Akira MiyazawaAkira Miyazawa (aka Yamame) ... CD
King (Japan), 1962. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
If the cover image of a Akira Miyazawa fishing in a trout stream wasn't already enough to make us love this one, the music on the disc certainly is – as the album's a real shining jewel in the Japanese jazz scene of the 60s, the kind of record that really set a whole new standard for the players involved! Miyazawa's got a tone here that's really incredible – an approach to the alto that's a bit like Lou Donaldson during his bop years for Blue Note, but which is also recorded here with a great sense of space that echoes out wonderfully – even when Akira's just doing a little. The group is relatively large, but all focused around Miyazawa's horn – and other players include Sadao Watanabe on flute and Masahiko Sato on piano. Titles include the great originals "Yamame" and "Fly Casting", plus "Out Of Nowhere", "Like Sonny", and "Le Crespuscule Enbaume". CD

Pony Canyon (Japan), 1989. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $59.99 69.99
Brilliant live work from legendary Japanese saxophonist Akira Miyazawa – one of the first players on his scene in the 60s to forge something fresh and new – still going very strong here on this concert performance from the end of the 80s! The tracks are nice and lean – played by a quartet that features Harumi Takeuchi on piano, Shunsuke Takeuchi on bass, and Masahiko Kozu on drums – players who easily bow to the leadership of Miyazawa, and allow him plenty of room for these sharp-edged tenor solos throughout! Titles include long takes on "Baby Sea Horse", "Poor Butterfly", "On Green Dolphin Street", "If Ever I Would Leave You", "Billie's Bounce", and "I Can't Get Started". LP, Vinyl record album

YazzWanted ... LP
Elektra, 1988. Near Mint- ... $3.99
A standout solo moment for Yazz – the singer who first rose to fame as part of the Coldcut soundsystem, then really broke big at a point when UK soul was cracking the American mainstream! Yazz may have a bleached-out look on the cover, but her sound is deeply soulful – and fits in perfectly with the house-styled grooves on the record – backings that have an unabashed love of disco, at a time when listening audiences were maybe forgiving that music for all of its previous excesses, and strongly embracing its best qualities again – in a groove that's maybe a bit similar to Lisa Stansfield at the time, although with more beats and less strings. Production and backings are by Coldcut, FON, Youth, and other hip talents – and titles include her great remake of "The Only Way Is Up" – plus "Systematic People", "Wanted On The Floor", "Stand Up For Your Love Rights", "Fine Time", "Where Has All The Love Gone", "Got To Share", and "Turn It Up". ✨✧ Akira MiyazawaBull Trout/Iwana ... LP
Victor/Lawson (Japan), 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A fishy little record from saxophonist Akira Miyazawa – but a great one too, and an indication that he was probably one of the greatest modernists on the Japanese scene of the time! The set's built around four long tracks – all played with a main focus on the tenor, handled here in a boldly confident, spiritually searching way that reminds us a fair bit of early Archie Shepp at his best. Akira's prone to angular tones, but never too much so – and although he's often concerned with carving lines out of sound and space, there's always a strong sense of soul and swing here – one that really keeps the record flowing! Other instrumentation includes piano, bass, drums, and a bit of percussion – and tracks include "Bull Trout", "Brown Trout", "Rainbow Trout", and "Ayu". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Yazuaki ShimizuKiren ... LP
Palto Flats, 1984. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really unusual album from the Japanese scene of the 80s – a set that was unissued at the time, but which is right in line with the other groundbreaking music of Yazuaki Shimizu! At some level, there's echoes of the instrumental experiments of Ryuichi Sakamoto going on here – but at another level, there's a feel that's colder, and more stark – almost like some of the cold wave elements of the European scene – which, when blended with a few occasional warmer aspects of the record, really makes for a sound that's wonderful! All tracks are instrumental, although it does feel like there's some processed vocals in the blend – and titles include "Ore No Umi", "Shiasate", "Peruvian Pink", "Ashita", "Asate", and "Kagerofu". ✨✧ Sadao Watanabe & Akira MiyazawaLatin Barock Collection ... CD
King (Japan), 1965. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Is that barock or baroque? Whatever the case, the album's a pretty darn groovy affair – twin flutes from Sadao Watanabe and Akira Miyazawa – two of Japan's best reedmen at the end of the 60s – working here with some sweet arrangements that mix classical roots with mod instrumental modes! The approach is a bit like some of the best groovy European sessions of this type – and the production and instrumentation also carry occasional soundtrack echoes too – especially in the album's use of bossa rhythms, vibes, and wordless vocals at points – which make the whole thing feel like some lost Italian or French session from the time. Titles include "Orchestral Suite No 2", "Flute Sonata No 1", "Musical Offering", "Toccata & Fugue In D Minor", and "Invention In 6 Parts No 9". CD

Terry Burrows & Daniel MillerMute – A Visual Document ... Book
Thames & Hudson, 2017. New Copy ... $31.99 45.00
Mute Records was one of the most striking British labels of the post-punk years – second maybe only to Factory Records for the way it mixed art and design to package modern music – a legacy that began with the label's very first 45, and continued through countless great albums and singles for years to come! This beautiful volume is an especially strong look at the first decade or so of Mute – and showcases the way it found new styles to present its music – a rich legacy of sounds from Nick Cave, Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Fad Gadget, Nitzer Ebb, Einsturzende Neubauten, and many others – a mode that continued even after Mute had found bigger fame in the mainstream, and started to issue some of its productions on major labels. The book traces hundreds of images, and even includes label scans, mock-ups, and other related work – along with a complete representation of the label's albums too. This hardcover edition is full color throughout, over 300 pages, and a great companion to the classic music of Mute! Book

East Wind/Universal (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
Mighty nice work from singer Ann Burton – one of those jazz vocalists who was almost a secret star in the 70s – continuing a legacy of earlier fame, but through a series of overseas recordings and small label dates that really let her grow creatively and open up fresh territory as an artist! The set features accompaniment from a shifting lineup of Japanese jazz players – and includes some especially nice tenor and flute from Akira Miyazwa, plus piano from Masahiko Satoh and Toshihiko Ogawa, guitar from Sadanori Nakamure, and bass from Kunimitsu Inaba – an especially great player whose round, warm tone really shapes the record. Titles include "Yesterday & Yesterdays", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "May I Come In", "Love Is A Necessary Evil", "By Myself Alone", and "That Old Feeling". CD features two bonus tracks – "Oh What A Shame" and "Nice To be Back Again". CD

Otis ClayOnly Way Is Up ... LP
Blues R&B, 1982. Near Mint- ... $29.99
Later work from Otis Clay, but also one of his greatest albums ever! The record features him with some fuller arrangements than usual – in less of a bluesy mode than during the Hi years, with a smooth sound that really brings out a whole new side of his style. The set was recorded in Chicago for the Japanese market – and the arrangements are by Benjamin Wright, Bill McFarland, and Clay himself. Includes the massive groover "The Only Way Is Up", an anthemic modern dancefloor number that later yielded a bit hit for Yazz – plus the tracks "Cheatin In The Next Room", "All I Need Is You", "Special Kind Of Love", "Messin With My Mind", "Turn Back The Hands Of Time", and "Check It Out". A record that's definitely got plenty of layers, as Khalab works with a different collaborator on just about every track – which makes for a nicely varied vibe throughout the album! Tunes are often upbeat, but more complicated than clubby – layered with a nice sense of sound that has the collaborators' contributions shifting through subtle sonic patterns as the record moves on – in a lineup that includes "Romantic Loco" with Tenderlonious, "Drone Ra" with Yazz Ahmed & Alessi Obino, "Acid Vaccine" with Clap Clap, "Layers" with Joshua Idehan, "Mental Coach" with Gabin Dabire, "Female Side" with Tommaso Cappellato, and "Tunnel Of Jealousy" with Lady Blue Eyes. Hideo ShirakiHideo Shiraki (1958) (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
King/Think (Japan), 1958. Used ... $34.99
A late 50s stormer from Japanese drummer Hideo Shiraki – caught here at a great point in his early career! The album's got a bit more of a swing-based feel than some of Shiraki's later sides – a bit more Verve-like energy than Blue Note style – which is a-ok with us, because the sound of the set is so great! But even more than Hideo's work on drums, the real star of the album is almost saxophonist Akira Miyazawa – who gets in some great solo moments on nearly every track, blowing tenor with a great sense of soul that really lights up the record and makes things shine. Titles include "The Man I Love", "Moritat", "Night In Tunisia", "Drum Boogie", "Around The World", and "I Got Rhythm". CD

Blue Note, 2022. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 39.99
Although Blue Note is probably one of the most iconic record labels on the planet, the company's also done a great job of reinventing itself as the years go on – always showing that they've still got an ear for the same sort of new talent that made Blue Note so important back in the day! This time around, the label's following a bit of the spirit of their previous Re:Imagined set, in that they're also working with a fair bit of young artists from the UK scene – but the set list is also maybe a bit less slavish to hits from the Blue Note catalog, which really opens up the overall sound of the record with a mix of very different vocal and instrumental contributions! As before, the scope is great, and the package is a double-length one – with titles that include "Fort Worth" by Binker Golding, "It" by Yazz Ahmed, "Through The Noise" by Nubiyan Twist, "Don't Know Why" by Partheope, "Morning Side Of Love" by Ego Ella May, "Green With Envy" by Oscar Jerome & Oscar #Worldpeace, "Lost" by Daniel Casimir with Ria Moran, "Epistrophy" by Theon Cross, "Feel Like Making Love" by Kay Young, "Harvest Moon" by Maya Delilah, "Infant Eyes" by Reuben James, and "Where Are We Going" by Venna & Marco. VariousJ Jazz 2 – Deep Modern Jazz From Japan 1969 to 1983 (3LP set) ... LP
BBE (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $34.99 48.99
An incredible trip through the 70s Japanese jazz scene – a second volume of J Jazz that's even bigger and better than the first – with unknown gems from private presses, indie labels, and rarities from the Japanese branches of the major labels, too! Compilers Tony Higgins & Mike Peden (who are both also responsible for the nicely done notes) follow through on all of the things we loved about the first J Jazz compilation, but improve on it by going bigger and digging deeper. The majority of the tracks were recorded from 1969 through the late 70s – with a few recorded in later years – and all have a wonderful way of being open to the stylistic inventions of the time without getting hung up on trends. So while there's some fusiony funk and electric piano, there's plenty of acoustic instrumentation and timelessly inventive material. BBE has outdone themselves on this excellent collection – and the titles include "Dragon Dance" by Makoto Terashita & Harold Land, "Daguri" by Kohsuke Mine Quintet, "Distant Thunder" by Mabumi Yamguchi Quartet, "Animal Garden" by Miyasaka + 5, "Mother Of The Future" by Electro Keyboard Orchestra, "Serenade To A Dimly Lit Street" by Hiroshi Matsumoto/Hideo Ichikawa Quartet, "Teru-Teru Bozu" (Black Keys) by Teru Sakamoto Trio, "Little Giant" by Nobuo & Sharps & Flats, "Brown Trout" by Akira Miyazawa and more. 14 tracks on 3LPs. Toshiba/Universal (Japan), 1961. New Copy ... $44.99 49.99
All-star jazz from the Japanese scene of the early 60s – a record that's almost in the Verve Records jam session or JATP style – as it features some of the greatest players on the Japanese scene of the time, coming together on some really long tracks that take off in a beautiful way! The set features two cuts, each taking up a side of the record – and that leaves plenty of room for long solo contributions from musicians who include Sadao Watanabe on alto, Akira Miyazawa on tenor, Norio Maeda on piano, Takeshi Inomata on drums, Shungo Sawada on guitar, and Akira Nakano on trumpet. Players are different on each side of the record – changing things up nicely, to present the range of new Japanese jazz voices that were making the start of the 60s such a key part of the scene – and the titles include extended takes on "Moanin" and "Walkin". VariousKaruizawa Music Inn Vol 2 – Modern Jazz Meeting ... LP
Toshiba/Universal (Japan), 1961. New Copy ... $24.99 49.99
A key showcase of some of the fantastic groups who were starting to shape the sound of jazz on the Japanese jazz scene at the start of the 60s –a set that's a nice contrast to the first volume in this series, which featured all of the different musicians jamming together! Here, leadership is the focus – as each number has the musicians showing of the way that they were moving Japanese instrumental music past some of the more mood-based styles that were still pretty dominant in the mainstream, and instead taking very strong lessons from the 50s American wave of players who revolutionized the sound of jazz with hardbop! Nearly every player here is at the start of their career, but about to unfurl music that would shape Japanese jazz for decades to come – and titles include "Late At Night" played by the combo of pianist Masao Yagi, "With A Feeling Of Love" played by tenorist Akira Miyazawa, "Four On Six" by guitarist Shungo Sawada, "For Singers Only" by pianist Norio Maeda, "What's Now" by pianist Keitaro Miho, and "Alone Together" by altoist Sadao Watanabe. ✨✧ Nduduzo MakhathiniModes Of Communication – Letters From The Underworlds ... CD
Blue Note, 2020. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really beautiful record, and one that's every bit as righteous as you might guess from its cover and title – maybe even more so, as there's a hugely collaborative energy to the whole record, a sense of group spirit that's not even hinted at on the front! Nududuzo Makhathini is listed as the "composer and conceptualizer" on most tracks – and that's a great way of putting it, as there's definitely a core concept to most of the record – which is then taken up by an array of other musicians and singers, and lifted up with energy that maybe makes the whole thing one of the most spiritual releases on Blue Note since the days of Eddie Gale! Makhathini plays piano, and other musicians include Logan Richardson on alto, LInda Sikhakane on tenor, Ndabo Zulu on trumpet, and Ayanda Sikade on drums – used in a shifting lineup with other players, and joined by voices on some tracks – so that the record has this amazing blend of spiritual and South African jazz modes, with some traces of contemporary soul. A wonderfully uplifting record – with titles that include "Beneath The Earth", "Saziwa Nguwe", "On The Other Side", "Shine", "Indawu", "Umlotha", "Unyazi", and "Saziwa Nguwe". CD

Great 70s work from Japanese pianist Masao Yagui – a set that's got some fusion elements, but which also holds onto some of his earlier modern energies as well! The lineup here is relatively large – with Yagui on piano and keyboards, plus Akira Miyazawa on tenor, Shigeo Suziki on alto, Shin Kazuhara on trumpet, and Kiyoshi Sugimoto on guitar – mostly moving in these sharp lines that almost get a bit funky, but occasionally laying back into these mellower moments that are even more soulful! A wonderfully wide-ranging look at the more unique aspects of Japanese jazz from the 60s onward – a set that mixes together spiritual tracks, bossa nova, and some surprisingly soulful tracks too – all from records that were only ever issued in Japan! If you've heard the great first volume, you'll know what to expect here – but we can also say that the scope of work here might even be better, and there's some great surprises along the way – especially on cuts that show the way these Japanese jazz musicians have taken some inspiration from American music, then really run far in their own new directions with the work. Amazing early work from Paul Horn – recorded way before he got all noodly, and started walking around in pyramids and stuff! The album captures Horn at the height of his early brilliance – interested in world rhythms, especially Indian, and showing a real penchant for a modal groove. He's working here on alto and flute, and grooving incredibly well with a group that includes Paul Moer on piano, Emil Richards on vibes, and the great Jimmy Bond on bass – all pulsating with a great deal of energy, and creating these catchy little tunes that dip, turn, dip, and allow Horn to really take off on his solos. The set's one of the richest collections done by Yazoo during their crucial reissue period – and features late 20s material from the group that often (but not always) featured jug work in the rhythm, plus bluesy vocals from Will Shade, Minnie Wallace, Charlie Nickerson, Hattie Hart, and others – as well as guitar, harmonica, and kazoo. The lineup changes from track to track, documented well in the notes – and titles include "Memphis Yo Yo Blues", "Gator Wobble", "I'll See You In The Spring When The Birds Begin To Sing", "Insane Crazy Blues", "On The Road Again", and "Fourth Street Mess Around". ✨✧ Henry ThomasTexas Worried Blues – Complete Recorded Works – 1927 to 1929 ... CD
Yazoo, Late 20s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The complete recordings of East Texas bluesman Henry Thomas – only 23 titles in all, but quite a legacy to leave behind! Thomas was a real itinerant bluesman in the old school mode – born in the 19th century, and known for travelling up and down railroad lines, where he would share and develop his songs. Given that legacy, the approach here is even more folksy than other mainstream blues of the time – acoustic guitar, vocals, and a bit of penny whistle too – a really compelling combination of modes that shows the easy genre crossings that would take place in the earliest years of the genre. The double-length set features great notes on Thomas' obscure career – and titles include "Bob McKinney", "Cottonfield Blues", "The Little Red Caboose", "Fishing Blues", "Old Country Stomp", "Lovin Babe", "Charmin Betsy", and "Texas Worried Blues". ✨✧ VariousJ Jazz 2 – Deep Modern Jazz From Japan 1969 to 1983 (with bonus track) ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
BBE has outdone themselves on this excellent collection – and titles include "Dragon Dance" by Makoto Terashita & Harold Land, "Daguri" by Kohsuke Mine Quintet, "Distant Thunder" by Mabumi Yamguchi Quartet, "Animal Garden" by Miyasaka + 5, "Mother Of The Future" by Electro Keyboard Orchestra, "Serenade To A Dimly Lit Street" by Hiroshi Matsumoto/Hideo Ichikawa Quartet, "Teru-Teru Bozu" (Black Keys) by Teru Sakamoto Trio, "Little Giant" by Nobuo & Sharps & Flats, "Brown Trout" by Akira Miyazawa and more – plus the CD bonus track "Original Bill" by Koichi Matsukaze Trio. 15 tracks on 2CDs. King (Japan), 1957. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A jazz message from late 50s Tokyo – loud, proud, and proof that the Japanese scene was really coming into its own! The set's awash in great bop and swing performances from the postwar years – exclusive tracks to this set, played by four different groups that include Akira Miyazawa on tenor, Shungo Sawada on guitar, and Eiji Kitamura on clarinet – all players that work with other key jazzmen of the Tokyo scene at the time, on sharp-edged tracks that include "An Instant Of The Life", "Funny Bone", "Wherever I Go", "Hello Mr Basie", "Flashing", and "Jog". ✨✧ Ann BurtonBy Myself Alone ... LP
Inner City, 1974. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Hideo ShirakiHideo Shiraki (1958) ... CD
King (Japan), 1958. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
CD

Night Time Stories (UK), 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A London record that bristles strongly with all the best sorts of criss-crossing cultural energy that's been taking place on the city's scene over the past decade or so – jazz mixing with new production modes, soulful vocals reaching cosmic sonic territory, and rhythms unlocked from more familiar modes – all guided strongly by producer Ash Walker in the lead! Walker works plenty as a DJ too, and there's almost a party-like sense of collaboration taking place on the record – as Ash opens the door to a wonderful range of guests – including Yazz Ahmed, Oscar Jerome, Lou Rhodes, Amp Fiddler, Ebi Soda, Sly5thAve, Joe Armon-Jones, and others – coming together in a record that cascades effortlessly from sound to sound, track to track! That's hokum, not hokey – defined in the notes as "a trite, pornographic ditty"! And while the stuff here may be a bit tamer than the triple X features you'll find in your local video store, the collection offers up some surprisingly risque themes from blues 78s of the late 20s and early 30s – all put together with the usual great Yazoo packaging, right down to the Robert Crumb image on the cover. Titles include "Banana Man Blues" by Memphis Minnie, "Please Warm My Weiner" by Bo Carter, "Darktown Gambling" by Robert & Charlie Hicks, "Ham Fatchet Blues" by Buddie Burton, "You Put It In I'll Take It Out" by Papa Charlie Jackson, and "The Coldest Stuff In Town" by Whistling Bob Howe & Frankie Griggs.
