The first Motown full length record by the Spinners – Original Spinners from '67 – followed by an impeccably well-chosen collection of bonus material! It's excellent stuff – an overlooked album with some very hard to find Motown work by this early version of the legendary Spinners – with lead vocals by Bobby Smith and Edgar Edwards. The tracks have a mixture of sweet and raw harmonies – crafted with an elegantly soulful sound that would later take the group way over the top during the 70s, and which here sounds sublime next to some of the group's Motown contemporaries! The first 12 tracks on this excellent Kent compilation are the Original Spinners tracklist – including "Sweet Thing", "I Cross My Heart", "I'll Always Love You", "Truly Yours", "Like A Good Man Should", "For All We Know", "How Can I", "It Hurts To Be In Love", "Nobody Else But You", "Where Is That Girl", "Tomorrow May Never Come" and "That's What Girls Are Made For". Most of the 14 bonus tracks are previously unreleased masters – revelatory stuff from earlier in the 60s – formative, yet beautifully realized recordings with productions by Harvey Fuqua and Ivy Joe Hunter! A tremendous collection of early work by The Spinners – their sublime second album for Motown, plus 13 additional bonus tracks, most of which appear here for the first time ever! The core of the set is the 2nd Time Around album – pre-Philly magic from The Spinners – a wonderful early album recorded for Motown – done with a heady Detroit sound that's quite different than their later work in the 70s! The album already has the group sounding amazing on the harmonic tip – definitely a cut above the groups that came before them – with that brilliant Spinners ability to harmonize heavily while still hitting a groove! Arrangements are by Paul Riser, Wade Marcus, and David Van DePitte – all of whom keep things full, but never overblown – presenting music with a perfect polish for the group, but in quite different ways than the later Philly groove. Titles include the classic original version of "It's a Shame", plus "My Lady Love", "Souly Ghost", "Ooh Child", "In My Diary", "My Whole World Ended", "I've Got To Find Myself A Brand New Baby", "Bad Bad Weather", and "Pay Them No Mind". The set has them stepping out of the tightly controlled studio sound of their Philly albums – still working with Thom Bell on production, but doing so in a freer sort of live setting. A number of tracks are taken in very open versions, and really extended out nicely – and there's also some good material on here that shows that the group's harmonies could work in just about any setting. Surprisingly great – a really excellent little album that shows that the group were as strong as a unit as they could be as part of a hit-making machine. One of the rarest soul records on Brunswick! This one was cut during the mid 70s – when the label was really having some rough times financially, but also was cutting some of its most groundbreaking soul work. The Directions are a tight harmony quintet – equipped, it appears, with their own band (The Directions Band) who give the group a nice rough soul sound. The vocal cuts on the record have sort of a Philly harmony style – with many uptempo numbers that are sort of a rougher version of work by Blue Magic or The Spinners. The instrumental tracks are smooth funk – with lots of tight keyboard work over heavy riffing and vamping, mostly in an uptempo vein. A soaring solo effort from the great Philippe Wynne – a vocalist who's probably best known for his hit 70s work with The Spinners, but one who also turns out to be a hell of talent on his own! Wynne's sweet raspy vocals click into place right from the start – stretching out over a host of Philly-styled arrangements that recall the backdrops he received with The Spinners, but with a much stronger focus on his lead – as often any backing vocals are just a female chorus back farther in the mix. Wynne really sparkles on the ballads – grabbing our hearts all over again – but the album also sports some great groovers too – of the sort that really benefit from the tight arrangements. Titles include the seminal "Think Of Your Thoughts As Children" – a really beautiful number – plus "Starting All Over", "Waiting On A Letter From Home", "Lisa", "Take Me As I Am", and "Like A Loser Needs A Winner". Although it would be easy to write these guys off as a cheapo product emblazoned with the Soul Train name to cash in on the fame of the TV show, the gang's actually a pretty decent harmony soul act, and they really benefit from strong Norman Harris production on this LP. The ensemble features 2 female vocalists and 3 male ones – and they have a sweet grooving style that's kind of in the same mode as The Spinners, but which also hints at some of the later LA harmony hits on the Solar label, which is no surprise, since Solar owner Dick Griffey's involved in the project as executive producer. Philly soul arrangements abound – by Harris, Ronnie Baker, or Bobby Martin – and tracks include "That Certain Way", "How Much Longer", "All My Life", and the "Soul Train Theme". Here it is, the mother of them all! The set's got 8CDs worth of killer soul, funk, and Rhythm & Blues – all culled from the rich history of the Atlantic records label, and lovingly put together with great notes and everything! Although this sort of set usually tends to be a bit simplistic, this box actually features a beautiful mix of tracks, lots of which are hard to get in any format. Plenty of Impact from this great Philly group – a soaring quartet who harmonize with some great Bobby Eli arrangements – at a level that shines as strongly as the best 70s work by Blue Magic or The Spinners! Impact never broke the big time as strongly, but they're a great group in the best 70s Philly mode – rooted in an older harmony style, but able to really take off with some sweet Sigma Sound styles – the sort of balance that few other groups managed to handle this well. The quartet features Damon Harris, who sang with the Temptations after Eddie Kendricks left in 1971 – and the group is a re-formation of The Young Vandals, who recorded briefly on T-Neck before Harris left for the Temps.
