Jazzy dancefloor grooves from the legendary Azymuth – with remixes by Theo Parrish and LTJ Xperience – who work some magic on a couple of classic numbers from the Light As Feather record! Both producers are respectful of the original jams – with the spacey soul keys and funky bass on "Avenida Das Mangueiras" in full effect – and a nice club ready beat underneath – courtesy of Theo Parrish. The mighty Sun Ra is on the cover, and also famously named a record Magic City – which was also the nickname of his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama – a city that gets plenty of coverage here for its long musical legacy! Birmingham was given the "magic city" nickname late in the 19th Century, when it was experiencing a great economic boom – one that helped attract folks from all over the south, and made the city a cultural crossroads for many years to come – especially when it came to jazz, where Birmingham was one of the most important scenes in the south for part of the 20th Century. In addition to the relationship between the city and Sun Ra, the book also features a long lineup that includes Joe Guy, Teddy Hill, Erskine Hawkins, Fess Whatley, Avery Parrish, and others – in histories that criss-cross, overlap, and extend with influences far past the city. An album that has reedman Gregory Tardy opening up a whole new chapter in his music – blowing clarinet throughout the record, but with all the soulful depth of his work on tenor! In some ways, Tardy's using the instrument a bit like John Coltrane when he moved to soprano sax – a leaner, more fluid way of expressing himself – often over rhythms that have some modal currents that really let the instrument weave out these beautifully colorful lines! The rest of the group features Taber Gable on piano – a hell of a force who really grounds the proceedings and sets up the groove – plus Regina Carter on violin, Matthew Parrish on bass, and Alvester Garnett on drums. One of Azymuth's best-remembered albums from their American years on Milestone – a really killer classic that beautifully blends Brazilian and American styles of fusion! Tenor giant Houston Person cut many albums over the years at the legendary studios of Rudy Van Gelder – and here, even though Rudy's passed on, Houston's in a very comfortable setting – blowing these wonderfully easygoing-lines on the tenor, with the kind of backing that always seems to have him at his simple, unadorned best! The group's a quintet – with Russell Malone on guitar, Larry Fuller on piano, Matthew Parrish on bass, and Lewis Nash on drums – the latter of whom takes a surprisingly great vocal turn on the tune "Nothing Ever Changes My Love For You" – then leaves Person and the other instrumentalists to do all the "singing" on other tracks – soloing nicely on "Reminiscing At Rudy's", "At Long Last Love", "Again", "Moon River", "I'll Let You Know", and "Put Your Head On My Shoulder".
