Jimmy McGriff & Junior ParkerGood Things Don't Happen Every Day (aka Dudes Doin Business) ... CD
Groove Merchant/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
Sweet funky blues from the team of Junior Parker and Jimmy McGriff – coming together here in a way that's even groovier than some of their previous work! Junior's got a sweet approach to the lyrics that grooves nicely with Jimmy's Hammond – and the set's got some full and soulful arrangements by Horace Ott that really tighten things up nicely – getting past any of the blues cliches that might ruin things, and instead going for that lean groove that McGriff was really hitting at the end of the 60s! There's more of a soul vibe than a blues one going on most of the time – and titles include "Workin", "Inner Light", "Losing Battle", "Drownin On Dry Land", and "It Ain't What'cha Got". CD

Junior ParkerYou Don't Have To Be Black To Love The Blues ... CD
Groove Merchant/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
A fitting title to this one – as it virtually describes the standard that the blues business was operating on during the early 70s – as artists came out of the shadows and found big audiences on college campuses, rock clubs, and other crossover scenes! The concept is carried to the Nth degree on the cover – which has a front image of a young Asian boy eating a big watermelon, Sambo-style – and the back cover features notes that say things like "Chinese kids like watermelon, Irish like bagels, black people like Jewish rye, and today everybody loves the Blues." Fortunately, this comic packaging doesn't affect the album too much – as Junior's still in the fine form he was at the end of the 60s, cruising between blues and soul, with a slight touch of jazz, in a unique way that sounds better to our ears than the work of most of his contemporaries. Titles include "Five Long Years", "That's Alright", "Way Back Home", "Man Or Mouse", and "I Like Your Style". CD

✨✧ Junior ParkerHoney-Drippin' Blues ... LP
Blue Rock, Late 60s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Killer work from Junior Parker – an artist who was already great in his early Duke Records years – but one who really seemed to take off even more as the 60s moved on! On records like this, Parker picks up a strong undercurrent of funky soul – a groove that's a perfect fit for Mercury's Blue Rock label – which often did a great job of merging the worlds of blues and soul – especially in the music of Junior Wells. Production has lots of nice Chicago soul touches, and at times Junior's vocals move into a territory that's almost a bit like the groove of Tyrone Davis at the time. Great stuff throughout – and titles include "I Got Money", "Lovin Man On Your Hands", "Easy Lovin", and "I'm So Satisfied". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing. Cover has mostly split top & bottom seams, cutout hole.)

✨✧ Junior ParkerLove Ain't Nothin' But A Business Goin' On (aka Outside Man) ... CD
Groove Merchant/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the funkiest albums ever from Junior Parker – a great little set that shows he had a lot more to offer than just the average bluesman! The album's got a nice little soul sound in the backings – tight rhythms from Horace Ott, who nicely avoids a lot of the cliches that the blues business was hitting at the time – in order to keep Junior in hip territory that's filled with breaking drums and heavy basslines! There's a few key crossover tracks here, plus some surprisingly sweeter numbers – and the album's a gem through and through – well-appreciated by new generations over the years, thanks to its diversity of tracks! Titles include a great break version of "Taxman" – plus two more Beatles numbers, "Tomorrow Never Knows" and "Lady Madonna" – and the tracks "Outside Man", "Darling Depend On Me", "You Know I Love You", "River's Invitation", and "Just To Hold My Hand". Jaki ByardFreedom Together ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1966. Used ... $24.99
A beautiful bit of insanity that properly displays why we think Jaki Byard is one of the greatest overlooked talents of the 60's! Jaki plays here not just on his usual piano – but also electric piano, celeste, vibes, and even a bit of tenor – shifting wonderfully to match the spirit of his changing moods on the set – and working with superb backing from the team of Richard Davis (on both bass and cello) and Alan Dawson (on drums, vibes, and tympani). Junior Parker joins in on the record – singing on 2 tracks on the set plus playing the unusual "lagerphone" – and arrangements are very weird, with a memorable mix of modernist ideas, all handled with the down-to-earth sensibility that made Byard so great. Titles include "Ode To Prez", "Nocturne For Contrabass", "Freedom Together", and a great version of "Young At Heart", cut a few years before Muhal Richard Abrams did his nutty version! CD
(Out of print, crease through traycard artwork.)

VariousBear Family Rocks ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 1950s/Early 1960s. New Copy ... $15.99 20.99
A hot host of killer rockabilly, R&B, and other smoking styles from the late 50s and early 60s – all pulled together in tribute to the long-running Rocks series from Bear Family records! The package has 30 tracks in all, the the blend of artists is really great, and shows just how much blues, R&B, and other pre-soul styles were important on the scene next to the rising wave of rockabilly and other early rock styles. And in fact, the package probably has more from those worlds of music than you'd expect from an collection that foregrounds the word "rock" – key proof that the name was initially lifted from black music, then used to peddle white pop as the years went on. Features work from The Treniers, Roy Milton, Little Junior Parker, Ella Mae Morse, Arthur Crudup, The Drifters, 5 Royales, Shirley & Lee, Amos Milburn, Lloyd Price, Slim Harp, Clyde McPhatter, Louis Prima, and many others! VariousLet It Be – Black America Sings Lennon, McCartney, & Harrison ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Think The Beatles only had an impact on rock and pop fans in the America of the 60s? Think again – because their music had an undeniable impact on soul as well – as you'll here from this wonderful range of remakes of classic cuts from the Fab Four! The work here is a real surprise if you don't know the legacy – but it also really makes sense once you're reminded of the mind-expanding, ear-opening territory the group hit in the latter half of the 60s – and working with themes of social change, alienation, and personal longing – of the sort that turn out to be perfect for new interpretations in soul! Most of these cuts are way more than standard cover versions, too – as the arrangements are really inventive, and take off in bold new directions that make the songs very much new properties overall. Most of the work here is from the late 60s and early 70s – and as always with Ace Records, the notes and presentation really put the music in context! Titles include "The Fool On The Hill" by The Four Tops, "Dear Prudence" by The Five Stairsteps, "For No One" by Maceo & The King's Men, "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window" by Ike & Tina Turner, "Tomorrow Never Knows" by Junior Parker, "Got To Get You Into My Life" by Earth Wind & Fire, "Do You Want To Know A Secret" by Mary Wells, "Lovely Rita" by Fats Domino, "With A Little Help From My Friends" by The Undisputed Truth, "Savoy Truffle" by Ella Fitzgerald, and "Let It Be" by Bill Withers. VariousWe Can Work It Out – Covers Of The Beatles 1962 to 1966 (3CD set) ... CD
Strawberry (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3CDs ... $28.99 34.99
The Beatles weren't just the biggest recording act on the scene in the mid 60s, they were also probably the most influential from a songwriting perspective too – such that countless other groups, singers, and musicians picked up their songs and gave them a try, including some tracks that The Beatles never recorded themselves! These aren't just hack cover versions, though – as the artists here clearly love the Fab Four, and are dedicated to unlocking ways that the music inspires them, and makes them seek their own expressions too – expressions that are presented here in full force, in a very cool package that mixes up rock, soul, jazz, folk, and other styles too – all in a massive 85 track set, with very detailed notes. Artists include Jackie Lynton, Marilyn Powell, The Merseymen, Dick Rivers, Mary Wells, Duffy Power, The Coterie, Mark Wynter, Strawberry Fair, Brotherhood, The Buckinghams, Madeline Bell, The Transatlantics, Count Basie, Jimmy James, Spanky & Our Gang, Zoot, Junior Parker, Jackie Trent, The Four Preps, PJ Proby, Mae West, Five Man Electrical Band, Dave Baby Cortez, and many others. Capitol/Universal (Japan), 1972. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful early record from the great Steve Miller – a set that calls out its soulful intentions with a cover dedication to Mahalia Jackson and Junior Parker! Miller never copies the work of either artist, but instead really does a great job of channeling the soulful spirit of their generation through the new attitude of the Bay Area scene – often working with backing vocals alongside his lead, with a soul harmony approach that makes a few tunes straight soul swingers – while others have those funky blues currents that Steve always did so well. The great Ben Sidran produced – and gives the album the same criss-crossing of styles that his own early 70s albums showcased so well – and titles include "Fandango", "Love's Riddle", "Heal Your Heart", "Welcome", "Enter Maurice", "Somebody Somewhere Help Me", "The Sun Is Going Down", and "Journey From Eden".
