S Tone IncBody & Soul ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2020. New Copy ... $26.99 32.99
The funkiest album so far from Stefano Tirone – aka S Tone – a set that's got a much clubbier vibe than some of his other records, and a very strong influence both from vintage boogie and funky jazz! Tirone plays plenty of Wurlitzer and other keyboards on the set – and most tunes have jazzy energy at the core, as you'd expect from Schema Records – but also often open up in ways that are more deeply soulful than both the artist and label might make us expect! Toco sings on a few tracks, and steps aside for other singers who include Afra Kane, Laura Fedele, Gui Hargreaves, and Priscila Ribas – who work with Stefano to change up the colors from song to song – a but like in that old DJ/producer soundsystem mode. Titles include "Flying Away", "No Meio Do Samba", "In The Name Of Love", "Midnight Sun", "Move On", "Pra Voce", "Flying Away", and "Blow My Mind". LP, Vinyl record album

Twilite ToneClearing ... LP
Stones Throw, 2020. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
A really great Stones Throw debut from Twilite Tone – a Chicago beatmaker who's been one of our local heroes for years, and who finally gets the wider exposure he's deserved for way too long! Tone's done some big name work for Common, Kanye, and others – but here, he's very much at home inside his wonderful little shell – creating these endlessly creative sounds that really move past the obvious, and which showcase the kind of richer sonic palette we would have guessed from his record shopping habits over the years! There's a few 80s electro modes that come as a great surprise, mixed with harder core elements too – and there's occasional moments of sweetness, too – a emotional range that comes across nicely, on titles that include "N'Loveagain", "Tuff Love", "The Sound", "Do It Properly", "Taxi Cab Confessions", "The Lite", "Baby Steps", and "Ancestors & Angels". Gene HarrisTone Tantrum ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $13.99
Sweet sweet keyboards from the amazing Gene Harris – one of his seminal electric sides for Blue Note in the 70s – recorded between his earliest fame in the Three Sounds, and his later return to acoustic styles in the 80s! The sound here is equal parts jazz and soul – as Gene's working with vocalist/arranger Jerry Peters, who brings in a good deal of his own groove to the tracks – giving them a strong focus that's sometimes missing from other solo Harris sets. Both Peters and Harris play Fender Rhodes and other keyboards on the album – alongside a variety of players that include Donald Byrd on trumpet, Harvey Mason on drums, and Chuck Rainey on bass. Tracks include the Peters tunes "If You Can't Find Love" and "A Minor", a two-part remake of Duke Pearson's "Christo Redentor", the sweet stepper "Peace Of Mind", and a strong vocal take on Stevie Wonder's "As". Frank SinatraFrank Sinatra Conducts Tone Poems Of Color ... CD
Capitol, Late 50s. Used ... $16.99
An incredible oddity in the Sinatra catalog at Capitol – one of the few albums that actually features him as an orchestra conductor, not a singer. Others we can recall with Frank in this mode are Capitol albums by Peggy Lee and Dean Martin – but Tone Poems is unique, a real "concept" album that has Sinatra working through color-based tunes ("Yellow", "Green", "Red", "Silver", and so on), written by some of the top arrangers of his years, including Nelson Riddle, Billy May, Gordon Jenkins, Andre Previn, and Alec Wilder. The overall approach is more serious and less hokey than you'd expect – and while we certainly miss Frank's vocals, the scope of the album also shows his rich growth as an artist during the Capitol years. Blue Note, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful work from the Marvels group of Charles Lloyd – a combo that not only features his own great sounds on tenor and flute, but also the very strong presence of Bill Frisell on guitar! Although Lloyd recorded famously with guitar players back in his early years, the sound here is very different – filtered through the sonic explorations of his albums for ECM, and inflected with that sense of color that only seems to get stronger and stronger in the work of Frisell over the years. That quality is also augmented by use of the steel guitar in the quintet, handled by Greg Leisz – alongside the bass of Reuben Rogers and drums of Eric Harland. Titles include remakes of two 60s gems – Ornette Coleman's "Rambling" and Gabor Szabo's "Lady Gabor" – plus the originals "Tone Poem", "Dismal Swamp", and "Prayer". CD

An incredible collection of work from the legendary bassist William Parker – not a package of older material, but a full ten albums' worth of new recordings done expressly for this set – showing Parker not only as a budding multi-instrumentalist over the space of the past few years – but also a very collaborative composer, with a much wider range of expression than anyone might have guessed a few decades ago! Parker is still a completely essential part of the avant jazz underground, but he's also emerging as a mature statesman – able to bridge both scenes and generations with material like this – a hugely collaborative effort that features contributions from Lisa Sokolov, Kyoko Kitamura, Ellen Christi, Jalalu Kalvert Nelson, Eri Yamamoto, Raina Sokolov Gonzalez, Andrea Wolper, the Universal Tonality String Quartet, and other groups as well. Each CD features a different side of Parker's creative genius – and together, the package is maybe the richest statement of his powers we've ever heard! CD

Will BernardAncient Grains ... CD
Posi tone, 2021. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
Guitarist Will Bernard is in a mighty sweet trio here – one that features lots of excellent work on Hammond organ from Sam Yahel, plus tight drums from Donald Edwards! The vibe is great – as Yahel's got a far-reaching sound on the instrument that really pushes things past the obvious – maybe Larry Young as a jumping-off point, but a voice that's all his own – echoed chromatically and matched at a solo level by Bernard's work on guitar! Edwards has a nice crackle to his drums, but he's never locked in tight either – and really matches the energy of the other two, on a set that's filled with original tunes by Will – titles that include "Dry Land Tourist", "Stone Valley", "Five Finger Discount", "Right As Rain", "Temescal", "Wake Up Call", and "Trilobite". Tenorist Ralph Bowen blows some strong magic here – the kind of tone and timing that really transforms the more familiar numbers chosen for the set – so that older standards are turned inside out and opened up as new vehicles for expression – yet all while still managing to swing! The rhythm trio is tight, but fluid – and features Bill O'Connell on piano, Kenny Davis on bass, and Donald Edwards on drums – yet to our ears, Bowen's the main star on the record – and we've never heard him sounding so powerfully creative! Most tracks have a strong focus from start to finish, but cover a surprising amount of ground – and titles include "Yesterdays", "No Moon At All", "Isn't It Romantic", "Dream Dancing", "By Myself", and "You Stepped Out Of A Dream". Posi tone, 2014. New Copy ... $11.99 17.98
Great Hammond work from Brian Charette – served up in a style that's a bit different than most contemporary organ jazz sessions! The tracks here are sometimes short – like the old soul jazz organ singles back in the 60s – and Charette mixes things up nicely with a few great covers of soundtrack and pop moments – a bit like some Jimmy McGriff album on Sue Records! Yet Charette's also got a much wider range of sounds than McGriff ever did – a knowledge of the Hammond that embraces all the changes from Larry Young forward – worked out with a sweet trio that includes either Avi Rothbard or Yotam Silberstein on guitar, and Mark Ferber or Jordan Young on drums. Joe Sucato guests on tenor on the album's one long track – and titles include "The Kicker", "Good Tipper", "Another Quarter", "Standing Still", "You Only Live Twice", "Up Up & Away", and "Time Of The Season". Ed CherrySoul Tree ... CD
Posi tone, 2016. New Copy ... $11.99 17.98
A killer guitar and Hammond session with a really sublime sort of sound – a groove that's wonderfully free of cliche – and which has an open, spacious quality that few artists can match! Given the instrumentation, the album's steeped in tradition, but never tries to just rehash an older Prestige Records vibe – and instead guitarist Ed Cherry and organist Kyle Koehler find a way of soaring out in their own spirits – opening up strongly in a bass-less trio that only features the drums of Anwar Marshall to keep things snapping along. The pairing is perfect – on the level of Grant Green with Larry Young, or Pat Martino with Don Patterson – yet very much with its own spirit, too. Cherry's arrangements are great, too – providing very fresh takes on familiar tunes, alongside his own compositions. Titles include "Central Park West", "A New Blue", "Rachel's Step", "Ode To Angela", "Little Sunflower", "Little Girl Big Girl", and "Peace". CD

Seminal 70s work from one of the most righteous jazz musicians ever! On this set, Alice Coltrane moves past the rawer spiritual sound of her Impulse albums – working with a more focused vision and an approach to jazz that takes her way past the identity of just being "Mrs Coltrane", into territory that's a more perfect expression of her spiritual vision. The approach calls for more ambitious orchestrations, yet never in a way that overwhelms the jazz basis of the music – and Alice herself is on Fender Rhodes, organ, and harp – working with players who include Fred Jackson and Hubert Laws on reeds, Oscar Brashear on trumpet, George Bohannon on trombone, Charlie Haden on bass, Ben Riley on drums, and Armando Peraza on congas. Titles include "Spiritual Eternal", "Om Supreme", "Morning Workshop", "Wisdom Eye", and "Los Caballos". CD

Patrick Cornelius steps out here both as a strong leader, and as a great songwriter too – on a set that's filled with almost all original material from the pen of the alto saxophonist – tunes that have a strong sense of color and verve, which makes the record one of the most illuminating to date from Cornelius! The group's also got a real strength in the piano of John Escreet – who has some sharper edges that really enrich the vibe of the record – and Patrick's alto lines are also balanced with a nice sense of depth from trombonist Nick Vayenas, a player we don't know at all – but who seems to be finding his own with the set. The rest of the group features Ben Allison on bass and Mark Ferber on drums – and titles include "Precious Souls", "Telescope", "Big Pictures", "This Should Be Fun", "For Morgan", and "Restless Willow". Tony DavisGolden Year ... CD
Posi tone, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99 16.99
Tony Davis is a jazz guitarist with a difference – an artist who's not out to revolutionize his instrument in jazz, but who still finds a way to play with a very distinct approach! Tony's quality isn't easy to put in words – he's not working the fret in a weird way, or using any sort of effects or gimmicks – but he does get a very specific sound out of the instrument, one that's full of shimmering colors and light – often quite chromatic, but usually with a dexterity that might match more sharper-toned musicians! Davis' sound springs into life from the very first note on the set – given nice direction from David Bryant on piano, Dezron Douglas on bass, and Eric McPherson on drums – and the record also features work from Steve Wilson on flute and alto on two tracks, and Steve Davis on trombone on two as well. Alina Engibaryan sings on two of the album's tracks – "Lake Sebago" and "Orange Feathers", both originals by Davis – and other tunes include "Night Ride", "Braeburn", "El Gran Birane", "Hypnagogia", and a nice version of "Con Alma". Fantastic work from Michael Dease – a player who seems to get better and better with each new record, and who's clearly becoming one of the top trombonists on the planet! Dease has a dexterity here that's amazing, and an ability to hit a sense of soul that's wonderful too – a quality that's augmented by the organ work on the record from Jim Alfredson, which shows that a trombone can groove equally well as a tenor in the company of a Hammond! Other players include Gregory Tardy on tenor, and Anthony Stanco on trumpet – and a number of tracks have percussion added to the sharp drums of Ulysses Owens Jr, which makes for a mighty nice groove. Most titles are originals – and tunes include "The Next Level", "Climb The Mountain", "Zanderfied", "Lake Toxaway Getaway", "Ritmo De Brevard", and "Word To The Wise". CD

A smoking little set from tenorist Sam Dillon – a musician who's really coming into his own as a leader, after a number of years working in the ensembles of others! Sam's got this nice bite on his reed – which makes for a sharp tone on the numbers here that feature just a quartet, and creates even more fire when Sam adds in a few other horns to the mix – which he does on tracks here that feature extra work from Michael Dease on trombone, Max Darche on trumpet, and Andrew Gould on alto. There's a cascading sense of colors on the numbers with added horns that we really love – but Dillon also balances things out with his own rich voice on the quartet numbers – which feature work from Theo Hill on piano and Fender Rhodes, David Wong on bass, and Anwar Marshall on drums. Titles include "Shift", "Two Part Problem", "Flight Of Mind", "Force Field", "Go For The Jugular", and "Straight Up & Down". CD

Posi tone, 2014. New Copy ... $11.99 17.98
We've really grown to love pianist Orrin Evans in a trio setting, but he's a surprisingly strong talent at the helm of this large group too – an ensemble with a rich sound and a sense of feeling that really matches Evans' own piano! There's a boldness to the music that really brings out a whole new side of Evans – this sense of majesty that's always lurking in the way he approaches the keyboard in a smaller group, but which takes off here with work from a larger group of saxophones, trumpets, and trombones. Evans gets in many great solos – and other key moments come from Marcus Strickland on tenor or soprano sax, Stacy Dillard on tenor, Todd Bashore on alto, Conrad Herwig on trombone, Tatum Greenblatt on trumpet, and Ralph Peterson on drums. Titles include the originals "In My Soul", "Explain It To Me", "Dita", "Prayer For Columbine", and "Mother's Touch (parts 1 & 2)". CD

A brilliant record from tenorist Ken Fowser – a player who seems to grab our attention more and more with each new record – both as a soloist and as a rock-solid leader who always brings something special to a session! Ken dedicates this record to the inspiration of pianist Harold Mabern – and you can really feel a lot of Mabern's warmth and soul flowing through the record – as the tunes bristle with the kind of soulful imagination that we always loved in Mabern's music from years back – even though they're all originals by Ken, with piano handled beautifully by Tadatka Unno! This might be the first time we've ever heard Unno on record, but we're already in love – and the rest of the group features Josh Bruneau on trumpet and flugelhorn, Vince Dupont on bass, and Joe Strasser on drums. The first solo album as a leader from vibist Behn Gillece – a player who's been making great sounds on other sessions for the Posi-Tone label in recent years! Behn's voice is very firmly upfront here – on a set of all original compositions that really showcase his unique approach to the vibes – a style that can be hard and biting one minute, but filled with flowing currents of color the next – a mode that sometimes owes a bit to Bobby Hutcherson, but which really stands out as Gillece's own unique approach – and which is one of the freshest voices on vibes we've heard in years! The group's a quintet – with frequent musical partner Ken Fowser on tenor, plus Rick Germanson on piano and Fender Rhodes, Paul Gill on bass, and Charles Ruggiero on drums. Theo Hill just seems to get better and better as the years go on – a fantastically sensitive pianist, but one with a hell of a lyrical swing as well – here moving into territory that might even rival Cedar Walton or Kenny Barron at their best! Theo wrote a good number of the tunes here – and even the non-original numbers are taken in this blocky way that can't help but swing, even when things get slightly far-out (although that's almost never the case) – and support is wonderfully strong, from the great Rudy Royston on drums, and Rashaan Carter on bass. Hill plays a bit of electric piano, but most of the set is acoustic – and he makes that instrument ring out even more loud and proud than the electric keys – on titles that include "Cyclic Episode", "Interstellar Adventures", "Black Comedy", "For Those Who Do", "Revelations", "Gyre", "The Comet", "Retrograde", and "Enchanted Forest". Oh and Royston have this round presence that really resonates strongly with Art's piano – creating this wave of soulful energy from the ground up, even on the mellower moments – with a tonal depth that's sophisticated, yet never forced at all. When McCaslin comes into the mix, his sound is a bit more separate from the three – yet in a way that only underscores their cohesion and beautiful sensitivity together. Hirahara's work here is a great reminder that a jazz musician doesn't need to go outside to make their voice known – as Art's very original right from the very first note – given superb accompaniment from Boris Kozlov on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums – each of whom contribute a song to the date too. The keyboards shift throughout – as Orrin Evans plays acoustic piano on five titles, and Adam Faulk handles Fender Rhodes on seven more – creating a nice shift in color that furthers the spirit of the tunes, driven by rhythm work from Madison Rast on bass and Anwar Marshall on drums. The lineup here is great – and includes Behn Gillece on vibes, Josh Lawrence on trumpet, Roxy Coss on tenor, Theo Hill on piano, Peter Brendler on bass, and Vinnie Sperrazza on drums – moving with that sort of sharp sense of arrangement we've really come to expect from their scene, but always with plenty of room for the solo voices to ring out loud and clear! As you'll know from these pages, we really love the vibes of Gillece, which sound excellent here next to Hill's piano – on titles that include "Happy Juice", "West Village", "Hush Puppy", "Vortex", "King Cobra", "Follow Suit", "Preachin'", and "I'm OK". Farnell NewtonBack To Earth ... CD
Posi tone, 2017. New Copy ... $11.99 17.98
This might be the first date as a leader we've ever seen from trumpeter Farnell Newton – but it's already one that will have us looking out for more! Newton's got a tight, soulful sound on his horn – deft at times, but often more concerned with a longer, wider flow – which is balanced sonically by the trombone of Kyle Molitor – and given a nicely lyrical twist from the piano of Greg Goebel, a musician who may well be the second star of the set! We love Goebel's presence – which maybe reminds us of early Cedar Walton at times – and his warmly ringing tones are supported by work from Dylan Sundstrom on bass and Christopher Brown on drums. As with many of the best Posi-Tone label releases, much of the work here is original, and written by the leader – with titles that include "The Roots", "Transcendentals", "Crossing The Tracks", "Sons Of The Sun", "Gazillionaire", and "Road To The South". Trumpeter Farnell Newton has been making music for a number of years – but he really seems to be taking off and finding his groove on recent albums for the Posi-Tone labels – records, like this one, that really have Newton demonstrating his strong ear for phrasing, and his ability to come up with just the right sort of a tune for both his solos and his sidemen! Here, the group features core work from a great quartet – Art Hirihara on piano, Boris Kozlov on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums and percussion – a lineup that features shifting contributions from Jaleel Shaw, Patrick Cornelius, and Braxton Cook on alto saxes – plus Brandon Wright on tenor and Michael Dease on trombone! Just about every tune has an additional horn joining Newton in the lead, and the sense of interplay is what really makes the record special – tight, but very personal solo work from all involved – on titles that include "Affectionately Roy", "Feel The Love", "A Child Not Born", "The Bluest Eyes", "Pale", and "Laws Of Motion". A tremendous trumpeter, set up here in his best format to date – a really heavy duty quartet that features tenor from Brandon Wright, drums from Rudy Royston, and Hammond from Brian Charette – who blows us away even more than usual with his skills on both the keys and the pedals at the bottom! Royston's drums are always great – and here, he's got this snapping, crackling energy that seems to light a fuse right from the very first note – which Charette fans into full flames of sound, topped by these bold lines and soaring solos from Newton and Wright – two horns that have a really rich power together, before breaking off into really wonderful solos. The whole thing's great – a cut above for even the always-great Posi-Tone label – and titles include "Holding Still", "The Roots", "Another Day Another Jones", "Gas Station Hot Dog", and "The Five AM Strut". Posi tone, 2021. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
Great work from Out To Dinner – an all-star group who certainly weren't out to lunch when this set was recorded – as it's got all the sharp crackle of some of the members' other work on the Posi-Tone label! The lineup is a bit different than the previous record, but every bit as wonderful – theses bold colors from the vibes of Behn Gillece, soulful flow from the tenor of Nicole Glover, well-punctuated trumpet from Giveton Gelin, round bass from Boris Kozlov, and sharply snapping drums from Donald Edwards – joined by the alto sax of Patrick Cornelius on three of the album's thirteen tracks. Tunes are all relatively short – between four and six minutes – but are mostly originals from group members, and really pack a lot of imagination into a short space. Titles include "Asami's Playland", "Random", "The Essential Passion", "Abe Duct", "Something From Nothing", "Rebecca's Dance", and "Into The Shadows". CD

Twin Tone/Rhino, 1981. New Copy 4CD & LP ... $78.99 79.99
The Replacements look a lot more punk rock on the cover than on some of their later albums for Warner Brothers – and they sound a lot more punk, too – packing in 18 short songs on this early set that blisters with their youthful, inventive energy! Even working at a level that's hard and fast, Paul Westerberg is still a hell of a songwriter and singer – and manages to pack these songs with a depth of expression that most of his contemporaries wouldn't hit until years later – that open, honest approach that had these guys coming out of nowhere, and blowing everyone's mind at the time. Titles include "Takin A Ride", "Carless", "Hangin Downtown", "Johnny's Gonna Die", "More Cigarettes", "Shiftless When Idle", "Shutup", "Raised In The City", and "Somethin To Du". This amazing package is overflowing with goodies – CD1 features the 2021 remaster of the album, plus a b-side; CD2 features The Early Recordings, with 25 rare tracks; CD3 features Tape's Rolling, with studio outtakes, alternates, and home demos; CD4 features a KFAI concert from 1981, with 27 tracks in all! Then, the LP features The Alternate Sorry Ma – a completely different version of the core album – all wrapped up in a heavy, hardcover book package – with pages of rare photos, liner notes, and memorabilia! The tunes all have a great laidback vibe – more in a rocksteady instrumental mode than an upbeat ska one – and Titles include "Do The Reload", "Easter Island", "Some Day", "Love and Justice", "Java", "Destroy Them", and "Distant Drums". The combo is a quartet, but soar out with a spirit that makes you feel like you're hearing the energy of a much larger ensemble – a quality that maybe comes in part from the work of pianist Art Hirihara, who always seems to have this grand sense of flow – driven on strongly here by the bass of Boris Kozlov and drums of Rudy Royston! The first we've heard as a leader from saxophonist Alexa Tarantino – a great talent who's really been bubbling under on other ensemble records for the Posi-Tone label, and who's very much at the start of a great career of her own! Alexa plays some mighty nice soprano sax on the album – plus tenor and flute – all with this nice sense of edge in her tone, mixed with a more forward-moving flow – this subtle quality that really keeps things interesting, and which has us held surprisingly rapt whenever one of her horns stretches out in a solo. Most tunes are originals, with this fresh sense of timing that really works with her tone – and the rest of the group features Christian Sands on piano, Joe Martin on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums – and a few tracks also feature trombone from Nick Finzer. Tenorist Doug Webb jumps into the fray right from the very first note on this excellent set – a further continuation of his recent development as both a soloist and writer! Webb's got a style that's deeply classic, yet very personal too – not just a rehash of older tenor modes, but a way of drawing on their depth, and refocusing it into these surprisingly nimble lines – beautifully rhythmic passages that have the tonal colors really lighting up along the way – as Doug's horn resonates strongly with the piano lines from Peter Zak, over the more than able rhythms from Ben Wolfe on bass and Rudy Royston on drums! The whole record's got a simple, understated power that comes across very well on first listen – and only seems to delight more and more upon repeated spins – and titles include the Webb originals "Back East", "Sally's Song", "RDW Esq", "Stanley", "Mr Green", and "Snicker's Lament". The moods here are anything but blue – as the group's got an upbeat, positive way of laying into a tune right from the start – as they take on a range of compositions by Charles Mingus, but all served up in a lean quartet formation that really helps transform the songs! Diego Rivera is often in the lead on tenor, and the rest of the group features Boris Kozlov on bass, Joe Strasser on drums, and Art Hirihara on piano – save for a few tracks where David Kikoski comes in on the keys! If you dig Mingus as much as us, you'll recognize most of the melodies – but the treatment is nicely fresh, and also not nearly as slavish as some other Mingus-related projects – really breathing new life into songs that include "Reincarnation Of A Lovebird", "Orange Was The Color Of Her Dress", "Nostalgia In Times Square", "Tonight At Noon", "Better Get It In Your Soul", and "Pithecathropus Erectus". The masterpiece by one of the greatest, most sincere rock bands of all time! Let It Be veers all over the place, or at least as much as jangly rock music can, in the best way possible. Includes the pseudo twangy opener "I Will Dare", with the distinctly midwestern hardcore of the group's earlier years showing up on "We're Coming Out" and "Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out", and Westerberg's great heart-on-sleeve, ragged balladry appearing for the closers. Like the Meat Puppets and X, the 'Mats really found themselves after they shed the rigid rules of punk rock, and developed into something every bit as honest and heartfelt. They followed the rock songbook just enough to keep their work warm and familiar, but with way too huge and hard-pounding heart to ever seem even the least bit derivative. Hell, they even make Kiss's "Black Diamond" sound sincere! Other tracks include "Favorite Thing", "Androgynous", "Unsatisfied", "Seen Your Video", "Gary's Got A Boner", "Sixteen Blue" and "Answering Machine". LP, Vinyl record album

The group name doesn't get at the heart of the sound, though – as there's a sharp, soulful focus to the music throughout – kind of a classic hardbop approach, but with maybe a more contemporary sense of freshness, especially on the solo voices – which is no surprise, given that the sextet features Nick Finzer on trombone, Alexa Tarantino on alto, Sam Dillon on tenor, Art Hirahara on piano, Boris Kozlov on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums! Both Hill and Ross have this open sense of sound and timing – often using the spaces between the notes as much as the notes themselves – even when things are moving at a more full-on level, which they do often – thanks to contributions from Rashaan Carter on bass and Mark Whitfield on drums! Yet it's the sonic interplay between the vibes and keys that really blow us away – maybe especially at the few points when Theo picks up Fender Rhodes, and balances out the record with even more warmth next to his acoustic tracks. The second half of the set was recorded on the same night, but has the great Toots Thielemans stepping in on harmonica – pairing with Bill at a level that's every bit as great as their famous Affinity album together – a sublime experience from these two mature masters of tone and timing. Titles with Toots include "Blue In Green", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "I Do It For Your Love", "Bluesette", and "Five". CD

Stan Getz & Joao GilbertoGetz/Gilberto #2 ... LP
Verve, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $29.99
A very different record than the first collaboration between Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto – but that's also one of the things that makes it great! The album's more of a split LP than a shared one – as side one features a live performance from the great mid 60s Stan Getz quartet that featured Gary Burton on vibes – a wonderfully cool combo that was very under-documented on record, and which makes a key appearance here. The combination of Burton's vibes and Stan's tenor is pure genius – a sound that's got all the subtle hues and cool colors of the Getz bossa recordings, but which is quite different overall. Stan's tone is amazing on these tunes – and titles include "Here's That Rainy Day", "Tonight I Shall Sleep With A Smile On My Face", "Grandfather's Waltz", and "Stan's Blues". Side two features Joao Gilberto without Stan – playing in a very groovy trio that's more straight bossa than most of his other US recordings – cool small combo grooving that's totally great! The lineup features Gilberto on guitar and vocals, Keeter Betts on bass, and Helcio Milito on drums – all working in a sweetly grooving mode on titles that include "Samba De Minha Terra", "Meditation", "Bim Bom", "Rosa Moreno", and "O Pato". Dexter Gordon on the European scene at the end of the 60s – blowing with that bold, well-formed tone that makes extended performances like this so great – almost a casebook lesson on tenor-based invention – set to some well-crafted rhythms by a trio that features Cees Slinger on piano, Jacques Schols on bass, and Han Bennink on drums! The players offer a nice change from some other Gordon dates of this nature – but still really let Dexter take the lead strongly on tenor – blowing openly on long takes of tunes that include "Junior", "Scrapple From The Apple", "Willow Weep For Me", and "Rhythm A Ning". A real moment of genius for Joe Henderson from the 80s – a spare trio session, recorded live at the Village Vanguard, in a mode that recalls Sonny Rollins classic sets there for Blue Note! And while Sonny often performed heavily in a trio setting, unfettered by chords in the rhythm section – this is a unique date for Joe, and he sounds brilliant throughout! Ron Carter and Al Foster provide a crisp but elastic foundation for Henderson's burnished melodies and solos in a very spacious setting – and this second volume features the tracks "Boo Boo's Birthday", "Cheryl", "Y Ya La Quiero", "Soulville", and "The Bead Game". A classic masterpiece from J Dilla – a record that set the tone for countless hip hop releases in years to come – but which still shows Jay Dee as one of the smartest, sharpest, most forward-thinking producers to rule the roost! The set's got some incredible live instrumentation – lots of funky drums from Karriem Riggins, and a wealth of Fender Rhodes and other keyboards from Dwele – two artists brought along from the Detroit underground by Dilla, in a lineup that also includes work from Frank N Dank, Blu, Phat Kat, and Beej. The whole thing is fantastic, this amazing blend of instrumentals and vocal numbers that show that hip hop had plenty of new territory to open up in the 21st century – on titles that even include tributes to some key inspirations – like "African Rhythms" (Oneness of Juju), "Brazilian Groove" (Earth Wind & Fire), and "Think Twice" (Donald Byrd). The whole thing is classic – and other cuts include "Rico Suave Bossa Nova", "Shake It Down", "Give it Up", "The Clapper", and "Come Get It". Incredible package – way more than just the album on funky 45s – as the set features 37 tracks in all, with instrumentals, alternates, and other gems! VariousZanzibara 2 – L'Age D'Or Du Taarab De Mombasa ... CD
Buda (France), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
Prepare to be blown away! The second volume of the excellent new Zanzibara series focuses on taraab music recorded on the tiny island-city of Momabasa – off the Kenyan coast – for the Mzuri label between 1965-1975. Unlike the more traditional, languorous taraab made in nearby Zanzibar, Mombasa taraab reveals a stronger African rhythmic attack and a diminished Arabic feel. But the real charm is the strong Bollywood influence! Indian cinema was a popular attraction beginning in the 30s, and some of the songs here are loose interpretations of certain film scenes. Each group prominently features either accordion or harmonium, but the most ingenious sound is provided by the tashkota, a Japanese string instrument the musicians amplified for a dazzling, twangy tone – in addition to the usual violins, hand percussion, oud, and fantastic, soulful vocals. The booklet includes great liner notes and wonderful photographs, too. Sixteen tracks in all by Matano Juma & Morning Star Orchestra, Yasseen Mohamed, Zuhura & Party, Ali Mkali & Mvita Orchestra, Zein Musical Party, Maulidi Musical Party, and Bin Brek. CD

An incredible piece by composer John Adams – easily one of his most important works ever, and one that rivals Einstein On The Beach for its transformation of older operatic forms! The subject matter is quite unique – President Nixon's famous visit to China in the early 70s – presented by Adams in some brilliantly pulsating minimalist modes – very Phillip Glass-like at times, especially in the way the energy builds – but also quite different, almost more personal, thanks to wonderfully-penned lyrics by Alice Goodman. Edo De Waart conducts the Orchestra Of St Luke's – and the recording quality is wonderful – perfect for the tone of the music! CD

Cannonball AdderleySomethin' Else (RVG Remaster Edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1958. Used ... $5.99
A landmark album – even if it was the only session that Cannonball Adderley ever cut for Blue Note! The album was recorded at a time when Adderley was working with Miles Davis – and as such, the session features a group that includes Miles, blowing trumpet in a cool tone that's a perfect offset to Cannonball's more soulful style on alto sax – also different than the sound of his brother Nat, who was Adderley's more frequent partner on records. The rest of the group includes Hank Jones on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Art Blakey on drums – and like John Coltrane's Blue Train, the record's more of an "special session" than the usual Blue Note album, but the strength of the players make it one of the more memorable records of its day! One of the few recorded meetings of alto saxophonist Charlie Mariano and pianist Toshiko Akioshi in the studio – quite strange given that they were a couple at the time! The session's easily one of the last great American sessions by either player – a work that shows Mariano's alto really building on the strengths of his work in the 50s, and Akioshi's piano shedding some of its early bop influences, and going for the richly-toned sound that would serve her greatly in the 70s. The long tracks here offer plenty of space for Charlie's sharp tone to really do its thing – and that raspy warmth of the 50s is even more deeply soulful at this point – and augmented by a new sense of composition that gives the record some of its best tracks. There's almost a nascent sense of spiritualism here – quite unusual for the time – and titles include "When You Meet Her", "Toshiko's Elegy", "Deep River", and "Little T". LP, Vinyl record album

A great contemporary entry in the mindblowing musical legacy of Aksak Maboul – a group who first started mixing up many different genres in the late 70s, then went on to maybe set the tone for the whole creative legacy of the Crammed Discs label! Original member Marc Hollander is still at the core – handling keyboards, reed instruments, percussion, and all sorts of sonic elements – mixing them with that creative musicality that always made his vision so unique. And singer Veronique Vincent is at the forefront of the group now, after a few previous collaborations – heading things up by co-writing the material with Hollander, and opening the door for a host of guests, who include Fred Frith on guitar and viola, and Steven Brown on vocals. Alexander's tone reminds us a lot of the Sonny Rollins sound of the mid 60s – that perfect, yet never too-polished style that Sonny was using when re-interpreting standards in a masterful demonstration of space and economy. The tracks on this set are a well-chosen lot – and include 2 classic Mal Waldron ballads, "Left Alone" and "Soul Eyes", and Alexander's own track "Gently". Alexander's got a depth of tone and sense of poise that's simply wonderful on the set – one that's never staid, but which continues to grow beautifully over the years – using the tenor sax in a sense of freely creative expression at a level that matches that of Hank Mobley, Tubby Hayes, or Sonny Rollins back in the 60s. The group on this set features John Hicks on piano, John Webber on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and Hicks' piano is especially nice, and opens up Alexander's sound with a sensitivity that matches his best recordings with Harold Mabern. One of the best records ever recorded by the Ambiance II Fusion Ensemble – a group led by sax player Daoud Abubakar Balewa – and grooving here in a mix of soul jazz and electric fusion that sounds pretty darn sweet overall! Daoud's got a pinched style to his reed work, creating a tone that's almost sad – even in the more joyful moments of the record – and it blends well with the album's work on electric guitar and keyboards. There's a great jazzy groover on the album with a sweet Jazz Biznezz feel – "Fiesta", a lively Latinized number that has some sweet female vocals. Early work by avant saxophone genius Albert Ayler – and very very striking! The setting is very spare, with only bass and drums backing Ayler up – and the way the album is mixed, Ayler's solos dominate the tracks in a way that isn't always the case with some of the more group-driven later work. His tone is amazing even in this early date of 1962 – and he completely blows away the other two players on the set, drummer Sune Spangberg and bassist Torbjorn Hulcrantz. The set was first recorded by the small Swedish label Bird Notes, and it's the beginning of a longtime love affair that Swedish modernists had with Ayler's tone and playing – a love affair that runs up to the current avant garde that includes Mats Gustafsson. Yet throughout it all, the round, robust sound of Bailey on the harmonica is in the lead – blowing with a strong sense of tone, and an imaginative power that shows how he, like Toots, can really match the energy of a saxophonist in sense of solo and rhythm.
