In the electric universe of the GRP label, Chick Corea makes a bold move with his Akoustic Band here – even if the overall conception of the cover and the group's fashions have kind of an "electric" 80s look to it! The group here is a trio – with JohnPatitucci on bass and Dave Weckl on drums – and Corea's flowing piano lines are at the forefront of the group's work, initiating the tunes with a surprisingly heartfelt feel, and showing some of the sense of space and sound he developed on his electric recordings. Titles include "Spain", "Circles", "TBC", "Morning Sprite", "Bessie's Blues", and "My One & Only Love". CD

Chick Corea —
Alive ... CD GRP, 1991. Used ...
$3.99
A double-length live set from Chick Corea's Akoustic Band – an ensemble with kind of a silly name, but one that marked a nice return to basics for Chick! The trio features JohnPatitucci on bass and Dave Weckl on drums – and both players have a good sense of feeling to match Corea's expressive work here on the acoustic piano. And although live, there's a sense of intimacy to the record that's very nice – not the "superstar" sort of live record you might expect from Chick, but a nicely subdued session overall. Titles include "On Green Dolphin Street", "Humpty Dumpty", "UMMG", "Round Midnight", "Hackensack", "Morning Sprite", and "La Fiesta". CD

Rolf & Joachim Kuhn —
Lifeline ... LP Impulse (Germany), 2012. New Copy 2LP (reissue)...
$29.9959.99
The brilliant return of Rolf and Joachim Kuhn to Impulse Records – and a set that's every bit as their landmark album for the label in the 60s! As with that classic – Impressions Of New York – there's a sound here that's let free right from the start – bold stepping forward by both players, with piano and clarinet interwoven together in lines that are free, yet still have an inherent sort of pulse – guided subtly by the work of JohnPatitucci on bass and Brian Blade on drums! What's truly amazing is that the Kuhns sound as vibrant, urgent, and potent as ever – as if the passage of decades hasn't dimmed them a bit, and that they're still breaking down barriers of jazz with a record like this. Titles include "Girona", "Lion's Speech", "Mosquitas", "A Little Time Machine", "Light Year", and "Researching Has No Limits". LP, Vinyl record album
Pat Martino on guitar, David Kikoski on piano, JohnPatitucci on bass, Scott Allan Robinson on drums, and Daniel Sadownick on percussion. Titles include "Four On Six", "Groove Yard", "Road Song", "If I Should Lose You", and "Full House". CD
Features Bobby Shew and Chuck Findley on trumpet and flugelhorn, Art Resnick on piano, JohnPatitucci on bass, and Sherman Ferguson on drums. Tracks include "Nadalin", "Stompin' At The Savoy", "I Love You", "I'm Old Fashioned", and "Joy Spring". CD
One of the most adventurous records we've heard from Wayne Shorter in years – a collection of live recordings made in Europe in the summer of 2001, featuring a free-thinking group that includes Danilo Perez on piano, JohnPatitucci on bass, and Brian Blade on drums. The sound here is almost end-of-the-60s Shorter – as the tracks have an incredible amount of space, and might at times almost be dubbed "out". Shorter returns to his angular genius on tenor and soprano sax – crafting long, complicated lines that have a lot more edginess than we've heard from him in years! Titles include "Go", "Valse Triste", "Sanctuary", "Masquelero", "Footprints", and "Atlantis". LP, Vinyl record album

Gary Burton —
Departure ... CD Concord, 1997. Used ...
Temporarily Out Of Stock
A laidback quintet date from Gary Burton – one that almost returns us to the warm hues of his best early work in the 60s! The record's awash in Burton's famous tone on the vibes – a very color-sensitive approach to the instrument that resonates nicely amidst a setting that includes piano from Fred Hersch, guitar from John Scofield, bass from JohnPatitucci, and drums from Peter Erskine. The tracks are all taken at a mellow or midtempo pace, and Burton's never too arch-modern in his approach – almost soulfully swinging at times, on tracks that include "Poinciana", "Depk", "Tenderly", "If I Were A Bell", "For All We Know", and "Japanese Waltz". CD
With Christian McBride & JohnPatitucci on bass, Horacio Hernandez & Lewis Nash on drums, Russell Malone on guitar, Danilo Perez, Makoto Ozone & Mulgrew Miller on piano & Luis Quintero on percussion. CD
A follow-up to Shorter's successful Footprints Live album – done in the same sort of angular and introspective mode, and also with a group that includes Danilo Perez on piano, JohnPatitucci on bass, and Brian Blad on drums. The overall style's not as much in the joyous, soulful Shorter mode that we love so much from the earlier years – but the record is a good follow-up to Footprints, and will please if you dig that set. Titles include "Smilin Through", "Joy Ryder", "Tinker Bell", "Over Shadow Hill Way", "Adventures Aboard The Golden Mean", and "Beyond The Sound Barrier". CD

A huge step forward in music for saxophonist Jimmy Greene – an artist who's still reeling from the loss of his daughter, who was murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary in 2012 – but who's turning his grief and sorrow into some of the richest music he's ever recorded! The feel here is even deeper than the first volume dedicated to Green's daughter – original songs that burst out with so much life and energy, we're held rapt right from the very first note – almost never mired in the sort of melancholy you might expect from such an experience, and instead ready to set a new fire to light the way ahead! Greene plays tenor, soprano, alto, and baritone – and other musicians include Kevin Hayes on Rhodes and piano, Mike Moreno on guitar, Renee Rosnes on piano, Ben Williams and JohnPatitucci on bass, and Jeff Tain Watts and Otis Brown III on drums. Titles include "Fun Circuits", "Second Breakfast", "Flowers", "Stanky Leg", "Big Guy", "Amantes", and "Thirty Two". CD
A sublime take on the music of Billie Holiday – served up in the tremendous vocals of Jose James! In the notes, James recalls that the music of Holiday is one of his first memories of childhood – and goes onto explain how much her music has meant to him over the years – a relationship we can clearly hear in the love and care he brings to the music! The setting is one of the most straight jazz that James has ever worked with – and backing is by a hip trio that features Jason Moran on piano and Fender Rhodes, JohnPatitucci on bass, and Eric Harland on drums – all of whom usually lay back with this slow-stepping vibe that's wonderful – and very different than the kind of accompaniment you'd hear on Holiday's original recordings. Yet Jose's raspy vocals really get at the same sort of heartbreaking feel in the lyrics, but from a different masculine perspective – an approach that's simple, subtle, and extremely effective. Titles include "God Bless The Child", "Strange Fruit", "Body & Soul", "Good Morning Heartache", "Lover Man", "Tenderly", and "Fine & Mellow". CD
Featuring Chick Corea on piano, Stu Goldberg on synths, Bill Summers on drum programming and percussion, JohnPatitucci on acoustic bass, Alphonso Johnson and Gary Willis on bass guitar, and Scott Roberts on percussion. LP, Vinyl record album

Don Friedman Trio —
Timeless ... CD 441, 2003. Used ...
Out Of Stock
The sound here is definitely timeless, thanks to some always-strong work on piano from Don Friedman – one of those players who first shone brightly in the early 60s, then dropped off the radar for many years – but has reemerged lately with a new level of brilliance in his work! Friedman's touch on the piano is confident and compelling – still prone to some of the nicely bright and round tones of earlier years, but also imbued with a stronger sense of presence that well suits the rhythm team of JohnPatitucci on bass and Omar Hakim on drums. Titles include "Star Eyes", "Alone Together", "Emily", "Turn Out The Stars", "What Is This Thing Called Love", and "Body & Soul". CD
The Manhattan Jazz Quintet play the music of Blue Note Records – but they also get some fresh tunes of their own from leader David Matthews – whose writing at this point is really at the top of his game! Core Blue Note tunes include Bud Powell's "Cleopatra's Dream", Woody Shaw's "Sweet Love Of Mine", Bobby Timmons' "Moanin", Sonny Clark's "Cool Struttin", and Dexter Gordon's "Cheese Cake" – all handled in arrangements that are way more than just a copycat of the Blue Note originals, and which instead show Matthews' arrangements really opening up the songs into vibrant new territory. In fact, David's own originals may well be the most Blue Note-like titles on the set – the songs "Wolff Pack" and "For Alfred" – played by the group that features Lew Soloff on trumpet, George Young on tenor, JohnPatitucci on bass, and Dave Weckl on drums.
