Wadada Leo SmithRed Chrysanthemums – Live 1977 ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1977. New Copy ... $11.99
An unreleased set of solo performances from trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith – one that we'd rank right up there with his most adventurous work of the 70s! Smith comes across wonderfully on the record – full of soul and imagination, and easily as impressive on his solo instruments as scenemate Roscoe Mitchell could be in a similar setting – always moving around with thoughtful shifts in timing and purpose, in ways that always make the whole performance feel very organic, especially as Smith moves between other instruments that include flute, percussion, gongs, and steelophone. Titles include "Jupiter's Astro Waves", "Blue Green Gardens Of The Indigenous People", and "Pan Sonic Fire Rhythms/Red Chrysanthemums/Dark Purple Night On Crater Lake With A Clear View Of Saturn's Rings & Moons". ✨✧ Wadada Leo SmithNajwa ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2017. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wadada Leo Smith is really on fire here – on a record that feels a lot more like something from the early 80s underground than some of his earlier work – from the lineup of performers, right down to the overall sound of the set! The group's very heavy on guitars – and features work from Michael Gregory Jackson, Henry Kaiser, Brandon Ross, and Lamar Smith on the instrument – often criss-crossing and weaving these beautiful sonic textures – powerful, but never too noisy, and augmented beautifully by some surprisingly thoughtful bass work by Bill Laswell – whose at his most subtle and collaborative here. The rest of the lineup features Pheeroan AkLaff on drums and Adam Rudolph on piano – and Wadada's trumpet really soars to the skies on the longer tracks, which include "Ornette Coleman's Harmelodic Sonic Hierographic Forms – A Resonance Change In The Millenium", "Ronald Shannon Jackson – The Master Of Symphonic Drumming & Multi-Sonic Rhythms Inscriptions Of A Rare Beauty", and "Ohnedaruth John Coltrane – The Master Of Kosmic Music & His Spirituality In A Love Supreme". ✨✧ Wadada Leo SmithSolo – Reflections & Meditations On Monk ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith never fails to blow us away – and even though he's captured our ear with recent higher-concept projects or other group work, he sounds equally mindblowing here in a completely solo setting! As you'd guess from the title, the set's based around the musical vision of Thelonious Monk – territory not often explored on solo trumpet, and handled beautifully here by Smith – both on his long extrapolations based on Monk's compositions, and on his own tunes dedicated to Monk – which are these bold, brilliant paintings in sound that the legendary pianist would have been proud to hear. We're not sure what's in the water over at Smith's house, but he's really had this amazing blossom of fresh creativity in recent years – as you'll hear on his compositions here, entitled "Monk & His Five Point Ring At The Five Spot Cafe", "Monk & Bud Powell At Shea Stadium", and "Adagio Monkishness – A Cinematic Vision Of Monk Playing Solo" – alongside versions of Monk tunes that include "Ruby My Dear", "Reflections", "Round Midnight", and "Crepuscule With Nellie". ✨✧ Wadada Leo SmithAmerica's National Parks ... CD
Cuneiform, 2016. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
An incredibly ambitious work from trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith – an extended piece that's dedicated to the national park system in America, but which is also almost a musical "conversation" with that system too – one that seeks to expand and transform the landscape through a variety of different musical themes! Smith isn't just hugging trees at Yellowstone and Yosemite – and instead, passages of the work are influenced by New Orleans, the Mississippi River, and the work of Eileen Jackson Southern – influences that take the whole proceedings far past the familiar, and into the rich sonic territory we've come to expect from Wadada. Yet the sound here is maybe even more richly textured than on any of Smith's recent recordings – with plenty of dark tones and shapes delivered by the Golden Quintet lineup that includes Anthony Davis on piano, Ashley Walters on cello, John Lindberg on bass, and Pheeroan Aklaff on drums. Titles include "New Orleans The National Culture Park 1718", "Yellowstone The First National Park & The Spirit Of America", "Sequioa Kings Canyon National Park", "Eileen Jackson Southern 1920 to 2002 – A Literary National Park", and "Yosemite – The Glaciers, The Falls, The Wells, & The Valley Of Goodwill 1890". ✨✧ Wadada Leo SmithGreat Lakes Suite ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2015. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith works here with a hell of a lineup – Henry Threadgill on alto and flutes, John Lindberg on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – all soaring free on a double-length set of work dedicated to the great lakes! Despite the "suite" in the title, the work feels very loose and free – much more improvised than compositional – which is an especially nice setting for the reedwork of Threadgill, who somehow seems even more expressive than usual. DeJohnette is great too – and the album's a great reminder that he can still play with a hell of an edge, but in ways that also can have the soulfulness of his roots – and maybe not some of the more "arch" styles of some of his other recent work. Smith adds an extra lake to the lineup for the recording – and titles include "Lake Michigan", "Lake Ontario", "Lake Superior", "Lake Huron", "Lake Erie", and "Lake St Clair". CD
