Black Rock & RonStop The World ... CD
RCA/Get On Down, 1989. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
The rare, late 80s gem from Black Rock & Ron – dedicated to and featuring production by the late, great Paul C McKasty – along with some production by Jazzy Jay and Skeff Anselm. You can hear Paul C's influence in the edits, the tightness of the beats and the layering and chopping of the samples, which definitely pushes this set to higher level. The rhymes are impressive, too – especially in the heavier, rawer and harder hitting tracks. Solid duo rap and tight production from the Hollis, Queens crew. Titles include 'You Can't Do Me None", "Black Is The Word", "That's How I'm Livin'", "Getting Large", "I'm Tired", "3 Brothers And Yvonne", "Rap Life", "Act Like You Know" and "Black, Rock & Ron (video mix)". 15 tracks in all. Freddy Briggs (aka Coldwater Stone)Lost Soul Of Freddie Briggs – Defrost Me (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
GSF/Outta Sight (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $9.99
Wow, we knew almost nothing about this record! Freddy Briggs is the main force behind Coldwater Stone – as he wrote and produced all the tracks, and sings lead vocals throughout the record. His style's sort of a mix of funk and soul, and he works in the heavier style that was used by some of the other bands on the legendary GSF imprint – but also has a nice southern soul style in the best moments! Not as grittily funky as the Skullsnaps, but a fitting labelmate – and with a smoldering, geniune soulfulness that's positively killer – a record that's as rare as any other on the label, if not more so! Titles include "End Of the World", "Jefferson Park", "Outside Love Affair", "You're the One", "Biggest Mistake In The World", and "Without The One You Love". This excellent CD version from Outta Site UK packages the remastered Coldwater Stone's Defrost Me album with 2 bonus tracks: "Sound Off" and "I'm So Sorry", with credit and top billing to Freddy Briggs – with notes that provide some insight in the man that we simply didn't have before and we appreciate it! Gary ByrdPresenting The Gary Byrd Experience (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/Get On Down, 1972. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
A wicked lost album of righteous funk and poetic knowledge from the great Gary Byrd! Gary began his life as a soul DJ in New York, but by the early 70s, he was using his rich voice to create recordings designed to educate as much as entertain. That said, the album is as funky as it is strident, and innovatively soulful – it's got raw and heavy drums and horns the burst in, but there's also roomier, slinkier grooves created to frame Byrd's voice and mood. The arrangements are by Chico O'Farrill and he really delivers. Gary Byrd's storytelling and spoken delivery leads the way, though – righteousness without bitterness, angry yet agreeable – truly brilliant and unique work! Titles include "To You Beautiful Black Sister", "If The People Only Knew (Power To The People)", "Shining Black Prince", "Country Preacher", and "How Long My People" and more. This great 2011 CD edition from Get On Down includes the bonus "Soul Travelin' Pt I (The GBE)" and "Soul Travelin' Pt I (The GBE)". CD

✨✧ Daniel Carter, Patrick Holmes, Matthew Putnam, Hilliard Greene, & Federico UghiTelepathic Mysteries Vol 1 ... LP
577, 2020. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Nice work from a quintet who are also known as the Telepathic Band – a reference to the way that the players can improvise at such a natural, intuitive level! The lineup here features Patrick Holmes on clarinet, Matthew Putman on piano, Hilliard Greene on bass, Federico Ughi on drums, and Daniel Carter on saxes, clarinet, and trumpet – working together in ways that often have the two reed players interlocking nicely, in criss-crossing lines – while the piano percolates beneath and between them, sparked on by bolder efforts from the bass and the drums. The songs are relatively slow-building – finding form through thought – and titles include "Nun Zero", "While You Snap", "Lore Levels", and "S Cape Cinemagic". LP, Vinyl record album

Daniel Carter/Matthew Shipp/William Parker/Gerald CleaverWelcome Adventure Vol 1 ... CD
577, 2020. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
One of those records that just makes us say "wow" right from the very first note – a perfect showcase for all musicians involved, and a really mighty meeting of the creative minds! We've really loved the strong return to form that Matthew Shipp has given us on piano in recent years – and of course, the basswork of William Parker is always tremendous – but they both somehow rise even more to the top alongside the drums of Gerald Cleaver and tenor, trumpet, and flute of Daniel Carter – in a session that's wonderfully spiritual, very rhythmic, and often quite straight at times! There's a balance between the avant impulses of the players and the collective action of the group – almost recalling the loft jazz years, but more contemporarily righteous too – on titles that include "Majestic Travel Agency", "Scintillate", and "Ear-Regularities". ChangeChange Of Heart (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic/Big Break (UK), 1984. New Copy ... $13.99 18.99
A game-changing album from Change – a real breakthrough for the early 80s international soul combo! Change Of Heart has some great production by Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis – and on top of that, it's perhaps the best set of songs the group had recorded to to date. Jam/Lewis wrote half the tunes and produced most of the album, which is front-loaded with some of the best of them. They kick up the beat them the big hit "Change Of Heart", along with the great "You Are My Melody", "True Love", "It Burns Me Up", and the more mellow "Say You Love Me Again", the album's opener. Change's own Timmy Allen's songs are great, too – and the record is remarkably consistent as a whole. Slick without sacrificing the soul, and with the bouncing mid 80s Jam/Lewis production vibe that's sounds as fresh as ever! Other titles include "Lovely Lady", "Got My Eyes On You" and "It Burns Me Up". This Big Break UK remastered version has 4 bonus tracks: "Change Of Heart (Single Version)", ""You Are My Melody (Single Version)", "It Burns Me Up (Single Version)" and "Change Of Heart (12" Alternate Dance Version)". Charles EarlandCharles Earland In Concert Live At The Lighthouse/Kharma ... CD
Prestige, 1972/1974. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
A great set that brings together 2 live albums from organist Charles Earland! Live At The Lighthouse is a real killer – with that tight jazzy groove that Earland had on his first few albums for Prestige, a mix of jazz funk and soul jazz, handled with an incredible touch on the organ! The band includes lesser known players like trumpeter Elmer Coles, alto player James Vass, and conga player Kenneth Nash – but they all groove very tightly, and provide a perfect foil for Earland's soaring solos. Includes a great version of "Moontrane", plus the groovers "Spinky", "Smiling", and "Black Gun". Kharma is a spiritual live set recorded at the 1974 Montreux festival, and one that has Earland opening into the freer sound that dominated his playing during the mid 70's – with lots of modal grooves, and those long soulful leaps that made his solos always so great! Jon Faddis, Clifford Adams, and Dave Hubbard are in the lineup, and tracks include "Morgan", "Kharma", and his "Suite for Martin Luther King". 11 tracks in all! CD

Grant GreenGrant's First Stand (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1961. Used ... $14.99
Grant's First Stand – and a mighty one at that! The set was recorded when Green was a guitarist fresh on the scene – showing up in New York from St Louis, where he'd been discovered by Lou Donaldson and brought to Blue Note with great acclaim! For this first date, Green's heard in really stripped-down company – just Hammond from Baby Face Willette and drums from Ben Dixon – a spare trio setting that makes for a madly cooking little record, and one without some of the smoother edges of Greens' later years! The set's as raw and soulful as Willette's own Blue Note classics – and is very much in the side of the spectrum that Donaldson was bringing to the label at a time – a much-needed dose of new energy from the Prestige Records side of the tracks. Every track's a winner – and titles include "Blues For Willarene", "Baby's Minor Lope", "Miss Ann's Tempo", and "A Wee Bit O Green". CD

Clay HammondCome Into These Arms Of Mine ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $22.99
An overlooked gem from the equally-overlooked Clay Hammond – a sweet 70s groover that offers up a great mix of modern and deep soul modes! Clay's vocals are still every bit as great as on some of his earlier soul singles, but the arrangements push things into tighter territory that's mighty nice – a lot like some of the later Hi Records work from Al Green – or even better, like that great sound that Otis Clay hit at the end of the 70s! Like Otis Clay's best records from the time, Clay's vocals stay nice and real – wrapped up in a sweet mix of blues and soul – and although the backings often hit a warmer midtempo groove, they're never overdone or commercial at all – just a maturation of southern soul modes – in ways that kind of point towards the later Malaco scene, while avoiding any of its cliches. Titles include "Tuning Up", "Rap On Wood", "Don't Stop Your Love", "Come Into These Arms Of Love", "Part Time Love", "Love Won't Let Me Stay Away From You", and "Women Are Human". CD

Pointer SistersBreak Out (2CD deluxe edition) ... CD
Planet/Big Break (UK), 1983/1984. New Copy 2 CDs ... $19.99
The album's no breakout for the Pointer Sisters, as the trio were already at the top of the charts when the set was released – but the whole thing does find a great way to keep the grooves coming in the group's lasting relationship with producer Richard Perry! There's plenty of 80s elements here – basslines, beats, and keyboards – moving the group way past some of the club and pop modes of the 70s – and keeping them perfectly poised for long-term crossover fame for years to come! Case in point is the album's long-running hit "Jump (For My Love)", nestled alongside other cuts that include "Automatic", "I'm So Excited", "I Need You", "Neutron Dance", "Easy Persuasion", "Baby Come And Get It", "Telegraph Your Love", and "Operator". This fully loaded 2011 2CD Big Break UK edition features the full 1983 and 1984 editions (the latter with a remixes) and more than a dozen addition alternate versions and 12" dance mixes. 34 tracks on 2CDs! My God, what a record! This one's genius through and through – a set that sometimes gets eclipsed in the brilliance to come, but which is easily one of our favorites ever by Steely Dan! There's a beautifully focused feel here – thanks to Donald Fagan's incredible lead vocals, and a sense of songwriting that never takes any left turns – no odd forays into different styles or previous genres, just all steeped in Steely, as the group should be by this point! John Klemmer turns in some wonderful sax work that really helps shape the sound, and titles include the wonderful "Caves Of Altimira", "Kid Charlemagne", "Don't Take Me Alive", "Green Earrings", and "The Royal Scam". ✨✧ Paul DesmondPaul Desmond & The Modern Jazz Quartet ... CD
Red Baron, 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
A rare pairing, and a great one too – as Paul Desmond joins the Modern Jazz Quartet for a unique live set from the early 70s – with a great sound that's even more wonderful than we expected! Desmond is always great no matter what the setting – but he sounds especially nice working here alongside the mix of piano and vibes offered by the MJQ – in a style that's subtle, but never as sleepy as some of their other records from the period, thanks to some sharper edges from Desmond. The alto sax really brings something new to this record – carving out snakey little lines that glow and glimmer with a nicely subdued soul – and in a way, the MJQ really just seem to be holding back in a role where they're Paul's accompanists, and not the main stars of the set. Titles include "Greensleeves", "Blue Dove", "You Go To My Head", "East Of The Sun", "Here's That Rainy Day", "Bag's New Groove", and "Jesus Christ Superstar". CD

✨✧ Harlan EllisonPulling A Train – Violent Stories Of Naked Passions (paperback) ... Book
Norton/Kicks, 2012. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Gritty prose from the legendary Harlan Ellison – a writer known best for his science fiction work, but who's represented here by some very early material that's plenty violent and salacious! The writing should be taken in the spirit of the title and cover – and Harlan himself does a great job of situating the work in his introduction to the book – telling the tale of the somewhat sleazy roots of this read, which is almost as titillating as the stories themselves! Yet despite the obvious apology for the schlock quality of the stories (some weren't even originally billed under Ellison's own name!) – there's a real force to the writing throughout – a youthful, powerful feel that bridges the gap between classic noir and underground exploitation – as you'll find in stories like "Sex Gang", "Jeannie With The Bedroom Eyes", "A Girl Named Poison", and "Both Ends Of The Candle". Norton/Kicks, 2012. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Kim Fowley, an author? Stranger things have happened – and given Fowley's penchant for putting his finger in just about every pie that came within reach, the whole thing's no surprise at all! The book is a stunning account of Fowley's important years in the music business – working in the sometimes lowest reaches of the LA scene, yet sometimes hitting the highest heights too – all told in really interesting detail, with a pacing that's completely unique! At lots of points, it kind of feels like Kim's telling you the story of his life over a few dozen drinks at the bar – with all the tangents you might expect – but at other times, there's this lucidity that's right in line with the Fowley genius in the studio – that way of being and going crazy while still holding all your cool – summed up perfectly in these few lines near the end of the book: "Well this is my version of what happened to me. I don't know if it really happened or not, but I think it did. I'm holding back a lot of stuff because it's too overwhelming in its darkness and it would be a sad read." Book

MCA/Hip-O Select, 1989. Used ... Out Of Stock
A previously-unissued album from Funkadelic – originally done for MCA Records at the end of the 80s, but only now finally seeing the light of day! The set's a great continuation of the P-Funk groove that George Clinton set down on his solo albums for Capitol during the earlier part of the decade – and it shows a bit of a transformation of that sound towards some of the (then) contemporary funk modes in the post-Prince generation. Instrumentation is a bit more programmed than before, but there's still a very festive P-Funk approach going on – thanks to vocals from Garry Shider, Donnie Sterling, and Mallia Franklin – and instrumentation from players DeWayne McKnight, Chong Spradley, and a young Amp Fiddler! Titles include "Nose Bleed", "Sunshine Of Your Love", "Jugular", "Some Fresh Delic", "Primal Instinct", and "Freaks Bearing Gifts". CD also features 4 mixes of "By Way Of The Drum" – from the 12" release of the music, the only MCA issue of material from these sessions! CD

Norton/Kicks, 2011. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Yeah, THIS is the Nick Tosches we want! Tosches has a way of chronicling the diseased, mobbed up underbelly of the 20th Century music rackets that's simply unrivaled – it's gut level brilliant and street smart writing like no one does anymore. Save The Last Dance For Satan is a more fleshed out and newly spun continuation of material published more than a decade ago as Hipsters And Hoodlums, in Vanity Fair magazine (boy, mainstream magazine content sure has changed a bunch since 2000) – chronicling the sleaze and criminality at the core of the 50s & 60s music biz. It's great! His best stuff has often read with the sweaty, intoxicating allure of seedy pulp storytelling, so it's an utmost pleasure to see his work put out by Kicks Books - which literally puts Tosches' work in just that kind of old school hip pocket paperback! He joins Andre Williams (whose "Jailbait" single is mentioned early in this book as the badass antidote to mid 50s candy-coated rock & roll that it most certainly was) and Sun Ra at Kicks. A couple of Tosches' more recent books have been a tough slog – more about his own near obsessive search for impossibly hidden subjects than anything else – but this slim 120 page tome is the opposite – it has us slobbering for more. Damn, are these guys funky! Shaolin Temple Defenders may have a Wu Tang-like name, but their sound is solid 70s funk throughout – hard-hitting, classic-styled, and right up there with the best of the contemporary deep funk underground! The group have plenty of JBs in their approach, but also bring in some surprising deep soul moments too – thanks to some strong lead vocals that make the group as equally grounded in soul as they are in funk. Savoy/Nippon (Japan), 1951/1952. Used ... $4.99
Some of the earliest material ever recorded by the Modern Jazz Quartet – early 50s sides that were originally issued as 78rpm singles, then brought together in this self-titled LP! Some of the material was first released under the name of the Milt Jackson Quartet – but featured the lineup of Jackson on vibes, John Lewis piano, Percy Heath bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums. Yet other tracks on the set have bassist Ray Brown in for Heath and drummer Al Jones in for Clarke – both players who make for a slightly different groove in the company of Jackson and Lewis. Tunes are short, but already show that Lewis love of chromatic tones – and titles include "Yesterdays", "Love Me Pretty Baby", "Milt Meets Sid", "Moving Nicely", "D&E", "True Blues", and "Autumn Breeze". Dianne ReevesLittle Moonlight ... CD
Blue Note, 2003. Used ... $2.99
Dianne Reeves – as lovely as ever, perhaps even more so – as the set's a nicely stripped-down session that really showcases her best side! The tunes are spare and simple small combo numbers – mostly with piano trio backing, but also including a bit of occasional trumpet and guitar. Dianne performs wonderfully on a mix of standards served up with a heck of a lot more soul and expression than we're used to hearing from the tunes – and production on the set is by Arif Mardin, showing the same simple elegance that he brought to classic work by Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan. Titles include "I'm All Smiles", "Loads Of Love", "Skylark", "We'll Be Together Again", "What A Little Moonlight Can Do", and "Reflections". CD

Bear Family (Germany), 1968. Used ... $14.99
A massive batch of music – and almost as worth it for the overall package as it is for the great tunes inside! Like other volumes in this series, this set is beautifully put together – not only stuffed with an amazing array of classic soul from a key year in the 60s – but also done with a full color booklet that's over 60 pages long – filled with track-by-track notes on the tunes, and filled with great photos, images, and historical data! The whole thing's a perfect soul music time capsule – with the depth of production that we've always loved in Bear Family releases for other genres. Titles include "Take Time To Know Her" by Percy Sledge, "Stay In My Corner (single edit)" by The Dells, "Cloud Nine" by The Temptations, "I'm In Love" by Wilson Pickett, "Tighten Up (part 1)" by Archie Bell & The Drells, "Slip Away" by Clarence Carter, "Grazing In The Grass" by Hugh Masekela, "Funky Street" by Arthur Conley, "The Snake" by Al Wilson, "Girl Watcher" by The O'Kaysions, "Say It Loud I'm Black & I'm Proud" by James Brown, and "I've Never Found A Girl" by Eddie Floyd. ✨✧ Melvin SparksSparks/Akilah ... CD
BGP (UK), 1970/1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 great ones from funky guitarist Melvin Sparks – back to back on a single CD! The Sparks album is a killer – one of the best from Prestige during the runaway classic years of the early 70s! Melvin Sparks is a genius guitarist, with a talent as rich as that of Grant Green, who's probably his most immediate precursor. He'd played in the groups of Lou Donaldson and Jack McDuff during the late 60s, but by the time of this release, he was breaking out on his own as one of the hottest funk guitarists in jazz. The group's an excellent one – and features Idris Muhammad on funky drums, Virgil Jones on trumpet, and the great Leon Spencer on organ. The tracks are nice and long, especially the original "The Stinker", and the cool cover of "Spill the Wine". Also includes a great funky cover of Sly Stone's "Thank You Falletinme Be Mice Elf". Akilah is an album that was cut for Prestige during the years when they were expanding the lineup on the albums a bit past the usual soul jazz quintet format – but even with a bigger group, the album's still got a great array of players, including Leon Spencer on organ, Idris Muhammad on drums, Virgil Jones on trumpet, Dave Hubbard on tenor, Hubert Laws on flute, and Sonny Fortune on alto. Melvin's single-line guitar work is incredibly great – very much like Grant Green's during the early 70s – and titles include "Love the Life You Live", "Akilah", and "All Wrapped Up". CD

✨✧ Frank WessFlute Juice ... LP
Progressive, 1981. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An all-flute album from Frank Wess – a great small combo date that really gets at the lyrical modes in Frank's style! Wess had been playing flute on record for over 20 years by the time of this early 80s date – but there's a really special feeling to the album that brings out some of Frank's more sensitive, personal qualities – a mode that's quite free from the Basie-tinged work of his youth, and awash with wonderful colors and tones that really show a great deal of development on his instrument. Wess would often balance a bit of tenor on most sessions alongside the flute – but here, it's almost as if his continued focus on flute allows things to be even more expressive than usual. The rest of the group features Tommy Flanagan on piano, Chuck Wayne on guitar, George Mraz on bass, and Ben Riley on drums – and titles include "Nada Mas", "Battle Royal", "Spring Is Here", "Riled Up", and "Lover Come Back To Me". An all-electronic set from Gerald Cleaver, but one that's got the same sort of rhythmic pulse as his better-known work on the drums – a record that, in fact, almost feels as if Cleaver is triggering various electronic elements with live work on the drums – or, more likely, using live electronics to recreate some of his energy on the acoustic instrument! The tunes have a very dark vibe – sheets of noise and sound pounding out together in waves of sonic intensity. Titles include "Tomasz", "Blown", "Amidst Curses", "Jackie's Smiles", and the three-part "Signs". CD

Bande GamboaHorizonte – Revamping Rare Gems From Guinea Bissau & Cabo Verde ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2020. New Copy ... $18.99
A really fantastic idea for a project – and one that comes off even better than we would have guessed – new versions of classic grooves from the nations of Cabo Verde and Guinea Bissau, performed by a really well-matched group of singers and musicians, in a mode that's quite different than the usual revival record of this nature! The songs are definitely classics, but the presentation is very contemporary – directed by producer Guts, and Francisco Sousa, with a special ear for avoiding the sorts of cliches that both mar a project like this, and some of the stereotypes that get reinforced by reissues on the market. Instead, there's a fresh criss-crossing of cultures, but one that never waters down the roots at all – maybe a bit like some of the best Parisian productions of the 70s and 80s post-colonial years. Titles include "Dunia Be Tene", "Riba Bass Di Mi", "Citi Ku Liti", "No Guinea", "Mulato Ferrera", "Segunda", and "Di Mas". CD

✨✧ Count BasieBasie (aka E=MC2) ... CD
Roulette, 1957. Used ... $6.99
One of THE seminal Basie albums of all time – and a masterful pairing between the Count and arranger Neal Hefti! Hefti has an amazing ear for the Basie groove, and he works here to re-fit the overall sound of the group with a tighter, more fluid approach – one that ensured that they'd be alive and booming well into the 60s. The Hefti touch is one that's slightly lighter than the Basie of before – one that assumes the bump at the bottom, but never overdoes it – and instead almost uses the sound of no sound at all to carry the rhythm – while the horns at the top of the group are vamping around in these majestic charts that break out into fantastically searing solos. Basie's on piano, natch – and other players include Thad Jones, Joe Newman, Henry Coker, Al Grey, Frank Wess, Frank Foster, and Eddie Lockjaw Davis. Titles are all brilliant Hefti originals – and include "After Supper", "Flight Of The Foo Birds", "Teddy The Toad", "Splanky", "Fantail", and "Lil Darlin". CD

Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1981. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
Freddie Hubbard makes a sweet splash for the 80s in this great little set – one of his last electric outings before a return to more acoustic modes! The vibe's a bit leaner than some of his late 70s albums, with most of the electricity coming from the bass, and from the keyboards by Chester Thompson or Louis Small – but the record's definitely got that soaring sense of flow that Freddie brought to his best work of this nature – that new sound he unlocked during the 70s, which finally seemed to find the right voice for that mighty horn of his! Jeanne Tracy sings a bit of vocals on the set, bringing in a touch of soul to the album – and titles include the stepping classic "Touchdown" – plus "Splash", "Mystic Lady", "I'm Yours", "Jarri", "You're Gonna Lose Me", and "Sister Stine". One of Antonio Carlos Jobim's greatest records – and a perfect blend of his subtle bossa genius with the moody electric sound of CTI! Jobim plays electric and acoustic piano, guitar, and sings a bit – and Deodato handled the arrangements with a breezy brilliance that matches all the magic of Jobim's wonderful compositions, but gives them a slightly more fluid feel too – in a way that's somewhat more sophisticated than the sound of Jobim's previous CTI outings – Tide and Wave. Other players on the album include Joe Farrell on soprano sax, Hubert Laws on flute, and Airto on percussion – and there's a great mix of Brazilian and American styles on the set – electric, sinister, breezy, and always wonderful! The rest of the group features Christian Ramond on bass and Klaus Kugel on drums – both players who seem to step back and give the vibes and clarinet center space in the spotlight, yet know how to add just the right amount when needed. Bassist Joelle Leandre is always a warmly collaborative player – an artist whose own sound is tremendous, but also seems to bring out the best in her collaborators – which is definitely the case in this series of live material recorded at the Krakow Jazz Festival in Poland! CD1 features Leandre in a quartet – working alongside Zibniew Kozera on bass, Mateusz Rybicki on clarinet, and Zlatko Kaucic on drums – both of the bassists creating this wonderful bottom sound, resonating together and breaking apart – while the clarinet gets a chance to go on all these free flights of sonic exploration! CD2 features Leandre duetting with drummer Zlatko Kacic – in ways that are completely different from the pair's sound in the quartet – often balanced beautifully between tentative spaciousness that allows all these unusual sounds to slip forth and find a unique sort of resonance. CD3 features work from Rafal Mazur on acoustic bass guitar – an instrument that's a great choice to accompany Leandre, and helps her further express herself in those unusual but warm tones that make her work on the bass so unique compared to other improvisers of her generation. Massive Miami grooves from Robert "Rocky" Mizell – not one of the Mizell brothers from the west coast, but a Florida artist with a sound that's equally nice! The album's the only one we've ever seen from Rocky, and it's got a sweet TK Records groove all the way through – rhythms that are definitely on the funkier side of Miami soul, arranged by Rocky himself, and produced to perfection by Willie Clarke! Heavy fuzz from late 60s Brazil – a Tropicalia-era album, but one with a slightly more mainstream groove – one that mixes elements of regional music with psychedelic elements and bouncy, mod-styled backings! The approach is somewhat like the work going on over at EMI/Odeon during the time – although there's certainly a trippier side to the record as well, thanks to arrangements from Rogerio Duprat, Damiano Cozzela, and Julio Medagalia. There's a fair bit of groovers on the record – although in a somewhat offbeat mode – nestled nicely next to a few headier tunes that help balance out the whole set wonderfully. Wilson McKinleySpirit Of Elijah ... LP
Lion, 1971. Near Mint- ... $19.99
An obscure bit of Christian rock from the Seattle scene at the start of the 70s – but a record that's got a lot more to offer than just that unusual pedigree! Don't think "Jesus rock", think instead of some of the more laidback, open-minded singer/songwriter material of the Bay Area scene – especially Marin County, with its elements of rootsy instrumentation and warmly collaborative spirit in the musicianship – a perfect fit for the gently spiritual messages of Wilson McKinley, which are mostly aimed at living a good life with a clear conscience. Production is lean, but in a great way – and the strength of the music's spirit comes through wonderfully on cuts that include "Crown Of Glory", "All My Life", "Tree Of Life", "One In The Spirit", and "It's Up To You". Frank ZappaZappa In New York ... LP
DiscReet, 1977. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
Frank Zappa live in the 70s – working with a surprisingly hip large ensemble, with all the sharp changes and unusual moments of his classic studio albums! Like some of Zappa's other concert performances, there's an approach that steps a few years back – clearly to please the group coming to hear their favorites, but in a way that also offers up a nice sharpening-up of the music too – especially given that the whole thing's happening live on stage! There's some great jazz help here – horns from The Brecker Brothers, Lou Marini, Ronnie Cuber, and Tom Malone – plus wonderful vibes from Dave Samuels and keyboards from Eddie Jobson – and even a bit of narration from Don Pardo. Titles include "I'm The Slime", "Titties & Beer", "Cruisin For Burgers", "The Illinois Enema Bandit", "Punky's Whips", "Big Leg Emma", and "Sofa". LP, Vinyl record album
(Censored version – without "Punky's Whips".)

VariousGood God – A Gospel Funk Hymnal ... CD
Numero, 1970s. New Copy ... $7.99 18.98
A killer killer compilation – the sort we've been dying to own for years! It's a well known fact that there's plenty of funky nuggets hidden amidst 70s gospel recordings – massive grooves and break-heavy tracks that rank right up there with the best indie funk from the same time. Yet tracking down these tunes has always been plenty tough – given that most gospel records sold in different circles, had different distribution, and often are less easy to decipher for the crate digger than more conventional funk and soul. Enter the folks at Numero – who have really gone all out this time around, and dug through piles and piles of rare gospel records to come up with a whopping batch of great tracks! This set is definitely ground zero for getting into funky gospel – and it's filled with far more obscure work than the Soul Gospel set on Soul Jazz – all indie numbers from small labels that only got minor distribution at the time. As usual with Numero, the notes and package match the soulful depth and righteousness of the music – and the set is one of the most perfectly wrapped-up genre compilations we've ever seen! 18 tracks in all – with titles that include "I Thank The Lord" by Mighty Voices Of Wonder, "This Old World Is Going Down" by The Modulations, "Look Where He Brought Us" by The Apostles Of Music, "Thoughs (sic) Were The Days" by LaVice & Company, "Bad Situation" by 5 Spiritual Tones, "God Been Good To Me" by Mighty Walker Brothers, "O Yes My Lord" by Voices Of Conquest, "We Don't Love Enough" by Triumphs, "Heaven On Their Minds" by Sam Taylor, "God Will Dry My Weeping Eyes" by Horace Family, and "I Call Him" by Masonic Wonders. VariousPeace Chant Vol 3 – Raw, Deep, & Spiritual Jazz (with download) ... LP
Tramp (Germany), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $19.99 22.99
A fantastic collection, and one that goes deep deep into the farther reaches of the spiritual scene in the 70s – tracks that are way more obscure than music on labels like Strata East or Impulse, and which really show an evolution of music ideas at the time! The core style is jazz, but there are also other elements at play too – and the tracks are a mix of instrumentals and vocals, the latter of which have an especially wonderful quality! Some of the tunes are nicely gentle, almost quiet in spirit – while others have a bolder, more political approach – and the mix of tunes throughout is very fresh, and maybe even better than the first collection in this series. Titles on vinyl vol 3 include "Mother's Day" by Lenny Marcus Trio, "Africa The Beautiful" by Roland Hayes, "Muhammad Ali" by Jule Farmer, "Fulive" by Supa Lowery Brothers, "Themes & Variations" by Black Is, "Natural Life" by Natural Life, "Heal It" by Rama Dyushambee, and "Catechism For D" by The Hippest Set. ✨✧ Paul DesmondDesmond Blue ... LP
RCA, 1962. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A cool jazz classic from altoist Paul Desmond and guitarist Jim Hall! The album was recorded under Desmond's name, but Hall's the guitarist throughout, and his playing lends an indescribably wonderful edge to the set, making the album a real team effort! Unlike other RCA sides by Hall and Desmond, this one features the pair with larger string backings by Bob Prince, which create a dreamy pillow for alto and guitar to solo across. Titles include the Desmond originals "Late Lament" and "Desmond Blue" – plus "Ill Wind", "My Funny Valentine", and "Like Someone In Love". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lee MorganTwo Sides Of Lee Morgan (aka Expoobident/The Young Lions) ... LP
Trip, Early 60s. Near Mint- 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
70s two-fer that brings together early 60s Vee Jay albums – recorded around the time of his best early work for Blue Note, and with a good hard group that includes Clifford Jordan on tenor, Eddie Higgins on piano, and Art Blakey on drums. A tight set of tracks that includes originals by Jordan, Higgins, Morgan, and Wayne Shorter – with titles like "Fire", "Lost & Found", "The Hearing", "Triple Track", and "Expoobidient" – all burners that really sum up the majestic power of the young Lee Morgan at his best! "Young Lions" is a stunning session from 1960 not only coined the term "young lions" in jazz, but offers up a pack of them that any modern players would be hard-pressed to beat. Trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenorist Wayne Shorter, and pianist Bobby Timmons take a break from the Jazz Messengers to join altoist Frank Strozier in the frontline on this fantastic set of tracks that ring with a lyrical beauty hardly surpassed by any other hardbop album. Shorter wrote nearly all of the tracks, and the set list includes some of his best-ever work, like "Seeds Of Sin", "Scourin'", and "Peaches & Cream" – all beautiful tracks that are completely sublime. The group's completed by Bob Cranshaw on bass and Albert Heath on drums – and other titles include "Fat Lady", and "That's Right". LP, Vinyl record album
