✨✧ Menahan Street BandCrossing (with bonus download) ... LP
Daptone, 2012. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Sublime work from one of the coolest funky combos around – a group who aren't content to just hit the same funky styles as other outfits – and one who really stretch strongly in their pursuit of new sounds! The set's definitely funky – especially on the drums – but there's also this amazing interplay between the horns, weird sounds from the organ, and cool extra touches on auto harp and ukulele – which gives the music these exotic elements that are simply mindblowing! The set's a stone smoker from the start – instrumental, but in ways that let the Menahan Street Band open up way more than when working with a singer – showing us that they've got some of the freshest ideas in the contemporary funky underground. Titles include "The Crossing", "Sleight Of Hand", "Three Faces", "Keep Coming Back", "Seven Is The Wind", "Driftwood", and "Ivory & Blue". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Menahan Street BandExciting Sounds Of Menahan Street Band ... LP
Daptone, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The Menahan Street Band are always pretty exciting to our funk-trained ears – but this time around, there seems to be a little something extra in the mix – a sound that has all these great little strange twists and turns around the edges, while still keeping all the mellow funk of the group's previous records at the core! The production is really special – different than more familiar contemporary funk records – with a wider-ranging sound that almost evokes the funkier styles in older soundtrack or instrumental albums – even though these guys aren't going for a retro-styled vibe at all. Instead, the music is completely fresh, and completely original – served up with a sound that will expand your listening way past El Michels and the Dap Kings – even though the group features members of both. Titles include "The Starchaser", "Rainy Day Lady", "The Duke", "Parlor Trick", "Stepping Through Shadow", "There Was A Man", "Glovebox Patrol", and "Silkworm". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Menahan Street BandMake The Road By Walking ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2008. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A bold slice of work from the Daptone musical universe – a hip project that features work from members of The Dap Kings, El Michels Affair, Budos Band, and Antibalas – all put together with a range of sounds that really show the full spectrum of their styles! The groove's quite unique – even for the ultra-cool Daptone scene – as Menahan Street Band bring in bits of dub, funk, Latin, and Afro-styled sounds to their music – often working with a sense of spareness that seems influenced by 70s Ethiopia, but which comes off with a heavier Wu-inspired sound! There's no vocals at all – just really raw, stark instrumental bits – played on vibes, organ, tenor, flute, piano, trumpet, and some kickass percussion – produced with just the right sort of grit to make all tunes sound great. Titles include "Tired Of Fighting", "Home Again", "Montego Sunset", "The Traitor", "The Contendor", "Birds", "Esma", and "Going The Distance". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Charles BradleyNo Time For Dreaming (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Dunham/Daptone, 2011. Used ... Out Of Stock
Gritty, powerful raw soul from Charles Bradley – the full length debut from the 62-year-old Brooklyn singer – backed perfectly by The Menahan Street Band! It's incredible, a record that sounds just as rawly emotional and impeccably soulful in 2011 as it would have in 1971 – much like the work Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings, there's no mistaking this for anything but the real deal. Rough hewn in beautifully so – with perfect, funky backing by team Menahan. A timeless treasure! Titles include "In You (I Found A Love)", "I Believe In Your Love", "The Telephone Song", "Golden Rule", "How Long", "Trouble In The Land", "Since Our Last Goodbye", "Heartaches And Pain", "The World" and more. Expanded version features two bonus tracks – INCREDIBLE covers of Neil Young's "Heart Of Gold" and Nirvana's "Stay Away". CD

✨✧ Charles BradleyVictim Of Love ... CD
Dunham/Daptone, 2013. Used ... Out Of Stock
Damn amazing work from Charles Bradley – an instant soul classic for all generations, as you'll hear from the very first note! Not only are Bradley's vocals incredible – the kind of once-in-a-long-time approach he brought to his debut – but the backings and production are completely sublime too – magical music from the Menahan Street Band, who sound here like some lost combo from 60s Memphis, but without any of the hoke that reference might imply – instead that really unique approach that you'd only find on one of your few favorite vintage soul albums – maybe Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers, or Jesse James on his 60s album for 20th Century! Yet the sound here isn't just vintage for vintage sake, either – as there's an intensity that's very present, contemporary, and urgent – a sound that doesn't die – and which just gets better and better with each new listen. Tremendous stuff – even from the Daptone universe we've been loving for years and years – with titles that include "Strictly Reserved For You", "You Put The Flame On It", "Dusty Blue", "Love Bug Blues", "Hurricane", "Through The Storm", "Confusion", and "Where Do We Go From Here". ✨✧ Daptone Super Soul RevueDaptone Super Soul Revue – Live At The Apollo (3LP teal vinyl pressing) ... LP
Daptone, 2014. New Copy 3LP ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic presentation of all that's wonderful with the mighty Daptone label – one of the hippest, funkiest record companies of the past few decades – the company that gave the world Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley, and other great artists – all of whom are heard here in an extended length live set! The package documents three nights of music at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem – home to famous live shows by James Brown – whose tight way of presenting a variety of singers is replicated here – as Daptone cycle through some of their hippest acts in the lead, offering up a few songs by each – while the mighty Dap Kings provide all the backing! There's a huge amount of songs by both Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley – plus more by Budos Band, Antibalas, Menahan Street Band, Como Mamas, Sugarman 3, Saun & Starr, and Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens – then everybody comes together to perform a version of "Family Affair" at the end! Binky Griptite acts as the MC for the evening – and the whole thing has a rock-solid sound that's every bit the best that Daptone can offer. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sha La DasLove In The Wind ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2018. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The cover sticker bills this one as sounding like a lost collaboration between the Beach Boys and Delfonics – although for our money, we'd lean a bit more towards the latter – as the Sha La Das have a surprisingly strong approach to harmony soul! Instrumentation and production are much leaner than Brian Wilson ever would have used – more in the Daptone mode you'd expect from the label, and from the great backings from the Menahan Street Band – who are wonderfully restrained here, and really just let the vocals of the quartet shine through in a mighty nice way! None of these guys is as strong as Poogie Hart of The Delfonics (but then again – who could be?) – yet the group really absorbs the best spirit of those days when harmony soul sounded best in a spare indie label setting – which is exactly the way that Daptone presents them. Titles include "Open My Eyes", "Just For A Minute", "Okay My Love", "Those Years Are Over", "Do What", "Carnival", and "You Never Know Whether". LP, Vinyl record album
