Nate WooleyArgonautica ... CD
Firehouse 12, 2016. New Copy ... $9.99 15.98
One of the most ambitious records we've heard from Nate Wooley in a long time – a single extended performance that features the trumpeter in a sextet – with additional trumpet from Ron Miles, piano from Cory Smythe, double drums from Rudy Royston and Devin Gray, and some especially nice Fender Rhodes and electronics from Jozef Dumoulin! Another record with such a setting might be freely improvised, but there's definitely a sense of structure here – a core idea from Wooley that flows out in a beautiful way as each of the musicians pick up the "Argonautica" spirit – adding their own shades and voices, but dominating too much – and instead, providing the right sort of inspiration to drive each other onward! There's a really beautiful sound to the whole thing – and the Fender Rhodes are especially nice next to Wooley's trumpet. CD

✨✧ Nate WooleyComplete Syllables (4CD set) ... CD
Pleasure Of The Text, 2017. New Copy 4CD ... Just Sold Out!
A huge box of work from trumpeter Nate Wooley – a package that features two albums that were previously issued on small overseas labels, and two more that appear here for the first time ever! The music has a very unified vibe throughout – as every one of the recordings features Wooley in a solo mode – two with just acoustic trumpet, which really shows off his amazing sense of sound and timing – one more with an amplifier and the trumpet, and one more with prepared tapes – in a set dedicated to experimentalist Kenneth Gaburo! The whole thing comes in a box, with detailed notes on the material – and selections include "[8] Syllables", originally issued on the Peira Records label; "[9] Syllables", originally issued in the Mnoad label; and the unreleased "For Kenneth Gaburo Part One (acoustic)" and "For Kenneth Gaburo Part Two (electro-acoustic)". ✨✧ Nate WooleyKNKNIGHGH – Minimal Poetry For Aram Saroyan ... CD
Clean Feed (Portugal), 2017. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A record that comes on with the frenzy of an Ornette Coleman Quartet session – and one with a very similar lineup too – given that Nate Wooley is on trumpet, Chris Pitsiokos is on alto, Brandon Lopez is on bass, and Dre Hocevar is on drums! Yet the sound is freer, and bolder too – as the instruments flurry together in clusters, then burst out into incredible sonic territory as the set moves on – with moments that include Wooley blowing fast and tuneful with a mute, like some speed freak Miles Davis – or hitting these popping, punctuated sounds that are really unusual. The record's one that really keeps us on the edge of our seats – and furthers the sense of surprise that can make real jazz improvisation so special! CD

David GrubbsCreep Mission ... LP
Blue Chopsticks, 2017. New Copy ... $18.99
A stunning set from David Grubbs – an artist who's been blowing our minds for decades, and who never ceases to surprise us! This time around, Grubbs mixes longform guitar passages with a slight sense of improvisation at times – adding in trumpet from Nate Wooley on five of the album's seven tracks – and also featuring contributions from Eli Keszler on drums and percussion and Jan St Werner – both of whom get some space on the record. Yet throughout, it's the complexities of Grubbs' guitar sounds that hold the focus – sometimes fuzzy and cyclical, sometimes poetically pointed – and at a few points, maybe slightly abstract – but all with an inherently tuneful, hopeful core that's extremely moving, even in very subtle ways. Titles include "Jeremiadaic", "The Bonapartes Of Baltimore", "Creep Mission", "The C In Certain", and "Return Of The Creep". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Harris Eisenstadt Canada DayOn Parade In Parede ... CD
Clean Feed (Portugal), 2017. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Great work from the Canada Day combo of drummer Harris Eisenstadt – a group that may well be his best in recent years – thanks to a really creative sense of interplay between the musicians! The group features no piano – just the trumpet of Nate Wooley and tenor of Matt Bauder criss-crossing over drums from Harris and bass from Pascal Niggenkemper – in a way that begins with sort of an Ornette Coleman early 60s energy, but quickly takes off into very individual textures and tones – informed both by the song structures provided by Eisenstadt, and the sublime interplay between Wooley and Bauder. Things are never too far out, but always chromatically creative – and titles include "Sometimes You Gotta Ask For What You want", "A Fine Kettle Of Fish", "Innuendo Is Nobody's Friend", and "We All Ate What We Wanted To Eat", in a number of different sections.
