✨✧ KonKon & The Gang ... LP
BBE (UK), 2016. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A heady set of grooves from Kon – part of the Kon & Amir team you'll know from the famous series of compilations and mix tapes (both On and Off Track!) – stepping out here as a fantastically strong lead artist of his own, with help from a few key guests as well! The set's both a showcase for Kon's own music, and his ability to handle the grooves of others – sometimes with extra mixing skill, sometimes just through his own ability to reach out and bring great sounds together – as he did with his previous collections! The vibe here is a soulful take on club – very much in the spirit of the title and logo, which pay homage to Kool & The Gang – but given a contemporary vibe, in a way that's a nice update of the spirit of the classic cuts that Kon chose for the Off Track series on BBE. Titles include "Can't Get Enough" and "Awe Baby (Medlar rmx)" by Kon, plus "I Promise (Kon rework)" by Doc Daneeka feat Seven Davis Jr, "Do It Well" by Serge Gamesbourg, "Out Of My Head" by Bosq, "Hooked On Ya" by Caserta, "Back 2 Luv" by Eli Escobar feat Steven Klavier, and "I Like To Feel Your Eyes On Me When I Look Away" by Scott Thatmanmonkz featuring J Gordon. Willie BoboAlways There (12 inch version, Kon's Kick The Bobo Remix) ... 12-inch
Columbia/Nature Sounds, 1978. New Copy ... $12.99
Ronnie Laws may have had the first hit version of "Always There", but Willie Bobo's is a great one too – with a slightly Latin tinge that takes the cut to a whole new level, adding in some extra percussion to make its jazz funk grooves stand up on end! Great pressing – with one side that replicates the original 12" promo mix – and another new funky mix by Kon! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ VariousKon & Amir – Off Track Vol 1 – The Bronx ... LP
BBE (UK), 1960s/1970s/1980s. New Copy 3LP ... $24.99 27.98
One of the hippest compilations we've heard in years – a treasure trove of rare grooves from legendary crate diggers Kon and Amir! The pair have been known for years from the massive beats in their On Track mixes, and from subsequent reissue singles – but this set has them moving firmly off track, for an even more obscure blend of tracks – all of which show us an even hipper side of the pair's tastes! Amir's selections here are especially great – a wealth of great jazz, Latin, and world-styled grooves – nearly all of which have never been reissued before. Kon's tracks are often a bit more clubby – and together with Amir's, they make for a wonderfully rounded compilation – one that cares little about its own premise or posturing, but works hard to put a wealth of under-discovered grooves on the market. Titles include "Esto Me Gusto" by Juan Demonio, "Tune For LN" by Larry Nozero, "Nestero Ti Patte" by Marius Cultier, "Holding On (Kon's edit)" by Darryl Douglas, "Destroy The Nihilist Picnic" by The London Experimental Jazz Quartet, "Soar" by Claudio Mederios, "Opiniao" by Zelia Barbosa, "Darling I Love You (Kon's edit)" by Jorge Santana, "When I Comes To Loving Me (Kon's edit)" by Executive Suite, "Steel City Disco (Kon's edit)" by Steel City Orchestra, "Country" by Adolphe Parillon, "Douga" by Quintette Guineenne, and "81" by Imp Express. ✨✧ PretendersJust Be Yourself (ext mix, Kon rmx) ... 12-inch
Family Groove, Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A soaring modern soul tune from The Pretenders – not the famous Ohio Rock group, but an obscure soul act who do a wonderful job of harmonizing along with the groove! "Just Be Yourself" is an uptempo message cut that's totally great – in the more righteous side of the disco spectrum, with a heavenly vibe that's really wonderful! The single features both a version of the tune that's nicely extended past the original 7" release – and a remix by Kon that adds in these soaring strings, for even more of a classic club vibe! 12-inch, Vinyl record

AntibalasAntibalas (with bonus download) ... LP
Daptone, 2012. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Amazing sounds from one of the best funky combos anywhere – ever! Antibalas have certainly risen to fame in the years since we first heard their Afro-styled grooves – working famously in the Fela musical, and reaching generations of ears with their own brilliant records. Yet throughout it all, they've always stayed true to their sound – and, if anything, are even sharper, tighter, and funkier than before – all extremely adept not only at playing their instruments, but at hitting the right sort of sound to cut through all the BS that was holding back funky Afro grooves for years! Part of that sound comes from superb Daptone production by Gabriel Roth – who really knows how to keep things lean and mean and full of energy. But the core credit really goes to the group – who never cease to amaze us here – and continually come up with fresh sounds on their keyboards and horns – and inventive rhythms to match! Titles include "Dirty Money", "The Rat Catcher", "Ari Degbe", "Ibeji", "Sare Kon Kon", and "Him Belly No Go Sweet". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Grand Slam with Gary Mudbone CooperFunk Cruisin' – The Neverending Voyage (CD & DVD) ... CD
TNT Productions (Germany), 2017. Used CD & DVD ... $11.99
A contemporary group from overseas, but one who've drank heavily from the George Clinton P-Funk brew of the 70s – and found a great way to bring the sound forward for the 21st Century! The work here is very much in the best late P-Funk mode – bassy, but never too uptight – played live with a great flourish that really shows the camaraderie of the group as a whole, and their love of trading licks back and forth with effortless ease! Much of the groove is instrumental – at times, vocals almost feel like an afterthought next to the instrumental jams – but Gary Mudbone Cooper, of P-Funk fame, does sing on a few tracks, as do other group members too. Titles include "Get On Down", "A Little Mo'Fun", "Camp Down", "Chillin With My People", "New Crack Swing", "Funky Juices", "Time 2 Get Paid", "Kon Air", "Drunk Cruisin", and "Soul Machine". Features a full concert DVD too! CD

Alexandra Grimal with Lee Konitz & Gary PeacockOwls Talk ... CD
Marge (France), 2010. Used ... $19.99
Apart from his own fantastic work on alto sax, one of the things that always makes Lee Konitz great is his willingness to collaborate with other players – especially fresh-voiced modernists of a younger generation! This set's a perfect example of that tendency – as Lee's wonderful tone and sense of timing are a perfect match for the tenor and soprano sax talents of Alexandra Grimal, a player we'd never heard before, but who really blossoms here in the company of Konitz – thanks, no doubt, to some fluid and mellow rhythm work from the team of Gary Peacock on bass and Paul Motian on drums, both players who have a naturally understated quality that works well with the horns! The tracks are often quite short, and beautiful explorations of sound – and titles include "Awake", "Horus", "Breathing Through", "Melodie Pour Joao", "Dance", "Ah", and "December Green Wings". CD

Rex KonaWild Orchids – Exotic Sounds Of Rex Kona & His Mandarins ... LP
Columbia, Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Wonderful stuff – way more than just an easy instrumental album, and a great batch of exotic tunes with lots of jazzy touches! There's enough of the Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman influence here – but Rex and group take the sound a lot further, by playing like a true small combo, and swinging the tunes with a heck of a lot more jazz than you'd expect. Grooves are nice, and get quite Latiny at times – and the feel of the record almost reminds us of some of Bobby Montez work for Pacific Jazz in the late 50s. Titles include "Ginza Girl", "Sushi", "Patricia", "Wild Orchids", "Bird Train", "Bushi Bushi", and "Will He Like Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Kondi BandSalone ... CD
Strut (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
Very cool sounds from a wonderful pairing of sources – the ancient African thumb piano and contemporary funky production – at a level that's almost a 21st Century update of the American 70s kalimba experiments by Phil Cohran and Earth Wind & Fire! There's moments here that definitely seem to evoke the latter's mix of kalimba and clubby grooves – but in a much more stripped-down way that puts the instrument strongly upfront, to carry most of the tune – while very tasteful beats and basslines set up a groove! The mode might sound hokey – and in the wrong hands it could be – but the approach is wonderful here, and very much in the best legacy of the older Afro Funk reissues we've loved from the Strut label. Titles include "Yeanoh", "Thank You Mama", "Belle Wahalla", "Titi Dem Too Service", "Don Don Mi Money", "Kondi Instrumental", "You Wan Married", "Thogolobea (LV rmx)", "Y'Alimamy (Chief Boima rmx)", and "Without Money No Family (Chief Boima rmx)". Toshinori KondoTaihen (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Polydor/Solid (Japan), 1984. New Copy ... $22.99
One of those really unique records that trumpeter Toshinori Kondo gave us in the 80s – not really fusion, but not avant either all – yet a very unusual criss-crossing of electric and acoustic impulses, with a vibe that's all its own! Kondo's clearly drawing a bit of inspiration from the younger, artier crowd that was transforming other areas of music – and if he were in the US, we might say the whole thing had a downtown New York vibe – partly because Bill Laswell's working on the record, and adds in some tapes – alongside Kondo's work on trumpet, voice, toys, and "little instruments" – with Rodney Drummer on bass, Cecil Monroe on drums, and Yoshinori Teramae and Tiazo Sakai on guitars. Titles include "Taihen", "The Day After", "Takao Blue", "A Song For Buddha", and "Oiwake". CD also features two bonus Bill Laswell special mixes – of "Taihen" and "Shosuke San". CD

Art Union/Solid (Japan), 1983. New Copy ... $22.99
Trumpeter Toshinori Kondo may have cut some avant-oriented material over the years – but this set is a different sort of record – one that's cut with his Tibetan Blue Air Liquid Band, in a playful mix of rhythms, tones, and jazz! The approach is maybe post-fusion, inflected with a bit of art rock inspiration – still with plenty of jazz-based solos, but also a very unconventional approach to the rhythms, which are sometimes sunny and bright, sometimes a bit more edgey. Titles include "Raku Raku Raku", "Light Footwork Song", "7 Time", "A Crack In The Sky", and "Setouchi Blue". CD

Early work by Kongas – recorded in France in the mid 70's, but released by Salsoul in the US in 1978. The group have an Afro Funk approach, filtered through more of a disco groove – long tracks with percussion and tribal touches, very rhythmically grooving all the way through. The album won't make you replace your Fela albums, but it does have some nice moments – and tracks include "Jungle", "Anikana-O", "Kongas Fun", and "Bongos Go". LP, Vinyl record album

Lee KonitzFigure & Spirit (with bonus track) ... CD
Progressive, 1976. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
A subtle 70s gem from the great Lee Konitz – a record that almost returns to the spare, simple, sublime sound of his best 50s recordings – but with a few more modern edges too! Lee's alto is superb throughout – every bit as sharp as when we love it the best – and the tenor of Ted Brown provides wonderful counterpoint at many spots, moving with Lee a bit like Warne Marsh – but with a sound that shows all the lessons that both players have learned over the years. Rhythm is from a well-chosen trio of younger players, who always seem expectant to new directions – Albert Dailey on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums – and titles include "Figure & Spirit", "Dream Stepper", "Smog Eyes", "April", "Without You Man", and "Dig It". CD features the bonus track "Feather Bed". CD

Lee KonitzInside Hi-Fi ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1956. New Copy ... $9.99
A gem by Lee Konitz – one of his near-perfect 50s sessions for Atlantic! Lee's tone here is crisp, clear, and hauntingly fresh – modern, yet never academically so – and played with a dexterity that's incredible, but never too in love with itself to go too far. Key players on the session include guitarist Billy Bauer on side one, and bassist Peter Ind and pianist Sal Mosca on side two – both artists who fit Lee's vision perfectly, matching tone and color beautifully. Titles include great readings of "Star Eyes" and "Everything Happens To Me" – plus Konitz tunes "Kary's Trance" and "Cork N Bib" – and a reading of Peter Ind's "Nesuhi's Instant". CD

Lee KonitzLive At Laren ... CD
Soul Note (Italy), 1979. Used ... $4.99
A cool European set from Lee Konitz – quite different than some of his other material recorded overseas at the time, with a swinging, upbeat feel that's totally great! The group's a nonet – a large ensemble that features Lee on alto and soprano sax, with Ronnie Cuber on baritone, Kimmy Kneper on trombone, Red Rodney on trumpet, and Sam Burtis on bass trombone. The arrangements for the horns are really wonderful – kind of echoing an older west coast mode, but with lots of the new modernisms that Konitz picked up during the late 60s and 70s – forged into some beautiful tunes that sparkle with fresh changes, great solos, and a compelling dynamic energy. Rhythm is from Ben Aronov on electric and acoustic piano, Ray Drummond on bass, and Billy Hart on drums – and titles include "Moon Dreams", "April", "Who You", "Without A Song", "Times Lie", and "Matrix". Lee KonitzReal Lee Konitz ... LP
Atlantic, 1957. Near Mint- ... $11.99
The title definitely gets it right – as this is the real sound of Lee Konitz – the kind of extra-special approach to alto sax that made Lee one of the true modern giants of the 50s, with an approach that nobody had ever heard before! The album captures Konitz at the height of his powers – working in an amazing group with the great Billy Bauer on guitar, whose clean tones are as perfectly formed as Lee's raspier notes on alto – both of them a perfect model of human expression, but without overstating themselves – and held together by the beautiful bass of Peter Ind, who also recorded the record. Dick Scott provides some subtle drums, and trumpeter Don Ferrara steps in on a few cuts – but the real core of the album is the interplay between Bauer and Konitz – which is completely sublime. Konitz's incredible tone come through perfectly, with a purity that's often missing from other, later albums – and titles include "Pennies In Minor", "Midway", "Straightaway", "You Go To My Head", "My Melancholy" and "Foolin Myself".
