John StewartOld Forgotten Altars – The 1960s Demos ... CD
Omnivore, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
Very early work from John Stewart – spare, stripped-down demo recordings done right before his groundbreaking albums on RCA – all served up in that special style that really made John a key bridge between folk and country at the end of the 60s! The music just features Stewart on vocals and guitar – and the earlier numbers maybe have a vocal approach that references some of the folk styles of the time – but as the music progresses, both the style and songs get more original – as all of the material is John's own. A few songs feature duets with Buffy Ford Stewart – and titles include "Lock All The Windows", "One More Chapter Is Gone", "Children Of The Morning", "Draft Age Today", "One Tiny Grain Of Sand", "Big Sur", "Mother Country", "July You're A Woman", and "Down The Highway You Go". VariousDouble Whammy – A 1960s Garage Rock Rave-Up (blue vinyl pressing) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Craft, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $20.99 21.99
A well-chosen batch of rare garage rock gems from the 60s – rare work from labels that include Stax, Fantasy, Original Sound, and Vanguard – including three never-issued tracks! The choice of material is great, and the whole thing features notes from producer Alec Palao – a name we've really come to trust for sets like this, which go way past the hits and obvious choices. Titles include "Can't Get Enough" by The Pullice, "Attention" by Lonnie Duvall, "Harmonica Man" by The Torquays, "Psychotic Reaction (unedited version)" by Count Five, "She's Gone" by Group B, "Double Whammy" by Jack Bedient & The Chessmen, "In The Night" by The Bittersweets, "Short Haired Fathers" by Circus Maximus, "Anytime Anywhere" by The Squires, "This Calls For A Celebration" by The Fantastic Zoo, "Rat Race" by The Tears, "I Can't Make A Friend" by The Vagrants, "The Animal In Me" by The Orfuns, and "The People In Me (full length version)" by The Music Machine. VariousErnest Chahoud Presents Taitu – Soul Fueled Stompers From 1960s/1970s Ethiopia ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $8.99 19.99
A fantastic collection of Ethiopian funk – rare singles from the late 60s and early 70s – all brought together as an amazing illustration of a time when the scene was really on fire! The music here has this incredible resonance between ancient and modern – local and global – as older instrumental modes and singing styles get inflected with drums, basslines, and horn parts that are strongly influenced by American funk and soul – all at a level that makes for one of the most mindblowing mixes of music you'll ever hear! The "stompers" in the title is very well-chosen – as many of these grooves are maybe even more floor-shaking than conventional funk – with a different rhythmic structure than American styles, but an end result that's even more powerful overall. Titles include "Ewnetegna Feker" by Hirut Bekele, "Endiet Zengeshiw" by Selomon Shibeshi, "Alkedashim" by Birkineh Wurga, "Hasabe" by Teshome Meteku, "Mela Mela" by Seifu Hohannes, "Sigibgib Joroye" by Tilahun Gessesse, "Fikrishin Eshaleyu" by Getatchew Kassa, "Alagegnhwatem" by Muluken Melesse, "Ene Yewodedquat" by Tamrat Molla, "Felagote" by Bezunesh Bekele & Bodyguard Band, "Temeles" by Hirut Bekele & Alemayehu Eshete, and "Teleyeshign" by Merawi Yohannis. VariousFunky Blues 1960s to 1970s – Modern/Kent Blues Treasures ... CD
Modern/Kent/P-Vine (Japan), 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... $18.99
The title gets it right – and the grooves do too – nothing but funky blues from the 60s and 70s, the kind of gritty, hard-edged tunes that are way better than the sort of blues you might be used to hearing at frat boy bars! All of the work here was originally issued on west coast indie powerhouse Kent/Modern – and the package does a good job of pulling out some under-recognized gems from the funkier side of their output at the time – tracks that often have some very tight drums, rumbling basslines, and scratchy guitar alongside the more soul-oriented vocals. Titles include "Let Your Hair Down" and "You Make Me Cry" by Arthur K Adams; "Kidney Stew" and "Two Ton Mama" by Newman Family; "Funky Way" by Jimmy Bee; "Women's Liberation" by TV Mama Jean; "What You See Is What You're Gonna Get" by Brenda George; "The Turning Point" by Rudy Ray Moore; "Night Time" and "Go To Train" by Smokey Wilson; "Tramp" by Foxfire; and "Mellow Together", "Funky Broadway", "The Thing", and "Hobo Meeting" by Lowell Fulsom. VariousToujours Chic – More French Girl Singers Of The 1960s (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $22.99 24.99
Incredible female pop from 60s France – not weepy ballads or old school Paris numbers, but the kind of hip-snapping, all-groovy material that made the 60s French scene so great! Loads of these tracks are new to our ears (and we love French grooves a lot!) – and this volume of the series seems to dig even deeper than before – through a range of rare 7" EP material and singles, to come up with some killer tracks that will move way beyond the bigger cuts you might know from Francoise Hardy or Brigitte Bardot. The production and instrumentation is superb throughout – often with these funky currents that make these tracks feel years ahead of their time – and as usual with Ace, the whole presentation is great – from ultra-clear sound through full notes on the music too. Titles include "Rouge Rouge" by Christie Laume, "Pour La Gloire" by Annie Philippe, "Demain" by Zouzou, "Cours Si Tu As Peur" by Fabienne, "A La Fin De La Soiree" by Sheila, "Cette Nuit" by Pussycat, "Angel Of Sin" by Charlotte Walters, "Les Prisons De Sa Majeste" by Delphine, and "Le Nenuphar" by Stone. ✨✧ Emily J LordiMeaning Of Soul – Black Music & Resilience Since The 1960s ... Book
Duke University Press, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful treatise on the lasting power of classic soul music – yet a book that also goes way beyond the simple readings and overdone cliches that are often attached to accounts of the music! Instead, author Emily J Lordi looks at not just the source recordings, but also the evolving theories about their role within black culture, and the larger American story – tracing shifts over time, while still focusing on the core contributions of artists like Aretha Franklin, Donny Hathaway, Isaac Hayes, and Marvin Gaye! The writing is smart, but never too academic – and Lordi does a great job of tying together the strands of her different arguments throughout. 217 pages, softcover. Book

Harry South Big BandHarry South Songbook ... LP
1960s (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $28.99 29.99
An nice array of work from British pianist/bandleader/arranger Harry South – one of the most important large group talents of the late 50s, and an artist who helped shepherd British jazz through a range of stylistic periods – from straight big band of the postwar years, to mod moments in the 60s, to even some sound library-styled work near the end of this set! The range of musicians who worked with South on these tracks is incredible – almost a who's who of British jazz – as the set features work from some of the top talents of the scene at the time – either as leaders, or as sidemen on some of the dates. Titles include "Orient Line" by Tubby Hayes, "Liggin" by Joe Harriott, Slidin" by Ronnie Ross, "Minor Incident" by Dick Morrissey, and "Signing Out", "Raga (edit)", "Storm Warning", and "The Goblin" by Harry South himself. ✨✧ Ronnie Scott with Stan Tracey & Mark MurphyBBC Jazz Club 1964 to 1966 ... CD
1960s (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Really wonderful music from British tenorist Ronnie Scott – working here in the very familiar setting of the BBC Jazz Club, one that's almost as comfortable for Scott as his own nite spot in Soho! The set presents three different performances recorded for radio – all with the great Stan Tracey on piano – working here at his Monkish best, which brings out a much more modern quality in Ronnie than you might expect if you only know his recordings from the late 50s! Vocalist Mark Murphy also appears on two tracks – again with a quality that is quite advanced, as his work on the UK scene in the 60s really helped Mark pave the way for the vocal advances he'd express in the 70s back in the US. Murphy sings on "Waltz For Debby" and "Music That Makes Me Dance/When She Makes Music" – and other titles include "Sweet Lotus Blossom", "Sweet & Lovely", "Close Your Eyes", "What's New", "The Night Is Young", and "I'll Be Seeing You". Jorge AntunesMusica Eletronica ... LP
ES Mangione (Brazil), 1960s. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Some of the most important electro-acoustic music to come from the Brazilian scene in the 60s – recordings that are every bit as powerful as similar experiments from Europe at the time, particularly the revolutionary talents working in Paris! Jorge Antunes takes a big page from their book, and works with lots of electronic wave patterns, tape loops, and other effects – to create these sounds that often begin in more familiar postwar patterns from the academic world, but often move into much noisier territory – really pointing the way forward for the European underground of the post-punk generation. Works include "Valsa Sideral", "Contrapunctus Contra Contrapunctus", "Auto Retrato Sobre Paisaje Porteno", "Cinta Cita", and "Historia De Una Pueblo Por Nacer". LP, Vinyl record album

Official Beatles Fan Club (UK), 1960s. Near Mint- 7 x 7" Set ... $299.99
Limited binder-style set featuring picture disc pressings of some of the coolest music The Beatles ever recorded – a series of sides from special 7" singles that were originally sent only to members of their 60s fan club – and never saw commercial release at the time! Given that the music here documents a year-by-year visit with the group, the approach is one that definitely shows their transformation over a few short years – from the witty, quippy Fab Four of the first few years, to the more intellectual lads of the mid 60s, to the way-out cats of the final years – a time when the Christmas singles turned more into sonic experiments, with maybe a bit of Monty Python humor in the mix! There's definitely some music here, but it's second to the presence of the group – saying "hi", telling jokes, and showing a side of themselves you're not likely to otherwise hear on record. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Booker T & The MGs/The Mar KeysStax Instrumentals – Previously Unissued Tracks ... CD
Stax, 1960s. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
25 rare tracks from the Memphis scene – 60s instrumentals by The Mar-Keys and Booker T & the MGs that have never been issued before! The Stax label is well known as the home to a wealth of famous soul singers – including Rufus Thomas, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Isaac Hayes, and many many more – but perhaps the greatest contribution the label ever made was its contribution to soul record instrumentation. The label was fortunate to have 2 great house bands – Booker T & The MGs and the Mar-Keys – both of whom had a stripped down soulful approach that helped take the raw R&B groove of the 50s, and filter it into the more sophisticated soul sound of the 60s. And while both of the groups released plenty of albums and singles under their own name for Stax, they also spent so much time in the studios that they left behind a wealth of great unissued material – some of it even better than their official releases, due to the laidback and relaxed nature of the sessions. This great CD brings together over two dozen tracks by the two groups – none of which have been issued before, all of which are packaged here with great sound and notes that finally do the material justice. Titles by Booker T & The MGs include "Weird Stomp", "Slidin", "Good Groove", "Let's Go", "Consumption", "The Bo Vitch", "Three Leaf Clover", "Lawn Party", "Ain't It", and "Funky Folks Cha Cha". Titles by the Mar-Keys include "Peppy", "Gigglin", "Raw Hide", "Tighten Up", "Saucy", "Sassy", "The Floyd", "Settle Down", and "Blue Peanut". CD

Wand/Kent (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Maxine Brown on Wand Records is really something amazing – not just because she began her recording career at the label, but also because she never again hit the heights of these recordings! Brown was a really important singer with these sides – still partly in the class and poise of some of the jazz-tinged vocalists that came before her – but also able to open up with a deeper soul vibe that paved the way for Aretha Franklin and so many other singers to come in the second half of the 60s! The production and presentation of these tracks is wonderful, too – great songwriting, and top-shelf studio charts that only lift, and never drown the brilliance of Maxine's unique voice. Titles include "One In A Million", "It's Torture", "Let Me Give You My Lovin", "Yesterday's Kisses", "Oh No, Not My Baby", "Gotta Find A Way", "Baby Cakes", "Why Did I Choose You", "Misty Morning Eyes", "Since I Found You", "Losing My Touch", "If I Had Known", "It's Gonna Be Alright", and the completely fantastic "If You Gotta Make A Fool Of Somebody". Sunnyside, Late 50s/1960s. New Copy 6CD ... $44.99 49.98
A massive tribute to this overlooked west coast pianist of the postwar years – an overstuffed set that features unreleased recordings, rare albums, and lots of other unusual material from the archives of the great Joe Castro! The set follows on the very illuminating Lush Life package from Sunnyside a few years back – and like that box, this one showcases just how many things Joe had going on at the time – even if he only got a chance to issued a rare few records as a leader! CD1 features a series of mid 50s trio recordings done in LA – with work from Paul Chambers, Leroy Vinnegar, and Red Mitchell on bass – plus Philly Joe Jones, Lawrence Marable, and Jimmy Pratt on drums. CD2 isn't Joe at all – but features his own recordings of a very young Paul Bley on piano (1956!), plus singer Flo Handy with backings from pianist George Handy. CD3 returns to the Castro catalog – and offers up the Atlantic album Mood Jazz, with arrangements from Neal Hefti and Ray Ellis – plus six more bonus tracks too. CD4 features another Atlantic album – the great Groove Funk Soul – again with unissued bonus tracks. CD5 features rare trio material, done for Joe's tiny Clover Records imprint – an unusual group with Teddy Kotick on bass and Paul Motian on drums – recorded in New York in 1965. CD6 features even more unusual material from the Clover vaults – a few more with the same trio - plus performances from Teddy Edwards and Bill Holman on tenor, Gabe Balthazar on flute and alto, Al Porcino on trumpet, and Bill Hood on baritone – plus orchestrations, tenor, and oboe from Bob Cooper. As with the previous box, the set is a stunning picture of this overlooked piano genius – filled with treasures in many different flavors! CD

Claudine originally hails from Georgia, but the work here is much more in Detroit, Chicago, or New York styles of the time – nicely moving numbers with a Motor City blend of tight instrumentation and bold lead vocals – sometimes a bit sweet, but always with enough power to keep up with the grooves in the tunes! The package does a great job of bringing together work from Claudine's varied recording career in the 60s – material done for labels that include Chancellor, Jamie, Fayette, Swan, Herald, and Match – under Clark's name, and the names of Joy Dawn and Sherry Pye as well. CD features full notes on Claudine's music and recording history at the time – plus 24 tracks that include "Party Lights (alt take)", "Gimme A Break", "A Sometimes Thing", "Easy To Love", "The Strength To Be Strong", "The Telephone Game", "Goodbye Mama", "Hang It Up", "Standing On Tip Toe", "Moon Madness", "My Turn To Laugh", "Who Will You Hurt", "Angel Of Happiness", "What Kind Of Party", and "Teenage Blues". Norton, Late 50s/1960s. New Copy Gatefold ... $13.99
We love Kim Fowley, and can never get enough of his genius – and no matter what the setting, Fowley always seems to move around the maddest corners of rock and pop music! This raw batch of gems is all pulled from the Fowley vaults – and features a host of indie singles recorded in LA between his bigger bursts of fame – some with Kim in the lead, lots more with lesser-known talents all given Fowley's forceful treatment in the studio – a push forward that makes just about every track here sparkle like some long-lost garage rocker or weird novelty number. Norton provides very detailed notes that are as much a musical journey as the cuts themselves – and titles include "The Knight In Shining Armor" by Knights Of The Round Table, "Kalani Honey" by John Paul Jones, "Young & Wild" by Renegade Five, "Big Bad Wolf" by Kim Garry & The Rhythm Kings, "Watch Your Step" by Larry Green & The Rhythmaires, "Goin Away Baby" and "Golden Apples Of The Sun" by Grains Of Sand, "Wanted Dead Or Alive" by The Rogues, "Moses" by Navarros, and "The Trip", "Astrology", and a rare radio spot all by Kim Fowley. Serge GainsbourgEn Studio Avec Serge Gainsbourg (3CD set) ... CD
Universal (France), Late 50s/1960s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
A treasure trove of rare work from the legendary Serge Gainsbourg – studio outtakes, alternate versions, and lots of other material that stands as a great addition to the catalog of one of the coolest, grooviest French language singers ever! This 3CD set is overflowing with gems – and CD1 brings together rare tracks by Serge himself – some from 45 or LP projects, but presented here in different modes that stand as a wonderful complement to some of the versions you might know – almost like a "part 2" or extended take in some cases. Titles include "Black Trombone (avec intro)", "L'Homme A Tete De Chou (instrumental)", "Sea Sex & Sun (extrait des prises voix", "Chez Les Yeye (prise complete)", "L'Eau A La Bouche (avec intro)", "69 Annee Erotique (instrumental)", and two very long tracks – "Melody (prise complete)" and "Lola Roastaquoouere (instrumental)". CD2 features various interpretations of Serge's songs – many of which were produced by Serge himself, and a few of which even feature vocals by Gainsbourg! The music spans the space of his early Latin and jazzy work, through his slinky sexy 60s and 70s years, to his final burst of great music in the early 80s. Titles include "J'Ai Deja Donne" by Jacques Dutronc, "Les P'Tits Papiers" by Regine, "Les Papillons Noirs" by Michele Arnaud, "Mambo Miam Miam" by Los Goragueros, "Le Sixieme Sens" by Juliette Greco, "L'Oiseau De Paradis" by Zizi Jeanmarie, "Les Petits Boudins" by Dominique Walter, "Le Mal Interieur" by Isabelle Adjani, "Plus Dous Avec Moi" by Charlotte Gainsbourg, and "Le Drapeau Noir" by Mirelle Darc. CD3 features great music that Serge Gainsbourg did for a variety of cinematic projects – music that's every bit as groovy as his own vocal tunes, and which often appear here in instrumental takes that let you focus even more strongly on his great sense of a funky bit and a groove! Titles include "Milena (instrumental)", "L'Eau A La Bouche (avec intro)", "Requiem Pour Un Con (instrumental)", "First Class Ticket (prise alternative)", "Les Chemins De Katmandou (generique)", "Le Village A L'Aube", "Discophoteque (rough mix)", and "Le Physique Et La Figure (version complete)", plus Anna Karina singing "Roller Girl". In our humble opinion, just about every track that Marvin recorded for Motown is "great" – but since this set's focused on the hits, we're happy to accept their track selection, and admit they do a pretty good job of covering most of the big bases – early solo gems, duet classics, and some of the sublime 70s numbers that really made Marvin's music sparkle! Titles include "What's Going On", "Inner City Blues", "Trouble Man", "Let's Get It On", "Distant Lover", "Got To Give It Up", "Heard It Through The Grapevine", "That's The Way Love is", and "If I Could Build My Whole World Around You". Some of the grooviest tunes from the Peanuts cartoons – key character themes penned and played by the legendary Vince Guaraldi, in a set of recordings that features both acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes! A few cuts get really funky, too – the electric numbers, which remind us that back when we were wee ones, watching these cartoons, Guaraldi was already shaping our consciousness with his great way with a groove. The package is one that really gets right to the heart of Guaraldi's genius – and shakes free of some of the holiday spirit of other Peanuts jazz packages, to get into some incredibly groovy numbers that include "Peppermint Patty", "Joe Cool", "Charlie's Blues (variation)", "Blue Charlie Brown (version 2)", "Frieda (alternate)", "Little Birdie", and "Schroeder (alternate)" – plus the famous "Linus & Lucy". Sunset Blvd, Late 50s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99 28.99
The biggest collection of work we've ever seen from early southern soul star Wilbert Harrison – a set that goes way past the early hits that usually make up his tiny greatest hits features on the market – to include a whopping 70 titles that takes the Harrison journey all the way through the 60s, up to his rare mid 70s album for the Chelsea Records label! Throughout the set, Harrison's a hell of a singer – a talent who helped first forge the sound of southern soul with his R&B work of the late 50s, then moved into a strong later collaboration with New Orleans production legends Marshall Sehorn and Allen Toussaint – who really helped Wilbert hone his groove! We've honestly not seen much of this material on CD over the years – and the set's overflowing with rare cuts that include "Girls On Parade", "Drafted", "Say It Again", "Broke", "Off To Work Again", "After Graduation", "Get It While You Can", "Sugar Lump", "The Horse", "A Woman Is Trouble", "Your Three Letters", "It's Been A Long Time", "From The Bottom Of My Heart", "My Dream", "Coming Down With Love", "Loving Operator", "I Will Never Trust Another Woman", "Going To The River", "Honest I Do", and lots lots more! Sunset Blvd, Late 50s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $23.99 24.99
Roy's head looks a bit square on the cover, but he was one of the coolest cats on the Texas scene of the 60s – a rocker with a nicely raw sound, and a fair bit of influence from soul in his music! At some level, Head is a bit like contemporary Doug Sahm – another hard-burning Texas talent who was always able to come on strong, and pick up just the right sort of influences – although in Roy's case, those influences came more from soul than other styles – maybe no surprise, given that his music was issued on labels that include TNT, Scepter, and Duke/Peacock! This set brings together lots of early singles from Roy on CD1 – and CD2 features some even cooler work from the early 70s – the full titles from his Dunhill album, and other material that has him really belting out in a southern showband sort of mode. Titles include "Get Back", "Walking All Day", "One More Time", "How Do You Think I Can Live With Somebody", "Don't Want To Make It Too Funky", "Trying To Reach My Goal", "Same People", "Slip Away", "Bring It To Jerome", "Get Out Of My Life Woman", "Boogie Down Sunset", "Just A Little Bit", "Convicted", "Woe Woe", "Linda Lu", "Your Turn To Cry", "The Feeling's Gone", "Soul Train", and "I Can't Stand It".
