✨✧ Pete RodriguezI Like It Like That (A Mi Me Gusta Asi) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Alegre/Craft, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A fantastic little album of Latin Soul – a perfect example of why Pete was known as the "King Of The Boogaloo" during the 60s! The group's having a non-stop party on the album – breaking it hard with heavy piano lines, rumbling bass underneath the grooves, tight timbales, and some shouted lyrics in English that are always very catchy. The title cut, "I Like It Like That", is the sort of groover that you'll be singing for years – even after hearing it only once – and the album's filled with other great cuts, like "Pete's Madness", "Micaela", "Si Quires Bailar", "Soiy El Rey" and "3 and 1". ✨✧ Johnny RichardsWide Range ... LP
Capitol/Creative World, 1957. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A killer album from Johnny Richards – possibly the best he ever cut! The album sparkles with all the intensity he brought to Stan Kenton's Cuban Fire album – with bits of Latin, jazz, and some of the modernist scoring that Kenton, Richards, and Pete Rugolo were using at the time. However, the main thing about this album is that it swings like a mo-fo – moving past any tricks and gags to hit a strong jazz mode, with excelelnt solo work by players like Frank Socolow, Gene Quill, and trumpeter Burt Collins. Willie Rodriguez brings some nice Latin percussion to the set – and titles include "Cimarron", "Eyes", "Nipigon", and "The Ballad Of Tappan Zee". LP, Vinyl record album
(Later pressing. Cover has light wear and aging.)

✨✧ Willie RodriguezAt The Happenin' ... LP
Fonseca/Andale, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Plenty happenin' here – a wealth of boogaloo grooves, mad Latin jazz riffs, and lots lots more – all served up on a platter that's easily one of the most cooking ever from trumpeter Willie Rodriguez! Like other releases on the Fonseca label, there's a nicely messed-up groove going on – a style that easily shifts between different Latin modes in search of the rawest sound possible – without any thought of mainstream convention, or the sort of straighter-laced sounds that might have played with the suburban crowds. Willie's band is clearly nice and youthful, and more than willing to follow his leadership – working equally well on both the English and Spanish language tunes on the set. Titles include "Boogaloo Hay", "Sansuyo", "Mi Guajira", "Mi Shingaling", "The Clock", "What You Want Is Boogaloo", "7th Ave Train", and the very tasty "Descarga El Bravo"! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jazz Corps with Roland KirkJazz Corps ... CD
Pacific Jazz, 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
An unusual record, but a great one too – a set that mixes the offbeat reed work of Roland Kirk with some inventive ideas from a group of young west coast players! Some of the group members are names you'll recognize on their own from genre-crossing sessions for other labels – like vibist Lyn Blessing, and bassist Bill Plummer – both groovy talents whose touches really make the record sparkle – and the rest of the combo features trumpeter Tommy Peltier, drummer Maurice Miller, and reedman Freddy Rodriguez! And honestly, the whole thing's great, even without Kirk's help – but Roland's wit and creative energy really send the album home with work on tenor, flute, and stritch. Titles include "Harplyness", "Chalan Pago", "Le Blessing", and "Meanwhile". CD

✨✧ Tito PuenteMaster Timbalero ... CD
Concord, 1993. Used ... Out Of Stock
Proof that Tito Puente's later home at Concord Records was always a mighty nice fit – a move to a west coast outlet, which couldn't have been easy for the legendary New Yorker – but a place that always gave him a chance to cut no-nonsense Latin jazz sets like this! The group's got a bold, jazzy vibe throughout – thanks to strong horn work from reedmen Mario Rivera, Bobby Porcelli, and Michael James Turre – plus twin trombonists Sam Burtis and Jeff Cressman, and trumpeters Ray Vega and Ite Jerez! The mighty Sonny Bravo handles piano, and Bobby Rodriguez is on bass – so Tito's groove here cooks nicely throughout, especially given the extra line of percussionists on the set. Titles include "Azu Ki Ki", "Old Arrival", "Enchantment", "Sakura Sakura", "Vaya Puente", and "Sun Goddess". CD
