Things change up nicely throughout the record – so that some tracks have Fender Rhodes backings from the trio of Masahiko Sato, some have the groovy sound of the Freedom Unity group, and others have larger backings from the New Herd of Toshiyuki Miyama – who gets great arrangements from Norio Maeda! Japanese pianist Masahiko Sato is in a great trinity here – working with European players Peter Warren on bass and Pierre Favre on drums – on two side-long tracks that bristle with imagination! The music was recorded live at Studio 70 in Munich, and has the flow of some of the best free improvisation of the time – these boundless lines on piano from Sato, who's almost in a Cecil Taylor mode, but takes these nice pauses of introspection – while Favre does a great job of holding back, then kicking forth with energy – often in bursts that are nicely unified with Warren's bass. Togashi was part of a new generation of musicians on his scene who were moving past conventional jazz modes – not just the free jazz styles that European improvisers were bringing to the music, but also maybe a more organic approach that was years ahead of its time, and not as widely recognized by the rest of the world until many years later. Togashi himself plays a big range of percussion instruments and vibes next to his drums – and the rest of the group features the great Masahiko Sato on piano, Mototeru Takagi on tenor and bass clarinet, and Yoshio Ikeda on bass – all moving effortlessly through a variety of modes of expression, on titles that include "Presage", "Speed & Space", "Expectation", and "Panorama". The lovely Kim Sang Hee takes on the music of both Tom Jones and Burt Bacharach – in a setting that has her working with nicely different backings for each of the different sources! The Burt Bacharach material is maybe our favorite – as Kim's sweet voice works wonderfully with the small combo backing of pianist Masahiko Sato, who really seems to get the right sense of space and timing for the Bacharach tunes that include "April Fools", "I'll Never Fall In Love Again", "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head", and "This Girl's In Love With You". The Tom Jones material includes a range of different songs associated with Jones, not necessarily written by him – with groovy larger backings from the New Herd of Toshiyuki Miyama, with arrangements by Norio Maeda – on cuts that include "It's Not Unusual", "Little Green Apples", "Delilah", and "Green Green Grass Of Home". A nice early 70s session from Charles Mingus – and in interesting one, to boot – finding the legendary bassist in Japan leading his own group and Toshiyuki Miyama and his New Herd Orchestra! Mingus's American players included Bobbie Jones on tenor and clarinet, Eddie Preston on trumpet. The New Herd featured Masahiko Sato on a prominent piano, and Shigeo Suzuki on alto. Jaki Byard arranged. The epic side "The Man Who Never Sleeps" runs over 16 minutes, and finds group in a restrained combo groove, a very subtle and wonderful tune. The remaining numbers "OP" and "Portrait" are done in a more straight-forward big band mode, but still with a relaxed feel. CD

Don't be mis-led by the title – as this isn't one of those "jazz meets classical" albums that were big on the European scene in the 60s – and instead, the album features very ambitious, very compelling sounds by one of the most free-thinking Japanese ensembles of the time! The album features four long pieces – penned by Masahiko Sato, Hiroshi Takami, Norio Maeda, and Kozaburo Yamaki – all interpreted by Toshiyuki Miyama with a strong sense of sound and texture – an approach that's still rooted in jazz, but which sounds like some of the more modern large group charts of the 60s. The sound isn't free at all, but definitely has some solo moments that are pretty unbridled – save for the last track, which brings back in a funky, swinging sort of vibe! A really beautiful record – one that features just piano and bass – the former from Masahiko Satoh, the latter from Shinichi Kato, as they serve up sublime duets ona mix of standards and more unusual tunes! Both the arrangements and recording quality feel quite fresh – as there's this sense of space in the room that almost recalls an older Three Blind Mice sort of recording, but with the musicians in space that's more personal – really making subtle magic throughout the double-length set, as they spin through versions of "Ode To Sundown", "Bud Powell", "All The Things You Are", "Someday My Prince Will Come", "On Green Dolphin Street", "Stella By Starlight", "The Wind", "Otaru Canal", and "Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud". The intimate nature of the title is very apt on this one – as the album features spare duets between drummer Masahiko Togashi and other Japanese musicians – including the great Sadao Watanabe on flute, and either Masahiko Satoh and Masabumi Kikuchi on piano! The sound is open, and sometimes a bit free – but in a way that's very inventive, and never too overpowering – as Togashi finds a way to really keep things grounded, and work in the best collaborative spirit with each musician. Mighty nice work from singer Ann Burton – one of those jazz vocalists who was almost a secret star in the 70s – continuing a legacy of earlier fame, but through a series of overseas recordings and small label dates that really let her grow creatively and open up fresh territory as an artist! The set features accompaniment from a shifting lineup of Japanese jazz players – and includes some especially nice tenor and flute from Akira Miyazwa, plus piano from Masahiko Satoh and Toshihiko Ogawa, guitar from Sadanori Nakamure, and bass from Kunimitsu Inaba – an especially great player whose round, warm tone really shapes the record. The Japanese scene of the 70s had plenty of experiments that blended contemporary and traditional instrumentation – but this album-length jam from percussionist Stomu Yamashta may well be one of the most striking from the time! You'll no doubt know Stomu from some of his later records that got more global circulation – but this set was originally only issued in Japan, and mixes some of his progressive leaning with a very free jazz sensibility – served up by a quartet that also features Masahiko Satoh on organ, Takehisa Kosugi on electric violin, and Hideakira Sakurai on electric koto, shamisen, and more percussion! Stomu himself is unbound, and plays with a frenzy we've not heard before – and the mix of the other instrumentation, especially koto and shamisen, creates all these really unusual sounds and tones throughout. A beautiful Japanese session from Art Farmer – one that has him working in a combo-plus-strings format that's really nice! The core group features Farmer on flugelhorn, Ron Carter on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Masahiko Satoh on piano and Fender Rhodes – and they're backed up by a larger set of strings conducted by Satoh with a subtle, gentle sort of feel. There's an almost classic feel to most of the tracks, except for the few that have a bit more of an electric keyboard sound – and titles include "Goodbye Porkpie Hat", "Ruby My Dear", "Blue Bossa", "Naima", and "Maiden Voyage".
