-discovered treasure – and although it's the only record ever by the group, it's got a solidity that should have made them as big as any of the 70s stars on Atlantic or Philly International! Titles include "Goodbye Love", "Friends Or Lovers", "Tom the Peeper", "Party Hardy People", "I Don't Want To Know What You Do To Me", "Still Waters", "It's The Same Old Story", and "Love's Got Your Mind". ✨✧ Pepper AdamsCool Sound Of Pepper Adams ... CD
Savoy, 1957. Used ... $7.99
A fantastic album from Pepper Adams – one of his best, and an incredibly swinging session that will make you forget that he's playing a heavy baritone! At some level, the session shouldn't work so well – as it's got a rhythm group that's not particularly hard-hitting – with Hank Jones on piano, George Duvivier on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – and Adams' baritone is matched with the euphonium of Bernard McKinney, which should weigh the session down into even deeper depths. But for some reason, there was magic in the air when the album was recorded – and the group gels together perfectly, slinkily sliding through the tunes with all the coolness implied in the title, yet with a deep deep dose of Detroit soul from Adams and McKinney. Tracks are all nice and long, and titles include "Bloos Blooze Blues", "Skippy", and "Like What Is This?" CD

Habibi Funk, 1973. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
Monstrous funk from Morocco – unreleased material recorded in 1973, with a sound that should have revolutionized North Africa at the time! The group works here in a really raw blend of heavy percussion and riffing guitar – produced with lots of edge and echo, and delivered with the spirited vibe you'd expect from the ensemble's appearance on the cover! There's plenty of criss-crossing between the lead and chorus vocals on the set – but the guitar gets plenty of space too, and has this really sharp quality that's clearly informed by psych, but funkier overall – and very different than any work of the sort from farther down the continent. Drums are super-heavy, and the basslines match as well – on titles that include "Albaki", "Taali", "Chamaa", "Aflana", "Kaddaba", "Moulate Salef", and "Al Hadaoui". CD

Cannonball AdderleyAlabama/Africa (Alabama Concerto/African Waltz) ... LP
Riverside, 1958. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $11.99
2 fantastic albums, not really in the same bag, but combined for reissue that still works nicely as a set. The first LP, John Benson Brooks' Alabama Concerto was groundbreaking work – not only for Cannonball, but for the jazz concerto format, used to strong effect here in this extended modernist composition. The album's based on a number of historical and mythical southern themes – which keeps it from swinging hard all the way through, the work of Adderley and Art Farmer on the solo sections really opens up the piece and gives it a deep sense of soul. Other players include Barry Galbraith on guitar, Milt Hinton on bass, and Brooks on drums – and themes include "The Loop", "Trampin", "Little John Shoes", "Milord's Calling", and "Rufus Playboy". African Waltz changes up the format entirely, with Adderley's alto fronting a large group conducted by Ernie Wilkins, and featuring a host of hip players like Melba Liston, Oliver Nelson, Jerome Richardson, Ray Barretto, Sam Jones, and Wynton Kelly. The title track is a beautiful reading of Galt MacDermott's "African Waltz" – and other tracks include "Blue Brass Groove", "Something Different", "The Uptown", and "Letter From Home". Wilkins outdoes himself on this one, really providing some strong swinging arrangements that work well with the complicated groove of the project – and in a way, the record feels more like Randy Weston or Melba Liston's at the helm. ✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyBig Man ... LP
Fantasy, 1975. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $9.99
One of the last albums ever issued by the great Cannonball Adderley – and one of the most ambitious, too! The set's a concept album – done in close collaboration with David Axelrod, in a similar spirit to some of Cannon's projects on the zodiac or the bible – but this time turned towards the legend of John Henry! The set's got some fuller orchestrations than some of the others – a bit of strings and a chorus, which sometimes gives the record the feel of a blacksploitation album, sometimes more of a Melvin Van Peebles project. Lead vocals are by Joe Williams, Randy Crawford, and Robert Guillaume – and the core combo features work from Cannonball on alto sax, Dawili Gonga on keyboards, Airto on percussion, and George Bohannon on trombone – on titles that include "Hundred an One Year", "Poundin", "The Steamdrill", "New Star Risin", "On His Bones", "Anybody Need A Big Man", "The Broomstick Song", and "Ten Mile Of Mountain". Cannonball AdderleyCannonball & Coltrane (aka Cannonball In Chicago) ... CD
Limelight/EmArcy, 1959. Used ... $5.99
A great session from 1959 – one that features John Coltrane playing with the Adderley group, recorded in Chicago when they were stopping through the city with Miles Davis' combo at the time! In fact, since the rhythm section includes Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb – and since Coltrane's sitting in with Cannon – the album's essentially a Kind Of Blue-era Miles album, recorded without Miles on trumpet, and grooving in a slightly more soul-based Adderley mode. Given the presence of Coltrane, there's a bit less of the gutbuckety soul jazz that Cannon was cutting in his own Quintet – but that's more than ok with us, as the Coltrane solos more than make up for that difference! The set's got 2 great originals by Coltrane – "The Sleeper" and "Grand Central" – plus the cuts "Wabash" and "Limehouse Blues". CD

Cannonball AdderleyCannonball Adderley & The Poll Winners (Landmark) ... LP
Riverside, 1960. Sealed ... $6.99
Cannon's left his usual soul jazz combo for this album – and he's recording on the west coast with an all-star group that includes Wes Montgomery on guitar, Victor Feldman on vibes and piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. The sound's a bit different than usual – with a strong focus on the solos of the big stars, and less on the tight grooving of the group – but that doesn't stop it from being a great set, and Cannon blows in a way that reminds us of his classic Mercury sides. Titles include "The Chant", "Azule Serape", "Never Will I Marry", and "Au Prive". LP, Vinyl record album

Cannonball AdderleyCannonball Adderley Live! ... LP
Capitol, 1964. Near Mint- ... $13.99
Cannonball Adderley with David Axelrod production – a combination that couldn't miss back in the 60s! In keeping with the success of the Mercy Mercy Mercy album done with Axelrod, Capitol did everything they could to catch Cannonball in a live setting – a great move, given the open, soulful energy his group had in the format – crowd-pleasing, but always plenty darn creative too! Added to the mix here is some nice production by David Axelrod, capturing all the right moments in all the right ways – especially when Joe Zawinul steps up to take some sweet solos on the keys – and the great Charles Lloyd serves up some mighty nice work on flute and tenor sax. Other players include Nat Adderley on cornet, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – and titles include "The Song My Lady Sings", "Little Boy With The Sad Eyes", "Work Song", and "Sweet Georgia Bright". ✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyCannonball Adderley Quintet In San Francisco ... LP
Riverside, 1959. Sealed ... $19.99
One of the greatest Cannonball Adderley albums from the Riverside years – a completely smoking live date recorded in San Francisco, often with long tracks that really let the group open up and do their thing! The lineup here is that classic one that first grabbed attention – the group with brother Nat on cornet, Sam Jones on bass, Louis Hayes on drums – and a young Bobby Timmons on piano, really cooking things up with tremendous drive, energy, and a sense of the groove! Titles include a great workout on Timmons' classic "This Here", plus originals "You Got It" and Spontaneous Combustion", and a great version of "Hi Fly". Soul jazz at its best, by one of the groups who gave the genre its name in the first place! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyCannonball Adderley's Fiddler On The Roof ... LP
Capitol, Mid 60s. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
Once again, Cannon proves that it's not the song, it's the singer! This set of tunes from the hit musical Fiddler On The Roof should be schmaltzy – but thanks to the quality of the group (a great sextet with Nat Adderley, Charles Lloyd, Joe Zawinul, Sam Jones, and Louis Hayes), and thanks to some hip production from David Axelrod, the album really sparkles! The tones of Cannon and Lloyd are great together – and the make the best songs sound like strange Eastern-tinged jazz numbers. Tunes include "To Life", "Fiddler On The Roof", "Cajvalach", "Sewing Machine", "Matchmaker", and "Now I Have Everything". LP, Vinyl record album

Cannonball AdderleyCannonball's Sharpshooters (bonus tracks) ... CD
American Jazz Classics, 1958. Used ... $6.99
A set that's right on target, right from the start – and one that has the young Cannonball Adderley really coming into his groove! The set's a lot more soul jazz-oriented than some of Cannon's records from a few years before – played by a rock-solid group that includes brother Nat Adderley on cornet, Junior Mance on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – hitting a groove that's got plenty of nascent elements of that Cannonball sound that would virtually take over jazz in the 60s! Yet there's also a nicely different vibe going on here too – a bit less structure, and a looser approach to the mode – spun out with some modern moments too, on titles that include "Straight No Chaser", "Jubilation", "Our Delight", "Fuller Bop Man", and "Stay On It". As a bonus, the CD also includes tracks from Machito's Kenya, featuring Cannonball! CD

✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyCountry Preacher – Live At Operation Breadbasket ... LP
Capitol, 1969. Very Good Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A totally great set by Cannonball Adderley – one of his funkiest albums ever, recorded live at Operation Breadbasket under the supervision of Jesse Jackson, and a session in which the band is cooking a lot more than on some of their other albums from the time! The set grooves hard with some tight electric piano from Joe Zawinul – amazing snakey lines that not only set the tone for the whole record, but which really make for a strong evolution from the Mercy Mercy Mercy era of the group a few years before. Cannon's alto and soprano work are beautiful – a masterpiece of soul jazz expression – as is the cornet from brother Nat – and the group's completed by bassist Walter Booker and drummer Roy McCurdy. The album's a bucketful of great jazzy sample tunes – and tracks include "Walk Tall", "Country Preacher", "Hummin", and the extended "Afro-Spanish Omlet". LP, Vinyl record album

One of Cannonball Adderley's late funky sessions for Fantasy – and a record that still features some mighty heavy production from David Axelrod! The album's got that core groove that Axe and Cannon first crafted together at Capitol in the 60s – but the sound here has some definite 70s touches too – a bit more emphasis on electric piano, played here by Hal Galper – and rhythms that are even funkier than before! Other players include Nat Adderley on cornet, Walter Booker on bass, Roy McCurdy on drums, and King Errison on percussion – and titles include the excellent "Snakin' the Grass", which is just ripe for samplin', plus some other good grooves like "Second Son", "Saudade", "Five Of A Kind", and "Inside Straight". Fantasy, 1975. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... $6.99
Sweet funky 70s work from Cannonball Adderley – a record that has him revisiting older tunes from his early soul jazz years – but in ways that give them a whole new electric vibe overall! The album's actually Cannonball's last full studio set, but it's also one of his greatest too – a very hip little record that features arrangements that are slightly bigger than before – almost a CTI sort of mode, with a similar CTI sense of space, sound, and timing! There's some great keyboards on the set – courtesy of George Duke and Mike Wolff – and other players include Nat Adderley on cornet, Airto on percussion, Sam Jones and Walter Booker on bass, and Louis Hayes and Roy McCurdy on drums. The keyboards lead off most numbers, but they're followed strongly by Cannon and Nat – both of whom open up wonderfully in the magical setting of the record! Titles include great new takes on "Sack O Woe", "Work Song", "Jive Samba", "74 Miles Away", "Walk Tall/Mercy Mercy Mercy", "Country Preacher", "Domination", and "This Here" – plus "Hi Fly" and "Hamba Nami". Cannonball AdderleyPortrait Of Cannonball ... LP
Riverside, 1958. Very Good- ... $9.99
A jazzy portrait of Cannonball Adderley in his early soul jazz prime – oddly one that doesn't feature his regular quintet lineup, but which more than makes up for that lack with a batch of players that includes Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Bill Evans on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums! Given the personnel, the record's almost kind of a transition from Cannon's brief time with Miles Davis into his tighter more soul-inflected group to come – and Evans' piano provides an especially spacious sensibility here, one that marks the time spent with Miles nicely. Titles include "Nardis", "A Little Taste", "Minority", and "Blue Funk". LP, Vinyl record album

Fantastic work from the massive electric years of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet – one of the group's last records to feature the keyboards of Joe Zawinul – and also one of the heaviest from the time! The set's a double-length gem that presents the group in an open live setting – one that really displays the full charm of their approach at the time, and that wonderfully crowd-winning mode that made Cannon a key act at this time for rock and soul audiences too! Adderley raps a bit at key points, and brings some righteous energy to the concert – while the rest of the group follow up with performances that really send the whole thing home – Nat Adderley on cornet, Zawinul on Fender Rhodes and piano, Walter Booker on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums. Cannon plays some soprano sax, in addition to his familiar alto – and titles include "Alto Sex", "Lonesome Stranger", "Wild Cat Pee", "Soul Virgo", "Painted Desert", "Directions", "Pra Dizer Adeus", "Rumplestiltskin", "Price You Got To Pay To Be Free", "Esquisition", "Get Up Off Your Knees", "Down In Black Bottom", and "The Scene". A landmark album – even if it was the only session that Cannonball Adderley ever cut for Blue Note! The album was recorded at a time when Adderley was working with Miles Davis – and as such, the session features a group that includes Miles, blowing in a cool tone that's a perfect offset to Cannonball's more soulful style. The rest of the group includes Hank Jones, Sam Jones, and Art Blakey – and like John Coltrane's Blue Train, the record's more of an "special session" than the usual Blue Note album, but the strength of the players make it one of the more memorable records of its day! Titles include "Somethin' Else", "One For Daddy-O", and a nice moody take on "Dancing In The Dark". Includes bonus track "Alison's Uncle". CD

One of the coolest, baddest, funkiest albums Cannonball Adderley ever recorded – a massive suite of tunes based on the signs of the Zodiac, produced to perfection by David Axelrod, and featuring some hip recitations from the mighty Rick Holmes! The double-length set is completely compelling all the way through – a darkly brooding batch of funky jazz that shows a strong Miles Davis electric influence at points, thanks to Nat Adderley's spacey trumpet lines, Mike Deasy's trippy guitar, and George Duke's excellent keyboards! Other tracks are a bit more laidback, fitting the mood of their respective signs – and overall, the whole thing slips and slides wonderfully from cut to cut – taking you through the star signs with a really righteous, soulful approach. Great live work from the Cannonball Adderley Quintet – recorded during a time when the group's star was really rising on Capitol Records, but at a level that's got the more open-ended, freely-blown style of their classic concert dates for Riverside! The material here was all recorded for radio in Seattle, and the fidelity is excellent – sounds that are sharp as any of the group's key live albums of the period – with some very hip announcements between a few of the tracks! And unlike some radio live issues on the market, this one is nice and long – with eight long tracks that really open up – full of magical moments from Cannonball on alto, Nat Adderley on cornet, Joe Zawinul on piano, Victor Gaskin on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums. Titles include "Sticks", "Big P", "The Girl Next Door", "Back Home Blues", "Hippodelphia", "74 Miles Away", "Morning Of The Carnival", and Somewhere". CD

An album that definitely lives up to its title – given the great change and evolution in the style of Cannonball Adderley's music – definitely pointed towards the soul jazz fame to come in the 60s! The group here has Adderley's alto in the company of some all-stars who may not be his regular group, but who definitely help keep the whole thing at a top-shelf level throughout – a quintet that features Milt Jackson on vibes, Wynton Kelly on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Art Blakey on drums. There's still a few echoes of Cannon's earlier bop recordings, but the sound is also moving towards the new modes to come – especially on the classic title cut "Things Are Getting Better". Cannonball AdderleyWhy Am I Treated So Bad? ... LP
Capitol, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $9.99
If you ever needed a key example of the genius of Cannonball on Capitol Records, this tight little set may well be it! The record's got all the best elements of a Cannon classic firmly in place – production by David Axelrod, electric piano by Joe Zawinul, and some tremendously soulful work from Cannon and Nat Adderley on their respective horns – all presented with a sense of relaxed tightness (if we can use such a phrase) that's jaw-droppingly brilliant all the way through! Cannon speaks a bit and pushes the band into action with charisma and warmth caught nicely by Axelrod's recording – and the band grooves on long, snakey tunes that mix equal parts funk and soul jazz together, coming up with the quintessential Adderley groove on nearly every number!
