Posi-Tone SwingtetOne For 25 ... CD
Posi tone, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99 17.98
One of the few large group sessions ever recorded by the Posi-Tone label, but a set that definitely keeps the soulful vibe of the well-respected imprint – as you might guess from the "Swinget" in the group's name! The lineup is a nonet, but moves with the energy of the smaller combos on the label – no surprise, as players include Farnell Newton on trumpet, Michael Dease on trombone, Diego Rivera on tenor, Patrick Cornelius on alto, Lauren Sevian on baritone, Art Hirahara on piano, Theo Hill on piano and Fender Rhodes, Boris Kozlov on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums! The rhythm players are more than enough to keep things moving – and the group soars strongly through a set of original material that allows plenty of room for the very strong individual voices in the lineup – titles that include "Simon", "Major Waltz", "Dry Clean Only", "You Dig", "Avalanche Suspended", "Projection", and "Where With All". ✨✧ S-Tone IncLuz Y Sombra ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2005. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Breezy bossa by Stefano Tirone – aka S-Tone – done in the best style of recent work on the Schema label! Stefano's really grown a lot in his work since his first album – and Luz Y Sombra really delivers on the promise of a host of recent singles, and serves up some beautiful tunes that are as soaring as they are soulful! Most tracks feature lead vocals – sung by Laura Fedele and an assortment of other singers, both male and female – all set to wonderfully skipping rhythms delivered in a mostly acoustic setting. Instrumentation includes percussion, acoustic guitar, piano, vibes, flute, and even some added strings – and throughout the set, Stefano's giving the whole record some very nice Nicola Conte-esque touches on the rhythms. Titles include "Naked Ground", "Dreamer", "Venus", "Verao", "Negro", "Emotional Dancing", "Posto 9", "Beira Do Mar", and "Some Kind Of Blues". CD

Organisation (Kraftwerk)Tone Float (with bonus track) ... CD
Innerspace (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $16.99
A rare early chapter in the career of Kraftwerk – an obscure album issued only in the UK, and one that features the duo of Ralf and Florian augmented by three other players! The sound here is heavily instrumental, and very experimental – almost in the mode of some of the more adventurous German groups of the time, particularly those on Brain – with a blend of jazz-like improvisation and close-in, repetitive instrumental passages – the latter of which certainly bear resemblance to the earliest music of Kraftwerk! The lineup here includes organ – often heavily distorted – plus flute (both electric and acoustic), bass, and a wide range of percussion instruments played with unbridled freedom. Titles include "Tone Float", "Rhythm Salad", "Milk Rock", "Silver Forest", and "Noitasinagro". CD also features a bonus track – "Vor Dem Blauen Bock", recorded for the Beat Club TV show in 1971! CD

✨✧ Jimmy RuffinJimmy Ruffin Sings Top Ten (sepia tone cover) ... LP
SOUL, 1966. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A great full length album from Motown's mighty Jimmy Ruffin – and a set with a lot deeper soul sound than you'd guess from the "top ten" in the title! The music's not commercial, but some of the sharpest Motown soul of the time – the kind of work that made the young Jimmy as important a solo male act to Motown as Marvin Gaye – thanks to a wonderfully crackling, raspy style of singing that makes any tune really stand out strongly. Some of the numbers here are originals associated with Ruffin, and others are 60s hits by others – but completely remade by Jimmy with his wonderful approach – and titles include the classic "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted", plus "I've Passed This Way Before", "Gonna Give Her All The Love I've Got", "World So Wide Nowhere To Hide", "Black Is Black", "Bless You", "How Can I Say I'm Sorry", and "As Long As There Is Love". Rawkus, 1998. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first full-length from Mos Def and Talib Kweli together as Black Star – a benchmark moment in hip hop history, and one of the finest duo vocal hip hip records of the 90s – and one of the best ever on Rawkus! In hindsight, it's all the more rewarding given Talib Kweli's longevity in proud, mic skills centric hip hop and while highs and lows of Mos Def's work as the years rolled along – and it still stands as strong (then) underground hip hop that takes on the ghetto fabulous themes of the day and well beyond. Stand out cuts include "Definition" "Twice Inna Lifetime", "Children's Story" – the Slick Rick classic redone along the lines of Jeru's "One Day" – and "Respiration" featuring Common Sense – and other tracks include "Brown Skin Lady", "Yo Yeah", "Thieves In The Night", "Twice Inna Lifetime and more. 13 in all. Legendarily wordy street hop hero Ghostface Killah is as energized as he's been in years on these tracks, and with producer/composer Adrian Younge delivering top shelf original funky soul, guests as brilliant as Vince Staples and Jack Waterson in the mix, this is pretty much a late period classic for Ghost and most certainly built to stand the test of time. ✨✧ Rob SchneidermanTone Twister ... CD
Hollistic Music Works, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rob Schneiderman's name on a record is always a reason for us to pick it up – as he's not only a tight pianist, who can play with plenty of rhythmic soul – he's also a hell of a leader, and always has a great way of putting a group together! That's definitely the case here, as Rob works with Brian Lynch on trumpet, Ralph Moore on tenor, Gerald Cannon on bass, and Pete Van Nostrand on drums – a group who burn nicely, but without ever overstating themselves at all – just the right balance for the excellent array of original tunes brought by Schneiderman to the set! Some numbers have Rob coming down hard on the left end of the keyboard, others are more lyrical and fluid – and together, the songs round things out beautifully – on titles that include "Footloose Freestyle", "Left Coast Lullaby", "The Lion's Tale", "Tailspin", "Tone Twister", and "Windblown". ✨✧ Brian CharretteGood Tipper ... CD
Posi tone, 2014. New Copy ... $11.99 17.98
Great Hammond work from Brian Charette – served up in a style that's a bit different than most contemporary organ jazz sessions! The tracks here are sometimes short – like the old soul jazz organ singles back in the 60s – and Charette mixes things up nicely with a few great covers of soundtrack and pop moments – a bit like some Jimmy McGriff album on Sue Records! Yet Charette's also got a much wider range of sounds than McGriff ever did – a knowledge of the Hammond that embraces all the changes from Larry Young forward – worked out with a sweet trio that includes either Avi Rothbard or Yotam Silberstein on guitar, and Mark Ferber or Jordan Young on drums. Joe Sucato guests on tenor on the album's one long track – and titles include "The Kicker", "Good Tipper", "Another Quarter", "Standing Still", "You Only Live Twice", "Up Up & Away", and "Time Of The Season". Michael DeaseNever More Here ... CD
Posi tone, 2019. New Copy ... $8.99 15.99
Michael Dease is as great a writer as he is a trombonist – which is to say a heck of a lot – but this time around, he opens the door to a wider range of jazz history – by offering up his own arrangements of tunes by Jimmy Heath, Jackie McClean, JJ Johnson, Eric Alexander, and others who've gone down the path before him! Dease always has a fantastic ear for color and rhythm – and that really comes through here, as he works with a fantastic lineup that features Steve Wilson on reeds, Renee Rosnes on piano, Gerald Cannon on bass, and Lewis Nash on drums – all players that have an equal mastery of color, which really comes through as the album moves on! The Dease approach to phrasing is fantastic – maybe in a space between JJ Johnson and Curtis Fuller during their classic years – and as you might imagine, Rosnes and Wilson are a delight, too. Titles include "Shortcake", "Frenzy", "Lament", "Milestones", "A Harmonic Future", "I Wish I Knew", and "For Hofsa". CD

Posi tone, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
A smoking little set from tenorist Sam Dillon – a musician who's really coming into his own as a leader, after a number of years working in the ensembles of others! Sam's got this nice bite on his reed – which makes for a sharp tone on the numbers here that feature just a quartet, and creates even more fire when Sam adds in a few other horns to the mix – which he does on tracks here that feature extra work from Michael Dease on trombone, Max Darche on trumpet, and Andrew Gould on alto. There's a cascading sense of colors on the numbers with added horns that we really love – but Dillon also balances things out with his own rich voice on the quartet numbers – which feature work from Theo Hill on piano and Fender Rhodes, David Wong on bass, and Anwar Marshall on drums. Titles include "Shift", "Two Part Problem", "Flight Of Mind", "Force Field", "Go For The Jugular", and "Straight Up & Down". CD

Posi tone, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99 17.98
A brilliant record from tenorist Ken Fowser – a player who seems to grab our attention more and more with each new record – both as a soloist and as a rock-solid leader who always brings something special to a session! Ken dedicates this record to the inspiration of pianist Harold Mabern – and you can really feel a lot of Mabern's warmth and soul flowing through the record – as the tunes bristle with the kind of soulful imagination that we always loved in Mabern's music from years back – even though they're all originals by Ken, with piano handled beautifully by Tadatka Unno! This might be the first time we've ever heard Unno on record, but we're already in love – and the rest of the group features Josh Bruneau on trumpet and flugelhorn, Vince Dupont on bass, and Joe Strasser on drums. Titles include "This That & The Other Thing", "Moving Forward", "Three For Leathers", "Morning Light", "Firefly", "The Instigator", and "Without Saying". CD

Posi tone, 2019. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
This might be the first time we've ever heard tenorist Ken Fower with a Hammond organ in the mix – and it makes for a great change that really opens up the colors in his horn! Ken's always had a strong sense of tone, and we love his acoustic records – but this time around, Brian Charette handles the Hammond with a very groovy vibe – one that takes Ken back into 60s soul jazz territory, yet without any copycat cliche modes at all – kind of a sweet blend of Fowser's strong sense of writing and rhythm, just given a nice kick by the organ, which also handles the basslines too. The rest of the group is great as well – with Joe Magnarelli on trumpet, Steve Davis on trombone, Ed Cherry on guitar, and Willie Jones III on some nicely snapping drums. Maybe the first album we've ever seen from guitarist Jocelyn Gould – a hell of a player, and one who fits right in with the strong quality of work we've come to expect from the Posi-Tone label! Jocelyn's got this round, firm tone throughout – balanced with the boldness of pianist Addison Frei – whose work here is equally great, and kind of fills things up around the sides while Gould comes straight down the middle – driven on nicely by the bass of George DeLancey and drums of Quincy Davis – all in modes that really feel a lot different than most other guitar quartet albums, even though these guys aren't trying to do any thing too fancy or gimmicky. The group also features guest horn work along the way – the tenor of Brandon Wright on two tracks, and the trombone of Michael Dease and trumpet of Anthony Stanco on three others – on titles that include the Gould originals "A Fleeting Moment", "Change Of Plans", "Center Of The Universe", "Kindling", "The Game Changer", and "Argyle". Wonderfully romping piano from Theo Hill – a musician who's clearly got some earlier soul jazz inspiration in his style, but who also knows how to warm things up with a bit of lyricism too – in a manner that reminds us of the direction that Cedar Walton took from the 60s into the 70s! Theo has a way of making complex ideas come across with a very natural pulse – and he gets great help here from trio members Yasushi Nakamura on bass and Mark Whitfield on drums – both players who share the same rolling spirit that Theo brings to his piano. Titles include the original track "The Phoenix", plus great takes on "Hey It's Me Your Talking To", "Finger Painting", "Blasphemy", "This Here", "Litha", and "Is That So". CD

Posi tone, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99 17.98
We really love the music of Theo Hill more and more with each new record – and here, the pianist is working in a quartet with Joel Ross on vibe – a player who makes a perfect partner for his music! Both Hill and Ross have this open sense of sound and timing – often using the spaces between the notes as much as the notes themselves – even when things are moving at a more full-on level, which they do often – thanks to contributions from Rashaan Carter on bass and Mark Whitfield on drums! Yet it's the sonic interplay between the vibes and keys that really blow us away – maybe especially at the few points when Theo picks up Fender Rhodes, and balances out the record with even more warmth next to his acoustic tracks. Titles include a version of the Stevie Wonder classic "Superwoman" – plus originals "Guardians Of Light", "Afrofuturism", "Scene Changes", "Mantra", "Swell", and "Song Of The Wind". CD

A really lovely album from pianist Art Hirahara, and a set that maybe draws its title from the careful balance on the record between Art's lyrical approach to the piano, and the overall energy of the group when they really move together! Hirahara continues to develop fantastically as a pianist with each new record – with a touch that's very personal, but always soulfully swinging – and here, the quartet emphasizes those latter modes when they really pick up – thanks to bass from Joe Martin and drums from Rudy Royston – on a record that also features some well-placed tenor contributions from Melissa Aldana, whose sound adds in just the right amount of color. Titles include "Like Water", "Ascent", "Lament For The Fallen", "Mother's Song", "Blessed Son Mr Weston", and "Fulcrum". CD

There's nothing idle about these hands – as the group have a tightness that makes you think they've been together for years – which is maybe partly the case, as many of the artists are part of the great and ever-growing legacy of the Posi-Tone label! And while the company has given us great albums with single artists in the lead over the years, they've maybe been hitting even more strongly of late with groups of this nature – almost an all-leader effort, but in which all players come together with great sympathy for each other – in a lineup that features Will Bernard on guitar, Behn Gillece on vibes, Sam Dillon on tenor sax, Art Hirahara on piano, Boris Kozlov on bass, and Donald Edwards drums. The album's overflowing with fresh, original material – and titles include "Barreling Through", "Silver Bullet", "Maxwell Street", "Ashes", "Sock's House", "Motion", and "Event Horizon " – plus nice takes of Stevie Wonder's "You And I" and Freddie Hubbard's "Theme For Kareem". A tremendous trumpeter, set up here in his best format to date – a really heavy duty quartet that features tenor from Brandon Wright, drums from Rudy Royston, and Hammond from Brian Charette – who blows us away even more than usual with his skills on both the keys and the pedals at the bottom! Royston's drums are always great – and here, he's got this snapping, crackling energy that seems to light a fuse right from the very first note – which Charette fans into full flames of sound, topped by these bold lines and soaring solos from Newton and Wright – two horns that have a really rich power together, before breaking off into really wonderful solos. A fantastic all-star group of players who've recorded separately for the Posi-Tone label – coming together here with a very fresh sound! You'll definitely recognize a few names in the quintet – which features Michael Dease on trombone, Behn Gillece on vibes, Tim Green on alto, Boris Kozlov on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums – and the mix of vibes and trombone in the frontline is really fantastic – maybe no surprise, though, as we've always been huge fans of Gillece – who wrote a good number of tracks on the set – although Kozlov, Royston, and Dease also contribute some numbers. There's a very fresh sense of rhythm on the record too – thanks in part to the work of Kozlov and Royston, and the lack of a piano – and titles include "Day Zero", "Blue Sojourn", "Night Glow", "Rio", "Spun Around", "Grave Concerns", "Two Down", and "Pay The Piper". A fantastic step forward for saxophonist Alexa Tarantino – a set that really shows all her strengths as a soloist, songwriter, and a leader – a record that should have the rest of the world finally taking notice of her talents! Alexa's already a great saxophonist – working here on both soprano and alto, the latter of which she uses especially well, with well-crafted, thoughtful solos that are full of soul – and she also blows a bit of flute and alto flute on the record, really deepening the color palette, and keeping things interesting throughout! The rest of the group is great, too – with Steven Feifke on piano and a bit of Fender Rhodes, Joe Martin on bass, and the great Rudy Royston on drums – all swinging along effortlessly, and with plenty of soul throughout. Doug Webb's a tenorist we're really growing to love and love more with each new record – a player who can come on with a bold, soulful punch at some moments – then carve these fluid lines at others, which he does wonderfully here alongside the organ of Brian Charette and guitar of Ed Cherry! The mix of both instruments is used in a way that's post-soul jazz – creating an open palette of colors, rhythms, and opportunities for new sorts of action – that sense of new discovery that we love so much on the later recordings of Hank Mobley, where familiar elements are reshuffled in a beautiful way – all to further the genius of the leader on tenor! Webb's playing here really lives up to that promise, and gets great help in the frontline from Joe Magnarelli on trumpet. Steve Fidyk plays drums, Charette handles the basslines on the organ – and titles include "Doctor Miles", "The Drive", "Society Al", "Silver Lining", "Lunar", "One For Hank", and "Melody For Margie". With the exception nice, nocturnal reading Jerome Kern's "All The Things You Are", it's all Wolfe originals – led strongly by Wolfe's prominent, but never overbearing bass and brilliant rhythmic interplay with Evans and Edwards, with plenty of room for Dillard to shine. An incredibly well-crafted set of soulful hardbop – the kind of record that the Posi-Tone label seems to do better than just about anyone else these days – and which is so tight, so together, the whole thing almost seems effortless! Yet there's clearly a lot of effort going in here – original songs by some members of the group, and a crack cohesion of all the players, right from the start – an ace lineup that features Alexa Tarantino on saxes and flute, Caili O'Doherty on piano, Tony Davis on guitar, Adi Meyerson on bass, and Joe Strasser on drums! ✨✧ Special AKAIn The Studio ... LP
2 Tone/Chrysalis, 1984. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A big big crossover album from the UK ska scene of the early 80s – built upon the ashes of the older Specials group, but still with plenty of the dark edges we'd come to expect in Jerry Dammers work! There's a bit more electric instrumentation at the bottom of the tracks, but the sound is still relatively in the ska-styled groove of the original Specials work – although sometimes maybe inflected with a more straightforward dancefloor bounce, too – which is what really helped some of these tracks get traction at a larger level beyond the ska scene. Over the years, the record's become as classic as the earlier Specials sets – and really lives up to its classic-styled cover image too! Includes the big tracks "Nelson Mandela" and "Racist Friend" – plus "Break Down The Door", "Alcohol", "War Crimes", "Bright Lights", and "Night On The Tiles". LP, Vinyl record album

The first we've heard as a leader from saxophonist Alexa Tarantino – a great talent who's really been bubbling under on other ensemble records for the Posi-Tone label, and who's very much at the start of a great career of her own! Alexa plays some mighty nice soprano sax on the album – plus tenor and flute – all with this nice sense of edge in her tone, mixed with a more forward-moving flow – this subtle quality that really keeps things interesting, and which has us held surprisingly rapt whenever one of her horns stretches out in a solo. Most tunes are originals, with this fresh sense of timing that really works with her tone – and the rest of the group features Christian Sands on piano, Joe Martin on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums – and a few tracks also feature trombone from Nick Finzer. Fantastic female grooves from the European scene of the 60s – an assortment of upbeat tracks done in styles that run from funky to freakbeat, jerking to jaunty, all with a great sort of mod-styled "shake" in the rhythms! Most of the work here is pop-oriented, but done with a fair bit of a groove – bottom styles borrowed from American soul, British mod, or the funkiest side of easy – topped off with vocals that are often sung in English, even though the singers include a fair bit of Italians and French as well! 20 tracks in all, and a really unique little package – a great introduction to this music, and a pre-sorting that will save you much time digging for these tracks on your own! Posi tone, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A killer guitar and Hammond session with a really sublime sort of sound – a groove that's wonderfully free of cliche – and which has an open, spacious quality that few artists can match! Given the instrumentation, the album's steeped in tradition, but never tries to just rehash an older Prestige Records vibe – and instead guitarist Ed Cherry and organist Kyle Koehler find a way of soaring out in their own spirits – opening up strongly in a bass-less trio that only features the drums of Anwar Marshall to keep things snapping along. The pairing is perfect – on the level of Grant Green with Larry Young, or Pat Martino with Don Patterson – yet very much with its own spirit, too. Cherry's arrangements are great, too – providing very fresh takes on familiar tunes, alongside his own compositions. Titles include "Central Park West", "A New Blue", "Rachel's Step", "Ode To Angela", "Little Sunflower", "Little Girl Big Girl", and "Peace".

The core group is a quartet – with Lawrence blowing beautifully over piano from Zaccai Curtis, bass from Luques Curtis, and drums from Anwar Marshall – and the set also features some great alto from Caleb Curtis on two tracks, balancing out the sound of Josh in this strongly soulful spirit! Brian Charette brings some organ to the album's final track – a great remake of the Earth Wind & Fire tune "That's The Way Of The World" – and all other titles are Lawrence originals, with tunes that include "We're Happiest Together", "Composition #2", "Wind", "Earth", "Sugar Hill Stroll", and "Sunset In Santa Barbara". Twin Tone/Rhino, 1984. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The masterpiece by one of the greatest, most sincere rock bands of all time! Let It Be veers all over the place, or at least as much as jangly rock music can, in the best way possible. Includes the pseudo twangy opener "I Will Dare", with the distinctly midwestern hardcore of the group's earlier years showing up on "We're Coming Out" and "Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out", and Westerberg's great heart-on-sleeve, ragged balladry appearing for the closers. Like the Meat Puppets and X, the 'Mats really found themselves after they shed the rigid rules of punk rock, and developed into something every bit as honest and heartfelt. They followed the rock songbook just enough to keep their work warm and familiar, but with way too huge and hard-pounding heart to ever seem even the least bit derivative. Hell, they even make Kiss's "Black Diamond" sound sincere! Other tracks include "Favorite Thing", "Androgynous", "Unsatisfied", "Seen Your Video", "Gary's Got A Boner", "Sixteen Blue" and "Answering Machine". LP, Vinyl record album

An incredibly well-crafted set of soulful hardbop – the kind of record that the Posi-Tone label seems to do better than just about anyone else these days – and which is so tight, so together, the whole thing almost seems effortless! 2 trumpets, 2 tenors, and a heck of a lot of open-ended blowing session magic! The format for this one's incredibly loose – as might be guessed by the "leaderless" nature of the record – but the session's a great example of the Prestige blowing session mode at its best – as it brings together unlikely groupmates, and really lets them feel each other out in the studio. A fantastic early record from tenor giant Stanley Turrentine – a set that's completely hard-hitting, and which has a very different vibe than the sweeter sets he'd cut later in the 70s! Instead, this record is pure hardbop all the way through – with Turrentine matching labelmate Hank Mobley for depth of tone and freshness of ideas – stretching out on these long, live tracks with a very cool combo that also features Grant Green on guitar and Horace Parlan on piano – both of whom are superb, and hit some real Blue Note heights on the set. Parlan brings this sinister edge to some of the best tunes, and Green's guitar rings out with these fantastically soulful chromes – providing a great balance to the deep runs that Stanley takes on the tenor. Gryphon/Muzak (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $10.99
The trumpet of Franco Ambrosetti meets the orchestrations of Don Sebesky – and the result is a wonderful batch of tracks that take us back to some of Don's best work of the late 60s! Ambrosetti's got a beautifully evocative tone on his horn here – and he's supported by a cast that includes Eddie Daniels on flute and sax, Joe Beck on guitar, and George Gruntz on piano – all given plenty of space by Sebesky to express themselves within the larger group – making for work that's full and rich, yet also relatively personal and intimate too. Titles include the funky groover "Lugano Lady", plus "Johanna", "Sleeping Gypsy", and "Demoiselle". CD

✨✧ Gene AmmonsBoss Tenor (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Prestige, 1960. Used ... $11.99
A soul jazz classic from Gene Ammons – the kind of session that easy made him "boss" on tenor – with a tone and conception that few other players could touch! The set is done in a style that's laidback, but never too loose – bouncing along in that "with conga" style of rhythm that was used strongly at the start of the 60s – with Ray Barretto on percussion, alongside Tommy Flanagan on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. The style is nice and echoey – a mode that works well not only here, but on most of the 22 other albums that Ammons went onto record during the next 2 years! Titles include "Close Your Eyes", "Canadian Sunset", "Hittin' The Jug", "Confirmation", and "Blue Ammons". CD

Prestige, 1964. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Classic mellow Jug – from a time when Prestige discovered that Gene Ammons would sell equally well to the mellow jazz crowd as to the jukebox jumpers. Most of the cuts feature Gene with a deep soulful tone that could qualify as "velvet", but which still has enough of a rough edge to remain soulful. One track is played by a larger group, and the rest are with small combos that either feature organ or piano. Tracks include "Salome's Tune", "Velvet Soul", "Stranger In Town", and "Light N Up". A key later session from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – a record that gained them global exposure through the ECM label, and which has them working in a beautifully subtle sense of sound, space, and tone! The work is less all-out challenging than some of the group's earliest recordings – but no less strong, as if anything, the AEC has mastered their musical vision so well, they're coming across here with an extremely cohesive sound. Instrumentation includes a wide range of percussion, plus the usual bass of Malachi Favors and the saxes of Joseph Jarman and Roscoe Mitchell – and tracks include "Ja", "Folkus 11", "597-59", and "Dreaming Of The Master". "Moments In Love" is that breathy slow stepper, presented here in long and short versions – and "Beat Box" is the hip hop inspired groover that helped these guys win Best New Black Artist from Rolling Stone in 1984, in spite of their non-blackness. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Albert Ayler1964 Prophecy Revisited ... CD
Hat Hut (Switzerland), 1964. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
An expanded, remastered version of the album Prophecy – early work by Albert Ayler, recorded live in 1964 at the Cellar Cafe in New York, but not issued by ESP until years later, after his untimely early death. The performance is a trio outing – with Ayler's tenor alongside the bass of Gary Peacock and drums of Sunny Murray – all freely skirting around each other's space on the date, in a way that allows Ayler to take the bold lead with his sharp-toned solos, but which also allows for free interplay between the bass and percussion. Ayler's tone and wide swaths of sound are simply amazing – and titles include two variations on "Ghosts", plus "Spirits", "Prophecy", and "Wizard". Newly remastered version of the full concert – with 10 tracks in all! CD

Digitmovies (Italy), 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A fantastic Luis Bacalov score for one of the classic films to feature the duo of Bud Spencer and Terence Hill – music that matches the wicked blend of drama and humor that always made their movies so great! The set begins with a great English-language theme – the very catchy "Can Be Done", sung by Rocky Roberts with this raspy vocal that's completely charming – then the music moves into instrumental territory that's awash in the mix of tension and warmth that really could suit a narrative like this so well – with a bit of harmonica from Franco De Gemini, amidst this sweet flow of woodwinds and electric instrumentation, all balanced with a beautiful sense of color and tone. In addition to "Can Be Done", other titles include "Si Puo Fare Amigo", "Guai In Vista", "Amore Nel West", "Buffo Inseguimento", "Festa Al Villaggio", "Valzer Al Saloon", "Il Villaggio All'Alba", and "Pianino Pianino". Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $22.99
A fantastic record from jazz harmonica player Donald Bailey – maybe one of the few we've ever seen with his name in the lead, and a set that shows that he can easily rival some of the greats on his instrument at the time! The vibe of the set is a bit like some of the best jazz dates from Toots Thielemans – mellow accompaniment from a Japanese group that features Hideo Ichikawa on piano, Yoshio Ikeda on bass, and Takaki Nishikawa on drums – plus guest tenor from Hideyuki Kikuchi on two tracks! Yet throughout it all, the round, robust sound of Bailey on the harmonica is in the lead – blowing with a strong sense of tone, and an imaginative power that shows how he, like Toots, can really match the energy of a saxophonist in sense of solo and rhythm. Titles include "Half Nelson", "The Lady Is A Tramp", "Invitation", "So In Love", and "Alone Together". CD

Beggars Banquet (UK), 1981. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $29.99
Classic work from a band with a name that hardly fits their sound at all – not the streamlined music you'd expect from a Bauhaus tag – and instead a fantastically fuzzy, muddy, dark-edged style that set the tone for countless other groups to come! Yet the approach here is all the group's own – still some of the intensity of the punk years, especially in the speed and execution of the songs – and maybe in the production, too – which has all the shadows of Martin Hannett at his best. And despite the way that these guys were taken up so much by goths in later years, they've got a straightforward style that maybe more appealing to fans of Bowie from the decade before – or maybe Bowie filtered through the UK post-punk years, with touches of Siouxsie & The Banshees. Capitol, 2004. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $31.99 35.99
A masterful later album by the Beastie Boys – who always preferred to put out a great record every five or six years, than a sub par album every 2 or 3! All these years after Paul's Boutique, when the world of difficult, expensive sample clearance could've kill the layers of pop pastiche sound bites that made P's B such a brilliant statement, the soul and funk samples are still piled on in abundance on this one (albeit with a more electro studio built backdrop), as are the block rockin' party rhymes – even if the tone is serious and strident in spots. There are no attempts at live funky jazz or punk rock this time – this may be the Beasties' most classifiable hip hop album in decades. Tracks include the great throwback single "Ch-Check It Out", "Right Right Now Now", "3 The Hard Way", "It Takes Time To Build", "Rhyme The Rhyme Well", "Hey F**k You", "Triple Trouble", "Oh Word?", "That's It That's All", "All Lifestyles", "Shazam!", "An Open Letter To NYC" and more. Superb work from pianist Richie Beirach – a set that's dedicated to Bill Evans, and which certainly embraces some of the key numbers in his songbook – but which also has that even more spacious sound that Beirach was bringing to his trio dates in the 70s! Richie's sense of timing and tone are fantastic – doing so much with so little, that Evans would have been pleased – although again, Beirach is hardly borrowing straight from Bill's style. Also fantastic is bassist George Mraz, whose way of inflecting notes and measuring color and mood almost rival the role of Eddie Gomez when playing with Evans – all balanced nicely by the work of Al Foster on drums, who's at his most subtle here. Wonderful work from Anthony Braxton – an album that has him playing straight ahead jazz – but at a time when he was also making some of his most complex recordings of the 70s! The approach here is sublime – as Braxton's reputation has ears already anticipating some far-out playing, but then marvel at his restraint – his care for keeping alto and bass clarinet work inside a straight jazz tradition, yet always hinting at the modern inflections he can bring to his music! Tunes are almost all jazz standards, blown beautifully – with a tone that's crisp, cool, and very inviting – surprisingly soulful, and never cold at all – matched well with the rhythm trio of Tete Montoliu on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Albert Tootie Heath on drums. Quite possibly the best of the solo albums by ex-Cream bassist Jack Bruce – recorded immediately after the breakup of the band, with a great jazz-based lineup that includes John McLaughlin on guitar, Dick Heckstall-Smith on reeds, and Jon Hiseman on drums. The set's totally instrumental – and the choppy reed work of Heckstall-Smith is the strongest asset of the album, as he virtually sets the tone for a whole generation of European funky honkers to come for the next 10 years.
