Three PiecesVibes Of Truth ... CD
Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A great little album of jazz funk – and the only record we've ever seen by this group! The 3 Pieces may not have lasted long in the record business, but this rare album from 1975 has made them legends on the rare groove scene for years. The record was cut during the height of the jazz funk years at Fantasy Records – and it features Donald Byrd handling the production chores, in a similar manner to the style that he used with the more famous Blackbyrds, who were also recording for Fantasy the time. The record features loads of electric piano and ARP, plus some tight and smooth guitar, and a nice rolling groove that is very catchy. A number of tracks have vocals – in kind of a subdued soul mode – and tracks include the groove classics "Backed Up Against The Wall", "Shortnin Bread", "Concrete Jungle", and "Vibes Of Truth". And believe it or not, there aren't any vibes on the album! CD

✨✧ VariousGospel Truth – The Complete Singles Collection ... CD
Stax/Craft, Early 70s. Used 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
An overdue look at a very cool record label – the short-lived Gospel Truth imprint, which was an outlet for the more spiritual side of Stax Records in the early 70s! The music is gospel, but often has plenty of the best Memphis soul elements of more popular Stax/Volt work of the time – and there's a nice criss-crossing of artists going on here – so that you'll get some gospel singers moving into very soulful territory, and some soul artists trying their hand at music that's a bit more righteous overall! And while albums by The Rance Allen Group on the label have been reissued over the years, this is the first time anyone's pulled together the much more obscure 45s – which gives us a much bigger picture of the label at work. The set features 34 tracks in all – and titles include "Don't Let The Green Grass Fool You" by Reverend W Bernard Avant, "He's Mine" by Jacqui Verdell, "At The Feet Of The Master" by Blue Aquarius, "I'm A Child Of The King" by The People's Choir Of Operation Push, "Reflections" by Louise McCord, "We're The Salt Of The Earth" by Rance Allen Group, "Ride Out The Storm" by Joshie Jo Armstead, "If The Shoe Fits Wear It" by The 21st Century, "Magnificent Sanctuary Band" by Rev Maceo Woods, "Hot Line To Jesus" by Rance Allen Group, "I Got The Vibes" by Joshie Jo Armstead, "Consider Me" by Terry Lynn Community Choir, "Keep My Baby Warm" by Charles May & Annette May Thomas, and "Do It Yourself" by Jimmy Jones. ✨✧ Gary McFarlandIn Sound ... CD
Verve (Japan), 1965. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of the grooviest albums of the 60s – a sublime blend of jazz, bossa, and easy – and a set that definitely lives up to its title! The album's probably the most perfect realization of the unique groove that Gary McFarland was going for back in the day – a mix of vibes, whistling, and wordless vocals, supported by some gently funky rhythms that use a fair bit of electric bass to underscore the groove! The lineup here is wonderful – with Bob Brookmeyer on trombone, Gabor Szabo on guitar, Grady Tate on drums, and Sadao Watanabe making a rare 60s US appearance on flute and tenor sax. Gary blends these instrumental elements perfectly for the record – and comes up with a completely unique sound that can only be described as "McFarlandy"! Amazing cuts include "Fried Bananas", "Bloop Bleep", and "Over Easy" – but the whole album's incredible, and other tracks include "The Sting Of The Bee", "Wine & Bread", "Here I Am", "The Hills Of Verdugo", and "The Moment Of Truth". A pair of fantastic albums from vibes master and genius arranger Gary McFarland – back to back on a single CD! First up is The In Sound – one of the grooviest albums of the 60s – a sublime blend of jazz, bossa, and easy – and a set that definitely lives up to its title! The album's probably the most perfect realization of the unique groove that Gary McFarland was going for back in the day – a mix of vibes, whistling, and wordless vocals, supported by some gently funky rhythms that use a fair bit of electric bass to underscore the groove! Soft Samba is a dream of a record from Gary McFarland – lightly jazzy instrumentals with a warm bossa nova undercurrent! The style is incredible – a sweet blend of vibes, guitar, and even some light whistling – often also featuring wordless jazz vocals – scatting along with the groove in a melodic and lovely kind of way! The whole thing's incredibly charming, and even familiar tunes come across sounding quite different in McFarlands hands. Titles include "From Russia With Love", "More", "Emily", "La Vie En Rose", "The Love Goddess", and even a groovy take on "I Want To Hold Your Hand". For you true swingers, the cover includes directions for mixing a "Soft Samba Cocktail" (courtesy Spanish Sherry Institute)! CD

Oliver NelsonSwiss Suite ... CD
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $7.99 14.99
A killer set of searing soulful spiritual material from Oliver Nelson – and one of his best albums of the 70s! There's hardly anything "Swiss" in the music – save for the fact that it was recorded at the Montreux Jazz Fest – as the large ensemble recording has Nelson at the helm of a very hip group of musicians – really stretching out into territory that's more Strata East than any of his other work, especially on the title track! In addition to the tenor from Gato Barberi and alto from Eddie Vinson – both featured on the title – the set also features Charles Tolliver and Harry Beckett on trumpets, Bosko Petrovic on vibes, Na Na on barimbau, Bernard Purdie on drums, and Stanley Cowell on piano. Side one features the soaring "Swiss Suite" – an extended number done for the set – and side two has a bit more Nelson touches coming into play with the progressive lineup – on titles that include "Stolen Moments", "Black Brown & Beautiful", and "Blues & The Abstract Truth". Ike & Tina TurnerCome Together/Nuff Said ... CD
Liberty/BGO (UK), 1970/1971. Used ... $9.99
A pair of Ike & Tina Turner classics – back to back on one CD! First up is Come Together – a key crossover set for the soul duo! Ike and Tina Turner crossed over big by this point in their career – grabbing a lot of ears that were mostly listening to rock music, but who finally got that many of their heroes were influenced by the pair – who were then throwing things back towards all their copycats with a record like this! Case in point is the album's famous cover of "Come Together" – which has Tina hitting some of her slinkiest, sexiest modes on record – while also mixing things up with plenty of deep soul elements on other tunes too! There's a great blend of rock and soul – Fillmore vs Muscle Shoals – and in addition to "Come Together", other titles include "Contact High", "I Want To Take You Higher", "Honky Tonk Woman", "Evil Man", "Doin It", and "Young & Dumb". Nuff Said is one of the most iconic albums from the team of Ike & Tina Turner – a set recorded at a time when the duo were complete superstars in both the world of rock and soul – and were able to step out with a heck of a lot of power in the grooves! Ike produced and arranged the album in his studio, and he also changed the name of Kings Of Rhythm to The Family Vibes – showing that strong shift they'd made into funkier modes for the 70s – augmented here by the presence of Leon Ware's songwriting talents on a number of the songs. Tina's the real star, of course – and sounds tremendous on titles that include "Baby", "Sweet Flustrations", "I Love What You Do To Me", "Tell The Truth", "I Love Baby", and "Nuff Said". CD

One of the greatest contemporary talents on vibes – sounding great here in the company of a very tight quartet! All tracks are original, which furthers the special, intimate vibe of the group – written and performed by a quartet that features Art Hirihara on piano and Fender Rhodes, Boris Kozlov on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums – matching the energy of Gillece at every turn, on titles that include "Rattles", "Extraction", "Event Horizon", "Going On Well", "Don't Despair", "Outnumbered", and "Glad To Be Back".
