✨✧ Inner Shade4 Corners ... CD
Rice/Warner (Japan), 1998. Used ... $8.99
An excellent batch of UK soul tracks – and essentially an Incognito album! Bluey from Incognito produced the set, and the album features vocals by Maysa Leak and Christopher Ballin, plus some tasty reed work by Brit jazz funk players Ed Jones and Chris Demargary. Some of the tracks are instrumentals, and the overall feel of the album is very similar to the soulful smooth funk of Incognito. Titles include "Operator", "Loose Cannon", "Inner Space", "Little Sunflower", "Mood To Mood", and "Four Corners". CD
(Japanese digipak pressing – includes obi! Small Japanese promo sticker on back cover and over barcode.)

Marva WhitneyIt's My Thing (expanded edition) ... LP
King/Soul Brother/Passion (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $31.99 36.99
A wonderfully expanded version of this classic of funky funky female soul! Marva Whitney was one of the greatest singers in the James Brown stable of stars during the late 60s – and she sang with a hard raw style worth of The Godfather himself! Brother James produced and wrote a good part of this classic album – and the record is one of the greatest JB albums of all time! Nearly every cut's a winner – like the sample classic "Unwind Yourself", which has a crazy corkscrew sax line, or the massive two-part remake of the Isley's "It's Your Thing" (titled "It's My Thing"), or the slowly funky "Get Out Of My Life", or the massive duet with Bobby Byrd "You Got To Have A Job", or the classic instrumental "In The Middle". This reissue is an expanded version, and it features a very excellent batch of tracks that were previously only issued as funky 45s! Tracks include "Sunny", "I Made A Mistake Because It's Only You (parts 1 & 2)", "You Got To Have A Job", "Shades Of (inst)", "I'm Tired I'm Tired I'm Tired", "This Girl's In Love With You", "He's The One", "Unwind Yourself", "What Kind Of Man", "Things Got To Get Better", "It's My Thing (parts 1 & 2)", and "Get Out Of My Life". 18 cuts in all. Mario Luciano & Lauren SantiShades Of Mauve – Madlib Invazion Library Series Vol 8 ... LP
Madlib Invazion, 2024. New Copy ... $21.99 24.99
A slightly different set than some of the others in this mighty nice series – in that this entry's got a vocalist – singer Lauren Santi, who brings some very soulful, wordless moments to the album! Mario Luciano handles a great range of keyboards, and the tunes have a lean, laidback vibe that's really great – like the mellower moments on the Shaft soundtrack, or those cool cuts from a blacksploitation soundtrack when the hero's either finding love, or back home licking his wounds after a fight! Titles include "Cosmic Portals", "The Yellow Field", "Donte's French", "Excursion", "Solar Journey", "Blue Miles", "When It's Real", and "Inner Search". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousMany Shades Of House – Selected By Lea Lisa ... LP
Favorite (France), 1990s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A set that really lives up to the promise of the title – as there's many shades of house music here, presented in a great array of overlooked cuts from back in the day! Most of this work is from the second generation of house music – that moment when New York and other scenes were taking the initial experiments of Chicago and working the grooves in all sorts of great directions – sometimes lean and spacey, sometimes with a deeper current of soul! Titles include the great "Can't Change Me (Ron Trent rmx)" by Ndambi, plus "Emotional" by Truth, "Be There (Kerri's club mix)" by Kerri Chandler, "Untitled" by Slowhouse 2, "Inner Dance" by Passion Dance Orchestra, "Blax Thanx" by Abacus, "Higher (club mix)" by Transient with Sherman Benton, and "Ekeyz" by Pure Science. ✨✧ Paul DesmondSkylark ... LP
CTI, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A stunning 70s set from the great Paul Desmond – one that has the tremendous alto player finding an even fresher groove than before – yet all without losing any of the class and control that made him so great in the 50s and 60s! Don Sebesky arranged the set, but most of the instrumentation is nice and lean – small group modes that allow Paul's alto to soar out in the lead, often alongside some excellent guitar work from Gabor Szabo and Gene Bertoncini – the latter of whom provides accompaniment that takes us back to some of Jim Hall's music with Desmond. Bob James plays a bit of piano on the record, and rhythm is by Ron Carter on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Ralph MacDonald on percussion – plus a bit of cello from George Ricci, who shades tunes in with a mighty nice sound. But as you'd guess, the main focus is on Desmond's sublime alto sax – on titles that include "Was A Sunny Day", "Take Ten", "Music For A While", and of course, "Skylark". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow label stereo pressing with Van Gelder stamp. Includes the CTI inner sleeve. Cover has some surface and edge wear, worn corners, staple holes at the top right, and a small Motown sticker in back.)

✨✧ Al B SurePrivate Times & The Whole 9 ... LP
Warner, 1990. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the records that first put Al on the map – a smooth soul set that really revised male soul standards from the 80s by shedding some of the coldness of the quiet storm generation, and going for a bit of the deeper vibe from years before! Instrumentation and production still have a bit of a late 80s feel, but Al's way of inflecting his vocals really bring a lot to the tunes – and create a sense of warmth that's really great. Titles include "Sure Thang", "Shades Of Grey", "Touch You", "So Special", "I Want To Know", "No Matter What You Do", "Channel J", and "Had Enuf". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Al JarreauBreakin' Away ... LP
Warner, 1981. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Sublime sounds from Al Jarreau – exactly the kind of record that made him a unique superstar at the time of its release, and which still continues to fly Al's flag strongly all these many years later! Jarreau's got that perfect blend between jazz roots and soulful expression here – set up in backings that are a few shades hipper than AOR, and just as perfectly polished – the kind of superb setting that could take a singer like Al and really make him into something new – opening up his sound to a huge audience who might never have tapped into the singer otherwise. Titles include the killer classic "We're In This Love Together" – a cut that's almost a genre unto itself – plus "Closer To Your Love", "My Old Friend", "Roof Garden", "Blue Rondo A La Turk", "Teach Me Tonight", and "My Old Friend". ✨✧ Jimmy WebbEl Mirage ... LP
Atlantic, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The songwriting of Jimmy Webb meets the studio genius of producer/arranger George Martin – for this one-off Atlantic album from 1977, a strange little set that almost has Jimmy sounding far older than his young years at the time! Martin's working in a style that follows nicely from Webb's earlier Land's End album – using full backings to color in the tunes with just the right shades and sounds to flesh them past Jimmy's vocals. But the unusual thing is the raspy, almost faltering quality of Jimmy's vocals – sung in a style that moves into his own words tentatively, as if he's rediscovering the lyrics after many years, or making them up on the spot. The mix of Webb's roughness and Martin's warmth makes the album more compelling than it might be otherwise – and titles include a version of Jimmy's classic "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress", plus "The Highwayman", "Christiaan No", "Moment In A Shadow", "Sugarbird", "Where The Universes Are", and "Mixed-Up Guy". LP, Vinyl record album
