✨✧ Hugh MasekelaReconstruction ... LP
Chisa, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Hugh Masekela kicks off the 70s with this wonderfully bold statement – a record that's light years from the shorter, simpler instrumentals of his earliest American years – and which really shows Hugh trying to reach out for a new groove! Masekela sings a bit on the set – often with this raspy tone that echoes his slight grimace on the cover – and instrumentation includes lots of work from other LA electric jazz giants, including members of The Crusaders – with Joe Sample on Fender Rhodes, Monk Montgomery and Wilton Felder on bass, Arthur Adams on guitar, and Larry Willis on piano. Some of the best tracks have earthy percussion at the bottom – congas by Francisco Aguabella – which complicates the rhythms in a great way – and titles include "Woza", "I Can't Dance", "Make Me A Potion", "Sala Le Mane", "Traces", and "Leave Us Alone". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Hugh MasekelaRiot/Mace & Grenades ... 7-inch
Uni, 1969. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The tenor of the times is in the title of this one – as "Riot" is a darker number than some of Hugh's other hits, but no less funky, with a brace of trumpets blaring over the top, and chunky beats that have that great scatter shot sound of his Uni work! "Mace" is a brilliant tune too – slowly exploding, with a bit of vocals, and heavenly trumpet that really makes the cut sparkle! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Still in a Uni sleeve.)

Uni, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A stone winner – on both sides! You already know Hugh's classic "Grazing In The Grass", one of the all-time great Afro Pop numbers – with trademark loud cowbell and wonderful off-beat horn sounds. "Bajabula" is pretty darn great, too – and although it's very very slow, it's got a similar haunting groove, with off-kilter rhythms that make it really compelling. 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Label has some writing in pen.)

✨✧ Hugh MasekelaHugh Masekela Is Alive & Well At The Whisky ... LP
Uni, 1967. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of Hugh's most compelling records from the time – cut live at the Whiskey A Go Go, with a jazzy edge that really shows him growing a lot as a musician. The set features small combo backing by a group that features Al Abreu on sax, Hotep Cecil Barnard on piano, Henry Franklin on bass, and Chuck Carter on drums – and in addition to trumpet, Hugh also does sing a little, does a bit of scatting, and talks between some of the songs, in a tone that exposes a political side that you don't hear on his studio sets. Titles include "Son Of Ice Bag", "Senor Coraza", "Ha Lese Le Di Khanna", "Little Miss Sweetness", "Mra", and a groovy reading of "Up Up & Away". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear and a bit of pen in back.)

✨✧ Hugh MasekelaPromise Of A Future ... LP
Uni, Late 60s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Classic work from Hugh Masekela – and the album that pushed him over the top! The record features his version of "Grazin In The Grass", a runaway instrumental hit when it was issued – and a sly little groover that was based upon some earlier South African pop melodies that Hugh copped from his roots. The group's a tight little quintet with Al Abreu on tenor and soprano sax, William Henderson on piano, Chuck Carter on drums, and Henry Franklin on bass. The whole thing's great – and tracks include "Stop", "Bajabula Bonke", "There Are Seeds To Sow", "Vuca", "Almost Seedless", and "No Face, No Name, and No Number". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. Cover is nice.)

✨✧ Hugh MasekelaBoy's Doin' It ... LP
Casablanca, 1975. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A mid 70s effort from Hugh Maskela, recorded in Nigeria, an excellent melding of his jazz inflected pop sound with some deeper soulful grooves. The vibe here is showing both some funk and disco influences, but with trademark South African style melodies floating over top and a dedication to Fela, you know there's some afro beat creeping in too. 6 tracks in all: "The Boys Doin' It", "Mama", "Excuse Me Please", "Ashiko", "In The Jungle" and "A Person Is A Sometime Thing". ✨✧ Hugh MasekelaIntroducing Hedzoleh Soundz ... LP
Blue Thumb, 1975. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Like Hugh Masekela's other records on Blue Thumb, this is a totally great bit of Afro funk, with a good hard groove filled with tight jazz playing, and some nice choppy rhythm that feels like it belongs on a Fela record. Great stuff played by his tight little Hedzoleh Soundz group, with the cuts "Kaa Ye Oya", "Patience", "When", "Adade", and "Languta". LP, Vinyl record album

MGM, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of Hugh's best albums for MGM – with some tracks that are longer than his late 60s pop tunes, and which feature him stretching out more in a soulful mode, hitting some fuzzy Afro funk grooves that are very nice! Hugh's soulful trumpet is in fine fine form, and the titles include "Child Of The Earth", "Where Are You Going?", "Morolo", "Con Mucho Carino", and "Unohilo". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Hugh MasekelaLive At The BBC ... CD
Fuel 2000/Varese, 1985/1988. Used ... Out Of Stock
Mid 80s recordings from Hugh Masekela – one set recorded live at the Glastonbury Festival in 1985, the other recorded at a Nelson Mandela concert in 1988. Hugh's style here is greatly expanded from his work of the late 60s – more vocal-oriented, still with African roots, but also stretching out in kind of a pan-global pop sound. The overall feel isn't bad, although the work as a whole lacks the edge of Masekela at his better moments. Titles include "Tonight", "Politician", "Serhasa", "Zulu Wedding", "Stimela", "Amampondo", and "Soweto Blues". CD

✨✧ Hugh MasekelaLive At The Record Plant – February 24, 1974 ... LP
Honey Pie, 1974. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Hugh Masekela at a really fantastic point in his career – recorded live for a radio broadcast, and working with a freewheeling style that's quite different than both his early and later work! The vibe here is right up there with some of the few longer-form jazz recordings made by Hugh in the early 70s – mixing his trumpet with lots of percussion and guitar, in a style that's nice and loose throughout – sometimes funky, sometimes earthy – and very much in the farthest reaches of his Chisa period sound! Many of these tracks show even deeper African roots than some of Masekela's original South African recordings – and the set includes the tracks "Languta", "Stimela Coal Train", "Love Song For A Jungle Afternoon", "Nye Tamo Am", and a number of untitled tracks. One of the funkier albums by African trumpeter Hugh Masekela, and a record that's filled with lots of short little groovers that have more of an edge than on previous pop instrumental albums – much more of the hard funky vibe of the Chisa years! The set features loads of great funky 45 cuts – including "Fuzz", "Riot", "Mace & Grenades", "Gold", and "Head Peepin". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Hugh MasekelaYou Told Your Mama Not To Worry ... LP
Casablanca, 1977. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Pure 70s genius from Hugh Masekela – a record that's quite different than his earlier Afro-soul styled albums, but somehow even better! The format here is much more straightly soulful – with larger arrangements and a strong vocal groove on a number of tracks – but Masekela's trumpet is still blasting firmly over the top of the tunes, infusing them with a soaring sense of soul that's really great! Rhythms change up nicely from the early days – getting complicated at times, and matching the seriousness of the message on the best tracks – and titles include "Black Beauty", "Makonko", "You Told Your Mama Not To Worry", "Hangover", "Soweto Blues", and "The Mandingo Man". Chisa, 1971. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Quite an interesting record from Hugh Masekela – one that mixes his South African soul approach with some grooves that also have a bit more of a New Orleans funk feel. Overall, the style is similar to Les' work from the time – but with touches that make the whole thing a bit hipper than usual, thanks to work by Jonas Gwangwa, who sings and plays trombone, and Caiphus Semenya, who plays alto and also sings a bit. Titles include "Ade", "Caution", "Hush", and "Goin Back To New Orleans". LP, Vinyl record album

Friends Of DistinctionGrazin' (Discrete 4 Channel Stereo CD-4) ... LP

The debut album from Friends Of Distinction – a very groovy LA harmony vocal group who really transcended the worlds of pop and soul! The quartet were originally part of the earlier Rex Middletone's Hi Fi group – which split into both Friends Of Distinction, and 5th Dimension – and like that other, slightly more famous group, FoD have a soaring approach that really reflects their years in music, tuned towards a groovier late 60s style! The record sports their hit vocal version of Hugh Masekela's "Grazing In The Grass", with the great "I can dig it" line, plus an excellent reading of a lost cut by funky drummer Roy Porter, entitled "Lonesome Mood" – next to other great titles that include "Sweet Young Thing Like You", "Peaceful", "Baby I Could Be So Good At Loving You", "Eli's Coming", and "Going In Circles". A damn soulful album from Ghanaian percussionist Rim Kwaku Obeng – recorded in LA at the end of the 70s, with loads of sweet clubby touches in the mix! Rim gets in plenty of tight percussion – lots of which showcases his rim-heavy approach to the drums – and also plays keyboards and sings a bit too – in a larger group that mixes in some very hip LA funky elements, a bit like some of the criss-crossing that Hugh Masekela did on his Chisa Records sessions! The style makes for a great bit of funky club with lots of deeper acoustic percussion elements in the sound – and titles include the massive break classic "Funky Drummer", plus "Nothing Is Free", "Spend Your Money", "Gas Line", "Sunkwa", and "Believe In Yourself". Kapp, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great album – even if Miriam's not in as many voices as promised by the title! (Who do they think she is – Rich Little?) The recording quality appears to be live – as the tracks have an open jamming style, with Miriam singing in that rich, folksy style of her early years, while a small combo backs her up on guitar, bass, and percussion, plus some trumpet by Hugh Masekela. Titles include "Nagula", "Can't Cross Over", "Night Must Fall", "Liwa Wechi", "Kilimanjaro", and "Ngola Kurila". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Friends Of DistinctionGrazin/Real Friends/Highly Distinct/Whatever (SACD Multi-Channel) ... CD
RCA/Vocalion (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Four albums from this wonderful group – all presented here with great sonic quality too! First up is Grazin – the debut album from Friends Of Distinction – a very groovy LA harmony vocal group who really transcended the worlds of pop and soul! The quartet were originally part of the earlier Rex Middleton's Hi Fi group – which split into both Friends Of Distinction, and 5th Dimension – and like that other, slightly more famous group, FoD have a soaring approach that really reflects their years in music, tuned towards a groovier late 60s style! Real Friends is a stone early winner from The Friends Of Distinction – featuring a great set of pop soul tunes that really let the group shine in the harmony department! Vocal arrangements are by Jerry Peters – who really pushes the structure of the vocals, taking the singing to a level only hinted at on the group's previous album, combining 60s pop harmony with uptown soul production, given a bit of a smooth 70s touch. Titles include the hit "Love Or Let Me Be Lonely", plus "Any Way You Want Me", "Crazy Mary", "Long Time Comin My Way", "Just a Little Lovin", "It Don't Matter to Me", and "My Mind Is A Camera". Next is Highly Distinct – beautiful baroque soul from LA! The Friends of Distinction were always best known for their big hit version of "Grazing In the Grass" (not on this LP), but they were a pretty progressive soul group, and they spent a lot of time in the studio coming up with cool new ways to present their vocal style. This album includes a very cool "psyche" cut-up track called "Impressions", and it's two minutes worth of tape experiments that might have been lifted from The White Album. The cut then runs right into a great batch of groovy pop soul tracks, like "It's Just A Game Love", "Workin On A Groovy Thing", "It's Sunday", and "Let Yourself Go". Whatever is filled with some nice little groovers from the enigmatic Friends Of Distinction – and a record recorded right after their big "Grazin In The Grass" fame. The album features lots of cool arrangements from Jerry Peters – whose handling of the group pushed them past a simple pop-soul vocal combo into the realm of the more far-reaching soul acts of their time. Most tracks have vocal solos on the main parts – mostly by Barbara Love or Floyd Butler – and tracks include "You and I", "People Talkin & Sayin Nothin", "Bring Us A Better Day", "Great Day", and "Check It Out". ✨✧ Duke LumumbaJungle Funk ... LP
Capitol, 1969. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Do yourself a favor, and splurge on this album – you won't be disappointed! The record is a gem all the way through – a really unique mixture of LA soul jazz and African rhythms, with a sound that's almost like Hugh Masekela sitting in with the Jazz Crusaders! Of course, there's a lot of Jazz Crusaders in the set – as Wilton Felder plays electric bass on the album, giving it a fantastic loping groove – but there's also plenty of unique albums on the record, especially its way of approaching the rhythms with a sly, syncopated groove that's immediately infectious! Duke's trumpet solos are great, and they're augmented by tenor work by Chester Washington and trombone by George Bohannon – all nicely grooving on the album's brilliant blend of jazzy tracks. Titles include "Jungle Funk", "Afrikaloo", "Akagruge", "Like It Is", "Mafam", and "Peace Brother". Somebody put this one on CD – and do us all a treat! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Miriam MakebaIn Concert/Pata Pata/Makeba! ... CD
Collectables, 1967/1968. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A 2CD set that features 3 of Miriam Makeba's late 60s albums for Reprise! In Concert is pretty great set – a bit folksier than most of Makeba's other work for Reprise, but recorded with a pretty lively groove on many numbers, a lot more interesting than some of Makeba's early work in the folk vein. The record includes a 7 minute version of "A Piece Of Ground", a nice take on "Mas Que Nada", and the cuts "Ibabalazie", "Click Song", "Jolinkomo", and "Reza". Pata Pata was the album that really put Makeba on the map – as her hit version of the song "Pata Pata" forever guaranteed that African-tinged grooves would have a place in the pop charts! The track's included as the lead off song on this classic album of "uptown African soul" (if we might use such a term), and other goodies include "Click Song Number 1", "A Piece Of Ground", "West Wind", "Ha Po Zamani", and "Jol'inkomo". Makeba has Miriam really hipping up her style a lot, taking the earlier folksy sound and infusing it with a bit more of the Hugh Masekela-driven African soul styles of the late 60s. Jerry Ragovoy produced the record, and he and Miriam handled all the arrangements. Tracks are a mix of mellower numbers with more jaunty tracks in the style of Miriam's hit "Pata Pata" (which isn't on this album.) Titles include "U Mngoma", "Iphi Ndilela", "Sibongile", "Hamba Naye", and "Umoya". CD

✨✧ Blue MitchellBantu Village ... LP
Blue Note, 1969. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the funkiest albums ever on Blue Note – a set that mixes the trumpet talents of Blue Mitchell with some killer backings from Monk Higgins – all in a groove that more gritty edges than the best funky soundtracks of the time! Higgins keeps the backings full, but always quite lean – fusing all elements together into a sharp, tight rhythm that steps along with some of the slight African touches you might guess from the title – a groove that's not really that authentic, but which resonates with some of the best inspirations that Hugh Masekela was bringing to American music at the time. And while the album might be an attempt to cash in on Masekela's groove, the feel here is really quite different overall – as tracks are nicely stretched out, with plenty of room for jazzy solo work – and a groove that's much harder overall, thanks to Higgins! Other players include Freddy Robinson on guitar, Wilton Felder on bass, Paul Humphrey on drums, and Plas Johnson on tenor – and titles include "HNIC", "Flat Backing", "Na Ta Ka", "Bantu Village", and "Blue Dashiki". Sweet funky Crusaders – one of the first records the group made after dropping the "Jazz" from their name, and a soulful electric set through and through! The group still have that tightly-crafted soul jazz sound that made their late 60s recordings so great – but they're also stretching out here in more of a 70s electric funk mode – letting the keyboards of Joe Sample really set the tone for most of the numbers, as Wilton Felder's basslines weave with the drums of Stix Hooper to create a set of really great tracks. The double-length album is overflowing with great numbers – and in addition to the contributions of the core quartet, the album also features guitar from Larry Carlton, David T Walker, and Arthur Adams – plus a bit of extra bass from Chuck Rainey! Fab pop harmony soul! The Friends Of Distinction were LA counterparts of the 5th Dimension – and at one time, members of both groups had worked under the name of Rex Middleton's Hi Fi's. Unlike the 5th Dimension, who were a bit more pop, the Friends Of Distinction stayed more in the soul vein – using the sweet harmony style they'd crafted earlier to work through some jazzy changes that brought a whole new sound to the male/female soul group mode. This 11 track greatest hits collection features some of their best gems from the RCA years – including the super-huge vocal version of Hugh Masekela's "Grazing In The Grass" and other great ones like "I Really Hope You Do", "Crazy Mary", "Going In Circles", "Love Or Let Me Be Lonely", "Time Waits For No One", "It Don't Matter To Me" and "Great Day".
