A really fantastic record from Chicago percussion legend Kahil El'Zabar – and one that features plenty of guest work on tenor from David Murray, a musician who always seems to be a perfect match for the musical ideas of Kahil! And the leader also steps out with a great side of his talents on the record too – as El'Zabar sings on a number of tracks – something he doesn't do often, but which always makes for a really special sound when he does – a vibe that's almost as if you've picked up some righteous record from the early 70s, in a really cool blend of jazz, soul, and message-oriented themes! The rest of the group features Emma Dayhuff on bass and Justin Dillard on piano and organ – and as usual, Kahil plays a huge range of percussion instruments, always inventively – and creating a richly organic setting that also seems to bring out the best in David Murray too. Kahil El'Zabar's working here with the Infinity Orchestra – a very large ensemble of musicians from the south of France – pulled together by Kahil for this special performance! A core trio of Americans is at the lead – El'Zabar on percussion, Ernest Dawkins on alto, and Joseph Bowie on trombone – but the larger group supports their work wonderfully with a full complement of saxes, trumpets, and trombones – and a huge amount of African percussion that creates a very earthy feel. There's a few vocal moments on the set too, as well as a slightly unfortunate use of turntable work too – and titles include "Soul To Groove", "Nu Art Claiming Earth", "Return Of The Lost Tribe", and "Speaking In Tongues". A really wonderful recording from percussionist Kahil El'Zabar and his Ritual Trio – a set that features our favorite incarnation of the group – with the mighty Malachi Favors on bass, and Ari Brown on both soprano sax and piano! Tracks are all nice and long, and build in that beautifully spiritual style that made Kahil one of the real standouts on the Chicago scene in the period – one of the few cats who didn't just go avant for freedom's sake, and instead worked in this open, flowing, soulful style that nobody else was touching at the time! The title cut's a great illustration of this approach – a really beautiful 16 minute cut that draws gentle modal energy from interplay between bass and kalimba, then lets Brown really stretch out over the top – and the other tracks follow strongly, with a wonderfully organic approach. The group features fantastic work on woodwinds from both Light Henry Huff and Ed Wilkerson – the former playing soprano sax, the latter on tenor – mixing gently in sublime tones over Kahil's work on drums and percussion, which includes some beautiful kalimba too! In the best AACM tradition, all players handle other instruments too – Huff some harp and percussion, Wilkerson piano and additional woodwinds – improvising in these soulful styles over the cours of the album-length track "Impressions", which is divided up into seven different passages. An overlooked gem from trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith – an early 80s session, but one that we'd rank with some of his most-together work ever! The album's a mixture of spare modes and some surprising group elements – a set that often has Smith blowing beautifully on trumpet or flugelhorn, alongside the vibes of Bobby Naughton and percussion of Kahil El Zabar – the latter of whom makes a strong, spiritual appearance here – really helping to shade in some strong sounds to Leo's music. Naughton's vibes are great too – very angular and chromatic, with the sharpness of Bobby Hutcherson's avant work of the mid 60s – and one track features John Powell on tenor, and two more have Louis Myers on guitar – bringing in these weird harmelodic bluesy tones which then accompany vocals from Smith! Titles include "Nuru Light", "The Flower That Seeds The Earth", "Jah Jah Is The Perfect Love", "Procession Of The Great Ancestry", and "Third World Grainery Of Pure Earth". CD

In addition to a look at composer/producer Bobby Krlic, aka The Haxan Cloak, on the cover – the issue features articles on singer/songwriter Linda Smith, Angolan DJ Znobia, and electronic wizard Ariel Kalma – plus more on Univers Zero, Billy Bultheel, Lumpeks, Yosuhiro Moringa, John Pope, and the scene in Santiago! We think this guy's one of the best new jazz vocalist to emerge over the past decade, and this album – his 4th for Blue Note – is far and away his best! The album was recorded live at Chicago's Green Mill nightclub – with nice small combo backing by Laurence Hobgood, Rob Amster, and Michael Raynor, plus guest horn work by Von Freeman, Eddie Johnson, and Ed Peterson. Kahil El'Zabar also plays percussion, and Jon Hendricks joins in on vocals a bit. But the best part is Elling's voice – which is a sweet mix between Mark Murphy at his best, and earlier vocalese masters, like Hendricks or Joe Lee Wilson. The album features mostly straight-ahead jazz vocalizing – with little of the hipster monologues that have ruined other Elling albums – and it includes an incredible version of Wayne Shorter's "Night Dreamer", plus the cuts "Oh My God", "Esperanto", "My Foolish Heart", "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", and the King Pleasure classic "Don't Get Scared". A real treat – especially if you like Cleveland Watkiss' Green Chimneys album, or any of the good Mark Murphy recordings for Muse! CD

Beautifully spiritual work from this obscure Chicago group from the late 70s – an AACM ensemble, and quite possibly one of the most soulful we've ever heard! There's a really spare, earthy approach to the work here – one that uses percussion, piano, and saxes from Light Henry Huff – plus beautiful male and female vocals, in a range of spare tunes that build up from the bottom, and flow out with joy and life. The album's not nearly as "out" as you'd expect, given its AACM roots – and has a feeling that's much more in the spirit of groups like Oneness Of Juju, The Pyramids, or Descendents Of Mike & Phoebe – mixing righteous solo passages with a well-conceived approach to the music that holds together wonderfully throughout. Kahil El Zabar is in the group on congas and vocals, and titles include "Soul Flower", "Rasta", "Live Without Fear", "Bright Tune", "Father Spirit Mother Love", and "Children's Song". CD
