Don Cherry & Jean SchwarzRoundtrip – Live At Theatre Recamier Paris 1977 ... CD
Transversales Disques (France), 1977. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
Don Cherry gave many wonderful musical performances on the European scene in the 70s, including this one – a gem of a record that was thought to be lost for years, and finally gets released to the world at large! The set's a live collaboration with electronic musician Jean Schwarz – whose contributions here are nicely subtle, and never challenge the acoustic energy of the session, but instead augment it in all these really cool, unique ways – very different than most improvised music with electronics at the time. Cherry plays pocket trumpet and some great doussn gouni – in the company of an equally fantastic lineup that features JF Jenny Clark on bass, Nana Vasconcelos on percussion, and Michel Portal on saxes, bass clarinet, and bandoneon. Given all the elements, there's some very unique sounds going on here – a really amazing record that includes the tracks "Bells One", "Doussn Gouni", "Tribute To Ornette", "Bando", and "Berimbau". ✨✧ VariousPsychedelic Pernambuco ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
70s psychedelia from the northeastern state of Pernambuco, Brazil – incredible stuff that combines rawly percussive tropical sounds with a world of psychedelic creativity and possibilities – one of the best compilations ever put together by Mr Bongo! Lula Cortes was a pivotal figure in the scene and he's pretty well represented here, including his influential recordings with Ze Remalho. Even more exciting, though, is the stuff we've never been fortunate enough to hear before now – and there's a pretty good deal of it! The fusion of global psych and folk sounds into a distinctly Brazilian sound is nothing short of amazing – regional and traditional percussion underneath sitars, lutes, keyboards and more. It features songs by the great Lula Cortes & Ze Ramalho, Geraldo Azevedo & Alceu Valenca, Marconi Notaro, Flaviola E O Bando Do Sol and The Gentleman. 19 tracks in all: "Sorriso Delvagem" by The Gentlemen, "O Tempo" and "Desespero" by Flaviola E O Bando Do Sol, "Antropologica", "Maracatu" and "Fidelidade" by Marconi Notaro, "Mister Misterio", "Virgem Virginia" and more by Geraldo Azevedo & Alceu Valenca, "Bailado Das Muscarias" and "Maracas De Fogo" by Lula Cortes & Ze Ramalho, "Noite Preta" by Lula Cortes and more. Mike BandoniLost Communication ... LP
Funk Night, 2020. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Mike Bandoni soars to space on waves of funky drums – spread out here on long tracks that are often three times the length of a funky 45, which allows plenty of room for the drums to do all sorts of sharp changes and crackling passages – as plenty of cool keyboards, electronics, and other effects filter into the mix! The drums are at the core throughout, and Mike's a hell of a drummer – but he also really does a great job of bringing in all these other spooky, spacey sounds that really give the album a unique sort of vibe! Titles include "Gamma Ray Burst", "Event Horizon Approach", "Arrival", "The Long Nap", "Something Wonderful", and "It Might Be OK". LP, Vinyl record album

Museu Da Imagem (Brazil), 1968. Very Good ... $9.99
Brazilian diva Elizeth Cardoso lays down a number of tracks recorded either with the Zimbo Trio, or with Jacob Do Bandolim. The Zimbo tracks have a nice bossa feel, and the titles include "Cidade Vazia", "Abertura", "E Louxo So", "Tem Do", and "Derradeira Primavera". The cuts with Jacob Do Bandolim are a little more samba oriented, but have a nice groove. Those cuts include "Barracao", "Jamais", and "Mulata Assanhada". LP, Vinyl record album

Stan GetzNobody Else But Me ... CD
Verve, 1964. Used ... $7.99
One of the greatest Stan Getz albums ever – even though it wasn't issued until the 90s! The set's a rare unreleased session from 1964 – recorded by Getz with a fresh, free-thinking approach – but abandoned by Verve because they were making so much money with Stan's bossa nova sides of the time! Stan's working here in his great mid 60s quartet with vibist Gary Burton – heard briefly on record on the Getz Au Go Go album, which Verve made mostly a bossa session – but stepping out here with the kind of truly fresh sound that made its first, long-overdue recorded appearance on this set. The whole album has a fluid, lyrical style that's similar to that used by Stan for the wonderful Sweet Rain album – a sense of rhythm and timing that was modern, yet never forgot the melody – clearly inspired by Stan's earlier bossa experiments, but way way past their basics. The blend of vibes and sweetly-blown tenor is amazing – and titles include "6 Nix Quix Flix", "Waltz For A Lovely Wife", "Out Of Focus", "Sweet Sorrow", and "Nobody Else But Me". CD

Gerry Mulligan & Astor PiazzollaReunion Cumbre ... CD
Random (Argentina), 1974. Used ... $2.99 4.99
A magical meeting of two tremendous talents – saxophonist Gerry Mulligan and bandoneon player Astor Piazzolla – heard here in a rare Italian recording from the 70s! The album's a really unique effort for both musicians – a bit more pensive and thoughtful than some of Piazzolla's usual work from the 70s, and much less jazz-based than Mulligan's other records – more in a soundtrack mode, and one that seems to have echoes of Gato Barbieri's score to Last Tango In Paris! Like that great record, this one mixes Argentine styles with freer, more fluid ones – updating roots with a 70s sense of sophistication, and really letting Gerry Mulligan take off in long, open-ended solos that are among some of his best work of the decade. Other instrumentation includes marimba, guitar, keyboards, and percussion from Tullio De Piscopo – plus a bit of strings as well – and titles include "20 Years Ago", "Close Your Eyes & Listen", "Deus Xango", "Aire De Buenos Aires", "Summit", and "Years Of Solitude". A record that features a slightly expanded concept on the ideas that Astor Piazzolla had unleashed with his Zero Hour album – all those incredible twists and turns he'd been using to transform Argentine modern music – roots in the tango, but expressions that are up there with some of the most creative 20th Century performances from other parts of the globe! Quarteto Em CyQuarteto Em Cy Interpreta – Gonzaguinha, Caetano, Ivan, Milton ... LP
Philips (Brazil), 1980. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A really wonderful album from Quarteto Em Cy – the Brazilian vocal quartet who first rose to prominence during the bossa nova years, but soon moved into even more sophisticated material during the 70s! The approach of this set is telegraphed in the title – as the group take on songs penned by Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento, Ivan Lins, and Gonzaguinha – the new MPB generation of the 70s, whose music turns out to be perfect for the growing talents of the girls – topped off with some beautiful arrangements from Octavio Burnier, whose work really rises to the level of the vocals! The whole thing's great – a magnificent journey in sound – and titles include "Idolatrada", "Barco Fantasma", "Antes De Seja Tarde", "O Ultimo Trem", "Um Dia", "Ponta De Areia", "Gira Girou", "Ciranda Menina", and "Abandonado". ECM, 1988. Used ... $18.99
The lofty trumpet of Enrico Rava is a perfect match for Dino Saluzzi's wonderfully airy performances on bandoneon – and this record is one of the lost gems of late 80s ECM. The sound definitely has that "bordering on wallpaper" feel fo a lot of the ECM work from the time, but Saluzzi's bandoneon has a breathy emotive quality that works against the usual formula, and Rava's solos help the entire project along tremendously. Titles include "Le But De Souffle", "Minguito", "Luna Volver", and "Tiempos De Ausencias". CD

Sound Triangle/On High, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 34.99 About April 5, 2024 (delayed)
Some of the tightest funky 70s jamming ever – a lost gem from Ray & His Musical Court, a group that perfectly fuses JB/Horny Horns funk with beat-heavy Afro-Cuban groove! Ray and the group are one of the more obscure funky combos of the era, and it's a damn shame, because the group's tight-as-can-be amalgam of JB's style horn riffing and thumping Afro-Cuban percussion is some of the absolute best of its kind. This group seriously smokes any of the current funk bands on the road! On these sessions Ray wrote, produced, played "organ flute" and provided some vocals in a large group that includes three trumpets, bass clarinet, sax, two drummers, congas, electric bass, and a line of mostly Spanish vocalists. Amazing 70s super funk with a very proud Latin edge – and featuring tracks that include "Sunny", "Soul Freedom", "Cookie Crumbs", "De Eso Nada Monada", "Lo Sabia", "Venimos Acabando", "La Pena", and "La Senorita Lola". Jorge Lopez RuizUn Hombre De Buenos Aires ... LP
Trova/Altercat (Germany), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 34.99
One of the coolest 70s albums we've ever heard from the always-cool Jorge Lopez Ruiz – a set that expands out from his earlier jazz work with a flurry of wonderful sounds and styles, set up in a much more ambitious vibe overall! Yet despite the sophistication of the setting, the work is also pretty darn groovy too – lots of funky jazz touches next to more modern inflections – with a larger lineup that includes later ECM great Dino Saluzzi on bandoneon, Donna Caroll on cool wordless vocals, and other musicians on electric piano, percussion, guitar, trumpet, soprano sax, and violin! With the latter instrument and the bandoneon, Ruiz is giving a nod to the modern tango world of Astor Piazzolla, yet coming across with some European cinematic modes as well – all in a well-done set that's completely compelling all the way through. Titles include "El Grito Del Hombre", "La Alegria Del Hombre", "El Ruego Del Hombre", "La Nostalgia Del Hombre", and "El Adios Del Hombre". LP, Vinyl record album

A very beautiful, very intimate album from Venezuelan singer Isaac Sasson – a set that's got an acoustic, gentle approach throughout – almost recalling some of the more inventive post-bossa experiments from the Brazilian scene, but with flavors that are very much its own! In addition to personal, poetic vocals from Isaac – who has a raspy charm that goes beyond language – the set also features a mix of percussion and wind instruments, and work on bandola llanera, charango, and cuatro – all used in these subtle ways to create a light sonic palette – maybe with the same laidback and spacious vibe as the instrumentation of Fabiano Do Nascimento. Titles include "Manos Largas", "Tu Puente Punteo", "El Credo", "Mare Mare", "Chuma", and "La Cancion De Mi Abuelo". LP, Vinyl record album

Cedar WaltonNaima – Live At Boomer's (Night At Boomers Vol 1 & 2) (32 Jazz pressing) ... CD
Savoy/32 Jazz, 1973. Used ... $7.99
A helluva great CD – one that brings together both volumes of the legendary Night At Boomers live dates on Muse Records from the 70s! The core material is a great little session of soul jazz – and very much in a classic mode, but with touches of the Strata East sound of the 70s. Although Blue Note and Prestige had seemed to abandon straighter soul jazz by the early 70s, Muse was cranking out some nice sides with older players of the 60s scene. This set features Cedar Walton's crack trio with Sam Jones and Louis Hayes, joined by tenorist Clifford Jordan, who was blossoming into a whole new player during the decade. Titles include "Holy Land", "Down In Brazil", "Cheryl", "Naima", "I'll Remember April", "All The Way", and "Bleeker Street Theme". CD

Certainly a more pop-based effort than some of Yello's previous albums, but still a great little record – filled with playful electronics and a really unique sense of rhythm and groove! Even at the height of their fame, Yello never abandoned the spare analogue-heavy styles that made their early work so great – and for this set, they've almost kind of expanded that sound with a range of European and historical influences that make for a more widely fleshed-out version of their genius. Titles include "Goldrush", "Santiago", "Hawaiian Chance", "La Habanera", "The Rhythm Divine", "Moon On Ice", and "St Senor The Hairy Grill". LP, Vinyl record album

Larry YoungMother Ship ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $10.99 13.99
Jazz organ explodes to the next level – on this brilliant and rare session by Larry Young from 1969! The record was Young's last recording for Blue Note, and was never issued at the time – only making a brief appearance in a short series at the end of the 70s – and its obscurity makes it all the more important, as it's the kind of record that would have transformed jazz tremendously if released at the time. On the set, Young delivers on all his 60s experimentation with modal grooves and Coltrane-styled playing – working with a quartet that includes Lee Morgan on trumpet, Herbert Morgan on tenor, and Eddie Gladden on drums – soaring to the skies on long tunes that push the Hammond farther than any organist had ever imagined! And while modern, and freer than before, Young is also playing here without some of the over-indulgent styles of his later jazz-rock work – still sticking to the Blue Note mode, while managing to record in a "new thing" mode long after the label had abandoned the "new thing" sound! Mindblowing – and with titles that include "Visions", "Love Drops", "Trip Merchant" and "Street Scene". CD

A whole new world of grooves we've never heard before – music from a short stretch on the Italian scene when local artists were really taken with the new developments in Afro Funk, and started to serve up some fresh styles of their own! The music here is maybe a blend of West African sounds and sound library modes – often leaner than the large group ensembles of Fela and some of his contemporaries, which also makes the tracks perfect for the clubs as well – but with a vibe that's sharper and tighter than some of the Afro/disco crossover cuts of the time! The selection of tracks is wonderful, and the whole thing is very revelatory – with titles that include "Why O" by Beryl Cunningham, "Kumbayero" by Weyman Corporation, "L'Unica Chance" by Walter Rizzati, "Amore" by Chrisma, "Tabu Tuba (part 1)" by I Robots, "Africa Sound" by Jean Paul & Angelique, "Contrabbando Di Fagioli" by Ramasandiran Somusundaram, "MAAGO" by Prognosi Riservata, "The Voodoo Lady" by Lara Saint Paul, and "Soul Makossa" by African Revival. A wonderful step forward for the team of Hall & Oates – and a set that has them moving more into soul than ever before! The album's a tremendous collaboration with the legendary Arif Mardin, who takes the pair's well-crafted vocals into territory that's much more slinkily soulful than some of their previous records – that sound that was always lurking in the background, never quite right, but which emerges here fully in that classic 70s Hall & Oates mode. Daryl and John seem to harmonize more here than before, and the backings are still somewhat rockish, but have a warmth that really suits their singing. We can't argue with the sublime brilliance of "She's Gone", one of those tracks that we've heard a bazillion times, but never cease to respect – and other titles include "Everytime I Look At You", "Had I Known You Better Then", "When The Morning Comes", and "Laughing Boy". Two fantastic saxophonists, recorded together in Texas with a very echoey vibe – in a space that we think is the image pictured in the cover! Even if Joe McPhee and Jon Butcher aren't playing in an abandoned house in the desert, they still sound pretty darn amazing – Joe on alto, John on tenor – both crafting these spacious, open lines that are dripping with soul – and delivered in a way that often has one player creating more non-melodic sounds, while the other hangs in more tuneful, spiritual territory. The lack of any other instrumentation is wonderful – and the recording quality captures all the subtle shifts in sound texture and shape – on titles that include "Mine Shaft", "Sometimes Yes Sometimes No", "Paradise Overcast", and "A Forty Foot Square Room". Shankar was one of the few flying the flag of jazz/Indian music crossovers in the 80s – pushing the genre a bit farther forward at a time when most other players had abandoned it! Given that his instrumentation here is violin and drum machine, the sound's a bit different than some of the sitar/tabla-based sessions of the past – but there's a similar sensibility going on, one that stretches out the sound with inspirations drawn from Indian music, executed by a quartet that also includes Jan Garbarek on soprano and tenor sax, Zakir Hussain on tabla and congas, and Trilok Gurtu on additional percussion. ✨✧ Gene ClarkWhite Light/Roadmaster ... CD
BGO (UK), 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two classic albums from the great Gene Clark – back to back in a single set! First up is White Light – a key part of that scattered legacy that really helped cement his individual genius after leaving The Byrds! Much of the record is a spare and intimate affair – with Gene's warm vocals accompanied by his own gently picked acoustic guitar, along with producer Jesse Ed Davis (who does a masterful job in the booth on this one) also on guitar. The tunes are also sweetened by waltzy basslines, and Byrds-y keyboard riffs by Ben Sidran, but Gene's wonderful vocals and his amazingly strong songwriting are obviously the biggest draws – not standard country or roots rock, and instead delivered with a sense of sophistication that's almost a genre unto itself. Titles include the amazing "For A Spanish Guitar" – plus "The Virgin", "With Tomorrow", "White Light", "Where My Love Lies Asleep", "1975", and a great reading of The Band & Bob Dylan's "Tears Of Rage". Roadmaster is a warm, wonderful set of Gene Clark recordings from the early 70s – material that probably should have been issued as a proper album in the States back in the day, as sounds pretty much as solid to us as some of his great work in preceding years – but was issued only in Europe at the time! Roadmaster was pulled together from 1972 sessions that were essentially abandoned, but it's truly top notch Cali country rock featuring Byrds and Burrito Brothers in the sessions. Titles include "She's The Kind Of Girl", "Full Circle Song", "Roadmaster", "In A Misty Morning", "She Don't Care About Time", "Shooting Star", "Rough And Rocky", "One In A Hundred", "I Remember The Railroad" and more. Jacko's working here with singer Gerrie Woo – who sings in English on about half of the album's tracks, giving the set a nice pop-styled Latin groove that reminds us a lot of Willie Bobo's work for Verve, and some of the more unusual indie Latin albums of the time. The set's filled with loads of great numbers – including Hector Rivera compositions "Recuerdos", "Que Vengo Acabando", "Don't Squeeze The Peaches", and "Mambo Jack" – plus covers of "Jive Samba", "Words", and "Green Onions". Paquito/Sunnyside, 2007. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great little album from Paquito D'Rivera – not nearly as gimmicky as you might expect from the title, and a soulful set that's right in line with some of his first few gems as a leader in the US many years back! There's definitely some tango quality to some of the tunes – but it's mostly just a bit of bandoneon used lightly in the instrumentation – leaving most of the work here to sparkle in that Havana-influenced blend of jazz and Latin roots that's always made D'Rivera's music so great. Paquito plays alto and clarinet, alongside trumpet and valve trombone from Diego Urcola, piano from Ed Simon and Alon Yavanai, bass from Oscar Stagnaro, and drums from Mark Walker. Hector Del Curto plays bandoneon on the record – and tracks include "Milonga 10", "What About That", "Pere", "Revirado", "Funk Tango", "Mariela's Dream", "Como Un Bolero", and "Giant Steps". CD

A great 70s album by Os Novos Baianos – a wonderfully youthful group that was one of the bright spots in Brazilian music after the Tropicalia years. The band had a style that mixed folksy percussion with honest personal songwriting, plus occasional touches of elements gleaned from the larger influences in Brazilian rock at the time. The album has a sound that's a lot more intimate than later work, with some especially great work on guitar and bandolim, and great production on the band's vocals. Titles include "Sorrir E Cantar Como Bahia", "Dagmar", "Vagabundo Nao E Facil", "Cosmos E Damiao", "Com Qualquer Dois Mil Reis", and "Os Pingo Da Chuva". LP, Vinyl record album

CAM, 1964. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great Italian comedy score from the early 60s – put together in key transitional modes by composer Carlo Rustichelli! The music is a great mix of those older, more sentimental Italian styles with some of the cleaner, leaner, playful sounds that were beginning to emerge in the 60s – served up in a host of short tracks with a great deal of variety – some in a swinging jazz mode, a few in a twist party style, and others that are more serious. Titles include "Ratto Twist", "Corrida Rumba", "Vampata D'Amuri", "Morte Di Ascalone", and "Dicerie". LP, Vinyl record album

ECM (Germany), 2017. Used ... Out Of Stock
The moody title's a great one for this album by pianist Craig Taborn – given the spare melodies and ghost-like traces of sound that move the album forward! The album's a perfect match between Taborn's music and the ECM aesthetic – as space and air mean as much to the record as the sound of the players – who work together in this really thoughtful way to shape the slow-flowing evolution of the tunes! In addition to piano, Taborn also plays a bit of electronics – and the album features some especially great clarinet from Chris Speed, who also plays tenor – plus bass from Chris Lightcap and drums from Dave King. Titles include "Abandoned Reminder", "The Shining One", "The Great Silence", "Ancient", "Phantom Ratio", and "Subtle Living Equations". CD

✨✧ Larry YoungMother Ship ... CD
Blue Note, 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
CD

A killer entry in this excellent series – and a set that feels like you've stacked up a whole batch of deep funk 45s, but all packed together in one great album – with a price that's a lot lower than buying some of those too-expensive limited 7" singles! There's plenty of heavy drums, raw breaks, and soulful vocals throughout – and titles include "Wind Up" by Cookin On 3 Burners, "The Scoop" by the Oscillators, "Saved" by Glenn Fallows, "On The Hook" by Misha Panfilov, "Something Wonderful" by Mike Bandoni, "Auras" by Gentle Nature, "Enough" by Ray James, "A Better Woman" by Cole James, "Seek & Destroy" by Great Revivers, "It's Gonna Be Alright" by Carlton Jumel Smith, and "Fleet Streak" by Kerbside Collection. ✨✧ Gato BarbieriLast Tango In Paris ... LP
United Artists, 1972. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest moments ever from saxophonist Gato Barbieri – and that's saying a lot, given that by the time of this recording, he'd already had a great 60s run as an avant jazz musician, and started the 70s with a string of albums that criss-crossed jazz and South American musical styles! Yet Last Tango In Paris may well be Barbieri's crowning achievement – a sublime record that draws on all the richer, more emotive themes of his Latin America projects, but gives them new focus in the arrangements of Oliver Nelson – who ensures that the music is never too cheesy or overdone – quite a feat, given the sexy setting of the film! Gato draws a lot from Argentine tango, but often uses his own sax solos in place of a more familiar bandoneon – in a way that pushes the "new tango" mode of the time even farther – especially when set amidst Nelson's wonderful orchestrations. Titles include many versions of the "Last Tango" theme, plus the tracks "Girl In Black", "Jeanne", "Why Did She Choose You?", "It's Over", and "Fake Ophelia". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ George BensonPacific Fire ... LP
CTI, 1975. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Unusual work from the great George Benson – a wonderful session that was recorded by CTI during George's classic years for the label – but issued only briefly a number of years later, and slightly lost amongst the rest of his catalog! The material's great, though – and has George in top form for the sweet 70s funk years – working with arrangements by Ronnie Foster and David Matthews – on tunes that also include keyboards by Foster and Bobby Lyle, trombone from Fred Wesley, saxes from David Sanborn, Joe Farrell, Michael Brecker, and Ronnie Cuber – and even a bit of additional guitar from Eric Gale! There's a nice mix of modes here – some tight funky cuts, some more flowing numbers, and even one more traditional jazz tune with a great vocal by George – on the classic "Moody's Mood For Love". Other titles include "Melodia Espanol", "Pacific Fire", "Em", "Bandoleros Caballa", "Let Your Love Come Out", and "Knock On Wood". LP, Vinyl record album

A warm, wonderful set of Gene Clark recordings from the early 70s – material that probably should have been issued as a proper album in the States back in the day, as sounds pretty much as solid to us as some of his great work in preceding years – but was issued only in Europe at the time! ✨✧ Michel LegrandMichel Legrand Plays For Dancers (aka Archi-Cordes) ... LP
Philips, 1964. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the first moments of grooviness from Michel Legrand in the 60s – a set that takes his older orchestral style and fits it to a really mod set of rhythms! The album's filled with jaunty grooves – leaping sort of numbers that almost have a "yeh yeh" French pop approach, but which are instrumental throughout – topped with these swirling strings that step along at a clip to match the rhythms, and backed with lots of groovy organ from Legrand, and guitar from the legendary Elek Bacsik! There's even some wordless vocals scatting through the mix – and the sound's unlike anything else that Legrand ever did – a great precursor to his famous soundtracks, but a real standout record as well. Titles include the famous "Di Gue Ding Ding" – a cut you'll recognize right away – plus "Motor City", "Bandol", "Alcatraz", "Da We Da", "Monkey Business", "Manhattan Stroll", "Hi Girls", "Come Ray & Come Charles", and "Noix De Coco". Trova/RGS (Argentina), 1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Other instrumentation includes marimba, guitar, keyboards, and percussion from Tullio De Piscopo – plus a bit of strings as well – and titles include "Hace Viente Anos", "Deux Xango", "Viente Anos Despues", "Reunion Cumbre", "Reminiscencia", and "Anos De Soledad". One of the most lovely albums ever recorded by Pauline Oliveros – the kind of standard-setting set that immediately helped distinguish her as one of the most inventive voices of all time on her instrument! And yes, that instrument is the accordion – but in the hands of Oliveros, it's more of a tool for sonic exploration and tonal surprise – very different than just about any of her predecessors, even the modern ones! The set features two beautiful pieces – the long "Wanderer", which has Oliveros on solo accordion out front of the Springfield Accordion Orchestra – and the moodier "Horse Sings From Cloud", with slow-building passages that mix her own bandoneon with a concertina, harmonium, and accordion. An amazing little box set – filled with 10 rare bossa nova albums from the Brazilian underground of the 60s – almost all of which we'd never heard before! The records here were mostly issued on small labels at the time – the kind of sets that never circulated widely outside of Brazil, and which often have unusual and striking sounds that are quite different from mainstream bossa work on labels like Verve or Elenco! There's a fair bit of jazz on most albums, and the instrumentation varies nicely throughout – sometimes more sax up front, sometimes more acoustic guitar, or offbeat horn arrangements, odd percussion, and lots of other sweet touches! Each CD features two full albums, completely with cover art and other details of the records – and the set features the albums Balanco E Bossa Nova by Ritmistas Da Bossa, Sambalanco by Orquesta Moderna De Samba, Isso E Bossa Nova Mesmo by Conjunto Sambossa, Saxsambando by Os Saxsambistas Brasileiros, O Balanco E A Bossa by Conjunto Masterplay, Samba Do Bom by Conjunto Samba De Balanco, Samba Pra Frente by Samba Trio, A Musica Maravilhosa De Antonio Carlos Jobim by Bossa Brass, and the self-titled 1964 album by Os Azes De Bossa. The sound here is light and lively – with backing from Caculinha and his combo, who mix together acoustic samba rhythms with a nice touch of electric organ – for a sound that's got some nice Walter Wanderley elements, but still retains a strong samba groove, with plenty of choppy bandolim in the arrangements. Elizeth and Ciro duet on a number of tracks – including a few longer "pout-pourri" medleys, and they each sing a few numbers on their own as well. A fantastic 70s session from Charlie Palmieri – featuring some of his best keyboard solos of the decade, and some very cool work on organ that almost makes us think Sun Ra is in the group! The style is quite unusual, even for Charlie – with a weird sound from his organ that really gives the record an edge – played alongside straighter piano lines, heavy percussion, and lots of warm horn work overall. Charlie's organ really stands out best on the descarga cut "No Esta En Na" and the groovy midtempo "Estoy Friza'o" – but the whole thing's great, and other cuts include "Comelon Hustle", "King Charles", "Dame Tu Corazon", and "Sobando El Piano Merengue". Fantastic fuzz from a French Canadian combo of the 60s – one of the coolest garage bands we've ever heard from up north at the time, romping here with a style that's equal parts Sunset Strip and some of the hipper Parisian groups of the time! Lyrics are all in French, and the production has this nice sense of darkness that makes echo out of the organ lines, jangly guitar, and nice touches of fuzz – all flowing together with a style that sounds plenty magic all the way through, even if you can't always understand the lyrics.
