Zoh Amba/William Parker/Francisco MelaO Life O Light Vol 1 (with bonus track) ... CD
577, 2022. New Copy ... $11.99 13.99
Reed player Zoh Amba is in some fantastic company here – every bit as great as you'd guess in a trio setting with William Parker on bass and Francisco Mela on drums! Yet even amidst these giants, Amba more than holds her own – especially on tenor, which she blows in this raw, raspy quality that almost has echoes of Albert Ayler at times – in terms of individuality and spirit! The tracks are all quite long, and build with a nice sort of intensity – and Zoh also plays flute on the record as well. Titles include "O Life O Light", "Mountains In The Predawn Light", and "Mother's Hymn" – plus the shorter "Satya". CD

Daniel Carter/Matthew Shipp/William Parker/Gerald CleaverWelcome Adventure Vol 2 ... LP
577, 2022. New Copy ... $20.99 24.99
One of those records that just makes us say "wow" right from the very first note – a perfect showcase for all musicians involved, and a really mighty meeting of the creative minds! We've really loved the strong return to form that Matthew Shipp has given us on piano in recent years – and of course, the basswork of William Parker is always tremendous – but they both somehow rise even more to the top alongside the drums of Gerald Cleaver and reeds of Daniel Carter – in a session that's wonderfully spiritual, very rhythmic, and often quite straight at times! There's a balance between the avant impulses of the players and the collective action of the group – almost recalling the loft jazz years, but more contemporarily righteous too – and this second volume features titles that include "Wordwide", "Mask Production", "Da Rest Is Story", and "Blinking Down". ChangeChange Of Heart (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic/Big Break (UK), 1984. New Copy ... $13.99 18.99
A game-changing album from Change – a real breakthrough for the early 80s international soul combo! Change Of Heart has some great production by Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis – and on top of that, it's perhaps the best set of songs the group had recorded to to date. Jam/Lewis wrote half the tunes and produced most of the album, which is front-loaded with some of the best of them. They kick up the beat them the big hit "Change Of Heart", along with the great "You Are My Melody", "True Love", "It Burns Me Up", and the more mellow "Say You Love Me Again", the album's opener. Change's own Timmy Allen's songs are great, too – and the record is remarkably consistent as a whole. Slick without sacrificing the soul, and with the bouncing mid 80s Jam/Lewis production vibe that's sounds as fresh as ever! Other titles include "Lovely Lady", "Got My Eyes On You" and "It Burns Me Up". This Big Break UK remastered version has 4 bonus tracks: "Change Of Heart (Single Version)", ""You Are My Melody (Single Version)", "It Burns Me Up (Single Version)" and "Change Of Heart (12" Alternate Dance Version)". Thad Jones & Mel LewisCentral Park North ... CD
Blue Note/EMI, 1969. Used ... $5.99
Excellent work from the team of Thad Jones and Mel Lewis – arguably one of their best albums from the late 60s, and a set that's got some really great funky big band numbers! There's a nice bouncing groove to the group that they normally don't have – possibly because Richard Davis is playing some Fender bass on the set, which brings in a nice focus on the bottom end – and the best numbers have a sock-soul feel that's in the best late 60s large group soul jazz mode! Titles include "Tow Away Zone", "Jive Samba", "The Groove Merchant", and "Central Park North". CD

Matador, 1980. Used 2 CDs ... $6.99
Essential neo psych post punk from Robyn Hitchcock & The Soft Boys. While we defy anyone to convince us that a better rock & roll song than "I Wanna Destroy You" came out in 1980, the whole album is really great! There's something of a sinister undercurrent to the to the songs and the vocals are amazing. Other tracks include "Kingdom Of Love", "Positive Vibrations", "Insanely Jealous", "Tonight", "You'll Have To Go Sideways", "The Queen Of Eyes", "Underwater Moonlight" and more – plus this 2CD version comes with tons of outtakes and a whole second disc of bonus tracks. Sarah Vaughan & The Count Basie OrchestraSend In The Clowns – Sarah Vaughan & The Count Basie Orchestra (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Pablo, 1981. Used ... $6.99
Sarah Vaughan is working here with the Count Basie orchestra – but in a way that's still relatively relaxed, and very much in keeping with her best modes of the Pablo years! There's less of the Basie bombast than you might expect on the record – and the group, arranged and conducted by Sam Nestico, leave plenty of room for Vaughan to step out in that warmly flowing vocal style that characterized her best later albums. Most numbers build slowly – with Sarah's vocals leading the cues, and the band glowing in the background to color things in before taking off – and titles include "I Gotta Right To Sing The Blues", "Just Friends", "Ill Wind", "If You Could See Me Now", "I Hadn't Anyone Till You", "Indian Summer", and "When Your Lover Has Gone". The recording debut of tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander – done at a time when he'd just finished some key woodshedding years on the south side of Chicago, and was poised to become one of the most important jazz voices of his generation! Even at this early point, Alexander's clearly one of the greats – a tenorist with confidence and creativity, and no cliches whatsoever in his sound – an instantly classic player who's well matched here with the incredible Harold Mabern on piano, in a generation-spanning partnership that would form the basis for a number of tremendous albums to come. Other players on the date include Jim Rotondi on trumpet, John Webber on bass, and George Fludas on drums – and titles are a well-balanced set of choices that include "Straight Up", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "Blues Waltz", "An Oscar For Treadwell", and "End Of A Love Affair". ✨✧ LoveOut There ... CD
Blue Thumb/Big Beat (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Lesser-known work by Love – recorded immediately after the group's seminal records on Elektra, with a slightly different sound! The CD brings together tracks from the albums Out Here and False Start – both of which feature the band moving back to basics, working in a harder rocking style that has less of the baroque arrangements of albums like Da Capo or Forever Changes. Arthur Lee's still as incredible as ever – with that slightly mad vocal approach that gives even the most mundane tunes a real edge – and the guitar work's supported by an even heavier style of rhythm, one that almost gives a few tracks some nice funky moments. CD features 14 tracks in all, including "Gimi A Little Break", "Nice To Be", "Listen To My Song", "I'll Pray For You", "Love Is Coming", "Signed DC", "Gather Round", and "Love Is More Than Words Or Better Late Than Never". Atlantic/Collectables, 1962. Used ... Out Of Stock
A killer batch of tracks from one of the most underrated leaders in the business! Slide's group is slightly larger than usual, but he drives them with a fire that's just incredible – pounding away at a mighty rhythm, and wailing out in searing solos that flash, pop, and are gone in a shining brilliance! We can't recommend this stuff enough – and even if you've got some prejudices against larger groups, we can say that this set swings with the hardest Blue Note or Prestige soul jazz sides of the 60s. Both albums are excellent – and players include Horace Parlan, Joe Farrell, and Ronnie Cuber, plus more obscure talents like Willie Thomas, Benny Jacobs-El, and Hobart Dotson. 18 tracks in all – and nearly all of them are mighty groovers! Titles include "Strollin", "The Barbarians", "Slide Slid", "Gorgeous George", "Spanish Flyer", "Bye Bye Love", "Slide's Blues", and "Begin The Beguine". CD

One of the first classic hip hop movie soundtracks of the late 80s, and a motherlode of great cuts! As divisive, hard hitting and uncompromising as the movie was, the Colors soundtrack does a great job of delivering on the tone with Ice T's title track and theme some, a snapshot of mid-to-late 80s classic rap, funk from Rick James and more. Marley Marl produced the majority of these cuts, and this was the early days of the Cold Chillin/Warner alliance, and titles include "Paid In Full (7 minute Cold Cut remix)" by Eric B & Rakim, "Butcher Shop" by Kool G Rap, "Colors" by Ice T, "Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Waste" by M.C. 577, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An album-length improvisation from a very unusual trio – one that's based on an Ankrasmation score by trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith, but which is also heavily influence by the guitar work and production of Henry Kaiser! The album may well be one of the most spiritual we've heard from Henry in years – as his guitar is balanced alongside that of Alex Varty – in this spacious, two-guitar setting that maybe owes as much to the acoustic underground of the 60s and 70s as it does to some of Kaiser's other work. The guitars build up the sound for quite some time before Wadada comes into the mix – and when he does, his sense of creativity really sets the whole thing on fire – in ways that maybe make the whole thing one of the most unique albums we've heard from either player in quite awhile. ✨✧ Lyman Woodard OrganizationLive At Last – 1974 to 1993 ... CD
Uuquipleu, 1970s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Killer live work from the Lyman Woodard Trio – and a split set that shows much much the group kept grooving on the Detroit scene, even after their initial early 70s fame! The first half of the CD features material from 1974 – recorded at JJ's Lounge in the Shelby Hotel in the Motor City – very jazz-based, with soaring organ from Lyman himself, guitar from Ron English, and drums from Leonard King. The whole thing's nicely recorded, with a strong focus on that sweet and super-dope tone that's always made Woodard so great – as you'll hear on the cuts "Even Today", "Jumpin The Blues", "If You Could See Me Now", and "ESP". The second half of the set is from 20 years later – recorded in 1993 at Sully's Roadhouse – with the same trio, equally tight and funky! In fact, the 1993 set's almost funkier, as it's got some originals by Woodard that are mighty nice – the titles "Lyman's Montuno" and "Belle Isle Daze" – next to the cuts "I Got A Woman", "Drown In My Own Tears", and "A Fine Romance". A recent live set from the legendary Lyman Woodard – and a record that's every bit as great as his killers from the 70s! The sound is wonderful – a stunning revelation of this Detroit talent who's been overlooked for years, but has kept on turning out wonderful music – at a point when the rest of the world finally caught up to him! The set's filled with cool original tracks that are just wonderful – and titles include "Deja Vu", "Itanita", "Portrait Of Martha", "Ultima Linda", "On Your Mind", "Cheeba", "Help Me Get Away", "Fishfeet", and "The Lullabye". Mar (Belgium), Late 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Killer stuff! Billy Stewart is one of our favorite-ever soul singers from the 60s – and this set of 26 tracks is probably the only way you'll really be able to find most of his best work! The collection's a bit slim on liner notes, but it manages to pull together a lot of great cuts that were rare album sides, or rare single tracks that pass for a fortune among collectors who know their music. Stewart's unique voice is always a treasure, and the arrangements crackle with the right sort of energy to get the best out of his style. Titles include "Cross My Heart", "Billy's Blues", "Tell It Like It Is", "I'm No Romeo", "Fat Boy's Boogaloo", "I Do Love You", "Sitting In The Park", "Once Again", "No Girl", "A Fat Boy Can Cry", "Keep Lovin", "Count Me Out", and "Scramble". Jazzland/OJC, 1962. Used ... Out Of Stock
An unusual record for vibist Johnny Lytle – one that has him breaking from his usual trio formation, to work in a super-tight lineup that includes some soul jazz heavyweights! The sound's quite different than Lytle's usual mix of organ and vibes, but still pretty darn great – thanks to a group that includes Bobby Timmons on piano, Johnny Griffin on tenor, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. Johnny's vibes are out front in the mix – leaping around some really inventive grooves that have a rollicking early 60s soul jazz approach – and titles include "Soul Time", "322-Wow!", "Coroner's Blues", and "That's All". Count BasieBasie (aka E=MC2) ... CD
Roulette, 1957. Used ... $6.99
One of THE seminal Basie albums of all time – and a masterful pairing between the Count and arranger Neal Hefti! Hefti has an amazing ear for the Basie groove, and he works here to re-fit the overall sound of the group with a tighter, more fluid approach – one that ensured that they'd be alive and booming well into the 60s. The Hefti touch is one that's slightly lighter than the Basie of before – one that assumes the bump at the bottom, but never overdoes it – and instead almost uses the sound of no sound at all to carry the rhythm – while the horns at the top of the group are vamping around in these majestic charts that break out into fantastically searing solos. Basie's on piano, natch – and other players include Thad Jones, Joe Newman, Henry Coker, Al Grey, Frank Wess, Frank Foster, and Eddie Lockjaw Davis. Titles are all brilliant Hefti originals – and include "After Supper", "Flight Of The Foo Birds", "Teddy The Toad", "Splanky", "Fantail", and "Lil Darlin". CD

Beth CarvalhoMundo Melhor ... LP
RCA (Brazil), 1976. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Beth Carvalho was one of the leading lights of the new samba generation of the 70s – and this great little album is a good illustration of the lady at her best! Beth can hit a lively groove with the best of them, but also bring a bit more expression to her voice as well – sometimes almost reaching territory of her more sophisticated partners in the MPB generation – but never losing sight of the lightly tripping qualities that make her samba so great! Core instrumentation comes from cavaquinho, 7 string guitar, and lots more percussion – arranged by Ivan Paulo and Rildo Hora, on titles that include "Antes Ele Do Que Eu", "Te Segura", "Salario Minimo", "Meu Escudo", "Divina E A Musica", "Mundo Melhor", and "Quero Alegria". Earth Wind & FireRaise! ... LP
Columbia, 1981. Very Good Gatefold ... $7.99
Earth Wind & Fire hits the 80s – and never misses a beat! Turns out that the group's older style of jazzy funk was a perfect fit for the boogie-styled rhythms of the post-disco era – heard here on the megahit "Let's Groove", and followed up by a beautiful batch of supporting numbers! There's styles here that other groups were starting to use at the time – keyboard flourishes and more electrified rhythms at the bottom – but throughout the whole set, Maurice White and the group handle themselves with trademark EWF class, and elevate even the simplest of tunes to a higher level. Another winner for the group, and the kind of record that most other groups could only hope to record once! Gil EvansSvengali ... CD
Atlantic (Germany), 1973. Used ... $8.99
A great example of the way that Gil Evans really opened up his groove in the 70s – moving here way way past the cool jazz and third stream of earlier years – into a soulful style that's far groovier than might be expected! Part of the strength of the set is because of the players – as Gil's working with a group of younger soul jazz and spiritual soloists that include Ted Dunbar, Billy Harper, and Hannibal Marvin Peterson – as well as the older soul modernist Richard Williams. But there's also some other specifically Evans-like touches to the record that stand out – like Gil's stark notes on acoustic piano and his lighter work on the electric keys – plus a bit of inventive synthesizer from David Horowitz, who makes a few tracks really crackle with energy. Tracks include "Zee Zee", "Blues In Orbit", "Cry Of Hunger", and "Thoroughbred" – the latter two of which are lovely compositions by Billy Harper! CD

FMP/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1977. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
A record that's nothing like you'd expect from the title – neither pink nor pongy, and instead a second bold statement from pianist George Grawe – working here with a similar group as on his tremendous debut, but with a style that shows that their playing has already evolved quite a bit! Tracks are shorter, and maybe have more of a sense of space – subtle sonic understandings between Grawe's piano, the trumpet of Horst Grabosch, the tenor and soprano of Harold Dau, bass of Hans Schneider, and drums of Achim Kramer – as they work in ways that link the open freedoms of the early FMP generation with some of the more contemplative sonic energy of the second era – served up here on beautiful tracks that include "New Tune", "Low Noise", "More Noise", "Moongun", "Braunsscheich", "Approximated", and "Pink Pong", which is dedicated to Steve Lacy. Freddie HubbardSplash ... CD
Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1981. New Copy ... $7.99 14.99
Freddie Hubbard makes a sweet splash for the 80s in this great little set – one of his last electric outings before a return to more acoustic modes! The vibe's a bit leaner than some of his late 70s albums, with most of the electricity coming from the bass, and from the keyboards by Chester Thompson or Louis Small – but the record's definitely got that soaring sense of flow that Freddie brought to his best work of this nature – that new sound he unlocked during the 70s, which finally seemed to find the right voice for that mighty horn of his! Jeanne Tracy sings a bit of vocals on the set, bringing in a touch of soul to the album – and titles include the stepping classic "Touchdown" – plus "Splash", "Mystic Lady", "I'm Yours", "Jarri", "You're Gonna Lose Me", and "Sister Stine". ✨✧ Jack Lancaster & Robin LumleyMarscape ... LP
RSO, 1976. Near Mint- ... $3.99
A really cool little record, but one that always gets a bit lost in the racks – partly because it's kind of in a strange, weird space of its own – although that's also very much it's appeal! The album is very much what's promised in the title – kind of a soundscape with an outer space vibe – recorded by reed player Jack Lancaster and keyboardist Robin Lumley – the latter of whom plays Fender Rhodes, moog, Arp, and a heck of a lot more! The style is kind of in a post-Herbie mode – almost Pat Gleeson at times – with spare tracks, jamming tracks, and a slight bit of funk on a few numbers – very much in a unique space between instrumental prog and funky fusion – with all the best bits of both styles rolled into one record! The set is also noteworthy for featuring drums by Phil Collins, and guitars from JOhn Goodsall – on titles that include "Take Off", "Homelight", "Blowholes (The Pipes of Mars)", "Dust Storm", "Sail On Solar Winds", "Hopper", "With A Great Feeling Of Love", and "Olympus Mons". A great global showcase for the growing power of Bob Marley – an excellent live set recorded in London in 1975, and a date that shows Bob and The Wailers working with the crowd in this really universal spirit! The group's almost got a funkier current here than on some of their studio record – and their sharp edges are warmed up by female backing vocals which seem almost to act as a bridge between Marley's lead, and the very enthusiastic spirit of the crowd! The whole thing's great – and titles include totally burning versions of "Trenchtown Rock", "Burnin & Lootin", "Them Belly Full", "Lively Up Yourself", "No Woman, No Cry", "I Shot The Sheriff", and "Get Up Stand Up". ✨✧ Gary McFarland/Grady Tate/Bobby ScottSlaves (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Skye/Muzak (Japan), 1969. Used Gatefold ... $28.99
An unusual little soundtrack to this obscure pre-Roots film about slavery – handled with some very nice touches from Gary McFarland, Bobby Scott, and Grady Tate! The music is penned by Scott, and is mostly in that hip blend of jazz and soul roots that he was using on some of his own 60s vocal work – but expanded a bit more here with the groovier styles of Skye Records, thanks to arrangements and conducting from Gary McFarland! The work's not as funky as you might expect, but is still plenty darn great – and there's a few instrumental numbers that are especially great here. Grady Tate sings on the vocal ones, often in the deep-voiced style of his own Skye albums – but with an approach that's a bit more down home and soul-based, which is a nice change – almost like Oscar Brown Jr at the best moments. A number of tracks are done in both instrumental and vocal versions – and titles include "Nightwind", "Slaves", "Black Lullabye", "Another Mornin", and "Pickin Cotton". CD

Jimmy McGriffBlack & Blues ... LP
Groove Merchant, 1971. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... $11.99
An unusual little album for Jimmy McGriff – released during his funkier years at the Groove Merchant label, but with a gritty sort of sound that takes us back to his first few records on Sue in the 60s! The "blues" in the title is definitely well-chosen – as the tracks here are long, lean, and drawn out – blues-drenched soul jazz played by a small combo that includes Larry Frazier on guitar, Rudy Johnson on tenor, and Saint Jenkins on drums – plus Gerry Jemmott on electric bass, adding a bit more vamp to the background than usual. There's a very earthy feel to most numbers – almost improvised jams at times, at least on the tracks that are credited to McGriff as the writer. Titles include "Blue Groove (parts 1 & 2)", "Blues For A Broken Down Funky Old Bus", "Bahama", "Mack The Knife", "Harp-er", "Mocha", "Hey Mrs Jones", "Amen", and "Penthouse Serenade". An overlooked gem! During the mid 70s, Jackie McLean cut a few fantastic records that had a very spiritual vibe, and which added in a lot more soul than in previous sessions from the 60s. Part of the strength of these recordings – including this one – is the other musicians in the group – like the great Billy Gault, who wrote 2 tracks on the record, and who plays some very spiritual piano – or the excellent Billy Skinner, a young trumpeter who also emerges as a strong writer on this session. Other players include Rene McLean on alto and soprano, and Michael Carvin on drums – and tracks include "Camel Driver", "Some Other Time", "Adrian's Dance", and "Star Dancer".
