Titles include "Teo's Bag", "Side Car (1 & 2)", "Sanctuary", "Guinnevere", "Circle In The Round", and "Two Bass Hit". LP, Vinyl record album

Gene RussellTakin Care Of Business ... LP
Dot, 1966. Very Good ... $4.99
Early work from pianist Gene Russell – cut long before his bigger fame in the 70s! Long before he became the empresario behind the legendary Black Jazz label in the 70s, Gene cut this album of mellow soul jazz piano tracks, live at Memory Lane Supper Club in LA. The set's not as hard-hitting or funky as some of his 70s work – and has a feel that's more typical of 60s albums by Les McCann or other inside soul jazz players. Titles include "Tenaya", "Norwegian Wood", "Now's The Time", and "Takin' Care Of Business". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dave BrubeckOld Sounds From San Francisco (10 inch LP) ... LP
Fantasy, Early 50s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Pretty nice stuff from Brubeck's early years! The record features the work of his octet – a group that gives a rare opportunity to hear Brubeck in a large group setting, and one that also features work by Cal Tjader on drums (!), plus Dick Collins and Paul Desmond on their usual instruments. Titles include "The Prisoner's Song", "Schizophrenic Scherzo", "Playland At The Beach", and "Serenades Suite". Nice Arnold Roth cover too! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Turrentine, & Herbie HancockIn Concert Vol 2 ... LP
CTI, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A sublime live moment from the CTI scene of the 70s – an album that brings together some of the label's best lead players, into a special live supergroup that stretches out in a mighty nice way! In case you ever though the CTI genius came from the studio production of Creed Taylor, think again – as the focus here is on the core group of instrumentalists – as they soar to the skies on these long tracks that are filled with massively freewheeling solos! Herbie Hancock plays Fender Rhodes, Freddie Hubbard is on trumpet, Eric Gale on guitar, and Stanley Turrentine on tenor – sounding harder here than on some of his other albums for the label – and rhythm is by Ron Carter on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums, two players who are more than loose enough to keep things grooving but also give the soloists some space. Titles include two long takes on Herbie's freaky funky classic "Hornets", done in a hard-wailing style – and side two contains Freddie's "Gibraltar", more of a straight jazz track – but still done here with some excellent electric piano, and a tight soulful groove! Brunswick, 1982. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A great little groover on Brunswick – with that kind of choppy club funk feel that you'll also find on some of the label's other obscure 12" singles, like the classic "You Are The One", by AMFM. The track's got a very nice groove – and the hook's enough to keep the track grooving nicely throughout! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Verve, 1956. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful small group playing by Lester Young – recorded with 2 different groups: one that includes John Lewis, Gene Ramey, and Jo Jones; the other including Gildo Mahones, Jessie Drakes, Gene Ramey, and Connie Kay. The mellow aspects of the players come out nicely against Young's soulful playing – and the piano of Mahones is an especially welcome aspect of the session. Titles include "New DB Blues", "I Can't Believe You're In Love With Me", "Down N Adam", "This Can't Be Love", and "Tenderly". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Herbie MannMuscle Shoals Nitty Gritty ... LP
Embryo, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Herbie Man gets nitty and gritty at the Muscle Shoals Studios – bringing his funky flute to the southern powerhouse of sound, and hitting some of his most soulful grooves of the time! The approach here is really great – definitely cast in the southern soul mode that was associated with Muscle Shoals, but also done with the looseness of a jazz record – so that the sound's a fair bit different than similar projects coming out of the scene at the time. Most tracks are long and flowing – with lots of sweet electric elements that include vibes from Roy Ayers, guitar from Eddie Hinton, and keyboards from Barry Beckett. Wayne Jackson and Andrew Love slide in on horns – but Herbie's flute is still the main solo element, and it gets plenty of space to stretch out with some great trippy grooves! Titles include Edwin Birdsong's "Can You Dig It?", plus Sonny Sharrock's "Blind Willy", and Herbie's own "Panama Red's Panama Hat" and "Claudia Pie". LP, Vinyl record album

Salvation, 1975. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A nice session by one of the most unique guitarists in jazz – all done up in a CTI style, with production and arrangements by Bob James that give the record a nice little electric finish! We always loved Gabor's guitar on his 60s recordings, and this set is one of the first to really strongly push him into the sound of the 70s – working with James, Eric Gale, and Jon Faddis to craft some soulful grooves that show that Szabo's style would keep on evolving! Includes the nice groover "Ziggidy Zag", a mellow electric jazzy with a back/forth stepping groove – plus the cuts "Macho", "Poetry Man", "Time", and "Transylvanian Boogie". LP, Vinyl record album

Jane BirkinJane Birkin – Integral Live (15CD set) ... CD
Universal (France), Late 80s/1990s/2000s/2010s. New Copy 15CDs ... $58.99 69.99
A great document of the way that Jane Birkin really flourished in the second half of her musical career, especially in the years after the passing of Serge Gainsbourg – a time when Birkin was emerging to be one of the real giants of French music on her own, as testified to in the power of this series of live performances! The Jane Birkin here is very different than the breathy voice next to Serge on her early recordings – and instead, she commands the stage with the presence of singers like Maria Bethania or Gal Costa – maybe no surprise, as the very generous presentation of these performances will attest. The box brings together live sets from 1987 up to 2023 – albums that include Au Bataclan, Au Casino De Paris, A L'Olympia, En Concert Au Japon, Arabesque, Au Palace, Sings Serge Gainsbourg Via Japan, Le Symphonique Live, and Oh Pardon Tu Dormais. Fania/Craft, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 28.99
Supposedly the end of Willie Colon's early "crime" career – as the title and cover imply that he's finally been brought to trial! Don't worry about Willie being beaten down, though, because the music on the album is every bit as fierce and powerful as ever – and features a number of long tracks that really stretch out in a highly percussive groove! The group's great – with Jose Mangual on bongos, Joe Torres on piano, and Milton Cardona on conga – as well as Hector Lavoe still in the lead on vocals. Titles include "Aguanile", "Pan y Agua", "Seguire Sin Ti", "Timbalero", "Pirana", "Ah Ah O No", "Si La Ves", and "Sonando Despierto". LP, Vinyl record album

ABC, 1967. Very Good+ ... $8.99
A very groovy mid 60s set from Chris Connor – quite different than her famous 50s sides for Bethlehem, thanks to some hip arrangements by Don Costa! Don never goes to over the top here, but he does add in some nice groovy touches – things like bossa rhythms and electric harpsichord, used sparingly, but to very nice effect – and all in ways that help Connor hit some new ground for the times! Vocals are still totally top-shelf – as you'd expect from Chris – and tracks include "Love Life", "You're Gonna Hear From Me", "Who's Afraid", "Nowhere Man", and "Goin Out Of My Head". Miles DavisMiles Davis At Carnegie Hall – The Legendary Performance Of May 19, 1961 ... CD
Columbia, 1961. Used ... $2.99
Sparkling live work from Miles Davis – and a set that captures both sides of his talents on Columbia at the time! Half the material features a smoking quintet – with Hank Mobley on tenor, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – and the other half of the date features a larger orchestra led by Gil Evans – in the modern mode that make the Miles/Evans collaborations sound so great on some of the pair's studio records! Together, the material offers up a beautiful live portrait of Davis' early 60s genius – allowed a bit more space to roam in the live setting, on titles that include "So What", "New Rhumba", "Lament", and "No Blues" – all taken at a bit of a faster clip than in the studio, as Miles was wont to do in a live performance! Miles DavisMiles In The Sky (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/Legacy, 1968. Used ... $2.99
Miles Davis makes the electric transition – in this groundbreaking set from the late 60s! The classic mid 60s quintet is still in place here – Wayne Shorter on tenor, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums – but the sound is looser, freer, and more spacious – often echoing some of the rhythmic concerns that would dominate Miles' music in a few more years, but without as much of a bombastic sound. Williams' drums are amazing – fierce one minute, then fading the next – and Herbie Hancock's use of both electric and acoustic piano really points at his own directions in coming years. George Benson plays one one track – "Paraphernalia" – introducing electric guitar to the Miles Davis sound – and other long tracks on the set include "Stuff", "Black Comedy", and "Country Son". CD features 2 bonus alternate takes of "Black Comedy" and "Country Son". CD

D12's sophmore full length is a pretty fair improvement over the largely forgettable debut – particularly the single "My Band", one of the rare cuts in which Eminem seems to have a pretty good time lampooning is own image. ✨✧ Duke EllingtonPiano In The Foreground (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/Legacy, 1961. Used ... $4.99
One of the Duke's greatest jazz recordings – and an album that features some incredible solo work on piano – at a level with other modernist small group sessions in the Ellington catalog, like Money Jungle or Live at the Whitney! As the title says, Duke's piano is very much in the foreground – working in spare trio format that includes Aaron Bell on bass and Sam Woodyard on drums, both plucked from the larger orchestra, and given some great space to work on the set! Duke's the real star, though, and he sparkles tremendously on tunes that include "Summertime", "A Hundred Dreams Ago", "So", "Springtime In Africa", "Blues For Jerry", and "Fontainebleau Forest". CD also features the bonus tracks "Lotus Blossom", "All The Things You Are" (in 2 versions), and 4 different "Piano Improvisations"! CD

Etta JamesQueen Of Soul (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Argo/Kent (UK), Early 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Queen of Soul is right! Heck, on these early albums, Etta practically invented soul – or at least invented a deep soul style of singing that would be taken up by countless other female singers during the 60s, but rarely matched with this kind of brilliance. Straight up beautiful stuff! The arrangements are uncredited, but we think they're probably by Riley Hampton – who did so much of Etta's other wonderful work in the early 60s. The recordings for sure took place at points between '62 and '64, mostly in Chicago, with couple in New York and one in Nashville. One other thing that is crystal clear about the sessions is that she had access to the very best musicians and the best sound possible – all you need is a listen to know that! The album's an all-solid, all-soul record with loads of obscure tunes and not a bit of filler! Titles include "Flight 101", "Bobby Is His Name", "Breaking Point", "Mello Fellow", "Do Right", and "Somewhere Out There". This first ever proper CD release is loaded with excellent bonus material – recordings from the same early-to-mid 60s period – 13 of them "You Got Me Where You Want Me", "Only Time Will Tell", "Pushover". "You Can't Talk To A Fool", "Would It Make Any Difference To You", "Pay Back", "Tomorrow Night", "I Can't Hold It Any More" and more. 23 tracks in all! CD

Never-issued material from the legendary South African pianist Tete Mbambisa – all recorded in the mid 70s, right around the time of Tete's classic albums! The double-length set is a treasure trove of soulful SA jazz expression – and tunes move between slightly funky numbers to others that have a more straight ahead vibe – almost always with some great electric bass at the core, sometimes moving gently, sometimes groovily – and topped by strong horn work that echoes some of the best jazz currents coming into the scene at the time – snakey and soulful in all the best ways. ✨✧ Monday MichiruDon't Disturb This Groove (2024 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Grand Gallery (Japan), 2011. New Copy ... $46.99 58.99
A great one from Monday Michiru – sweet, soulful, and totally right on the money! The set's almost a return to the warm soul territory that first won us over in Monday's work from the 90s – as she takes on a whole host of older American soul tunes by Stevie Wonder, Teena Marie, and others – sung with a wonderfully mature vocal approach, and set to jazzy backings that really help change things up – and make the record way more than just a simple set of cover versions! There's a great blend here – the instrumental depth that Monday's shown in recent recordings, and the straightforward soul of the early years – all handled with just the right production balance to make it come off perfectly. Titles include "Best Of My Love", "Um Amigo", "I Can't Help It", "Ooh La La La", "Don't Disturb This Groove", "You Are The Universe", and "As". LP, Vinyl record album

Mighty SparrowOutcast ... LP
National/Think (Japan), 1963. New Copy (reissue)... $36.99 46.99
A calypso set, but not the sort that you'd know from big crossover records of the late 50s – as the Mighty Sparrow works here with that jazzy blend of horns and rootsy rhythms that kept a strong edge in his music, and made his sounds as important on the pre-reggae scene in London as they were at home in Trinidad! There's a nicely rattling vibe to the record that really matches the sharpness of the vocals – an important current of politics, social commentary, and personal brag – all of which had a huge impact on later sounds and styles of music. The saxophone lines really keep things soulful – and titles include "The Village Ram", "Martin Luther King", "I'll Be Around", "You Don't Love Me", "Castro Eating Banana", and "Tour Of Jamaica". The new sound of Naples from this hip Italian duo – served up here in a blend of mighty nice clubby modes! There's definitely an 80s inspiration to the music – lots of lean keyboards and basslines, and plenty of boogie grooves – but the use of Italian vocals and occasional larger instrumentation also opens up other currents too – particularly some of those 80s EU club tracks where influences were flowing into the scene from West Africa and other points south. The keyboards alone are worth the price of admission, with lots of moogy moments – and titles include "Stann Fore", "Ddoje Facce", "Disco Sole", "Je Vulesse", "A Voce E Napule", and "Parev Ajere". The "trip" here is a mellow one – not the soaring, spacey style you might expect in a long line of drug-reference titles for Art Pepper albums – but that difference is a-ok with us, because Art's really hitting some great new territory here, thanks to a hip trio that includes George Cables on piano! Tracks are long and stretched out – but in a way that's gently exploratory, and focused on a really warm sense of tone – in a mode that we might liken slightly to Stan Getz at his best moments from the same period, particularly the groove he developed in his post-Sweet Rain years. Other members of the quartet include David Williams on bass and Elvin Jones on drums – and tracks include "The Trip", "Sweet Love Of Mine", "Song For Richard", "Red Car", and "The Summer Knows". Archie SheppFire Music ... CD
Impulse/MCA, 1965. Used ... $6.99
Fantastic stuff – easily one of Archie Shepp's greatest albums, and certainly one of the pivotal points of 60s avant garde jazz! The album features Shepp leading a crack "new thing" line up that includes Ted Curson on trumpet, Marion Brown on alto, Joe Chambers on drums, Reggie Johnson on bass, and the lesser-known Joseph Orange on trombone – all playing in a beautifully poised manner, never too far out and free, but with all the dynamic energy of the best jazz changes of the 60s! There's a vibe here that's similar to some of the Blue Note "new thing" work by players like Grachan Moncur, Jackie McLean, and Tony Williams from the time – but there's a vision that's also wider and deeper, too, given the size of the group and the way they interact. Titles include "Hambone", "Los Olvidados", "Malcolm Malcolm–Semper Malcolm", and an insane cover of "Girl From Ipanema". You can't go wrong with this one – trust us! CD also features a bonus live version of "Hambone"! CD

Yet there's also some good contributions by other members, too – especially singers Anna Thiam and Desmond Foster, who balance out the instrumental funk with some great vocal moments – especially Thiam, who's got a warmth and depth that's a nice change from some of the too-easy retro soul vocals we usually hear on records like this. Bruno SpoerriDer Wurger Vom Towe ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1966. New Copy ... $10.99 32.99
One of the most striking records we've ever heard from Swiss music legend Bruno Spoerri – a set that's very different from both his straight jazz recordings and his more experimental work – and instead a soundtrack for an obscure 60s film about a strangler in London! There's definitely a lot of mod elements in the music on the groovy cuts, which are then turned towards more sinister purposes on the spookier ones – so that an organ line can move from swinging to spare and moody, and a bassline can follow in just the same way! There's great use of Spoerri's famous sonic palette here – built up in ways that are almost a precursor to the more striking sonic modes of the Italian scene in the early 70s – and the set fatures 20 tracks in all, including "Plane To Peru", "Brogues In Robes", "Reading The Killer", "Spiral Staircase", "Check Out The Gravel Pit", "To The Brothers Of Compensatory Righteousness", "Don't Blame Jane", and "Kiddie's Beat". Vandermark 5Target Or Flag ... CD
Atavistic, 1998. Used ... $8.99
A perfect example of the poise and energy that the Vandermark 5 have brought to the Chicago jazz scene of the late 90s – and a very strong second release by the group for Atavistic. The overall style varies strongly from cut to cut, showing Vandermark's ability to navigate a host of musical communities – which he often does during the course of a single week of work in Chicago! Titles include "The Start Of Something", "Sucker Punch", "Super Opaque", "Last Call", and "Attempted, Not Known". CD

Village Of The SunFirst Light ... LP
Gearbox (UK), 2023. New Copy ... $27.99 29.99
An unusual project from the team of tenorist Binker Golding and drummer Moses Boyd – and one that really represents the compelling directions they've taken in recent years! The group here is a trio, with key contributions from Simon Ratcliffe of Basement Jaxx – who provides all these extra sonic touches and additional live instrumentation to create a rich tapestry of different elements, which are still grounded strongly by the acoustic performances of Binker and Moses! Golding is especially great in the setting – almost set free a bit more than usual, which creates some wonderfully soulful passages on his tenor – on titles that include "First Light", "The Spanish Master", "Tigris", "Ted", and "Cesca". Enrique VillegasTributo A Jerome Kern ... CD
Trova/RGS (Argentina), 1977. New Copy ... $13.99 16.99
The music of Jerome Kern is explored here in territory that's nicely far from the original – really open, fluid trio instrumentals from Enrique Villegas – who's very much at the height of his more modern, open style here! The tunes are familiar, but really pulled apart as well – as Villegas makes them his own through inventive arrangements and a very freewheeling approach to the piano – much less structured than his earlier work, and given equally open support from Oscar Alem on bass and Osvaldo Lopez on drums! Titles include the side-long "Temas De La Comedia Musical Showboat" – plus "Dearly Beloved", "The Way You Look Tonight", "A Fine Romance", and "Long Ago & Far Away". CD

Teal/Sharp Flat (Netherlands), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $30.99 34.99
An unusual later album from Witch – one that has a sweet funky style at the core – a mode that shows the group picking up a fair bit of disco and club from the American scene, and fusing it with their older Zamrock styles to create a really unique sound overall! At times, the record echoes some of the Euro disco records of the late 70s – but there's also a deeper current to the record too, especially on some of the more personal tunes. Keyboards take over more than guitar at times – and although the group's name originally meant "We Intend To Create Havoc", this record might have changed the meaning to "We Intend To Create Happiness". Titles include "To Be Felt", "Movin On", "I'm Coming Back", "Let's Get Together", "It Feels So Good", and "My Desire". LP, Vinyl record album

180g (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $41.99 44.99
A wonderfully wide-ranging look at the more unique aspects of Japanese jazz from the 60s onward – a set that mixes together spiritual tracks, bossa nova, and some surprisingly soulful tracks too – all from records that were only ever issued in Japan! If you've heard the great first volume, you'll know what to expect here – but we can also say that the scope of work here might even be better, and there's some great surprises along the way – especially on cuts that show the way these Japanese jazz musicians have taken some inspiration from American music, then really run far in their own new directions with the work. Titles include "Yamame" by Akira Miyazawa, "Loving You" by George Otsuka, "Down To The Sea" by Yoshio Ikeda, "Clair Deluge" by Toshiyaki Yokota & The Beat Generation, "Saynoara Blues" by Hideo Shiraki, "Blossom In The Water" by Masao Yagi, "Day Of The Sun" by Masahiko Togashi & Isao Suzuki, "Summer Wind" by Yasuko Nagamine & Yasuaki Shimizo, "Desireless" by Masahiko Togashi, "Lady Boogie" by Takeru Muaroka & His New Grup, "Constant Rain" by Tadao Sawai & Toshiyuki Miyama, and "Ma Mere L'Oye" by Jun Date & Masayki Takayanagi. Digitmovies (Italy), 1979. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
That's a sexy-looking lady on the cover – sliding on her cutoffs after a rendezvous in the dark – and the sound of the album definitely fits the image, at least at the start! Stelvio Cipriani begins the music like the story – a bit light and romantic at first, then sliding into tension as the album goes on – marking a point in the narrative where sex turns to suspense, which Stelvio follows by picking up the action on some of the tunes, and dropping into darker moments at others! Edda Dell'Orso delivers a fair bit of wordless vocals on the album, next to keyboard lines from Cipriani – and the whole thing almost feels like a late 70s update of the modes she might have crafted with Ennio Morricone a decade before. CD features 17 tracks in all – and wonderful sound! CD

Columbia (Japan), 1974. Used 2CD Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Miles Davis' last studio session before a few years of seclusion – and a really monumental effort, probably the baddest of the electric period! The album does a great job of capturing the energy of the frenzied live sets from that time, and matching it with Teo Macero's cut and paste editing, and wizardry at the mixing console. The side long piece "He Loved Him Madly" is a minimalist epic, while "Calypso Frelimo" alternates between mad afro-percussion driven jams and spacey wah-wah trumpet interludes. The rest of the album is divided up into more succinct shorter funky pieces, like classic "Rated X", with Miles basically just leaning on an electric organ over a hyper funk beat, and the bluesy "Honky Tonk" which opens with an incredibly funky burping electric piano break! Dave Grusin made a few sleepy albums in his day, but this isn't one of them – and instead, it's a sweet funky fusion outing that really sums up some of the best Dave Grusin modes of the 70s! This excellent LP from 1977 really captures the best of the Grusin soundtrack style – heard in the 70s on shows like Barretta, or in films like Three Days of the Condor – mellow fusion with a tightly arranged style – lots of nicely isolated instrumentation, and the kind of spare and spacey grooves that you'd expect from a hip CTI session! Musicians include Grover Washington on saxes, Dave Valentin on flute, Ron Carter on bass, and Steve Gadd himself – plus Grusin on a lot of sweet keyboards – and titles include great cut "Modaji", plus "Heart Is A Lonely Hunter", "Catavento", and "Montage". ✨✧ Fuzzy HaskinsI Got My Thang Together – The Westbound Years ... CD
Westbound (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic solo work from Fuzzy Haskins – a key early member of the George Clinton P-Funk empire – breaking out here on his own with a fresh new take on the Parliafunkadelicment groove! The work here is pulled from two albums and other recordings (some unissued) that Fuzzy did for the Westbound label – home to his initial work with Funkadelic, and a very respectful spot to launch his solo career – which takes of in similar late 70s funk territory to some of his former associates, especially Bootsy Collins – but with a vibe that's definitely his own! Some of these tracks were ones that Fuzzy had written years ago, but held back from Funkadelic sessions – and they're performed here with help from familiar Detroit funk giants – including Bootsy on bass, Bernie Worrell on keyboards, and Donald Austin on guitar. Titles include "Gettin It Off", "Thangs We Used To Do", "Not Yet (12" version)", "This Situation Called Love", "Silent Day", "Gimme Back", "Cookie Jar (alt version)", "Mr Junk Man", "I Think I Got My Thang Together (12" version)", "Right Back Where I Started From", "The Fuz & Da Boog", "Sinderilla", "I Can See Myself In You", and "Silent Day". Rare funk from the same Minneapolis scene that gave the world Prince – a legendary indie set from the end of the 70s, put together by Lewis brothers Pierre and Andre! Despite their French names, the duo have a mighty American groove on the set – a wicked approach to funk that's very much in the best ensemble mode of the period – but leaner too, given the smaller lineup, and relatively sparse production – which makes most of the record bristle like some rare boogie 45! Vocals are by the brothers, plus female singer Barbara Bolar, and later Prince-mate Sonny Thompson – and Prince himself even adds in some slight magic to one cut on the set. Titles include "Dynamic Duo", "Got To Be Something", "Get Up", "Higher", "Feel Good To Ya", and "Mr G". A sweet soulful set from Herbie Mann – one that has the jazz flautist taking on the 60s sound of Memphis! This album was such a big hit for Herbie that it's easy to forget the sheer raw power of the group – a mighty quartet that included Roy Ayers on vibes, and both Sonny Sharrock and Larry Coryell on guitars – jamming with a hard but ragged edge, and getting some tighter backing here by a hip Memphis soul rhythm section! The groove is great, with a heavier, funkier approach than Herbie was using on previous albums – and the tunes are all nice and long, with plenty of room for really great instrumental interplay! Titles include "Hold On, I'm Comin", "Chain Of Fools", and "Memphis Underground". CD

Great grooves from Piero Umiliani – a sweet 70s session of sound library material, served up in a warm blend of funky rhythms and mighty nice keyboards! Hammond is in the lead on most numbers – echoing those cool odd phrasing styles that Umiliani used in the late 60s, but given more of a straightforward groove thanks to the backings – which move between cop show funk and some slightly clubbier styles at point. The whole thing's got all the wit and whimsy we've come to love from Piero – and which you might expect from the cover image too – and titles include "Slogan", "Trip", "Bon Voyage", "Union Pacific", "Business Is Business", and "Wild Cat". Classic blues harp and raw vocals from Sonny Boy Williamson – material recorded for Chess during the early 60s, and issued after his death, with a title that's certainly designed to catch the attention of the college kids looking for the "real" thing! The work here is really great – and often gets past cliches you might imagine of Chicago blues – thanks to a meanly gritty style from Sonny, but also some nice sue of organ and guitar to help vamp up the tunes a bit! Chugging rhythms drive along the best numbers nicely – and titles include "The Goat", "Decoration Day", "The Hunt", "Nine Below Zero", "Stop Right Now", and "Close To Me". CD

A sweet bouncy groover – one of the rare albums of modern soul cut by the group Delegation! The group in this incarnation are a trio – Ray Patterson, Ricky Bailey, and Bruce Dunbar on vocals – stripped-down harmonically, a perfect fit for the album's groove-heavy arrangements. The album's got the same warm finish, with a touch of jazz, that you might find in some of the Arista modern soul albums from the same era – infused with a bit more of a club approach on a few of the more uptempo cuts. Luaka Bop, 2021. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic record, and one of those cases where the presence of the mighty Pharoah Sanders can really transform the sound of a session! We'll admit that we weren't sure what to expect – but at the core, the record is really a set of duets between Pharoah on tenor and Sam Shepherd on keyboards – a great range that includes Fender Rhodes, Hammond B3, celeste, and acoustic piano – slowly graced by some larger arrangements from the LSO! Yet even with the majesty of the larger group, who come into the proceedings in baby steps, there's a core feeling of intimacy that never goes away – sublimely spiritual sounds from Pharoah on tenor throughout – with phrasing and styles that show us that he hasn't lost an ounce of his talent since his early years on Impulse records. The album's maybe one of the most beautiful things that Sanders has given us in a long time – and that's saying a lot, as he's always pretty great – and the set features the long "Promises" suite, in nine movements – a piece for saxophone, strings, keyboards, and electronics composed by Shepherd. Southern Routes, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Tremendous early work from George Jones – the full White Lightning album for Mercury Records, stacked here with a huge amount of bonus tracks too! George is wonderful throughout – already a standout in the shifting country scene of the 50s – with one ear that understands the sharper edges of the rock generation, but another that brings out all the sentiment in the tunes he touches – material that's delivered with this magical approach that few other singers could touch. If you only know George as a blue-tinged singer of ballads from his later years, you'll really be stunned here – as lots of the tracks have a sound that's quite different, and a lot more vibrant. Titles include "White Lighning", "Give Away Girl", "Wandering Soul", "Life To Go", "Flame In My Heart", "What Am I Worth", "I Take The Chance", "Settle Down", "I'm A One Woman Man", "Revenooer Man", "Sparkling Brown Eyes", and "Color Of The Blues". ✨✧ Bill LooseVixen ... CD
Delta, Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous soundtrack – nearly perfect in every way, and put together with a heck of a lot more care than the Russ Meyer film it was recorded to accompany! We honestly have never heard another Bill Loose score before, but with this one we'd rank him right up there with our favorites of the time – on both sides of the Atlantic! The main theme has some great electric harpsichord over sweeping strings and a brooding rhythm – and the harpsichord comes back on other tracks of the album – joining some really skittish drums, oddly-tuned guitar, and rolling basslines that give some of the best tracks an almost funky sort of feel. There's also a great sax player who brings in some wonderfully soulful undercurrents on some tracks – making for a really odd mix of modes, but which really sounds great. Titles include "Vixen Gets Excited", "Niles Threatens Vixen", "Janet's Theme", "Obanion's Theme", "Conversation Piece", and "Canadian Romp". CD

We love the work of saxophonist Willie Morris – one of the freshest talents to hit the Posi-Tone label in recent years, and an artist who really seems to take off with this album! Willie blows tenor throughout, and the set's got this unexpected depth, especially on his original compositions – while also sharing some of the solid swing that we love from the label's other releases – thanks to rhythm work from Jon Davis on piano, Boris Kozlov on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums and percussion. There's a mix of fresh ideas, solid soul, and modern currents that almost echoes some of the late 60s work of Jackie McLean – maybe underscored by the excellent alto work of Patrick Cornelius, whose horn is a perfect counterpart for Morris' tenor. A tremendous record from one of the hippest soul singers ever – and an album that has Gil Scott-Heron really pushing forward after his initial classics for the Flying Dutchman label! There's less spoken material here and more sung passages – as Gil's really discovering his confidence as a singer, moving effortlessly between jazz and soul – and getting superb accompaniment from Brian Jackson, who plays both acoustic and electric piano next to Gil's electric. Backings are spare – just bass and drums – and it's no surprise that the album was released on the legendary Strata East label, as it rivals the rest on that imprint for righteous spiritual power! Titles include Gil's classic "The Bottle" – which went on to become a huge hit in many versions – plus the beautiful "Your Daddy Loves You", heard here in the original version – and the tunes "Peace Go With You Brother", "Back Home", "Rivers Of My Fathers", and "A Very Precious Time". The Detroit soul scene at the start of the 60s – music from a time before Motown was dominating the city's reputation, and a whole host of other great labels brought the motor city sound to the masses! The work here is quite a surprise if you're only thinking in terms of Northern Soul and some of the more uptempo Detroit groovers – as the work here burns on so many different levels – often with a style that reflects some of the nascent soul coming out of Chicago on labels like Chess and Vee Jay, the latter of whom is featured here amidst a range of other imprints that include Wand, Atlantic, Scepter, Time, Old Town, and Brent – all of whom released some of these early Detroit soul tracks as singles back in the day. In true Ace/Kent fashion, the set also features a few unreleased gems, plus a wonderful set of notes on the city's soul scene – alongside tracks that include "Nosey Folk" by The Del-Phis, "Answer Me" by Vivian Collins, "Can't We Get Together" by Harry Reid, "Here I Am" by Betty Lavette, "Shakin Fit" by The Pyramids, "That's No Way To Spend My Time" by The Pen Ettes, "Wedding Bells" by Melvin Davis, "You Lied" by Marva Josie, "Think A Little Sugar" by Barbara Lewis, "Just One More Time" by JJ Barnes, "My Letter" by Priscilla Page, "I Know How It Feels" by Laura Johnson, "I'm A Lonely Guy" by Timmy Shaw & The Sternphones, "Come Back To Me" by La Wanda William, "I Cried For My Last Time" by The Sonnettes, and "Tears Running & Falling From My Eyes" by James Lately. The record is in a tinny 80s dance mode – still with the jungle/tropical themes of earlier records, but also with a kind of Miami Vice-ish style on the guitars and keyboards. We suppose it represents sort of a sophistication for the ensemble – but we'd make this the last one to buy of all their records. Titles include "Sex Surprise Big Surprise", "Lovers In The Rain", "Stop The Horse", "Inside Of Me", and "Hollywood Ten O'Clock At Night" – and those titles should say it all! CD

✨✧ Joe BonnerLifesaver ... LP
Muse, 1975. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Wonderfully moody piano work from Joe Bonner – working here in spare solo space on one of his most evocative albums of the 70s! The album's filled with swirling piano lines, played in the usual sensitive Bonner style – stark single-note melodies standing out, couched by fuller chords that are dripping with color. The piano's acoustic throughout, but as with Kenny Barron at this time, there's a slight hint of electricity in the phrasing – and titles include "Tattoo", "Little Chocolate Boy", "Native Son", "The Lifesaver", and "The Observer". King, 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A strange but great single from James Brown! The cut has a slow vamping "honky tonk" kind of groove – and James raps over the top about America, how great it is, and how much opportunity the country offers. The whole thing's got a very positive message – and the monologue is one of James' more compelling ones! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ James BrownFunky Christmas ... CD
King/Universal, Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Excellent funky Christmas – essential for any soulful holiday celebration! Not everyone knows it, but James Brown cut a fair number of Christmas albums during the 60s – thre albums, and a bunch of singles to be exact! They're all super-rare, but this great collection brings together some of the best material from those years – and nearly all the tracks are originals, with a quality level that's just as great as James' non-Christmas recordings! No kidding, The Godfather put his heart and soul into these recordings – and the stuff on here's great if you dig his King albums and singles from the late 60s, you'll find plenty to love here too. Titles include "Let's Unite The Whole World At Christmas", "Santa Claus Is Definitely Here To Stay", "Hey America", "Soulful Christmas", "Let's Make Christmas Mean Something This Year (parts 1 & 2)", "Go Power At Christmas Time", and the perennial favorite "Santa Claus Goes Straight To The Ghetto". 17 cuts in all – and a really great collection.
