Kashmere Stage BandZero Point – 1971 to 1972 ... LP
Kashmere Records/P-Vine (Japan), Early 1970s. New Copy (reissue)... $31.99 39.99 About November 20, 2024
When these guys say "stage band", they aren't kidding – as the group's got so many members, there's barely room left on the stage for the instruments! That doesn't stop the record from being plenty darn funky, though – as the sound is right, tight, and outta site – every bit as great as the group's famous funky 45s, and with a similarly hard Texas take on deep funk! The album's got some wonderful covers of famous soul hits, plus a few hip originals – and there's some great moments that show the group hitting a more ambitious jazzy feel, one that recalls some of the hipness of the Chicago sound of The Pharoahs! Titles include "Al's Tune", "Scorpio", "Masquerade", "Walk On By", "All Praises", "Thank You", "Do Your Thing", and "To All The Beautiful Black Women". LP, Vinyl record album

Kashmere Stage BandOut Of Gas But Still Burning ... LP
Kashmere Records/P-Vine (Japan), Early 1970s. New Copy (reissue)... $31.99 39.99 About December 20, 2024
A stunning batch of funky big band tracks from the Kashmere Stage Band – sounding a lot fuller than on their first LP – thanks to an expanded lineup that gives them a whole new sound! The group are grooving here in a mode that's a lot like classic 70s blacksploitation soundtrack work – with a full ensemble that features funky drums, electric bass, and keys in the rhythms, plus lots of tight funky horns over the top! Tracks are long, and groove with a jazzy flourish that we wouldn't have expected so strongly – hitting hard on plenty of nice nice numbers that include "Kash Register", "Do Your Thing", "Angel", "The Zero Point", and "Getting It Out Of My System". ✨✧ Kashmere Stage BandTexas Thunder Soul 1968 to 1974 ... LP
Now Again/Stones Throw, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A massive exploration of the music of Kashmere Stage Band – the legendary Texas funk combo whose work barely got any circulation at the time – but who've become minor stars, thanks to the efforts of Stones Throw and Wax Poetics! The set goes even deeper than any of the previous vinyl reissues of work by the group – and features some previously unreleased tracks, and alternate takes on their funkiest numbers! The Kashmere groove is incredible – blasting horns, scratchy guitars, and funky drums – all wrapped super-tight around a range of original material and some more familiar numbers – all recast here in super-heavy funk mode! Titles include "All Praises", "Thank You", "Scorpio (extended)", "Headwiggle", "Do You Dig It Man", "Getting It Out Of My System", "Zero Point (parts 1 & 2)", "Boss City", "Burning Spear", "Take Five", and "Keep Doing It". ✨✧ VariousBaia Degli Angeli Vol 1 – 1977 to 1978 – The Legendary Italian Discoteque Of The 70's ... CD
Amarkord (Italy), Late 1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed look at a key force in Italian disco – the legendary Baia Degli Angeli, a club that was as important to Europe as the Paradise Garage was to New York! The CD features a great selection of numbers that played strongly on Angeli's dancefloor in the late 70s, most of which have a spacey electronic quality that links them strongly to some of the best underground club of New York at the time. The CD's mixed together in a way that recreates the feel of the legendary floor – and titles include "Midnight Madness" by Don Ray, "Zone" by Rhythm Makers, "Don't You Know Who Did It" by John Forde, "Pazuzu" by Tony Silvester & The New Ingredient, "Surprise" by Andre Gagnon, "Sweet Lady" by Chain Reaction, "Timing Forget The Timing" by Black Devil, "Magnifico Mambo" by Five Letters, "Come On & Rock" by Needa, "Point Zero" by Voyage, "Un Habit En La Bemol" by Flashback Roger Gravel, and "Monkey Star" by Arpadys. ✨✧ WeekndDawn FM ... LP
Republic, 2021. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A real surprise from The Weeknd – and we don't just mean that because the album was dropped on the public with no announcement beforehand! The record's also a great evolution of the sound that's gotten such wide attention in a surprisingly short span of time – a bit of a concept album, in that the set's conceived as some alternate-universe sort of radio listen, complete with spoken bits from Jim Carrey at certain points – all helped out with production work from Max Martin and Oneohtrix Point Never! Tyler The Creator makes one wonderful guest appearance, but the set's definitely guided by The Weeknd's maturing genius throughout – on titles that include "Don't Break My Heart", "How Do I Make You Love Me", "Every Angel Is Terrifying", "Take My Breath", "Gasoline", "I Heard You're Married", "Less Than Zero", and "Best Friends". Larry NozeroTime ... LP
Strata/BBE (UK), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 38.99 On June 21, 2024
Sweet reeds and lots of Fender Rhodes – a lost 70s album from the Detroit underground, and one of the best-ever sets from saxophonist Larry Nozero! Larry's working here in close collaboration with keyboardist Dennis Tini – whose Rhodes and Clavinet work really make the album sparkle, giving the whole thing a spacey sound that really suits Larry's long-spun lines on flute, tenor, and soprano sax! The style is mellow, yet never sleepy – a vibe that's even deeper than the CTI sound at its best, and served up here with an underground style that really keeps a sharp edge throughout. Added strings seep into the mix at times, almost giving the record a soundtrack vibe at points – but most of the best action is from the interplay of Nozero and Tini, who dominate nearly every tune. Tini uses overdubs to create these scatting voices at a few points – and titles include "Tony", "Chronicle Of The Murdered House", "Tune For LN", "Two Worlds", "All The Things You Are", and "Impressions Of My Lady". ✨✧ Matthew ShippZero ... CD
ESP, 2018. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two sides of zero from Matthew Shipp – one CD of solo piano material, and a second disc that features spoken Shipp delivering "A Lecture On Nothingness"! As you might guess, we're most moved by the piano work – which is wonderful, and seems to have Matthew rediscovering some of his warmer elements, while still keeping things very angular, experimental, and full of surprise! There's these subtle colors here that could sometimes be missing from Shipp's music in points over the past decade or two – and there's some especially beautiful moments that almost have him working in territory of Herbie Nichols or Thelonious Monk – with lots of beautiful angles and shapes from the piano. Titles include "Zero Skip & A Jump", "Zero", "Abyss Before Zero", "After Zero", "Pattern Emerge", "Cosmic Sea", and "Zero Subtract From Jazz". CD

✨✧ Iceberg SlimReflections ... CD
ALA/Infinite Zero, 1976. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic album of bad-rapping spoken material from Iceberg Slim – one of the hippest 70s sets of its type, and a great audio tribute to the man who wrote the books Pimp, Trick Baby, and Mama Black Widow! Slim reads his own work in a very laidback style, but one with a slinky, pimpish feel too – kind of a relaxed version of the Lightning Rod mode, with similar themes delivered in rhyming prose – maybe the west coast take on territory explored by The Last Poets, or maybe the audio equivalent of the blackspolitation album The Mack – in comparison to more righteous narratives of the time. Backings are by the Rod Holloway Quartet – who hit some great bluesy modes on the set – vamping behind Slim's cool vocals, which themselves are recorded with a nicely pointed quality. Titles include "Mama Debt", "Durealla", "The Fall", and "Broadway Sam". Right up there with Watts Prophets, Last Poets, and Lightning Rod for sheer 70s hipness! CD
(1995 Infinite Zero pressing with white background. Artwork has some age spots.)

✨✧ Jimmy LyonsComplete Black Saint/Soul Note Recordings (Wee Sneezawee/Give It Up/Burnt Offering/Nuba/Something In Return) (5CD box set) ... CD
Black Saint (Italy), 1980s. Used 5 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A great run of music from Jimmy Lyons – some of his most important albums as a leader! First up is Wee Sneezawee – the kind of work that makes you love the Black Saint label for giving players like Jimmy Lyons a chance to still express themselves this way! Lyons is in wonderful form throughout – blowing with all the sharp tones that you'd know from his work with Cecil Taylor, but also bringing in a bit more structure too – kind of shaping a coherent sound out of an infinite array of possible actions – any of which seem possible at any moment, given the dynamic energy of the group! Other players include William Parker on bass, Paul Murphy on drums, Karen Borca on bassoon, and Raphe Malik on trumpet – and tracks include "Wee Sneezawee", "Gossip", "Shackinback", "Remembrance", and "Driads". On Give It Up, Jimmy Lyons is wonderful, but equally great is trumpeter Enrico Rava – whose bold tones on the record easily match those of Lyons in terms of energy and inventiveness! The format is relatively free – although some tunes have a bit of an inside swing, at least more so than Lyons' work with Cecil Taylor – and other players include Karen Borca on bassoon, Jay Oliver on bass, and Paul Murphy on drums. Titles include the long workouts "Methods", "Never", and "Give It Up" – plus the shorter tune "Ballada". Burnt Offering features great duets between Jimmy Lyons on alto and Andrew Cyrille on percussion – and titles include "Popp A", "Exotique", and "Burnt Offering". Nuba is a compelling collaboration between percussionist Andrew Cyrille, vocalist Jeanne Lee, and alto saxophonist Jimmy Lyons – one of the freer sessions on the Black Saint label, and one of the most striking as well! Cyrille handles a wide range of percussion – and also a few whistles too – and he really sets the tone with his open, expressive approach to his instruments – almost more melodic at points than rhythmic, with echoes of African roots that come through more strongly than on some of his other albums. Most numbers are pretty spare, and titles include "Nuba 1", "Cornbread Picnic (Maize)", "The One Before Zero", "JJ & A", "In These Last Days", "Sorry", and "Nuba 2". Something In Return is another set of duets between Lyns and Andrew Cyrille! While working in Cecil Taylor's group, Cyrille and Lyons developed a wonderful interplay and dynamic, which can be felt in full effect on this wonderful duo recording, where they approach mostly original material, but also take on Strayhorn's "Take The A Train". Also includes the title track "Lorry", "JL", "Nuba" and "Fragments I". CD
