✨✧ Roy Hargrove's CrisolAfrodisia (Snowboy rmx, Raw Deal rmx, Habana version) ... 12-inch
Verve, 1997. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A nice single from Roy Hargrove's late 90s Afro-Cuban project Crisol, that featured Gary Bartz, Chucho Valdes, Changuito Quintana, Anga Diaz and El Negro Hernandez amongst others. The original "Habana mix" off the album is a nice piece of modern Latin jazz, and Snowboy does a good job of keeping things close to the Afro-Cuban roots while updating the sound for the dancefloor. 12-inch, Vinyl record
(In a stickered sleeve.)

Cyrille Aimee & FriendsLive At Smalls ... CD
Smalls Live, 2010. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
Singer Cyrille Aimee gets help from some great "friends" here – a tight quintet with Roy Hargrove on trumpet, Joel Frahm on tenor, and Spike Wilner on piano – really helping set up her vocals with a solid instrumental footing! Aimee's got a slight Billie Holiday quality to her phrasing – at least in the way her tone comes across – but the set's a mix of numbers that move way past traditional jazz vocal numbers, thanks partly to the way the group is swinging the rhythms, and bringing in a more contemporary vibe overall. Titles include a nice Wilner original – "East Village Inamorata" – plus "Yesterdays", "Que Reste Il", "I Was Beginning To See The Light", "When I Was A Child", "I Mean You", and "Stand By Me". CD

Gordon ChambersIntroducing Gordon Chambers ... CD
Chamber Music, 2004. Used ... $6.99
The emergence of a bright new talent on the soul music scene – and the debut of Gordon Chambers, better known to the world for his Grammy-winning songwriting work for other artists! Given the backdrop of his work with Anita Baker, Angie Stone, and others, Chambers has an ear for a tune that's really incredible – and steps out of the box with some stone winners that you may recognize from hit recordings, but which are redone here in a more personal, intimate, Neo Soul-styled mode. Guests on the set include Carl Thomas, Roy Hargrove, and Glenn Lewis – as well as singer Sara Devine, who duets with Chambers on the tune "Still In Love". Titles include "Never Fall In Love", "Touch You There", "I'll Miss You Most", "Always Be Proud", and "I Apologize". CD
(Out of print. Please note that the pages of the booklet are stuck together from water damage.)

✨✧ D'AngeloBlack Messiah ... LP
RCA, 2014. New Copy 2 LPs Gatefold ... $22.99 23.98
D'Angelo comes back after many years awol from the studio – and the result is a stunning new step in his music! We've loved the man from day one – and some folks could well say that he really helped reinvigorate soul back in the 90s – and all his time away from the studio has definitely been formative, as he comes back here with a righteous power that really blows away all his previous work! D'Angelo still loves the slow beat and mellow approach to funk – but he's also picked up a lot more fuzz and freak, too – righteous energy that more than lives up to the Black Messiah promised by the title, as do the lyrics. Instrumentation includes work by Questlove on drums, Roy Hargrove on trumpet, and Jesse Johnson on guitar – and the grooves have these tripping, slow-percolating elements that really give the lyrics a great sort of crackle. More than worth the wait – as you'll hear on titles that include "Back To The Future (parts 1 & 2)", "Sugah Daddy", "Really Love", "1000 Deaths", "Ain't That Easy", "Betray My Heart", "The Door", and "Till It's Done (Tutu)". ✨✧ Ralph MooreFurthermore ... CD
Landmark, 1990. Used ... $4.99
Ralph Moore's a player we always like to keep our ear on, and this album's no exception – a cracklingly soulful batch of tunes played with a razor-sharp quintet, all tied together beautifully with Moore's tenor on top! The date's great proof that rock-solid sessions could still be cut well after the classic Blue Note or Prestige Records years – and Moore's sense of timing and guidance easily matches that of many other tenor titans from previous years. And even more than some tenorists, who really see themselves as the star of the show, Ralph's got a sense of warmth and comradeship that always seems to bring out the best in his players – who on this date include Roy Hargrove on trumpet, Benny Green on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and either Victor Lewis or Kenny Washington on drums. Titles include "Pheobe's Samba", "Girl Talk", "Line D", "Monk's Dream", "310 Blues", and "Hopscotch". CD

Jowee OmicilLet's Bash ... CD
Jazz Village (France), 2017. New Copy ... $15.99 16.98
Sweet reeds and plenty of Fender Rhodes – a set that has Jowee Omicil blowing soprano sax, alto, flute, and clarinet – over a set of tunes that move along with a gentle sort of groove! The album's got a nice polish, but is also hipper than smooth jazz too – with some rootsier currents from time to time, and just the right sort of use of electric elements, so that they never overwhelm the acoustic sound of the leader. Songs are dedicated to Ornette Coleman, Tinariwen, Roy Hargrove, and others – and titles include "Sur Le Pont D'Avignon", "A Si Pare", "Love & Honesty", "Something Clear", "Twa Groove", and "Pipillita". Johnny O'NealIn The Moment ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2017. New Copy ... $16.99 17.98
Johnny O'Neal is a hell of a pianist, but here it's especially nice to hear him working with some horns – the trumpet of Roy Hargrove and tenor of Grant Stewart – who each get a chance to appear on a number of the album's tracks! At the heart of the record is the usual Johnny O'Neal trio format – with Johnny sometimes singing along, in that wonderfully unique voice of his – working alongside Ben Rubens on bass and Itay Morchi on drums. But when the horns come in, it really feels like something special happens – a bit more edge in the piano, and even the vocals as well – as if Johnny's sitting up even straighter, and bringing more of himself to the performance. The whole thing's great, though – and if you already love O'Neal's trio recordings, you'll find plenty to love – and may feel even more so on the other tracks too. Titles include "Sweet Monk", "Churchill Grounds", "Slow Hot Wind", "Please Be Kind", "CGLS", "People Make The World Go Round", "Sunday In New York", "Just A Dream", "Being In Love With You", and "Travelin Light". ✨✧ VariousJoyful Jazz – Christmas With Verve Vol 2 – The Instrumentals ... CD
Verve, 1960s/1980s/2016. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The sound of jazz is always the sound of Christmas in our house – as there's a certain sort of vibe that the music seems to bring to the holiday – where the warmth and personal energy of a jazz performance can really open up a Christmas tune! This set is a great illustration of that quality – as it brings together a wonderful array of Holiday jazz performances – many from the 60s, at a time when the blend of jazz and Christmas was really hitting its heights – plus a few well-chosen numbers from later years, including some Blue Note recordings mixed in with Verve numbers. Titles include "Here Comes Santa Claus" by Ramsey Lewis, "The Little Drummer Boy" by Kenny Burrell, "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" by Tom Scott, "Frosty The Snowman" by Roy Hargrove & Christmas McBride, "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" by Jimmy Smith, "Let It Snow" by Nelson Rangell, "I'll Be Home For Christmas/Sleigh Ride" by Eliane Elias, "Greensleeves" by John Coltrane, "Those Soulful Jingle Bells" by Mark Whitfield, "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" by Bill Evans, "Silver Bells" by Kevin Eubanks, "Swingle Jingle" by Lionel Hampton, and a previously unreleased track – "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm" by Oscar Peterson. ✨✧ VariousJazz Club – Swinging Christmas ... CD
Jazzclub (Germany), 1950s/1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sometimes swinging, sometimes a bit more mellow, but a really great collection overall – one that's filled with plenty of great holiday gems from years back – all put together with the same great feel as other titles in the Jazzclub series! Some of the tracks are familiar, but others are nicely obscure – and the package is a nice antidote to some of the overdone holiday collections you'll find on the market – proof that there's still some great Christmas tunes out there, just so long as you know where to look! Titles include "You're All I Want For Christmas" by Brook Benton, "A Christmas Toast" by Bing Crosby, "Blue Christmas" by Billy Eckstine, "Christmas Waltz" by Joe Williams, "Let It Snow" by Les Brown, "Swingle Jingle" by Lionel Hampton, "Ring Those Christmas Bells" by Peggy Lee, "Blue Christmas" by Billy Eckstine, "Sleigh Ride" by Jack Jones, "Silent Night" by Dinah Washington, "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" by Wayne Newton, "Frosty The Snowman" by Roy Hargrove & Christian McBride, and "White Christmas" by Jimmy Smith.
