99 Records (Germany), 1994. Used ... $13.99
Their crazy first album, though they'd contributed a track here and there to compilations, including some early MoWax stuff. Lots of weird dubby tracks and insane instrumentals, with clattering percussion and the odd moogy burp. Though their second LP ended up being a bit of a let down, this one's pretty great, right down to the cover. Includes "Big Ship Whopper", "Floppy Loot Stomp", "Cosmic Dragon Dub (rmx)", "Apes-Ma" and "Monkey Monarchy". CD

99 Records (Germany), 1993. Used ... $4.99
Far more than just the first album by the group Mondo Grosso – and more of an assortment of other work from the same Japanese scene – in the manner of the first Kyoto Jazz Massive LP! The album features 3 key tracks by Mondo Grosso – "Anger", "Souffles H", and "Vibe PM" – plus a variety of other work that follows in that strong mid 90s Japanese take on the acid jazz sound of the UK. Other titles include "High Max" by Double Down, "Dazzling" by Secret Vibes, "Carnival of Colors" by Bahia Sunsets, and "Day Dreamin'" by Brenda. CD

99 Records (Germany), 1995. Used ... $0.99
Nice record by this great (and overlooked) combo that came out during a flurry of jazz funk work from Japan during the mid 90s. The band's got a style that mixes hip hop samples and beats with funky trumpet riffing, plus other instrumental samples – and their style is nicely stripped-down, with none of the nonsense that might turn up on an American record from the time. Nice and jazzy – with a very fresh sound. Titles include "Room 701", "Hide Out", "Fish Dance", "Night Walk", and "Blue Not Blue". CD

Don BryantYou Make Me Feel ... CD
Fat Possum, 2020. New Copy ... $9.99 15.99
The mighty Don Bryant never got the chance to record much back in the day – save for one fantastic album and a set of singles on Hi Records – but he's really returned to form lately, and gets the chance to show the world his Memphis soul pedigree in all of its glory! Scott Bomar produced the set, plays bass, and gives the record some of those funky soul styles that made his work with the Bo-Keys so great – in a group that's heavy on organ lines and riffing guitars, and which also features backup singers behind Don on a number of the tracks. Yet the whole thing is clearly Don's showcase – with great vocals on titles that include "Your Love Is Too Late", "99 Pounds", "Is It Over", "Your Love Is To Blame", "I'll Go Crazy", "Cracked Up Over You", and "Walk All Over God's Heaven". Grandmother's FunckPlease Baby Please Baby Baby Baby Please ... CD
Greyboy, 1996. Used ... $1.99
An obscure bit of jazzy funk from the Swiss scene – the only album we've ever seen from Grandmother's Funck – on Greyboy Records! The album was recorded in Switzerland in '96, and there's timeless sound and a laidback approach of funk – with soul jazz awareness that we don't always hear in the later funk revivalists! The 10 tracks are a mix instrumentals and a few vocal cuts – loads of Rhodes and Hammond, funky drums & percussion, horns that roll from jazzy to Afro funk influences, longish passages and tighter moments! Nice stuff! Titles include "Call Me", "When She Said Goodbye Forever (I Was Brushing My Teeth)", "Julio's Bounce", "I Can Hear Your Body Talk", "Ain't No Makin Whoopee Anymore", "Blues For Mr Harris", "Hotel 99", "I Don't Forget My Horn", "Dancing In The Funkshine" and "Work Is Done". A really moody record from the Les Disques Du Crepuscule label – a short set, and one that's full of plenty of experimental moments – maybe the sort of record that would have been more at home on Factory Records or 99! There's certainly some of the creative percussion you'd hear on the later label – often abstracted with processing, and mixed with electric drums too – in this heavy mix of deep bass, cold keyboards, and some very mysterious vocals! Titles include "Motiv", "Cherish", "Night After Night", "Sense Of Male", and "Infraton". LP, Vinyl record album

Peter Ludemann & Pit TrojaNow Generation – Percussive Underscores ... LP
Coloursound Library/Be With (UK), 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
Percussive underscores, but for the now generation – specifically the one that wants a bit more electronics in their percussion – as most of the set seems to focus more on electric drum styles than the acoustic instruments on the cover! That's hardly a problem, though – as the set's a great one from the time when sound library styles were getting a lot more lean – and the instrumentals here would fit nicely amidst an early 80s dancefloor, especially one that was borrowing some of the funky currents from global regions, and moving them into a more mainstream clubby vibe – ala 99 Records or Ze. There's still a bit of acoustic percussion too – although that might be sampled as well – and titles include "African Nightclub", "The Now Generation", "Panama", "Inorganic Matter", "Mechanical Heart", and "Nepal Trek". Sun RaAstro Black (2018 Record Store Day Release) ... CD
Impulse/Modern Harmonic, 1973. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
One of the darkest Sun Ra albums of the early 70s – and a set that's also a bit unusual in his catalog as well! The album was issued during Ra's run with Impulse Records – a period that mostly saw the label reissue previous records from the Saturn catalog – save for a rare few like this one, which was an unusual all-new batch of material for Impulse! Because of that, it's been a bit overlooked in later years – maybe missed as less authentic, but actually some of the most striking sounds that Ra created at the time! There's a very strong tension here between electric and acoustic elements – not in the usual fusion-based way, but instead with this vibe that often has the electric instruments providing darker areas of sound, while the woodwinds and percussion have a way of humanizing the proceedings. June Tyson's also at her moodiest on the title track, "Astro Black" – and other titles include "Hidden Spheres", "Discipline 99", and the long improvisation "Cosmo Fire". CD

✨✧ Bruce SpringsteenNebraska ... LP
Columbia, 1982. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The starkest, sparest ever by Bruce Springsteen – sans accompaniment for the most part, having famously opted to release the haunting guitar, voice and harmonica demos as the actual album – and it's devastatingly strong to this day! The hallmark facet is that it's a largely solo acoustic record, the the great thing about that is how distinctively Springsteen sounding it is – with the all the earnestness of his more anthemic material, and more – just done with a sometimes somber, always intimate approach. One of those records that deserves all of the loft praise! Includes "Nebraska", "Atlantic City", "Mansion On The Hill", "Johnny 99", "State Trooper", "Used Cars", "Open All Night", "My Father's House" and "Reason To Believe". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ann PeeblesStraight From The Heart ... CD
Hi Records/Fat Possum, 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Ann Peebles sings straight from the heart on this classic early set for Hi Records – a record that's to female vocals what Al Green's work of the time meant to male soul! As with Green's Hi Records of the time, Willie Mitchell is firmly in charge of production and backings – working with that warmly glowing Memphis soul style that carved whole new territory in soul music for the 70s – a maturing and mellowing of earlier southern modes, in a way that helps Peebles hit some fresh and uncliched sounds with her vocals. At a time when so many other singers were trying to copy Aretha, Ann's approach is mighty fresh – as you'll hear on tracks that include "I Take What I Want", "Slipped Tripped & Fell In Love", "What You Laid On Me", "Trouble Heartaches & Sadness", "99 Pounds", "I've Been There Before", and "Somebody's On Your Case". ✨✧ Leon SpencerBad Walking Woman ... LP
Prestige, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Supremely heavy work from organist Leon Spencer – one of his classic jazz funk sessions for Prestige Records, and a record that shows him opening up his sound a bit more than before! The album has Spencer working in a few different lineups – some with small groups that feature Melvin Sparks on guitar and Idris Muhammad on drums – others with some slightly larger instrumentation and even a bit of strings, used in a sophisticatedly soulful style that reminds us a bit of CTI or Kudu backings of the time! Billy Ver Planck handles the larger arrangements, but even on these Leon's organ is right out front in the mix – really dominating the tunes, and soaring over the top with a newly fluid style that reminds us of Charles Earland at his own best during this time. Titles include the killer funky title cut – "Bad Walking Woman" – plus "When My Love Has Gone", "In Search Of Love", "Down On Dowling Street", "Hip Shaker", and "Bad Walking Woman". Cool cover, too, with a huge collage of photos of the backsides of exactly 99 "bad walking women"! LP, Vinyl record album

Sinecure/Now Again, 1960s/1970s/1980s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $7.99 17.98
An incredible companion to the book Enjoy The Experience – and like that volume, a set that's filled with gems from the obscure sides of the American recording industry – vanity and privately pressed records that are plenty darn groovy, and pretty darn funky in all the right spots! The book is a painstakingly researched collection – and this soundtrack is just as carefully put together – with a great range of styles – heavily steeped in freaky funk, upbeat boogie, acid folk, offbeat psych, and trippy jazz! The range of sounds is really wonderful – with a feel that's somewhere between a Trunk Records or Finders Keepers compilation – and titles include "Intro (Excerpt)" by The Muzzy Band, "Spacing Out" by The Invaders, Diska Limba Man" by Medico Doktor Vibes, "Music Slave" by Jade, "White Panther" by Arcesia, "Never Come Back" by Boa, "ESP Switch" by Michael Farneti, "6.4 = Makeout" by Gary Wilson, "Just To Say Goodbye" by Russ Saul, "Cadillac Woman" by Stephen David Heitkotter, "Piledriver" by Dennis The Fox, "Old Time Feeling" by Circuit Rider, and "666" by Ray Torske. VariousSoul Love Now – The Black Fire Records Story 1975 to 1993 ... CD
Strut (UK), Late 70s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
A great look at one of our favorite record labels of all time – a company that was one of the first we ever worked together with, back when we started Dusty Groove – and whose music has been a huge inspiration to us for decades! Black Fire is a really special record label from the DC area – not just a jazz imprint, but more of an artistic collective – maybe similar to what Tribe Records was to the Detroit scene of the 70s, but also more open to more soulful sounds too – which is what really makes so many of these tracks so great – as they have a perfect balance between jazz, funk, and soul – kind of that through-line that the Chicago scene had as things moved from Sun Ra, to Phil Cohran, on to the Pharoahs and Earth Wind & Fire! That trajectory is key here – as many of the players were rooted in more avant jazz styles, but were also eager to communicate their message in ways that were more universal – which is why the music here has such lasting appeal over the years – as it's filled with messages of love and peace, life and pride – with an intensity that maybe makes these tracks every bit as important now as when they were first recorded. The best-known group on the set is Oneness Of Juju, but there's work from the whole spectrum of Black Fire artists – tracks that include "Look At The People" by Wayne Davis, "Doin The Carvin For Thabo" by Lon Moshe, "African Rhythms (live 1975)" by Oneness Of Juju, "Children Of Tomorrow's Dreams" by Theatre West, "People" by Experience Unlimited, "Follow Me" by Okyerema Asante, "Third House" by Southern Energy Ensemble, and "Drummers From Ibadan" by Byard Lancaster. Almighty & Insane Books, 2020. New Copy ... $16.99 20.00
The secret history of Chicago house music – a side of the scene that's even more obscure than its many rare records or long-departed clubs! The book is a fantastic follow up to the first volume – and like that one, features rare flyers, posters, and ads for some of the underground Chicago house music events and venues – some of them legitimate entertainment venues, but others more obscure hole-in-the-wall places – including some churches that were surprising hosts to house music events back in the day! The book has no text, but features full color reproductions of dozens of flyers and posters – most of them very detailed and vibrant, with loads of information on obscure artists, DJs, and other forces helping to make house music happen – often emblazoned with addresses that will come as a real surprise if you only know the Chicago of the 21st Century! A beautiful book – and one that makes us proud to call Chicago our home. Book

Mark MurphyJazz Singer – Anthology – The Muse Years 1972 to 1991 ... LP
Muse/Soul Brother (UK), 1970s/1980s. New Copy 2LP ... $18.99
A killer collection of work from one of the hippest jazz singers of all time – captured here at a point when he was really opening up into some fresh, unique territory of his own! Mark Murphy first began recording in the mid 50s for Decca, and had a run of other records in the 60s for Capitol, Fontana, and other labels – but by the time he hit Muse Records in the 70s, he was really open to new ideas – and able to do far more than just the simple singing of a tune! Instead, he'd worked his voice into a mode that was more like an instrument overall – able to run free with brilliant solo passages, and inflect the lyrics in ways that even the great singers of years before might never have dreamed of! And at Muse, he got excellent support and instrumental backing – always hip combos, and the freedom to create the sort of special albums that still make his records for the label a real high point in the development of jazz vocals. These are sides that went onto inform generations of singers – from Kurt Elling, to Gregory Porter, and so many others – and this well-chosen selection of songs is completely sublime. Titles include "On The Red Clay", "Stolen Moments", "Effendi", "Naima", "Maiden Voyage", "Lookin For Another Pure Love", "Waters Of March", "Come & Get Me", "Be-Bop Lives", "Dingwalls", "Cantaloupe Island", "Sly", "Empty Faces", and "Two Kites". The complete run of music by The Primitives – their early singles, ful albums, and lots of bonus material – plus BBC sessions too! CD1 features The Lazy Years – early work from The Primitives – a selection of tracks from early singles they recorded for the Lazy label, before moving onto even bigger fame at a major label! We've always liked this work by the group the best – as it's nice and raw, with a good mix of muddy production, guitar fuzz, and darkly echoey vocals – very much a product of the same Creation Records influences that gave the world Jesus & Mary Chain. Titles include "She Don't Need You", "Thru The Flowers", "Where The Wind Blows", "Stop Killing Me", "Buzz Buzz Buzz", "Everything's Shining Bright", "Shadow", "Across My Shoulder", and "She Don't Need You". CDs 2, 3, and 4 feature the full albums Lovely, Pure, and Galore – all with lots of bonus tracks – and CD5 features 26 more tracks from BBC sessions recorded during the early Lazy Years, 1986 and 1987. Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s/1980s/1990s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
A big overview collection of work from the key years of reedman David Sanborn – a player who certainly knew how to hit the heights with the sales of his records, but also had a surprisingly strong, rich career over the years! If you only think of Sanborn as a smooth jazz pioneer, then you'll find plenty to open up your mind here – as David first recorded as a solo act for Warner Brothers at a time when he was making key contributions to sessions for other artists, then found ways to consistently stay ahead of the fusion and electric jazz mainstream – to the point where in the later recordings here, he's almost back to basics in a really surprising way! As with other great anthology collections on this label, there's a really strong track selection – one that not only features key album tracks, but singles and even a few live cuts too – a really well-chosen batch of 46 tunes that include "Believer (12" mix)", "Love & Happiness (live)", "High Roller", "Flight", "Heba", "Short Visit", "This Masquerade", "Lesly Ann (radio)", "Smile (live)", "Infant Eyes", "Naked Moon", "Brother Ray", "Imogene", "Come To Me Nina", "Lotus Blossom (live)", "Daydreaming", "Same Girl", "Bang Bang (single)", "Summer", "I Do It For Your Love", "The Water Is Wide", "Got To Give It Up (rmx edit)", "Slam (7" version)", and "Duck Ankles". A heavy package of work from the legendary Skyy – the funky club combo headed by Randy Muller after his work with BT Express and Brass Construction! With Skyy, Muller honed his groove even more than before – creating a really tight focus on bass-heavy bottoms, and focusing all instruments in the group into a solidly soaring sound that showed that funk was alive and well on the dancefloor – even well beyond the disco years – as you'll hear in this collection of work that not only includes Salsoul Records classics by Skyy, but also later work for Capitol and Warner too. The 2CD set really runs the gamut of Skyy sounds – and links their disco material with some great later 80s grooves too – on titles that include "The Groove Is Bad", "First Time Around (12" mix)", "Call Me", "Let's Celebrate (12" mix)", "Real Love", "Up & Over", "Start Of A Romance", "Givin It To You (12" special mix)", "Bad Boy (12" version)", "When You Touch Me", "Get Into The Beat", "Movin Violation", "Let Love Shine (12" version)", "You Got Me Up", "Love Plane", "Skyyzoo (12" mix)", "Fallin In Love Again", "Disco Dancin", and "Superlove". An amazing record from pianist Horace Tapscott – maybe one of his most ambitious projects ever, and a set that stands head and shoulders next to his classic work for the Nimbus label! As with some of those records, this set features his large Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra – performing live at LACMA in 1998, and also augmented by a vocal choir at times – working with a sense of pride and power that's very much in the best 70s spiritual jazz mode! We honestly didn't know that Tapscott had continued the group this far into the 90s – we've only heard them on record up through the early 80s – and the lineup really represents the maturing vision of the music, with some especially great work from Tapscott on piano, Phil Ranelin on trombone, and Michael Session on soprano, alto, and tenor – plus lead vocals from the mighty Dwight Trible. A return to greatness for the legendary Tribe Records scene in Detroit – an underground movement that gave us some spiritual jazz classics in the 70s – then kept on making wonderful music at an even more underground level as the years went on! This set is a collection of work from three rare recordings issued during that time – all on CD only, and representing a maybe even more obscure side of this legacy than the Tribe albums of the 70s! First up is trombonist Phil Ranelin – heading up a group that includes Wendell Harrison on tenor and Marcus Belgrave on trumpet – two key Tribe partners from the early years – really stretching out on the titles "He The One We All Knew" and "Freddie's Groove", both recorded in 1990. Next is material from a 1995 performance led by pianist Harold McKinney – a set that's got an incredible depth of imagination and soul, almost as much as Harold McKinney's work of years back! The group is a wonderfully hip one – with former Tribe artists Wendell Harrison on tenor and clarinet and Marcus Belgrave on trumpet – plus additional players who include Kiane Zawadi on trombone, Reggie Workman on bass, Francisco Mora on percussion, and Jimmy Owens on trumpet. There's a bit of vocals, but never that much – and most tracks are long and open – freely exploratory, but never too far out or avant-styled – just soulful and spiritual, in the true Tribe Records tradition! Titles include "Wide & Blue", "The Slave Ship Enterprise", "Juba", "Libra Ahora", and "Conjure Man". Last is a set of tracks recorded in 2014 by keyboardist Pamela Wise – a record that really carries forward the Tribe Records spirit from the 70s! The overall approach is a bit more contemporary, but the set's still got all the best feel of a classic indie album from the underground – played and penned by Wise in close collaboration with reedman Wendell Harrison, a frequent partner of Pamela's on a variety of projects, and one of the driving forces of Tribe back in the day! Wise plays both acoustic and electric keyboards, and sometimes sings just slightly – although most of the album is instrumental – and in addition to Harrison's work on tenor and bass clarinet, the album features trumpet, guitar, and lots of percussion. Titles include "Ode To Black Mothers", "Hometown", and "Marcus Garvey". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Iggy & The StoogesRaw Power (2LP with David Bowie original 1973 mix and Iggy Pop 1997 mix) ... LP
Columbia, 1973. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the wildest records of the early 70s – and it's still pretty darn hard to argue with the power of this one – even if the meddling of the producers is nearly as legendary as the album itself! There's still such a manic energy to the original release mix – one that clearly inspired, if not altogether gave birth to the punk scene – and makes the album one of those quintessential examples of great art being made under compromising circumstances. Fierceness personified! Includes classics like "Search & Destroy", "Death Trip", "Gimme Danger", "Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell (aka Hard To Beat)", "Raw Power", "Shake Appeal", and "Death Trip". We're in that rare camp that finds both Bowie's original mix AND Iggy's noisy-as-hell, paint-peeler of a mix from the late 90s entirely essential – and the latter appears here on vinyl for the first time! This completely incredible 2012 vinyl edition includes both mixes in a 2LP set with 16 page booklet. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousSpiritual Jazz 9 – Blue Notes – Part 2 – Modal, Esoteric & Deep Jazz From The Vaults Of Blue Note Records 1962 to 1976 ... LP
Jazzman (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great look at a sometimes-forgotten side of the legendary Blue Note Records label – the company's strong wave of spiritual jazz material recorded during the 60s and early 70s – extremely fine music that's often eclipsed next to the company's better-known hardbop and funky jazz! As the 60s moved on, Blue Note became an even more open-minded label than before – and not only gave some of its key players the chance to stretch out and really spread their wings – but also brought some younger talents into the mix, who really expanded the vision of the Blue Note sound. Some of the tracks here are from the middle of the decade – and reflect more of the growing interest in modal jazz spurred on by Coltrane, Miles Davis, and others – while some of the later tracks are surprisingly righteous, sometimes political moments from players who would have sounded very different just a few years before. The package is done with the same amazing care and fantastic set list as previous Spiritual Jazz collections from Jazzman – and titles on this second volume include "El Barrio" by Joe Henderson, "Plight" by Jackie McLean, "Gichi" by Booker Ervin, "Igbesi Aiye" by Solomon Ilori, "Blue Spirits" by Freddie Hubbard, "Cristo Redentor" by Duke Pearson, "The Morning After" by Hank Mobley, "Indian Song" by Wayne Shorter, and "Malaguena" by Pete LaRoca. Arista/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 12CD ... Out Of Stock
A huge run of music from the legendary Dionne Warwick – all of it very different than her early work with Burt Bacharach, and brought together as a strong testament to her ability to change and grow over the years! Although Dionne started as a sweeter singer in the 60s, and had a few great Warner Brothers moments during the 70s – she really reemerged strongly on Arista at the end of that decade – thanks to strong help from a label that really knew what to do with a top-shelf female singer, and help them move past some of the pop and disco pitfalls that brought down some of their contemporaries in the decade! Warwick really returned to the American consciousness with these records, then kept on growing and maturing – really able to shift through a range of styles as the 80s moved into the 90s, even ending up with a bit of jazz in the mix – as you'll hear on this long run of records. The box set features twelve full albums, a great value for the price – records that include Dionne, No Night So Long, Hot Live & Otherwise, Friends In Love, Heartbreaker, How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye, Finder Of Lost Loves, Friends, Reservations For Two, Sings Cole Porter, Friends Can Be Lovers, and Aquarela Do Brasil. Inevitable/Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A great little package that finally gives the Liverpool scene its due – especially during a time when many other English cities are credited with helping to shape the sound of modern music! Late 70s Liverpool had little going on since the Beatles and Brit Invasion groups – but the rise of Inevitable Records gave the city a great voice to challenge the other punk and post-punk material of the time – and stood as an important stepping stone for a number of acts who went on to much bigger labels during the 80s! This package brings together all the a- and b-sides of Inevitable, along with replicas of all their cool 45rpm sleeves – important, as the label mostly just issued 7" singles – but with a force that has become legendary over the years. The package features 2CDs that bring together these singles, by groups who include Wah Heat, Dead Or Alive, Modern Eon, Nightmares On Wax, China Crisis, It's Immaterial, Faction, Freeze Frame, The Light, Builders, Box Of Toys, and Venus Adore – plus a full extra CD of Peel Session material from the early 80s by some of the biggest groups in the set! Strut (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
A tremendous return to form for reedman Idris Ackamoor and his Pyramids group – and a record that we love every bit as much as his classic material from the 70s! There's a power, righteousness, and urgency to this album that we haven't heard from Ackamoor in years – very much the kind of material that's both a message and a medicine for the planet – of the sort that first inspired Ackamoor's generation in the 70s – and which is rarely carried off in a contemporary context this well! Idris plays tenor, but also delivers some surprisingly wonderful vocals and a few very powerful spoken parts too – and the rest of the lineup features Margaux Simmons on flute, Bobby Cobb on guitar, Ruben Ramos Medina on bass, Jack Yglesies on percussion, Sandra Poindexter on viola and violin, and Giole Pagliaccia on drums. The vibe here is like the vintage Black Fire Records label at its best – and titles include "Salvation", "Theme For Cecil", "When Will I See You Again", "Shaman", "Tango Of Love", "Dogon Mysteries", and "The Last Slave Ship". Rare work from Brazilian bossa nova legend Johnny Alf – recorded in his later years, but with a stripped-down sound that makes the whole thing sound pretty darn classic overall! Half the set is studio material, half is recorded live – and all the tracks were never issued at the time, which makes the whole thing a great discovery of unreleased gems that provide a strong addition to Johnny's catalog of famous records! Alf plays piano, and occasionally sings a bit – and both recordings features bass, drums, and guitar – plus some nice use of sax and flute – on titles that include "Bar Da Praia", "Ceu E Mar", "Plexus/Rapaz De Bem", "Meiga Presenca", "Sintonia", "Matinal", "E Ai", "Convite", and "Quero Amanhecer". King/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Some of our favorite work ever from the legendary Hank Ballard – a key figure in early R&B, and a singer who cut some big hits with his group The Midnighters – but one who also continued to do some wonderful work for King Records long after his hits – most of which is included in this wonderful set! The package focuses on years that might be deemed "lost" for Hank – a time when he was past the dance hits of the early part of the 60s, and yet to rise as part of the James Brown universe at the end of the decade – although still, in some way, already strongly in the JB side of the spectrum with cuts like these – deep soul gems, funky numbers, and the kind of rough romping tunes that draw from R&B, but have more of a 60s vibe here. CD features 26 cuts in all – including "Poppin The Whip", "Here Comes The Hurt", "Funky Soul Train", "Do it Zulu Style", "Dance Till It Hurtcha", "Let's Get The Show On The Road", "Annie", "Unwind Yourself", "Which Way Should I Turn", "I'm Just A Fool", "Get That Hump In Your Back", "Just You Just You", "A Winner Never Quits", "Somebody's Got To Help Me", and "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show". Peter Brotzmann/Hamid Drake/Mahmoud GaniaWels Concert ... CD
Okka Disk, 1997. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
One of the most unusual Peter Brotzmann records we've ever heard – and we mean that in the best way possible! The live improvisation features Brotzmann on tenor, alto, tarogato, and e-flat clarinet – working with Hamid Drake on drums, tablas, and percussion – but alongside Moroccan gnawa musician Mahmoud Gania (or Guinia), whose music is a really different addition to the Brotzmann sound! Hamid Drake provides a great bridge between both players – still working as a free jazz musician, but also bringing a wider range of sounds to his percussion, which blends perfectly with Gania's creations on the warm-toned strings of the guembri, and his occasional vocalizations too. The whole thing is amazing – and the balance of avant reeds, percussion, and regional sounds rivals some of the best of the MPS jazz-meets-world titles from years back. The improvisation is 70 minutes in length – and breathtaking throughout! CD

Maxine BrownMaxine Brown – Best Of The Wand Years ... LP
Wand/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $18.99
Maxine Brown on Wand Records is really something amazing – not just because she began her recording career at the label, but also because she never again hit the heights of these recordings! Brown was a really important singer with these sides – still partly in the class and poise of some of the jazz-tinged vocalists that came before her – but also able to open up with a deeper soul vibe that paved the way for Aretha Franklin and so many other singers to come in the second half of the 60s! The production and presentation of these tracks is wonderful, too – great songwriting, and top-shelf studio charts that only lift, and never drown the brilliance of Maxine's unique voice. Titles include "One In A Million", "It's Torture", "Let Me Give You My Lovin", "Yesterday's Kisses", "Oh No Not My Baby", "Gotta Find A Way", "Baby Cakes", "Since I Found You", "It's Gonna Be Alright", and the completely fantastic "If You Gotta Make A Fool Of Somebody". Leon BryantMighty Body (Hotsy Totsy)/Finders Keepers (with bonus track) ... CD
De-Lite/Solid (Japan), 1981/1984. New Copy ... $13.99
A pair of great records from Leon Bryant – both from the late De-Lite Records years, and offered up here back to back! First up is Mighty Body – a set also known as the self-titled Leon Bryant album – overlooked genius from Leon – a singer with a hell of a voice, and a range that can go from very low to super-soaring at the drop of a hat! And fortunately, that style works great here for the later De-Lite Records approach – funky club at its best, with grooves that are already great before Bryant steps into the mix – then find a special sort of magic, thanks to Leon's voice! There's also a good mix of balance, here – as the upbeat groovers are blended with some nice midtempo cuts, and one great stepper too. Titles include "Something More", "Come & Get It", "Just The Way You Like It", and "You Can Depend On Me". Next up is Finders Keepers, a record that would have been huge, had it gotten the kind of mainstream placement it deserved – which would have let the world hear what a great singer Leon Bryant could be! The set's got some top-shelf arrangements from Jimmy Mack and Sonny Sanders – both of whom are sliding perfectly into an 80s soul groove here, but still with all the hipper indie touches of the early years – which means that the whole thing perfectly avoids cliche or commercialism, while also giving Bryant the right sort of sophisticated vibe that works well with the depth of his voice. The range is almost one that we'd rank right up there with DJ Rogers – although with less of the spiritual vibe – and titles include "Are You Ready", "Honey", "Finders Keepers", "Your Kind Of Lovin", and "I Can See Me Loving You". CD also features the bonus track "Mighty Body (original 12" version)". CD

Makossa/BBE (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
A killer blend of African roots and American rhythms – and a set that definitely lives up to the disco promised in the title! Buari's working here with a host of New York musicians – jazzy players who include Randy Brecker and Jon Faddis on trumpet, Barry Rogers on trombone, and Michael Brecker on tenor – all blowing tightly over the album's quick rhythms and well-crafted string arrangements! The sound is hardly familiar disco – and the music is much more in the styles of the underground at the time – almost equivalent to P&P Records productions in the way that Buari works some clever magic with the grooves. The whole thing's got a lot more edge than his better-known set on RCA – and titles include "Koko Si", "I'm Ready", "Feed My Body", "Hard Times", "Adesa A", "Minyo", "Born With Music", and "African Hustle". Donald Byrd & The BlackbyrdsJazz Funk Collection (3CD set) ... CD
Robinsongs (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3 CDs ... $24.99
An amazing tribute to some of the greatest jazz funk of the 70s – the groundbreaking work of trumpeter Donald Byrd, both as a solo act on his own, and as the inspiration for the mighty Blackbyrds group – both of whom are featured on this set! Byrd first broke into new territory in the early 70s with a string of amazing records on Blue Note – all done with help from genius producer Larry Mizell, who helped Byrd's trumpet find a way to groove in an electric space, but at a level that was very different (and a lot more soulful) than any sort of Miles Davis electric modes! This work quickly inspired a young group at Howard University, who chose the name Blackbyrds as a nod to Donald – who quickly became their mentor and producer, and helped them forge a great blend of jazz and funk before they took off on their own. This set features 39 tracks from both artists, illustrating a fantastic partnership and shared musical inspiration – with work from Byrd's Blue Note and Wea albums, and all the great Blackbyrds records for Fantasy in the 70s. Titles include Donald Byrd tracks "Dominoes", "Black Byrd", "Lansana's Priestess", "Wind Parade", "Flying High", "Thank You For Funking Up My Life", "Onward Til Morning", "Dance Band", "Science Funktion", "Dominoes", "Flight Time", "Witch Hunt", "Stepping Into Tomorrow", "Sexy Dancer (12" mix)", "Star Trippin (12" mix)", "Pretty Baby", "Giving It Up", and "Dancing In The Street". Blackbyrds cuts include "Blackbyrd's Theme", "Do It Fluid", "Flying High", "Cornbread", "Time Is Movin", "Happy Music", "Rock Creek Park", "Walkin In Rhythm", "Lookin Ahead", "Street Games", "Gut Level", "Party Land", and "Supernatural Feeling". Cocteau TwinsFour-Calendar Cafe ... CD
Capitol, 1993. Used ... $4.99
The Cocteau Twins have definitely tightened up their sound a bit here since their early days on 4AD – but the group have also held onto everything that's great about their music, and, at some level, use the album as an answer to all of the other groups at the time who were messing about in the "swirl of sound" style they invented a decade before! Long before psych production was revived, fuzzy guitars were cool again, and even analogue elements found new love from the kids – The Cocteau Twins were breaking ground that was fresher than anyone else, and still sounds wonderful here all these many years later. There's definitely a sweetness here that the group never had a few records before – but that's also something that gives the record its really lasting appeal – on songs that include "Theft & Wandering Around Lost", "Oil Of Angels", "Evangeline", "Know Who You Are At Every Age", "Essence", and "Summerhead". The production style has maybe a bit of that later UK psych moodiness, but in a way that really helps reinvigorate the group's sound – not too commercial, but also not an easy retro rehash either – as the group sound surprisingly strong on titles that include "City Life", "Power Surge", "Someone's Gonna Bleed", "Creation", "Shock Horror", "Free Men Live Forever", "Ghost Division", and "English Language". A hell of a set from the comeback years of tenorist Fred Anderson on record – a date that has Fred on tenor with familiar drummer Hamid Drake – joining pianist Marilyn Crispell during a special live performance on a visit to Chicago! The set's very much in the Crispell mode – produced and presented in a manner that's more like some of her records than Fred's – and the freewheeling piano work of the legend really seems to push Anderson on to even bolder moments than some of his other records from the time, but always balanced with the kind of sensitivity that makes him so great, easily echoed by Drake's work on percussion – and balanced out with that sense of space that has always kept us interested in Crispell's music over the decades. The somewhat slept on second album by Das Efx – and in hindsight, it's just as solid as Dead Serious – maybe even more consistently strong than the breakout debut! Dray and Skoob keep up the loco syllabic tempo and tongue tripping rhymes on this one – over the head nodding Solid Scheme beats that sound great to this day – but wisely put the focus on the rhyme craft rather than going overboard with the manic style. Kahil El ZabarKahil El Zabar's America The Beautiful ... CD
Spiritmuse, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
A bold vision for a better version of our nation – served up here by percussionist Kahil El Zabar, but in a mode that also has him working as the conductor of a larger ensemble too! The record has all the sense of pride, power, and optimism of some of the best sessions of this type from the 80s – that feeling that music can actually effect change, especially in the hands of artists like this – a very strong ensemble that features work from Corey Wilkes on trumpet, Hamiet Bluiett on baritone, Tomeka Reid on cello, Josh Ramos on bass, Samuel Williams on violin, and Dennis Winslett on alto sax! The record still has a sense of groove that you'd know from Kahil's smaller group records – imagine a Ritual Trio sense of rhythm with augmented elements – and the set mixes a few well-chosen covers with great originals. The set is dedicated to Bluiette – it was his last recording – and titles include "Prayers For The Unwarranted Sufferings", "Sketches Of An Afro Blue", "Express Yourself", "Freedom March", "That We Ask Of Our Creator", and "How Can We Mend A Broken Heart". Columbia, 1978. Very Good+ ... $1.99
A cool cooker from Maynard Ferguson – and a set that has all the upbeat tones you'd expect from the title, but lots of funky currents underneath! The set really sparkles right from the start – and has that sweet vibe that Maynard was really getting perfect on these late 70s records for Columbia – jazzy fusion that's tight, but never too uptight – with lots of room for sweet solos from the leader himself, plus Bill Hannon on moog, John Qdini on guitar, Eric Traub on tenor, and Mike Migliore on alto. Titles include a famous working of Earth Wind & Fier's "Fantasy" – plus "Battlestar Galactica", "MF Carnival", "Baker Street", "Birdland", "How Ya Doin Baby", and "Stella By Starlight". ✨✧ Lee FieldsLet's Get A Groove On ... LP
Desco/Daptone, 1999. New Copy (reissue)... On December 11, 2020
A stunning return to form by Lee Fields, one of the 70s' lost funky geniuses – heard here in the initial set that would catapult him back in the spotlight for a whole new generation! The record was issued by Desco Records – the key precursor to Daptone, Soul Fire, and other modern funk imprints – and it's got a sound that feels like was lifted from the vaults of James Brown's People label, circa 1972! Unlike other "funk revival" titles of the 90s (especially those by ex-JBs Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker), this one's got a totally perfect sound, and was produced with a loving adherence to the classic 70ss funk sound that made Lee' early records so great – raw vocals, mixed with equally sharp instrumentation – all put together with help from Bosco Mann, Gabriel Roth, and Philippe Lehman – the latter two of whom had been bootlegging older funk records, but were finally ready to try their hand at something of their own. The instrumentation is a tight batch of drum-heavy, bass-heavy, break-heavy grooves – and Lee's voice is incredibly rich and soulful, approaching near-Godfather-like sensibilities! We love this one to death, and it's probably the most perfectly-formed album that Desco ever issued. Titles include "Bad, Bad, Bad", "Let's Get A Groove On", "Watch That Man", "Put It On Me", and "Steam Train". Great great great – and a real smoker! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Alain GoraguerLe Monde Instrumental D'Alain Goraguer (3CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $22.99 29.99
A great little package that finally brings together two different musical worlds of the great Alain Goraguer – the man who's maybe best known for providing the sounds for early recordings by Serge Gainsbourg – and an artist who also recorded some great jazz and soundtrack material on the French scene of the late 50s and early 60s! The set's overflowing with music we've never heard from Goraguer before – including a fair bit of instrumental readings of early Gainsbourg tunes – and although Alain had a few entries in the earlier Jazz In Paris CD series, this 3CD set moves way way past those outings, and offers up work in a range of styles – straight jazz, orchestral, cinematic, Latin, and even a few special projects as well. Much of the music has a very cool postwar Parisian vibe – and the CD features The albums Alain Goraguer Et Son Trio No 1, Go Go Goraguer, Slow Et Fox Du Jazz A La Une, Danse Party No 26, Los Goraguers Cha Cha Cha, plus some 45rpm EP releases – as well as albums recorded under the nom-du-recording of Laura Fontaine – plus soundtracks for the films La Piege, J'Irai Cracher Sur Vos Tombes, Les Loups Dans La Bergerie, L'Eau A La Bouche, Les Heriteiers, and Le Bel Age – plus other bits too. 83 tracks in all – plus notes in English and French, and images of the original records too. The solo LP, after he left and before he rejoined Brand Nubian. Mostly produced by Puba, with some help from Kid Capri, the Stimulated Dummies, the Brand New Heavies and others. In the same sense that the Nubes records without Puba showed he wasn't the be all and end all of the group, this solo effort let Maxwell shine brightly on his own. Yet another reason the early 90s are looked back upon as one of the finest times in hip hop. There's a nice mix of keyboards on the set – acoustic piano, Fender Rhodes, and other keys – used in small combo modes that move between upbeat groovers, jazz dance numbers, and a few mellower moments – a really well-rounded record that also has some nice guitar work in the group too! One of Europe's greatest jazz musicians ever – captured here on two rare albums from the 50s! Although Lars Gullin was mostly a baritone player, his rich talent on the instrument won him many accolades during the postwar years – and he recorded a huge amount of albums, both here in the US, and home in his native Sweden. These two sessions were originally issued in Sweden on Metronome, but are offered here in the versions issued by Atlantic in the US during the late 50s. Both records are some of Gullin's best straight material from the time – and they feature him swinging hard and straight-ahead, in a perfect setting made up of some of Sweden's finest players. Titles include "Always", "After 8pm", "Half Nelson", "So What", "Fedja", and "Perntz". Great to have back out again – and what a deal! A special Christmas album from jazz singer Nicole Henry – an artist we already like during the other months of the years, but one who really seems to get the right sort of spirit for December! In a world of clunky Christmas records, this one's a real standout – as Henry brings an incredible amount of soul and feeling to the tunes – working in a live setting with backing from a piano trio, and some very hip rhythms that really bring out the richest sounds in her voice. Mardi Gras/P-Vine (Japan), Mid 90s. New Copy ... $22.99
Mighty nice work from an overlooked soul group – a combo from the 90s who released a handful of records at the time, but who have a vibe that's much more like some of our favorite groups from the end of the 60s! There's a nicely bubbling vibe to some cuts – kind of the groove that you might hear from Archie Bell & The Drells, but a bit leaner and more laidback at times – and Patrick Henry has a style that crackles nicely around the edges on the groovers, maybe with some of the charms of a young Tyrone Davis or Jesse James – although with a deeper, more personal vibe on the mellow cuts – which balance with the upbeat tracks in a really great way – fleshing out the group's music to make the whole thing feel like some vintage lost gem from the southern scene. CD features 18 tracks in all, pulled from three rare albums by the group – titles that include "Loving U", "Good Loving", "LB Blues", "How Lucky Can I Get", "Come & Get It", "U Cheating", "I'm Leaving U", "Something About You", "Free Me", "The Train", and "I Could Make It Better". King CrimsonIn The Court Of The Crimson King (200 gram pressing) ... LP
Inner Knot, 1969. New Copy Gatefold ... $24.99
An album so heavy, it blew plenty of minds when first released at the end of the 60s! This set's the first-ever utterance from the King Crimson empire – the initial outing of the group, which featured Greg Lake on vocals, and lots of airy, darkly atmospheric guitar from the legendary Robert Fripp! The song structure is quite unusual – and the overall feel is less academically tangled than some of the later records – a feature that makes this album much more sought out by mainstream rockers looking for an intro to the group than some of the later sets. Yet having said that, there's also a pretty amazing approach here – somewhat obtuse, and definitely not looking for any radio edit hits – more just magical musings from a very unique ensemble. Peter Sinfield contributed the lyrics, which are sung by Lake – and Michael Giles handles drums and percussion, while Ian MacDonald plays flute, sax, keyboards, and more. Titles include "Moonchild", "21st Century Schizoid Man", "I Talk To The Wind", "Epitaph", and "Court Of The Crimson King". LP, Vinyl record album

Lee KonitzAlone Together – With Brad Mehldau & Charlie Haden ... LP
Blue Note, 1997. Near Mint- 2LP ... $24.99
A brilliant later set from Lee Konitz – recorded for Blue Note, after many years of Lee's mighty talents being ignored by US labels! Konitz first rose up as a modernist in the postwar years, recorded important records for Atlantic, Verve, Prestige, and other labels – then mostly gave his gifts to the overseas market during the 70s, and especially the 80s. Yet during that time, he grew tremendously as a player – something that's almost hard to imagine given the genius of his youth – and received this excellent showcase courtesy of bassist Charlie Haden, who co-produced with Lee, and plays in the trio alongside pianist Brad Mehldau. The format is open and fluid – never too free, but with that exploratory vibe that Konitz and the rest of the Tristano school opened up in the 50s. Kool & The GangLadies' Night/Celebrate/Something Special/As One/In The Heart/Emergency (3CD set) ... CD
BGO (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... $16.99
A massive package of work from the mighty Kool & The Gang – 6 full albums from the 80s, served up here in a 3CD set! First up is Ladies Night – a shameless dancefloor cash-in move – but a record that's still pretty darn great as well! You all know the big title cut "Ladies Night", so we won't bother to describe it – but we can say that the group wisely hooked up with Deodato, who produced, mixed, and even played keyboards on the album. Deodato keeps a nice jazzy punch in the tracks, while still moving towards the slickly produced funk sound that was the group's main approach at the time of the record. JT Taylor's on vocals, and the album's even got a few mellow cuts – like the crossover easy number "Too Hot" – amidst the midtempo 80s grooves that really step out and make the whole thing move. Other tracks include "Ladies Night", "Hangin Out", "Tonight's The Night", "If You Feel Like Dancin", and "Got You Into My Life". The next album is Something Special indeed – as the album was one of the biggest hits for Kool & The Gang, and showed that the group still had plenty of energy left to groove into the 80s! The record features production work by Brazilian music maestro Eumir Deodato – who by this point had become a sweet and smooth talent with a real flair for putting over a modern soul groove! Deodato's approach is really great – smooth, yet soulful, without any tricks or gimmicks – and a real appreciation for lead vocals and a catchy little hook! The album features the group's party classic "Get Down On It", plus "Steppin Out", "No Show", "Pass It On", "Be My Lady", "Take My Heart", and "Good Time Tonight". As One is solid 80s grooving from Kool & The Gang – a group who inspired so many others in the early 80s soul generation, but who could still do it better than most of the rest! The style here is tight and smooth, but never too slick – and Deodato's giving the group some really great production for the album – helping them to focus their energy and soar soulfully, but without resorting to any stiff gimmicks or cliches! There's a great groove running through most of the numbers here – a confident quality that's never too commercial, and which bubbles along nicely throughout. Titles include "Street Kids", "Big Fun", "As One", "Hi De Hi Hi De Ho", "Let's Go Dancin", and "Pretty Baby". In The Heart is a sweet set that's part of a big early 80s run from Kool & The Gang – a time that saw the funk legends really hitting the mainstream, and winning over a huge new audience in the process! Given that the Gang virtually invented ensemble funk at the start of the 70s, they're perfectly poised here to move into modes that so many of their younger competition were trying – but never did so well – that blend of 80s elements and more sharply-fused funk instrumentation, all honed down into a tightly snapping groove. The real surprise, though, is the group's growing ability for ballads – which put records like this into hands of folks who never would have dug their funk a few years before. And while we might have had a few problems with that shift at the time, the passage of years has got the whole thing sounding pretty darn great to our ears – especially in comparison to so much weaker work from the time. Titles include "In The Heart", "Joanna", "Tonight", "Straight Ahead", "September Love", "You Can Do It", and "Home Is Where The Heart Is". Last up is Emergency – one of the key classics from the second chapter of the group – when their lineup and sound were a lot leaner than before, and they managed to cross over big to a much wider audience than before! The upbeat cuts show that the group were still kings of the funky dancefloor – and the mellower ones are equally great too – showing a rising ballad style that proved to be the group's big crossover card at the time – a way of putting over a laidback track, but with plenty of soul. This approach is heard to great effect on the album's great single "Cherish" – and other tracks include "Bad Woman", "Surrender", "Emergency", "Misled", "Fresh", and "You Are The One". CD

LightmenFree As You Wanna Be (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Judnell/Now Again, 1970. New Copy 2CD ... $6.99 15.98
A record that definitely lives up to its title – as it's a lot freer and more spiritual than later work from drummer Bubbha Thomas and his Lightmen group! This set perfectly captures the unique vibe that the ensemble brought to the Houston scene at the start of the 70s – really the same sort of new jazz freedom explored by artists like Horace Tapscott in LA, or the AACM in Chicago – performed by a generation of musicians who might have been more straight ahead a few years before – but who really take off here in the new energy of the post-Coltrane years! Most numbers are still pretty rhythmic, and have a unified core – but some of the performances are even more outside than you'd know from later Lightmen records – showing a strong avant jazz pedigree for the members of the group. The lineup here features a very young Ronnie Laws on alto, soprano sax, and flute – sounding quite different than his jazz fusion work of the late 70s – and in addition to Thomas on drums, other players include Doug Harris on tenor, Carl Adams on trumpet, Kenny Abair on guitar, and Joe Singleton on trombone. Titles include "Creative Music", "Free As You Wanna Be", "May 67", "Luke 23:32-49", "#109 Psychosomatic", and "Talk Visit". P-Vine (Japan), 2003. New Copy ... $19.99
Barbara Lynn was one of the all-time female soul greats of the 60s – a really strong, independent artist who was more than just a singer – as she also played guitar on her records and wrote a fair bit of her own material too – a quality that really set Barbara apart from the pack, and helped her continue making great music for many years longer than most of her contemporaries! That legacy definitely continues here – in a really wonderful set that was recorded at the start of the century, but with a nicely stripped-down vibe, and a lean quality that really keeps all of Barbara's best deep soul styles in place! There's none of the too-lofty arrangements or the overblown attempts to be "authentic" that sometimes happen when an older soul singer comes into a contemporary studio – just clear, focused work by a southern soul legend, still sounding her best. Titles include "He Ain't Gonna Do Right", "You Don't Sleep At Night", "Matt's Hat", "I'll Suffer", "Sugar Coated Love", "I'm A Good Woman", "He Ain't Gonna Do Right", and "I'm Not Doing Nothing Wrong". 32 Jazz, 1980/1991. Used ... $11.99
Fast Hands is a great date from the revival years of Johnny Lytle – his stretch for Muse Records at the end of the 70s, and a bit of a return to his soul jazz roots of the 60s! The tracks here are a bit longer than before, but they've got a similar sort of energy – a nice rhythmic undercurrent that comes from the drums of Idris Muhammad and percussion of Larry Killian – and which is topped by Johnny's vibes and the tenor of Houston Person, plus some nice keyboards from Mickey Tucker. Titles include a reworking of Lytle's classic stepper "The Man", plus "Blues To Be There", "Sister Silver", "Bein Green", and "Tomorrow". Happy Ground is one of the few later Johnny Lytle LPs to maintain his classic vibes/organ/congas sound of his earlier years – in this case recorded with David Braham on organ and Sammy Figueroa on congas. As the title might imply, the LP features a remake of Lytle's classic "Happy Ground". Other highlights include a great version of Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower" and a moody take on "A Child Is Born". The LP also includes performances by Melvin Sparks and Houston Person, who give the set a nice soul jazz grounding! CD

An early moment of genius from post-Beatles Paul McCartney – a solo set that's wonderfully diverse throughout – filled with the kinds of cool little twists and turns we loved in his late Beatles records, and in his 70s killers with Wings! There's a newly-emerging sweetness going on here – that great sound that started to emerge with the McCartney album – where Paul was a proud, put-together family guy – easily one of the most confident of his fab foursome, and able to bring an incredible amount of charm to just about any style he wanted to try! Some of the best cuts here are the mellower, more personal moments – still delivered with an amazing rock-solid sense of musicianship and production, too – and even the rockers, which might sound clunky in the hands of anyone else, manage to come off with a great deal of charm as well. Blue Note, 1962. Used ... $4.99
A young Jackie McLean at the height of his powers – really stretching out here, but never going too far out – a perfect balance between his modern bop of previous records, and his groundbreaking "new thing" jazz to come! The group is a relatively straight ahead one – with Walter Davis on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – but the tracks are all quite long, and have this really arch sensibility on Jackie's horn – this edge, this cry he didn't have a few years before – easily one of the freshest voices in alto sax at the time, yearning here to break free with new ideas and new modes of expression. The vibe is perfectly balanced – like McLean's classic A Fickle Sonance – and titles include the classic "Melody For Melonae", plus "Rene", "I'll Keep Loving You", and "Omega". CD

Joe McPheeNation Time ... LP
CJ Records/Superior Viaduct, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99
Wild early work from avant jazz genius Joe McPhee – and a set that's actually pretty darn funky too! This rare indie release features 3 long tracks – two of which were recorded live, with a tight combo that includes a very funky drummer! The album kicks off with the hard wailing "Nation Time", which begins with a shout from Joe, and which rolls into a vamping modal groove (almost Pharoah Sanders-ish) filled with spiritual tenor work from McPhee, and some nice electric piano that sounds very off-kilter – funky, but unusual too. Next up is "Shakey Jake", an excellent 13 minute funk number – with bubbling organ, vamping rhythms, and a nice extended jazz dance groove – one of the rare tunes that has kept the album at the top of collectors' lists for years! And last up is "Scorpio's Dance", a pretty raw and somber track, with a nice open-ended loft jazz quality – balancing things out with a bit of avant energy. LP, Vinyl record album

Joe McPhee & Jeb BishopBrass City ... CD
Okka Disk, 1999. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
The album's a definite brass city – given that Joe McPhee plays pocket cornet and valve trombone, and just a bit of soprano sax – next to excellent work on slide trombone by the great Jeb Bishop! The players have an instant sympathy with each other – so much so that space and timing are as important as the sounds that emerge from either player – a really sensitive balance that reflects all the great elements that Bishop was bringing to his music at the time, and which seems to take McPhee back to some of the genius of his earliest records too! The set features the seven part "The Brass City" suite – plus "Outpost (For Tom Guaralnick)", "Transmute", and "The Rozwell Incident". CD

Mickey & SylviaLove Is Strange ... CD
RCA/Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $22.99 36.99
A fantastic set of tracks from one of the coolest soul music duos of all time – guitarist Mickey Baker and sweet-voiced Sylvia Vanderpool – who'd later rise to fame as Sylvia Robinson, the guiding force behind New Jersey soul in the 70s, and Sugarhill Records during the early years of hip hop! This work is way before that fame, though – as Sylvia provides this fantastic counterpoint to the rougher vocals and raw guitar of Mickey – a hell of a player who uses his instrument in just the right way to bring bluesy inflections to the music, while never moving into blues or R&B modes at all. The package is still the best that's ever been done on the music by the pair – and features a massive 60 tracks in all, with a huge 52 page booklet of notes that also includes lots of recording details – in support of great tunes that include "Two Shadows On Your Window", "Love Is Strange", "Rise Sally Rise", "Forever & A Day", "Seems Like Yesterday", "What Would I Do", "Sweeter As The Day Goes By", "Love Lesson", "This Is My Story", "Where Is My Honey", "Shake It Up", "Rock & Stroll Room", "Bewildered", "There'll Be No Backin Out", "Summertime", and lots lots more! Moondog & The London SaxophonicSax Pax For A Sax ... CD
Atlantic, 1994. Used ... $18.99
One of the most dynamic Moondog records we've ever heard – a set that's heavy on saxophone instrumentation, played here by the London Saxophonic ensemble! Saxes handle as much of the rhythms here as they do the melodies – although well recorded and solidly-structured, the tunes still have some of the naive charm of Moondog's early work – kind of an evolution of those earthy inspirations into the fuller sound of a range of saxes. There's also vocals on some numbers – sung by Peter Hammill, Andrew Davis, Stuart Gordon, and others – and titles include "Dog Trot", "Paris", "Bird's Lament", "Fiesta", "Sea Horse", "D Is For Danny", "Shakespeare City", "EEC Suite", and "Mother's Whistler". Rudy Ray MooreCockpit – The Third Rudy Ray Moore Album ... CD
Kent/Dolemite, Early 70s. New Copy ... $5.99 12.98
Rudy Ray Moore flies the friendly skies – and turns out one of his best records of the 70s! The set is easily one of the tightest albums from Rudy's classic years – and uses a fair bit of musical backings beneath his very raunchy comedy – in ways that are sometimes funky, but also have jazzier or more soulful moments – with the kind of vibe that was common for performers like Moore in a club – as they'd usually have a small combo grooving along with their jokes. Rudy's classic "Petey Wheatstraw – The Devil's Son-In-Law" is done here in a nice extended version – and other tracks include "Have You Seen My Mule", "Like A Brother", "The Big Shipwreck", "Mop Bucket", and "Pool Shooting Monkey". And yes, the title is something of a dirty joke – but isn't that what you buy Rudy Ray Moore albums for in the first place! CD

✨✧ Mr PresidentOne Night ... LP
Favorite (France), 2020. New Copy ... $24.99
Maybe the best work so far from Mr President – one of our favorite projects from the tireless French producer Bruno "Patchworks" Hovart! The set begins with a groove that would be right at home on some late 70s funky jazz playlist – kind of Roy Ayers or Kudu Records – then moves through a range of great cuts that really hold onto a vintage vibe, but with all the best sorts of underground modes that Bruno always brings to his work! Vocals shift from track to track – and include contributions from Hawa, Cindy Pooch, Celia Kameni, and Sabba MG – but the whole thing has a wonderfully unified vibe – warm, soulful, jazzy, and very very groovy. Titles include "Teasing Me So Bad", "Tears Keep On Falling", "Gabriel", "The Time Is Now", "Plenty Loads Of Loving", and "One Night". LP, Vinyl record album

Idris MuhammadPower Of Soul (180 gram yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Kudu/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $31.99 33.99
An incredible record from funky drummer Idris Muhammad! Idris is probably known for his funky break work on Blue Note and Prestige records sessions of the late 60s and early 70s – but by the time of this 1974 album, he was really expanding his style, hitting a laidback groove that went way beyond the simple drum break, into a world of complicated fills and riffs that forever changed the face of funk. The best example of this is the album's standout groove – the massive cut "Loran's Dance", which has a mellow jazzy vibe that you'll recognize from its popular use as a sample cut over the years (by the Beastie Boys, DJ Shadow, and others.) All cuts are long and mellow, and other titles include "Power Of Soul", "Saddest Thing" and "Piece of Mind". LP, Vinyl record album

Ronald MuldrowYesterdays ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1992. New Copy ... $16.99
A sweet set of organ jazz on Enja Records – a label that normally never embraces the Hammond this strongly, but does a really great job on this overlooked gem! The group's led by guitarist Ronald Muldrow, and features organ work by Mel Rhyne – that legendary Indianapolis player who was just beginning to open up a strong second chapter of his career during this generation – really sounding great, and every bit as important to the sound of the record as Muldrow's guitar! Ron plays with a nice sense of color, and phrasing that occasionally rivals that of one of Rhyne's hometown contemporaries from years back – and Victor Campbell provides some nicely snapping drums to keep the whole thing moving along. Titles include "Besame Mucho", "Sham Time", "Yesterdays", "Grooving High", and "Love For Sale". CD

Columbia/DIW, 1991. Used ... $7.99
A great little session by Murray – recorded at that point in the early 90s when DIW was turning out some especially soulful records! The group on the set features Fred Hopkins on bass, McCoy Tyner on piano, and Elvin Jones on drums – and although you might expect a Coltraney feel from such a group, the range of expression is wider, in a variety of rootsier styles that Murray was using at the time. Titles include "3D Family", "Cousin Mary", "Hope/Scope", "Dexter's Dues", and "La Tina Lee". CD

Alexander O'NealAll True Man (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Tabu/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1991. New Copy ... $9.99
A classic set from all-true Alexander O'Neal – and maybe one of his last great records for the Tabu label! The set's got a nice balance of groovers and mellower moments – really showing the growing diversity of O'Neal as an artist, as he tries to move away from some of his bigger ballads. The rhythms are often handled by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis – who themselves are going for a leaner style than in the 80s, yet still have that undeniable funky punch in the mix! At tines, Alexander's not leading the songs so much as stepping into the grooves – but at other times, he comes as the strong singer that first emerged in the mid 80s. Titles include "What Is This Thing Called Love", "The Yoke", "Time Is Running Out", "All True Man", "Midnight Run", "Used", "Shame On Me", and "The Morning After". Bonus tracks include "All True Man (classic club mix)" and "Sentimental (edit)". CD

✨✧ William Parker/Raining On The MoonGreat Spirit ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2015. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Some of the most soulful music we've ever heard from bassist William Parker – a set that puts his mighty instrument to use at the core of a sextet who move with a sound that's perhaps a bit more straight ahead than some of Parker's usual music – but no less spiritual at all! The group's got a key element in the vocals of singer Leena Conquest – an artist we've always liked on Parker's other records, but who really has a righteous power here, very much in a classic 70s mode – soaring out front on her lyrics with a quality that we'd reserve for a rare few jazz singers – like Carmen Lundy or Dee Dee Bridgewater! And like both of them, she gels perfectly with the rest of the group – which includes great work from Rob Brown on alto, Lewis Barnes on trumpet, Eri Yamamoto on piano, and Hamid Drake on drums. Parker is sublime throughout – sounding as bold and righteous as ever – and titles include "Bowl Of Stone Around The Sun", "Feet Music", "Dodson Ngoni Blues", "Great Spirit", and "Prayer Improv". CD

Oscar PetersonOscar Peterson Plays The Cole Porter Song Book ... LP
Verve, 1959. Very Good ... $9.99
Cole Porter's tunes are great enough on their own, but Oscar really opens them up on this set – picking up the inherent rhythms in the numbers and really working them over – in a way that makes the outing one of the most lively in Peterson's songbook series for Verve! Oscar's fluid touch on the keys is perfect throughout – taking lots of chances, but always strongly following the melody – and rhythm accompaniment is from the usual team of Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums. Titles include "In The Still Of The Night", "Love For Sale", "It's All Right With Me", "Just One Of Those Things", "Night & Day", "It's De-Lovely", and "I Love Paris". LP, Vinyl record album

Liz PhairExile In Guyville ... LP
Matador, 1993. Sealed 2LP ... $59.99
Think what you want about the lady and her music, this album's one of the most crucial indie sets of the 90s – a record that not only elevated a whole new level of songwriting, but also helped find a new role for the female artist in the changing scene of the time! Plus, for us, it's also a set that's as important to the Chicago scene as most of the big Seattle records were to that city – a showcase of the city's new energy towards music making, and the way it could take risks but touch a larger audience, too – thanks to the instrumental efforts of Phair's great band, and the production of Brad Wood (the set germinated just blocks from Dusty Groove – so maybe we're a bit biased, too!) Titles include "Dance Of The Seven Veils", "Never Said", "Soap Star Joe", "Canary", "Mesmerizing", "F*ck & Run", "Girls Girls Girls", "Shatter", "Divorce Song", "Flower", "Gunshy", "Strange Loop", "Stratford On Guy", and "Explain It To Me". Northern Spy, 1999. New Copy ... $18.99
The "Asylum" here isn't a reference to Asylum Records – that powerhouse of singer/songwriter material – but a fictional allusion to the mental institution in which this music was supposedly created – yet another slice of the mysterious puzzle of Marvin Pontiac, the alter ego of actor/musician/singer John Lurie! Leaving that joke aside, and forgetting all the fake mystery that Lurie puts around the project – the music is actually pretty good, and has the wonderful vocal style of Lurie in character turned to spare, moody songs – almost as if Lurie's hitting Tom Waits territory, and we mean that in a very good way. ✨✧ Iggy PopTV Eye 1977 Live ... LP
RCA, 1977. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A fantastic concert counterpart to the late 70s RCA Records revival of the career of Iggy Pop – and, like the best of that work, a set that features strong contributions from David Bowie! Bowie both produced with Iggy, and plays on half the material on the set – playing this very cool live-treated piano in a quartet behind Iggy's vocals – which makes for a really wonderful sound next to the guitar! Bowie's role is filled by Scott Thurston on the other tracks – playing piano, harmonica, and a bit of electronics – but as you'd guess, Iggy's the real star of the show – really blowing us away with his sharp-edge performance, on tracks that include "Funtime", "Sixteen", "I Got A Right", "TV Eye", "Lust For Life", "Dirt", "Nightclubbing", and "I Wanna Be Your Dog". Larry Porter TrioMarch Blues ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Germany), 1994. New Copy ... $16.99
An overlooked gem on Enja Records – one of the few dates we've ever seen as a leader from pianist Larry Porter, who works here in a warmly swinging groove with lots of lyrical touches! The group's got an understated approach, but one that works beautifully – the kind of trio date you might hear from someone like Tommy Flanagan or Kenny Barron – with every bit the same sense of individual expression that sets players like that apart from the rest, able to really old us rapt, even with a very familiar format! The trio features Thomas Stabenow on bass and Rick Hollander on drums – and titles include the originals "Eadie Is A Lady", "Sky Blues", "March Blues", "October Blues", "The River Flows But Does Not Wash Away The Moon", and "So Near Yet So Far Away". Dudu PukwanaNight Time Is The Right Time – 60s Soho Sounds ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy ... $14.99
A completely unique slide of work from Dudu Pukwana – a side of the reedman you may never have heard before! Dudu's best known for his work in the Blue Notes – that legendary avant assemblage of South African players – and although he's also recorded in other creative settings, this may well be the first time we've heard him on a soul jazz session – burning brightly with some killer Hammond from organist Bob Stuckey! The combo's tight and right on the money – grooving live at Ronnie Scotts with the feel of some Prestige Records sax/organ group of the mid 60s – a real change for Dudu, but one we really love! Pukwana still puts in lots of unusual edges in his music – some odd tones and unusual shifts that really keep things interesting – especially giving the group's use of mostly original compositions, most by Dudu! Titles include "Jauana's Dream", "Messengers", "Kicks For Sale", "B My Dear", "Moonshine", "Kippie", and "Blessing Light". Plus, the CD features 5 more tracks by a trio that features Stuckey on Hammond and Terry Smith on guitar – "I Feel Pretty", "All Of You", "When I Grow Too Old To Dream", "Bob's Hop", and "Sweet Georgia Brown".
