✨✧ Joe SimonDrowning In the Sea Of Love ... CD
Spring/Southbound (UK), 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
A big one for Joe – and a marked shift after his southern soul recordings of earlier years. For this one, Joe got on the Philly train early, and hired Gamble & Huff to put the whole thing together with a tight smooth soul groove. The group's got greats like Norman Harris, Vince Montana, Lenny Pakula, and Ronnie Baker in the band – and tracks include "Drowning In the Sea Of Love", "Glad To Be Your Lover", "The Mirror Don't Lie", "Night Owl", "You Are Everything", and "Let Me Be The One". ✨✧ VariousSoul Of Spring Vol 2 ... CD
Spring/Kent (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great little follow-up to one of our favorite compilations ever from Kent Records – a motherlode of under-discovered soul from 70s powerhouse Spring Records! Spring is best known for its big hits with Joe Simon during the decade – but at the same time, the label also issued countless great singles by lesser-known artists – great little gems that run the gamut from southern soul to heavy funk, harmony soul, and disco – all with a quality level that matches or beats most of the other indies of the time! This wonderful set brings together some of the best from those years – and includes work issued not only on Spring, but also on the related Event and Posse labels – served up here as a whopping 24-track package that's supported by great notes on all the music. Titles include "It's So Good To Know" by Mayberry Movement, "I'm A Lover" by Vernon Brown, "You & I Go Good Together" by Garland Green, "Turn Yourself Around" by Clare Bathe, "Walk All Over God's Heaven" by Jackie Verdell, "Baby There's Nothing You Can Do" by The Joneses, "I'm On My Way" by Winfield Parker, "Ain't It Amazing" by Prince Harold, "Dry Bones In The Valley" by The Internationals, "Mr Everything" by Little Eva Harris, "It Takes Both Of Us" by Act One, "I'll See You In Hell First" by Phillip Mitchell, "Sherry Washington" by Ray Godfrey, and "Just Can't Say Hello" by Ronnie Walker. ✨✧ VariousFrom The Archive – Compiled By Volcov ... LP
BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s/2016. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The archive here appears to be Volcov's own record collection – but that's A-OK with us, because he's got some wonderfully groovy, wonderfully soulful, wonderfully under-discovered records he wants to share with us! The set's got a wicked blend of obscure tracks from decades back, and some contemporary cuts that share a similar vibe – music that's in a really special place between soul, jazz, and fusion – often with a cosmic vibe that gives the whole collection a very righteous sound! Liner notes are by Patrick Forge, who points out how obscure most of these tracks are, and what a special collection this is – and we definitely agree with his words, as most of these tracks are new to us, too. Titles include "Keep The Same Old Feeling" by Hot Quisine, "Do The Right Thing" by JOB, "Go (Chez Damien classic mix)" by The Urban Cru, "The Sound Of The Memory Of Many Living People" by Are & Be, "Arigo (Volcov edit)" by Manfredo Fest, "Turning On To Me" by Oneness Of Juju, "Footprints On The Sand (Shannon Harris Urbanicity reinterpretation)" by Chanan Hanspal, "Sophisticated Disco (Volcov edit)" by O'Donel Levy, "Simon's Melody" by The Antilles, "Part 4" by Shakazulu, and "Sun On My Back" by Bembe Segue. ✨✧ VariousStop & Listen Vol 4 – Patrick Forge ... CD
BBE (UK), 1998. Used ... Out Of Stock
Easily our favorite volume in this legendary series – a mindblowing batch of grooves put together by the godlike talents of Patrick Forge! Forge's work in many genres is well known – and the set's a mix of older funk, soul, jazz, and club numbers – plus a newer tracks that really maintain the classic vibe! There's plenty of treasures here that still haven't been reissued over the years – and titles include "Nothing's Changed" by Ten City, "Summer Bummer" by Crazy Penis, "Send In The Clowns" by Lorez Alexandria, "Motivation" by Atmosfear, "The Way We Live" by Raw Soul Express, "Berimbau De Ossanha" by Easydelics, "Guiro Electro" by Bobby Matos, "Spring Again" by Kevin Yost, "In Good Faith" by Norman Harris, "Straight Ahead" by Brooklyn Express, and "African Mailman" by Nina Simone.
