✨✧ OutkastIdlewild ... LP
LaFace/Zomba, 2006. New Copy 3LPs ... Out Of Stock
The new album from Outkast and the soundtrack to their film Idlewild! Outkast has been daring haters for years to pounce at will – and they really take that approach to the next level by making what is far and away their oddest project in midst of the most scrutiny they will probably ever receive. We're lacking a bit of perspective in that we haven't seen the movie – but the best stuff probably makes it worth picking up. Idlewild continues the tag team style of Speakerboxx/Love Below in that the duo rarely appear together on the same tracks. The single "Mighty O" is the most notable expection, in that both rappers do their thing on it – and 3000 is actually rapping! The rest of the album, surprisingly, has a fairly coherent flow – with little touches of the 1930s vibe and atmosphere ( the setting of the film) – as envisioned by forward looking hip hoppers. It's a daring set of tracks with strong moments – and lots of additional singing by Sleepy Brown and others. Tracks include "Mighty O", "Peaches" feat Sleepy Brown & Scar, "Idlewild Blue (Don'tchu Worry 'Bout Me", "N2U" feat Khujo Goodie, "Morris Brown" feat Scar & Sleepy Brown, "Chronomentrophobia", "The Train" feat Sleep Brown & Scar, "Life Is Like A Musical", "Hollywood Divorce" feat Lil' Wayne & Snoop Dogg, "Buggface", "PJ & Rooster", "Greatest Show On Earth" feat Macy Gray. "When I Look In Your Eyes", "Dyin' To Live" and "A Bad Note". LP, Vinyl record album

Timeless All StarsIt's Timeless ... CD
Timeless/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1982. New Copy ... $16.99
A brilliant assemblage of players – working here under the Timeless All Stars tag, because they'd all recorded for the label – but held together much more deeply through a rich tradition of west coast soul jazz! The team of Harold Land and Bobby Hutcherson are wonderfully united for the session – working with Curtis Fuller on trombone, Cedar Walton on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – all to carve out longer tracks that sparkle with the best open feeling of the sound that Land and Hutcherson first put down together at the end of the 60s. There's a sense of warmth and good spirit to the recording – but not of the type that dampens the energies of the players – as the best tracks on the record have a searing, searching feel that's pretty darn surprising for such an all-star session! Titles include "Clockwise", "Highway One", "Arabia", "Stella By Starlight", and "My Foolish Heart". CD

✨✧ Clark Terry & Bob BrookmeyerGingerbread Men (Jazz Heritage) ... CD
Mainstream/Jazz Heritage, 1966. Used ... $7.99
The team of Clark Terry & Bob Brookmeyer shouldn't work so well together – but on 60s classics like this they really gel together nicely – and although Terry's always been an optimist, and Brookmeyer's had a history as a modernist, the pair cut some great records together! This set's one of the best of a short run the Terry/Brookmeyer group cut for Mainstream in the mid 60s – a quintet session with Hank Jones on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Dave Bailey on drums – all players creative enough to match the playful spirit of the leaders, muting their rhythms one minute, and grooving them up the next! The mix of Terry's flugelhorn and Brookmeyer's trombone is especially great – a breathy approach to the horn parts that still swings hard, but with a fluid grace that's more pulsating than punctuating. Titles include a great version of Gary McFarland's "Milo's Other Samba", Jimmy Heath's "Gingerbread Boy", and the titles "Haig & Haig", "My Gal", "Naptown", and "Morning Mist". CD

Steve DitkoOuter Limits – The Steve Ditko Archives Vol 6 (hardcover) ... Book
Fantagraphics, 2016. New Copy ... $9.99 39.99
The genius of Steve Ditko knows no bounds – and although the comic genius is best known for his later work on Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and countless other classics – his early material is also pretty darn amazing! This excellent volume collects a whole host of rare sci-fi stories that Steve penned for the Charlton company in the early days of his career, plus a few horror titles too – all done right during the same period that Ditko was teaming up with Stan Lee in the pre-Marvel years of comics – using his flair for an amazing image to bring a fantastic sense of life to tales of the mysterious and unexplored! The Ditko style is fully-formed by this point in his career – and the book is full of beautiful and overlooked stories that are a great complement to his better-known work at Marvel. All presented in full color, with great resolution – over 200 pages of non-stop, late 50s comics! Book

Phyllis HymanYou Know How To Love Me (with bonus track) ... CD
Arista/BMG Heritage, 1979. Used ... $4.99
A classic 1979 album from Phyllis Hyman! Hyman was one of the few female singers who started in the pre-disco years and managed to move through the disco years with a good groove – but never get totally swamped by the production styles of the day. She stuck close to her roots as a jazzy soul singer, and produced great albums like this – which mixed pop club grooves with more sophisticated arrangements, handled very well here by the production team of Reggie Lucas and James Mtume. Titles include the stormer "You Know How To Love Me", plus "Some Way", "Under Your Spell", "But I Love You", and "Give A Little More" – plus the previously unreleased "You're The One". CD

Shotaro MatsumotoWalearic Disc Guide ... Book
P-Vine (Japan), 2019. New Copy ... $29.99
One of the most unusual disc guides we've ever seen – a book that coins its own genre of music, Walearic – then finds a whole host of vintage records that fall under that new category! The book is filled with listings of rare records from Japan – music in many styles, and which represent the real flowering of Japanese musical creativity in the 70s and 80s – a time when the pressing plants were going at full steam, and the nation was really crafting its own amazing legacy in music! As with other Japanese books of this nature, most of the text is not in English – but the all-color volume does feature page after page of record covers, titles, dates, artist, and label information – hundreds of listings for records that will definitely expand your crate digging efforts in years to come. The book is divided up into chapters that focus on the original styles of the records – with many entries in chapters that include "Psychedelic/Avant Garde", "Easy Listening/Mood Music", "New Wave", "Disco/Fusion", and "OST/Anime" – almost 200 pages of listings, with 4 records to a page, all in color – which makes for a heck of a lot of new records to discover! ✨✧ Bo Donaldson & The Heywoods70s Classic Hits ... CD
Sunset Blvd, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
As you can guess by their image on the cover, Bo Donaldson & The Heywoods were hardly the stuff of cutting-edge rock in the 70s – but they certainly made for some great pop classics during the glory days of AM Radio! The cover photo is old, but this set is actually new – a reformed version of the group, working in a surprisingly faithful studio setting – to recapture the pristine pop glory of their hits, and some other classics from the 70s! In fact, if we hadn't dipped into the notes, we'd be tempted to say that all the work here is vintage – which is our tip of the hat to the production team behind the record – who really do a great job with tunes that include "Billy Don't Be A Hero", "Sad Eyes", "Who Do You Think You Are", "Sky High", "Hooked On A Feeling", "Wildflower", "Hello It's Me", and "Saturday Night". ✨✧ Polly NilesSunshine In My Rainy Day Mind (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Ember/Grapefruit (UK), 1970. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
An unreleased album from singer Polly Niles – a unique talent with a style that fits in strongly with some of the rising tide of female vocalists rising up at the start of the 70s – an elite group that might include Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, and Carole King! Polly's much more obscure than both, of course, but has similar roots – an American singer with experience in folk music, turning towards different modes at the end of the 60s – recording here for the British Ember label, who did a really great job with production, but then never managed to get the record past test pressing stage! Niles has a voice that contains all the earnestness of a folk singer, but none of the more cloying qualities – more mature, and nicely tuned through a range of material from Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, John Barry, Stephen Stills, and even the team of Goffin and King. Titles include "Bang Bang", "Since I Lost You Baby", "The Milk Of The Tree", "Get High On Jesus", "I Am A Child", and "East Virginia". 2CD set also features an insane number of bonus tracks – session tracks and single mixes, with 24 more titles in all – plus very detailed notes on Polly's special story. Kyle Dixon & Michael SteinStranger Things Vol 1 ... CD
Lakeshore, 2016. Used ... $8.99
Fantastic soundtrack work for the Stranger Things series from Netflix – a narrative set in the early 80s, and scored here with a sound that really gets that era right! This isn't schlocky 80s keyboard work, nor some sort of easy retro motif – and instead, the team of Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein go for sort of the coolest moods and styles that were being used in film scores during the time – especially the spare keyboards and careful electronics that were just right for a sci-fi or sophisticated horror story! The keyboards all feel very vintage, but not in an "easy" way – and titles on this first volume include "Lay Z Boy", "Nancy & Barb", "Kids", "Hawkins", "The Upside Down", "Lamps", "Fresh Blood", "Photos In The Woods", and "Hanging Lights". Wes MontgomeryIncredible Jazz Guitar Of Wes Montgomery ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1960. Used ... $3.99
They're not kidding with the title of this one – because although the record was only Wes Montgomery's second album as a leader, he was already making plenty of waves with the sound of his guitar! The session lines Wes up with the very tight rhythm team of Tommy Flanagan on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Albert Heath on drums – all of whom lay back and mostly let Wes take center stage – sparkling on a number of original tunes that include "West Coast Blues", "Mister Walker", and "D Natural Blues". Other tracks include a great fast take on Sonny Rollins' "Airegin", plus "In Your Own Sweet Way" and "Polka Dots & Moonbeams". CD

Stefano Torossi & Giovanni TomassoEchoing America (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Cometa (Italy), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A record that definitely lives up to its title – an obscure Italian sound library session that blends instrumental touches that evoke an America at the start of the 70s with some of the hipper, deeper currents you'd expect from the team of Stefano Torossi and Giovanni Tomasso! There's plenty of expected sound library funk in the mix here – but there's also bits of banjo, harmonica, and acoustic guitar – all used sparely, but in a way that paints "America" on some of the groovier cuts here – in a way that makes for one of the most unique sound library sessions we've ever heard! Plus, the book comes with some nicely hokey notes about our nation, and some nice vintage photos – including images of a hippie wrapped in a flag in a hammock, and a confederate soldier loading a canon. Titles include "Black Power", "Policeman", "Fake It", "Six Miles From Blackstook", "Slateridge Sunday Breakdown", "Harlem Jungle", and "Metropolis". LP, Vinyl record album

Porter Wagoner & Dolly PartonOnce More/Two Of A Kind/The Right Combination Burning The Midnight Oil/Together Always ... CD
RCA/BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99
Four classic RCA albums from the team of Porter Wagoner & Dolly Parton – all brought together in a single set! Once More is a pivotal moment in the duo career of Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton – both solo singers who'd worked together on earlier records, but really seemed to hit their stride around the time of this set! Both Porter and Dolly gel together perfectly – often singing together, not trading back and forth as much – in ways that only make the lyrics of the songs resonate more strongly. Titles include "I Know You're Married But I Love You Still", "Daddy Was An Old Time Preacher Man", "A Good Understanding", "Let's Live For Tonight", "Once More", "Fight & Scratch", and the tear-jerker "Ragged Angel". Two Of A Kind is a great pairing of Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton – one an aging country singer, yet still in his prime – the other a soon-to-be superstar, getting her youth balanced out a bit more by the presence of Porter! The tunes here are the perfect sort of music for the pair to work together – some songs that have separate parts that give each singer a distinct character – others harmonized together in a mighty nice way. Dolly wrote a fair bit of material for the set, and Porter had a hand in a few too – and titles include "Oh The Pain Of Loving You", "Possum Holler", "The Flame", "The Fighting Kind", "Two Of A Kind", "There'll Be Love", "Is It Real", and "Curse Of The Wild Weed Flower". On the next album, Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton are definitely the Right Combination – singing here with a chemistry that not only reflects Dolly's years on stage with Porter, but which also echoes some of the tension of their relationship backstage! The tunes are a mix of originals – some by Wagoner, some by Parton – plus a few other well-chosen numbers – all of which expand their duo style nicely, marking it as way more than just some record company attempt to cash in by bringing two stars together! Titles include "More Than Words Can Tell", "The Right Combination", "Her & The Car & The Mobile Home", "Burning The Midnight Oil", "On & On", and "The Fog Has Lifted". The title of Together Always is maybe a bit un-prophetic – given that a few years later, Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton would hardly be together – but the record's a great one from that wonderful stretch when the pair could really make magic singing together on record! The tunes are all original numbers – some by Dolly, some by Porter – new material that makes the album every bit as strong as solo efforts by either singer, and which show that these RCA duo sessions weren't just filler material in the catalog! Titles include "Love's All Over", "Take Away", "Lost Forever In Your Kiss", "Looking Down", "Poor Folks Town", "Ten Four Over & Out", and "You & Me Her & Him". CD

✨✧ VariousPurple Snow – Forecasting the Minneapolis Sound (4LPs with book) ... LP
Numero, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 4 LPs ... $56.99 84.98
The amazing prequel to the big wave of funk and soul that exploded from the Minneapolis scene at the end of the 70s – early sounds that really point the way towards later grooves from folks like Prince, Alexander O'Neal, Andre Cymone, and the team of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis! The massive package is one of the best-ever sets from the Numero Group – not just a brilliant collection of music, but a rich book-like presentation of this important time in the Twin Cities scene – with a huge booklet of notes, memories, and loads of vintage photos! The whole thing's like taking the quality of Numero's books and mixing it with the focus of their best compilations – and the heavy package is filled with loads and loads of gems that really re-map the whole rise to glory of some of the bigger names of the time. You'll hear sounds here by folks who later recorded under more famous labels, and other sublime cuts by groups who never fully got their due at the time – such as the wonderful Haze, a group we've always loved. Instrumentation is heavy on keyboards and bass – but used in ways that are often a bit warmer and more spontaneous than the electric funk of later Minneapolis years – tied in more strongly to the sound of the underground in other American cities. Titles include "Get It On" by Prophets Of Peace, "I Love You" by Herman Jones, "Taste Of Love" by Aura, "Expense" by Cohesion, "It's The Things That You Do" by Flyte Tyme, "Higher" by Lewis Connection, "I Do Love My Lady" by Haze, "Stone Lover" by Music Love & Funk, "Together" by Rockie Robbins, "Do You Dare" by Alexander O'Neal, "I've Got My Eyes On You" by The Girls, "Can You Deal With It" by Quiet Storm, "Should I Or Should I Not" by Sue Ann Carwell, "No One Else Can Do It To Me Baby" by Mind & Matter, and "Oh Lover" by Orville Shannon. VariousUltra High Frequencies – The Chicago Party (with DVD) ... CD
Numero, Early 80s. New Copy CD & DVD ... $12.99 19.98
A funky soul compilation, and a sweet TV show as well – presented here in an ultra-cool collection that offers both audio and video work from this short-lived Chicago dance show! The Chicago Party was a very local UHF program in the Windy City – one that was kind of a homegrown version of Soul Train, but turned towards the grooviest styles of the post-disco years – including boogie, 80s groove, and some tight indie club modes – all of which are featured on this sweet little compilation! The folks at Numero Group have teamed with Chicago historian Jake Austen for this very special package – which pulls together 16 musical tracks, then includes a DVD with 100 minutes of video footage from the 23 episodes of the show, mixed together in one extended program! Musically, the collection works as a great snapshot of the Chicago soul underground right before house music came into play – and titles include "Pull Up" by Universal Togetherness Band, "The Chicago Party Theme" by Jesus Wayne, "Think" by Rahmlee, "Garden Of Eve" by Yvonne Gage, "Girl You're Too Cool" by Magnum Force, "Into New Dimensions" by IND, "Freedom Sweet Freedom" by Ken Allison, "Blow Me Away" by MC2, and "Burning UP" by Donnell Pitman.
