Hugh Hopper1984 (red vinyl pressing) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
CBS/Culture Factory, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
The first-ever solo album from Hugh Hopper – best known as the bassist for Soft Machine, but an equally creative artist on his own! The album is a bit more experimental, and sometimes more jazz-based, than Hugh's work in the bigger group – a blend of odd acoustic sounds with slight electronic elements – sometimes a bit abstract, sometimes a lot more focused and tuneful! The album's a key underground expression from the bigger UK jazz rock scene of the time – proof that its more adventurous roots were still present in the best players – and Hopper's work here on bass, percussion, and mellophone is augmented by a shifting array of players who include John Marshall on percussion, Gary Windo on tenor sax, Malcolm Griffiths and Nick Evans on trombone, Lol Coxhill on soprano sax, and Pye Hastings on guitar. Titles include "Miniluv", "Minipax 1", "Minitrue", "Miniplenty", "Miniluv Reprise". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sun RaLive In Nickelsdorf 1984 (3CD set) ... CD
Trost (Austria), 1984. Used 3 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
A really wonderful under-discovered performance by Sun Ra & The Arkestra – a complete live set from 1984, presented here with really stunning fidelity! The package is a great antidote to some of the fuzzier Ra live sets on the market – as it's got the care that the Trost label has brought to their reissues of material by Peter Brotzmann and the FMP generation – with sound that's more than sensitive enough to capture some surprisingly great spare piano passages, as well as the full force of the Arkestra when they really get going. Sun Ra is still a tremendous force on the keys at this time – and delivers a lot of solos that are interspersed between larger, more structured songs – played with fire by a lineup that includes John Gilmore on tenor and clarinet, Marshall Allen on alto and flute, James Jackson on bassoon and infinity drum, and Danny Ray Thompson on baritone and flute. Titles include a number of "untitled improvisation" tracks – plus "Big John's Special", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "What's New", "Nuclear War", "East Of The Sun", "Yeah Man", "Mack The Knife", "Day Dream", and "Love In Outer Space". VariousFurther Perspectives & Distortion – An Encyclopedia Of British Experimental & Avant Garde Music 1976 to 1984 (3CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
Noise galore from the British scene of the punk and post-punk years – a fantastic exploration of the deeper sonic riches of the world of records at the time – and one that effortlessly moves between art, academic, and more popular-based recordings! You'll recognize some of these artists from later, straighter work – or from earlier, more progressive sides – and together with the rest, the package presents a beautifully bleak British musical landscape – sounds that maybe provide the breeding ground for the later industrial scene, but without any of its cliches – or which maybe help the earlier art rock generation to find a bit more edge and relevance in the punk generation! As always with Cherry Red, the notes and package are as great as the music – and the set features dozens of tracks by artists who include Robert Wyatt, Test Dept, Robert Rental, Alterations, Art Bears, A Tent, Gavin Bryars, Hula, Nocturnal Emissions, Robert Fripp, Faction, Zos Kia, Eyeless In Gaza, David Cunningham, Clock DVA, Will Sergeant, Swell Maps, Soft Machine, Pop Group, This Heat, Blancmange, Throbbing Gristle, and many more! ✨✧ VariousKing Jammy's Dancehall Part 2 – 1984 to 1991 ... LP
Dub Store (Japan), 1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
King Jammy may have come to the reggae party a bit later than some of his famous predecessors – but the man's ears and studio talents helped provide a great way for the whole scene to move forward strongly – as you'll hear from these crucial productions from the key dancehall hears! Although the bigger version of that style meant chart crossover, and even a bridge to other musical communities – the sound here is nicely stripped-down, and very rootsy – definitely a bit digital in the production, but always with a richness that goes right back to the earlier dubplate years of the 70s. As with all Dub Store titles, the choice of cuts is wonderful, and the presentation is right up there with the best from Soul Jazz and 17 North Parade. Titles include "History" by Dennis Brown, "One Big Ghetto" by Half Pint, "Don't Take Your Gun To Town" by Al Campbell, "Crucial Boy (version)" by Prince Jammy, "Victim Of Babylon (version)" by King Jammy, "Love Light Of Mine" by Horace Andy, "Cry For The Youths" by Wackad, "Dangerous System" by Pad Anthony, "No Drugs" by Tinga Stewart, and "Move On" by Wailing Souls. Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD & DVD ... $36.99
A special look at the small but vibrant scene in Northern Ireland during the early punk years – a scene that was maybe one of the farthest-flung in the United Kingdom, but which also gave the world some pretty intense music at the time! The package is put together in a beautiful book-styled format – and comes packaged with the 1979 documentary of the same title – directed by John T Davis, with a look at key artists in these formative years – including The Undertones, Stiff Little Fingers, Rudi, Victim, Protex, The Outcasts, The Idiots, and The Parasites – a lineup that gives the whole thing a very punk-oriented vibe! The remaining 3CDs in the set are supported by a great booklet of notes – a total of 74 tracks in all, with work by all of the above artists – and more by Midnite Cruiser, Pretty Boy Floyd & The Gems, Duggie Briggs Band, Starjets, Ruefrex, Acme, The Nerves, The Peasants, Strike, Ex Producers, Dogmatic Element, Electro-Motive Force, Katmandu, Big Self, The Moondogs, Rod Vey, Stage B, Clive Culbertson, and others! VariousThird Noise Principle – Formative North American Electronica 1975 to 1984 (4CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 4CD ... Just Sold Out!
A fantastic entry in the Close To The Noise Floor series – one that looks at early American experiments with electronics – but from the DIY generation that was unlocking access to technology that had previously been in the hands of bigger label artists and the academic electronic scene! The work here is a great partner to UK changes in the punk years and beyond – and, no surprise, some of these artists gained greater fame overseas, where their sounds resonated strongly with music from Sheffield, Manchester, Berlin, and other cities on the continent. And if you think you can guess what's coming, then guess again – because there's so much material here, the 4CD set really goes into some deeper, darker corners – and also pulls together work from different areas of the underground that most folks wouldn't normally connect. So while there's familiar names from labels like Ralph or RRR, there's also a lot more surprises – amidst selections by Richard Bone, Data Bank A, Tone Set, Psyche, Patrick Cowley, Mental Anguish, Controlled Bleeding, Psyclones, Lon C Diehl, Suicide, Residents, Chrome, If Bwana, Terry Riley, Geoffrey Landers, Futurisk, Dark Day, K Leimer, Hunting Lodge, Boy Dirt Car, Smersh, Steve Roach, John Bender, Ministry, Move, Nash The Slash, Tuxedomoon, and many others. Comes with a great book-styled package – pages and pages of notes on the music, with lots of images and record covers too! CD

✨✧ PoguesPogues – BBC Sessions 1984 to 1986 ... CD
Rhino, Mid 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic addition to the Pogues recordings of the classic years – material recorded in a variety of settings for BBC Radio broadcasts, all of which really capture the group at their best! There would be occasional BBC tracks as b-sides on initial UK singles over the years, but this set is the first time that the material's been collected together in bulk like this – and it's almost like having an extra album from the generation of Rum Sodomy & The Lash! As with other BBC recordings, the tracks are done live, but with an intimacy that's different than a concert or venue performance (the boys were maybe a bit less drunk too) – and the quality is excellent throughout. The set features 22 tracks in all – One early session for John Peel, plus another Peel session – and more for the David Kid Jensen Show, Phil Kennedy Show, and two more for the Janice Long Show. CD

Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
A massive look at a key moment in British music – that post-punk era when keyboards and electronics came into the mix, but weren't yet used in polished or commercial ways! The groups here really run the gamut – from some who'd later move into more noisy territory, to others who might change things up and go for the charts – almost all captured at their earliest, working for the wealth of tiny indie labels that sprang up in England once the forces of punk knocked down the walls of the major labels! The scope of sounds here is totally great – from moody, moogy analogue numbers – to other tighter electronic songs that burst and crackle with energy – sometimes instrumental, often vocal – and always a cut above. The package is a hardcover book-style one – with page after page of notes and images on the artists in the set – plus 4CDs that feature a total of 80 tracks – with music by The Passage, Thomas Leer, Box Of Toys, Poeme Electronique, Dalek I, Colourbox, The Normal, Alex Fergusson, Eyeless In Gaza, Bodhi Beat Poets, Two, The Fast Set, Play, Goat, Futurerhythm, David Harrow, Fiat Lux, Blue Zoo, Lori & the Chameleons, Tim Blake, Charlie's Brother, The Quarks, Hybrid Kids, Beasts In Cages, Naked Lunch, Edward Ka-Spel, The Mobile, Fad Gadget, Local Boy Makes Good, Chris & Cosey, Pink Industry, Music For Pleasure, and many more! Helen ShapiroFace The Music – The Complete Singles 1967 to 1984 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
Excellent work from Helen Shapiro – a UK singer known for a few big hits in the 60s, but represented here by a much wider scope of work – including a number of tracks that appear here on CD for the first time ever! Like some of the best of her generation, Helen's got that sweet UK female pop approach that's often heavy on influences from American soul, especially Motown – so that she really soars as she belts on the lyrics, over tunes that often have similarly soulful arrangements and really impeccable production! The package brings together both the a-sides and b-sides of singles recorded for a number of different labels – all with the superb Ace Records presentation that includes detailed notes and excellent sound quality – and the focus is mostly on material from the late 60s and early 70s. Titles include "She Needs Company", "Sill Boy", "Today Has Been Cancelled", "Face The Music", "Stop & You Will Become Aware", "Just Another Weekend", "Brickyard Blues", "That's The Reason I Love You", "A Glass Of Wine", "Waiting On The Shores Of Nowhere", "Take Me For A While", "The Way Of The World", and "Touchin Wood". ✨✧ VariousGreg Belson's Divine Disco – American Gospel Disco 1974 to 1984 ... CD
Cultures Of Soul, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
Think disco sounds only hit the dancefloors in the 70s? Think again – because this killer collection brings back a whole host of club-sounding gospel tunes from the time – proving once again that soul and gospel records have always gone hand in hand over the years! The vibe isn't mainstream disco, the kind you'd hear on the charts – and instead is the hipper side of upbeat styles – the funk and well-crafted rhythms used by some of the better indies during the disco generation, and that great run of underground club styles in the early 80s too! The righteous message of most of these tracks makes them pretty darn spiritual – and the whole thing almost feels like a precursor to some of the more uplifting soulful house of the past decade or so. There's loads of surprises here – so many cuts we'd never heard before – and titles include "You" by Gloria Griffin, "Faith Is The Key" by Enlightenment, "One More Chance Lord" by Delores Fuller, "No Greater Love" by The Testimonial Singers, "Give Your Best To The Master" by Shirley Finney, "Trouble Don't Always Last" by Masters Of Music, "Free Spirit" by Betty Griffin, "Jesus Is Going Away" by The Inspirational Souls, "Nowhere To Run" by The Gospelaires Of Dayton Ohio, and "What Kind Of Man Is This" by Enlightenment. Also features a few remixes – "Thank You Jesus (Steve Cobby rmx)" by Gospel Ambassadors, and "Trouble Don't Always Last (Rahaan edit)" by Masters Of Music. CD

VariousPop Makossa – The Invasive Dance Beat Of Cameroon 1976 to 1984 ... CD
Analog Africa (Germany), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
You might know "Soul Makossa" – the worldwide hit by Manu Dibango that was covered by many folks, and sampled heavily in later years too – but this set takes a look at the deeper scene behind that famous groove, through a host of wickedly funky tracks from the late 70s scene in Cameroon! The tracks here are all upbeat, and not afraid to pick up a few influences from disco when they want – but they've also got a more loose, open sort of vibe – a wonderful flow that seems to set the scene for just about anything to happen over the course of the longer songs! Instrumentation and vocals are equally important here – especially the basslines and guitars – and the style of the work starts out in Dibango territory, but soon moves past into a range of very cool modes. As usual with Analogue Africa, the whole thing's way more than just a batch of songs, too – as the notes are huge, and really get at the special feeling of the scene – a world that we've never seen opened up this well. Titles include "More Love" by Pat Ndoye, "Mininga Meyong Mese" by Nkodo Si-Tony, "Ye Medjuie" by Emmanuel Kahe & Jeanette Kemonge, "Pop Makossa Invasion" by Dream Stars, "Nen Lambo" by Bill Loko, "Yaounde Girls" by Mystic Djim & The Spirits, "Nogon Engap" by Olinga Gaston, "Mussoloki" by Bernard Ntone, and "M'Ongele M'Am" by Eko. ✨✧ VariousSpace Funk – Afro Futurist Electro Funk In Space 1976 to 1984 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
Sun Ra was one of the first 20th Century artists to soar off in space, and George Clinton followed his lead with the Mothership in the 70s – and after that time, there was a surprisingly huge legacy of funk and soul artists who also headed for the cosmos – as you'll discover in this very unique set! The package is one of the deepest-digging soul collections we've ever heard from Soul Jazz – as most of the material here is pretty darn obscure – tracks that are from farther in the hinterlands of American soul at the end of the 70s and start of the 80s – and which are heavy on the sort of electrified touches it must have taken to send a funky spaceship out into the stratosphere! Many of these cuts have a sweet electro soul groove, which includes some nice keyboards and even a bit of vocoder work too – while others have a more old school funk approach, but still plenty of cosmic vibes in the mix. Titles include "Supersonic Space Lady" by Ernest Flippin II, "Make It Good To Me Baby" by Copperfield, "Break Out" by Rodney Stepp, "Computer Funk" by Ose, "Fly Guy & The Unemployed" by Ramsey 2C/3D, "Fee Fi Fo Fum" by Leo, "Bionic Funk" by Santiago, "Space Invaders" by Solaris, "Computer Power" by Jamie Jupitor, "Plastic" by Juju & The Space Rangers, and "Computer Games" by Frank Cornelius. Steeplechase/Jazzman (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $14.99
A massive collection of music from the Steeplechase label – spiritual sounds from back in the day, and a side of the label's legacy that's only gotten the right sort of appreciation in more recent years! Steeplechase was a European company, and their biggest claim to fame was recordings of American musicians overseas – especially Dexter Gordon – but the label also had a fantastic ear for more soulful currents on the American underground, and not only managed to capture some less-recorded artists, but also give some bigger names a freer space to express the more spiritual side of their styles! The set is a sublime set of work from the post-Coltrane years – tunes that are modal, soulful, and occasionally slightly funky – served up in a set of completely uplifting music, all supported by the usual excellent Jazzman attention to detail and thorough liner notes. Titles include "The Time Of This World Is At Hand" by Billy Gault, "Tipe Tizwe" by Jim McNeely, "Aida" by Rene McLean, "Dark Warrior" by Khan Jamal, "Naima" by Michael Carvin, "Magwaza" by Johnny Dyani with John Tchicai & Dudu Pukwana, "Ode To St Cecile" by Mary Lou Williams, "Jean Marie" by Sam Jones, "Miss Priss" by Ken McIntyre, and "De I Comahlee Ah" by Jackie McLean & Michael Carvin. Uzelli, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $15.99 17.98
Amazing sounds from the Uzelli label – a collection of tunes that are heavy on the elektro saz, which is pictured on the cover – kind of a hybrid between an electric guitar and more traditional stringed instrument! The saz allowed a huge explosion of the kind of sounds that were first coming into play in Arabesk rock at the start of the 70s – taken even further by recordings like these – which move between folksy rhythms and more mainstream modes, but which always sparkle with these angular fuzzy lines from the lead electric instrument! If you've ever dug any of the psychedelic Turkish recordings in our racks, you'll find plenty to love here – on titles that include "Yaz Dostrum" by Gulcan Opel, "Nar Taneshi" by Mehtap Tuna, "Darildim Darildim" by Akbaba Ikilisi, "Gonul Dagi" by Mehtap Tuna, "Mercanlar" by Sultan Sumbul, "Asrin Bozuk Duzeni" by Asik Emrah, "Sari Yildiz" by Kina Gecesi Ensemble, and "Topal" by Sari Zeki. ✨✧ Michael JacksonFarewell My Summer Love 1984 ... LP
Motown, Early 70s/1984. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very strange little album – one that features material recorded by Michael Jackson for Motown in the early 70s, remixed with new instrumental backings to cash in on his fame in the mid 80s! Given that the work is early, the vocals are great – very much in the best Jackson 5 mode of the time – but the odd thing is the way that the new backings give the tunes all a bit more of a modern touch – by lining up keyboards and a bit of electric percussion next to the warmer older Motown arrangements. The approach oddly isn't bad, and there's a few nicely compelling tunes here – tracks that we certainly love a lot more than the place Michael went a few years after 1984. Titles include "Melodie", "You've Really Got A Hold On Me", "Don't Let It Get You Down", "Girl You're So Together", "Farewell My Summer Love", "Call On Me", and "To Make My Father Proud". A fantastic collection of images from Times Square, pulled from the years before Disney took over – at a time when the action moved 24 hours a day, and at a non-stop pace! Bill Butterworth was right on the streets during the early 80s – and presents stunning full color shots of a range of figures from the Deuce – strippers, short order cooks, merchants, hustlers, b boys, Guardian Angels, and others – often in posed portraits in their environs, but occasionally captured in more candid ways too. Trojan (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. Used 2CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A key style in Jamaican music during the 70s – the mode of the DJ, which often featured a toaster speaking over more familiar tunes – adding spoken bits and new lyrics in the process, in a mode that many claim was a key influence on the birth of hip hop! The relationship between the two forms isn't exactly a straight line – but the approach is somewhat similar – a way sharing enthusiasm about the music and grooves, by adding in new verbal aspects that take things in a whole new direction. And given that toasting tracks were often not as played as straighter vocal numbers, there's plenty here that's new and fresh – a very specific and unusual take on the 70s years of reggae, and one that takes you way past the hits. Titles include "Mava" by Dennis Alcapone, "Monkey Spanner" by Dave & Ansel Collins, "Fire Corner" by King Stitt, "Sunday Dish" by Early B, "We Hot" by Charlie Chaplin, "Tighten Up Skank" by Dillinger, "Blackman's Time" by I Roy, "Buttercup" by Winston Scotland, and "Home Guard" by Mikey Campbell. BBE (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Mindblowing jazz from Japan – a tremendous introduction to the 70s scene in Tokyo if you've never heard this music at all – and a package that also includes a fair bit of rare tracks, even if you're not a newcomer! The Japanese love of American jazz is no secret – and the music was spread widely there by American forces after WWII – but during the 70s, something really special happened, and the scene found a voice that was all its own – exploding with new energy to create sounds that were soulful, spiritual, and powerfully poetic! By the end of the 70s, Japanese fusion would get more global exposure – but most of the tracks here are acoustic, save for Fender Rhodes lines – and feature completely inventive, imaginative sounds – often set to grooves that are modal and spiritual too. A fantastic collection throughout – with tracks that include "Blind Man" by Shintaro Quintet, "White Fire" by Takao Uematsu, "Aya's Samba" by Eiji Nakayama, "Earth Mother" by Koichi Matsukaze, "Dead Letter" by Tohru Aizawa, "Kaze" by Takeo Moriyama, "Long Neal" by Kiyoshi Sugimoto, "Unknown Point" by Mitsuaki Katayama, and "Little Island" by Fumio Karashima. Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Strut (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A really riveting collection of music from a scene that we've hardly heard much from before – upbeat grooves from the island nation of Madagascar, all recorded at the end of the 70s and start of the 80s – but with a vibe that sounds much older overall! The one thing that really stands out in a number of these tracks is the strong use of organ and keyboards – often in this full, swirling sort of style – infusing the grooves next to the more familiar percussion and guitar lines you might hear in other African music from the generation – although even those elements are used in ways that are pretty darn unique! The tracks often have this raw intensity that comes from both the instrumentation and the way things are put together – and the whole package is a really refreshing change from other oft-tread musical territory on the continent. Titles include "Mama" by Roger Georges, "Andosy Mora" by Jean Kelly Et Bastn, "Ngoma Hoe" by Papa James, "Izahay Mpamita" by Mahaleo, "Faraina" by Feon'Ala, "Soaliza" by Terak Anosy Group, "Oa Niny E" by Nino Rafah, "Razana Tsy Ho Meloko" by Michael, "Jazz Sega" by Jeannot Rabeson Et Son Orchestre, "Tokatoka" by Kaiamba Orchestra, "Zaka Tiako Mamolaka Keriko" by Atrefy Andriana, and "Andeha Hanarato" by Los Matadores. A fantastic book on a unique slice of soundtrack culture – the rise of the sci-fi soundtrack in the 60s and 70s, which also matched a real rise in new musical styles too! The book is filled with color images of vintage records, but is also way more than just an artwork book – as the authors have interviews with some key composers – including Stu Phillips and Laurence Rosenthal – and really provide a history of the genre through the 80s, which might have been its biggest decade on vinyl! These guys gave us a great book on horror soundtracks – Blood On Black Wax – and this book may well even top that one. 270 pages, full color, hardcover. Book

Family Groove, 1984. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Never-issued funk from the Hollywood scene of the early 80s – music that definitely echoes some of the bigger-name styles of the time, but which also has a vibe that's much more in an indie spirit overall! At some level, the record's a great illustration of just how different west coast funk of the time was from the east coast modes – especially those coming from New York – and the music here has some of the warmer vocal currents of 70s Cali Soul, mixed with a host of great basslines that really set up the grooves in a nice way – and which get strong support from instrumentation that does a really good job of avoiding some of the tinnier, more electric sounds that were coming into play. We might well guess that Latrell was working on a lower budget, so had to resort to instrumentation from a few years before – which also means that they place a stronger emphasis on the basslines and vocals, which both come across very well. Titles include "Life In The City", "Come On Over", "Visions", "Party Night", "Sign Of The Times", "Get Up & Groove", and "My Little Darlin". LP, Vinyl record album

Cugie's usual sound isn't that much in place, but that's ok, because tracks like "Thunderball", "Hang On Sloopy", "Tabasco", and "Soul Sauce" all groove nicely, and in a good 60's pop Latin vein, with nice solo moments by the band. RSO, 1979. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
A great little set from Leroy Hutson – proof that he was still going strong through all his years at Curtom! The vibe here is a bit different than his first few records, and you might be suspicious with Leroy wearing a disco shirt on the front – but the sound is wonderful, and only shows Hutson blossoming into a more sophisticated singer, songwriter, and producer – one with a great ear for the careful balance needed for the modern soul generation! The shift is a bit like Roy Ayers on his late 70s work for Polydor – and Hutson is definitely on a par with Ayers in our book – we'd always put the two side by side for the strength of their work in the 70s. Seminal tracks include "So Nice" and "Right or Wrong" – both of which are amongst some of his best work ever – and other tracks include "Unforgettable", "Funk In My Life", and "Lonely Without You". The cover looks a bit cheesy – like some sort of Star Search graphic – but the album's a rock-solid gem from the second decade of Nigerian funk – recorded in Lagos with a great boogie vibe, and a groove that's as heavy on keyboards as it is on riffing guitar and percussion! Peter Abdul's got this falsetto style of singing that's quite unusual for the Nigerian scene – one that echoes American sweet soul of the 70s, but set to a groovier style – and backing vocalists often help push over the top to new heights – as he stretches his range over the top of the longer grooves in the set! Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1984. New Copy ... $16.99
An unusual date from tenorist George Adams – recorded right around the same time as his legendary records with Don Pullen, but instead a more unusual partnership with the great trumpeter Hannibal Marvin Peterson! The pairing is great – and both hornmen soar out and really get plenty of room to do their thing – in a mixture of hardbop energy and more spiritual currents, with help from John Scofield on guitar, Ron Burton on piano, Walter Schmocker on bass, and Allen Nelson on drums. The energy is maybe a bit more like some of Peterson's late 70s records than some of the Adams/Pullen material – and that quality makes the live date a nice standout in the catalog of both players. Mango/T-Bird (UK), 1983/1984. New Copy ... $12.99
A pair of groundbreaking records from King Sunny Ade – both of which represent a new wave of interest in African music after the initial burst of the Fela Kuti generation! First up is Synchro System – fantastic work from King Sunny Ade – one of his first truly global releases, and an album that marked a whole new sound in his music! Sunny had been issuing lots of his own records back home in Nigeria – but this set has the juju master working in London, with really fantastic production that pushes his sound in really great ways – echoey waves of basslines and percussion, subtle but powerful vocals, and percolating guitar that takes on a whole new sonic sensibility in the setting! There's a richness to the texture that's amazing – almost as if Brian Eno produced – and titles include "Synchro Feelings Ilako", "Mo Ti Mo", "Penkele", "Maajo", "Synchro System", "E Saiye Re", "Tolongo", "E Wele", and "Synchro Reprise". Next up is Aura – a crucial record in the early days of the global scene in the 80s – a set that lifts the music of King Sunny Ade from its roots in Nigeria, and mixes it up with some fresh elements that really open things up for a world's worth of ears! The approach isn't commercial – at least not in the modes of the later world music years – but there's occasional elements that echo the beat culture rising up in New York and London, mixed with the warmer sounds that were always at Sunny's music – especially that way of making the acoustic percussion and basslines come together in flowing waves of completely sublime sound! All tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Gboromiro", "Oremi", "Ire", "Iro", "Ogunja", and "Ase". CD

An obscure group that we only know from this album, but one who's got some top-shelf production by 70s soul maestro Skip Scarborough, working here in more of an 80s styled blend of beats and keyboards! The style's a fair bit like more mainstream work on labels like Capitol and Atlantic – tight bass pushing most tracks along in a highly rhythmic mode, while keyboards and drum machine bookend the grooves, but allow plenty of space for the vocals! The group get a bit mainstream funky at times, but kick back more nicely at others – letting their softer vocals echo out with a sweeter style than you might expect. Columbia/FTG, 1984. Used ... $9.99
Roy Ayers in a seductive mid 80s mode – his first for Columbia – and a record with some incredibly nice moments that blow away most of his contemporaries! The synth soul and drum machine era might seem like an odd fit for Roy's jazzy vibes, but it actually works really well here! You could argue that few players with a such profound jazz funk pedigree could pull off an 80s modern sound so succussfully – and we'd argue that Roy Ayers is indeed one of the few! If synths and programmed drums aren't your thing, this record is actually more heavily-weighted with laidback jazzy soul, with plenty of vibes and the usual warm sexy vocals from Roy. Includes the funky classic "Poo Poo La La", which has a great little monologue in it – plus "I Can't Help It", "Compadre", "Sexy, Sexy, Sexy", and "Love Is In The Feel". The approach is a bit like some of the more experimental tracks that Joyce recorded over the years, but the album is also a bit more varied too – as Boccia plays keyboards at a few spots, adding just a bit of electricity into this mostly-acoustic affair – on titles that include "Terra E Povo", "Mae Natureza", "Lenda Do Sertao", "Urucungo", "Cancao Para Iracema", "Durma Estrelinha", and "Choro Fantasia". David Bowie at his most sinister for the 70s – a landmark set that combines the harder rocking sound of the Ziggy Stardust years with the more sophisticated theatrics of Aladdin Sane – in a style that features some of the darkest, most political work of Bowie's career! There's a depth to the record that goes way beyond the silly, sensational cover image – and there's also a sonic complexity that's wonderful too – a songs slide into each other with a deftness that never fails to amaze us! The album grew out of a failed project based around George Orwell's famous book 1984 – but the rights to that story were denied by the family – so Bowie went in his own directly, and honestly came up with work that was far better than if he'd done any sort of slavish reading of the novel (Rick Wakeman famously failed in that territory – and the Eurhythmics fared just slightly better.) One of the most beautiful albums ever recorded by saxophone genius Peter Brotzmann – and maybe his first album of ballad material too! As the title implies, the work is Brotzmann's answer to the poetry of Kenneth Patchen – and there's certainly a poetic quality to the way that Peter lays down his improvised performances – at a level that's subtle, sensitive, and which really seems to be opening up the way for a whole new generation of free jazz expression on the European scene – much as the Brotzmann recordings of the late 60s opened a path for the first! Every track features a different reed instrument – and apart from a reading of Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman", all the other tracks are originals by Brotzmann – played on a tenor sax mouthpiece, tarogato, bass clarinet, alto, baritone, e flat clarinet, and tenor. If you don't look beyond the group's name you might come to the conclusion this is some sort of over the top wailing fusion session. But it's more like a second rate imitation of Slave or 80s era EWF over the Sugarhill rhythm section, which isn't surprising since they are using Doug Wimbish and Keith Leblanc as session players. Besides, it's not as though we're trying to damn this album with faint praise, we actually think that's a good way for a mid 80s commercial soul group to sound. 8 tracks in all including "Bust It Out", 'Does Your Mama Know", "Your Red Hot Love", "I Just Feel Like Dancin'", "We're All In The Same Boat" and an instrumental jazz funk cover of the Police's "When The World Is Runnin' Down". CureTop ... CD
Elektra, 1984. Used ... $6.99
The Cure in a pretty unique period, and they have a pretty wild record to show for it! The Top spins in some interesting directions – from keyboard psychedelia, to boisterous pop, to some to trademark Cure mood pieces laced with Middle Eastern and other points global touches – there's no other Cure album like this one! It came just after the psych-steeped side project The Glove and while Robert Smith was also recording as a guitarist with Siouxsie And The Banshees, so there's a lot going on here stylistically – making it one of the weirder Cure albums, and definitely a keeper! Includes the forever great single "The Catapillar" plus "Shake Dog Shake", "Bird Man Girl", "Wailing Wall", "Piggy In The Mirror", "Bananfishbones", "The Top", "The Empty World" and more. CD

✨✧ Miles DavisYou're Under Arrest (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Columbia (Japan), 1984. Used Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Sweeter studio Miles Davis from the 80s – a record that takes the 70s electric experiments and fuses them into a sound that's got a lot more R&B influence than before! The style is a bit poppy at times, but never in a way that's too slick – and often, Davis is using his muted trumpet to state lines boldly in ways that still have a greater sense of depth and craft than most of his contemporaries. A few tracks show some of the gritty New York rock/funk trend of the time, while others are lighter and more lyrical – and titles include covers of "Time After Time" and "Human Nature" – Miles' attempt to find standards in contemporary pop – plus the tracks "Katia", "You're Under Arrest", "Ms Morrisine", and "One Phone Call/Street Scenes". Dibson & EssodyJustice ... LP
Wilfilms/Dig This Way (Italy), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99
Sweet boogie groovers from the early 80s Nigerian scene – heavy on warm vocals from Victor Essody and riffing guitar from Claude Dibson – but also warmed up with plenty of basslines and keyboards too! The sound is pretty spare and tight – electro soul, maybe filtered through a bit of a Nigerian impulse – especially as William Onyeabor acted as remixing engineer on the set, a presence that you can definitely hear in the way that some of the keyboards come across! Tunes are shorter and more focused than any of Onyeabor's work, though – with a great glow on both the groovers and few mellow moments – titles that include "Justice", "Music Makes You Move", "Music Lovers", "My Love Is For You", "Keep On Trying", "No One's Gonna Live Forever", and "Let Your Body Move". Pino DonaggioDon Camillo ... LP
Digitmovies (Italy), 1984. Sealed ... $19.99
A remake of the earlier Don Camillo film from the 50s – done here with music that's got an even more sprightly feel! You might know Pino Donaggio from darker, more serious soundtracks – but here, he uses a mix of keyboards and woodwinds to craft lots of groovy tunes that are in the best spirit of the 80s comedic Italian soundtrack modes! Given that Terence Hill was the lead, we can bet that there's a lot of goofy action on screen – set to tunes that include "Ring The Bells", "Verso Pomponesco", "Sfida A Carte", "I'm A Fool", "Don Camillo Parla Con Il Signore", and "Nella Chiesa". A strong debut of more commercially oriented material from Coke Escovedo's daughter, hooking up with Prince and Jesse Johnson after stints with George Duke and others. The vibe here, as you probably well know, is very Prince influenced, but infused with a wonderful Latin vibe that really set it apart from the rest of his mid 80s camp. ✨✧ FatbackPhoenix ... CD
Cotillion/Wounded Bird, 1984. New Copy ... $6.99 11.99
Fatback flying like the Phoenix – but hardly rising from the ashes, given that the group's always on top! The sound here is a bit different – slightly leaner than before, but in a good way – with lots of core keyboards from Bill Curtis, who also handles most of the lead vocals – although as with most Fatback sets, there's plenty of sharing on that front with the rest of the group members – a bit of harmony here, a switched lead there – all keeping things nice and fresh! And this time around, there almost seems to be more of a focus on the mellower cuts, which we like a lot – because we've always enjoyed the more laidback numbers tucked in amidst the group's funkier sets – so this album's a real treat, with plenty of mellow and midtempo groovers. Titles include "The Drum Song", "Lover Man", "Call Out My Name", "You've Got That Magic", "Big Brother", "Jump Up Baby Jump Up", and "I Love You So". CD

✨✧ Frankie Goes To HollywoodWelcome To the Pleasuredome ... LP
ZTT/Island, 1984. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $28.99 34.99
Arguably one of the greatest concept albums of the 80s – and the only really strong full length album cut by Frankie Goes To Hollywood! At the time of the set, the group was riding high on the success and controversy of their singles "Relax" and "Two Tribes" – but in the ambitious ZTT mode, sought to expand their sound way past familiar hits, and into a realm of sonic exploration that rivaled that of labelmates Art Of Noise. Don't get us wrong, because the Frankie of this album is still very much in groove-oriented territory – but they also let Horn take over with some more striking tunes that are both longer and shorter than the usual pop track – offsetting the vocal numbers on the record with a rich tapestry of musical backdrops that also more firmly forward the group's social and sexual leanings. The album features surprising covers of "War", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", and "Born To Run" – plus the hits "Relax" and "Two Tribes", and the original numbers "Welcome To the Pleasure Dome", "Krisco Kisses", "The Ballad Of 32", "Wish The Lads Were Here", "Black Night White Light", "The Only Star In Heaven", "The Power Of Love", and "Bang". Malaco, 1984. Sealed ... $29.99
Electro 80s grooving from southern funk act Freedom – a record that shows that even the Malaco scene could pick up on bass licks, synth drums, and other production techniques being used heavily up north at the time! However, given the strength of Freedom's overall sound, the album still comes off pretty well on the best tracks – grooving with enough hooks to make for some really catchy tunes. Serge GainsbourgLove On The Beat ... CD
Philips (France), 1984. Used ... $9.99
One of Serge Gainsbourg's biggest international albums – and kind of an 80s update of his earlier erotic sound! There's something of a clubby vibe to the record – and most of the album was recorded in the US, with a fair bit of synthesizer and guitar, in kind of a colder post-new wave groove. Titles include a few great later classics – his remake of "Harley David, Son Of A Bitch", which really broke Serge to a whole new generation of listeners – plus his classic duet with daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg on the great "Lemon Incest" – one of the best songs ever about the virtues of father/daughter love! Other titles include "Sorry Angel", "I'm The Boy", "Kiss Me Hardy", "No Comment", and "Hmm Hmm Hmm". CD

Dizzy GillespieCloser To The Source ... CD
Atlantic (Germany), 1984. Used ... $11.99
A later and lesser-known set from Dizzy Gillespie – and a real departure both from his bop of the 40s and his funk of the 70s! The album's got Dizzy working in a more modern soul-influenced setting – blowing over larger electric-tinged backings arranged by Kenny Kirkland, Marcus Miller, and Barry Eastmond – almost in a format that's a bit like some of Freddie Hubbard's R&B-styled albums of the time. Gillespie's always up for the challenges of any sort of session, and more than holds his own in the format – but the overall credit for the groove is less focused on his solo work, than it is the smoothly soulful style of the backings. The album includes a great cover of Leroy Hutson's "Closer To The Source" – complete with a sweet female lead vocal – plus other jazz versions of R&B material, like "It's Time For Love", "You're Number 1 In My Book", and "Textures".
