Amazing music by one of our favorite saxophone players of all time – captured here at the height of his 60s genius on the European scene! The tracks here have never been issued at all – but stand as a perfect complement to the killer MPS/Saba albums by Nathan Davis – and are served up with a similar blend of soulful hardbop and modernist edges – qualities that are already present in the fantastic phrasing of Davis on tenor and flute, pushed even further by the equally great work of French piano legend Georges Arvanitas! Although Arvanitas could be out when he wanted, he could also swing like the best of them – and his pairing with Davis here is perfect, and really brings out both the soul and edge in both players – especially in the company of George's fantastic rhythm duo of Charles Saudrais on drums and Jacky Samson on bass. The set's full of other surprises, too – including a bit of organ from Arvanitas, and an appearance by Jack Dieval – and the whole thing is beautifully recorded by French Radio. Some of the rarest work ever by Sonny Criss – and a key link between his LA bop sides of the mid 50s, and his Prestige comeback sides of the late 60s! The CD features tracks from a rare album that Criss cut in Paris during the early 60s, while he was living in the city and working with the cream of its jazz players. This all-star set has Criss blowing some wonderfully soulful alto in a combo that includes Georges Arvanitas on organ and piano, Rene Thomas on guitar, Pierre Michelot on bass, and Philippe Combelle on drums. The original album is one of the rarest sides we've ever found ourselves looking for over the years – and it's wonderful to have the material back out again with such great fidelity! It's wonderful to hear Criss blowing with an organ/guitar group – but even the piano tracks are pretty darn great. Saravah was born from the fame of Francis Lai's soundtrack for A Man & A Woman (Un Homme Et Une Femme), and from the lyrical contributions of Pierre Barouh – but immediately after, the company began pursuing a musical path like no other – taking on strands of jazz, world music, and the hippest styles in France – and creating new music that was unlike anything that had ever been recorded! 2nd cool volume of this great series of funky sound library tracks put together by the Spinning Wheel record store in Germany! Like the first volume, this one's got a killer set of grooves that you'll never find in the original, and which are laid down by some of the funkiest cats working in Europe during the 70's. There's stuff on here by Nino Nardini (and not cuts from the Desco reissue), Klaus Weiss, Jean Jacques Perry, Guy Boyer, and Georges Arvanitas – and the set's even more well-selected and well-congealed than the first one. We're simply astounded at the amount of good tracks coming out of the vaults of Europe, but all we can say is keep the good stuff coming! LP, Vinyl record album

Stunning early work from trumpeter Ted Curson – a record that's got as much soul and rock-solid power as you'd guess from the image on the cover! Ted's working here in the company of his frequent partner from the early days – tenorist Bill Barron – and together, they come up with a riveting sound that rivals the genius of early 60s work from Charles Mingus or Booker Ervin – with a similar blend of sharp edges, tight rhythms, and in the pocket soul! The rest of the group features Georges Arvanitas on piano – making a rare American appearance – plus Herb Bushler on bass and Dick Berk on drums. Titles include the classic "Straight Ice", plus "Reava's Waltz", "Elephant Walk", and "Nublu". CD

A fantastic album by this enigmatic French singer – one of her first truly experimental albums! The record differs from some of her other albums quite a bit – and has a very strange mix of styles that go from straight ahead (only a track or two), to wildly experimental – very much in the best genre-breaking mode that was going on with the Saravah Records scene in the post-1968 years. Although longtime partner Areski did contribute to this album, the record also features work by Saravah labelmate Jacques Higelin, plus French jazz players like Georges Arvanitas and Philippe Mate – all of whom really help bring some fresh flavors to the record! Great stuff all 'round, and titles include "Brigitte", "Moi Aussi", "Eros", "Marcelle", "Premier Juillet", and "Le Dragon". LP, Vinyl record album

Excellent work from Chris Woods – a genius reed player on alto sax and flute! Chris had a similar history to Nathan Davis, another richly talented American reed player from the same era – in that he was an American, but moved to Europe and achieved greater fame by becoming a seminal part of the scene during the early 60s. Woods recorded albums with Ted Curson, Marco Di Marco, and Georges Arvanitas – whose trio with Jacky Samson and Charles Saudrais is backing Chris up on this album. A few of the tunes are in a more standard jazz mode than Woods' other recordings, but there's also some great ones – like "My Lady", which is a soulful dancing waltz, and "Monsieur Lesbois In Paris", which has a nice stepping groove that's right up there with Woods' most soulful recordings!
