SF Jazz, 2006. Used 2 CDs ... $24.99
The music of Herbie Hancock, but not like you might be thinking – as the arrangements here are all new, and done by Gil Goldstein – performed by a great lineup of the SF Jazz Collective, along with some of their own music too! The group here features Nicholas Payton on trumpet, Miguel Zenon on alto, Renee Rosnes on piano, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Joshua Redman on tenor and soprano, Matt Penman on bass, Andre Hayward on trombone, and Eric Harland on drums – nearly all of whom contribute a tune, in a lineup that features the Herbie Hancock tunes "Maiden Voyage", "Riot", "Tell Me A Bedtime Story", "Actual Proof", "Little One", and "And What If I Don't". Mike WestbrookMarching Song Vol 1 ... LP
Deram (UK), 1969. Sealed ... $14.99
The brilliant 3rd album from Mike Westbrook – a sharp-edged, two volume set with a scathing anti-war theme! The work is Westbrook's first total-concept album, and it's still one of his best – written with an edge that's free from some of the more whimsical touches that showed up in Mike's later years, and played by a core group of British avant soloists with searing intensity! You've never heard large group scoring like this – bold, ambitious, and quite different than most of what's come before. And although the whole thing sounds as if it's going to fall apart at any moment, it always snaps back into a sharp focus just in the nick of time – with brilliant results that bring the same sense of surprise that you might get from, say, a classic album from Charles Mingus or Archie Shepp! Players include Kenny Wheeler and Henry Lowther on trumpets, Mike Gibbs and Paul Rutherford on trombones, John Surman on baritone and soprano sax, Mike Osborne on alto and clarinet, Alan Skidmore on tenor and flute, Brian Smith on tenor, and Harry Miller and Barre Phillips on bass. Titles on this first volume include "Landscape", "Hooray", "Other World", and "Marching Song". LP, Vinyl record album
(180 gram Audio Clarity reissue. Cover has a light corner bump, but looks great overall.)

✨✧ Hank MobleyCaddy For Daddy ... CD
Blue Note, 1965. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest Blue Note albums of all time – a record that's even better than the look of it's cover – which is already pretty darn classic! Hank Mobley had been making records for Blue Note for a number of years before this set – but Caddy For Daddy is one in which he really takes off – mixing earlier hardbop modes with a more complex approach to both rhythm and lyricism – matched with some wonderful work from Lee Morgan in the frontline, who was also really hitting new heights at the time – in a group that also includes Curtis Fuller on trombone, McCoy Tyner on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. The group plays this amazing mix of soul jazz and modal grooves that sets a whole new standard in the Blue Note catalog – and every cut is a winner, with titles that include "Venus Di Mildew", "The Morning After", "3rd Time Around", and "Ace Deuce Trey". Fantastic material all the way through, with tracks that will stay in your head for years – and one of the greatest jazz album covers ever! CD

✨✧ VariousBrown Sugar – Latin Breakbeats, Basslines & Boogaloo ... CD
Harmless (UK), 1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sweet funky Latin – lifted from the glory days of the late 60s Latin Soul scene! The set is the 3rd in Harmless' dip into the Latin crates – following in the tradition of Broasted Or Fried and Freak Off with a stunning collection of 14 rare tunes, the likes of which will make you a boogaloo fanatic for ever! The selection is superb – with a wealth of tracks from the Fania/Tico family of labels, plus others from rarer sources, all culled together with great notes, a nice cover, and way better sound quality than most other Latin reissues on the market. Heavy congas collide with rolling piano, electric bass, and plenty of funky horns. English vocals prevail – and the grooves are extremely soulful throughout! Titles include "You've Been Talkin Bout Me Baby" by Ray Terrace, "I'll Be A Happy Man" by The Latin Blues Band, "Funky UP" by Mongo Santamaria, "Big T" by Tito Ramos, "Kenyatta" by Orquesta Joe Cain, "Taking Over" by Ralph Robles, "It's Not What You Say" by Louie Ramirez, "I Want You" by The Alexander Review, "Monkey See Monkey Do" by New Swing Sexted, and "Guajira Boogaloo" by Coco Lagos y Su Orates. David Boykin & Expanse All StarsExpanse All Stars – Solar Suite At 63rd Street Beach ... CD
Sonic Healing Ministries, 2020. New Copy ... $6.99
A great reworking of the extended Solar Suite by Chicago saxophonist David Boykin – issued many years back in a studio version, and presented here in a bold new take done at the same 63rd Street Beach House that used to host performances by Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble! Boykin is tremendous here as a key soloist – and the group is led by Renee Baker as part of the Chicago Modern Orchestra Project – although the ensemble here is just a septet, with work from Joshua Abrams on bass, Jim Baker on keyboards, Alex Wing on guitar, Tony Herrera on trombone, Quentin Coaxum on trumpet, and Marcus Evans on drums! The set's worth it alone for Boykin's wonderful tenor work, but the whole group is fantastic as well – soaring up with a mighty spirit that lives up the legacy of the storied space of the recording – on titles that include "Midnight & Sunrise", "Midday", "Sunset", and "Enocturnal Sun". Duduka Da Fonseca & Quarteto UniversalYes ... CD
Sunnyside, 2022. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
Drummer Duduka Da Fonseca may be one of the few players to carry forth the raw legacy of Brazilian jazz from the samba/bossa instrumental world of the 60s – particularly the kind of sounds that you'd hear from some of the trios of that generation! Duduka handles the kit here with the dexterity we always loved in the work of drummer Milton Banana – but he's also got a wider sound that shows the changes in inspiration over the decades – carried forth here strongly by the always-marvelous piano of Helio Alves, and colored in by work on guitar from Vinicius Gomes and bass from Gili Lopes. Titles include "Samba Novo", "West 83rd Street", "Dona Maria", "Bebe", "Exodo", "Lilia", "Transition", and "A Correnteza". CD

✨✧ Jackie McLeanNew Soil ... LP
Blue Note, 1959. Good ... Just Sold Out!
If you ever needed a record to re-remind you of the genius of Jackie McLean, this Blue Note classic may well be it! At first glance, the session appears to be the usual sort of date – a quintet outing, with help from Donald Byrd on trumpet, Walter Davis on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Pete LaRoca on drums – yet as with all of McLean's best moments on records, the album explodes with freshly creative energy from the start – getting way past any easy expectation in the way it sets up the groove and delivers the sound! Jackie's tone is amazing – very modern at times, yet with all the soul of hardbop – and although the rhythms are relatively straight, there's always a slight setting-free at points – that pre-new thing groove that McLean further explored on records like Capuchin Swing or Fickle Sonance. The sound is amazing throughout – and titles are all originals by McLean and Davis – great gems that include "Davis Cup", "Sweet Cakes", "Hip Strut", "Minor Apprehension", and "Greasy". LP, Vinyl record album

Rasputin's StashRasputin's Stash ... LP
Cotillion/Cosmic Rock (Italy), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.99
A killer debut from Rasputin Stash – a funky group who work with all the long-haired inspiration you'd expect from their name! The groove is a mix of guitars and tight horns – undercut by the kind of heavy basslines that later made the group a good fit for Curtom Records, and lots of cool percussion touches that pepper the bottom of the rhythms nicely – with a pretty spontaneous feel! At times, there's almost a Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band vibe to the record, but mixed with some of the trippier influences of the Westbound crew – especially on the guitar – and like those artists, these guys have no trouble at all dipping into a touch of rock here and there to trip out their groove. Titles include "Mr Cool", "You Are My Flower", "Dookey Shoe", "I Want To Say You're Welcome", "Take Me On Back", and "Freaks Prayer". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Burton GreeneOne World Music ... CD
Cat/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1984. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the warmest, most beautiful albums we've ever heard from pianist Burton Greene – a set that's got a nicely unique vibe in comparison to some of his other albums of the time – maybe a bit more of a swing at times, and a nice current of soul as well! One of the strongest elements of the record is the work on reeds from Fred Leeflang – a player we don't know at all, but who plays soprano, alto, and tenor with a nice rasp in his tone, and a good sense of angles – but at a level that's never too far out, and often matched well with the rhythms from Raoul Van Der Weide on bass and Clarence Becton on drums. Greene is a perfect bridge between everything – with a majestic command of the keys and often a strong modal sensibility – on titles that include "Round Robbin", "Portuguese Impressions", "Cokertme", "63rd & Cottage Grove", and "When You're In Front Get Off My Back". ✨✧ Johnny GriffinLittle Giant ... LP
Riverside, 1959. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of Johnny Griffin's hard blowing LPs as a leader for Jazzland – recorded with a crack lineup that includes Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, Wynton Kelly on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Albert Heath on drums! This is the kind of work that the term "hard bop" was coined for – sharp-edged jazz at its best – informed strongly by earlier bop and modern modes, but also played with a deeper dose of soul overall. The six players come together perfectly throughout – working with a tightness that matches most Blue Note work of the time – and titles are a great set of tracks that includes 3 by Chicago pianist Norman Simmons, and 1 by the great Babs Gonzales. Tunes include "Olive Refractions", "The Message", "Lonely One", "Playmates", and "63rd Street Theme". LP, Vinyl record album
(80s OJC pressing. Cover has light wear and aging.)
