Islam Chipsy & EekKahraman ... LP
100 Copies (Egypt), 2019. New Copy ... $22.99
A really cool concept for a record – one that's unlike anything else we've ever heard, both in its sound and instrumental presentation! The group features two drummers behind the keyboard lines of Islam Chipsy – drums playing together at a pace that's very quick and almost skittish, but held together tightly with a very rhythmic vibe – so that the grooves pulse out fast and intensely, while Chipsy serves up these keyboard lines that move at a slower pace, and which often have slight currents that reflect the Egyptian location of the recording! The whole thing almost feels as if the aliens who built the pyramids came back in the 21st Century – and decided to win back the Cairo scene with their new keyboard and drum-driven grooves. Titles include "El Zantor", "Fast Track", "Zardana", "Saba Zamzam", and "El Daynasour". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ AmabanoAmsterdam Ticket (with bonus download) ... LP
Afro 7 (Finland), 1987. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Fantastic grooves from Amabano – an obscure group from Burundi, on a record that was initially only issued in the Soviet Union! That strange lack of exposure is no reflection on the music at all, though – as these guys are wickedly funky, and play with the sharpness and rawness of some of the best West African funk combos from the mid 70s, and not the smoother, more well-produced elements of the world music scene of the late 80s! Percussion is quite strong on most numbers, as are the ringing tones of the guitar – and while a few tracks have female vocals in the lead, others have an especially strong instrumental groove. Our two favorites are "Ilunga Diamond's Touch" and "Amsterdam Ticket" – both of which we'd put up next to better known Nigerian funk classics – and other tracks include "Munzanire", "Ewe Burundi", and "Nter'amajane". Claude BollingBorsalino/Borsalino & Co (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Music Box (France), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $26.99
Some of the most famous 70s soundtrack work of French jazz musician Claude Bolling – served up here in a double-length CD that's overflowing with bonus material too! First up is the original score for Borsalino – a really lovely little soundtrack for the French film that starred Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo as gangsters in the roaring 20s – set to backings by pianist Claude Bolling that's balanced nicely between the styles of his trad jazz work on record, and some of the warmer thematic modes of the French soundtrack theme at the time! Bolling's piano is always very heavy in the mix – sometimes played with the rhythmic quality of a boogie woogie musician, sometimes more spaciously soundtracked – and augmented by just the right touches of strings. The record was a big Euro hit in the 70s, and still holds up well – and this version features 36 tracks from the film – far more than the original album! Borsalino & Co is the sequel – and features a score that takes off nicely from the first – still echoes of Bolling's piano on many tracks, but also fuller, more dramatic orchestrations at times – and maybe a wider range of jazz instrumentation too. CD features 15 tracks from Borsalino & Co – plus 6 more bonus tracks that include vocal songs by Michele Bach and Le Gang, a big band version of the theme, and a "Borsalino Medley" too. CD

Stax/Real Gone, Mid 60s. New Copy 2LP ... $38.99 39.99
A treasure trove of tight, organ-driven grooves from Booker T & The MGs – a quartet who really helped transform the sound of soul music in the 60s – even if they never sang on any of their records! The combo instrumental record had existed before Booker and the group, but working at Stax Records during the glory days of the Memphis soul scene, The MGs were able to come up with a whole new approach – tight, focused, and very sharp – not entirely funky, but not far off either – usually just with a scratchy guitar line to tighten up the rhythm, and Booker's fantastic lines on the organ to set up the tune! The group recorded a number of classic albums for Stax, but they maybe shone most on their singles – especially the b-sides, which were where they really had fun. (And trivia – "Green Onions", their biggest hit, was originally a b-side!) The set features the first run of their Stax singles – 29 tracks in all, with lots of unusual instrumentals next to the hits – titles that include "My Sweet Potato", "Booker Loo", "Aw Mercy", "Home Grown", "Big Train", "Chinese Checkers", "MG Party", "Soul Dressing", "Tic Tac Toe", "Mo Onions", "Behave Yourself", "Slim Jenkins Place", "Winter Wonderland", "Hip Hug Her", "Red Beans & Rice", "Can't Be Still", "Terrible Thing", "Outrage", "Boot Leg", "Fannie Mae", "Summertime", "Winter Snow", and of course, "Green Onions". Georges DelerueLe Dernier Metro/La Femme D'a Cote/Vivement Dimanche ... CD
EMI/Music Box (France), 1980/1982/1983. New Copy 2CD ... $24.99
A trio of soundtracks from Georges Delerue – each with a slightly different vibe! First up is the famous Le Dernier Metro – a beautifully rich score from the great Georges Delerue – the kind of music that he virtually invented for French cinema in the 70s – balanced with this way of using full orchestrations, yet never sounding too overblown – a sense of spaciousness that's maybe inherited a bit from Morricone and the Italians, but also used with the kind of warmer, more sentimental touches that we love in French cinema! Next is La Femma D'A Cote – warmly wonderful sounds from the great Georges Delerue – one of the few composers who can make music that's sentimental, but all without ever sounding too soppy – thanks to careful use of woodwinds in space, and an ear for some nice dark currents underneath the surface! The music has a really special sort of balance – the kind that few of Delerue's contemporaries could pull off this well! Vivement Dimanche is a masterpiece of melody and drama – served up here in a nicely extended set of tracks that runs the full scope of the score for the film – numbers that are often relatively sort, but pack a hell of a moody punch in the process. 2CD set features 55 tracks in all – plus notes in English and French. Mike Gibbs with John ScofieldMike Gibbs Band At Symphony Hall – Birmingham 1991 ... CD
Dusk Fire (UK), 1991. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A really unusual meeting of the minds – as legendary guitarist John Scofield works here with the famous British big band of Mike Gibbs – an ensemble that had been making waves for decades by the time of this recording! Gibbs was always one of the most colorful of the modern British talents at the end of the 60s – a trombonist, composer, and arranger who was always strongly aware of tone – especially the unusual moments that could arise when putting key talents together in his always-modern ensemble! The lineup here lives up to that legacy – as it also features Kenny Wheeler on trumpet, Tony Coe on tenor, John Taylor on piano, Chris Pyne on trombone, and Steve Swallow on bass – all players whose early work helped transform the UK scene, and who still sound great at the start of the 90s. The album's a double-length set – and titles include "Meant To Be", "Lost In Space", "Pretty Out", "Blueprint", "Science & Religion", "Fat Lip", "World Without", "Out Of The Question", and "Don't Overdo It". MajeksGreen Leaves (180 gram pressing) ... LP
NCF/Superfly (France), 1989. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
Sheila and Desmond Majek work here with support from the Nigeria Conservation Foundation – whose message really comes across in the album's earth-minded grooves! The rhythms are a blend of 80s soul modes, with maybe a bit of a Caribbean vibe at times too – and the spirit of the vocals makes for a very different record than the usual electro-styled sets of the period – a deeper spiritual message that's a mighty fresh change from familiar loved-up lyrics! The album's got a strong Afro Funk number titled "Korup Forest In Africa", Des breaks out with a rap on "Isn't It Time We Started Healing", and other titles include "Let Us Plant A Tree Today", "Mother Nature", "Feeling Good", and "Green Leaves". Trojan/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.98
If there's anyone who could make the idea of Italian westerns and Jamaican grooves come together, it's the young Lee Scratch Perry – the mad musician who always had a great talent for mixing it up! Eastwood Rides Again follows the theme of The Upsetters previous classic, Return Of Django – and like that one, the groove isn't just the rocksteady rhythms you'd expect – but also maybe this more spacious version of the style, with a bit more space between the notes than some of their Kingston contemporaries – almost a mode that could be inspired by the spacious soundtrack scoring of the Italian scene, then delivered with a much grittier vibe. Most tunes are instrumentals, and titles include "Eastwood Rides Again", "Salt & Pepper", "Red Hot", "Tight Spot", "Catch This", "Popcorn", and "You Are Adorable". LP, Vinyl record album

Steve ReidNova (with bonus download) ... LP
Mustevic Sound/Soul Jazz (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
An underground soul jazz classic – massive grooves from drummer Steve Reid, and exactly the kind of set that's gotten him so much attention in recent years! There's a mixture of freedom and tightness here that's really wonderful – some of the looser elements of the loft jazz generation, mixed with an inherent sense of rhythm that always set Reid's records apart from the rest – a groove that comes not just from his own pulsations on the drum kit, but also from the elliptical basslines of Richard Williams on electric and Luis Angel Falcon on acoustic, and the mixed organ and piano lines of keyboardist Les Walker. Joe Rigby brings some really sharp-edged sax work to the record, alongside the trumpet of Ahmed Abdullah, who really sounds wonderful here – bringing a spirituality to the album that's clearly borrowed from his time with Sun Ra. The album includes the great groover "Lions of Judah" – which has a very Ra-like quality – plus other great cuts "Long Time Black", "Sixth House", "Nova", and "Free Spirits Unknown". Mississippi, Mid 50s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautiful sounds from Tanzanian guitarist Frank Humplick – who plays here alongside vocal harmonies from his two sisters – in a mode that's almost like a East African cross between The Carter Family and Andy & The Bey Sisters! The vibe is different, of course – as the raw guitar lines dominate the sound more strongly, and are offset by the warmer harmonies of the sisters – while Frank sometimes delivers a lead vocal with a style that's a bit more rough around the edges, but no less charming! The package is a great overview of these vintage sounds, in the best Mississippi style – and titles include "Shida", "Tuwe Sawa", "Beba Jive", "Nakusalimu", "Kafo Mshiki", "Mwanangu Lala", and "Sharu Shechisia". ✨✧ Muriel GrossmannReverence (180 gram pressing) ... LP
RR Gems (Estonia), 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tremendous sounds from Muriel Grossmann – a saxophonist who's fast becoming one of our favorite on the planet! As with Muriel's previous records, there's a strongly spiritual vibe going on here – but there's also a difference, too – as the group's expanded to a quintet, with the addition of the organ of Llorenc Barcelo next to the familiar trio of Radomir Milokovic on guitar, Gina Schwarz on bass, and Uros Stamenkovic on drums! The rhythms of the combo are every bit as wonderful as Muriel's soaring, searching solos – very modal, but also with deeper rootsy currents too – often mixed with sounds from the organ that are unlike anything you'd hear in a more conventional Hammond setting, which further creates this exotic, otherworldly vibe to the whole record. Grossmann blows soprano, alto, and tenor – and all titles are originals, and include "Chase", "Tribu", "Okan Ti Aye", "Morning", "Afrika Mahala", and "Water Bowl". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Space LadySpace Lady's Greatest Hits ... LP
Mississippi, Early 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Really wonderful sounds from the enigmatic Space Lady – an artist who mostly performed on the streets of Boston and San Francisco in the 70s, but who also managed to make the handful of recordings featured in this set! The tunes are wonderfully spare, and surprisingly beautiful – often just Casio keyboards with bits of electronic processing, which is also extended to the vocals as well – which links the keys and lyrics in this spacey style that's completely sublime! At some level, Space Lady feels a bit like a street corner version of Laurie Anderson (who herself played many corners in the early years) – but there's also a more tuneful and naive approach to the music as well, which gives the whole thing a really unique approach. A fantastic early album from jazz harpist Dorothy Ashby! Ashby's a unique talent like no other – and despite the fact that she plays a rather sleepy instrument, the harp, she swings with an other-worldly quality that's simply amazing, quite exotic, and very much in the camp of players like Yusef Lateef or Les Jazz Modes, who were trying similar experiments in jazz. This session features Dorothy in a quartet with the flute of Frank Wess, the bass of Herman Wright, and the drums of Roy Haynes, whose warm lyrical touches provide the perfect melodicism for the group. Whoa. . .a seasonal treasure from the 70s Ghanaian funky soul scene! This incredible 45 from Academy digs up an uber-rare Afro Soul Christmas 7-inch – featuring early productions by Kwadwo Donkoh and lead vocals by Pee Pee Dynamite on "Groovy Christmas & New Years" and BB Boogaloo on "Soul Of Christmas" – both tracks played by a group led by El Gran Koffie. "Groovy Christmas & New Years" is the powerhouse number – with riveting drums & percussion, a thick layer of organ and tight bass groove – with feverishly soulful, JB inspired vocals out front. An absolute stunner! "Soul Of Christmas" slows things down a bit, but it's ultimately nearly as strong as the other side – with organ and hand percussion leading the instrumentation and with some gruff, but sweet soul vocals. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Very early work from Carl Perkins – so early, in fact, that these tracks not only predate his important rockabilly classics at Sun Records, they also predate the rise of Elvis Presley as well! The music is raw and rocking right from the start, and the emergence of these sides may well have Perkins get credit for being one of the true originators of a sound that so many others would copy – and in one of the key examples, the set features a version of "Good Rockin Tonight" that was recorded a few years before Elvis touched the track! The rest of the collection is equally great – with titles that include "Drinking Wine Spo Dee O Dee", "There's Been A Change In Me", "Devil's Dream", "Gone Gone Gone (alt take 1)", "Sure To Fall (alt take 1)", and "Prekins Wiggle/Dixie Bop (alt take 1)". ✨✧ Rasputin's StashStash (with bonus tracks) (2019 Record Store Day Release) ... CD
Family Groove, 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Never-heard music from the legendary Rasputin's Stash – a funk group who recorded famously on Atlantic and Curtom in the early 70s, then created this gem of an album that appears here for the first time ever! The quality of the work is fantastic, and even seems better than their Curtom album – as they're still as gritty and funk as before, but have this more complex sense of interplay – both in their instrumentation, and in their vocals, which are filled with all these cool harmonic twists and turns – as if The Notations had teamed up with Curtis Mayfield, to create one of the greatest Chicago funk albums of all time! The group produced the whole thing themselves – and although this one never made it to the history book, it's going right to the top of our list of 70s funk classics. Titles include "Make Up Your Mind", "Tarantula", "Children Of The Lord", "Cool When You Don't Know It", "Paradise", "You've Got To Face It", and "TLC". Blue Note/Wallen Bink (UK), 1968/1969/1970. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest albums ever from pianist Duke Pearson – recorded at a time when the musician was taking a bigger role at the Blue Note label, and started exploring some great musical territory in the process! The tracks here were all recorded in the late 60s – but not issued by the label until decades later, when they were pulled together in this fantastic double-length set – a record that comes as a real revelation. The work's quite different than Pearson's big band recordings, or his earlier soul jazz ones – and is a brilliant mix of Brazilian styles, electric instrumentation, complicated arrangements, and some of the more head-oriented jazz that was cropping up on Blue Note at the time – particularly some of the United States Of The Mind albums by Horace Silver! Silver's musical partner Andy Bey sings on the album's title cut – and other musicians include Frank Foster on tenor, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Wally Richardson on guitar, Jerry Dodgion on flute, Ralph Towner on acoustic guitar, and a young Airto on percussion. Titles include the fantastic "I Don't Care Who Knows It", a great version of "Canto De Ossanha", and the tracks "Bloos", "I Don't Know", "Captain Bacardi", "Rosemary's Baby", "Dialogo", "Upa Neguinho", and "Xibaba". Bobby RodriguezSimply Macrame (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Jazz Men/Jazz Detective (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A fantastic album of soulful jazz – and one that's got a lot more staying power than the macrame craze of the 70s! Don't confuse this Bobby with the Rodriguez who put out some mid 70s salsa albums on Vaya in New York – because this Bobby's a trumpet player from the LA scene, one who worked with Gerald Wilson, and is striking out here on his own in a sweet self-produced set! Instrumentation on the set is a bit ambitious – with large-ish sax and trumpet participation – but the overall groove is nice and compressed, and driven by some strong rhythms laid down by Ndugu Chancler and a host of added Latin percussionists. The highlight of the set is the side-long spiritually-soulful "Simply Macrame" – which runs for 16 minutes, and builds nicely in a "Little Sunflower" mode – using some vocals from singer Betty Macias to initiate the Latin-tinged groove, and set the tone for a host of sweet solo work to come. The album also features a nice take on Lee Morgan's "Caramba", plus the original tunes "Judy's In Love" and "Straight No Changes". LP, Vinyl record album

Music Box (France), 1977/1981/1982. New Copy ... $22.99
A trio of really lovely soundtracks from the great French composer Philippe Sarde – each of them a magical illustration of his wonderful talents! Mille Milliards De Dollars has a fantastic use of piano throughout – jazzy, but warm and sentimental around the edges – really the dominant instrument amidst some lighter orchestrations, and used in ways that make for some of the most tuneful, seductive moments in Sarde's legacy from the time! Conte De La Folie Ordinaire is an unusual film – one that stars the great Ben Gazzara in a set of scenes adapted from the stories of Charles Bukowski – set to music by Sarde that often evokes a sense of place in the story, with both Mexican and bluegrass elements in the songs. Last up is Le Crabe-Tambour – Sarde at his most dramatic, scoring for a military thriller – and using lots of brass in very offbeat ways! CD

Omega Productions (France), 1986. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pretty scary soundtrack for this French horror classic – a record that begins with one long extended scream – which in itself is maybe enough to make the whole thing stand out from the rest! Other music that follows has a vibe that's definitely 80s, but also with modes that are sometimes a bit more thoughtful – some darker elements mixed with tuneful passages, in ways that might be more at home with the hipper reaches of the industrial underground – almost in a Current 93 or Nocturnal Emissions mode! There's definitely a use of textural samples that recalls both of those groups – and titles include "Mystic Empire", "Space Wind", "Tomb Opening", "Occult Voices", "Day Of The Dead", and "Grave" – plus the extended "Dead Suite".
