✨✧ Pearl JamTen ... CD
Epic, 1991. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Anthemic early 90s rock from Pearl Jam – one of the biggest debuts of all time and for good reason! Ten has a big, classic rock-reared sound, but done with such forthright sincerity and for the time, completely refreshing lack of macho posturing, it really was the perfect formula for a breakout smash in its era and it's worthy of its legacy – especially in retrospect! One classic song after another including "Once", "Alive", "Jeremy", "Why Go", "Black", "Porch", "Oceans", "Garden", "Deep" and "Release". CD

✨✧ Pearl JamYield ... CD
Epic, 1998. Used ... Out Of Stock
A return to grittier, more focused rock by Pearl Jam after taking a surprisingly loose approach on the underrated No Code – definitely among their finer records to come after the post-grunge boom years earlier in the decade! Pearl Jam is arguably at their best when they're balancing a genuine love for creatively daring rock with an unabashed love for fist-pumping scream along anthems, and they unyieldingly nail that on Yield. A late 90s rock classic. Includes "Brain Of J", "Faithfully", "No Way", "Given To Fly", "Wishlist", "Pilate", "Do The Evolution", "MFC", "Low Light", "In Hiding", "Push Me, Pull Me", "and "All Those Yesterdays". CD
(Die-cut digipak has light wear.)

✨✧ Bennie GreenSoul Stirrin' ... CD
Blue Note, 1958. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever recorded by hardbop trombone legend Bennie Green – an all-star sextet session that cooks like a mofo! The group features the twin tenors of Billy Root and Gene Ammons (billed just as "Jug" on the session, because of contractual reasons) – and it crackles with electricity from a rhythm section that features Ike Isaacs on bass, Sonny Clark on piano, and Elvin Jones on drums. There's some fantastic tracks on here, including Babs Gonzales' "Lullaby of the Doomed", and a monster jam called "We Wanna Cook", which was once described to us as "all you ever need to have a house party" – to which we wholeheartedly agree! Other tracks include "Black Pearl", "BG Mambo", and "Soul Stirrin" – and the album's one of the heaviest duty Blue Notes from the time! Features a bonus mono take of "Soul Stirrin". CD

✨✧ Temple Of The DogTemple Of The Dog ... CD
A&M, 1991. Used ... Out Of Stock
The lone album from Temple Of The Dog – featuring members of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, but recorded before Pearl Jam's massive debut and before Soundgarden broke out in a big way commercially – subverting, in a way, the idea of the rock supergroup! Intended as a tribute to then recently deceased singer Andrew Wood of peers Mother Love Bone, it's a surprisingly grounded, earnest effort that no doubt inspired Soundgarden and Pearl Jam songwriting to come. Includes the surprise hit "Hunger Strike", plus "Say Hello 2 Heaven", "Pushin Forward Back", "Wooden Jesus", "Four Walled World", "All Night Thing", "Call Me A Dog", "Times Of Trouble" and more. CD

Hodges, James, Smith, & CrawfordEarly Years & Unheard Pearls – 1970 to 1973 ... CD
Ace/Kent (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
A long-overdue tribute to the fantastic soul trio of Pat Hodges, Denita James, and Jessica Smith – a group who were often joined by a young Carolyn Crawford, to cut some fantastic singles back in the 70s! The group is wonderfully dynamic – as if everybody could be a soaring soulful lead – which gives the girls this sound that's way more than just the usual slice of female group soul from the time – something you'd know if you were lucky enough to score one of their rare 45s! And while the group did get the chance to cut a few albums, their best moments were often on 7" singles – which lead here to a whole other host of unissued tracks that sits nicely with cuts they released on labels like Pride and Mpingo. We've been huge fans of the group for decades, and have always treasured their singles – but here, we're discovering even more greatness than we knew existed – as the set features 13 tracks that were never issued back in the day, joining up with another 8 to make a glorious set list that includes "Wishful Thining", "Nobody", "In My Fantasy", "Write Me A Letter", "Let's Pick Up The Pieces", "Again", "Baby My Love Is Showing", "Let It Out Let It In", "I'm A Woman Who Loves You", "Ain't That Right", "If You wanna Love Me", and "It Cracks Me Up". ✨✧ VariousAfrican Pearls Vol 1 – Congo/Rumba On The River 1954 to 1968 ... CD
Syllart (UK), Mid 50s-1960s. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A great collection of classic Congolese rhumba work from the 50s and 60s – music that has some elements of the Cuban style of the genre, but which really takes off on its own in whole new ways! The guitar is an essential part of the rhythms here – dancing along with percussion at a level that makes it a important to the groove as it is to the melody – a distinction that didn't hit American music as strongly until James Brown in the 60s. Most of the tracks here have vocals too – taking off in fluid, free ways that often diverge nicely from the core rhythms of the tunes – in ways that add an extra layer of musical complication, even if you're not privy to the meaning of the language! The 2CD package features a whopping 44 tracks in all – with notes in both English and French – and titles that include "Miguel Canta", "Alphonso", "Le Temps Passe", and "Si Tu Bois Beaucoup" by OK Jazz; "Permission", "Guantanamera", "Sey Sey", and "Bina Ringa" by African Fiesta & Tabu Ley; "Maria Valente" by Rock A Mambo; "Bantous Pachanga" by Bantous De La Capitale; "Jamais Kolonga" by Tino Baroza; and "Tabalissimo" by Tabu Ley. ✨✧ VariousMovements – 14 Deep Funk Pearls Compiled By Tobias Kirmayer ... LP
Perfect Toy (Germany), Late 60s/Early 70s. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
One of the funkiest compilations we've heard in a long long time – a stunning set of rare 45s, all pulled together by Tobias Kirmayer of Tramp Records fame! The groove here is totally in the pocket – a blistering blend of hard drums, rough guitars, and blasting horns – all served up with some nice jazzy moments from time to time, and the kind of vocals that might put James Brown to shame! The whole thing's lovingly packaged, remastered, and fully licensed with the high level of quality we've come to expect from the Perfect Toy label – and Tobi even knocked himself out with some great notes on each of the tunes. Titles include "Soul Popcorn (parts 1 & 2)" by Doc Oliver, "Wahoo Wahoo Wahoo" by Wayne Carter, "Whatever Turns You On (parts 1 & 2)" by Prepositions, "Todos" by Nombres, "Soul Safari" by Lew Hanson & The Islanders, "What It Is (parts 1 & 2)" by Randolph Brothers Plus, "Muy Sabroso" by Lou Garno Trio, and "I Weep" by BB Brown. ✨✧ VariousESP Sampler – ESP 1051 ... LP
ESP, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Very cool stuff – and a fittingly cool collection of work from the great ESP label! If you've never seen one of their samplers before, they're sort of a mad mix of many different styles – putting together tracks in short little blips, filtered out of longer original ones on albums, into a cool collage of sounds and moods – that includes material by Marion Brown, Sunny Murray, New York Art Quartet, The Fugs, Henry Grimes, Albert Ayler, Pearls Before Swine, Pharoah Sanders, and many others! This album features a number of great bits from records we've never seen, mixed together with some more classic moments, all packaged in a cool cover. Includes bits from "East Village Other" by Ishamael Reed, "The Lovebook Record" by Andrei Vozenensky, "Movement Soul" from a record of traditional recordings, "Ni Kantu En Esperanto" from an Esperanto recording, "The Coach With Six Insides" from a musical based on Finnegan's Wake, "Assemblage" by Gunter Hampel, "East Village Other" by Allen Ginsberg, "Call Me Burroughs" by William S Burroughs, "Zitro" by James Zitro, "Of Love & War" by Randy Burns, and lots more by some of the usual suspects. VariousIf I Had A Pair Of Wings – Jamaican Doo Wop Vol 1 ... LP
Death Is Not The End, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $22.99 24.99
Very early work from the Jamaican scene – a set that includes cuts by artists who'd later record classic tracks in the rocksteady years, but who here are working in a much different mode! The title is plenty apt, but only gets at part of the sound – as this isn't straight doo wop as you'd know from the American scene, but instead some early group harmony – of the sort that would flourish even more strongly on famous Jamaican trio recordings of the late 60s – handled here with much more stripped-down instrumentation, and a shifting set of rhythms that mixes US influences with other more Caribbean modes. Titles include "Muriel" by Alton & Eddie, "Dearest Darling" by Jiving Juniors, "Til The End Of Time" by Chuck & Dobby, "Dearest Beverly" by Jimmy Cliff, "Heavenly Angel" by Laurel Aitken, "Do You Know" by Owen & Millie, "I'm Going Back" by The Charmers, "Diamonds & Pearls" by Dobby Dobson, and "Album Of Memory" by The Mellowlarks. VariousJamaican Jazz From Federal Records – Carib Roots, Jazz, Mento, Latin, Merengue, & Rhumba 1960 to 1968 ... LP
Dub Store (Japan), 1960s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $35.99 39.99
Fantastic sounds from the years before reggae became the international sound of Jamaica – music from the island nation's jazz scene, which was at the crossroads of so many different styles of music – jazz from the north, Latin rhythms from Cuba and Puerto Rico, and a fair bit of other Caribbean sounds too – all of which filter through the wonderful collection of music on the set! The title breaks down the different genres featured – but there's often a surprisingly unified feel to the whole record too – one that stands partly as a testament to the musical strengths of all the performers involved! In the days before Trojan and Studio One, Federal Records was an important Jamaican label – and did an especially great job of capturing some of the sounds that were part of that nation's club culture and resorts in the 60s. Titles include "Angelima" and "Like Falling In Love" by Ernest Ranglin, "Profile Cha Cha" and "Rhumbina" by Cecil Lloyd & The Starline Troubadors, "Estrellita" and "I Love Paris" by The Lennie Hibbert Combo, "Tis Wonderful" by Eric Grant, "Linstead Market" by Baba Motta & Ernest Ranglin, "Wheel & Turn Me" by Bertie King, "Go Fife Go" by Count Owen, "Mango Walk" by Bertie King & Ernest Ranglin, "String Of Pearls" by Auldey Williams & His Orchestra, "Solas Market" by Baba Motta, and "Monday Monday" by Winston Turner Quintet. The Trojan Records label was a pivotal force in taking reggae to a larger audience at the end of the 60s – pushing a huge amount of Jamaican artists into the global scene, and forever helping the sound of music in the process! ✨✧ VariousThere Will Be Joy – Democratizing The Record Business In Chicago – 1968 to 1978 ... CD
Narroway, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of rare gospel recordings from the Chicago scene of the 70s – all served up on a family of labels that were tied together in the same way as some of the indie soul and funk labels of the time! Producer Harold Freeman recorded most of this music, at a time between big opportunities for gospel acts on larger labels – and the work includes some much bigger names who'd later go onto great fame, and some key Chicago artists who might never have gotten exposure otherwise – represented here with recordings that appeared on the Righteous, Peace, and Michael record labels. The 2CD set is a fantastic look into this small local scene – presented with very detailed notes on Freeman and his recordings – in support of a batch of 46 tracks that includes work by the Gospel Sensationals, Inspirational Singers, Rev Maceo Woods, James E Lenox, Brother Ed Smith, Wings Of Heaven Choir, Sammie Cheatham, Voices Of Cosmopolitan, Reba Harris, Pearl McGhee, Windy City Four, and many others!
