✨✧ Ruby RushtonIronside ... CD
22A (UK), 2019. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Completely fantastic work from Ruby Rushton – a UK quartet that we completely love to death – and who sound better here than ever before! Although classic, the special vibe of the group is a bit hard to describe – as they've got a special sense of flow, a special balance of electric and acoustic – spiritual and soulful, but also somewhat understated too – all of which is what makes them so great, and one of the most exciting combos we've heard in recent years! There's this slow-glowing quality that's maybe inherited from Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower" – energy that builds and flows from the Fender Rhodes and piano of Adian Shepherd, the trumpet of Nick Walters, and the flute and soprano sax of Edward Cawthorne – all given this nice crackle on drums from Tim Carnegie, a musician who seems to have absorbed the inventive London rhythms of the early part of this century, then found a way to take them back down to earth. The whole thing's fantastic – funky, yet not funk – filled with spirit, but not the usual spiritual jazz either – completely in its own space, on titles that include "The Target", "Where Are You Now", "Ironside", "Prayer For Grenfell", "Pingwin (Requiem For Komeda)', and "One Mo Dram". CD features two bonus alternate takes too! CD

TenderloniousHard Rain ... LP
22A (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $12.99 20.99
A very different album than the previous Tenderlonious record – but a set that's still overflowing with the soulful sounds that made us love his music in the first place! Last time around, Tenderlonious worked with the 22A Arkestra – a group of labelmates that fleshed out his sound – but here, things are very stripped-down, electric, and keyboard-heavy – kind of a fresh take on fusion for the 21st Century, in a way that pulls the genre through years of rhythm revolutions – as most of the drums and other elements here are programmed, but still with a loose, creative vibe that matches the keyboards. Titles include "Another State Of Consciousness", "Casey Jr", "Hard Rain", "Buffalo Gurl", "Low Tide", "Love You", "Workin Me Out", and "Aesop Thought". LP, Vinyl record album

TenderloniousOn Flute ... LP
22A (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
Soulful reedman Tenderlonious plays flute this time around – but as always, it's the overall sound that makes the record so great – not just the solo bits on flute, but all the keyboards, basslines, and beats – stretched out in this cool 21st Century take on funky fusion! The music is jazz at the core, but more electrified too – with a straightforward funky groove on some numbers, and some more enigmatic modes on others – all a great blend of keyboards and flutes, which often share the same tonal range. Titles include "Dale's Corner", "Autumn Leaves", "Ghana", "Odeo Bushi", "In A Sentimental Mood", and "Song For My Father" – and the three tunes with familiar titles are actually originals by the man himself. TenderloniousQuarantena ... CD
22A (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A much more electric set than previous releases from Tenderlonious – and a record that's a bit darker, too – as you might guess from the title and cover! Tender handles all his usual funky flute lines, but brings in a fair bit of keyboards too – Fender Rhodes, Yamaha, Arp, Korg, and Roland models – with additional keyboard work from Dave Smith, who also brings in some effects that broaden the sound – almost as if the previous funky jazz elements from the reedman were being filtered through an old school 4AD sort of lens! Some of the songs have titles that mean plenty at the time the album was recorded – and tracks include "Covid Blues", "Forty Nights", "Utopia", "Lockdown Boogie", "Quarantena", "Total Recall", "Moments Notice", and "Maskup/Gloveup". CD
Also available Quarantena ... LP 25.99

TenderloniousRagas From Lahore – Improvisations With Jaubi ... CD
22A (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
One of the most compelling records we've ever heard from UK reedman Tenderlonious – and that's saying a lot, because most of his other recordings have been pretty damn great as well! This set has Tenderlonious playing flute and soprano sax, stretching out on long improvised ragas with the group Jaubi – a trio who use tabla, sarangi, and guitar in modes that echo older currents of Indian music, but also move things towards a slightly more contemporary vibe – with unusual drone elements that enhance the acoustic instruments in a very subtle way – and which only seem to make the flute lines stand out even more by comparison! Titles include "Kirwani", "Impressions", "Azeem", "Shahla Bagh", and "Azadi". CD

Tenderlonious featuring the 22 ArchestraShakedown ... CD
22A (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
We kinda want to hate the guy for such a hokey name like Tenderlonious – but this album's a surprisingly great little gem, and one that mixes lots of openly-blown work on flute with some sweet keyboards and other jazzy rhythms! The approach is maybe a bit like the Jason Lindh or Chris Hinze albums of the early 70s – and by that, we mean their better sets – with a flute approach that's less biting than the generation of Herbie Mann and Roland Kirk, using the instrument more in these spacious ways that are pretty darn great – especially against the heavy percussion and basslines of the 22Archestra! There's a few nice moments that almost have a Bobbi Humphrey sort of warmth – and titles include "Togo", "SV Interlude", "Expansions", "The Shakedown", "Yussef's Groove", "Red Sky At Night", and "You Decide". Nick WaltersActive Imagination ... CD
22A (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
We really loved Nick Walters the last time around, and on this set the trumpeter seems to be even more visionary than before – really going for this expansive approach to his music, and serving things up with a vibe that maybe makes him one of the most spiritual leaders on the contemporary London scene! The tracks here are all originals, and work together perfectly as a whole album – with Nick setting things up strongly with his own trumpet at the start, then folding in these beautiful contributions from Ed Cawthorne on flute and soprano sax, Jeff Guntren on tenor, Rebecca Nash on piano, Nim Sadot on bass, Max Hallett on drums, and Joseph Deenmamoode on percussion. Some tunes have a modal rhythm, but others get a bit more complex, although still with a similar organic pulse – and titles include "So Long Chef", "Gordian Knot (parts 1 & 2)", "Dansoman Last Stop", and "Ahimsa". ✨✧ Ruby RushtonTrudi's Songbook – Volumes 1 & 2 ... LP
22A (UK), 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Ruby Rushton is the name of the group, not an individual member – and it's also a name that's sure to be at the top of your list once you hear this incredible debut! The album's got this fantastic blend of funky and spiritual grooves – all played with a quality that's soulful, but effortless – almost vintage, but never trying to sound forced or copycat at all – just this easy-flowing groove that's incredible, and which kind of gives the record an instant classic sound from the very first note! Edward Cawthorne is the ersatz leader – as he wrote and arranged the whole set – but his work on flute and saxes is just one part of the album's wonderful groove, which also includes trumpet from Nick Walters, keyboards from Aidan Shepherd, bass from Fergus Ireland, drums from Eddie Hick, and percussion from Joseph Deenmamode – a lineup who seem to be tied together in soul and spirit right from the start. The London-based group are rock-solid throughout – hitting territory that's maybe more soulful than some of the spiritual currents of the Gondwana Records scene a few years before, but with an equal sort of depth. Titles include "Trudi's Mood", "Moonlight Woman", "Prayer For Yusef", "Where Are You Now", "Elephant & Castle", "The Camel's Back", "Song For Christopher", "Tisbury Truckin", "Together At Last", "Charlotte Emma Victoria", "Trudi's Mood (part 2)", and a nice remake of Herbie Hancock's "Butterfly".
