Ed's a singer that we've loved for many years, and await eagerly for each new record – but this early 90s set is one of his first great musical moments, a set that has him really finding his voice, and following strongly in the Brazilian soul tradition of his famous uncle, Tim Maia! And although Motta had worked in some more beat-heavy, poppy modes on previous records, this one has a much richer vibe – and shows the love of older 70s styles that would reemerge later on his seminal AOR set – done here with leaner, more stripped down modes that are mighty nice. The songwriting is great – and Motta's voice, as always, is incredible – and the instrumentation features a fair bit of Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano, which really further the warmth of the vocals. Stunning work from Lucas Arruda – a record we love even more than his first – and we totally loved that one to death! The sound here is prime Brazilian 70s at its best – that magical moment when jazz, fusion, and older bossa-schooled styles all came together in a really unique blend – and also helped Brazil find its own unique sense of soul, too – a quality that really came forth in the best work from Azymuth and Marcos Valle at the end of the decade! No surprise, Lucas has Azymuth bassist Alex Malheiros and Valle collaborator Leon Ware both on board to help out with the record – but the strength of the set is clearly all Arruda's own – as his vocals are wonderful, with a soulful expression that's vaguely in the Ed Motta side of the spectrum – mixed with his own warm lines on Fender Rhodes, which totally warm things up! Production is perfect, and equally vintage – and the album's a treasure we'll be loving for years. We've loved the music of Benny Sings for years – and can't understand why the man's not a much bigger success at a worldwide level – because his songs have the gentle soul and careful construction of the sorts of music that used to grace the airwaves decades back! Yet maybe the obscurity is always what makes Benny so great – as the songs here feel like lost AOR gems from a time when folks really knew how to make a record – but also sifted down to a core approach that never lets things get too overly-polished or commercial – kind of that modern love of classic modes that we also find in the music of Ed Motta, even though Ed's a very different singer overall. Do these guys ever lose their touch? We think not – as this album, the group's umpteenth, is pretty darn great! Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick pulled out all the stops on this set – working with a range of vocalists that includes Joy Rose, Kelli Sae, Tony Momrelle, Joy Malcolm, and Brazilian soul legend Ed Motta! The range of voices on the set really gives it a lot of depth – moving past the easy jazz funk moments of earlier sets, and going for an all-solid, all-soulful approach that really blows our mind! The fourth album by Mondo Grosso – and maybe their best to date! Unlike some of the earlier records, which noodled around a bit too much (although not that much), this is a totally solid record, with a very united set of tracks, and a heck of a lot more music than you get on some of their other albums! There's a lot of warm jazzy bits, put together with strings, soul, and complicated production. Tracks are written with Monday Michiru, Tania Maria, N'Dea Davenport, and other soulful singers – and the album's a stunning testament to how far Japanese soul has come in the past 10 years! And the groove's so far-reaching, that there's even a great track called "Cenario" that features vocals by Brazilian soul great Ed Motta! A real treat, and the kind of a record that will have you happy you paid import price to be the first on your block to have this soon-to-be famous album. The hippest installment so far in the Brazilika series – a mad mix of musical styles from Finders Keepers mainman Andy Votel – all in a freaky, funky, fuzzy blend of sounds!
