KonKon & The Gang ... LP
BBE (UK), 2016. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $18.99 27.99
A heady set of grooves from Kon – part of the Kon & Amir team you'll know from the famous series of compilations and mix tapes (both On and Off Track!) – stepping out here as a fantastically strong lead artist of his own, with help from a few key guests as well! The set's both a showcase for Kon's own music, and his ability to handle the grooves of others – sometimes with extra mixing skill, sometimes just through his own ability to reach out and bring great sounds together – as he did with his previous collections! The vibe here is a soulful take on club – very much in the spirit of the title and logo, which pay homage to Kool & The Gang – but given a contemporary vibe, in a way that's a nice update of the spirit of the classic cuts that Kon chose for the Off Track series on BBE. Titles include "Can't Get Enough" and "Awe Baby (Medlar rmx)" by Kon, plus "I Promise (Kon rework)" by Doc Daneeka feat Seven Davis Jr, "Do It Well" by Serge Gamesbourg, "Out Of My Head" by Bosq, "Hooked On Ya" by Caserta, "Back 2 Luv" by Eli Escobar feat Steven Klavier, and "I Like To Feel Your Eyes On Me When I Look Away" by Scott Thatmanmonkz featuring J Gordon. VariousKon & Amir – Off Track Vol 1 – The Bronx ... LP
BBE (UK), 1960s/1970s/1980s. New Copy 3LP ... $24.99 27.98
One of the hippest compilations we've heard in years – a treasure trove of rare grooves from legendary crate diggers Kon and Amir! The pair have been known for years from the massive beats in their On Track mixes, and from subsequent reissue singles – but this set has them moving firmly off track, for an even more obscure blend of tracks – all of which show us an even hipper side of the pair's tastes! Amir's selections here are especially great – a wealth of great jazz, Latin, and world-styled grooves – nearly all of which have never been reissued before. Kon's tracks are often a bit more clubby – and together with Amir's, they make for a wonderfully rounded compilation – one that cares little about its own premise or posturing, but works hard to put a wealth of under-discovered grooves on the market. Titles include "Esto Me Gusto" by Juan Demonio, "Tune For LN" by Larry Nozero, "Nestero Ti Patte" by Marius Cultier, "Holding On (Kon's edit)" by Darryl Douglas, "Destroy The Nihilist Picnic" by The London Experimental Jazz Quartet, "Soar" by Claudio Mederios, "Opiniao" by Zelia Barbosa, "Darling I Love You (Kon's edit)" by Jorge Santana, "When I Comes To Loving Me (Kon's edit)" by Executive Suite, "Steel City Disco (Kon's edit)" by Steel City Orchestra, "Country" by Adolphe Parillon, "Douga" by Quintette Guineenne, and "81" by Imp Express. Columbia/Nature Sounds, 1978. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Ronnie Laws may have had the first hit version of "Always There", but Willie Bobo's is a great one too – with a slightly Latin tinge that takes the cut to a whole new level, adding in some extra percussion to make its jazz funk grooves stand up on end! Great pressing – with one side that replicates the original 12" promo mix – and another new funky mix by Kon! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ PretendersJust Be Yourself (ext mix, Kon rmx) ... 12-inch
Family Groove, Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A soaring modern soul tune from The Pretenders – not the famous Ohio Rock group, but an obscure soul act who do a wonderful job of harmonizing along with the groove! "Just Be Yourself" is an uptempo message cut that's totally great – in the more righteous side of the disco spectrum, with a heavenly vibe that's really wonderful! The single features both a version of the tune that's nicely extended past the original 7" release – and a remix by Kon that adds in these soaring strings, for even more of a classic club vibe! 12-inch, Vinyl record

BosqBosq Y Orquesta De Madera ... LP
Ubiquity, 2013. Near Mint- 2LP ... $14.99
A really wonderful set of grooves – much richer, jazzier, and more soulful than we would have expected – and a great full length introduction to the work of Bosq! Bosq's a name that's been brimming around on singles recently – but on this full album, he really opens up with a wonderfully deep groove – one that's inspired by older styles of jazz, Latin, Brazilian, and even Afro Funk modes – but put together in ways that often mix organic and live instrumentation with some studio production too – yet always at a level that still retains all the warmth of the elements at the core! These are some of the best sounds we've heard from Ubiquity in awhile, and the record's a real return to the mix of classic and contemporary that first made us fall in love with the label. The set features guest work from Kon, Tita Lima, Kaleta, and others – and titles include "More Heavy", "Up & Down (NYC 91 mix)", "Tear It Out", "Getting There", "Movin On", "Pura Candela", "Paciencia De Jo", "Never Feel Cold", and "Get Involved". Grand Slam with Gary Mudbone CooperFunk Cruisin' – The Neverending Voyage (includes bonus DVD) ... LP
TNT Productions (Germany), 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $21.99
A contemporary group from overseas, but one who've drank heavily from the George Clinton P-Funk brew of the 70s – and found a great way to bring the sound forward for the 21st Century! The work here is very much in the best late P-Funk mode – bassy, but never too uptight – played live with a great flourish that really shows the camaraderie of the group as a whole, and their love of trading licks back and forth with effortless ease! Much of the groove is instrumental – at times, vocals almost feel like an afterthought next to the instrumental jams – but Gary Mudbone Cooper, of P-Funk fame, does sing on a few tracks, as do other group members too. Titles include "Get On Down", "A Little Mo'Fun", "Camp Down", "Chillin With My People", "New Crack Swing", "Funky Juices", "Time 2 Get Paid", "Kon Air", "Drunk Cruisin", and "Soul Machine". Features a full concert DVD too! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ MF DoomMM Food ... LP
Rhymesayers, 2004/2007. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The bugged sci fi maestro MF Doom's mid 00s masterpiece – tied up and unavailable for a couple years – and a straight up tie with Madvilliany for the championship title of best Doom-related LP since his immortal debut! As you'd guess from the title, this album has a running theme with food, each title funnier than the last, but stays fresh throughout the 15 tracks thanks to tight production, masterfully spliced samples, and a verbal flow that's cooked and spiced to some kind of freakish perfection. The great "Hoe Cakes" single gets served early in set, and it sets the tone for a truly strong album. "Boss like King Koopa. . .". Includes "Beef Rap", "Potholderz" with Count Bass D, "One Beer" produced by Madlib, "Poo Poo Platter", "Fillet-O-Rapper", "Gumbo", "Fig Leaf Bi Carbonate", "Kon Queso" produced by PNS, "Vomitspit", "Kookies" and more. ✨✧ AntibalasAntibalas ... CD
Daptone, 2012. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Amazing sounds from one of the best funky combos anywhere – ever! Antibalas have certainly risen to fame in the years since we first heard their Afro-styled grooves – working famously in the Fela musical, and reaching generations of ears with their own brilliant records. Yet throughout it all, they've always stayed true to their sound – and, if anything, are even sharper, tighter, and funkier than before – all extremely adept not only at playing their instruments, but at hitting the right sort of sound to cut through all the BS that was holding back funky Afro grooves for years! Part of that sound comes from superb Daptone production by Gabriel Roth – who really knows how to keep things lean and mean and full of energy. But the core credit really goes to the group – who never cease to amaze us here – and continually come up with fresh sounds on their keyboards and horns – and inventive rhythms to match! Titles include "Dirty Money", "The Rat Catcher", "Ari Degbe", "Ibeji", "Sare Kon Kon", and "Him Belly No Go Sweet". CD

Stones Throw, 2007. New Copy ... $12.99
The long awaited sides C & D in Madlib's incredible blend of Bombay soundtrack-styled funk, blunted Eastern beats, and all round stunning Middle Eastern accented hip hop instros! This time out Madlib, er, Beat Konducta is conducting beats, strings & things from India and/or otherwise East – but the way in which the beats bluntly thump is quintessential Madlib – you know it and love it from the first beat! 'Lib really breathes fresh life into this approach – going miles deeper than anyone out there doing the Bollywood-hip hop hybrid – coming up with a sound all his own. Amazing! "Get It Right", "More Rice", "Indian Bells", "Club Scene", "Duel", "Organ Stroll", "In The Cave", "Malfunction", "Victory", "Smoke Circle", "Raw Ground Wire", "New Bombay", "Shah Sound", "Another Getaway", and more. Johnny CashKoncert V Praze (In Prague-Live) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Legacy, 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.98
The Man In Black behind the Iron Curtain! The show was recorded live in Prague in 1978 – finding Johnny backed not only by his impeccable Tenessee Three, but it also features the chorus from The Johnny Cash Show – making it much more than a typical concert. The cultural gravity weighs strongly on the performances, without weighing the set down. A warmly charismatic concert from waning near end of the Cold War era. A great setlist of Cash classics, including "Ring Of Fire", "I Still Miss Someone", "Sunday Morning Coming Down", "I Walk The Line", "Casey Jones, "Hey Porter", "Wabash Cannonball", "City Of New Orleans", "I Still Miss Someone" and more. ClusterKonzerte 1972/1977 (with bonus CD) ... LP
Bureau B (Germany), 1972/1977. New Copy ... $22.99
Long loopy live performances from Cluster – captured in two different sets from the 70s, both of which are maybe even more abstract than their studio material of the time! The first half of the set is from 1972 – and features the duo really spacing out on electronics – allowing waves of analogue sound to open up in a wonderful way – pulsating with frequencies that really tie them to some of the more academic experimenters of the previous decade, but handled with that more down-to-earth charm that made them so important in the 70s. The second half is from five years later, and maybe has some of the cooler, calmer elements of the Sky Records years – yet still with a more open-ended abstract quality that's mighty nice. That performance was done for the International Festival of Science Fiction – and it's definitely got a sound to match! LP, Vinyl record album

Instinct, 1998. Used ... $6.99
While most collaborations between hip hop producers and jazz players have been mediocre at best, neither really being able to get invloved enough in each other's music, this collaboration between Kondo and Krush is almost entirely successful. Kondo's played in just about every style from all out free jazz to hard bop, and Krush's spare and slightly abstract approach to both the turntables and with his beats creates just the right backdrop. We got open on "Ha Doh", "Sun Is Shining", "Fu Yu" and "Ki gen". 13 tracks in all. CD

KinksKink Kontroversy ... LP
Reprise, 1966. Near Mint- ... $43.99
Ray Davies is really coming into his own by the time of this third album by The Kinks – penning almost all the tunes in the set, and really starting to stretch out with some of his more unique ideas! The songs are already beginning to show that picture postcard side of British pop that was the Kinks stock in trade during their best years – and the themes and subjects are really expanded from the group's music of the previous years – already shaking off their American influence, and bringing the world a decidedly English version of rock and roll. Of course, the album does feature the group's wonderful cover of "Milk Cow Blues" – still a nice link to the earlier years – plus the Davies originals "When I See That Girl Of Mine", "I Am Free", "Till The End Of The Day", "The World Keeps Going Round", "I'm On An Island", "It's Too Late", "You Can't Win", "Where Have All The Good Times Gone", "Gotta Get The First Plane Home", and "Ring The Bells". Strut (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
Very cool sounds from a wonderful pairing of sources – the ancient African thumb piano and contemporary funky production – at a level that's almost a 21st Century update of the American 70s kalimba experiments by Phil Cohran and Earth Wind & Fire! There's moments here that definitely seem to evoke the latter's mix of kalimba and clubby grooves – but in a much more stripped-down way that puts the instrument strongly upfront, to carry most of the tune – while very tasteful beats and basslines set up a groove! The mode might sound hokey – and in the wrong hands it could be – but the approach is wonderful here, and very much in the best legacy of the older Afro Funk reissues we've loved from the Strut label. Titles include "Yeanoh", "Thank You Mama", "Belle Wahalla", "Titi Dem Too Service", "Don Don Mi Money", "Kondi Instrumental", "You Wan Married", "Thogolobea (LV rmx)", "Y'Alimamy (Chief Boima rmx)", and "Without Money No Family (Chief Boima rmx)". Toshinori KondoTaihen (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Polydor/Solid (Japan), 1984. New Copy ... $22.99
One of those really unique records that trumpeter Toshinori Kondo gave us in the 80s – not really fusion, but not avant either all – yet a very unusual criss-crossing of electric and acoustic impulses, with a vibe that's all its own! Kondo's clearly drawing a bit of inspiration from the younger, artier crowd that was transforming other areas of music – and if he were in the US, we might say the whole thing had a downtown New York vibe – partly because Bill Laswell's working on the record, and adds in some tapes – alongside Kondo's work on trumpet, voice, toys, and "little instruments" – with Rodney Drummer on bass, Cecil Monroe on drums, and Yoshinori Teramae and Tiazo Sakai on guitars. Titles include "Taihen", "The Day After", "Takao Blue", "A Song For Buddha", and "Oiwake". CD also features two bonus Bill Laswell special mixes – of "Taihen" and "Shosuke San". CD

Trumpeter Toshinori Kondo may have cut some avant-oriented material over the years – but this set is a different sort of record – one that's cut with his Tibetan Blue Air Liquid Band, in a playful mix of rhythms, tones, and jazz! The approach is maybe post-fusion, inflected with a bit of art rock inspiration – still with plenty of jazz-based solos, but also a very unconventional approach to the rhythms, which are sometimes sunny and bright, sometimes a bit more edgey.
