Chicago/London Underground (Rob Mazurek)Night Walking Through Mirrors ... CD
Cuneiform, 2017. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
Rob Mazurek takes his Underground concept to the London scene this time around – working with a quartet that includes John Edwards on bass and Alexander Hawkins on piano – plus previous Chicago partner Chad Taylor on drums, electronics, and percussion! Tracks are quite long, and often relatively abstract – more outside than some of Rob's more spiritual recordings in recent years – especially in the way the bass and drums participate. There's a relatively open, improvisational feel to the whole thing – but, as always with Mazurek in this mode, the music always has an inherent sense of direction that really holds our attention. Titles include "A Night Spent Walking Through Mirrors", "Something Must Happen", "Boss Redux", and "Mysteries Of Emanating Light". CD

✨✧ Rob MazurekChimeric Stoned Horn (with 3D glasses) ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2017. New Copy ... $6.99
One of the trippiest Rob Mazurek albums in years, and one of the most mindblowing too – and that's before you even put on 3D classes to look at the album's cover art! The set was recorded at the experimental studios in the Marfa art colony in Texas – and Rob plays solo throughout, in layers of sound that combine his piccolo trumpet with electronics, sound samples, and even some spiritual vocalizations too! The approach is way different than the trumpet-meets-electronics modes of the ECM generation, or the work of players like Jon Hassell or Mark Isham – because Rob's approach is much more bold and powerful – and his electronics here often bring in raspy static or other elements that really offset the warmth of the trumpet. There's definitely some elements of Mazurek's earlier work with electronics – but the album also really reflects the greater level of spiritualism in more recent years. Titles include "Clap Thunder", "Arrival From A Distance", "Red Softly", "Stalking Light", "Stoned Horn", "Swarm Hands", and "Cube Of Rain". CD

Rob MazurekRome ... CD
Clean Feed (Portugal), 2017. New Copy ... $13.99
An incredible solo record from Rob Mazurek – a wonderful change from some of his larger group and collaborative projects – even though we love those a heck of a lot too! This set's a great reminder of the core improvisational genius that Rob's always had, but which sometimes is overshadowed by the group activity on his other records. Here, Mazurek blows cornet alone, and also plays both standard and prepared piano – and colors things with just a dash of his great electronics – often used in more sparing and subtle ways than some of his group efforts. A really beautiful set from a musician who continues to reward us over the years – with titles that include "Twombly At New Church", "Gazing Through Walls", "King Of Rome", and "Sweet Life In Disrepair". Rob Mazurek & Black Cube SPReturn The Tides – Ascension Suite & Holy Ghost ... CD
Cuneiform, 2014. Used ... $13.99
Rob Mazurek just keeps stunning us more and more over the years – growing way way past his earlier straight jazz roots, and even his key work in the Chicago underground – to a level where he's easily encompassing many different styles and genres at once – then finding a way to make the sounds all his own! This project has Rob furthering the electronic sounds of recent records, while still holding onto a core element of jazz with his work on cornet – an instrument he uses here with wonderfully rich acoustic tones, and hardly at any sort of easy Miles electric modes, or anything like that. The players here are all part of his scene in Sao Paulo – including Mauricio Takara on drums, Guilherme Granado on keyboards, Thomas Rohrer on electronics and soprano sax, and Rogerio Martins on percussion – but all players also take on other instruments, add in bits of voice, and work with the production and processing to really create some amazing sonic energy throughout. All tracks are long – and titles include "Let The Rain Fall Upwards", "Return The Tides", "Oh Mother", and "Reverse The Lightning". CD

✨✧ Rob MazurekChants & Corners ... CD
Clean Feed (Portugal), 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rob Mazurek's working here with a group of players who are most associated with his Sao Paulo Underground – although the album's not billed as such – and the leader has definitely leapt back strongly into that electronic mode that really characterized the initial second chapter of his career! Rob blows cornet on the record, but maybe handles more electronics overall – and the group also features more electronics from Thomas Rohrer, who also blows flute and soprano – plus additional keyboards from Guilherme Grado. More acoustic elements come into the music from the drums of Mauricio Takara and piano (both regular and prepared) of Philip Somervell – and overall, the sound is very dark and noisy – maybe more so than any other previous Sao Paulo projects. Titles include "The Blue Haze", "Android Sun", "Raked Harmonic Sun Burst Strata", "Sparklers For Eyes Like Splintered Lightning", and "Sun Flare Extensions & Other Dimensions". CD

✨✧ Rob Mazurek/Mwata Bowden/Julien Desprez/Matt Lux/MShore To Shore – Bridge Sessions 03 ... CD
Bridge Sessions (France), 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A mindblowing mix of acoustic and electric elements – a set that's in part very much like some of the more freewheeling work of cornetist Rob Mazurek, but which also features an organic core in the presence of AACM reedman Mwata Boden! Bowden adds in clarinet, baritone, didgeridoo, and percussion – all of which provide a very striking contrast and strong sense of soul alongside the electric guitar of Julian Desprez, electric bass of Matt Lux, and acoustic guitar of Mathieu Sourisseau – a French/Chicago combination of players who really stretch out here on two long tracks! Mazurek also adds some electronics next to his cornet – as on other recordings – and the set features the great addition of Douglas Ewart on half of the set – whose use of English horn and bamboo piccolo echo the spiritual currents of Bowden. Titles include "Fourth View" and "Second Side". CD

Exploding Star OrchestraStars Have Shapes ... CD
Delmark, 2010. Used ... $7.99
The most amazing records to date from Rob Mazurek's Exploding Star Orchestra – just the kind of cosmic, spiritual session you'd expect from the group's name – perfectly placed in a Chicago lineage that includes Sun Ra's Arkestra and the best years of the AACM! The group's got all the collaborative spirit of the latter reference – a largeish ensemble made up of some of the city's most important avant musicians in recent years – including Nicole Mitchell on flute, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Jason Adasiewicz on vibes, Josh Abrams on acoustic bass, Matt Bauder on clarinet and tenor, Jason Stein on bass clarinet, and Mike Reed and John Herndon on drums – all players who know each others strengths through countless gigs together – coming together under the visionary leadership of Rob Mazurek on cornet. There's some slight electro-acoustic elements, which further complicate the sound of the record – but all without ever taking it off base – and the whole thing's got a righteous sort of energy that makes us mighty proud that sounds this great came from our hometown. Titles include "ChromoRocker", "Impression #1", "Ascenscion Ghost Impression #2", and "Three Blocks Of Light". CD

✨✧ Chicago Underground QuartetChicago Underground Quartet ... CD
Thrill Jockey, 2001. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Genius work from the Chicago Underground ensemble – expanded here from the duo of Rob Mazurek and Chad Taylor, to include guitarist Jeff Parker and bassist Noel Kuppersmith. Mazurek plays cornet and just a hint of electronics, and combined with the fractured guitar work of Parker, the modalling percussion and vibes of Taylor, and the warmly soulful bass of Kuppersmith, the blend of instrumentation has all the startling presence of a lost early 60s modern session that might have been recorded for a label like New Jazz or Savoy. Tracks include "Tunnel Chrome", "Four In The Evening", "Total Recovery", "Nostalgia", "Sink, Charge, Fixture", and "Three In The Morning". CD

✨✧ Bill Dixon & Exploding Star OrchestraBill Dixon & Exploding Star Orchestra ... CD
Thrill Jockey, 2008. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A huge step forward for the mighty, expansive Exploding Star Orchestra – having recruited free jazz trumpet titan Bill Dixon as a band member and featured composer, if not the de facto leader – on this incredible second album for Thrill Jockey! The previous Exploding Star Orchestra set balanced a fiery, unpredictable intensity with a 70s style pulp soundtrack groove – while this one has more delicate and sublime moments at the outer edges, while ratcheting up the intensity all the more when the spirit hits! The group is made up of mainstays from the genre defiant Chicago scene – with group harbinger Rob Mazurek on coronet, Nicole Mitchell on flute, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Jeff Parker guitar, Jim Baker on piano, Jason Adasiewicz on vibes and tubular bells, Matthew Lux on bass, Jon Herndon on drums, Damon Lock with a spoken text read, and others. Heavy, spacious and truly beautiful! Titles include 3 long pieces that add up to over an hour all together, with the Dixon compositions "Entrances/One" and "Entrances/Two", and the killer centerpiece "Constellations For Innerdelight (For Bill Dixon)" composed by Rob Mazurek. ✨✧ StarlickerDouble Demon ... CD
Delmark, 2011. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A brilliant set from the Chicago scene – a trio that features cornet from Rob Mazurek, drums from John Herndon, and some mighty vibes from Jason Adasiewicz – easily one of the most important players on his instrument in the past decade! There's a mixture of freeness and togetherness here that really reminds us of the 60s new thing generation – like Bobby Hutcherson coming together with Tony Williams – yet infused with the genre-crossing energy that all three players embrace – that rich legacy that both Mazurek and Herndon bring to the session, and help show the way for a new chapter in the music of Adasiewicz. Proof that Delmark is suddenly as hip again as it was in the late 60s – with cuts that include "Orange Blossom", "Double Demon", "Vodou Cinque", "Skull Cave", and "Triple Hex". CD

✨✧ Sao Paulo/Chicago Underground with Pharoah SandersPharoah & The Underground – Primitive Jupiter ... LP
Clean Feed (Portugal), 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The legendary Pharoah Sanders joins the Chicago/Sao Paulo Underground – and the result is one of the most striking records in years from everyone involved! Pharoah blows with this really open, searching sort of tone – wonderfully concerned with sound texture at points, and not nearly as straight a some of his other sessions in recent decades – definitely drawing strong inspiration from the freewheeling work of Rob Mazurek on cornet, flute, and electronics – with additional electronics from Guilherme Granado. Drummer Chad Taylor provides a firm grounding for the experiments – as does bassist Matt Lux – and the group gets some Sao Paulo touches touches Mauricio Takara, who also plays percussion as well. Tracks are all relatively long – cosmic and open, with a stunning mix of acoustic and electric elements – and titles include "Spiral Mercury", "Primitive Jupiter", "This One's For All Mothers", and "Asasumamehn" – two of which are not on the CD!
