Miles DavisBags Groove ... LP
Prestige, 1954. Near Mint- ... $24.99
Classic Miles Davis from that pivotal year of 1954 – featuring work from 2 different sessions, both of them great! The title track on the album is a key reading of "Bag's Groove", presented here in two versions, both recorded by a quintet that includes Milt "Bags" Jackson on vibes, Thelonious Monk on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – carving out the tune in a nicely modern idiom. The rest of the set features work by Miles in a quintet with Sonny Rollins and Horace Silver – again with support from Heath and Clarke – on tunes that include 2 versions of "But Not For Me", plus early recordings of Sonny Rollins' standards "Oleo", "Airegin", and "Doxy". LP, Vinyl record album
(Recent OJC pressing.)

Sonny RollinsSonny Rollins Vol 2 (RVG edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1957. Used ... $4.99
As classic as it comes for late 50s Blue Note – and a key meeting between Sonny Rollins and Thelonious Monk! The group on the set features Rollins and Monk with JJ Johnson, Paul Chambers, and Art Blakey – all of whom push things more in the direction of Blue Note's sound of the time, then Monk's own recordings of the period for Riverside. But the contrast of modes makes for a really startling sound – one that has Monk "monking" it up next to the straighter rhythm section, and bringing out some more modern tones in Rollins' tenor work. Horace Silver plays piano on part of the set as well – but still keeps things strong – and titles include "Why Don't I", "Wail March", "Misterioso", and "Reflections". CD
(Out of print 1999 RVG pressing.)

✨✧ Miles DavisMiles Ahead! (Prestige) ... LP
Prestige, 1953/1954. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A collection of numbers that Miles Davis recorded for Prestige in the 50s – both dates that were too short to be issued as 33 rpm LP albums by themselves, combined here into one full length record! The first two batches of material are from 1953 – one featuring Davis working in a sextet with Sonny Rollins and Charlie Parker, a nd the second with a quartet featuring Miles as the only horn– in a mode that steps off a bit from the boppishness of Davis' Blue Note recordings. Titles include 2 takes of "Serpent's Tooth", plus "Round Midnight", "Tune Up", "When Lights Are Low", "Smooch", "Miles Ahead" and "Compulsion". The rest of the set is another quartet side, with Horace Silver, Percy Heath and Art blakey, and numbers include "Four", "That Old Devil Moon" and "Blue Haze". LP, Vinyl record album
(Green label pressing. Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Miles DavisChronicle – The Complete Prestige Recordings 1951 to 1956 (8 CD set) ... CD
Prestige, Mid 50s. Used 8 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Wow! An incredible collection of seminal recordings from one of the most important figures in modern music! All of Miles' recordings from the Prestige label in one place, bound up in a well annotated box, and given a complete discography and lots of excellent photos. It's almost too much astounding jazz in one place! The list of sidemen and great LPs is almost too long to go over, but in addition to Miles' remarkable Cookin'/Relaxin'/Walkin'/Workin' sessions, there's all of the material issued as Bags' Groove, with the Modern Jazz Giants and loads more, and some of the stellar accompanists includes John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Charlie Parker, Lee Konitz, Red Garland, Thelonious Monk, Horace Silver, Milt Jackson, Paul Chambers, Art Blakey, Philly Joe Jones, and Max Roach, just to name a few. There's far too many tracks to list here, but there's takes of "Blue Room", "Conception", "Compulsion", "Miles Ahead", "Blue Haze", "Airegin", "Bag's Groove", "The Man I Love", "Green Haze", "Dr Jackle", "The Theme", "Trane's Blues", "'Round About Midnight", "Half Nelson", "My Funny Valentine" and loads more! A unique large group session from Art Pepper – one of his few this way as a leader, despite constant 50s presence as a sideman in big ensembles!
