A very cool package – one that brings together two rare albums issued alongside the early rise to fame of Mad Magazine – plus rare bonus tracks too! First up is the stunning Musically Mad set, led by Bernie Green – one of the maddest bachelor pad albums to come out on RCA during the late 50s – and it features a nutty set of tunes released in conjunction with Mad Magazine, whose Norman Mingo contributed a fantastic cover painting of Alfred E Neuman! Instrumentation is very percussive-heavy – and there's plenty of odd sound effects, like warbling brass, air-squeezed hands, clanging anvils, crazy voices, and "clinkerated chimes" – all of which makes for a cartoony sound that definitely fits the promise Mad spirit! Titles include "Anvils, Of Course", "Concerto For Two Hands", "Laughing Raymond", "The Green Bee", and "Give Me That Good Old Progressive Jazz". Next is Mad Twists Rock & Roll – maybe the coolest of all the Mad Magazine records from the early days – a set done in collaboration with Big Top Records, as sort of a parody of the rock and roll that label was putting out at the time! Most songs are surprisingly strong rock numbers, but the lyrics are often jokes about the usual themes handled at the time – but given the level of presentation and strength of the overall record, the whole thing maybe just serves to remind us how important novelty records were to the birth of rock and roll! Titles include "She Got A Nose Job", "Let's Do The Pretzel", "Throwing The High School Basketball Game", "Someone Else's Dandruff", "When My Pimples Turned To Dimples", and "Blind Date". An amazing collection of 40s and 50s jazz drawings by Gene Deitch – the complete anthology of his work for legendary jazz magazine Record Changer! Gene was an amazing artist and cartoonist, whose work helped solidify the legacies of some of the most famous cartoon characters in the American pop culture canon – from Popeye, to Tom & Jerry and beyond – but we're especially in love with his jazz-centric Record Changer era! Gene adored jazz and his love for it really shows! Cat On A Hot Thin Groove includes all of his magazine covers, cartoon panels and other bits from Record Changer – versatile work that ranges from fun, cartoon-y panels of "Jazz Cat" characters, to more elaborate and abstract illustrations. Record Culture is even cooler than ever – as this issue comes with a bonus book as well! A loving look back at The Face – one of the most important British magazines of the 80s – and a key outlet for music, style, and all things that had to do with the cutting edge of culture! The Face was a beautiful publication that combined art and criticism – all with a very left-leaning approach during the Thatcher years – and with an aesthetic that rose above the music weeklies like NME, taking things a bit deeper, while also setting a new standard for visual representation in the post-punk, post-disco generation. The long lost 1998 debut from the rubbery electronic jazz dance collective Jaga Jazzist – released for the first time outside of the group's native Norway! The 4 long-ish tracks that make up the original release are far-and-away the earliest material we've heard from the group, and it's great to hear that they had their jazz chops honed to a fine point, even back in the late 90s. The fluid, fluttering sax lines and thick, rubbery bass groove is on board and leading the way for the electronic production. A richly-detailed look at England's Ambassador magazine of the postwar years – a publication devoted to promoting the rise of the British cloth industry, but which had an approach that made it much more like a fashion magazine overall! The book is lovely – heavy, oversize, and overflowing with photographs, images from the publication, and other ephemera – all brought together as part of an exhibition at London's V&A museum. Obviously, the publication was not one that we saw on our shores – but the book brings forth this crucial addition to magazine culture in all its glory – in a heavy hardcover book that's 240 pages in length, with images throughout. There's a big cover feature on The Yardbirds – and the issue also includes equally long articles on The Paley Brothers, The Ascots, Subway Sect, and Novaks Kapelle – plus a very cool comparison of the 60s beat group scenes in Poland and Hungary – all with vintage images and photos in black and white. And we especially love the issue's great recounting of the history of west coast psych act The Moon and related Colours – always a bit of a musical mystery to us – in a huge issue that's got over 150 pages in all, and will keep you reading for weeks to come! Twin pillars of the 60s English scene are on the cover – The Creation and The Artwoods – with a great look at the early years of the former, circa 1966, and an excellent, far-reaching interview with guitarist Derek Griffiths of the latter by publisher/editor Mike Stax. Also includes pieces on the CA Quintet, Fred Neil, The Belles, Stonewall, The Yardbirds in Cyril Jordan's San Francisco Beat and lots more.
