David BlueThese 23 Days In September/Stories/Nice Baby & The Angel/Cupid's Arrow ... CD
Morello (UK), 1968/1971/1973/1976. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99 19.99
Four lost albums from David Blue – a really compelling singer/songwriter, ripe for rediscovery! First up is These 23 Days In September, recorded for Reprise – a really moody little record from David Blue – a folksy singer who's got a style that definitely lives up to the melancholy promise of his name! Blue's definitely an artist with a difference – working in the familiar mode of vocals and acoustic guitar, but with an edge and distinctness that really sets him apart from the folkies of a few year before – that sense of different that really set apart a new wave of contemporaries, like Leonard Cohen, Fred Neill, or Tom Rapp. Titles include "These 23 Days In September", "The Sailor's Lament", "Scales For A Window Thief", "You Will Come Back Again", "Slow & Easy", and "The Grand Hotel". Stories is an overlooked early set on Asylum – the kind of really special singer/songwriter material that really set the label apart at the start of the 70s! David Blue has this compelling vocal style that's moody, but down to earth – inflected here and there with guitar contributions from Ry Cooder, who's understated, but really brings out some special qualities in the tunes. Jack Nitzsche adds in some light strings at points – but overall, things are pretty spare and personal – and titles include "Looking For A Friend", "Another One Like Me", "Sister Rose", "The Blues", "Come On John", "Marianne", and "Fire In The Morning". Nice Baby & The Angel shows David Blue really starting to get some star power in his mix – a fuller set, produced by Graham Nash – with work from Nash on guitar, plus more guitar from Dave Mason and David Lindley – in a nice mix of roots elements, but which never overwhelm that unique sense of songwriting and vocals that set David Blue apart from the rest. Titles include "Darlin Jenny", "Troubadour Song", "Train To Anaheim", "True To You", "On Sunday Any Sunday", and "Outlaw Man". On the cover of Cupid's Arrow, David Blue might look a bit cheesy, what with his open shirt and all – but he's definitely the real deal, and very down to earth in his singer/songwriter approach – with a quality that's only underscored by the lineup on the set – a group that features Levon Helm on drums, Jesse Ed Davis on guitar, David Lindley on mandolin and slide, and Barry Goldberg on piano and organ, and also handling production of the album too. The shift from David's roots is a bit like that taken by other contemporaries who once started in more folksy territory, then found a new way to grow in the west coast singer/songwriter scene – and that means that things are more electrified, but still quite far from mainstream music – with original tunes from Blue throughout, and titles that include "I Feel Bad", "Maria Maria", "Primeval Tune", She's Got You", "Tom's Song", and "Run Run Run". A&M, 1976/1977. Very Good (pic cover)... $9.99
Completely sublime! Shuggie Otis first wrote and recorded "Strawberry Letter 23", but it took The Brothers Johnson, and some smooth Quincy Jones production to make it a hit! The track loses none of it's original trippy soul in this version – and if anything, the better vocals really take it over the top! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Edition X/Superior Viaduct, 1969. New Copy ... $16.99
Some of the most haunting music we've ever heard from spiritual minimalist La Monte Young – a set that was issued on his own small label at the end of the 60s, as a series of duets with his wife, Marian Zazeela – who's a heck of a creative force on the album! The set's got plenty of the longspun passages we love in Young's music – but with much more of a focus on trance-like vocals, handled by both Young and Zazeela, as they deliver these sonorous chant-like passages that build slowly alongside electronics – going in and out of phase like some of the best minimal experiments of the time, but with a much earther, personal sort of approach. Jose Feliciano10 To 23 ... LP
RCA, 1969. Very Good ... $2.99
A groovy record from Jose – with his best kind of crossover feel! It's an unusual title – one that refers to the first track on the record, recorded by Jose Feliciano at age 10 – and the rest of the material included, done when Jose was 23 years old. It's a mixture of American soul, Latin roots, and Jose's own unique touches – that Feliciano blend of well-played acoustic guitar and super-sensitive vocals – all produced with a slightly airy feel that only adds to the mood of the tracks. Titles include "First Of May", "Windmills Of Your Mind", "Little Red Rooster", "Miss Otis Regrets", "She's A Woman", and "I've Gotta Get A Message To You". LP, Vinyl record album

A rare look at a very obscure sound library from the European scene – the Belgian Selection label, home to some very groovy sounds from the late 70s! The music here resonates with Belgian soundtrack and jazz work of the period – and shares some musicians from those genres too – and the titles within mix funky jazz with larger arrangements – all instrumental, and handled in a strong array of styles – some upbeat, some midtempo, and some cool and laidback! Titles include "Black World" by Stern Selection, "Space Shuttle Jazz" by Jacques Siroul, "Crystal Waltz" by Rene Costy, "Chief Of Freen Bean" by Bob Porter, "No Thoroughfare" by Jordan Stevy, and "Osmoses" by Leonard D Messina. Nessa, 1977. Near Mint- ... $49.99
One of the best albums ever by this legendary Chicago trio – a great example of the way that records on the Nessa label can really get to the heart of artists' intentions! The trio of Henry Threadgill on reeds, Fred Hopkins on bass, and Steve McCall on percussion have never sounded better – and have this intimate, soulful interplay that's sometimes missing from other efforts – that special kind of energy that makes the AACM so great when it's really clicking this well – as deeply spiritual as it is freely expressive! Threadgill plays alto, tenor, bass flute, and the compelling hubkaphone – and titles include "I'll Be Right Here Waiting", "No 2", "GvE", "Subtraction", and "Keep Right On Playing Thru The Mirror Over The Water". A nice bit of funky blues, and a very strange record to appear on Motown! The production style and presentation are very rootsy – right down to the photo of Luther on the front cover, who's smoking a cigarette, but trying to pretend it's a joint! The style is electric blues of the Chicago school, but given a bit more of a country funk kind of sound. Titles include "Bad News Is Coming", "Dust My Broom", "Evil Is Going On", "Rock Me Baby", and "Raggedy & Dirty", which actually has some very nice drums! LP, Vinyl record album

Al Cohn & Zoot SimsYou N Me ... LP
Mercury, 1960. Near Mint- ... $14.99
One of the best albums that Al Cohn and Zoot Sims ever cut together – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of their collaborations during the 50s and 60s! The set's got a nice small group feeling, and is a bit more open and relaxed than some of their RCA material – still in the sharp, thoughtful mode that marked both Cohn and Sims' sessions – but also a bit more earthy, too – possibly because they've got Mose Allison in the combo on piano. The album includes the incredible spare sax-only track "Improvisation For Unaccompanied Saxophones", which is an extremely haunting track that sounds unlike anything the pair had ever done together – and other titles have the full quintet playing, tunes that include "The Opener", "The Note" and "You N Me". Vince GuaraldiOh Good Grief! ... LP
Warner, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $24.99 29.99
One of the coolest, grooviest albums that pianist Vince Guaraldi ever recorded – a set that's got the same Peanuts theme as his earlier dates for Fantasy Records, but which also features some sweet electric touches that only make things even better than before! In addition to his warmly vamping piano, with all those lyrical touches we love so much, Vince is playing an electric harpsichord too – which makes for some very groovy moments – in a cool quartet that features guitar from Eddie Duran, bass from Stanley Gilbert, and drums from the great Carl Burnett! All tunes are Peanut-themed – the music that Guaraldi wrote for the TV specials – but they're sometimes taken at a looser style that's even jazzier overall – as you'll hear on the classic "Linus & Lucy", plus "Red Baron", "Peppermint Patty", "Great Pumpkin Waltz", and "Rain Rain Go Away". There's a great bunch of tracks here besides the hit "Moon River" – like "Sally's Tomato", "Mr Yunioshi", "Latin Golightly", and "The Big Heist" – and Eddie and crew do an excellent job with the music, opening it up more than Mancini's recording, but still retaining all of its humor and warmth! GTA (Brazil), 1977. Very Good- ... Just Sold Out!
One of two incredible albums from the lovely Ana Mazzotti – a 70s Brazilian singer who could effortlessly blend fusion and soul, Brazilian rhythms and funk – working here with plenty of help from Jose Roberto Bertrami of Azymuth! In fact, the record has a vibe that's a lot like the best early Azymuth music, although with vocals – hip rhythms, unusual inflections, and a great electrified version of older Brazilian styles – all topped by the warm, wonderful vocals of Mazzotti! The whole thing's wonderful – and titles include an amazing version of "Sou", a vocal take on the Azymuth tune "Agora Ou Nunca Mais", and the cuts "Em Acalanto", "Eta Samba Bom", "Bairro Negro", and the funky classic "Roda Mundo". They're not kidding with the title of this one – because although the record was only Wes Montgomery's second album as a leader, he was already making plenty of waves with the sound of his guitar! The session lines Wes up with the very tight rhythm team of Tommy Flanagan on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Albert Heath on drums – all of whom lay back and mostly let Wes take center stage – sparkling on a number of original tunes that include "West Coast Blues", "Mister Walker", and "D Natural Blues". Other tracks include a great fast take on Sonny Rollins' "Airegin", plus "In Your Own Sweet Way" and "Polka Dots & Moonbeams". LP, Vinyl record album

This is the small combo recording of tracks from the legendary jazz score to I Want To Live! Although not featured that prominently in the film, the band of Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Bud Shank, and others were a pretty tight little group – even though it was strange to see this west coast whitebread group playing in scenes of jazz/crime/evil. The record's a nice one, though, and features some of the livelier playing you'll hear from the players. Tracks are long, and titles include "Black Nightgown", "Night Watch", and the raging "Theme From I Want To Live". LP, Vinyl record album

Cotillion, 1979. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Possibly the greatest moment ever from Sister Sledge – a set that has the Philly quartet teaming with the Chic team of Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards! Rodgers' guitar brings in a hell of a groove to the record – that choppy, skittish sound that made Chic such a favorite at the time – which makes for a surprisingly great combination with the sweeter vocals of the group. There's a definite sense of groove going on here – heard most famously in the huge hits "We Are Family" and "He's The Greatest Dancer" – and continuing strongly through other numbers like "Thinking Of You", "Easier To Love", "One More Time", and "Lost In Music". Sure, Esther Phillips and a few other 60s soul singers were recording Beatles tracks – but Mary Wells was the real deal, as she even had the support of the group itself, who made it known that she was one of their favorite American soul artists. This nice album on 20th Century features an all-Beatles set of tracks – with titles like "I Should Have Known Better", "Do You Want To Know A Secret", "Yesterday", "And I Love Him", and "Ticket To Ride". Polydor, 1970. Near Mint- ... $34.99
Although Tony Williams started out as one of the most subtle drummers of the 60s, this album has him coming a long way from his "new thing" Blue Note recordings – and taking off with enough power to reach the moon! The group featured is Williams classic Lifetime lineup – with John McLaughlin and Larry Young, who was also reaching far past his Blue Note groove here – and bassist Jack Bruce, who was working his jazz chops strongly after his years in Cream. There's a raw power here that cannot be denied – a ferocity that must have been incredibly fresh at the time, and which is still, today, one of the clearest visions of a jazz rock fusion that was soon muddied too quickly in the heady waters of 70s jazz. Titles include "To Whom It May Concern", "Right On", "This Night This Song", and "Allah Be Praised". LP, Vinyl record album

We could condemn this, but we actually find it pretty fascinating, as it confirms the strange black following that Jolson had, even though you would've expected him to only offend that audience. As a soul album, this maybe isn't the tip top of Wilson's catalog – but it's still a pretty unusual record, with titles that include "My Yiddishe Momme", "Sonny Boy", "Toot, Toot, Tootsie Goodbye", and "Swanee". Sweet and to-the-point work from a young Jackie McLean – the kind of hard-burning yet slightly-modern work he recorded best for Prestige in the late 50s! The album's a bit of a blowing session outing – with 2 different group, one a sextet with Curtis Fuller, Webster Young, and Gil Coggins; the other a quartet with Mal Waldron on piano – but thanks to the strong tone and vision of Jackie, there's a really unified feel to the set, and an edginess that makes the whole thing hang together nicely. For this unique session, George Braith offers up "two souls in one" – by playing both soprano sax and "stritch" simultaneously – in a two-reed mode that recalls the work of Roland Kirk during the 60s! The sound is incredible – as soulful as it is exotic – and matched here by some excellent backing that includes Grant Green on guitar, Donald Bailey on drums, and Billy Gardner on organ! Gardner's work on the set is especially nice – with a Larry Young-ish free approach to the organ, one that makes for lots of modal grooves that really work perfectly with Braith's sound! A damn great little record from Clifford Coulter – a set that's much tighter and more soul-based than his earlier funk albums for Impulse Records – but which comes together beautifully, too – thanks to help from Bill Withers in the studio! Bill produced, and the record has this perfect sort of balance – never too slick or uptight, but really focused too – that great warm groove that Withers found with his own music at Columbia – but set up here as a perfect foil for Coulter's truly amazing voice! The singer's got a depth that comes through right away – on both the ballads and the groovers – and the record's one of those under-discovered gems that we've dug for years – proof that some really amazing soul music was coming out on major labels, between the hits. Withers plays lots of keyboards on the record – and titles "Another Day", "You And I Together", "Nothing In The World Is Free", "Don't Wanna See You Cry", "Magic Carpet Ride", "Maybe It's Better To Go", and "The Better Part Of Me". Very unique work from Dr Buzzard's Savannah Band – a set that bears all the unmistakeable touches of group leader August Darnell! The set's definitely got the older aesthetic that Darnell brought to his work at the time – possibly even more so than the group's first album – and it's also got a wonderfully acoustic approach to the music, one that uses older jazz inflections mixed with rootsier percussion – almost a late 70s club update of older swing and Latin modes! The tunes are beautifully penned too – most often starting out with a real sort of 30s or 40s style, then sweeping nicely into more of a 70s groove – but always without any sense of gimmick or trickery. The great Dr John at his freaky deaky best – working here in a mindblowing mix of New Orleans roots and late 60s psych – all served up in some heady studio space and instrumental touches! The sound's unlike anything that ever went before – and is way better here than on some of John's later, straighter material – clearly the work of years of creative genius, as the Doctor, Mac Rebennack, draws on both his heritage from the Crescent City, and his years of work in the underground rock scene in LA! Harold Batiste handled the arrangements – and the record really paves the way for so many famous LA/New Orleans albums to come in the 70s – but never with results this mindblowingly trippy. The tracks are wild, funky, and messed-up New Orleans R&B filtered through a heavy dose of psychedelics – and titles include "Mama Roux", "Croker Courtbullion", "Gris Gris Gumbo Ya Ya", and the original version of "I Walk On Guilded Splinters". A killer album of crossover soul from the mid 70s – one that dropped like a bomb when it hit, and gave this UK group a number of big hits in America! Keyboardist Rod Temperton wrote all the tracks on the album – and he's got keen talent for both funky numbers and ballads. If soul stations played album side specials the way that classic rock stations do, side one would be in heavy rotation – as it kicks off with the funky title cut, rolls into the hit "Boogie Nights", cuts to the sample classic "Ain't No Half Steppin" (forever made famous by Big Daddy Kane), and steps into the moody ballad "Always & Forever". A key posthumous release from Otis Redding – material recorded in 1967 before his untimely early death, released in 1969 to a very eager audience for work from the late soul singer! The album's a bit less classic than some of Redding's earlier Stax sides, but is still head and shoulders above most of his contemporaries – produced with a tight Memphis groove by Steve Cropper, and featuring a fair bit of lesser-known originals by Otis. Given that most of these numbers weren't really hits, the album's a nicely fresh take on Redding's career – especially if you're tired of his too-familiar territory from earlier in the 60s. There's definitely a bit of Black Magic in the mix – as there's a fresh feel here that really shows the changes Motown was making at the start of the 70s – with some echoes of the style used with the Jackson 5 – no surprise, given that the album's genius track "Bless You", was written by The Corporation! That track is worth the price of the album alone – and has this incredible wall of sound arrangement, with Martha singing verse after verse about the religiosity of love. Side one is a very long version of "In A Mellow Tone", with a blowing session solo approach – and side two features shorter tracks like "Budd Johnson", "Young Bean", and "De Dar". LP, Vinyl record album
(70s pressing in a green cover, with some ring and edge wear.)

✨✧ VariousIce Cream & Suckers – South African Soul ... LP
Mercury, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An incredible album of early 60s soul tracks from South Africa – issued here in the US by Mercury! The record's got some amazing stuff – including at least 2 tracks that seem to be directly ripped off later by Hugh Masekela for "Grazing in the Grass". Titles include "Brown Pepper" by Cassius The Great, "Ice Cream & Suckers" by Soweto Stockvel Septette, "Mr Bull No 4" by Mr. Bull, "Sweetie Love" by Jabulani Quads, "School In" by SDV Swing Band, and "Lindi" by TV Sisters. Great stuff! LP, Vinyl record album
(A nice copy! Cover has a very small cutout hole.)

✨✧ Gene AmmonsBrother Jug ... LP
Prestige, 1970. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Classic jazz funk from tenor giant Gene Ammons – really reinventing himself here after some time off the scene in the 60s! The record has Ammons coming from an older generation to set a new fire with the fresh Prestige jazz funk sound at the start of the 70s – working in a very cool combo that features funky drums from Bernard Purdie, plus organ from Sonny Phillips and guitar from the great Billy Butler – another player who was making a fresh mark for himself on Prestige at the time. Titles include the funky nugget "Jungle Strut", a nice version of "Son of A Preacher Man", plus "Ger-ru", which features Junior Mance on piano. LP, Vinyl record album

First Priority, 1988. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
From around the same time as the "What More Can I Say" LP and just about as dope as their hits from that LP, but with more mellow production, and nice use of the "Freddie's Dead" sample. 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Chuck BerryNew Juke Box Hits ... LP
Chess, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
As with many of the Chuck Berry full LPs for Chess, this one's filled with some great obscure material that always gets eclipsed by Chuck's big hits. Despite the idea that these would be "new jukebox hits", the material has an approach that was probably a bit too hard for radio, but that's ok with us! Titles include "13 Question Method", "Don't You Lie To Me", "The Way It Was Before", "Away From You", "I'm Talking About You", and "Stop & Listen". LP, Vinyl record album
