✨✧ Sylvia StriplinGive Me Your Love (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Uno Melodic/P-Vine (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Amazing! This lost Roy Ayers-produced gem from the early 80s has not only been one of the biggest sample records of all time, but it's also become one of the holy grails of the groovy record collecting scene! It's a stellar bit of jazzy soul with the same production vibe that's characterized Roy's best work – but made all the more sublime thanks to Sylvia Striplin's beautifully fragile and soulful vocals, which sound a bit like Minnie Riperton's at times – but also has a fuller, richer quality too. The record's got arrangements by Sylvia, Roy, and James Bedford (who also recorded for Uno Melodic), and it includes classics like "Give Me Your Love", "You Can't Turn Me Away", "Look Towards The Sky", "All Alone", and a great cover of Roy Ayers' "Searchin". Asha PuthliDevil Is Loose ... LP
CBS/Mr Bongo (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 27.99
A masterpiece of spacey soul by the great Asha Puthli – a really unique 70s singer who has this incredible vocal range, and a great way of using it amidst slinkily soulful tracks – a bit like Minnie Riperton, or maybe like some of the Sylvia Striplin work with Roy Ayers! The sound here is handled by Dieter Zimmermann – a German producer who adds in all these great keyboards that go perfectly with Asha's vocals – often hitting a midtempo pace that's quite different than some of the more disco-based material she'd record later on in the 70s. Titles include the standout break track "Space Walk", which is one of our all time favorite obscure soul tracks – and other tracks include "Wonder Why", "Hello Everyone", "Flying Fish", "The Devil Is Loose", "Good Night", and "Say Yes". ✨✧ VariousUno Melodic Story ... CD
Uno Melodic/Charly (UK), Early 80s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An insanely wonderful treat – a sampling of tracks from the rare Uno Melodic label, started by Roy Ayers after leaving the major labels in the early 80s! Although Roy's name should have been enough to get the records out there, most of these tracks have always been very very tough to find – as the label went belly-up pretty quickly, and loads of excellent work barely made it onto the market. The feel here is very much like Roy's best work from the time – maybe even better, as the freedom of the indie scene really gave him a chance to work on some very hip experiments! This 14 tracks set brings together a stunning batch of rare singles like "Remember To Remember" by Rick Holmes, "You Can't Turn Me Away" by Sylvia Striplin, "It's Your Love" by Ethel Beatty, "Just Keep My Boogie" by Jaymz Bedford, "Baby, Don't You Know" by Bobbi Humphrey, "He Is Mine Forever" and "Turned On To You" by Eighties Ladies, "You Said" by Sylvia Striplin, "I Know You Care" by Ethel Beatty, "Interlude" by Justo Almario, and "Rapped Up In Your Love" and "Everybody" by Roy Ayers. CD
(Out of print – includes 5 tracks that didn't make the 2018 Expansion anthology.)

✨✧ Roy AyersLots Of Love ... LP
Uno Melodic, 1983. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An incredible album by Roy Ayers – but one that's often overlooked because it was a rare indie effort issued between Roy's years at Polydor and Columbia! The session's Roy's only full album for Uno Melodic – the label he formed to showcase the talents of Sylvia Striplin, Ladies Of The Eighties, and others – and it's done in a snapping, boogie-styled groove that's very similar to the work by other Uno acts at the time. There's still plenty of the late Polydor Roy in the mix too – especially on the album's mellower numbers, which glide along nicely with all the right jazzy touches we love in a classic Ayers groove! Highlights include the excellent "Chicago", a really dark funk track with a mad descending groove; the Fela-styled "Black Family"; the warmly jazzy "Lots Of Love", an instrumental with vibes along strings; and the bass bumping "Everybody", a wicked later funk number! Other tracks include "And Then We Were One", "DC City", "Drive", and "Fast Money" – all great too! LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing, with Brain Food etch! Cover has some light wear in one bottom corner, and a tiny stain in another, very small – but rest is nice.)

✨✧ Aquarian DreamFantasy ... LP
Elektra, 1978. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Righteous soul, but with a wicked groove too – a killer set from Aquarian Dream, made even better by some great Norman Connors production! In a way, Aquarian Dream were to Norman Connors what Ramp were to Roy Ayers – in that the group wasn't really that dominated by Connors, but they did benefit a lot from his groundbreaking work in the jazz funk field – getting a level of sophistication in their sound that's really wonderful – and mixed with almost equal parts soul, funk, and jazz in the instrumentation! Vocals are often in a harmony mode – again in the manner of Ramp – and there's a classy yet cosmic sound to the record that we totally love. (And there's also one more Roy Ayers-like connection in the vocal department – since the group features Sylvia Striplin, who later recorded for Roy's Uno Melodic label!) The album's got a number of nice groovers with a strongly off-beat sound – and titles include "Friends", "It Ain't Whatcha Say", "You're A Star", "Play It For Me", and "Gentle Thoughts". ✨✧ Roy AyersAfrica, Center Of The World (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Polydor/Universal (Japan), 1981. Used ... Out Of Stock
Roy Ayers in a very Afro-styled mode – working here on his own after a famous collaboration with Fela Kuti – in a set that's filled with the same sort of hard-driving Afro-Funk grooves that you'd find in Fela's classic recordings! The songs are shorter than Fela's, and with more of Roy's usual smooth jazzy production style – but the overall influence is very much in the Afro-Funk vein, and the album's sort of a "part 2" to the Music Of Many Colors set that was cut a few years before. William Allen worked on the record with Roy – playing choppy Afro-Funk bass, and arranging and producing a lot of the material with Roy and Jaymz Bedford – and the record also features a host of extra percussion players, as well as some vocals by the lovely Sylvia Striplin. Includes the great groover "Africa, Center Of The World", plus "The River Niger", and a great remake of "Third Eye", which was on Everybody Loves The Sunshine, but is redone here with a heavier sound! Other tracks include "There's A Masterplan", "I'll Just Keep Trying", and "Destination Motherland". CD
