✨✧ African Music MachineBlack Water Gold ... CD
Soul Power/Fuel 2000, 1972/1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
Incredible work from the obscure African Music Machine – a southern funk combo led by bassist Louis Villery – a legendary batch of funky singles, finally brought together as a full album! The band has a very unique sound that involves a lot of rolling bubbling basslines, spacey organ grooves, tight choppy guitar riffs, and punchy horn blasts – almost with the African elements promised in the title, but served up with a deeper funk sound all the way through! In a way, the group's a bit like Cymande or some of the other 70s hybrid ensembles – yet they've got a lot less dub, a much more direct funky groove, and plety of raw southern elements in the mix as well! This is the funky 45 material we first cut our teeth on back in the day – and the original singles are legendary! Includes massive cuts like "Black Water Gold (Pearl)", "A Girl In France", "Never Name A Baby (Before It's Born), "Making Nassau Fruit Drink", "Camel Time", "The Dapp", "Tropical", and "Mr. Brown". VariousSouthern Funkin' – Louisiana Funk & Soul 1967 to 1979 ... CD
BGP (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Heavy heavy funk from the Louisiana scene of the late 60s and 1970s – and a great collection that really gets past the dominance of the New Orleans sound! The set moves way past the Crescent City to uncover a wealth of great bits recorded in smaller studios located in Shreveport, Lake Charles, and a variety of tiny scenes in the southwest side of Louisiana – and the result is a great batch of tunes with a really gritty, down-n-dirty sound! There's a wealth of great funky styles in the set – including James Brown-inspired jammers, southern soul burners, and some other great modes that show that Louisiana's got a heck of a lot more to offer than just New Orleans funk. Titles include work from the Anla, Murco, Soul International, Goldband, and Tic Toc labels – a total of 22 cuts that include "Soul Time" by Ernest Thomas, "Soul Feeling (parts 1 & 2)" by Eddy G Giles, "Soul Brothers Testify (part 1)" by Chester Randles Soul Senders, "Soul Power" by Abraham & The Casanovas, "Put It On" by Count Rockin Sidney with The Dukes, "Fix It" by Clifton White & His Royal Knights, "Miss Hard To Get" by Dennis Landry, "No Sad Times" by Johnny Truit, "Black Water Gold" by African Music Machine, and "I Got A Groove" by JJ Callier. ✨✧ VariousBusting Out – Ghetto Grooves From Dusty Cellars ... CD
Backbeats (UK), Early 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great set of old school funky numbers – the kind of indie soul 45s that first helped define the sound of rare groove back in the 80s – still as brilliantly bumping all these many years later! Most tracks here are from small label 45s of the early 70s – tracks that weren't issued on LP, and were often by artists who didn't ever even get to cut full albums – but who hit some great underground fame for their sharp grooves and wicked approach to instrumentation and vocals! The set's got loads of classics we've loved for years, but which haven't been reissued often in recent sets – cuts that include "Mr Brown" by African Music Machine, "It's Your Thing" by Toddlin Town Sounds, "Keep On Dancing" by Alvin Cash, "Somebody Help The Beggar Man" by Jackie Beavers, "Right On Jody" by Bobby Patterson, "Gossip" by Cyril Neville, "Good Book" by The 8th Day, "Close Your Big Mouth" by The Politicians, "Hunk O Funk" by Scott Brothers Orchestra, "Ace In The Hole" by Honey Cone, "Miss Funky Fox" by Exit 9, "Gotta Get Away" by Harolyn Montgomery, and "Know What To Do When You Get It" by The Genies. A stunning collection of rare funk and soul – and a set that, back in the 80s, was our doorway to a lost 70s world that we missed the first time around! The track selection is great – all sorts of gems that were playing big on the London rare groove scene of the late 80s – with tracks that include "Got to Get Your Own" by Reuben Wilson, "You're Losing Me" by Ann Sexton, "Moon Walk" by Pee Wee Ellis, "I Don't Dog No Phony (part 2)" by Moody Scott, "So Much Trouble In My Mind" by Joe Quaterman, "Black Water" by African Music Machine, "Funky Song" by Ripple, "Goo Bah" by Continental Showstoppers, "The Dapp" by African Music Msachine, and "Brother Man Sister Ann" by Clemon Smith. ✨✧ VariousContempo Story 1973 to 1977 – The Original Home Of Soul (3CD set) ... CD
Contempo/Soul Time (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of soul music from a famous London label of the 70s – almost all of it American work, but hand-picked with the kind of selection that made Contempo a strong precursor for later British reissue labels – like Ace/Kent, Charly, or Expansion Records! Contempo grew out of the magazine Blues & Soul – that very long-running bible of soul music that came out of London – and like the magazine, the label really focused on lesser-known acts, both from the 60s, and more contemporary years too – often with an eye towards tunes that still warranted greater discovery by the world at large. Some of the numbers are great groovers, others are in a deep soul mode – and in the later years, you can definitely hear a growing love of disco – especially on some of Contempo's own productions. The company also recorded older American soul singers when they visited the UK for shows during the 70s – finding audiences that were stronger than they had back home, and a label that was also willing to give them a chance in the studio. There's a huge amount of great work here – from late 60s American soul through late 70s clubby groovers – and as usual with Cherry Red, the whole 3CD package comes with a very detailed booklet of notes and photos. The set features 63 tracks in all – with work by The Exciters, Bettye Swann, Major Lance, Black Stash, The Montclairs, Jimmy Thomas, Ultrafunk, Moses Dillard, Ernie Bush, Mr Superbad, Dorothy Moore, Sir Mack Rice, Sam & Dave, Rice & Beans Orchestra, Oscar Toney Jr, Richie Pitts, The Masai, JJ Barnes, African Music Machine, Cymande, Juggy Jones, Armada Orchestra, Banzai, and many others! Black DiscoBlack Disco – Discovery 1975/1976 ... LP
As Shams (South Africa), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $30.99 34.99
There's less disco here than you might expect, as the group's a very jazzy one – with tenor and flute from South African jazz legend Basil Coetzee, working next to the organ and drum machine of Pops Mohamed as he creates a very cool, unique groove! The music's an extension of other South African funk of the time, but given the use of drum machine on some tracks (a few feature live drum performances), there's a mix of modes going on here that's really unique – jazz funk, but of a leaner style – maybe a bit more laidback, and with plenty of focus on reedwork and keyboard solos! The set brings together tracks from three rare albums by the group – and titles include "Dark Clouds (part 1)", "Spiritual Feeling", "Night Express (single version)", "Kids In The Dark", "I'm Organized", and "Pops Blue". VariousGhana Special 2 – Electronic Highlife & Afro Sounds In The Diaspora 1980 to 1993 ... CD
Soundway (UK), 1980s/Early 1990s. New Copy 2CDs ... $17.99 18.99
A long-overdue follow up to the legendary first Ghana Special collection – and one that presents a second chapter of work – not just from the regional scene, but from a time when some of its best artists were also recording in other nations too! The result is a more powerful, soulful style than before – not in a too-commercial "world music" way, but instead blended with elements of soul, funk, and newer club styles to really kick up the groove a bit more – while still keeping all the best elements of the 70s groove intact! There's definitely some drum machine rhythms along the way, but the overall vibe is still nice and warm – and very different than more electro-styled work from the South African scene of the time – and as always with Soundway, the notes and track selection are superb. Titles include "Ebe Ye Yie Ni" by The Godfathers, "Obiara Bewu" by Rex Gyamfi, "Kaakyire Nua" by George Darko, "Adjoa Amisa" by Andy Vans, "Barima Nsu" by Kwasi Afari Minta, "Mumude" by Nan Mayen, "Sii Nana" by Bessa Simons, "New Dance" by Ernest Honny, "Fre Me" by Charles Amoah, "Jigi Jigi" by Dadadi, "Apple" by Gyedu Blay Ambolley, "Alaiye" by Abdul Raheem, "Gye Wani" by Pat Thomas, and "MC Mambo" by Pepper Onion Ginger & Salt. ✨✧ VariousHaiti Direct – Big Band, Mini Jazz & Twoubadou Sounds 1960 to 1978 ... CD
Strut (UK), 1960s/1970s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed look at the confusing world of grooves from Haiti – a scene that's always been accessible to most listeners in the US, but never with the kind of focus and direction we need! Haitian records are often a bit perplexing to our crate-digging ears – they look great on the cover, usually feature a hip lineup of cats with jazz instruments, but often move into territory that's either too sweet or too loose – not the kind of heavier sounds we were expecting. Yet this set really brings the right sort of focus to Haitian music – and uses the Strut Records approach that's been tuned towards African and South American grooves in the past – all to pull out the funkiest, jazziest, grooviest tunes from the 60s and 70s. The package has a great set of notes that really illustrate the scene and styles behind the music on the disc – and titles include "Ce Pas" by Tabou Combo, "Pile Ou Face" by Les Loups Noirs, "Ti Garcon" by Ibo Combo, "Choc Vikings" by Les Vikings, "Ti Machine" by Les Animateurs, "Cote Moune Yo" by Super Jazz Des Jeunes, "Cochon St Antoine" by Ti Paris, "L'Artibonite" by Les Freres Dejean, "Suspann" by Caribbean Sextet, "Line" by Bossa Combo, and "Ti Lu Lupe" by Scorpio Universal. ✨✧ Nkono TelesLove Vibration ... LP
Soundway (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sweet keyboard grooves from Nkono Teles – a Nigerian musician who first got his start in the band of Tony Allen, but who sounds very different here on his own! Nkono's image on the cover gives you plenty of insight to the sound of the record – as the cuts are heavy on keyboards played by Teles, who also throws in some basslines and drum machine bits as well – all to serve up a lean take on Nigerian funk styles that would have been served up by a fuller band a few years before. Teles' style is great – warmer and more soulful than some of the colder synth pop from the South African scene – still very much in the best tradition of Nigerian grooves – and the set pulls together six tracks from his rare albums of the time – titles that include "Love Vibration", "Martin Street Special", "Love Got Hold On Me", "Hometown Weather", "Party Beats", and "Martin Street (new version)".
